concern over the coming days, especially with the added element of illegal fireworks. so already firefighters are looking into the possibility that illegal fireworks started one fire last night. today in the bay's bob redell is live in concord this morning, where another fire caused a scare. this morning bob, do we know how this fire started? battalion chief with con fire believes it's possible that this fire behind me was illegal fire works. you can see the two remaining crews there actually getting ready to leave the scene, which means the fire is out and it no longer poses a threat. but it started in the hill behind these fire trucks. you can't see it yet, but there is a small burn scar up there. this is the lime ridge open space. and again, the battalion chief believes the fire started in the middle of the hill and because it started there, he thinks it's possible again, it was illegal and illegal firework. but it's not confirmed . it's just based on his belief, based on his experience of years of fighting these kind of fires. fires start around 245 this

morning. you should be able to see a time lapse video on your screen of it progressing. it burned 6 to 7 acres, didn't come close to a neighborhood on north ridge drive, which is on the other side of the top of this hill. here, a beacon fire was able to stop and put out the fire. the bbc tells me a dozer line that that was dug before the fire season helped them a lot. that's a perfect illustration of why defensible space and planning is so important in putting these things out. last night, another fire in the hills above berkeley on grizzly peak. you can see in this video that took off very fast, but the firefighters were able to keep it just to two acres with their quick response. they again believe that that one was also started by illegal fireworks. so this morning cal fire urging residents to not set off fireworks themselves because firefighters know and as we've seen this morning and last night, they all know too well how those illegal fireworks could spark a fire in an

charged. our consumer team recently stood just feet away from an intense fire exercise that leveled a tiny home in mere minutes. it is one vivid reminder of just how quickly a wildfire can lead to devastation. but engineers say we can all take some simple steps right now to reduce our risk. consumer investigator chris chmura says the next few minutes could save your home. watching a tiny home burn down right next to one that didn't really opened our eyes before the first flames, we spoke with engineer anne cope. i'm the chief engineer for ives. ives is the institute for building and home safety, which studies fires and says these two homes look alike. but there are differences you can learn from and possibly fix yourself. let's start at the bottom. mulch and plants lined the first few inches of the house that burned down. even though this plant is beautiful, healthy, and green, it will absolutely ignite. she's right.
5:07 am
it did ignite during the fire. the tiny home that survived had plants too, but they were away from the walls, plus rocks and pavers circled the house, not mulch. we got this hardscaping at the big box store, for like $5 a foot moving on and then focused on the next five feet away from the house, namely the fence. a wood fence with shrubs connected to the house that burned. the house that survived had this metal fence instead of the wood fence. everything within these first five feet is noncombustible and also noted the siding, vulnerable wood on the left, tougher composite material on the right, also wide open, heat funneling eaves on the house that burned, but enclosed eaves on the house that survived. those are more expensive adjustments that might require a professional, but anne says they're worth it. we're talking about cutting your risk in half. if you make significant changes, only consult licensed

hazy look now in walnut creek and on these hot days, not only do we have the concern about the high heat, but also our air quality, and it is a spare. the air alert day. and when we get high pressure causing these intense heat waves, it pushes all of the pollutants back down to the surface and it makes it very unhealthy for people with any breathing problems or health conditions. and you do want to limit your time out there, especially in the east bay and santa clara valley, where that measure of ozone will be the highest. and we will see temperatures starting out in the mid 60s and upper 50s for san rafael and san francisco. but as we go throughout the day, it's going to heat up quickly. we'll go from 60s and 70s to some 80s and even upper 90s by noon as we go into the afternoon, it will be as hot as 110 degrees in fairfield at 3:00. this afternoon. so we'll talk more about that coming up. mike's been tracking where we can find some lower gas prices. yeah. trying to see the lower numbers since you've got the higher ones. do the best. we can. look,

three. we are under a microclimate weather alert as we brace for some extreme heat today in san jose. it will be in the low 70s at 8:00, but just two hours later we're already ten degrees hotter and continuing to see those temperatures heading for the upper 90s and near 100 degrees. there will be some spots well over 100. we'll talk more about that and when we may see some relief coming up in a few minutes. and we're looking at the headlights westbound. your commute looks just fine in dublin we are talking about a different traffic flow as there are many businesses with vacation this week, or at least coming up toward the holidays. so we'll show you how things

party to replace biden. meantime, a number of political experts interviewed on nbc and many other networks have suggested biden show the american voter he is ready to serve again by conducting a series of town halls and long form interviews and other unscripted, less controlled appearances, and suggest he absolutely quit his habit of going home to delaware in seclusion every weekend. but he's not doing that. president biden will have a public briefing today about the extreme weather, including the heat and the hurricane barrel. later this week, he'll take part in an independence day celebration, and then he's going to go to delaware for a long weekend. former president trump has asked the courts to delay his sentencing due next week, because of that major new decision from the supreme court that not only gives presidents some immunity from laws during their time in office, it prohibits prosecutors from asking questions about the crime's motives. trump's payoff

