historic flooding across the midwest, causing massive property damage. and some evacuations. >> in the meantime, the countdown is on to the first presidential debate, just three days away now, both candidates giving some hints over the weekend on what voters can expect. >> aaa predicting record travel, ahead of the 4th of july holiday. a lot of people expected to get an early start on their trip, happening later this week. >> 4th of july is next week already, got our eye on all of it. let's start with this dangerous heat wave. al's got the forecast in a moment. erin mclaughlin is in a steamy nyc this morning, erin, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah, over the weekend, here in new york, it was absolutely scorching, forecasted to be a bit better in the city today, but across the country, still looking at extreme weather. >> for millions from coast-to-coast, the summer is off to a ferocious start. >> it's been hot this whole week.

>> reporter: a relentless heat wave smashing records in the northeast. in philadelphia, sunday's high of 98 degrees beat the daily record set over 135 years ago, while washington, d.c. hit 100 degrees in june for the first time in over a decade. other communities facing severe flooding, including rock valley, iowa, where recovery efforts are ongoing after the town was submerged in flood waters when a levee broke, forcing some residents to evacuate. >> the river rose to historic levels, monumental undertaking. >> reporter: iowa's governor declaring a disaster for 21 counties. in tucson, the fire department said a woman died in an intense monsoon rainstorm. another person died in flooding in south dakota, where four rivers broke record levels. new york bracing for intense storms after a scorching hot weekend, lifeguards at new york's jones beach sweating it out. >> i mean, this just keeps getting worse, every summer it feels like the temperature goes up.

>> uh-huh. >> reporter: are you worried about that? >> when i first started working here it was cooler. it got hot late july. this year it started getting hot really early. >> reporter: scientists say there's a clear link between intense heat and human-caused climate change meaning this extreme weather is unlikely to go anywhere anytime soon. savannah? >> erin mclaughlin, leading us off, thank you. >> a lot of people looking for a break from this heat. let's check in with mr. roker. hey, al. >> some will see that break but others will be stuck in it. good morning, everybody. 48 million people from california up to the plains and out to california, under heat advisories, watches and warnings, and this area in red from omaha to wichita, oklahoma city, shreveport, jackson, back to tallahassee in the southeast, this is the area where we have a major risk for heat-related health impacts, heat exposure, heat exhaustion, heatstroke. look at the heat indexes, wichita, you're going to feel like 104 degrees today. 107 in new orleans, 97 in raleigh.

new york city getting cooler, it's only going to feel like 81 degrees, and that's great, but that excessive heat continues tomorrow, omaha, in triple digits, same in oklahoma city, memphis, baton rouge, tallahassee, washington, d.c., you start to cool down a little bit. in fact, take a look at the humidity levels. today, not so bad, low to moderate in the northeast into the appalachians. but, down through the gulf it still stays high all the way up to minneapolis, and tomorrow, things get a little bit better as we make our way from the plains all the way through chicago. but look at the heat and humidity continue down to the south. so we're not going to get a bit of a break. in fact, you're going to be sweating, these are the air temperatures over the next few days into friday, dallas triple digits, mid-90s atlanta, low 90s in tampa and the feels-like temperatures will be well into the triple digits, dallas, jackson, new orleans, and houston, on up into raleigh. guys? >> al, we'll be back with you in a minute. meanwhile, a very big week

in the 2024 race, the first high-stakes debate between president biden and former president trump is just three days away now. president biden spent his weekend prepping at camp david, trump hit the campaign trail, nbc's senior white house correspondent kelly o'donnell joins us with the latest on the preps. kelly, good morning. >> good morning, savannah. this faceoff coming in the peak heat of summer, far earlier in the presidential calendar than we've seen for generations of past debates. preparing themselves differently, president biden is working with his closest aids, and formal rehearsals while mr. trump said his campaign appearances, courting evangelicals and base voters, are getting him ready. debate week is here. >> will anybody be watching the debate on thursday night? >> reporter: president biden, in extended prep sessions at camp david. >> mr. president, how is debate prep going? >> reporter: this much anticipated presidential showdown could be a pivotal event that shakes up a consistently tight race.

