hill neighborhood, attacking hotspots after this hill went up in flames around 530. we dispatch a tier two, which is approximately 40 firefighting personnel to the scene. crews were able to get it under control. well, at least they had the forward progress stopped in about 2 to 3 hours. some people living nearby noticed the flames immediately. others got calls from loved ones. i was sitting at work and my girlfriend sent me a camera view from the communications center up there on the hill, and you could see this big plume of smoke. i was a little concerned because i was trying to figure out from the camera where the fire was, but when he got home, firefighters had quickly stopped forward progress. san jose fire says about 30 acres burned. we weren't actively protecting structures, but we were definitely attempting to keep it in the vegetation and nowhere else. yeah, and firefighters were attacking this fire on

problems are mounting in oakland tonight. the top issues, embattled mayor tao's legal issues and the city budget. the city was already facing a nearly $200 million deficit, but now the city council is being warned it may need to find an additional 63 million if the sale of the coliseum doesn't happen quickly. while our deficit is significant, our commitment to our communities, our small businesses, our residents here in oakland is strong. that's a social media post by council president nikki fortunato bass. she laid out two options for balancing the city's budget the first is the budget proposed by the mayor, tao several weeks ago, which includes cuts but protects public safety and critical service jobs. it also includes contingency cuts. if the coliseum misses that september deadline. the second option leaves out the coliseum altogether and means deeper cuts to opd staffing, including freezing police academies and fire station brownouts without incoming academy, there's no way
11:11 pm
that we can fulfill the staffing that need to patrol the streets of oakland and make it very dangerous and unsafe for the citizens of this city. should we start closing firehouses or reduce our resources by any amount? that would be catastrophic for the safety of the citizens of oakland and also for our members. the city will tackle both options during a special meeting this friday. we are on the eve of the first presidential debate tomorrow in atlanta. president biden will square off against former president trump. tv and streaming ratings will likely be sky high. nbc's gia vang has the preview of what those in the bay area political world are watching for. the debate stage is almost set in atlanta, a showdown for president biden and former president trump in the bay area. the s.f. republican party will watch at kezar pub cautiously approaching tomorrow. president trump has has a lead effectively, but not a very large one. i think the biggest issue for the president is
11:12 pm
overcoming the, you know, the positions that are ascribed to him that that aren't, and getting people to believe that. that's one of the tricky things of politics, especially in the, you know, in recent years, with national polls essentially neck and neck. here's a member of the sf democratic county central committee. i think it's very important. i no one should be no one should be. resting on their laurels right now. the sf, d c they'll be holding their watch party at manny's in the mission. we cannot get complacent. we cannot let folks forget about the travesty that was the trump presidency. both candidates now have one presidential term under their belt and several controversies to since they last faced off in 2020, and there are no shortages of issues from reproductive rights to inflation, immigration and wars. the candidates will try to appeal to the so-called double haters voters not thrilled with either candidate, who now make up a quarter of the electorate. berkeley political science professor stephen fish says. to do that, trump has to respond fairly calmly to that and otherwise continue to show

voters to the extent that he can, that he's less extreme than he actually is, he says. biden, on the other hand, needs to stick to this message. he's a better patriot. he's a better defender of the constitution. that has to be his overarching message. he's not going to be able to perform well or even make headlines the next day if he just sticks with reciting his stances on certain policies, debate rules also call for muting microphones when the other candidate is speaking and no audience gia vang nbc, bay area news. and you can watch that debate right here on nbc bay area tomorrow evening live from atlanta at 6 p.m. we're back in 60s ahead. problem solving in paradise. the decision a judge made after someone built a house by mistake on land in hawaii owned by a bay area woman. i'm scott budman with the new way to watch the summer olympic games. not on a small screen, but on the biggest screen possible. we'll show you how coming up and fog is back

property. a judge is now ordered for that house to be demolished. this is a win for a concord woman after a house was built on her property in hawaii. this started back in 2018 when ann reynolds bought a piece of land on the big island of hawaii. five years later, she found out that a home had built been built on her lot. reynolds says pj's construction mixed up lots and bulldozed her entire property. now a judge has ordered the construction company to tear down that new home and pay for its removal. the court basically said, we can't order the land to be restored because there's no way to restore it to its original condition. it's an impossibility. land is unique.
11:16 pm
you know, these are, you know, very old trees. and we can't, you know, naturally, create a situation where the trees are magically back, to being fully mature trees on the property. yeah. so they can take down the house, but they can't necessarily restore the land. reynolds plans to take the construction company to trial, to collect damages. well, san francisco cigarette shop is cleaning up after thieves rammed a car right there through the front door, then ransacked the store. it happened around 3 a.m. at cigarettes cheaper on 17th and geary in the richmond district. police say around ten people were involved and they took off in three separate cars. the owner says the break-in caused about $50,000 in damage. so far, no arrests. okay pasadena kris olympics now just 30 days away. and tonight, a surprise development for team usa soccer ahead of the games, 34 year old alex morgan, who is beloved one of the most

