where you can still watch some fireworks safely tonight, bracing for barrel. and we're tracking the hurricane as it moves from jamaica, pushing toward the cayman islands. this is today in the bay. good morning to you on this thursday. happy 4th of july to you all. i'm marcus washington and i'm kris sanchez. we are all red white and blue out. i think we're feeling the celebration though it might be different because of all of the heat, right? yeah. it's going to be hard to be outside. yeah. you're going to have to take it easy as we are dealing with this high heat. and you're also wanting to be very careful about any fireworks, grilling, anything that may start a fire. we are starting out all clear as we take a live look outside in san jose, and it's been a little bit warmer for us to start out the day, so we are watching out for those warm temperatures that we'll see as we go into the late morning into the afternoon. we're also going to be tracking the high fire danger that we'll

see as we go throughout today into the next couple of days. we're still dealing with these triple digit temperatures, and we're right now at 70 degrees in san jose. it is 63. in palo alto and upper 60s for dublin. we're starting out at 72 degrees in byron and fairfield in the low 70s for morgan hill. we are going to go back to the highs over 100 degrees today. we'll see those hottest temperatures between 2 and 4:00. and then by 6:00 it's starting to come down. just a little bit. but once again, overall it's going to be a really hot day. a major to extreme heat risk as this heat wave continues. although it won't be as intense as yesterda, the difference between 104 and 105. it's really still just going to be very hot today. we'll talk more about what's ahead for the weekend coming up in just a few minutes. all right. thank you kerry. so our

nbc bay area app is a great way to stay informed on this heat wave. you can get up to the minute updates sent to your phone for any weather or breaking news alerts, like any unfortunate fire. download it for free on all devices. speaking to those fires fire crews, they're already busy. and with the 4th of july holiday today, well, that means fireworks. often the illegal kind, and that can cause a lot of trouble. so because of the risk, some bay area cities are canceling their fireworks shows, some are moving forward despite the scorching forecast today in the bay's ginger conejero saab is live this morning with how crews are bracing for the worst. good morning ginger. good morning chris and marcus. and happy 4th of july to you both. now we're live in san francisco, the city that is annually holding its annual fireworks show today. but, you know, firefighters tell us every year they see illegal fireworks. i myself have seen and heard them even in the days leading up to 4th of july. now a few bay

cities like gilroy, san bruno, pacifica, dublin, they will allow so-called safe and sane fireworks. but fireworks firefighters say even those can be dangerous. this year, conditions like the triple digit heat and the dry vegetation add to the danger and crews are already stretched thin, with many of them battling fires in other parts of the state. we are fully staffed and we're working to continue kind of buffering those numbers and bring in more personnel. it has a lot to do with the fires in the state happening. we have resources that got sent out to support some of the other fires that are happening. and so because of that, we bring more resources in. in san jose, like many cities, all fireworks are illegal. so if you're at a social gathering with illegal fireworks, the host, the person with the fireworks, and the spectators they can all face fines. now there's also a form online where neighbors can report illegal fireworks. cal

fire also says to leave the fireworks to the professionals. here's a live look at the san francisco skyline. thousands of people expected to line the embarcadero tonight for the annual fireworks show. now yesterday, crews spent the day loading up two barges at pier 50. today, they will go out into the water and the fireworks will be shot from opposite sides of the bay, the show's producer tells us that they've been planning this display for month. the safest way to celebrate the 4th of july with fireworks is to come out to a big public display and the folks in san francisco are particularly lucky to have a city that will provide them with a world class display to see. now, over in the north bay, both saint helena and healdsburg are canceling fireworks shows due to red flag conditions. over in the east bay, the 4th of july parade in antioch is canceled as well.

comes down, it gets softer, it gets faster. i want to make sure that the reads in between have a nice flow that i'm sending you into the next performance with the right energy, the right focus, the right tone. so that's really kind of what i do. and i just, i just work on it before i get there, because once i get to d.c, it's we're off and running. all right. the event always ends with a spectacular fireworks show. pbs coverage begins at five. our time. governor newsom is showing his support for president biden, despite the president's shaky debate performance. he joined about 20 other democratic governors yesterday in a closed door meeting with the president, who apparently told them that he intends to stay in the race. governor newsom later posted on social media that quote, i heard three words from the president tonight. he's all in and so am i. end quote, the governor of new york, as well as the governors of maryland and minnesota, addressed the media following that meeting. we will stand with the president as we fight that force, that force being donald trump and together,

