he's made his way to kingston, jamaica, where hurricane beryl could soon make a direct hit. sam, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. the reality is that in a matter of hours, the landscape here in jamaica could be turned upside down from a deadly hurricane that already claimed seven lives. certainly accustomed to hurricane season, but beryl is a historic storm, the strongest storm ever recorded in june or july. this morning hurricane beryl tearing through the caribbean, bringing dangerous waves and ferocious winds. flooding buildings, smashing boats to pieces. hurricane beryl made landfall at a category 4 hurricane, leaving almost no one or nothing on the island untouched by its destructive force. >> reporter: one person couple stranded on their honeymoon. >> the resort told us to eat dinner and say in our room and

do not leave. >> reporter: residents clearing their iconic beaches. some business owners buckling down, but staying put. >> they're not leaving the low-lying areas? >> they're not going to leave. none of us. we will stand and ride it out. >> reporter: others feeling emboldened by how the buildings have withstood previous storms. >> a lot of buildings here are built to withstand the hurricane. >> reporter: still, the head of the police force bracing members for the reality ahead. >> i urge you make proper provisions at home, for your loved ones. >> reporter: the violent system arriving as more than 500 million americans brace for what could be a record holiday heat wave. and high humidity boosting heat indexes to life-threatening levels in cities like memphis and new orleans. back here in jamaica, the prime minister declared the entire

island a disaster area. he implemented a curfew from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and gave the green light to evacuate low lying areas. as of early last night, there were no evacuations underway. craig, back to you. >> sam, be safe, buddy. thank you. let's bring in dylan who is in for al. what can you tell us about this hurricane? >> this is a powerful storm. the sea temperatures are what we typically see in august. that's why this storm is saying so strong. a category 4 hurricane at this time. through late morning, early afternoon, conditions will rapidly deteriorate around jamaica where naturally we have hurricane warnings in effect. it should still be a category 4 storm as it passes to the south of jamaica. maybe not a direct hit, but the northern side of the storm is the strongest part of the storm. we could see 12 inches of rain. we could see damaging, gusty winds. we could see a deadly storm surge up to 6 to 9 feet. then the storm will weaken. as we go into early next week,

we'll keep an eye on southern texas to see if it will bring a lot of rain to the corpus christi area. the other major threat we have is this heat. it is not just the heat. it is the humidity down south. the humidity prevents your body from naturally cooling down. in this part of the country, down through texas into louisiana with that intense tropical moisture, it will feel like it's up 15 degrees, monroe, little rock will feel like 112. you go out west, and, yes, you don't have the humidity but then the dehydration is a huge risk. areas like fresno, into sacramento. this is wednesday, thursday, friday. we will keep the temperatures well up into the triple digits. highs 20 degrees above average. vegas is 118 by monday. >> my goodness. dylan, thank you. we turn to politics now and the mounting pressure on president biden as more democrats voice concerns about that shaky debate performance

last week. meanwhile, a new york court has given an update on former president trump's hush money trial sentencing. there is a lot to break down this morning. we have it all covered for you. we will start with gabe gutierrez. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. the white house chief of staff will hold an all-staff call today as the president also reaches out to reassure lawmakers and governors what democrats have been saying privacy for days is now spilling into public view. now the president is offering a new explanation for his debate performance. off camera at a virginia fundraiser, president biden apologizing for that disastrous debate, saying he wasn't very smart for traveling around the world a couple times before that showdown with former president trump. and he quipped that he almost fell asleep on stage, adding, it is not an excuse but an explanation.

u.s. from back-to-back trips to europe 12 days before the debate. meanwhile, this morning a political dam may be breaking. one of the president's most important allies, former house speaker nancy pelosi acknowledging concerns about the president's debate performance. >> i think it's a legitimate question to say, is this an episode or is this a condition? and, so, when people ask that question, it's legitimate on both candidates. >> reporter: adding that both he and former president donald trump should take cognitive tests. pelosi is supporting president biden, but congressman lloyd doggett of texas is officially calling for the president to leave the race. >> let's call on him to give the ultimate sacrifice of saying he will step aside because that's the best way to save our country. >> reporter: as more democrats question whether he should step aside. >> raised questions about his physical condition. >> i don't think he will have a leg to stand on for very long. >> reporter: reporting overnight that former president barack