11:18 pm
here on a movie screen? it should be a really good experience, i guess. it's a bigger tv. you can see things more clear. amc will show live olympic events in about 160 of its u.s. theaters, working with nbc to bring the games to movie fans. the theater experience is going to be both this really immersive, up close and personal big screen experience, hoping there's a market for watching with a big group, the sight and the sound and the opportunity to either sit back or lean in and see up close. your favorite athletes. competing is something that is better and bigger and bolder than anything you have in your home. here's how it works. you buy a ticket just like you would to watch a movie, only you're doing it for an olympic event. you can buy a ticket as an individual with a group of friends. you can even reserve an entire movie theater for a watch
11:19 pm
party to watch your favorite olympic event. final olympic run all live, all immersive. they love sports and movie theater is their favorite place. a new way to watch that just might pop. scott budman, nbc, bay area news. we like that. so you have three options here. you can watch it on tv or peacock on nbc or peacock, you can watch it in the movie theater, which is super fun. that's a great take. a bunch of friends, take a swim club. like you said, take a company day or i know, or jeff, you could just watch it live in paris like jessica will be watching. yeah, i know i still have the best option. we like option three. i know we're going to try to fit in your suitcase somehow. popcorn with it sounds like a good deal, too. all right, so when it comes to our forecast, we have two different things working for us to keep hot seconds and one hundredths away tomorrow. the first thing is going to be some fog at the coastline pushing back that heat. second thing is a cool front. it's dry, there's no
11:20 pm
rainfall with it, but again, that's going to keep 90s and one hundredths away, at least for now. we'll talk more about the incoming heat wave in that 7-day forecast. let's show you that microclimate weather. and as we started off on your thursday, we'll begin with some clouds right here near the coastline. and some of that moving to the inland valleys of contra costa, alameda counties through seven and 8:00 in the morning. but we'd see anything really pushed back pretty quickly through 10:00. and then we're into that sunshine here through the afternoon. morning temperatures are going to begin on the cool side, but we can totally handle this. we're down to 54 here through the peninsula. not a bad start. 56 in the south bay. also coming in with 50s over the east bay, san francisco and the north bay. temperatures are going to be on a pretty good climb here through tomorrow, but this is going to be enjoyable for the end of june. we're going to be up to 83 here in napa. a nice day if you got a four day weekend coming your way to hit up the grape vines out there in wine country, 80 in martinez, 84, livermore, 80, in san jose, 70. oakland to palo alto and right here in san francisco will
11:21 pm
be in the 60s. okay, let's fast forward it into this incoming heat. i wanted to show you this area of high pressure looks to be strong enough right now to bring in hot 100. we're talking about a three day event right now. next monday, tuesday and wednesday again next week. might even go into next thursday again. this is still preliminary. could get a little bit of wind right now. wind doesn't look extreme, but anytime you get any kind of temperatures in the one hundredths and the wind kicking up even a little bit, it's going to increase the fire danger. right now i'm seeing winds out of the north 15 to about 25. so based on that we could get a fire weather watch coming in early next week. we're going to have more updates and give you all those details as we continue to get closer to that. let me show you what it means on the 7-day forecast. and right here in san francisco, 60s right into sunday. so looking good here for the san francisco pride parade 1030 in the morning on sunday. and then we get into some 70s here next monday, tuesday and wednesday. and oh man, look at this for the inland valleys will
11:22 pm
be in the 80s through saturday. and then we hit that heat wave starting on next monday. so we'll again have those details with that high fire danger. right now though tomorrow i think is sitting pretty good for us. will be hot for the holiday week, but we'll take it. thanks, jeff. up next, their family, their family camping trip didn't go quite as planned. the wild story of a bear that totaled a family's van, and why they think the bear picked on them. and we have jimmy. hey, everyone. chase crawford is here tonight. plus we have kevin costner mus fromic
