with cooler temperatures there. as we take a look at what to expect with our highs this afternoon, we're in the mid 60s near the coastline, upper 60s for san francisco, san mateo at 71 degrees and 80, in mountain view and we're into the low 90s for the inland east bay into fairfield. so we'll talk about the weekend that's coming up in just a few minutes. all right. thanks, kari. all right. well, now to decision 2024. and those sparks flew at the first presidential debate of the 2024 campaign season. now, president biden and former president trump sparring over topics from immigration to abortion, all of those key issues of the race. and the question is, did it sway any undecided voters today in the bay's alice barr joins us from washington with a recap. and so many people are talking about this, alice. and i think that going into it, people thought the conversation was going to go one way. and now after it happened, people are talking about different things. yeah, chris and marcus, it's undeniable that when you have a televised debate, a lot of the

focus is going to be on just how the candidates come across. president biden's task was to go in last night and to dispel concerns about his age, his vigor, his stamina and close allies are acknowledging he just didn't do that with a really halting performance. he failed to land a lot of punches, and it's raising a lot of concerns. while on the other side, former president trump leaned into grievances and to false claims. right now, in addition to that, with the stakes sky high, president biden delivering an uneven performance that left many allies concerned with muted mikes, former president trump appeared more measured than in past debates, but frequently made false claims. every single thing he said is a lie. you're destroying our country. reporter the former president slamming mr. biden over the economy. he's done a poor job in inflation, is killing our country. the president, pointing to gains from what he inherited when he said the country was in chaos. the economy was flat on its

back, 15% unemployment. the two candidates sparring over the border and immigration. we are living right now in a rat's nest. and because of his ridiculous, insane and very stupid policies, people are coming in and reproductive rights. and if i'm elected, i'm going to restore roe v wade in the sharpest exchanges of the night, president biden calling out mr. trump's legal troubles. how many billions of dollars do you owe in civil penalties for molesting a woman in public, for doing a whole range of things, of having sex with a star? the former president denying wrongdoing? i didn't have sex with the star, number one and deflecting. and his son is a convicted felon, president biden later saying of his performance. it's hard to hard to debate a liar. many voters, frustrated by what they saw the feeling i had inside was trump. hell no. he lied through the whole thing. and biden, it's like, oh no, he is really in a bad shape. the

big hit. that's a lot of money. and there are a lot of services that are now on the line. and the city already embroiled in turmoil today in the bay's bob redell, joins us, bob, these are cuts that could have a huge impact. we're not talking about library hours here. we're talking about police and fire. unfortunately, you're correct. good morning to you, chris and marcus oakland city council member janani ramachandran tells us she is, quote, terrified about the options that the city has to close a budget deficit that right now is at $177 million. later this afternoon, the oakland city council will meet to discuss and possibly vote on how to close that gap. now, initially, mayor sheng thao of oakland proposed a budget that included the sale of the coliseum, which would help bring down that deficit. but that sale might not happen in time. so within the past week, the mayor proposed a resolution to her budget that would call for $63 million in cuts. instead which would, as you mentioned, impose

hiring freezes, not only on the oakland fire department, but the police department, which is already struggling with low resources. we need to get back to making public safety our number one priority. and to make not only our neighborhoods safe, our schools safe, but also be able to maintain our businesses here in oakland that, because at the end of the day, it's the business community that pay the taxes for us to deliver community services. that was council member noel gayo, who blames city leadership for these budget problems. along with uncle, acted taxes and missed funding opportunities. we also spoke with former oakland city administrator dan lindheim. he's now a uc berkeley public policy professor. he says it comes back to $50,000,055 million in lost real estate transfer taxes. other potential budget cuts could impact public parks, libraries. as you mentioned kris animal services and scores of

other departments reporting live. bob redell today in the bay. i know so many people in oakland will be listening for that. thank you so much, bob. also, we're going to go to san francisco now where we are looking live as the city has come up. and we now know that san francisco police have a first of its kind device, which they hope will detect fentanyl. it is called the drager drug test 5000. here it is on your screen. the system tests saliva samples for drugs like amphetamines, cocaine and opiates. many law enforcement agencies already use this as a roadside tool in dui investigations. according to the chronicle. the sfpd now can use that device to test for fentanyl. officers are testing those devices free of charge. well, all month long we are celebrating pride and today, marking a signature moment in the evolution of gay rights. the stonewall riots were uprising in new york city that launched a movement. stonewall was a response to a police raid at the

