good morning, glad you're up early with me. i'm frances rivera. we're only hours away from the first presidential debate. both president biden and former president trump hoping for a game-changing performance in a tight race for the white house. new polling from the "new york times" and sienna college shows mr. trump with a four-point lead among likely voters. that's still within the margin of error. brie jackson kicks off our coverage with tonight's big showdown. >> reporter: the stage is set for the first presidential debate between president biden and former president trump, with some voters bracing for what's ahead. >> a hot mess. i expect a hot mess. to be completely honest. because just like, i'm pretty sure they're going to go back and forth. oh, you think his policy's good? my policy's great. >> reporter: others are hoping to see each candidate paint a clear picture of their vision for the country's future. >> what both candidates need to do is talk about what they're

going to do for the american people, how they're going to show up as leaders. >> reporter: a new poll shows the majority of americans, 6 in 10, say they will watch thursday's debate, as both campaigns push to get their message across. >> these are the two most dis-liked candidates in presidential history. they need to give voters something fresh. >> reporter: political experts tell me they expect president biden to focus on the economy, touting jobs created under his administration, while attacking trump as a threat to democracy. former president trump could hone in on concerns about crime and immigration under biden's leadership. both sides may roll out new ideas to see how they land with those watch willing. >> because we know there's a lot of measurement with those watching the debate and they can find out what's working and what's not. >> reporter: a historic moment when the current president and former president face off and a major test for the race for the

white house. brie jackson, nbc news. let's turn now to the shocking leak at the supreme court. the court acknowledging that it accidentally posted on their website a document related to a closely-watched abortion case. it could be a win for the biden administration. alice barr joins us from d.c. what did we learn from this misstep from the court? >> reporter: morning, frances. this was briefly posted on the supreme court website before it was taken down. nbc news could not independently verify it, having not seen it, but it was obtained and shared by bloomberg law. we don't know if it is a draft decision or the actual decision. the biden administration has argued that idaho's strict abortion ban violates a federal law that requires that hospitals that receive federal funding must provide abortions to women facing health emergencies, even if the mother's life is not in immediate danger. according to bloomberg, the copy

that it put out, the court is likely going to dismiss an appeal by idaho officials, sending it back to the lower court. meanwhile, women in idaho would be able to obtain emergency abortions in the meantime. at least for now, while the lawsuit continues to play out. a court spokesperson confirmed that this document was accidentally posted to their website, but added that the official ruling has not been released. the court will continue to release official opinions today and tomorrow as well as early next week. and in addition to this abortion decision, we're also waiting for that highly-anticipated ruling about whether former president trump should be entitled to presidential immunity. >> alice, thank you. a dramatic 24 hours in bolivia, as an apparent military coup fails in the capital, lapaz. the rebellion seems to have been called off due to lack of public support. armored vehicles rammed the doors of the government palace. but the supporters of the

president took to the streets. the insurrection was led by an army general who claimed he wanted to restore democracy and free what he called political prisoners. nearly two years after the h highland park shooting, the confessed shooter withdrew his plea in a shocking twist that families thought was going to end. >> reporter: a stunning courtroom reversal, as a man accused of carrying out a deadly mass shooting at a july 4 parade nearly two years ago in the suburbs of chicago rejected a proposed plea deal. police say robert crimo iii initially confessed to opening fire in highland park, illinois, killing seven and injuring dozens more. lawyers were expecting him to agree to a guilty plea deal which would have dismissed dozens of the charges while facing life in prison. but when asked by the judge, you wish to go forward, crimo said

no. >> we've seen him do these things before. he enjoyed the theater today. >> reporter: families who prepared for a possible sentence did not hold back their emotions. leah lost her mom jackie in the shooting. >> he is evil and manipulative and brought us here today, probably knowing what he was going to do. >> reporter: corina mendez and her sister who were at the parade are still grieving their father, eduardo. >> we need closure, and i thought today was the day everything was over. >> reporter: now more heartbreak for families, with the tragic milestone just days away. >> fourth of july is never going to be the same. >> it's hard, because that was my dad's, you know, favorite holiday. but i don't think i'll ever celebrate again. >> reporter: the trial will now push forward to february of next year. meanwhile, next week, the highland park july 4 parade will be back for the first time since the tragedy. back to you. >> kathy, thank you. in minnesota, five people have been charged with trying to bribe a juror. three of the suspects are

already in custody in what's known as the feeding our future trial. the two others were recruited. authorities say they targeted a young woman of color in the jury, asking her to convince the other swjurors that prosecutors were motivated by racism. the minnesota branch of feeding our future was accused of collecting $50 million of taxpayer money after falsely claiming they had served millions of hot meals during the covid pandemic. evacuations were ordered in central oregon after a wildfire spread very quickly. within one day, it burned 1700 acres and left thousands without power. the fire was about 30% contained. meanwhile, historic flooding is causing the landscape to crumble in the midwest, leaving behind devastation across minnesota south ,south dakota and iowa. let's get an update on anymore

rain in the forecast from angie lassman. it was a bumpy, bumpy night for a lot of us. >> it was. we were dealing with strong wind gusts, heavy rain, lots of thunder into the overnight hours. all of that is moving offshore. the early morning commute is going to look a lot better, but weigh we will be watching for another round of thunderstorms. specifically the rockies and parts of the plains. that's where we'll see these thunderstorms popping up with the potential for strong to severe storms. tomorrow the storms will work into the midwest, where we'll watch for additional rain. we know the river flooding has been problematic for days. we'll likely see additional rainfall making that problem all that more worse. 6 million people. rapid city, north platte in that. we're worried about the wind gusts. those could be over 80 miles per hour. hurricane-force wind combusts from rapid city. just a couple things to watch.

through friday, though, there's the rainfall amounts. notice, we could see localized amounts up to 3 inches. again, concern for that flooding across the midwest that has already seen ample amounts of rain. we stay above normal in amarillo, el paso. not quite as impressive as what it has been over the past couple days, but we keep it above normal even as we get into tomorrow and the weekend and early next week. notice memphis sta d chicago. indianapolis headed to the low 80s. lots of sunshine for st. louis and a high of 91 in denver. and that's a look at your forecast, frances. back to you. >> thank you, angie. crest. amazon is priming its own discount store to fend off companies like temu. but first, it looks like hollywood could avoid a sequel to last year's strikes that brought movie and tv production to a grinding halt. cnbc's charlotte reed is here with those details. good morning, charlotte. >> good morning, frances. well, the international alliance of stage employees and alliance of motion picture and television producers have announced that the members have reached a tentative contract deal with the major hollywood studios. it comes as relief after months of negotiations. of course the strikes we saw last year by actors and screenwriters. the deal updated the terms on pay, health benefit, tension, streaming residuals and a.i. among other aspects.

now the full final agreement will be published in a couple weeks and ratified by the union's members in order to officially come into effect. now, on to amazon and the new aspect on that platform potentially. according to cnbc, amazon plans to launch a discount store to fend offer china's e-commerc ch stores temu. they hwill ship directly to u.s consumers. amazon hopes to ship within 9 to 11 days. it is expected to start accepting products in the fall. now last year, amazon said that the number of items sold by chinese sellers on its site grew more than 20% in just one year. >> yeah, it is interesting to check all those sites and compare the prices. charlotte, thank you. the high cost of living has people getting creative by cutting back on just about
