soccer field, taking a light post with it. how it happened and why. we begin with breaking news out of the supreme court where justices have just issued two major decisions. >> the first deals with the company at the center of america's opioid epidemic. that's purdue pharma. the sackler family agreed to pay billions of dollars to settle opioid-related claims. now it's unclear whether victims and their families will get that money. >> the other major decision focused on abortions in idaho. the majority of the justices said doctors can perform emergency abortions in that state for now. this is the same case that made headlines yesterday because the draft was prematurity posted online for a short time. let's bring in ken dilanian and danny cevallos.
12:03 pm
let's start with you and this abortion ruling, obviously specific to idaho. but what does it mean in the short term and the long term for the rest of the country? >> the question is, who knows? >> in a way it doesn't even deal with people in idaho because it sends the case back to the idaho district court and that injunction there stands. in other words, this case is not being reached on the merits. as it stands right now in idaho, that lower court still has to reach a decision on the merits. so hardly a win for those who are advocating for abortion in idaho, but it will only stall the final decision. if it's a win, it's only a temporary win at best. >> let's dig into that overruling with purdue pharma. how did the justices come to their decision there? >> at issue was a proposed $6 billion settlement between plaintiffs and purdue pharma and

the sackler family who made billions selling oxycontin long after they knew huge numbers of americans were getting addicted. the settlement was backed by all 50 state attorneys general but opposed by the justice department. they found that it violates u.s. bankruptcy law by shielding members of the sackler family from liability without forcing them to go through the bankruptcy process. it was a 5-4 decision. there were liberals and conservatives on both sides. justice neil gorsuch said the court had to interpret and apply the law as we find it, and nothing in the present law authorized the sackler discharge from bankruptcy. it could have a devastating impact on families waiting for this money as well as public health programs to address the ongoing opioid crisis. justice kavanaugh wrote, today's
