hi there, good morning. i'm frances rivera. we begin with breaking news in the southeastern caribbean where hurricane beryl is pummeling the region. it is now a category 5 storm, after making landfall in grenada's carriacou island. the powerful storm ripping doors, windows and roofs off of homes. at least one person has died and hundreds of buildings damaged or destroyed on neighboring st. vincent. and there could be more fatalities. the dangerous storm is barrelling toward jamaica where it's expected to bring life-threatening storm surges later this week. angie lassman is tracking all this for us. >> we indeed will be watching beryl for the next couple days as it continues to move northwest at a pretty good clip. 22 miles per hour. but it maintains the category 5 strength. it's sitting southeast of the island of the dominican republic. we're likely going to see weakening with the system. that doesn't really change the

4:04 am
d.c. good morning, brie. the hush money payments were made just before the 2016 election, so how could this impact the case? >> reporter: the new ruling limits what evidence can be used at trial. and some of the events from the hush money trial did take place after mr. trump took office back in 2017. there were personal checks that were signed during this time. and prosecutors also discussed a meeting then-president trump held with michael cohen at the white house. it is not clear if any of these actions would be protected by presidential immunity. the supreme court ruled that some actions closely related to the core duties of a president are off limits to prosecutors, but a president has no immunity from private, unofficial acts. this ruling adds significant obstacles to special counsel jack smith's federal election interference case against mr. trump. former president trump called the decision a big win for the constitution and democracy.
4:05 am
but president biden says this ruling sets a dangerous precedent. >> no one. no one is above the law. not even the president of the united states. today's supreme court decision on presidential immunity, that fundamentally changed for all, for all practical purposes. today's decision almost certainly means that there are virtually no limits on what a president can do. >> reporter: and, as for what happens next in the january 6 election interference case, the lower courts will need to hold hearings to determine which actions are immune and which ones are not. this process could take months, meaning it is highly unlikely that the case will go to trial before the november election. frances? >> brie jackson for us, thank you. there has been a dramatic drop in crossings at the southern border. a department of homeland security official tells nbc news
