gate bridge as we get ready for pride taking over san francisco. thank you so much for starting your sunday morning with us. i'm kira klapper. cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast. it's already a gorgeous morning out there. oh yes, signaling to some major changes ahead when we have a clear view of san francisco there. how about if you're going to the city for the pride parade? a beautiful start to the day and continuing into the afternoon, we're going to keep the party going. parade starts at ten, 30, 65 degrees. you don't even need a jacket and all the celebrations out there, and we'll do low 70s for the afternoon. here are those changes that we're talking about. we are going to jump forward into july with some really hot temperatures. our heat wave starts tomorrow, but the excessive heat warning yeah, it got upgraded from the watch yesterday. that's going to go into effect tuesday into friday. and some spots in the immediate bay are already in that shade of orange heat advisory. and that includes santa cruz as well. so we'll talk about the range in

temperatures 4th of july outlook and the cooldown. it might be hard to come by. we'll talk about all those details coming up in about 15 minutes. kira. all right. cynthia, thanks. we'll see you soon. our nbc bay area app is a great tool to have on your phone to track the temperatures in your neighborhood. we'll also send alerts about the heat straight to your phone. you can download it for free by pointing your phone's camera at that qr code on the left of your screen, and as mentioned, today is the day the pride parade in san francisco. thousands of people will be in the city celebrating. beacon of love is the theme, and acclaimed actor billy porter is the celebrity grand marshal of 2024 sf pride. the celebration already underway in san francisco, the pride celebration kicking off yesterday in civic center plaza. the parade and celebration today are considered among the largest lgbtq plus celebrations in the world this

year. safety is top of mind. this after federal officials warned about the possibility of terrorist groups targeting large events during pride month, but no significant incidents have happened and police say they are ready for people who are coming out today to celebrate. organizers do not want them to worry. instead, they say focus on the festivities and the fun. what i'm most looking forward to is just honestly, just the overall experience of everything. i've always heard how san francisco is the biggest pride event, just seeing the history of the movement as well and just being a part of it. organizers expect about 50,000 people in the parade down market street. if you are among those headed to the city today, the streets you see here in red are already are closed for the parade. those are beal main, spear and stewart streets between market and folsom and the big closure in red market street is closed to traffic for about two miles from stewart

street all the way to van ness. in terms of parking, mission street will be a no parking zone for that same two mile stretch between the embarcadero and van ness. the parade starts at 1030 this morning. floats will start at beale and market and roll all the way down market toward civic center plaza. that's where the sf pride main stage and daylong party continues. and this pride weekend, one store in san francisco's castro neighborhood is doing what it can to fight book bans in other parts of our nation. today, in the bay's alyssa goard explains how you can buy a book to be sent to an lgbtq plus organization in a more conservative area. this bookstore that specializes in lgbtq plus books usually has its busiest day of the year. the saturday before pride. but this year, it's not just focused on sales, it's also focused on a new program. as san francisco's pride festivities fill the

streets outside, a different kind of pride is being boxed up inside fabulosa books. we are the neighborhood bookstore in san francisco's castro district, which of course is one of the oldest gayborhoods in the country. store employees are upset over the number of books getting pulled off of school and library shelves around the country. the american library association says the number of books challenged in u.s. libraries spiked to the highest level. it's ever documented in 2023. of those books nearly half share the voices and experiences of the lgbtq, plus community and people of color. it's so important for people to have to see themselves represented. so last year, a fabulous employee started books not bans. they send all kinds of queer books to organizations in states experiencing bans at no cost to those organizations. if you're a young person and you're not in a supportive family, you might have to read it at the lgbt

