6:00 am
working to control a fire wildfire which has thousands of people fleeing from their homes. the conditions firefighters are facing is temperatures already begin to rise this morning. plus, in the dark with no way to cool down, we are tracking power outages causing big headaches ahead of another day of heat. i wanted to speak directly to the president about the need for him
6:01 am
to step aside. some of the first public calls for biden to withdraw from the election. but willie, we're live in washington with the message from the white house and new details on the meeting between the president and governor gavin newsom. this is today in the bay well, good morning. happy wednesday. happy hot wednesday. i'm scott mcgrew and i'm kris sanchez. marcus and laura are off. we want to get right to that breaking news that out of control wildfire roaring through butte county and the city of oroville. as of last night, more than 2000 acres were already burned and that fire only started just before noon. video shows homes and vehicles burned in at least one neighborhood, though the fire department hasn't yet stopped down to confirm that thousands of homes are under mandatory evacuation orders, some bay area firefighters are now arriving on the front lines. already we've seen trucks from hayward and fremont. our ginger conejero saab is following that story,
6:02 am
and we'll have a live report in our next half hour. before that, let's get to meteorologist kari hall. it's going to be a hot day. you had said it was already 90in places. first responders on the scene, all that dry brush. it's going to be really tough these next few days. that's the reason why we have to be careful. all of these fires are started by people and we don't have any lightning strikes or anything that would cause them to happen naturally. so once again, it's definitely our efforts that are going to keep us from having to deal with more fires. and here's a look at the incidents that we have now. we talked about the thompson fire farther to the north. we also have the toll fire that's happening just to the northeast of calistoga. and then in solano county, there's the denverton fire and the conditions that they're dealing with are really extreme, with very low humidity, hot temperatures and some gusty winds. so this is most likely going to continue to fan those flames. but hopefully they do get some more containment soon. and we are going to continue with the low humidity. those dry winds increasing our fire danger
6:03 am
as we go through the next few days, even through friday. that red flag warning continues. as far as the smoke, this shows near surface smoke. the lighter blue indicates where we have just a hazy sky, and it increases the amount of pollutants in the air. but where you see the reds and the darker colors, that's very unhealthy. smoke. a lot of that blowing away from us here in the bay area, but still will be a factor over the next few days as we try to celebrate the holiday. back to you all right. thank you. kari. so hundreds of people are waking up without power this morning because of outages caused by the heat wave today in the bay's bob redell is live in san ramon, in a neighborhood still without electricity. this morning. good morning bob. we understand this could keep happening because we have that triple digit heat. correct. in pg&e is attributing most of the power outages yesterday, and the ones that are still ongoing, if not all of them. most of them to the heat that we've been experiencing triple digit heat.
6:04 am
case in point right here behind me in san ramon, you can see, well, it doesn't even look like this driver realizes the lights are out. you're supposed to of course, when you have a traffic intersection where the lights are out, you treat it as a four way stop. but that person right there, completely oblivious to the fact that the lights around just ran and let's see if this person does it. okay, we're bollinger canyon and tavares drive. i've been noticing a number of people driving through this intersection, not aware of the fact that lights are out and you're supposed to treat it as a four way stop. so remember that if you encounter something like this, here's a live look at the pg&e power outage map on their website. still hundreds without power in the bay area of the green circles represent up to 50 customers without electricity. yellow diamonds up to 500. these outages don't just drive the residents nuts, they hurt small businesses. yesterday, the danville brewing company and the peasant and pear restaurant, also in danville. they had to close earlier than usual because they had no way to turn on the
6:05 am
lights or run their air conditioning or the appliances in their kitchens. the owner of the peasant and pear says just last year, his business experienced 22 power outages and in the one last night, and he ends up having to subtract from his bottom line, you lose several thousands of dollars of sales. but on a night like this, now you don't get any of that sales money and you're paying for labor. obviously, it's very frustrating for us for the customers, you know, is we want to be a place people can escape the heat, you know, have a nice cold beer, you know, some great food. pg&e says it's probable this week's heat wave will knock out power again. and again. is urging customers to conserve, put off those chores that use a lot of electricity until later in the day, early in the morning, before the demand for air conditioning really kicks in. and again, if you're in intersection has got no power, treat it as a four way stop. another truck just blasted through this intersection. very
6:06 am