we'll make sure that americans know not just what joe biden did for all of us, but where he's going for the future and where he's going to take this country. this all comes as the president increases his outreach to lawmakers in an effort to double down on plans to run for reelection. his campaign also held separate all hands on deck calls during the day. governor newsom also announcing that he's releasing a new weekly podcast this month. it's called politicking. the governor will hold this with, along with governor, with oakland native former nfl running back marshawn lynch and his agent dog hendrickson. that's kind of coo. yeah, the hosts are actually promising to cover more than just politics. it's set to launch on july 15th. i was like hearing from marshawn lynch, our breaking this morning. the island of jamaica is reeling after it was slammed by hurricane beryl, which is now headed toward the cayman islands. the category four storm packed, destructive winds and a storm surge that destroyed homes

and farms. it is being called one of the strongest storms to impact jamaica in more than 15 years. we can now confirm that at least one person died in jamaica because of the storm, bringing that total number of deaths from beryl to at least eight across the caribbean. now, south texas is on high alert. texas governor greg abbott says emergency management is on standby and meteorologist kari hall is tracking the storm's path. good morning kari. good morning. and we are seeing this storm weakening just a bit now that it has moved past the cayman islands. but still, some of those rain bands affecting it. and as we take a look at the strength of this hurricane once again, now a category three moving to the west northwest at 20mph. and it has a way to go before it hits any land again. but we are expecting it to make another landfall in the yucatan peninsula by tomorrow morning into the afternoon, weakening just a bit before it enters the gulf of mexico. and this is the reason why southern texas, around the galveston area and

farther south, it's going to be in the area really closely monitoring this tropical system. here's a look at our high heat that we are going to see again today with santa rosa in the mid 90s, up to 109 in ukiah today, while we're mostly still seeing upper 90s and highs over 100 degrees for the inland areas, it won't be as hot as yesterday, but still pretty dangerous for long exposure. and our temperature today in san jose up to 99, while los gatos will see 99 there, 93 in san jose and 90 in hayward. going into the day after the fourth, we're still dealing with some widespread triple digit heat, and it may even come up another few degrees for some spots up to 105 for concord. and then on saturday, 106 degrees. so this heat is not letting up any time soon we'll be tracking this and talking more about the impact of all of this coming up in a few minutes. mike, you've been searching around trying to find some lower

gas prices, and i found two stations that have lower prices today. they're both right next to each other. let's talk about them. basically, they made the top five best prices in the state. greater price at great gas. so as we're looking towards cupertino on north boulevard, it's 385, which has one of the state's best. the next one is just down the block. deanza boulevard is where you'll find those heading out through solano county today, well under $4 still stop at vallejo at bond fair on sacramento street for 399. and then the best in san francisco is a little higher here. it's 440 or 439. best gasoline mini mart on san jose avenue. thank you for sharing those prices on gasbuddy.com the roadways. no major problems. that red section actually that's roadwork in niles canyon. i don't think they even had it last night, but the maps still don't show it as active. it's open. don't worry. highway four. there was an overnight fire right along the freeway. no damage to any cars or it doesn't sound like they were worried about some power poles, but highway four has been reopened

to receive their diploma, thanks to a recent approval from governor gavin newsom. the class of 2031 will have to pass a personal finance class in order to graduate. the financial literacy course will teach them about banking, budgeting, insurance, investing and credit. lawmakers also approved a new ethics studies requirement, and this is going to include fentanyl use and health classes. now, in the next few years, schools will be required to offer those classes, but in 2030, seniors will have to pass the classes to graduate. california, now one of 25 states that actually include a financial literacy requirement, and supporters say that the curriculum changes are relative and reflective of the changes of society. are they? i feel like we learned how to balance a checkbook at home ec back in the day. they do that anymore, not people don't take home ec anymore. not that long ago. all right. for a lot of people in a matter of hours and maybe provided it's not too hot, you'll be enjoying your 4th of july barbecues. but the triple digit heat also means you have a