obama expressed concerns privately telling allies that his former vp's path to the presidency has grown more challenging according to people familiar with the conversation, but that obama has offered support to biden. "the new york times" reports that in closed door meetings, several current and former officials noticed the president increasingly appear confused or listless or would lose the thread of conversations. >> i've got to say that doesn't know anything like the president i know. when ideal with him, he's sharp. he's asking tough questions. >> reporter: as some democrats look for a way forward. a new cnn poll suggest vice president kamala harris may do slightly better in a matchup with trump than biden. harris yesterday reaffirming her support. >> joe biden is our nominee. we beat trump once and we're going to beat him again, period. >> reporter: since the debate, the president has not taken questions from reporters, while delivering mostly scripted

remarks from a teleprompter. but the white house is announcing a flurry of events in the coming days, travel to wisconsin and pennsylvania as well as an interview. and he is expected to hold a press conference during next week's nato conference here in d.c. >> gabe, thank you. let's bring in kristin welker now, moderator of "meet the press," for a little bit more analysis now. chris, you have the congressman down in texas voicing concerns. former speaker nancy pelosi also acknowledging these questions about the debate performance are legitimate. it seems as if democrats were whispering in the days after. now they're saying these out loud. they're going on television. how concerned is this white house that this is not something that's going to go away? >> there are deep concerns, craig. this is an unprecedented moment with the president frankly facing more pressure by the day. democrats have defended president biden about his age, but things changed since the debate. there has been a wave of panic within the party based on my

conversations. and it is significant those cracks are starting to emerge that you just saw gabe map out. here is what i'm looking for, craig, what happens to polling in the coming days and weeks? do more lawmakers start to air their concerns publicly? if a top democrat starts to come out and call for the president to drop out of the race, that's a game changer. that's when the flood gates really open. at least one poll shows concerns about the president's health. and the cnn poll also really fascinating showing vice president harris doing better against trump compared to biden. so if more polls show a similar trend for the president, donors and elected officials' concerns could snowball. that could threaten democrats in down ballot races in addition to the presidency. that's when i think you will see

the pressure really mount. >> you mentioned some phone calls the president plans to make to party leaders, this news conference he's planning for next week, maybe sitting down for an interview as well. beyond that, kristin, what else can the white house do? what else should the white house be doing to try and ease some of these concerns? >> they've got to be out front on all of this. it is hard to overstate the level of the crisis that they're dealing with, given the pressure from their own party. i have been talking to officials within the campaign. they are defiant, craig. they are prepared to keep fighting. they raised $38 million since that debate. you will see today that all staff meeting at the white house, the president himself will be addressing governors, addressing their concerns all

across the country. the campaign plans to make him more visible, as you said. look for this, craig. look for them to focus on that immunity decision in the supreme court, which essentially expanded presidential powers to make their case, to make the president's case that former president trump would be more dangerous in a second term, that he's been emboldened by this decision. will this strategy be enough? polls show the top issue for voters still the economy. this is just a pivotal moment that we are watching, craig. >> indeed. kristin welker, thank you. as kristin just eluded to, just a day after the supreme court landmarks presidential immunity decision, the judge overseeing president trump's hush money trial in new york has postponed his sentencing for next week, and it's now scheduled for mid-september, less than two months before the presidential election. nbc news senior legal correspondent laura jarett joins us now. how might trump's lawyers use the supreme court decision in this case?

so the judge in new york didn't really have a choice. remember what the supreme court said on monday, any unofficial act, so things purely private, had nothing to do with being president, the prosecutor can go after those. what they cannot do is use evidence of things that happened in the white house, so-called official acts to prosecute something unofficial. perhaps conversations that trump might have had with hope hicks in the white house, in the oval. if he's president, even in this case, that's where the defense is making inroads. i'm not saying that will be a winning argument, but that's what the judge has to tease at. to do that will take some time. that's why he had to push the sentencing. >> what do we know about how the supreme court's decision is going to affect the classified documents case in florida, the election interference case? >> he will leverage this in any way he can. i think the florida case is

perhaps the one most right for that. it's bogged down, on hold for some reason. the florida case doesn't have a trial date, but the judge has a pending question on that immunity question and now it will be bolstered by the supreme court's decision. watch for that as well. >> okay. well, now to the busy fourth of july week. if you are hitting the road ahead of the holiday, be prepared for long lines. airports and airlines say we are in the middle of a record-breaking week of passenger levels. tom costello is at reagan national. tom, you spent a week going behind the scenes with the tsa and airlines. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. listen, we are expecting 33 million people to go through tsa check points over the extended 11-day july fourth holiday stretch. we're talking 2.7 million today, 3 million on sunday, really continuing this trend we have seen all year of breaking travel records week after week in some cases.