center. you know you're not going to. you can't have your amazon book delivered to your home. we don't have a lot of space. all the boxes are packed in this tiny storage closet in the store. so far, they've sent 35 boxes of books to states, including oklahoma, alabama, tennessee and south carolina. anything that we can do like to help, like people get access to books that they should be able to read is a good thing. i came out maybe 20, 25 years ago, and at that point, you know, this was kind of pre-internet, right? so how i kind of got word of like what i could become and what was out there was through literature, right? was through books. fabulosa staff say customers are overwhelmingly supporting this effort. we're not going to stop. as long as they keep doing these silly bands. we're going to keep on sending books out. alyssa goard today in the bay area, a pride event that was officially canceled went on, albeit unofficially. yesterday, hundreds of people packed into dolores park and took off for the dike march through the

castro. the march has been a part of sf pride since june 1993, but this year, organizers say they could not pull the march together. still, as you see there, revelers celebrated with costumes, music, signs and flags. you can find our guide to pride on our website. there you'll find a list of events, schedules, maps and street closures. just go to nbcbayarea.com and click on the link at the top on the trending bar. we're going to turn now to the south bay, where san jose police are investigating a string of hit and run crashes, all believed to be caused by the same driver, a driver on north first street called police to report another driver who intentionally rammed into them and then drove away. soon after, several additional calls came in about the same driver hitting other cars and driving off. officers found that driver chased him to the area of fifth and julian streets, just a few blocks from san jose city hall and san jose state's campus.

after a brief standoff, the man did surrender to police. the whole chain of events lasted about 45 minutes. fortunately, no one was hurt in all those hit and runs. word from sj pd on what charges if any, that driver will face. we're still awaiting word restaurants, surcharges will remain legal in california, but they do need to be disclosed. governor newsom signed that controversial bill into law yesterday. the so-called junk fee law is set to take effect tomorrow. it prohibits businesses from charging hidden fees on things like concert tickets and hotel rooms. but the bill, signed yesterday, gives restaurants a last minute exemption from that so they can continue to charge fees outside of the listed menu price, as long as they disclose those fees on their menus or their displays. restaurants have one year to make sure their displays meet those new requirements, also taking effect

tomorrow. a new law meant to help people feel safer when out drinking at a busy bar, people will be able to find out if someone slipped something into their drink when they weren't looking. today, in the bay's marianne favro explains what's in your drink at a crowded bar. you may not notice if someone added something to it while you weren't looking. now you'll be able to find out right away. starting monday, a new state law will require bars to offer customers a date rape drug test strip. it's a security for those coming out to drink. sometimes you get carried away in a conversation. you might turn your head for a few seconds or so, and people are really slick out here and you just got to be careful. and i think that it's just a wonderful idea. the test is quick and easy. just place a few drops from your drink on the designated area of the card. if it turns blue or black, there's a good chance you've been roofied. the test can detect the

presence of date rape drugs like ketamine and ghb. we'll have our bartenders and our front door managers and as well as our security guards having those cards out for anybody. the assistant general manager at san pedro socal says he supports the new law. i think it's a great idea. i think it's a great idea to protect the public and a great idea for people to come into your restaurant and make sure that they have a voice in their own words by getting one of those cards. so i think it's a great opportunity for us to make them feel more a part. the law only applies to bars with what's known as a type 48 liquor license. establishments that don't comply could face penalties impacting their license. the new law requires bars to provide the test kits, but they don't have to be free, so you could be charged for one. under the new law, bars are also required to post signs at the entrance, the exit, and in the restrooms explaining that these test kits are available. this is what those signs look like. britney says she believes the new law will give her peace of mind next time she goes out. i

a coworker after a bartending shift when he interrupted three men trying to steal his catalytic converter. the 37 year old general hospital actor confronted the men and was shot and killed, many attending the walk were heartbroken and still fed up with the crime. lapd does not have much to say and go on this case, they say that the suspects were wearing dark clothing and drove away in a dark colored sedan, and they don't know much else. back here in the bay area, fireworks for cash, no questions asked. the san mateo county sheriff's office is working to get illegal fireworks off the streets. before the 4th of july. the department held a fireworks buyback event yesterday in redwood city. deputies collected the fireworks in exchange for cash. fireworks are illegal in san mateo county, except in pacifica and san bruno. we have posted everything you need to know to celebrate the 4th of

