francisco just in time for pride weekend. the security measures being put in place ahead of the festivities. this is today in the bay. and good morning to you. on this thursday, i'm marcus washington and i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia is off. we want to get right to that breaking news which happened while you were sleeping. this is some of the response in oakland, where a warehouse was gutted by a massive fire. now, as you can see right here, this is still an active scene today in the bay's bob redell live for us at the site. this morning with more for us. and bob, the sun is coming up. we're seeing more of that damage there, and firefighters are still hard at work. yeah, within the past few moments while we were standing here listening to you talk kris and, marcus, the fire department actually had a bring out another hose. they have a ladder truck with a hose, but they had to bring out another hose just now because this fire is still not out. it's been burning since 1015 last night. this is a the pacific supply warehouse. they

have roofing material inside. and the fire department says the fire is contained to this building. but as you can see, it's not out. looks like one of the firefighters is trying to vent a window there so they can get in there and spray more water. the challenge is, according to the battalion chief on the scene, is that the metal roof that was on the top of this warehouse collapsed onto all the roofing materials so that roofing material, which is paper and other types of products that are very flammable, they're trapped underneath that roof and making it hard to get to. and then as a result, you still have this fire burning. but again, they say the fire is contained. start around 1015. last night they ended up calling for a third alarm. a fire department here in oakland says it started as a rubbish fire out front. and then spread inside this area. 24th and wood streets. it's a warehouse district and it is loaded with a lot of homeless encampments. not clear if one of those encampments is connected to the rubbish fire, but that is

definitely a possibility. if you were out here, you get a sense that that's, you know, quite possible. back out here live. i don't know if you can see in the background that's 880 heading into san francisco, this is not having appear to be having an impact on traffic. if it is, it would just be looky loos. but as far as i can tell, the speed has been relatively at the limit as as people are trying to get into san francisco via the bay bridge. so again, you got a warehouse fire. unfortunately, this warehouse is gutted, but the fire is contained to this specific location reporting live here in west oakland, bob redell. today in the bay. good to know they were able to get that contained. bob. thank you. well, firefighters they are busy pretty much everywhere right now over in the east bay. they have their hands full with the fire that threatened hundreds of homes. now, this was the empire mine fire started late yesterday afternoon in a semi-rural area near what appears to be an operating oil well along deer

could be worried. that's what we're talking about. and i think we're going to be talking a lot about it over the next few days, but still trying to enjoy the mild weather while we have it. a comfortable summer day with temperatures ranging from 60s near the coast to some low 80s for the inland valleys. but it will be heating up for the first first week of july, which includes our holiday and a high fire danger, as people are going to most likely be celebrating and in some capacity being outside for longer periods of time. but today we're going to see temperatures in the low 70s for parts of the peninsula and low to mid 80s for much of the inland valleys. we'll talk more about that heat coming up in a few minutes. all right. thanks gary. well, turning now to decision 2024. and the much anticipated presidential debate is finally happening tonight for the first time, a sitting president and a former president will face off one on one. president biden and trump are expected to spar on the economy, women's reproductive rights and

immigration all hot button issues today in the bay's alice bar on capitol hill. this morning with more of those details for us. hey, alice, good morning, marcus and chris. we are expecting a really big audience for this debate tonight, and there are going to be some key controls in place. to be sure, american voters who are tuning in can actually hear where the candidates stand on the critical issues in the final hours before tonight's highly anticipated face off, president biden and former president trump fine tuning their talking points. the former presidents likely centered on immigration and the economy, previewed in a call in to a campaign event with black businessmen. inflation is a disaster. it's killing the black community, and it's killing the country. president biden expected to focus on reproductive rights and threats to democracy, both candidates hoping to break through with voters who are skeptical of both so-called double haters making up nearly a quarter of the

electorate. i'm undecided on both of them because, like, i don't really like what they're talking about doing. the debate offers a potential pivot point, with a new poll finding 6 in 10 americans plan to watch for a lot of these undecided voters, biden and trump are the same old , same old. they want to hear something new to ensure voters can hear where the two men stand on the issues, mikes will be muted while the other candidate is speaking, and there will be no live studio audience, something the trump campaign agreed to. but the former president now complains will mean a sterile dead room. the biden campaign setting up a war room to blast out fact checks during the 90 minute primetime showdown. the biden campaign also launching a new digital strategy that includes partnering with high profile social media content creators to make sure that the clips they want to have shared from the debate will be posted far and wide, and both candidates are