shorter window for serving outside. whether you are serving up traditional burgers and dogs or cold food like salad and fruit, experts say you want to make sure you put your food in the fridge or on ice. after just one hour, so that you don't make people sick. the danger zone is when food has sat out for more than two hours at temperatures of 40 degrees to 140 degrees. after that, two hour window, bacteria grows rapidly inside of the food. however, on the hot summer months like july, and if temperatures are 90 degrees and above, that two hour window decreases into a one hour window. so tick tock goes the clock. the usda recommends having a cooler with ice next to your cookout to make sure you can preserve any perishables. finishing touches are now underway in new york city. this is for macy's 48th annual fireworks show. pyrotechnicians are loading the tens of

thousands of shells that will actually explode to look like an american flag. this is the first time in over a decade that display has taken place over the hudson river in new york. organizers say that this year's show features a musical score filled with summertime favorites reimagined by artists including mickey guyton, brandy clark and amber mark. those fireworks should be seen for miles. well, the hudson river allows macy's show to have something more of a larger diameter shells, bigger fireworks, more three dimensional than ever before. now safety first. right. so before any of those fireworks can go off, new york fire department's fire prevention inspectors are combing every piece of that show just to make sure that it can go off without a hitch. in addition to live performances, we're going to see luis fonsi, lainey wilson, and many more. you can actually watch the macy's 4th of july fireworks special right here on nbc. bay area. that's tonight at 8:00. my husband's family is in

new york, and it is so unnerving to be there on the 4th of july, coming from california, because there everything is so lush and green that it doesn't matter. there's no fire danger. yeah and so they're setting things off left and right and i'm like, oh my god, it is so unnerving. yeah, it's different everywhere else. but you know, i think for what we were talking about, i think drone shows should be more popular here. and they're really cool to look. yeah, they're really cool. so, you know, however you're celebrating today, we just are advising everyone to be safe out there and take care of yourself and everyone around you. as we're dealing with this high heat, we are a little bit warmer to start out our mornings compared to what we usually see. we're at 70. in dublin, it's 70 in san jose, and we're in the upper 50s for san rafael. some spots are a little bit cooler, but we're dealing with all of this unhealthy air quality in a lot of spots due to the wildfire smoke coming in, as well as also the ozone levels that increase when we get these really hot and hazy days, it's going to be most unhealthy in the east bay once

again in santa clara valleys and those low lying areas where we are going to have a lot of those pollutants trapped. but we are looking at some very nice conditions for the rose white and blue parade in san jose. it is going to be warm even in the morning. we're going from 80 degrees at 9:00 to 84 degrees and then quickly heating up will be 88 degrees at 11:00. after that point, you'll probably want to head for some air conditioning as we are going to see highs in some parts of the city in the mid to upper 90s and up to 102 today in morgan hill, 101 in livermore. so notice that these temperatures aren't up to 110 and even 111. like we were seeing yesterday. but hot is ho, and we're still up to 104 today in fairfield, 95 in moraga, oakland today at 86. and it won't be as hot in san francisco. but we're in the upper 70s. there into the day tomorrow. it may get slightly hotter for some areas, including the coastline, and we're back to

widespread highs over 100 degrees for much of the north bay into the east bay. and unfortunately, on saturday, as we were hoping to see those temperatures coming down in some spots, we're back up to 110 degrees. so watching out for this prolonged risk of heat that we see extending into the weekend and the next week, it's in the upper 90s, it looks a little bit better, but still quite dangerous as we are dealing with days on end of all of this heat and looking at san francisco, we're in the mid 80s today and we'll see more of those 80s in the forecast through the weekend, and then we'll bring it back to the mid 70s for the start of next week. mike, you're hearing about a crash in lanes block. yeah, we actually were able to see a glimpse of it. there we go longer. look this is eastbound 80 the east shore freeway going away from the bay bridge. chp had word that all lanes were blocked. now notice because we have this live camera, even though all lanes of the freeway getting away from the bay bridge and past university here, they're blocked. it looks like folks are getting off. and then

enrolled him in a sailing summer camp when he was just four years old. it's all the hard work really paying off. i'm i'm blown away because it's such a cliche to say like, oh, you can do the hard work. it's going to pay off and there's no guarantees. and i've definitely been on that side of things where you put all the hard work in, and it doesn't kind of come together, but to also see it come together, it it's an amazing feeling and it really gives me a lot of inspiration in my life to say, like, you can continue to dream big outside of the olympics, and no matter what i put my mind to, i can work really hard to make it happen. and he already is. he says his aeronautical and astronautical engineering degrees from stanford come in handy in this sport. we are wishing him the very best and go mom for picking a good summer camp. i know right? hey, don't forget the opening ceremony for the 2024 olympic games. taking place on friday, july 26th. and of course, nbc bay area going to bring you that exclusive coverage throughout the paris olympic games. coming up next,