stonewall inn. this is in new york city's greenwich village. it all started 55 years ago today and tonight a celebration will be held there. some media outlets are reporting president biden will attend elton john. also among the list of expected celebrities. and back here at home in the bay area, more than 200 couples will tie the knot at san francisco city hall and a festive celebration of san francisco's pride. the county clerk will give out commemorative pride and marriage licenses. newlywed couples will also get a chance to take photos in the photo booth in the north light court of city hall. it all starts at 10:00 this morning. and now to a live look at the airport in san jose. looking pretty busy and it's going to get even busier. this is expected to be the busiest day for travel ahead of the 4th of july holiday rush. those lines getting pretty long already. let's go to meteorologist kari hall, maybe they're trying to beat the heat. kari. yeah, but

year. the personal consumption index just crossed our desk showing inflation continues to slow. good news and generally we're not just seeing a slowing in prices, but in the economy in general which remember we want or at least the fed wants because slowdowns bring prices and mortgage rates down. j.d. power says electric cars cause owners more initial problems than gasoline counterparts. a new listing says battery powered electric cars, so not hybrids, have 266 reported problems for every 100 cars, so that's nearly three complaints per car. traditional cars had 180 complaints per 100 cars. bottom line the study found that electric vehicles require more repairs than gas powered vehicles across all repair categories. a federal jury handed consumers a big win over the nfl. its sunday ticket tv plan, the court said. the nfl

why passengers say that they only watch the flight maps during that long flight. that's if you have one. now many are posting and sharing that they've made it on those long flights. so i'm asking you three. could you do it? well, i have done it because sometimes i'm bad about charging my phone. so i get on the flight and i'm like, i'm going to watch a movie, i'm going to match the map. but why? why would you even like, i can't even stay awake before we take off. like, as soon as i sit down, i'm just like, out. i know, but, well, i mean, i get disconnecting from technology, i get that, but, like, why not sleep and why not snap, right? like, what's the point? what's one technical question though? what's that? the people who are posting videos they took of them ignoring, they're they're using their phone. i just so technically you're not doing it bailey see the hypocrisy. no it's just less than smart to do that. yeah, yeah. listen, you need your phone because you need the app. you need you need the forecast. the flight definitely goes a lot faster when you watch

a movie or you sleep or whatever. hello? all right, all right, let's get started. you want to stay here across the bay area? because we have the kind of weather they'll see all across the country, whether it's heat or slightly cooler temperatures. we've got it all right within the span of a few miles, we're starting out with temperatures this morning in the 50s, as you're waking up and heading out and take a look at what we can expect in san jose at 8:00, we're at 61 degrees, and then at 11:00 we're already at 75. so the warm up happens quickly this morning, but we are not looking at extreme temperatures for today. we're in the low 80s throughout the afternoon. and then as the wind begins to pick up right at about 6 to 7:00, the temperatures will be dropping. and at sunset, we're already back in the upper 60s. so we're headed for highs in the low 80s for today, but upper 80s in morgan hill and 85 degrees in east san jose. much of the east bay will see temperatures in the upper 70s for oakland, 90 in concord and

91 degrees in antioch. we're going to be in the low 70s for san mateo, but along the coast in the mid 60s and san francisco, 60, in the marina district and 70 in the mission district. our north bay temperatures will be in the upper 80s for santa rosa and as hot as 93 in clear lake napa at 83. let's get a look ahead, because we are bracing for some high heat as we go into our 4th of july holiday. one of our typical hot spots like brentwood. we'll see triple digit temperatures for several days. in fact, all throughout the week, the peak of that heat will be on wednesday at 109 degrees there and still pretty hot across a lot of our inland areas. the good thing is that san francisco, at this point, not looking at any extreme heat, will be in the upper 70s here on wednesday. and mike, are we looking at the typical friday light? no, no, it's lighter. yes. next week is holiday. so we do have lighter traffic and that is typical. i guess the pattern of a pre holiday. no problem.