planning post-debate rallies tomorrow. president biden in north carolina, former president trump in virginia, marcus and chris stone will be one to watch tonight. all right, alice, thank you. and you can watch it right here on nbc bay area. that debate is going to begin at 6:00 live from atlanta. well, san francisco is gearing up for what is always one of the biggest weekends of the year. and that is pride. san francisco police are also gearing up. chief bill scott later this morning will provide an update on the security measures for this weekend, and for sunday's pride parade. a news conference will happen in the castro. authorities are not citing any specific threats related to pride. but earlier this year, the fbi did issue an advisory suggesting foreign terror groups might target u.s. pride events. well, now to a live look at the state capitol, where lawmakers have approved a new budget. that agreement reached last night. this is ahead of today's deadline. now, the agreement includes spending cuts and some temporary tax hikes to close

that $47 billion budget deficit. and the governor will likely sign it soon. this is all because today is the official deadline for a new state budget. and it also is the deadline for potential november ballot measures. lawmakers are still scrambling to finalize potential bond measures, including one calling for $14 billion in new school construction. 608 now and let's look out at downtown sunnyvale this morning. and things looking lovely there. we have been seeing some cooler temperatures for the last few days, but we should be getting ready for a little blast of heat coming up. we've been talking about the hotter temperatures coming in, and here's a look at our highs for this afternoon. temperatures ranging from low 60s near the coast to some upper 70s for parts of the tri valley and low 80s in livermore. today, we'll be up to 88. in fairfield. it's been pretty hot there and will be about the same for tomorrow. just coming up a couple of more degrees, mid 70s

for oakland. we can see that even though the valleys are going to be hotter, we're still nice and cool near the coastline and will also be comfortable on saturday for much of the bay area, including san jose with a high of 82. mike, you've been tracking some of the bargains for our gas prices. still trying to find those bargains? we'll give you the best in santa clara county. for example, 3.99 at san jose. so still under four bucks. the only one in the south bay. this is platinum gas on tully road. we'll look at contra costa county for 15. is the next number here at concord superstop on willow pass road. and the best price in san francisco is best gasoline mini mart for 29 at the shop on san jose avenue. let's take you to a look at the maps. and we did hear about a new crash southbound 880, actually, maybe two crashes. it's just south of the coliseum between 98th and davis. they're both indicated there, but i think they might be the same. crash reported twice. we don't see a lot of slowing, but just at 98 for a couple of seconds,

we did see slowing as we do have one lane blocked. and so that may be a factor. should be cleared to the shoulder quickly. the bay bridge has a standard backup, so we'll send it right back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, thousands of people are flocking to universal studios this summer, but with hours long wait times for each of those lines. what if there was a chance you could bypass all of them? oh, yeah. you're listening now, aren't you? ahead on today in the bay, we're going to show you the way. the theme park is trying to get you to the front of the line. i suspect that's going to cost you money. how about saving money? amazon going to launch a low cost website to deal with things like timo and shine. let's take you out to the futures this morning. speaking of money, looks like we're going to take a little shine off of the markets as well. well, since we're talking about money, scott, how much cash would it take for you to ditch your car altogether? well, uber is actually willing to pay you. so coming up next here after the break, we're going to take you there with that new offer and the bay area drivers who actually could benefit. keep it right here. you're watching

