working to make trump's case for president, while also trying to prove they should be his top pick in washington. brie jackson, nbc news now to breaking news. the espionage trial of american journalist evan gershkovich is underway this morning in russia, the 32 year old wall street journal reporter was arrested in march of last year. the us state department has designated gershkovich as wrongfully detained by russia. for the latest, let's go to matt bodner, who is following developments for us. matt. good morning. what exactly is gershkovich accused of? good morning. francis gershkovich is being accused of no less than espionage. and this is one of the most serious charges that can be brought against you in the russian federation today. the maximum penalty is 20 years. and these trials are held always behind closed doors. with the case and all evidence classified as top secret. now, we have seen gershkovich this morning. reporters were allowed into the room for about 10 to 15 minutes before the start of today's

hearing. gershkovich appearing in those videos to put on, as always, a strong face though we have seen him for the first time today with his head shaved, he was moved from moscow to yekaterinburg for this trial. today i want to stress how little we know and how little we can be expected to learn about what is taking place in that courtroom and what will take place. moving forward. the court did issue a statement today saying that investigators accuse him of traveling to yekaterinburg on assignment for the cia to collect information about tank production at the uralvagonzavod plant that is russia's main tank factory. there's little reason at this point to believe that gershkovich will not be convicted of these charges. the us government considers him to be a political prisoner who has been targeted by the russian government as a pawn to trade, for example, for russian hackers and spies detained in the west. more to the point, russia has a shockingly low acquittal rate across all categories of crime less than 1. acquittals in an espionage case specifically, are virtually unheard of, especially now with the war in ukraine. so far. gershkovich his case, by

the way, has followed a very similar pattern to that of another american who's detained for espionage. that, of course, would be paul whelan. he's now on a year, 5 or 6 of his sentence. so unfortunately, francis, we may still have quite a ways to go for gershkovich here. not the best outlook. all right. matt bodner for us, matt. thank you. new this morning after more than five years in prison, wikileaks founder julian assange is a free man. assange pleaded guilty to conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defense information when he published american state secrets through wikileaks. he has been detained in a maximum security prison in england fighting extradition to the u.s. the plea deal was entered in a court in the u.s. mariana islands, and he was sentenced to time served. assange is now en route to his native australia. we're now getting a firsthand look at the growing humanitarian crisis in gaza. the u.s. built a $222 million pier to get aid flowing into the war torn enclave, but as courtney, qb shows us, it's faced several setbacks. you can

see the beach from this american pier off gaza. our first look at the structure, which has allowed the u.s. military to deliver much needed aid by sea. it took about an hour to get from the israeli port of ashdod to here. this is jalen. it's a temporary u.s. military pier system meant to deliver humanitarian aid to gaza. but even after about six weeks of operating, the u.s. military has seen it has some limitations, including whether high seas and winds damaged the embattled pier last month, forcing the u.s. to drag it back to israel for repairs. the weather here today is calm, so aid is moving. but once these waves get to about four feet high, the pier has to be taken apart and moved or it risks being damaged. president biden unveiled the pier with great fanfare during his state of the union. a temporary pier will enable a massive increase in the amount of humanitarian assistance getting into gaza every day. it cost american taxpayers over $220 million, but

is only delivered aid on 17 of the last 40 days it's been online 17 days of the last six weeks, and mainly for weather. so when you look at that is do you still feel that this mission is has been a success? yeah, absolutely. and let me point out why, one is as a commander, personal. my soldiers and sailors have stepped up. we know the weather got us. and when it did, they stepped up the day's deliveries were made. the u.s. military brought in nearly 14 million pounds of aid. often the main contributor to aid for gaza. on any given day, the beach area takes indirect fire nearly every day, according to defense officials. the pier has not been targeted, but aid agencies suspended distribution and haven't delivered that aid since june 9th. now, about 11.5 million pounds of aid are sitting in scorching heat and sun, where it can't help the ocilla family. we live in a tent and eat canned food, and our

children stand in line to get water. the aid is not always available, she says. the american military mission and the pier are expected to leave in the next six weeks. nbc news has learned that the us is working on what happens after jlot. one of the options could be delivering humanitarian aid through the israeli port of ashdod, but there's another option. it's called the blue beach plan. that one includes a private company with their own boats and their own pier. who would do the deliveries, all funded by a foundation. it wouldn't cost the us taxpayers anything. courtney kube, nbc news, cyprus now to the severe weather threat that's shifting toward the east this morning. nbc meteorologist angie lessman is back tracking it all for us. welcome back angie. good morning. morning, francis. great to be with you this morning. and yes, we've got those severe weather, the severe weather that we're going to be talking about through the day today in a couple of different spots this morning. it's centered across parts of the midwest. you can see some of these thunderstorm warnings and watches that are in effect places like kansas city, springfield, right in the middle

of all of that. but notice how expansive this severe threat is today. we're going to look for the midwest through the morning, and then by later today, we'll start to see parts of the mid-atlantic and northeast be impacted by these stronger storms. as the day goes on, it's mainly going to be the wind that we are concerned about, but we of course, can't rule out that hail and those tornadoes isolated in nature. here's the system that we're going to watch that morning. severe threat will be focused mainly for missouri. but notice the i-95 corridor later today will likely see some delays when it comes to that evening commute. so heads up for that. the good news is, by the time we get into early tomorrow morning, most of this is offshore, so we will watch for the severe risk though through the overnight hours. and on top of that, of course, some additional rain in this area, anywhere from a quarter of an inch to a half an inch and up to an inch in some spots. meanwhile, we've got warm temperatures still across parts of the country, 33 million under these heat alerts, with some spots headed to 90 or higher. that's a look at the weather across the country. let's see what's happening in your neighborhood. good wednesday morning i'm chief meteorologist jeff mary. we'll start it off with some areas of fog and temperatures in the 50s. by the afternoon should be a little bit

away from the paris olympics. the city of light has transformed century old venues into modern marvels for the summer games. nbc's chase cane looks at how paris is embracing the past as a way to help our future, building any new stadium or arena comes at a cost to our planet, so understanding like the long list of things, you know, like the bill of materials of the games was key for us to first of all understand it and then challenge it. the head of paris 2024, sustainability, explained how they combed through every detail from the number of chairs needed to renting temporary bleachers for iconic locations like the eiffel tower and most importantly, what they chose not to build. having a conception of which venue you will be use, do you do you really need to build a new venue or can you reuse another one? welcome inside one of only two new venues built for the olympics, one of the things i noticed is that it's a minimal