dangerous reporting live here in san ramon, bob redell today in the bay. all right. thank you very much, bob. good reminder about the traffic. stoplights. all right, so the power outage is a great reminder to keep your devices charged and to get our free nbc bay area news app. even without power, you can get up to the minute updates without about weather alerts or breaking news sent straight to your phone. and it is free for all devices. 605 on your wednesday morning. turning now to decision 2024, governor gavin newsom is going to head to washington to meet with president biden as biden faces calls to withdraw from the election. following that performance in the first presidential debate, newsom will join other democratic governors at the white house. there's also a video feed for some governors. this is old video of the two coming face to face at sfo in november. biden's campaign, as you know, has two months until the democratic national convention in chicago today in the bay's brie jackson is in washington, brie the president,
6:07 am
his team working to try to ease these concerns. that's right. good morning. scott so damage control continues. the white house says it does want to get the president out there more. president biden and house democratic leader hakeem jeffries, they spoke by the phone on the phone yesterday. and tonight, president biden is scheduled to speak with democratic governors to try to shore up their support. growing calls for president biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. i wanted to speak directly to the president about the need for him to step aside. congressman lloyd doggett is the first sitting democrat in congress to publicly raise concerns, citing president biden's poor debate, performance and fears about the country's future. we need to have the strongest candidate possible in order to assure that the values that we hold for our democracy are not traded for an authoritarian strongman bent on
6:08 am
revenge against his opponents, white house officials are defending the 81 year old's mental fitness and accomplishment. this is a president who, over the last three and a half years, has demonstrated the right wisdom and the right judgment and the right character, vice president kamala harris is doubling down. joe biden is our nominee. we beat trump once and we're going to beat him again. if president biden does step aside, the vice president is seen as a strong replacement. congressman jim clyburn says he would support her, but wants to see biden push ahead. i want this ticket to continue to be biden. harris former president trump is also weighing in. well, they say he's not getting out and they say getting him out is very hard because he has the delegates. he has the votes, and that if he doesn't want to get out, there's not a thing they can do about it. president biden, looking to reassure democrats and the
6:09 am
public that he's capable of doing the job, and the white house chief of staff will hold a call with white house staff today. and we're told that it's aimed at sending the message to staff to weather the storm and keep their heads down. now, some staffers have indicated frustration that no one is telling them anything. scott all right. brie jackson in washington, thank you. well, we have breaking news this morning and a unique look at the strongest storms so far this season. take a look at your screen. hurricane hunters yesterday flew right into the eye of hurricane beryl. we'll tell you these are not amateurs. this group is actually part of the air force reserve at keesler air force base. the storm, meanwhile, is on the verge of a direct hit on jamaica. that is where people have been preparing for its arrival. fuel supplies are low. barrel is now at a category four strength, and already at least six deaths on other islands are being blamed on the storm. other islands
6:10 am
again have been hit very hard. the storm caused extensive damage to saint vincent and the grenadines. cell phone video shows damage to the government school and the early childhood center there. high winds just ripping that roof right off. and of course, on an island, nowhere to go. just take shelter. meteorologist kari path has been tracking this very carefully. yeah, and we have more islands that are in the path of beryl as we go into today. we're bracing for this to make a very glancing blow or a direct hit to jamaica today, as it continues to make its westward track across the caribbean and moving just south of cuba. but this has been a very intense storm. now a category four with winds at 145mph, it is moving fairly quickly at 20mph, so it is expected to move into and out of jamaica later today, continue farther off towards the west and move closer to the yucatan
6:11 am
peninsula over the next few days. that may also move right into cozumel and cancun before making its way on the other side and possibly entering the gulf of mexico. so we'll continue to watch that for today. looking outside, it's going to be another hot one as the fire danger remains along with the extreme temperatures, and we are also under a spare. the air alert, which continues today looking at our temperatures, headed for 104 in moraga. hayward will see a high of 96, about the same in san jose, mid 80s for san mateo, as well as san francisco and 100 in novato. 111 today in ukiah for our 4th of july, it's still going to be really hot out there with our high temperatures during the afternoons still in the 90s and over 100 degrees, while for the peninsula, it's going to be in the mid 80s and san francisco up to about 83 degrees. so this extreme heat continues as we talk about the weekend as well.