nice clear sunrise as we take a live look outside in dublin and we are going to continue to see that sunshine throughout today in redwood city. it's in the mid 50s as you're stepping out the door and as we go throughout the day, we'll see those temperatures headed for the low 70s in the early afternoon and eventually making it into the low to mid 80s. we'll be in the upper 80s for morgan hill, much of the east bay, slightly warmer than it was yesterday. while oakland will see a high of 77 degrees, so we'll talk more about our pride weekend forecast and what we can all expect across the bay area. coming up in a few minutes. thank you kari. well, the forecast for the presidential race suddenly a lot harder to predict. yes. scott mcgrew there were two men on that debate stage last night, and it seems like nearly everyone is more focused on one. yeah, no question about that. good morning, president biden. his performance shocked a lot of people going in. a lot of people wondered how he'd do the trump team agreeing to the debate, probably on the gamble that biden would not do well and

biden did not do well with a raspy voice and a cough. president biden did not deliver the same kind of energy that we have seen in speeches or at the state of the union, and at times clearly got lost in his train of thought child care, elder care making sure that we continue to strengthen our health care system, making sure that we're able to make every single solitary person a eligible for what i've been able to do with the with the covid, excuse me, with, dealing with everything we have to do with, look, if we finally beat medicare. thank you, president biden. now, even when mr. biden was not speaking, he did appear unsettled. now tv debates are a visual medium, and biden, while generally making accurate points, did so with uncertainty. former president trump often making untrue statements, but did so

confidently. nbc news reporters in washington say last night has thrown the democratic party into a bit of turmoil. take a look at the new york times this morning, where the columnist said he must bow out of the race. he cannot go on like this. high anxiety from democrats. and i don't think joe biden should be running. let's bring in political science professor larry gersten. larry, give me your impressions of what you saw last night. well, good morning, scott. and you really said it right when you talked about optics. optics is so big in television. it's so big when we're watching something like we saw last night. you saw a former president trump very confident, very expressive. body language was out there, he did have a scowl on most of the time, but that didn't seem to bother many people. he looked at biden and as if he was scorning him, and then you saw president biden, who looked extremely tentative,

who often didn't finish a sentence, or at least left a trailing, who was, looked very unsure of himself, almost like, why was he there? wow, what a difference. now, underneath that were the facts, the data, the information. and biden was often on on key on message, even though it may not have completed a number of his thoughts, the data that he talked about was generally true. former president biden had a series of falsehoods, all the all. yeah all the fact checkers will indicate that. but you know what? people don't look to that as much as they look to what we saw. and therein lies the difference, the optics versus the facts of the conditions of the of the speakers versus the way things really are. larry you heard me talk about that. the democratic party very concerned the columnists in the new york times. i know it's getting ahead of ourselves, but let me just

ask the simple question. it is possible for a party to replace a candidate, even though he or she has been through the primary system. right. it's a question you're not the only one asking this morning. yeah, but but as you said, it's premature, look, there are mechanisms, but they're very, very convoluted in many ways. the easiest way for replacement would be for someone to say, i am resigning. i'm either resigning the office or i'm not running for election again. at which point the party then gets together the national committee, if you will, it gets very dicey because all these delegates have already been assigned. i released my delegates, and then the national committee decides how they're going to manage that, it's uncharted territory, scott. so we really can't be defined indefinite on how it all might work. it is an interesting time. it is an interesting time. larry gerston, i appreciate your your thoughts on this. we appreciate when we can turn to your expertise. thank you for joining

clear and steady voice. we'll hear more from president biden today. he'll campaign with the first lady in north carolina this morning. then go to new york for that observation of the ceremonies at the stonewall national monument to mark the 55th year since the riots. marcus. all right. thanks so much, scott. well, we are celebrating pride month here at nbc bay area, and final preparations are underway for pride festivities in san francisco this weekend. we have team coverage this morning. meteorologist kari hall is tracking our forecast and mike inouye breaks down the street closures already in effect. but first, we want to go over to ginger conejero saab. she's live for us in the city this morning. and ginger you're focusing on that security because that's going to be tight out there. it is marcus kris you know anyone who's been in the city during pride weekend will tell you that it is quite the celebration, which is why safety and security are so important. this weekend really speaks to the history and heritage of san francisco. and organizers say this year they want it to be a beacon of love.

in this moment in our country, especially with the more than 500 anti lgbtq and particularly anti-trans legislative actions that are being mobilized across this nation, san francisco and san francisco pride are saying, no, we reject that. we defy that . and that is the president of sf pride who says that this concept is behind this year's theme or that is the concept behind beacon of love. safety and security are top of mind this year as the summer began with a warning from federal law enforcement agencies about the possibility that terrorist groups could target large events during pride month, it's a warning that has not materialized into any significant incidents, so far, but san francisco's police chief bill scott, says his department, along with federal law enforcement, is tracking anything that could be a problem