so if you are traveling starting today or tomorrow, you will not be alone. wednesday morning and america is on the move. 60 million on the nation's highways, 5.7 million on airport runways through sunday. the airlines have spent months preparing for this. >> it's pretty busy. >> reporter: yes, it is. perhaps the heaviest travel week of all summer. >> you are now boarding group two. >> reporter: virtually every airline is dealing with record numbers. united alone 520,000 passengers, 4400 flights a day. >> we're trying to pack everything in. >> reporter: and every airline is watching the skies. what's the biggest variable that can throw a monkey wrench into it, the weather? >> absolutely. nobody likes to be delayed. but weather does happen. >> reporter: so united is now sending a weather map imbedded in text messages to show passengers why weather is

disrupting their travel plans. using real humans, not just computers, to compose real human messages. >> hopefully that gives you more assurance that you know we have your back. >> good boy! >> reporter: for the tsa, the daily challenge is intercepting potential explosives and lots of guns. >> the first thing that came to my attention was there were bullets inside of a square like item. >> reporter: while we were there, officers found this fold-up gun inside a carry-on. and a.38 caliber handgun inside a congresswoman's airport at dulles airport. her representatives say she carried an empty handgun in her suitcase with no magazine or bullets. it happens every day at airports nationwide. 93% of them loaded.

no explanation for her disappearance. no one just vanishes have a luxury retreat. now her frustrated loved ones are demanding for action. >> i need them on the island to act like it's their child that's missing. >> reporter: an american mom whose adult daughter disappeared from the bahamas is sounding alarms and sharing photos of the tent where she says the 41-year-old was staying, showing her bed and bible. the chicago youth program director vanished two weeks ago from the yoga retreat on paradise island. her family and friends traveling to the compound last week, now pleading with american authorities, including the fbi, to get involved. the state of investigation in the bahamas right now, how would you characterize it? >> nonexistence. >> reporter: alleging the police mishandled the investigation, leaving that tent, a potential crime scene, open to the public,

and never distributing missing person's posters. they added they initially alerted some guests but not all that a woman had disappeared and asked her family not to approach guests explaining -- >> they were on vacation and they wanted to respect their privacy. >> reporter: the family fearing casey may have been targeted with the u.s. in january issuing a level two travel advisories in the bahamas. meanwhile, the police there say their investigation has been thorough. >> we used our joint technology. we used our k-9. we have used our divers. >> reporter: authorities in the bahamas telling nbc news investigators found casey's phone in the ocean but that her passport is still missing. the yoga retreat saying we met with the family along with the police and u.s. embassy representatives on two occasions, adding they're providing guests with regular updates about the disappearance

and guests were encouraged to speak freely when casey's family visited. that family growing more desperate by the day. what do you think happened to your daughter? >> i have no idea. that's what i'm trying to find out. please, please, people, help me find my child. >> maggie, the family says they're afraid casey was targeted. do they or the police have any theories? >> reporter: yeah. so the police haven't released any theories publicly. the family believes casey is alive, but they fear she may have been abducted. some guests actually mentioned men who didn't seem like they were staying at the resort, but they were walking through it, they say, the week of casey's disappearance. one man, for instance, had a walkie-talkie standing near her tent. another told a guest he was actually from chicago, of all places. we reached out to the police. we haven't heard back. meanwhile, guys, the family is

oh, we are back now at 7:39 with a live look at the traffic that's headed to newark airport. and more on a topic now that's on a lot of minds this morning, 4th of july travel. with the air travel up more than 5% this year, airports are preparing for more record crowds this holiday weekend. and tsa is expected to screen some 32 million people at their check points throughout the holiday, which stretches more than a week this year. so we decided we should check in with the man in charge of those security lines. david is the tsa administrator. thanks for the time, sir. >> good morning. >> 2.7 million go through those check points today. 3 million on sunday. millions over the next few days. are you staffed up at this point? are you prepared for this record