6:12 am
we'll take a look ahead in a few minutes. and mike's been trying to find us some lower gas prices. yeah, lower numbers for anything compared to what you're showing. we're looking over here. the best price though that we have san jose again at 395 again. this time we'll call out platinum gas on tully road. the low in concord is actually contra costa counties low at 404. diamond gas and mart and circle k on oak grove road and in marin county. the last number here. that's the best price you'll have is in san rafael, 409, the mobil on ritter street. you can get and you can give those price reports over here on gasbuddy.com on the roadway. not much to report except it's a light traffic volume. as we've been talking about. tuesday saw much more traffic. so today i think tuesday might have been the last early commute that we see this week. we're looking at a little bit of slowing very little on highway four and concord highway 37, a little getting out of vallejo as you narrow down toward mare island, the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights are active, but they're not really doing any
6:13 am
work either. so you know what? i guess that's kind of me today. mike, back to you guys. you deserve a break, right? but mike says if you're going somewhere, get started early. and if your family's late, shake the car keys, they will come. does that really work at your house? it did. a warning from netflix coming up, the streaming giant preparing to phase out one of its subscription plans. and of course, it's the cheap one. the impact it will have on your monthly rates, plus a proposed brand new city in the north bay just got even more extravagant. even before the shovels break ground, a first look at what may become its signature landmark and beating the heat will break down some of the top spots where you can cool off from the triple digit temperatures, keeping it here, you're watching today in the bay
6:14 am
flex alert! flex alert! a power outage is looming. that's just alert, he's always getting worked up about something. flex alerts notify us of preventable power outages. that way we always know when to help stop one. ok flex, just drop some knowledge on me again. oh, ok i will - i'll turn our thermostat to 78... i'll unplug the blender. the hair dryer. - my blankie? - yep! - let's talk about it! - nope. ooo, we can save the laundry til' the morning! oh, yes please! oh! little things like this help save our power and help save us from outages. with flex alerts, the power is ours.
6:15 am
6:16 am
our trend where it quickly heats up today, going from upper 70s at 8:00 to 107 degrees at 4:00 today, it's going to be dangerous to spend a lot of time outside, so be sure to stay hydrated and stay in the ac when you can. we'll talk about what's ahead coming up. i hope your car has ac, but there might not be a lot of time you spend there because the commute is looking pretty light right now. that's again for the early commute, but we'll talk about the timing throughout the rest of the week for your holiday travel as well.
