prosecution? our washington insider is live with more is with what is at stake. and the impact it will have on the 2024 election. all right, we're telling you now, get ready for the heat. we are tracking triple digit temperatures for this week ahead. how hot it's expected to get. and the warning that pg&e is already giving some customers about possible psps, those safety shut offs, a number of new laws now in effect, including one which would do away with hidden fees. the way this will impact your next purchase. this is today in the bay monday morning, first day of july. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia and i'm kris sanchez. marcus washington is off. we want to take a live look outside in dublin and if the weekend seemed toasty, get ready because it's going to get even hotter. some places will hit triple digits this week, and there's an excessive heat warning on the way. also, you may not be able to count on your
5:02 am
fans or your air conditioning to stay cool because pg&e is warning that the heat could trigger public safety power shut offs in more than a half dozen counties, including napa and solano. you'll remember that those psps happen when high winds and dry conditions increase the risk of fire. the utility does expect only a handful of customers in those counties to be impacted, but if you're one of them, it doesn't matter how many there are. we want to take a look at the forecast with meteorologist kari hall. yeah, we're starting out with a look at some of the counties highlighted in that psps. and it does begin tomorrow. you'll want to make sure that you're signed up for those alerts. and you're able to get information just in case. they do give you a pretty good heads up in advance. and it's not the entire county. it's some of the areas that are in the higher elevations and are most likely going to have that increased fire danger as we are dealing with not only a hot temperatures, but also a breezy
5:03 am
wind. and we're going to have the longest duration of a heat wave that we've had so far this year as our temperatures for the bay head for the 90s and the valleys, it's going to be in the 90s and even up to over 110 degrees. so very high fire danger coming along with this. temperatures come up several degrees today with a moderate heat risk for our interior valleys. but you'll see how much hotter it's going to be tomorrow and how that major heat risk will continue to spread. we'll talk about this and what's ahead as we go through the week. coming up, mike, you're looking at some early slowing kari. and some of it was because of an early crash. well, let me show you overall green, green, green reopening the flow right here through niles canyon. but we're looking at over here early slowing out of 205. there's a crash at mountain house now there was early slowing back here. kept things lighter back toward grant line road. but now things have kind of spread out for the morning. backup all the way back in through the same area. now, mountain house and grant line road. those are sort
5:04 am
of areas that folks reference when we're talking about the start or the end of the commute and where things loosen up here for westbound 580. so from that point, we're just now seeing a couple minutes more in the next in the last beginning of the commute, starting trying to say that things are starting to get slow out of the altamont pass, but no surprises other than that crash out of tracy, a smooth drive across the city in towards san francisco. look at that. and there's that laser lit up for pride. so we still have folks recovering from the weekend. i think back to you. yeah. no doubt. all right. thank you very much. mike 503. right now we're nearing the end of the supreme court's current term, and several key rulings hang in the balance with major decisions expected. so that, of course, includes the highly anticipated ruling on whether former president donald trump, as a former president, should be immune from prosecution when it comes to his federal election interference case today in the bay's brie jackson joins us live from washington. bree, nice to see you. this is a decision both sides everybody's been waiting to hear. that's right. laura kris. good to see you. well, at
5:05 am
issue in this case, whether donald trump can claim immunity from prosecution for at least some of his actions in seeking to overturn the 2020 election, trump faces a four count indictment for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, which culminated in the january 6th insurrection on capitol hill. lower courts rejected trump's claim of broad immunity, prompting his legal team to appeal the case to the supreme court. now, even before the decision, the high court is facing criticism from the left for agreeing to hear the arguments in the first place. the move prevented a trial from taking place in march, making it difficult, if not impossible, for a trial to begin before the election. even if the supreme court rejects all of trump's immunity arguments and says a trial can take place, it will likely not begin until september at the earliest. if a majority of the justices side with the former president, the charges would then be dismissed. now
5:06 am
based on oral arguments, it appears likely that the court will conclude that there could be some conduct alleged in the indictment that is subject to immunity. the justices could set a new test for determining what official acts fall under that category, and it could then send it back to the lower courts to determine how that affects trump's indictment, which would delay the trial even more. rulings are expected to be released at seven this morning. we will definitely be watching and analyzing. thank you so much, bree. well, this morning, north korea test fired two ballistic missiles. that is according to the south korean military. this is one day after north korea threatened an overwhelming response to recent us military drills with south korea and japan. military sources say one of the missiles failed and landed inside north korea. the other, though, landed in the sea of japan. just five days ago, north korea tested a multi-warhead rocket designed to