travel? >> we're staffed up. we're preparing across the country. we have been going through days of record travel. this has been the busiest travel we have seen to date. 8 of the busiest days have been in 2024, the most since mother's day weekend. we have been totally tested over the course of the last couple months in being able to meet our wait time of ten minutes for prechecked passenger and 30 minutes for a standard passenger. so we're ready. are there any airports where you are somewhat concerned about the possibility of long lines? >> no. we're pretty good across the entire system. and, craig, what we have is a kau dri of officers who volunteer to go to any airport where we may have staffing challenges. we do a lot of work in advance with the airlines to determine which airports are going to be the busiest and make sure we have staff there. >> u.s. military bases in europe were put on a heightened state of alert over the weekend.

any credible concerns that you can speak of? >> no specific threat to aviation, but we're always vigilant. you just never know. so we always have to be vigilant. we design our system, all of that training, with that in mind. we made significant technology investments over the last five or six years. so our security effectiveness continues to get better and better, stronger and stronger every day. >> david, i want to talk to you about guns for a moment. as tom costello reported earlier, tsa reported 6,700 guns so far. so far this year 3,000 guns have been recovered at tsa check points. the overwhelming majority of those guns are loaded. this is a message that you guys have been preaching for some time now. why don't you think that this is a message that's resonating with travelers? why are folks still showing up with so many guns? >> it's a big concern of ours.

you mentioned the 6,737 that we detected last calendar year. we're on pace to exceed that number this year. of course, there are more travelers this year, so the rate is actually ticking down a little bit. still, think about 7,000 plus firearms at check points in calendar year 2024. it is way too high. what i would ask travellers to think about all the time is if you carry a firearm, you can absolutely not carry that firearm through a check point. if you do, it will delay you and everyone else in the same lane with you. it cost you some money. and if you are a pre-checked passenger or ever want to be a pre-checked passenger, you will lose that eligibility for a period of five years. we're trying to make it very clear to those that might carry a firearm through a check point. the key thing to remember is if you want to travel with a firearm, you can do that. you can't do it through a check point. you have to declare the firearm and put it in your checked bag. >> really quickly here, we have

catastrophic damage in parts of the car rib ban last night, killing at least 7 people. sam brock is in jamaica for us this morning. >> reporter: yeah. right now things are calm. but right now what we're looking at is a situation where there will almost certainly be a category four storm that will sweep through this area, forecasted over or near the island. the difference between those two things is enormous. they were hit directly by a major hurricane in 1988 in gilbert. it changed life as they know it. what you are looking at is video of preparations here as we have seen the damage inflicted throughout the caribbean, whether it is st. vincent or grenada. we have now 7 deaths and counting. here the prime minister last night declaring the entire island a disaster area and implementing a curfew from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. he gave the green light to local

authorities to evacuate those in low-lying areas. there were in evacuations at that time underway. >> sam, thank you. >> that storm is on the move as we speak. dylan has been tracking it all morning. >> low-lying areas are at risk. the storm is still a category four hurricane with winds up to 145 miles an hour. and this will continue to move just to the south of jamaica here as a category four storm. putting that on the northern side of this island here, that's why we are looking at the chance of seeing some of our strongest winds, also our heaviest rain, up to a foot of rain is possible. it will continue to make its way through the ukitan peninsula over the next few days. we have hurricane warnings in effect as that storm continues to pass just through the south of jamaica this afternoon and it will continue to make its way through the peninsula. we will have to watch how much rain as we go into next week.