6:17 am
coming up, wall street is set for a flat open following a positive day. s&p 500 closed above 5500 for the first time yesterday. nasdaq at a record high. markets getting a boost from tesla, which jumped 10% after reporting better than expected delivery numbers in focus today. data on the private sector, jobless claims and the minutes from last month's federal reserve meeting. so the markets closed early today ahead of the 4th of july holiday. apple set to get an observer role on open ai's board as part of an agreement announced last month, bloomberg reports. phil schiller, who runs apple's app store, has been chosen for the position. apple and open ai have declined comment. the move follows apple's announcement it would offer chatgpt on the iphone, ipad and mac as part of a suite of ai features. netflix will start phasing out the cheapest ad free plan for
6:18 am
existing subscribers. this, according to the verge, who says some customers on the basic plan, which costs about 12 bucks a month, are being asked to choose a new tier. the choices are the $6.99 ad supported plan, 1549 ad free, or 2299 ad free. premium most users receiving notice appear to be in the uk and canada. last year, netflix discontinued the basic plan for new or returning members in the us. i was going to say, didn't we already do that? new at six, a group behind the effort to build a new city from scratch in solano county is already expanding its design plans and footprint. that is, before the proposal officially makes it onto the november ballot. california forever, as they're calling it now, plans to construct what it calls the solano lagoon renderings you see here. it will feature a beach, water sports and entertainment park. in a unanimous vote last week, county supervisors requested a full impact report
6:19 am
within 30 days before approving that ballot measure. as we have been mentioning all week long, today is supposed to be a scorcher. all around the bay area. so if you are looking for a way to beat the heat in san francisco, san francisco is looking to help the parks and the rec and park department is opening all nine of its public pools to the public for free today. all pools open up at 7:00 this morning. list here on your screen so that you can find the one closest to you balboa, kaufman, garfield, hamilton, martin luther king junior mission community pool, beach, rossi and sava pools will all be opening in about 40 minutes. so wear your sunscreen, wear your sunscreen. also today, artists on the peninsula will create a world of temporary masterpieces. this is part of redwood city's 10th annual chock full of fun festival, happens today and tomorrow at courthouse square on broadway. it's free. artists
6:20 am
reserve a spot to create chalk street paintings in. the supplies are provided. right now. all the spots are filled for today, but there are a couple open spots for tomorrow. you can sign up on the redwood city's parks website. i mean, how talented are you that you can do something in chalk and be okay with? i love it when it looks like like there's a hole or something. it's so cool. yeah that's right fool. the i 3d chalk art. but you know, like, the pavement is so hot, i just don't know how they're going to do that. yeah. i mean, the good thing is that chalk doesn't melt. so yeah, the artists do. yeah. yeah. that's true. anyone out there trying to enjoy it. and we're also saying be mindful of taking your pets out for a walk today on that hot pavement. try to avoid that if you can. avoid the hottest hours of the day and find some grass. we're also dealing with some unhealthy air quality due to wildfire smoke and high levels of ozone. what happens on these hot days when we get high pressure? it pushes all the pollutants back down to the surface as that high pressure creates that sinking
6:21 am
air and it doesn't allow for all of this stuff that we have here to mix out. so it's unhealthy for sensitive groups. that means people with breathing problems or heart conditions, you should limit your time outside, but it's really not all that healthy anywhere in the bay area. so we're just trying to prevent any new fires from sparking. make sure you have defensible space around your home to prevent it from spreading. if it does, get close to your property, but just don't do any fireworks and that's going to help out quite a bit. don't drive on any dry grass. secure those tow chains that may create some sparks. and if you are grilling for the fourth, only do it on paved surfaces. be very careful with those coals. we're looking at temperatures starting out in the mid 50s for san rafael, but it's not as cool elsewhere. look at san jose. we're at 71 degrees to get started in martinez. we're also quite warm for the start of our day at 9:00. it's already 82 degrees. if you have some outdoor activities to try to get
6:22 am