changes. some bay area communities are making because of the higher temperatures and how it could celebrate change the celebrations near you. no break for firefighters on the front lines. we're going to update you on the large wildfire burning in butte county and where that containment stands this morning. plus, new water conservation requirements are approved on a permanent basis statewide. the new timeline for policies supporters say will make the state better prepared for the next drought. this is today in the bay. thanks so much for joining us and happy birthday america. i'm kris sanchez, i'm here for laura. i'm marcus washington. all right. it is 4th of july. it is a celebration and it's a lot of heat. meteorologist kari hall is tracking all of that for us today. and kari, i mean, what can we expect? i mean, temperatures right now look nice. they look great, right now. and i think for right, it's

early and you'll probably want to grill and do some of those outdoor activities. getting the backyard set up early in the morning if you can. maybe you're up already marinating the food so that you can put it on the grill at like 9 a.m. because after that point, it really does start to get quite warm. it's at 70 right now in san jose. and here's a look at our trend as we go into late morning into the afternoon. we're back into the upper 90s for today with those hottest temperatures between 2 and 4:00 this afternoon. we're up to 102 in morgan hill. and also that major to extreme risk of heat for the tri valley, with livermore hitting 101 105 in vacaville as well as 105 in clear lake, santa rosa in the mid 90s. and we're in the upper 70s in san francisco. we are seeing it slightly cooler near the coast. but then for tomorrow, if you still have the day off, you're trying to enjoy a nice long weekend. we're still going to need to find some air

conditioning, as our highs across much of the bay area continue to be dangerous during the middle of the afternoon. so we're talking more about this and events going on, as well as some weekend events. i'll have a look at some of that and the forecast coming up in a few minutes. intense heat you're talking about kari live. look for us this morning in san jose. this is where that intense heat has turned deadly. san jose mayor matt mahan confirming that an unhoused person died yesterday from heat related causes. now, in a post on x, he says in part that this was avoidable tragedy and is also exactly why the city is moving with urgency to create shelter for everyone. now, experts are calling this a good reminder to make sure you stay cool during the sweltering heat. you can check on your neighbors too, just to make sure, especially those who are vulnerable. many are opening cooling centers and providing water power outlets and free wi-fi. now our team compiling a list of all of those locations for you. you can use

your phone to scan that qr code there on the screen, or you can go to nbcbayarea.com. i'll still burning with very little progress. the thompson fire in butte county, now surpassing 3500 acres, and firefighters on the front lines, are getting no break from this extreme heat today in the bay's ginger conejero saab live in san francisco and ginger the firefighters. this is taxing for them. some of them have been injured. that's right chris. and yesterday we knew that there were four that possibly were injured. now, we do know that eight firefighters have been injured and fighting the thompson fire up in butte county. this is now day three of fighting these flames. and as you mentioned, firefighters have made very little progress. the fire has spread to now over 3500 acres. and as you all were just mentioning, temperatures will continue to scorch through parts of northern california. and you can see the impact on our air quality here in the bay area.

here are some video of what it looked like as the sun set in san jose last night. that haze is from the still burning thompson fire very hazy video as well. out of butte county where firefighters there continue to attack this fire from the air and on the ground. the thompson fire has forced 28,000 people to evacuate, with more under evacuation warnings. it has destroyed at least four buildings, another 12,000 structures are threatened, including some in the city of oroville. now the governor has issued a state of emergency for the fire, and he has also provided fema support. it is now 7% contained this morning, providing little relief for the thousands of people who continue to watch, wait and hope that their homes will be spared. it's been very helpful to be able to come over here and just pop and grab a couple of things and just see how our neighbors are doing. we did hear a couple of neighbors lost their house, and it just overwhelmingly just,

blessed that we were safe and that they did such an amazing job last night. it's incredible. it's been a little stressful. but, you know, once i, you know, i know that the firefighters are going to take care of us. well, fire danger is top of mind. and other northern california counties, including lake county, a much smaller fire. the adams fire, is burning there. that's near clear lake now. it has forced evacuations and has burned 16 acres. it is 15% contained now. firefighters here in san francisco are are on high alert. we talked about yesterday how firefighters across the bay area were helping support the fighting. the thompson fire. they tell me that they're also really keeping a close eye on things. now that 4th of july is here and a warning and a reminder as well to the public to please celebrate responsibly. we'll have more on other ways that you can celebrate the safe ways to celebrate in our next half hour. kris. i mean, it's hard when you're used to a