all right, back to pride weekend. it's also for the dogs happening today. the third annual doggie pride parade and adoption event. it's happening today in berkeley. there will be a costume contest, a drag performance at 245. animals will be up for adoption fees are waived. berkeley humane executive director jeffrey zerwekh says they're at full capacity, and events like this are needed. and so this is a great opportunity to find families to take home. so many of these loving pets. and we have puppies, dogs, cats and kittens available this weekend. again, that third annual doggie pride parade and adoption event takes place today from 1230 to 3 at 2,709th street in berkeley. time now to check in with cinthia pimentel for a look at our microclimate forecast. i trust that your dogs have some pride gear they'll be wearing

today. they don't. they usually run around without any vests or anything just because they're large, and they just need all of the wind and the weather. it's hot, right? it is hot. let's check in on berkeley. start our forecast there for that wonderful event. they really do change your lives. i encourage adopting there. let's go out and take a look at our day planner there. we'll do 60s by mid-morning. we're upper 60s to some 70s and 80s. as you head out there to berkeley later on this afternoon. so what does the rest of the bay area look like? yeah, nearing that 80 degree mark in hayward mountain view. also, we'll do some low 70s along the peninsula, 66 in half moon bay, but 81 for a beach day in santa cruz. and it only warms up from there the rest of the day and the rest of the week. 92 in santa rosa, 95 in concord today and we'll do 90 in morgan hill. meantime, 82 in downtown san jose tomorrow. the heat starts to build. we start a new month, and we start to warm up these temperatures. look at the mercury rising in fairfield

already at 100 degrees 99 in concord, santa rosa, not far behind, 75 in san francisco. if we're talking mid 70s in san francisco, you know it's going to get warm as we set up this pattern of high pressure that is really starting to center around the pacific and will be stubborn to mix out of here, giving us a long duration heat wave. we go into the excessive heat warning it got upgraded from yesterday, tuesday to friday. that is a long stretch of time where we have to deal with this sweltering heat. the cooling in the afternoon hours also going to be a struggle. so i highly recommend you take advantage of today to set up your areas. make sure that you have enough water, medicine and finding a place to cool down libraries, the mall, the movies, even the interior bay right there. we've got that heat advisory and we'll watch for san francisco to go into one as we progress through the week. not only the heat, but we have to worry about the fires heading into the 4th of july. we have a red flag warning includes parts of the north bay solano county

and through the sacramento valley. as we watch that low humidity, the hills bone dry. so let's take a look at these temperatures. what can we expect ? tuesday. the beginning of this heat. we have hundreds all around the parts of the north bay. east bay down into the south bay as well. san francisco and the inner bay, 80s and 90s. i think the peak of this heat, though, is on wednesday, 100 degrees to possibly even some one tens in ukiah, clear lake, that area and the immediate bay, some 90s 84 in santa cruz that is hot as we go on into the 4th of july, super hot and dry out there. please leave the fireworks to the professionals as we see a little bit of that cool down. but again, that high pressure will be stubborn to mix out of here. san francisco will look like parts of the east bay as we go on into the 80s. for parts of the middle of the week here in our inland valleys. oh, those numbers very, very dangerous heat. we could also see concerns with air quality and concerns with people going to the hospital. so please just

course, saturday and sunday, full closures around the perimeter for civic center and un plaza because of the celebration. and then we have that parade as well. and that's sunday, of course, along market street. you'll find that route closed. as the parade comes through. it will reopen in stages, starting back at the embarcadero. but you know, that will disrupt muni service for the pretty much all morning. in order to get through the area. there will be some minor delays because of those reroutes. of course, another option underneath market is at the top. that's bart. bart will have you ride with pride. they've added extra service along the parade route, so great option for you. same thing for the sf bay ferry and caltrain. in fact, good options for you not only to get to pride to avoid the need to park, but also there's a giants game as well, so that will add more traffic, more people, i should say coming into the city. so kira plenty of options. we have pride all weekend. and of course let's not forget, let's go giants. oh yeah, but not after last night. mike. thanks. this pride weekend, one san francisco bookstore is working to fight book bans and other