done, you basically have until about 9 to 10:00 before it gets dangerous to be outside. our temperatures here will reach into the triple digits, reaching the peak at 2:00, and then gradually going back down. as we approach sunset this evening, we're going to see a high of 93 in oakland today and 96 in san jose. the problem with this heat for a lot of spots is we don't have a central air conditioning, so it's going to be a struggle to try to stay cool today and tomorrow for the 4th of july. maybe you have some people in town. you're going to be spending a little bit more time outside. just try to stay hydrated and that heat extends into friday as well as the weekend. really not much relief here in sight through the next seven days. and our overnight temperatures will be key to trying to recover from the high heat. will be in the mid 60s and a lot of spots. while san francisco will be in the upper 80s today. but then we're still looking at 80s throughout the rest of the week at least here we are starting out with some cooler temperatures with some
6:23 am
mid 50s. and mike, you have a little wait there at the bay bridge. yeah, just formed over the last seven minutes over here at the toll plaza. the metering lights have been on for, oh, since 540 this morning. so this is a very gradual build a light build over at richmond. so typical pattern. and again indicating that there's a lighter volume of traffic out there as we expect for the early commute. things will really start building up later on in the day. we'll talk about the timing coming up, but i do want to report that we've seen a lot of smaller brush fires reported alongside the roadway. this one over along 101. again, they quickly get put out and addressed. but as carrie's been talking about those conditions out there and as you saw from the number of reports out there, big concerns. so watch out for that mild build for vasco road, just 20 minutes drive out of contra costa county to 580. back to you. all right, mike, thanks. next on today in the bay nbc bay area responds. they fork over more than 30 grand for a used car, but it isn't as advertised. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura, nbc bay area responds next couple
6:24 am
6:25 am
6:26 am
contacted consumer investigator chris kamara's team. maja and andrew franklin told us they paid the online car dealer carvana, 32 grand for a used 2019 volvo xc60. they said carvana advertised the suv with adaptive cruise control right
6:27 am
here in the listing, but the franklin said the car carvana delivered did not have adaptive cruise control. so four days after delivery, the franklins contacted carvana for help with an exchange. but they say carvana told them they had to keep the car. so they contacted us. we contacted carvana. it responded immediately. it took back the franklin's volvo and let them choose a new car, a subaru with adaptive cruise control. that's a $32,000 win for them. in a statement, carvana said, we strive for 100% accuracy when listing vehicle features, but we always want to do right by our customers when we make a mistake. fun fact california law gives used car buyers like you the option to buy a two day window to cancel your car. buying contract. it's part of the used car buyers bill of rights. fair warning there are two fees. first, a fee to buy the cancellation option and second, a restocking fee. if you return the car. state law limits how much car dealers can charge
6:28 am
you. usually it's a couple hundred bucks to buy yourself a 48 hours to change your mind. we hear from car buyers often. you can join them. scan the qr code on screen right now to fill out our consumer complaint form online. and i've stepped into the newsroom to follow what's coming up at 630. and that includes the bay area heat wave, which is showing no signs of letting up. meteorologist kari hall is tracking just how hot we're going to get today. i'm ginger conejero saab in san francisco. fire crews from across the bay area have headed north to butte county to fight to the thompson fire on the fire lines. we'll give you the latest numbers on the thompson fire and the destruction it's already left behind. plus avoiding the holiday traffic jam, we are breaking down exactly when you need to go. whether you're hitting the road or hoping to hit the skies. stay with us. we're back in just a few
6:29 am
6:30 am
hold on... this trip got me alaska gold 75k status?? looks like i leveled up somewhere between san francisco and new york. i knew you earned miles faster than other airlines but like...okay, this is next level. i wonder if they'll take my photo. and put it in every seatback.
6:31 am
on every airplane. i really hope fame doesn't change me. moving wildfire tears through butte county. the new help firefighters are receiving from teams here in the bay area. plus, this should be the hottest day in a long heat wave. we are tracking record breaking conditions and there are last minute changes for the 4th of july. major reversals when it comes to fireworks in two cities. this is today in the bay
6:32 am