the biden campaign out with a new memo predicting two distinct visions for the future on stage in atlanta. announcing 300 debate night watch parties, and 1,600 volunteer events across battleground states. defining the choice, and their >> donald trump is a convicted felon. and the american people have to sit in that for a second. the person who wants to be president has to go sit with his probation officer before he actually goes to the debate, and so it is just a fact. >> reporter: former president trump teasing that he has already made the big choice on a running mate. >> have you decided on a vice president? >> in my mind, yes. >> do they know? >> no, nobody knows. >> reporter: north dakota governor doug burgum is on the vp short list. >> he's got a lot of great choices and i think everybody, the whole country knows my background, both success in business and success in the executive branch as governing. >> reporter: today is the second anniversary of the dobbs

decision that ended a national right to abortion. the first lady campaigned sunday arguing that reproductive rights will be decisive. >> women put joe biden in the white house, and women are going to keep him there. >> reporter: and new this morning, president biden is out with a new ad, and statement, saying that donald trump is solely responsible for the overturning of roe, with his campaign saying that is a potent issue for independent and women voters, while this weekend mr. trump took credit for moving abortion rights back to the states as he urged christians to vote in greater numbers. savannah? >> kelly, thank you. we should men nbc news will have special coverage, and analysis of the first presidential debate coming up on thursday night. >> let's turn now to the middle east, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is once again claiming the u.s. is withholding military aid from israel, something the white house has denied. he's also suggesting that the war could soon enter a new

phase. nbc's matt bradley is in tel aviv for us, matt, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. we just heard from israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu last night saying he's willing to make a partial deal to free those remaining hostages in the gaza strip, but he's still sticking to his position that hamas must be destroyed before the war ends. israel's prime minister doubling down on his criticism of the u.s. as the sparring match between washington and jerusalem enters its second week. there was a dramatic drop in the supply of armaments arriving from the u.s. to israel, benjamin netanyahu said, american officials have spent the past week denying that the u.s. has slowed weapons deliveries to israel. >> we generally do not know what he's talking about. >> reporter: but even as netanyahu continued attacking his american allies -- he said the fight against israel's enemies in gaza would start to slow. the intensive phase of the war against hamas is about to end, he said, netanyahu said that

will allow his army to concentrate on the northern border where israel's fight against hezbollah and iran-backed militia group is heating up. last week hezbollah's leader released ominous surveillance footage of major cities and military installations, boasting about the reach of his drones. we went to an israeli city on lebanon's border. it's been a ghost town since the fighting began last october. in the nearly nine months since this community has been evacuated, feelings have gone from fear to anger to calls for war. right in through here? this city voted overwhelmingly for netanyahu. now, they're furious with him. do you feel as though the government has abandoned the north? unfortunately, yes, every day that passes in the situation stays the same, he told me, they do nothing to bring us back to our homes. american diplomats worry that a major israeli offensive against hezbollah could spark a region-wide war, but many in this displaced community see more war as the only path to

peace. and, hoda, this violence in the middle east may once again be finding its way to american streets. there were violent protests and clashes between pro-palestinian protesters and pro-israeli protesters in front of a synagogue in los angeles yesterday. hoda? >> matt bradley, thank you so much. turning now to alarming incidents on beaches here in the u.s. a well-known surfer and lifeguard was killed in a weekend shark attack in hawaii, and in the meantime, beach goers looking to stay cool on the east coast are being warned to be on high alert for dangerous rip currents, a number of drownings in recent days, including here in new york, where the search of two missing teenagers has now been suspended. stephanie gosk joins us with more on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. for so many people the summer is a time to enjoy the ocean, but it also can be a tragic reminder of how dangerous the water is. this morning, we've been watching a couple of rip currents off the beach here pulling the water out.

two teenage boys went missing, on friday. the coast guard called off the search over the weekend, this as we've been getting terrible news out of hawaii about a beloved surfer there who was killed by a shark in oahu. this morning, shock and sadness in hawaii over the death of a well-known pro surfer and longtime lifeguard, 49-year-old tamayo perry who officials say was killed sunday in a shark attack, while he was surfing off the north shore of oahu. >> it was one of our own city and county life guards. tamayo perry was a lifeguard loby all. >> reporter: perry was a champion surfer who also dabbled as a professional actor. >> get to work. >> reporter: appearing as an extra on the show hawaii 5-0 and the film pirates of the caribbean. the shark attack comes days after two teens vanished while swimming at this busy new york beach. >> the wave was extremely high and it wen topthem a swept them over. >> reporter: officials say it happened minutes after life