certain tradition, but sometimes we have to be flexible and things a little different. thanks, ginger. 535 this morning in the north bay, crews continue that search for a man who is believed to have drowned in the russian river. that man disappeared while swimming last night. this is near villa grande beach in monte rio. dive teams quickly hit the water, but they were unable to locate him. new details this morning following last month's gunfire during juneteenth celebrations at lake merritt, police in oakland say there is now a suspect in custody. video shows the chaos that unfolded following what police say was an altercation that led to a gunfight. in all, 14 people were injured. amazingly and luckily, no one died. police say the suspect is a 23 year old oakland man who is also among the injured. he is accused of shooting four people. investigators are still trying to identify others who were part of that violence. well, the vote count still not finalized this

morning. this is in the special recall election involving two trustees on the sunol school board. ryan jorgensen and linda hurley are both losing their recall elections by significant margins each last year voted to ban the pride flag flying at sunol glenn school. a third trustee voted against that ban is not being recalled. the district will now have to hold a special election to replace those two trustees. all this heat wave is forcing some cities in the bay area to cancel their fireworks show or parades this 4th of july, but not in danville. yeah, and that's where we find today in the bay's bob redell. this morning. and, bob, i know the town is still expecting thousands of people there for this morning's parade. yeah. and this is a tradition here in danville that's been going on for decades. and people here take it very seriously. there's a man and woman just off camera behind me. they are waiting for this side street to shut down at 6:00. the man has been out here since 5:00, so they can move their pop up tent out there and put up an encampment and be first here along the parade route. and you

can see other people have a similar idea. take a look to your right, all up and down. this is hearts avenue, danville boulevard. you've got people with their chairs out here since yesterday. presumably so they have a spot saved around the parade route. if you're not familiar, this is a regular tradition here in the town of danville for this morning's annual 4th of july parade, which starts at around 9 a.m, will last 2 to 3 hours. more than 100 local groups are expected to march or drive in the parade. now remember, there is an excessive heat warning in effect, the temps are forecast to be already in the 80s and 90s during parade time. normally, close to 40,000 people attend. the town of danville is okay with and understands that if that number is lower this year because of the high temperatures, we are telling people how to best prepare for the parade, and that may include skipping this year. we certainly are encouraging people to not have their pets come with them this year, due to the fact that pavement can get really hot and

make sure that you bring blankets to sit on, especially if you're going to have little kids. this is small town america and this is what we need. yep. don't we just talked about this at dinner. this is our heritage. concord is another city expecting a big turnout for its 4th of july events, beginning with a parade and ending with a festival and fireworks at mount diablo high. organizers are taking precautions to make sure everyone has a fun and safe time again in this heat. but the hot weather is forcing some cities to change their plans for today. in the north bay, both saint helena and healdsburg canceling fireworks shows due to red flag conditions. there's been wildfires up there already. they don't want to start another one. and in the city of antioch, the annual 4th of july parade is canceled due to the heat. but the event is set for the evening will go on as planned. live here in danville, bob redell today in the bay. anyone heading out there? make sure they bring their waters and you know the fans. it's hot, right? and if you take your dog, make sure you

afternoon in san jose, we have the rose white and blue parade that starts out at about 80 degrees, and then throughout the rest of the morning into the afternoon, we're headed for the mid to upper 90s there today, and for a lot of our inland areas, we're looking at highs over 100 degrees. the hottest hour between 2 and 3:00. and then it starts to come back down as the breeze picks up at 7:00. it's still pretty hot at 93 degrees, but right at sunset we're going to see temperatures dropping down to the low 80s and then upper 70s. in san francisco. it's going to be mostly sunny throughout the day, upper 70s and then in the low 60s. so make sure that if you are going to enjoy the fireworks there, you bring a jacket because it's definitely going to be cooler. looking at santa cruz throughout the weekend, it's going to be very warm there. upper 70s on friday, mid 70s on saturday and then low 70s on sunday. you can see the trend there cooling off just a bit, but it is going to be a very hot