well, good morning to you. happy wednesday i'm scott mcgrew and i'm kris sanchez. marcus and laura have the morning off. we want to get right to meteorologist kari hall because we are already feeling this warm up. and it is still so early. it is early, and we're dealing with multiple fires across the region. so we're tracking all of these conditions as we enter into one of the hottest days. we'll see in this streak of some very extreme temperatures. here's a map of all the current fires, and one of them burning far farther to the north in butte county. the thompson fire is putting up a lot of smoke, but we also have some closer to the bay area that will have an impact on our air quality and the toll fire that we are seeing just northeast of calistoga is dealing with conditions, as the crews there are dealing with conditions that start out at 90 degrees, some gusty winds and low humidity. but this red flag warning continues into friday, especially for the north bay east bay hills and santa cruz
6:33 am
mountains. the reason why we're seeing this is because of the very low humidity, the dry grass, as well as those breezy winds. but as far as our air quality for today, it's going to be hazy. but much of the thicker plumes of smoke is blowing away from the bay area including that big fire up in butte county that thompson fire. but we are still looking at some hazy skies and hot temperatures for the afternoon. as hot as 111 today in ukiah and 107 in livermore. so we'll get a look ahead to our 4th of july holiday. that's coming up in a few minutes. thank you. kerry, i've got some numbers out of butte county that thompson fire looks like about 3000 acres are burning. wow. bay area crews are already headed to the front lines to help. ginger conejero saab is joining us from san francisco. and ginger, those crews are dealing with those scorching temperatures already. very tough conditions there. chris and scott. and that's why
6:34 am
we know that the fire crews are attacking the thompson fire from the air and from the ground. we know governor newsom has announced fema support to help suppress the thompson fire. we do know that the flames have reached at least one neighborhood. we're learning this morning that at least five homes have been destroyed by this fire, possibly many other structures, other structures as well. i want to show you some new video that we received overnight. you can see the destruction from the thompson fire now clear with the light of day. a home there is completely destroyed. and what remains of it this morning, a chimney and other hot spots that are burning still on the ground, despite crews continuing to battle these flames. we do know, as scott mentioned, that the fire grew from 2000 acres to now over 3000 acres. now here's a look at those flames that have been spreading fast. this is video from yesterday, around the time when the fire erupted in oroville. that happened just
6:35 am
before 11 yesterday morning. thousands of people are under evacuation orders and crews are focused on protecting homes and structures in the surrounding areas. now, fire departments from across the bay area headed up to the fire lines to help san francisco fire. posting a video on social media saying 18 of their firefighters left for butte county crews from san jose, milpitas and san mateo are also in the fire zone. the fuels are very dense. the brush is dry and as you can see, any wind will move a fire out very quickly. we have resources coming in from out of butte county, including 3434 strike teams of engines. meanwhile, crews have also been working on the toll fire in calistoga that is much smaller at about 40 acres. but it is only 15% contained. an evacuation warning remains in effect now. there are
6:36 am
no structures destroyed. cal fire keeping dozens of firefighters on the perimeter of that fire just in case. no word yet on the cause. now, as far as the thompson fire in butte county, there are evacuation centers that are set up. one at the nazarene church in oroville and another in butte county fairgrounds over in gridley. we'll continue to watch this fire and bring you the latest, both on air and online at nbcbayarea.com. scott and chris. all right, ginger thank you. new at six one north bay city is now reversing its safe and sane fireworks policy ahead of the 4th of july. cloverdale now officially banning all sales and use of fireworks. until yesterday, it was one of the few cities allowing those safe and sane fireworks. leaders are citing this year's increased fire risk and tomorrow night's fireworks show at cloverdale high school is still on it is possible, though it might be modified or canceled depending on the conditions. also, news
6:37 am
saint helena leaders are now canceling their fireworks portion of their 4th of july event, citing that higher fire risk. the celebration will still go on at crane park, with music, inflatables, children's activities and a bike parade. all of that starts at six tomorrow night, and from parades to fireworks shows, we are compiling a safe way for you to celebrate the 4th of july all across the bay area. you can click that qr code on your screen with your phone, or you can go to nbcbayarea.com. you can find the information in our trending bar. 636 a live look at the white house. that's where gavin newsom tonight will join other democratic governors in a meeting with president biden, a biden campaign spokesperson says newsom wants to be seen in person showing his support by standing alongside the president. some of this will be broadcast on video. the face to face meeting comes as a number of democrats are calling for biden to withdraw from the race, though certainly not newsom.