twitter has moved much of its operation out of san francisco, as have many other companies as work from home continues to catch on. but we're seeing an influx of ai companies filling those gaps. this week on our podcast, sand hill road, i talked with investor scott bassuk, whose firm norwest just opened a $3 billion fund. i talked to him about the future of san francisco. i saw what happened in 2001. i saw what happened in the great recession in 2010. the city tends to bounce back now a lot of what's bouncing back in san francisco right now is powered by ai and all of the sort of excitement and energy and companies being born. so you can find sand hill road anywhere you find your podcast. scott is also a professional musician. he's been on tour, so we talk a lot about the future of music as far as ai goes and what that means for musicians. that's a major issue with musicians, although he compares it to sampling, he said, sampling, you know, back in the day, people said, oh,
6:18 am
sampling would ruin the music industry. and of course it's made it somewhat better. well, i mean, there's a whole like dua lipa's whole album is like exactly samples and inspirations and moving things in a different direction. and he thinks i will do the same. we'll see. as long as they don't take our jobs. yeah. thank you scott, just watch out. yeah, exactly. all new this morning. universal studios hollywood is offering a quicker way to take a spin on mario kart bowser's challenge ride in super nintendo world and all the other stuff. starting this week, customers can add a universal express or universal express unlimited pass to their ticket, which will fast track you right onto the racetrack. right now, wait times are about 90 minutes. universal express pass starts around 99 per visit, depending on the time of year and covers more than just the mario kart ride. we should note universal studio and nbc bay area have the same parent company, nbc universal. all right, listen up to this, because uber wants to pay you to

ditch your car for a full month. well, the rideshare company is rolling out a new challenge. starting july 22nd, 175 people will be chosen in seven cities, including san francisco. each will receive $1,000 to avoid using their car, relying exclusively on other transportation. half of that money will be paid in redeemable uber cash 300. we know what other transportation, right? $300 will be allowed for other transit and there's a $200 voucher for a car rental or car share. uber wants to do it. to learn more about transit habits. interesting. it would be good for some people, but if you like live in san francisco and you work in the south bay, that's transit system is so disjointed and it would make it hard. yes for sure. absolutely. also instead of $300 voucher for uber they could give you maybe $300 clipper card or something like that. if they want to inspire you to. yeah, i guess it's amtrak. yeah, probably all right. well, lots of editors
6:20 am
here on the desk already. if it works out for you. great they should have called us. you actually need to do this instead of that. all right, well, it's time to get out there and enjoy our nice weather while we have it. we are going to see some changes moving ahead, and we're getting closer to the 4th of july holiday. so of course, all eyes on that as you're heading off for work this morning. it's in the upper 40s in san rafael, upper 50s for san jose, and we are seeing a lot more sunshine this morning. just a few of the clouds moving overhead with a light wind to start out our day. and here's a look at our high temperature. we're back to where we were yesterday with some low 80s for los gatos and upper 70s for san jose and summit 80s for morgan hill. now, much of the east bay will range from low 70s to upper 80s depending on where you are. so once again, wherever your microclimate was yesterday, that's what you'll see again for this afternoon. a lot of low clouds and fog for the coastline. so it's staying in
6:21 am
the 60s there and away from the fog. it's going to be in the 70s in redwood city and 77 in palo alto, san francisco, in the mid 60s for the outer sunset and downtown 66 degrees. mill valley will reach a high of 75 and 82 for sonoma and clear lake 89 degrees. and overall, we are going to have a mild weekend. livermore will reach into the low 90s, and then we're bracing for this triple digit heat as we approach the 4th of july holiday. and we know that when we have extremely hot temperatures and a holiday, especially like the 4th of july, there is a high fire danger that goes along with that. so just a heads up that you might want to save your money and not even bother with the fireworks. this year we're going to see temperatures going from upper 80s and low 90s this weekend for the inland areas to over 100 degrees for much of next week. but the good thing is that we're not as of yet, seeing that san francisco warm up. so here we're looking at some mid 70s through
6:22 am
the middle of next week. mike, what's going on with that crash in oakland? we found it. jerry once again lined up this shot. and we see a 98th avenue the exit there and over here just outside the hov lane. so basically in the hov lane south 880 as you come by the undercrossing at 98, the crash is there. there may be a second one. it was reported at davis, but i do believe that the traffic flow and the indicators there show it might be the same report we're looking over here, just barely any smoke visible. so not really an issue for that oakland fire where bob redell continues to report this is off wood street, 880 overhead there. that's an industrial complex there. so that is not the fire. so everything moves smoothly through the area there, as well as pretty much the rest of the bay. back to you. thank you mike. all right. you know, just a few minutes ago we told you about the new state budget. well, as always, the back and forth to get to an agreement includes some hard conversations. and that includes major climate funding cuts. next on today in the bay. meteorologist kari hall explains the impact those cuts could

