good morning, thanks for ending your week with us, i'm frances rivera. we begin in atlanta where reaction is still rolling in after the first presidential debate of 2024. even some of president biden's closest allies are acknowledging that he struggled and got off to a slow start last night. while former president trump repeatedly made false claims. some democrats are concerned about the president's performance, his voice often sounding hoarse. and a biden aide tells nbc news the president has a cold. he did get a sharp attack in about his euopponent's legal ba. >> how many millions do you owe for molesting a woman in public, for doing a whole range of things things, for having sex with a porn star on the night, when your wife was pregnant? what are you talking about? you have the morals of an alley cat. >> i didn't have sex with a porn

star. >> alice barr joins us with more on the biggest night. what did the voters have to say? >> reporter: the debate kicked off with a question about the issue that the majority of american voters says is top on this list. and that's the economy. president biden and former president trump sparred over which administration was to blame for rising inflation. president biden saying the economy was in free fall when he took office. >> if you have to take a look at all the work that was done in his administration, he didn't do much at all. by the time he left things were in chaos, literally chaos. so we put things back together. we created, i said, those jobs. >> the only jobs he created was for illegal immigrants and bounce-back jobs that bounced back from the covid. inflation's killing our country. it is absolutely killing us.

>> reporter: the overturning of roe versus wade was another focus of the debate. both candidates tried to paint the other as more extreme on the issue of abortion, which resulted in this heated exchange over the idea of late-term abortions. >> if i'm elected, i'm going to restore roe versus wade. >> so that means he can take the life of the baby in the ninth month and even after birth, because some states, democrat-run take it after the birth. the governor of virginia, put the baby down until we decide what to do with it. he's willing, as we say, to rip the baby out of the womb in the ninth month. nobody wants it to happen. >> you're lying. that is simply not true. roe versus wade does not provide for that. that's not the circumstance. only the woman's life is in danger, she's going to die. that's the only circumstance in which that can happen. but we are not for late-term abortion, period.

doctors must supply going forward. some doctors are uneasy about the road ahead. >> now we will need to be in this waiting patternagain. i would say our health system in idaho is collapsing under the weight of this. >> reporter: the biden doj argued that federal law requires hospitals provide abortions to women in health emergencies, including grave situations that threaten future fertility. but identify oud only allows abortions to save a woman's life. punting the issue to tlower courts. >> we will continue to litigate it vigorously. >> reporter: the court issuing a short opinion, drawing a sharp rebuke from justice jackson, accusing her colleagues of dawdling on the heart of the question. when are abortions mandated? one still percolating not only in idaho but six other states with strict abortion bans.

supreme court ruled publicly funded religious schools illegal, a new edict was issued. >> every classroom will have a bible in the classroom and will be teaching from the bible. >> superintendent ryan walters now requiring all public schools to include the bible as part of the curriculum, effective immediately. schools will also be required to refer to the bible and ten commandments. civil rights groups decried the requirement, saying it trampled on students' rights of freedom of religion. pichief arredondo saw the botched response to the may 2022 massacre where officers waited in the hallway while school children were being shot dead. he was released on bond last night and did not respond to request for comment. new turbulence for boeing.

plans have been complaining that they've been overpaying for access to coverage. now the lawsuit covers residential and business users in the united states who paid for over a decade for these games on direct television, however, the nfl could be liable to pay more money now. about $14 billion in damages, as the $4.8 billion fine could be tripled under federal anti-trust laws. this would cost each of the 32 teams about $450 million each. the nfl says it's disappointed with the verdict and that the outcome on the media distribution strategy here. it is going to appeal the decision. >> karen, thank you. it is a family affair in l.a. the the lakers selected bronny james with the 55th pick in the nba draft. he will join his father, the all-time great lebron james at crypto.com arena. they will be the first father-son duo to play in the