6:38 am
this, after his dreadful performance during last week's debate as those calls grow louder, they now include at least one democratic congressman, and the white house is defending biden's record and mental fitness. we need to have the strongest candidate possible in order to assure that the values that we hold for our democracy are not traded for an authoritarian strongman bent on revenge against his opponents. this is a president who, over the last three and a half years, has demonstrated the right wisdom and the right judgment and the right character. the white house chief of staff will hold a call with staff members today aimed at encouraging them to weather the storm and keep their heads down. some staffers, meanwhile, growing frustrated about being left out of the loop. all right, let's take a live look at sfo and the bay bridge this morning. today is supposed to be the busiest day to travel this holiday week. and if for the first time in a long time, people are leaving even
6:39 am
earlier to get to their holiday destinations, according to aa mike inouye, breaking it down. how many people are expected to be out there? mike? it's going to get busier by the minute. i know i'm headed to the airport a little later. there you go. well, i'll add one more to the count then. yeah, you know what we expect to see? packed roads, crowded airports. the rest of this week as more than 71 million people are projected to travel for the july 4th holiday, according to triple a this year, triple a analyzed the entire july fourth week, starting with the saturday before. this week and through the sunday after the holiday. the nine day period gave more insight into travel trends for 2024, because many people are working remotely since the pandemic, they can get to their destinations earlier. they may be there already, but triple a found the amount of people traveling for this fourth. in total, it's up 5% from last year and up 8% from 2019. we're finding that post-pandemic, people are traveling differently. more people have remote work flexibility now, so what people
6:40 am
are doing, many people, they're leaving the weekend before they're working remotely from their destination. a couple of days, and then they're taking a vacation and then coming back. so nice. if you can swing it, if you're flying for the fourth to beat the crowds, triple a advises you to leave as early as possible and give yourself three hours at the airport before your boarding time. and if you're hitting the roads today or for the rest of the week, here's what you need to know. the best time to leave today or tomorrow that would be the fourth is before noon. the worst time to leave if you're traveling by car is the afternoon from 2 p.m. till about 7 p.m. that's the where the bulk of the traffic is coming back home on friday or through the weekend. the best time to leave there would be before 10 a.m. of course, you'll probably get back to the bay area, along with a bunch of other people. the worst times, as usual, are mid-morning and into the afternoon. the midday is when we see a lot of crosstown traffic, and a lot of folks probably try to take a leisurely departure after breakfast, and that will blend in with midday traffic. now we're going to check in with

kari because while i've been tracking bigger travel numbers than we've seen in a while, kari you're tracking temperatures and they're going to continue, i think, for a while. right yeah, it's going to be hot. and we're starting out at least with some milder temperatures this morning as we are resetting for the day now at 54 degrees in san rafael, it is a little warm in dublin at 67 degrees 62. in san francisco and 71 in san jose. warmer start there. it is going to be another scorcher. take a look at santa clara. we're at 71 right now and look at the trend 83 at 9:00 and at noon. we're already at 97 degrees and at 101 at 1:00 this afternoon. so we'll have several hours with temperatures in the triple digits here. and dublin will hit a high of 105. a lot of these temperatures close to a record high temperature for a day in napa, up to 105. santa rosa 103. and not any better for tomorrow. still dangerously hot for the middle of the day with
6:42 am
dublin reaching 100 degrees 105 in concord and fairfield. although today is the peak of the heat, the major to extreme heat risk and how this could impact your health continues into the 4th of july holiday as well as friday. so we'll talk more about other concerns we have with this kind of weather. that's coming up in a few minutes. all right. kari, thanks. well, scientists are hard at work trying to figure out what attracts sharks. glad that's not my job. ahead on today in the bay. an inside look at one new study that's trying to find out if sharks literally hear the difference between humans and ocean prey. plus, with the olympics right around the corner, why are all eyes on the river in paris? we'll explain. and the heat arriving just in time for the marin county fair. we are breaking down all the summer fun and the signature east bay r&b band set to perform today. also, there's fun with water that's going to be important today. keep it hot dogs and corn dogs those hot