for climate solutions and investments, with $9 billion in cuts to those programs. i spoke with ellie cohen of the climate center to explain what that could mean for our future. every dollar we spend on climate solutions today will not only save lives, it will prevent billions of dollars of damages for years to come. the final details are being worked out and negotiated as we speak in sacramento, but we know some of the biggest hits are coming to conservation, to transportation, clean energy, building, decarbonization and climate resilience programs. millions of dollars were cut from funding for electric school busses and climate solutions for communities most impacted by climate change, cohen adds. there is something that we can all do to help. we can make a difference when we all speak up because together we can counter the power of big oil. it's time that we stop big oil from making such huge profits and from influencing our elected

thanks. so much, kari. well, we are continuing to follow that breaking news this morning out of oakland, where that fire has ripped through a warehouse. now, here is a live look at that scene. fire crews are still working there. now we know this warehouse belongs to a roofing supply company. it actually sparked around 1015 last night as a rubbish fire outside of the warehouse on wood and 24th street. well, that quickly grew to a three alarm fire. fire crews there had to contain the fire in the main building and actually kept those flames from reaching the yard. people nearby are being advised to close their windows, and this is all due to the smoke in that area. that is a lot of smoke. also new overnight. cal fire quickly got the upper hand on a vegetation fire in the north bay that fire started just before midnight on friesen drive in the unincorporated area of angwin in napa county. the fire only burned three acres, and fire crews were able to stop progress in about 20 minutes. they mopped up the area. the cause is now under investigation. well, new this morning. new hope for

peninsula farm workers. this is in what finally looks like a clear path to a new affordable housing. so this is happening almost a year and a half after that tragic shooting rampage that rocked the farming community of half moon bay. that is where today, in the bay's ginger conejero saab is live this morning and ginger, it feels like it's been a long, drawn out process. but by housing standards, it's moving along. well, i guess, yes, chris, you can look at it that way. it's all relative, right? because plans and talks for this project started last year and we're still, you know, just a year into into things. but there have been a series of marathon long public meetings. there have been changes to the buildings proposal proposals, even prompting governor newsom to issue comments and urge the planning commission here in half moon bay to pass the plans along. so in that way, it's also a drawn out project. but after the planning commission approved
6:34 am
those plans, it happened last month on may 14th. there were three appeals that it received just within ten days, prompting city council to vote on it. the vote took place last night and it was a unanimous decision. yes. motion carries. well, you heard it there. it carried. there were yeses all around. it was a major victory for the farmworker community and farm workers themselves, who will have access to affordable apartments. and you're taking a look now at a rendering from the 555 kelly website, which is the location where these units are set to be built. there'll be about 40 units, and there will be made up of studios, one bedroom and two bedroom units. the new alas farm worker resource center, as well will be in that structure. alas, is for ayudando latinos a sonar. it's a nonprofit organization that provides social care support for the latino community. they were front and center in providing support following the tragic
6:35 am
mass killing of seven farm workers here in half moon bay over a year ago. the aftermath of that tragedy is what exposed the living conditions at local farms, and what farm workers have had to endure the city pledged to improve those conditions now. last night was a big win for alas, and mercy housing, who is also a partner in this downtown housing project. not everyone is behind this, however. those not in favor of the plans, they cite traffic bottlenecks and parking as some of the reasons for their opposition. some also say half moon bay could lose its small town charm. i don't see real enforcement. i don't i don't see measures that will actually follow through. so i'm just, something more appropriate. please. not this project. it's too big. we have had very little, progressive, actions to

help our farm workers. they are the backbone of this community. and to have that statement right out there right next to the ted center, i think, makes a statement that shows our concern for our agricultural heritage. and so with that city council vote, these plans are moving forward. what you're seeing behind me is a house that is what stands at five, five, five. kelly, the address for this affordable housing project. construction is slated for next year, so we'll see some changes to start happening by then with a completion target date of early 2027. so this is really new hope for the farm worker community here in half moon bay. and it is what seems like the final step in getting this approved. marcus and chris step moving forward to what's really needed. and that's more housing. all right thank you ginger two decision 2024 now. and the first