. although there's nothing specific. we always have to be ready, and that's what the partnership is all about with the fbi and our regional partners and our federal partners. now we're really kicking things off, especially later today. a massive four mile rainbow flag is going up to kick off the weekend. illuminate the nonprofit behind the bay bridge lights will turn on its lasers tonight. that will happen around 915 until sunrise tomorrow morning. and then throughout the weekend. the lights will be seen from the ferry building down market street, all the way down to twin peaks for the summer of or kickoff. now the lighting ceremony will also include live music, renewal of vows as well for some couples and mayor breed, as well as governor newsom are set to speak at the event. now, here are some notable things with the weekend. i mean, there's so many things that you can choose from to attend, but pride parade will start on sunday at 1030. that is

the very big iconic parade in san francisco. there's also a first breakfast at pride that starts tomorrow morning, saturday at 730 over by city hall. and there's also a first hot box event that has to do with cannabis medications at this year's festival and the annual city hall party is back. this is back. after taking a bit of a hiatus during the pandemic, organizers say that they will be back in full force. now. we have everything that you need to know on the trending bar at nbcbayarea.com. make sure you check that out, especially to know what kind of bags their requirements, the limitations of what you can bring into the festival before you head out. but i know, mike, you're taking a look at the roads, the transportation for the weekend, some of the that will change as well. that's right. it's in evolution right now. ginger over here, civic center plaza un plaza. the prime locations for the celebration which actually starts today, tomorrow, tomorrow and sunday are the two days that

sf pride is demarcated on the calendar, but it's already impacting local traffic as we remove the fancy 3d graphics, let's show you the closures that started yesterday and they're in place now. we have polk, larkin. mcallister will eventually be closed by tomorrow and grove, as well. so that's the perimeter. civic center un plaza. this whole stretch right by the bart civic center, un plaza station. so let me talk about that in a second. but again, these closures are happening right now and continuing through sunday. now, ginger talked about 1030 the parade, but there will be closures along the route along the area on sunday as well. you can use bart as an alternate to get into the area along the route. there are several stations that take you under all the crowds, and aside from the sfmta, which will have to be rerouted for those closures, we have caltrain, we have the ferry, we have bart that will provide you transportation. carry an important note, though also on sunday we not only have pride celebration, the pride parade, but we also have a giants game. so lots of crowds, lots of options and maybe some good weather. yeah, it looks great for the weekend. i mean, we're enjoying sunshine and cool

temperatures here in san francisco. we are headed for the upper 60s for today, but really comfortable throughout the weekend for our afternoons just cooling down quickly as we go into the evenings. as we head down to the mid 50s. and we'll also have some comfortable weather for music on the square in redwood city. we'll be in the mid 70s at the time that the music starts, but then cooling down to the upper 60s by the end of the evening, and then we also have the polynesian market and daly city, the hooey festival going on, and it will be in the low 70s for tomorrow afternoon. and there's also the boots and brews country music festival in morgan hill. now, this is an outdoor event and it is going to be quite warm during the middle of the day. so hydrate more than with just beer. drink some water too. we are going to see it warming up into the upper 80s there for tomorrow and nice weather in tahoe for the weekend with sunshine. our temperatures head for the upper 70s each day and our overnight temperatures in the low 40s, so we'll get a

a lot from the police response to uvalde school shooting rampage two years ago. uvalde's former police chief has been criminally charged. a grand jury issued an indictment against him. now he was booked into jail yesterday and released on bond. that incident cites a texas penal code. when someone intentionally, knowingly, recklessly or with criminal negligence causes a child bodily injury. 21 people died in that shooting, including 19 children. he, the former chief, claims that the gunman could not be stopped because some of those doors in the classrooms were closed. responding officers retreated and held back when they were faced with the gunfire, but it went on for 70 minutes. state farm is looking to raise insurance rates once again, according to the chronicle. the state farm general, the company's california subsidiary, submitted a request to the california department of insurance to increase rates for homeowners.

this could mean rates go up by about 30% 52% for renters, 36% for people who live in condos. if approved, it would be state farm's largest increase in at least seven years and would go into effect next year. right now, state farm insures 1 in 5 homes in california, and it last raised its rates by 20% statewide just in march. well, state lawmakers have followed through on plans to reform california labor laws. this is to head off a possible ballot measure to repeal it altogether. that law is known as the private attorney general act, and it allows workers to file civil complaints against businesses which were advancing the ballot measure, believing that law is abused. now, governor gavin newsom actually pushed for the compromise, which he says happened through negotiations with business and labor leaders to both comply with labor laws and reduce lawsuits. it will modify some of the penalties and in some cases, lower them. but