watch our half hour special right now on nbcbayarea.com or wherever you stream. as of about five hours ago, a slate of new california laws took effect, which mean all sorts of changes, and one of them includes a ban on junk fees. but in a late twist, restaurants will be spared the worst of that ban. a last minute deal by lawmakers allows restaurants to keep the fees provided. the added charges are clearly disclosed. one diner said he doesn't expect to notice much difference. however, this will mainly affect you when you buy a concert tickets or book hotel rooms. i've gotten used to the fees being there, so at least it'll be apparent before i order what i'm actually ordering, kind of what the total is going to be. a lot of restaurants across the state have struggled to stay open post pandemic, and that's why lawmakers introduced that last minute legislation. the goal is to provide more menu transparency without further harming the industry. well, that's just one of numerous laws
5:09 am
taking effect today. the other is the so-called no roofies law. many bars and nightclubs will now be required to provide date rape testing kits for patrons. the businesses will also be required to post signage informing customers the kits are available. new law takes effect today, benefiting new renters. any new rental contract can now only require one month security deposit. already existing rental agreements with larger deposits are not affected. landlords may also still ask for additional fees at the end of a lease period, provided the damage exceeds one month's deposit. a new law makes it easier for people who need to repair their devices. the right to repair law now requires manufacturers to provide customers or repair shops with the parts, tools and instructions needed to service or repair an electronic device. the law applies to any cell phone costing more than $50, along with some home appliances, televisions, and video recording

equipment. well, with the start of the nba's free agency period, the warriors are already leaving little doubt that they are turning the page at this one point. at this point, one thing is for certain, and that is that chris paul will not be back next season. the warriors waived him yesterday and there's already a report that he agreed to a one year deal with san antonio. now, klay thompson is also certain to be gone. he is now an unrestricted free agent and he is reportedly in talks with at least four teams. the warriors are not among them, developing now a major hurricane closing in on the caribbean, hurricane beryl is currently a category four storm. this is new video posted on x from barbados, capturing the rain and wind. the center of the hurricane is set to make landfall this morning on the windward islands, with up to six inches of rain expected. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the timeline of this really powerful storm. could
5:11 am
have a big impact on holiday travel. kari. absolutely. and this is going to continue to make its track off towards the west over the next few days. but the storm is over some extremely warm water, and it's the earliest it's formed in that area during hurricane season. so it is very intense and is producing winds at 130mph. but the good thing is that it's moving very quickly at 20mph. and that's the reason why they're only expecting about six inches of rainfall, as it continues on its westward track to the south of haiti and the dominican republic, south of cuba, it will be making its way toward the yucatan peninsula over the next few several days into wednesday, as well as thursday and may still be a very powerful hurricane. so we'll be watching that here at home. we're looking at a big warm up across the bay area, including san francisco and we're also going to see those temperatures very intense for a long period of time. so we'll talk more

of how long it will take to clear. if chp gives us that update, we'll let you know what they say. well good morning everyone. good morning mike i was kind of surprised to see all of those cars because it should be a slow business week, as many companies in the bay area gave their employees the entire week off. it's 1st of july, so we're into the third quarter. stock market did very well in the second quarter. that ended last week. s&p 500 up 15% in just those three months, 15% would be a great return on the year. boeing aircraft is in the news. i'll get to them in a second. ginkgo bioworks they trade is dna. they're laying off based in boston but have offices and labs in emeryville. big layoff, about 35. company filings with the state show that will be about 50 people in the bay area. they're trying to turn cells into factories of sorts, making things like drugs, even cosmetics. a bankrupt bitcoin bank that's been shut down for going on ten years now, finally going to pay back its depositors this week. and the amount of

5:19 am
people say, no, i'm fine, but everyone else is miserable and that we're seeing that right is that people are taking advantage of all these flights and out. they go. when they behave at retail, retail sales are still up. they're spending, but they think everybody else is miserable. or maybe they just want more. hey. everybody does. yeah, american way. all right. thanks, scott. scott. employees at a south bay movie theater are feeling mixed emotions after someone stole their joy. the cutout of joy from the movie inside out to, of course, is what we're talking about. it happened on saturday at pruneyard cinemas in campbell, and the surveillance video shows the moment that someone swiped that joy. we're going to call that person kill joy. inside out two is a film about a young girl and her personified emotions. as for the movie itself, inside out two is the newest member of the billion dollar club. that's right, the animated film raked in more than $1 billion worldwide. you can't just bottle