so we also have this big concern for a lot of heat. we are looking at 105 million people impacted by advises, heat watches, heat warnings. out west, the dry heat but extreme heat when you factor temperatures will be at 120 degrees. down south, it is about the heat dex. when you factor in that humidity, it makes it hard to stay cool. those hottest points of the day, in areas like monroe, it will feel like 114 degrees. but then out west, it will stay hot through this week and at least through the middle of next week, craig. >> thank you. rudy giuliani can no longer practice law in the state of new york. the former new york city mayor was disbarred tuesday. giuliani faces charges in georgia and arizona for spreading lies about mass voter fraud. he's also an unindicted coconspirator in the federal

election case against trump. his spokesperson called the decision flawed saying his legal team is looking at options to appeal. let's go to good news now. there is now a second drug to help in the battle against the debilitating disease. the food and drug administration approved a new alzheimer's drug under eli lily. it's been shown in clinical trials to modestly slow a decline in memory and thinking abilities for people with the disease. let's get more information out. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> so this means so much to so many families watching. let's dig in here. when will this drug be available to families? >> it is available now. it's given as an iv infusion. the average cost will be about $32,000 for a year's worth of treatment. >> wow. >> the hope is that medicare is expected to cover this. it is unclear about other insurance companies, how they

will cover it. the thing about this drug is in the study patients actually were able to stop the drug after they had regression of ameloyd plaque in their brain. they stopped after 18 months of treatment. so the idea is this could be beneficial in terms of cost savings and also time required to go and get treated. >> how does the drug work? >> it is similar to a different drug approved last year that basically clears out these amelloyd plaques that are hallmarks of alzheimer's in the brain. it showed a 35% reduction in cognitive decline over 18 months compared to those patients who did not get this. it is used for patients with mild cognitive impairment or mild alzheimer's disease. we know it works better in early stages. it reduced the stage of progression by 40%. >> didn't the other drug come

with serious side effects? is that the same for this one? >> the imaging abnormalities you see on mris, the small bleeds in the brain. now, it sounds bad. clinically most patients are not symptomatic from them. if they are, they could have things like seizures, headaches, nausea, vision changes. there is the possibility of infusion reaction. so certainly something patients discuss with their doctor, especially if they're on blood thinning medications. as you say, this is hope for patients and time for patients. >> absolutely. good news this morning. thank you. all right. are we ready for another boost? okay. this is a sweet one. a 90-year-old texas woman bonding with her adult granddaughter over their mutual love for taylor swift. this video from an eras concert in paris going viral recently.

intriguing theory. chris lowe's great white shark research in southern california is built on tagging. >> there it is. i see it. >> we're going to do the doesy doe. >> reporter: wow. this was the rod that the acoustic tag and the shark bent the rod. they track where and when these powerful apex predators swim. technological advances adding to the lab's 60-year pursuit of knowledge. today's shark population is held by three decades of conservation. >> when i was a grad student here in the '80s, hearing about sharks was rare. now any day of the week, i can take someone out and show them a shark. >> reporter: we saw several. drones revealing juvenile great whites swim near people 97% of

the time, off the beach with no attacks. >> we saw a shark here in the water. i'm watching people, and nobody seems to be the least concerned that there are sharks 250 feet away from them. >> reporter: this is a great example of a community that has just come to adapt to the fact that there are white sharks off the beach every day. >> tucked between santa barbara and l.a., it is billed as the safest beach in the world, free of rip tides, not sharks. >> most of the time we literally see sharks swim underneath people. they don't change their speed or direction. they just completely ignore them. >> because we're not their natural prey. >> exactly. if that were the case, southern california would be great for white sharks. >> reporter: now the question is why. these juvenile great whites get used to human sounds and realize we are not a threat. sharks don't have ears like we do. instead of external, there is

our internal, designed to capture sound that travels faster underwater. >> i'm going to drop it about a meter off the boat. >> reporter: so master student whitney jones is giving the sharks a hearing test. do sharks hear differently than we do? >> they're more sensitive to lower frequencies like we are. it is more like they could feel versus hear the sound. >> reporter: jones reported sounds of people paddling surf boards, kayaking and swimming. >> so i'm doing the swimming play back one more time. >> reporter: using an underwater speaker, she's playing it at different sounds and distances. a drone tracks the shark's reactions. >> we're thinking they're probably habituated to these sounds, so there probably won't be any responses. but if there are, i want to capture it with the drone. >> reporter: we all know sharks can smell blood in the water. that's the old cliche. what do they hear? >> we still don't really know how far away they can detect

those things. hopefully with these kinds of experiments, we can start to answer that. >> that image of southern california being costco for some of those sharks. if people are not prey, why do the sharks attack or bite humans? >> there are two theories. one is mistaken identity. somehow they think we're seals. the other is defensive. if i fell in the water, i was thinking just don't kick the shark because you don't want them to react and then bite as a result. but those are the two working theories. what's extraordinary is they don't know much about sharks. and we're trying to find out. and this hearing test is one way to find out why they react the way they do or they don't. >> fascinating. >> for the moment, they're beautiful creatures. >> weren't you worried they were going to bump your boat? >> i was more worried i would fall in and bump them. >> don't sit on the edge or