it also now requires legal action to be initiated by the worker making the claim, and it should take effect immediately following unanimous approval in the legislature. leaders in several bay area cities are among those waiting for the imminent supreme court ruling on homelessness, and whether the unhoused can camp on public property. this comes at a critical time, as one recent study listed four bay area cities among the top 15 nationally when it comes to unhoused people. per capita, napa and vallejo were just outside the top ten. you see that on your screen. san francisco and san jose are eighth and fourth. that data came from the 2022 homeless report for city mayors. well, today or perhaps on monday, the high court may issue its anticipated ruling on the grants pass. homeless case out of oregon. the question is whether people can be fined or jailed for sleeping on public land when there's nowhere else to go. when the shelters are full, it has been ruled by an appellate court

as cruel and unusual punishment, but some city leaders say they cannot regulate encampments. san jose recently adopted a no return zone for areas along the guadalupe river to end the process of those rolling sweeps, but one leading advocate believes that that effort can only work under certain circumstances. once you've offered valid offers of shelter to people who are there today, you can call it a no return zone, which is what mayor matt mahan calls it in san jose. and you can say no one new can come, no one can can set new camps up. and that's feasible, because if we have enough beds to offer people when they first become homeless, they have a place to go. they're not going to need to camp. many people expect that the court will strike down the appeals court ruling. what is less clear is how wide that scope will be a newark city councilman is now resigning over the cost of living in his own personal struggles. when it comes to making it in the bay. mike bucci made that

announcement in a facebook post this week, saying that he and his wife were unable to buy a home in the city. now, according to zillow, the average home value in newark is just over $1.3 million, which is up 10.5% over last year. bucci has served on the council since 2014, and he's also a public works estimator at sillman industries, now the newark city council member salary is under $17,000 annually. his term on the council was set to expire in 2026. the council will now have a special meeting to fill that spot in july. well, today may mark a brand new chapter for the san jose sharks. what we know is that they hold the top overall pick in the nhl draft and all signs point to them grabbing this guy, someone people believe is a generational talent. it's macklin celebrini, his father, by the way, works for the warriors, so he'd be right at home here in the bay area. the sharks are having a draft party

at the sap center today. you can hear more about this in our streaming newscast at 8:00. we're going to go one on one with longtime sports broadcaster or sharks broadcaster drew remenda. and now we want to get a look at that forecast. we're to be talking about hockey when it's so darn hot outside, it's going to be so darn hot outside. and we're going to have a stretch of really hot temperatures going into next week. as we're getting started this morning, nice and cool. and it will be slightly warmer in the valleys today with a light wind. and throughout the weekend we'll be going up a few more degrees, but the heat really hits us tomorrow as our temperatures will be in the 90s and over 100 degrees for several days. as you're getting out the door in oakland this morning, we're starting out sunny, and as we go throughout the next few hours, we're going to see those temperatures in the upper 50s to the low 60s at 10:00 and then low 70s at noon into the afternoon. we're going to see our high up to 77 here, 86 for martinez and about the same in

dublin and 90 in concord, mostly 80s for the north bay. but then tomorrow we'll start to see a few more low 90s, like santa rosa, reaching a high of 92 degrees. well, in san francisco it will be in the low 70s and low 80s in mountain view with mid 80s for san jose into the day on sunday. it's also kind of a repeat, but we are seeing those temperatures ticking up a few degrees for spots like fairfield, we'll reach a high of 95 degrees in san jose will also , like the rest of the bay area, see a big ramp up in temperatures. the peak of the heat will be on wednesday. we're looking at a high of 101 degrees and still really hot and dry going into the 4th of july. so looking at our 7-day forecast, a lot of numbers on here, a lot of heat for next week and today will be the mildest day. we'll see in quite a while even leading into our holiday week. and mike you are seeing some delays starting to pop up. yeah i didn't think we were going to see this much traffic flowing

deficit. but that sale now might not happen in time. so the mayor proposed a resolution to her budget that would call for $63 million in cuts. instead, it would impose hiring freezes not on the oakland or the police fire, nor the police department. well, let's take a live look over at the airport in san jose. and today going to be a busy day there for air travel. this is supposed to be one of the most busy days for the 4th of july holiday rush. you can see those lines they're already forming. so if you're planning to go somewhere, make sure you leave early. final preparations. now underway for pride festivities in san francisco ahead of the festival this weekend. safety and security of course. top of mind as the summer began with a warning from federal law enforcement agencies saying that there was a possibility that terrorist groups might target large events during pride month. san francisco pd will be on full deployment all weekend and later today, a massive four mile rainbow laser flag from the