5:21 am
area under a heat advisory, which is basically a step below that excessive heat warning. we are going to have a very slow cooling for the inland areas for the evening, and it's most likely not going to be that chilly during the overnight hours as we deal with all of this heat, you want to make sure you're drinking lots of water if you have to work outside, take breaks in the shade and remember pets and livestock and anyone who has to be outside in this heat. and remember that a parked car can reach over 150 degrees for the 4th of july. those barbecues you want to be careful with any of the coals. and also if you're going out to enjoy some water, wear a life jacket. people unfortunately, are become victims of any drownings and things like that during the holidays. so we want to avoid that. and then in these areas in red will be under a red flag warning due to the extremely low humidity and the high winds and a high fire danger. here's a look at our temperatures today.
5:22 am
most of us will have a minor to moderate heat risk as our temperatures range from mid 70s in san francisco to upper 90s in concord and 102 in vacaville. tomorrow is when the heat really starts to hit us, and we're seeing widespread triple digits for areas from the south bay to the east, bay to the north bay, and even more extreme, on wednesday. unfortunately we are not going to see this heat really backing off for quite a while. take a look at brentwood hitting 111 degrees on wednesday. there is really no cool down in sight over the next ten days. and mike, you've been watching the commute in a crash. yeah, the crash right here at the berkeley curve. things are slowing down quite a bit now. it looks like maybe there might be another emergency crew in the area, or perhaps a secondary crash. whatever the flashing lights are, we'll check that out. but here's the original crash. it involves a big rig that's a tractor trailer and a pickup truck as well. and it's just under a hidden partially by this overpass right here. that's the commute lane getting over
5:23 am
toward the bay bridge. this is the standard lanes. you see the divider, and there's some folks are heading south onto 880. so that's a tough spot. once the backup starts to build any more than that, right now, it's only what you see on that camera for the slowing there. and there is some slowing for concord. i think that might be a road crew, but i'll double check on westbound highway four. back to you. sounds good. we'll check back with you. it is 522 next on today in the bay, nbc bay area responds a company 5000 miles away is sitting on his 150 bucks. we're going to go the distance to get it back. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura, nbc bay area responds next local weather on nbc bay area is sponsored by provident credit union. make life easy next. kelly. it's the many sides of john cena. you were bullied as a kid, as a scrawny kid. oh my god, your voice. you should do an app or something in 250ft. make a right today at three on nbc bay area. do i need a pair of vintage cowboy boots?

times. the company hasn't said what type of incident it was or who may have been behind it, which tells me that somebody actually inside their network and crippled their ability. so what they have done is like unplugging like an unplugged, you know, the computer, they unplug the network and trying to assess the damage and see how to deal with it, hoping that the money is still there. i think that's a lot of people's concerns. looking at the comments on the twitter feed is, is our money safe? so yesterday there, we did see a couple of customers drive up to branch atms in a little bit of a panic because they couldn't see their balances online. they can't see their balances on the atm either. but again, they are able to wish withdraw cash here, which we just saw man do within the past few moments. reporting live here in dublin. bob redell today in the bay. stressful time for those customers. thank you bob. well, north bay commuters waking up to a new reality. higher tolls to cross the golden

gate bridge. and the latest hike takes effect this morning. mike inouye is here so how much more is this going to cost us? you know, just a few cents. half a dollar, i guess. basically, generally jumping up $0.50. but that's every time you cross right? so that will be a factor for folks who commute into the city. there's a live look. let's take a look at the bay bridge for drivers with fast track folks it will mean a jump to 925 for drivers without fast track, it will jump to 1025. this latest hike is part of a larger effort, though, to ease a budget. there's a deficit of more than $200 million for this section, so we're going to. since 19 2019, the golden gate bridge district has been increasing tolls by $0.35 every year. then in march, leaders approved a series of new increases over the next five years. as one spokesman says, the money is critical. it's important to note that the golden gate bridge district is unique among transit agencies and that we don't receive any dedicated state or local tax

revenues, and so we rely primarily on bridge toll to keep up with the rising costs of providing our services and the services that our customers demand. now, the agency also says bridge traffic and transit ridership never actually fully recovered since the pandemic, especially during the commute hours. and that's what really counts, right? and so it amounts to nearly $1 million less in revenue each week, which is a big reason for the massive budget shortfall for golden gate transit commuters. those who take that system fares for most bus and ferry lines are increasing by $0.25. again, some folks who don't use these systems or the bridge itself go. that's only a few cents, but it's every day it's 25. every day we're talking about gas prices. we're happy when it goes down by 5 or $0.10. so this is a daily cost. not once, you know, once periodically when you fill up with gas. oh, and i've been here so long. i remember when it was $3 to cross and we could pay with cash. yeah, right. you would talk to the toll workers. that's right. now. yeah. you

around the corner. it is time for those annual reminders to leave the fireworks to the professionals. it's really important. nationwide, firefighters will respond to 10,000 fireworks, burns and blast injuries, mostly to your hands, arms and face. 75% of those injuries happen around the 4th of july. additionally, people using fireworks spark about 15,000 fires a year. we've already seen vegetation fires around the bay area, and with temperatures hovering around 100 degrees in some of our communities, it won't take much for fire danger to certainly take off. the fine fuels the grasses and the weeds. they dry out real quick. you can watch the hillsides go from green to brown over the course of a week, but they can dry out even if we have moisture in the morning. throughout the day, they'll dry out, especially with the warm weather. and if there's any kind of wind on them. the message from many bay area agencies is just leave those fireworks to