of two debates presidential debates tonight between the two men who want to be and have already been president. and scott mcgrew look a lot of americans not so much satisfied with those choices. they sure don't seem to be. and i think age is a lot of that, right? either man trump or biden will be the oldest president ever be president in their second term bill. bill clinton is younger right now than either biden or trump, and bill clinton was president 23 years ago. age definitely a factor. it was the team biden, who proposed these two debates, the first of which is tonight, and it was the biden team that proposed the rules. the trump camp agreed immediately, perhaps hoping tonight's 90 minute battle battle would expose biden's weaknesses. but donald trump has in the past week or so, changed the way he talks about biden, originally predicting biden would have trouble walking on the stage tonight, now saying biden is a strong debater, raising the very low bar he set

month here at nbc bay area and this morning, mike inouye has a story highlighting the importance of acceptance and assistance. mike. yeah. good morning, folks. in our pursuit to highlight and to celebrate pride, we learned about the center for elders independence and one of their clients in particular, with a very important message he wanted to share. first, we'll hear from ceo maria zamora here at at the center for elders independence. we're incredibly committed to health care equity. you know, we develop an individualized plan of care for each participant. and that is a conversation between the care team and the participant. or they can talk about their goals of care. and for one of those clients, buddy wolf, in the upper corner here, the conversation led somewhere. he'd been waiting for a long time without realizing that this was a possible step in his journey. i knew since i was five years old that i was trans. we didn't have a name for it all these years, but i always knew a

few years ago, i was thinking of committing suicide and i went in and i told our receptionist who contacted my social worker and they, put me in a psych facility, which was actually the best thing that ever happened. and then they they got me into a behavioral program where i learned some really great coping skills. so i now have a really good set mindset for life. i entered this program not even knowing that i could transition. i didn't find out until that meeting with my social worker, and i just lit up like a christmas tree. i was like deer in the headlights. i was like, what? but i was. i soon became the happiest person on earth. this program has literally saved my life, so buddy wanted to share the story for that reason, because he wants people to know that you're never too old to

become your true self, but also maybe more importantly, there are places and people to turn to when you are in need. whatever that need is and of course, the reminder if you or someone you know is in crisis, there's a toll free hotline you can call for help in english and in spanish. the numbers on your screen. now it's also on your cell phone. you just have to dial 988. buddy was lucky enough to find that organization, which then actually helped with his depression, which was the first obstacle, and then they helped him address other goals he had had in his life he didn't know he had access to. so if you can find somewhere great and if you don't, well, you just call that number that we just gave you. all right. it's good to see acceptance is so important whether you're part of the lgbtq community or not. you don't have to fully, necessarily understand someone's path. but accepting, be with them. yeah. as you said, because he's an older an older man. right. which is and his mom didn't know what the name for it was, but she knew what he was going through something and she accepted him that way. and he said that's what saved his life.

6:52 am
and for the south bay. we're headed for the upper 70s in san jose, 84 for morgan hill, east san jose, up to 83 degrees, and upper 80s once again for antioch and concord. a lot of these temperatures look exactly the same as yesterday. 73 in oakland, 72 in redwood city, and for san francisco will be in the mid to upper 60s for the north bay, 80 in napa and 87 in santa rosa. let's look ahead, because we are bracing for some hot temperatures next week. and we're going from livermore highs in the upper 80s and low 90s this weekend to possibly 105 degrees on wednesday, and still in the triple digits for the 4th of july. but the good thing is that it looks like our coastal areas won't be nearly as warm. half moon bay stays in the 60s and low 70s. mike, you are seeing more slowing for the south bay. yeah, we know san jose is going to start showing more slowing. pretty dramatic actually for one on one. we saw that on the live camera extending back past capital expressway and 87 shows slowing

empire mine fire that started late yesterday afternoon in a semi-rural area near what appears to be an operating oil well along deer valley road between brentwood and antioch. winds pushed those flames toward a heavily developed area of brentwood near highway four and balfour road. cal fire air tankers repeatedly dumped retardant in front of the flames. you can see all that pink retardant there, but that's better to have to clean that up than to have to worry about the fire. we know that for sure. all right. in conditions today for fires is still it's about the same. yeah we're going to have cooler temperatures. we are expecting it to increase as our temperatures get hotter. as we go into next week we're going to see some triple digits starting on monday, tuesday, wednesday. and that does include the 4th of july as well. all right. look at that sun. look at the traffic. 92 san mateo bridge. pretty standard what we expect to see this time of day. it's moving south bay starting to build not only through san jose, but now pushing out of san jose for all of these commute routes, pushing