until the start of the paris olympic games. and authorities are already keeping a very close eye on the river. send. that is where the opening ceremony will happen, along with open water athletic events. but french president emmanuel macron, already floating the idea of scrapping the river ceremony for a possible backup plan, french police say. meanwhile, they have years of training in areas of swimming and diving, so they feel fully prepared to provide whatever security is needed. and don't forget the opening ceremony for the 2024 olympic games will happen on friday, july 26th. nbc bay area will bring you exclusive coverage throughout the paris olympic games. all right, happening today. the official weigh in for tomorrow's nathan's famous hot dog eating contest in new york. we expect to see nine time women's champ miki sudo there, but world record holder san jose native joey chestnut will not be there. he is not allowed to compete this year. he signed a deal with a rival hot dog brand

instead. chestnut will go to el paso to head to go head to head with soldiers at fort bliss, where they're having their own hot dog eating contest. well closer to home, the imminent arrival of the july 4th holiday means the return of the marin county fair. all right, so when it starts today, it will kick off the first part of a three year plan aimed at inclusivity for people with disabilities. for the first time, it will include a lounge specifically for people with disabilities who need a break from the crowds or the noise. the room is also equipped with noise canceling headphones, snacks and volunteers. we talked with an organizer about what makes the marin fair stand out. we have a huge emphasis on the arts and a real connection to our community. our county fair. and if you grew up going to this, you'll know this. it's the kind of fair where you can actually drop your ten year old child off during the day, and they will be safe and have a fantastic time,
6:49 am
and you can pick them up at the end of the day. i mean, you could. that's up to you. the fair's theme this year is make a splash. water will be, thankfully, one of the main elements of many of the exhibits. this year. and they have live music as well, and they've got you covered there in vogue india and ziggy marley, los lonely boys all scheduled to perform. there's a special splash park music fest tomorrow for the fourth, and this all runs through sunday and it opens at 11, closes at 11 p.m. that is fun. i'm glad that there are water features there. yeah. oh, it's going to be hot. yeah yeah, it's going to be hot. and we're just trying to enjoy our holiday. but dealing with this excessive heat and also being mindful of the fire danger that we'll have as well. i know this is going to be one of the popular spots as we take a look at ocean beach this morning. it's just gorgeous. and we're seeing those waves coming in. and you do want to also just think about this. it's dangerous
6:50 am
there at ocean beach as far as the waves and the risk of rip currents. but i think a lot of people are going to be going there to cool off for this afternoon. we also will have unhealthy air quality. it's a spare the air alert day due to wildfire smoke, as well as high levels of ozone, the most unhealthy air quality, that highest measure of particulate matter is in the east bay today, and it will be unhealthy for sensitive groups. here's a look at the way we're starting out. our morning. anywhere from 55 and half moon bay. it's 62, in san mateo and in palo alto, but it is 78 degrees in martinez. and there are some spots that really didn't cool off that much overnight. and as we are heading into the next few days with this extreme fire danger, we want to make sure that you already have that defensible space around the home and no fireworks. leave it up to the pros. we've said that many times because it will be a little bit too dangerous to even have any sparks anywhere close to some dry grass, and you don't want to drive on it either.
6:51 am
securing any tow chains that may create some sparks and grilling only on paved surfaces for the next several days, and most likely beyond the high temperatures that we are going to see in a lot of spots will be very close to either matching or just just below the record high. like livermore, we're expecting a high of 107. today's record is 109 degrees, and we're going to see the high of 96 in san jose today, 110 in concord, vacaville also 110 degrees. and for the 4th of july it is only looking like a minor cool down here. i mean, just a few degrees. so it's still going to be very hot and a high of 102 in los gatos and novato, 96 degrees and 105 in clear lake for tomorrow, while concord will continue to see highs over 100 degrees through saturday. there's not much relief here. with some low 90s into the beginning of next week. our 7-day forecast shows
6:52 am
the continued heat, and another thing we look at is the overnight temperatures with lows in the mid 60s that may not provide much cooling to your home. and so we're going to have these hot days in the valleys and then also these mild nights while san francisco is going to be very warm today, it does look slightly better for the weekend. mike, you were looking at some changes at the bay bridge slightly better here at the bay bridge. we might have seen the big bursts for the early commute. things will ease off. maybe another hour or two. then they'll start to build again. but again, here's what it is right now with the metering lights that continue to be on easy, drive across the span a little more build over at the richmond bridge, getting over to the north bay a little more popular through the north bay. no major issues. highway four. good. we had some sudden slowing through walnut creek southbound 680. so i did time things out and it was looking a little tougher down that route. but this should start to be improving as those speed sensors do improve anywhere south of walnut creek. we're looking good. back to you. thank you mike. happening now, customers