5:41 am
as he mentioned, the little spark could really spread very quickly under these conditions, especially in these areas that will be shaded in red. looking at that fire danger, the humidity is the big factor in that we are looking at some slightly higher humidity for today at least along the coastline. but for the inland areas, it's going to be dropping and even lower for tomorrow. we may see at times our relative humidity in the single digits and teens in parts of the north bay. so that is extremely dry air. that's going to be coming along with some high heat as you move away from the coastline. so we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. mike, you're still tracking that crash as you approach the bay bridge. yeah, yeah, here we are. but we're also tracking the sunrise. and as more light shed on this crash scene, things appear to have smoothed out. there's two chp cruisers now on scene at the berkeley curve, where the arrow is. you can't really see the whole scene because of that. overcrossing. but let's show you where that is on the map again, things were slowing approaching the toll plaza right here. it's right on the 580. i'm sorry, the

hands full with at least 15 cases of thefts and burglary. an alert neighbor tipped officers off about the spree about 630 yesterday morning. the caller said people were pulling on car door handles when police arrived. they saw the suspects go into a garage where they stole a gray lexus and sped away . officers say they decided not to chase them out of concern for public safety. investigators now say the thieves entered at least 15 different unlocked vehicles. oh my goodness, some of those cars had garage door openers inside, allowing access to several homes. some people who live there were surprised while others less so. crime is so high all over the state, all over the bay area that no one's really so isolated that you're not going to get to it. moraga we really think of it as a safe enclave out here in the bay area, but you have to follow common sense rules no matter where you are. well, police are now working to

competition in minneapolis. all right, all four, along with team usa newcomer hezly rivera, will appear on the today show this morning about their upcoming trip to paris as they look to bring home gold. you can watch that full interview at seven this morning right after today in the bay. that will be great because hoda kotb was actually there watching them all. oh, that's cool. it was great to hear the crowd. they were just like cheering everyone on. they were alive and suni lee's from. that's a hometown crowd for her. so yeah, that was really she was great. gia vang put a great social media post out there about what it meant to her and the hmong community. yeah, coming back from i know what the doctor said, she would never compete again earlier because of her liver. they are just so many powerhouses. all right, well, we're not going to be tumbling around in the grass for the next couple of days if you want to. i mean, somersault inside. okay yeah. i think we're going to be doing whatever we can to try to find some air conditioning, try to stay cool and stay hydrated
5:54 am
over these next few days, we are going to have several days on end of a heat wave ahead. that means our bay temperatures will be in the 80s and 90s and in the valleys it will be possibly over 110 degrees with temperatures that hot, a light wind, low humidity, we will have a very high fire danger, and we also may see impacts to our air quality, especially if we do see more fires going around the region. and this is a look at what we're facing. the excessive heat warning for basically any area that's not along the immediate coastline, even along the bay. we're going to have a heat advisory in effect as of now, we do have our cool temperatures, but it may not be this cool over the next few days. with our morning start in san francisco in the mid 50s, we're at 52 right now in san rafael, looking at our highs for this afternoon. napa headed for 95 degrees and as hot as 102 in vacaville. we're still in the mid 70s in san francisco, but even here it's going to start to
5:55 am
get really hot over the next few days. with mid 80s across the bay to oakland, 95 degrees and 111 degrees in concord. really extreme temperatures. but unfortunately it gets even hotter as we head toward wednesday. it's going to be over 110 degrees for fairfield, 110 for concord, 107 for livermore, and 103 in santa rosa. so we're going to have several days like that as we take a look at morgan hill. it's still hot into the weekend and possibly next week, so i don't see any cooler air, really cooler air coming our way for quite a while as we are celebrating the 4th of july. keep in mind that you want to make sure that whether you're barbecuing, having a party, lighting fireworks, or doing something like that watching a fireworks show, you want to make sure you are very careful and everyone around you is staying hydrated and taking breaks and going into the air conditioning if needed. but we are also going to be warm here in san francisco