guards went off duty. >> we think it might be a rip tide, but that's still under investigation. >> reporter: one of the missing teens identified by his family as 16-year-old elijah chandler, his mother stayed at the beach saturday before authorities called off the search. >> i wish he could come out the water. >> reporter: it comes in two similar incidents in florida, in popular panama city beach officials say three friends from alabama drowned friday after getting caught in a rip current. a woman watched her boyfriend and his two friends get swept away. >> he's just a loving and kind person, i'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact i can't call him. >> reporter: a day earlier in stuart beach another deadly rip current took the lives of this man, brian warner, and his girlfriend, erica. rip currents are narrow strips of water moving away from shore that can form when wind blows towards the beach, moving at speeds at more than 5 miles an hour they can become impossible

to outswim. we often get these reminders every summer for people who go into the water, it is almost impossible to outswim a rip current, if you get pulled out in one do not fight it, swim parallel to the beach until you're no longer being pulled out to shore and then come in. savannah? >> stephanie, thank you. 7:15. we've got a lot more to get to. talking olympic trials, let's go. >> good morning to you. folks, take a look on the plaza right now, the paris olympics now just 32 short days away, and excitement is building, team usa starting to take shape, the weekend was packed with trials across a number of sports with a number of familiar faces to earn your tickets to paris, and nbc's tom llamas has made his way to eugene, oregon because the u.s. track and field trials are under way. tom, good morning. >> reporter: hey, craig, welcome to track town usa, as you mentioned, the u.s. track and field trials are now under way, and we were right there at the

finish line when two of the biggest in the sport, sha'carri richardson, and noah lyles crossed that finish line, punching their ticket to paris. but i've got to tell you about this 16-year-old who just qualified for the 400 meter men's finals, a name quickly everyone is getting to know. noah lyles, who won bronze in tokyo, sprinting his way to the games in paris in the 100 meters, celebrating with his mom, right after qualifying. >> oh, oh. >> still a lot more speed to be given for the rest of the year, but this is a great place to start it out. >> reporter: on saturday -- watch lane 6, sprinter sha'carri richardson, not her best start but look what happens next. >> sha'carri richardson! >> reporter: now becoming the fastest woman on team usa and heading to paris, ready to show the world what she couldn't in tokyo. sha'carri qualified but wasn't allowed to compete after testing

events. and men, caleb dressel, heading to paris slapping the water after winning the 100 meter butterfly in 50.19 seconds, his fastest since 2022. all right, guys, back out here at the track, this is a ten-day event so there's a lot of track and field left, including tonight when we're going to see dylan beard race, you may remember him, craig introduced us to him, the full-time walmart deli employee who qualified to come here to the trials, running tonight his first race in the 110 meter hurdles, we'll be rooting for him. and i do have to tell you about this other phenom right now, quincy wilson, the guy everyone is talking about. we saw him qualify last night for the 400 meter men's finals. i stress men. he is 16 years old. he is racing and beating people that are nearly twice his age. he is lightning fast. again, this is so hard to believe, 16 years old, but everyone here is talking about him. craig, i don't remember what i was doing when i was 16, but it was definitely not competing for the olympics.

back out in force today, calling for oakland mayor sheng thao to resign. it follows a search of her home last week by federal agents. now, opponents gathered last night at city hall demanding she address what happened. they're also angry about recent violence. right now, authorities are not saying why the mayor's house was searched. the mayor has only spoken through her attorney, who says she is not in hiding. i'm bob redell will be another hot day today for potential wildfires. as firefighters in sonoma county wrap up their work on the point fire, which fortunately is now 90% contained. take a look at this map on your screen. you can see there are three locations in the berkeley area grizzly peak, tilden regional park, and kensington, where firefighters from the berkeley fire department and other agencies will be doing their annual wildfire training exercises today, tomorrow and friday, starting at 830 in the morning. the give you a heads up to. just don't be alarmed. don't call 911. thanks bob. and that hot

jennifer and pat garner were nice enough to come to studio 1a this morning. the world has fallen in love with their culinary chemistry. we certainly have. the pretend cooking show on jen's social media, and this morning they have brought their sweetness and skills to all of us here. they will share a family favorite dessert recipe. it is great to have you both here. jen, why don't we start with this, barbara's blackberry cobbler. who is barbara? >> barbara was my best friend growing up. her mom, barbara lance, mrs. l, i called her, she could do everything. she had quilts hanging in the cultural center in west virginia. she was the best flower arranger, right, mom? >> yes, she was. >> she was the very best -- there's a picture of her, yes. and she was the very best cook. so this is a recipe that she gave my mom. mom, you use it -- how often did you make it this last week? >> i made it three times. >> wow! >> because i take it to every pot luck because it's easy and everyone loves it. >> it's a home run. >> but now they're going to see the recipe. and what else can i take to pot