more conservative states by mailing out books featuring lgbtq plus voices. fabulosa bookstore in the castro specializes in queer books. staff. there say they were upset to see so many book bans enacted in schools and libraries around the country. so last year they began a program called books not bans. they're contacting lgbtq plus organizations in states like oklahoma and alabama and sending them books that they're in need of. this is all free for the organizations receiving the books paid for by fabulosa customer donations. so far, the store has sent 35 boxes of books. if you're a young person and you're not in a supportive family, you might have to read it at the lgbt center. you know you're not going to. you can't have your amazon book delivered to your home. this is a look at the tiny closet where all the boxes are packed. the store says they plan to continue doing this as long as the organizations in other states say they're in

bring high winds and strong rain to the caribbean, according to an advisory yesterday. hurricane beryl was about 785 miles east of barbados, with maximum winds of about 65mph. the storm is forecast to hit the windward islands late today. officials say the storm's impact could be destructive as water levels could reach 5 to 7ft above normal tide levels. a hurricane watch is in effect for many caribbean islands. the biden campaign kicked into full damage control as calls for president biden to pull out of his reelection bid have not quieted down. nbc's aaron gilchrist reports. president biden attending fundraising events in new york and new jersey doing post-debate damage control, saying he converted undecided voters and promising, quote, we're going to win this election. the democratic national committee, holding a virtual check in meeting with members and leaders from the

debate, showing 60% of voters said biden should be replaced as the democratic candidate, the new york times editorial board out friday, with a blistering call for biden to quit writing the greatest public service mr. biden can now perform is to announce that he will not continue to run for reelection. the first lady, an unofficial adviser and the president's fiercest defender, saying they're not going to let 90 minutes define his four years as president. these perils the world is facing, there is no one that i would rather have sitting in the oval office right now than my husband. that was aaron gilchrist reporting for us back here in california. tomorrow marks the start of july, and a slew of new laws will take effect. one of them is aimed at keeping californians safe while enjoying a night out. the new bill will require bars to offer customers a date rape drug test

million. the toll increases are part of a plan passed in march by the golden gate bridge highway and transportation district, the agency has already been increasing tolls on the bridge by $0.35 per year since 2019. that's not the only thing that might leave a dent in your wallet. also, tomorrow's state gas taxes are set to increase. right now, drivers are paying about $0.68 a gallon for state taxes, and tomorrow that will go up by $0.02. it's not just california for once. six other states also increasing their gas tax. it's typically adjusted based on the consumer price index and inflation. right now, no surprise california has the highest gas tax in the country 40 past the hour right now. still to come on today in the bay. it's official they have punched their tickets to paris. coming up the local gymnasts who will be representing team usa at will be representing team usa at the olympics diabetes can serve up a lot of questions.

to this. hearing aids apparently can slow cognitive impairment. that is according to new research presented at a society of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging annual meeting. these are pictures of a patient's brain who suffers from cognitive impairment and untreated hearing loss. images of the same patient's brain two years later shows more of a brighter red color, which corresponds to more severe impairment in contrast to what you see here, a group of people suffering from cognitive impairment who did use their hearing aids did not undergo the same decline over the two year period. the change was really quite significant in that when we looked at the rate of loss of function in different parts of the brain and people who had hearing impairments but were not using hearing aids, we could see an acceleration of loss of activity, especially in the frontal parts of the brain. medical experts have known for some time that people with hearing impairments are at increased risk for developing dementia or alzheimer's disease, so doctors say that if you