to an adult film actress took place long before he was president, but some of the evidence prosecutors gathered, like signed checks from the president to his lawyer to mask the payoff, were made while he was president. now, legal scholars are still thinking through the enormity of yesterday's announcement that there is one person, one office above the law. it was actually today, july 2nd, that the us continental congress voted to create its own united states independent of a king. in her scathing dissent yesterday, justice sotomayor wrote the relationship between the president and the people he serves has shifted irrevocably in every use of official power. the president is now a king above the law. now, most justices end their opinions. i dissent, sotomayor wrote, with fear for our democracy, i dissent. now, i want to show you

president biden's reaction last night. i'm going to run a fair amount of it because this is such a big change in the way america understands its relationship to power. this nation was founded on the principle that there are no kings in america. each each of us is equal before the law. no one, no one is above the law, not even the president of the united states. but today's supreme court decision on presidential immunity that fundamentally changed for all, for all practical purposes, today's decision almost certainly means that there are virtually no limits on what the president can do. this is a fundamentally new principle, and it's a dangerous precedent, because the power of the office will no longer be constrained by the law, even including the supreme court of the united states. the only limits will be self-imposed by the president alone. i concur with justice sotomayor's dissent today. she

here's what she said. she said in every use of official power, the president is now a king above the law with fear for our democracy. i dissent, end of quote. so should the american people dissent. i dissent. may god bless you all and may god help preserve our democracy. president biden will be at the dc city emergency operations center this morning for a briefing on the weather, including the incoming hurricane kris. thank you so much, scott. the warriors, meanwhile, are wasting no time trying to fill the hole left by the departure of a legend. klay thompson officially leaving the warriors after more than a decade. nbc sports bay area confirms he's signing a three year deal with the dallas mavericks. the warriors last night issued a statement thanking him for 13 incredible seasons. the warriors also indicate plans to retire his jersey number at some point.

already looks warm as we take a look at our live view in walnut creek this morning. getting started with the hazy sky. we are going to have to deal with some unhealthy air quality. it is a spare the air alert day, especially in the east bay and the santa clara valley. unhealthy for sensitive groups. anyone with any kind of health or heart condition should limit your time outside. today and dealing with this for not only today, but the next couple of days, as we are going to have some extreme heat and high levels of ozone. our temperatures are starting out in the mid 60s for dublin as well as san jose. it's 57, in san rafael and in san francisco, and one of our hotter spots like concord is going to quickly see those temperatures ramp up. there's not a lot of time in the morning to get in those walks or try to get in the yard, work or any outdoor activities before that heat turns dangerous, and we'll see that already at noon into the rest of the day, with a high of 111 degrees expected here today in fremont, san jose,

it will be 97, mountain view 95 and mid 80s for san mateo, look at the north bay just covered with triple digit heat and all of this red, which is a major heat risk. and how this could quickly impact your health and cause heat stroke or heat exhaustion. here's a look at tomorrow's high temperatures. when we start to see the purple, that's extreme heat risk. and we see that with those highs topping 113 degrees. taking a look at walnut creek, unfortunately there is not a lot of relief here. what we like to see, even for this time of year, is 80s in the forecast, and we don't get there until next wednesday, and it's very short lived. so we're stretching it out ten days to see when we could see some relief. and once again, there is not a lot of it. we're going to continue to struggle through this excessive heat through the weekend, and san francisco. we'll have the quick ramp up in temperatures into the upper 80s tomorrow, but then we'll come back to the lower 80s, which is still warm, but we'll see it come down to

the mid 70s early next week. and mike, you were saying there is a change now at the bay bridge. yeah. the metering lights were activated but there's no backup. so it's indicating again how light the traffic flow is, but also indicating that the folks who monitor the traffic volume on the east shore freeway do see a little more. and there's a little slowing there through richmond, some slowing. also 24 getting away. there may just be a crew there. there's no scheduled maintenance, but there are no incidents either. so we'll track that closely. a slower drive builds up for highway four, a bit, hanging on through concord out of pittsburgh and bay point, but no big deal. look at this. this is the big meter that we use for contra costa county. and it's only 23 minutes from a matt from marsh creek road down to 580. so out of contra costa county, still a smooth flow of traffic, most of that slowing just starts as you get to the tail end of that vasco road commute down toward 580. that's right about here, i'd say where there's a volume build, slight one into livermore. that crash hasn't proven to be a major issue as you come down for highway 84. so we're looking okay. getting in towards sunol, there is a new

crash north 101 right around where we typically see some slowing. we don't see the slowing. i'll check on that crash and get some more details. but the big note again is because of the levi's event. there will be some alterations to the vta and the ace shuttle. that's a big deal because that's coming earlier than you expect. so get get there early for the shuttle. if you take it in the evening back to you. thank you. so much mike. happening now. contra costa county opening permits for people interested in selling food from their own homes or from street stalls. this is offering an updated annual program aimed at helping people to start their own businesses, and it costs about $700 up front. but renewals costs about half of that. applicants are only allowed to sell up to 90 meals per week, and can gross no more than $100,000 per year. similar permits are available in alameda, san mateo, santa clara, solano counties, along with the city of berkeley. ahead of the 4th of july legal fireworks already being tied to at least two fires. and it comes as