1. we are back now at 8:35 with a controversy of sorts that is raging in gyms nationwide. they have long been a place to unplug, focus on your health, you focus on your wellness. but is that changing? >> apparently so. some gym goers are getting fed up with the influencers recording in their personal space. emilie ikeda is here to say why it is a growing nuance. >> yeah, absolutely. there is so much buzz about this on social media right now. let me ask you this. have you ever been working out and been told to move so you don't get in someone's shot. or do you feel awkward because someone is shooting and you're in the background. it is becoming more common and making some feel awkward, annoyed and fed up.

>> there is a new backdrop for social media influencers. >> we have a full open body workout today. >> from the matt to the bike to pilates reformers, fitness fiends are recording their every move. but not everyone is pumped about the trend. skeptics calling the constant camera work disruptive and an invasion of privacy. >> i just knew that i was in the background in a lot of these videos. no one is asking me about them. >> in new york city, emily got so fed up with distractions, she started posting a sign outside of her classes. please no phones, especially no filming yourself working out. >> there is at least one person in every single one of my classes that is doing something distracting. there just needs to be sacred spaces where you are able to unplug. and i just don't think people are valuing that as much as they have been historically. >> reporter: many gyms like

oh, we are back with one of our absolute favorites in "today food." we have a fish fry recipe to help you celebrate the 4th. we love when marcus samuelson stops by with one of our most popular dishes. this time he's giving us a taste of his restaurant. it's on the island of nassau down in the bahamas. there is the qr code. it is up on your screen right now to get the recipe. i was just telling you before we started the segment, i had the honor of dining at this restaurant last year and actually had something similar to this while i was there. >> yep. >> it is a great restaurant. >> it is a fun place. and, obviously, it is a place of families and obviously when there is a hurricane in the caribbean, our thoughts always goes out to the families. but we're okay. in the bahamas, we're very fortunate, and i'm excited about

this fish fry. >> let's dig into it. >> we're using shrimp and snapper. i love snapper. when you get a fish like this, make sure the bones are out. cut them in two big pieces. the other tip you can ask for is sushi quality of fish. i know we're not making sushi, but you want the fishmonger to get the best fish possible, and most of the time they will get the best fish if you ask for sushi quality of fish. you want to marinade here. >> okay. >> every step along here, craig, in order to get that good meal, it needs to be seasoned every step. i'm adding in some lemon zest. >> what is that, coconut milk? >> this is butter milk. could be coconut milk, just to get the sour tangy, some salt. and then we're just going to whisk that, right? >> i can whisk it. >> you can whisk it, exactly. >> what is the verdict over there, ladies and gentlemen? >> oh, my goodness.

>> again and again. so i have a little bit of chili pepper in here and a little bit of garlic. >> what is the last thing? >> that comes from my home country of ethiopia. could be chili, chipotle. dump that in there. you got nice hands. you got to use those hands, craig. get in there. get in there. doesn't craig have pretty hands? >> he sure does. >> you said it. >> i'll get them dirty. how long will you let this marinade? >> overnight or at least 30 minutes. so you get some of the beautiful flavors in there. and now so i did that for us, the next step. but we're just going to dump that in here. see, this is a key. seasonings. crunch, a little bit of corn starch. >> corn starch. >> and i'm using flour, could be

any flour, all right? >> why do you like that particular flour? >> because you want to get a crunchy as possible. >> a third of each? >> a third of each. and we will just dump that in there, you know? easy, nice and crunchy. >> and what kind of oil are you using? >> using like a cannola oil here that can take heat really well. you don't need to use an olive oil here. peanut oil will work really well. you want to hear that sizzle? yes. and, again, when you shallow fry like this, not a lot of oil in the pan. >> tell me about this wire rack. >> you want all the fat to come down into the pan, not in your hand. >> i mean, here's the thing. we could stop here and just eat the shrimp and the fish. >> you know, in the bahamas, fish and grits is a breakfast item that people eat every