and tahoe this weekend in the low 90s for high temperatures. but then we do have that nice cooldown for the overnight hours with those lows in the upper 50s. so no matter what you're planning on doing, we just encourage you to be safe. and mike, do you have an update on that crash in berkeley? i have a great update. kerry. it turns out, in fact, though, that there were two separate crashes. no major injuries. and as you can see, a very quick recovery. less than ten minutes ago, chp notified us and we watched as they escorted the vehicles off of the roadway. there was even a hit and run there. they got the abandoned vehicle out of the area as well and everything recovered. we're back at speed there. as you're traveling away from the bay bridge, everything was jammed up. those sensors will light up in the next couple of minutes. no more problem. heading away from the bridge through berkeley, heading toward the bridge. no problem there either. so we'll take a look at the wider view. just green sensors. let's look at the altamont. even out of the altamont, that's the indicator of how light this morning commute is, right now. talking about the build throughout the day. so watch around oakland.

there's a midday game and there will be more midday traffic. there's a note. we do have most of the transit area about half the transit agencies are out of service today. so check your agency's website. others are like today with modified holiday or sunday service. there's only one agency that's not reducing service today. that would be bart. now they do have a sunday schedule. so there's different timing. from 8 a.m. through midnight. we'll have service though. the through midnight part is the key. they've added additional service three line service after the fireworks show through midnight. and so that's for folks to get back away from the fireworks on the embarcadero. is viewable throughout san francisco, so an option for you to get into the city and out of the city without worrying about driving. and a note if you're driving, you see those fireworks. don't just watch them from driving. you got to pull over somewhere safe. get to a shopping center and go to the parking lot, and then look up. because if you're looking up and not at the road, then there's more for me to report back to you guys. yeah it's distracting. thanks, mike. 543 for you, this morning. that's

dangerous heat in union city. you're right now at 68 degrees and will be in the upper 60s through 7:00. and then after that, temperatures quickly start to ramp up as we head for 88 degrees at noon. and in the low 90s again for today, there will be some more changes in our microclimate forecast leading into the weekend. more on that in a few minutes. and right now we're looking at a live look 101 san jose. we typically see a buildup in traffic about now. this particular time of the morning. but folks are declaring independence from the morning commute. i think a lot of places we'll show you the bigger view, though, coming up. well, delta airlines apologizing after serving spoiled food on a transatlantic flight that took off from detroit. now it forced the amsterdam bound plane to make an emergency landing in new york early yesterday. all those passengers on board refused medical attention because it was an overnight flight. the airline

booked all of those passengers in a hotel before resuming the flight later yesterday. that is a rough day of travel. two sources this morning tell nbc news that sean diddy combs is now the subject of a federal investigation. a grand jury is hearing evidence which could lead to an indictment for diddy. right now, there is no indication that charges are imminent. the u.s. attorney's office and combs's attorney did not respond to a request for comment from nbc news. but it comes after a pair of raids on homes that the rapper owns in los angeles and miami. new this morning, with the idea of being better positioned for future droughts. california for the first time ever, is permanently restricting water distribution for cities and towns. now, the state water resources control board has approved a controversial plan requiring water supplies to gradually reduce their deliveries to cities and towns statewide. that plan is expected to roll in over the next 15 years, but by 2027,

some suppliers will cut back deliveries by about 25. critics fear that it will lead to new water use restrictions or high rates. suppliers that do not comply with this will eventually face fines. now the new rules are expected to take effect next year. turning to our climate in crisis, many people will celebrate the 4th of july at bay area beaches or maybe up in lake tahoe. according to surfrider, the nonprofit ocean conservation group, the day after the fourth. so the 5th of july is known as the dirtiest beach day of the year. last year, volunteers picked up 100,000 pounds of trash and litter after the holiday. they're calling on all of us to do our part to protect our beautiful coastlines. trash can harm people, our pets and marine life so you can help prevent waste in the first place by using reusables, that means bringing your own spoons, forks, plates, and cups from home. and if you need last minute things, choose alternative and recyclable material or

compostable material like bamboo straws or linen napkins. beyond the holiday, you can keep practicing what's known as leave no trace. that means once you're ready to leave the beach or a picnic area, make sure the areas around you are clean and ready to be enjoyed by others. i mean, do we have to say that? don't leave your trash at the beach. i like the linen, you know. makes you feel a little bit more fancy. i use napkins and my husband's like, why? i'm like, because i'm cute. all right. it is 549 for you right now. and you know what? one company wants to turn the tide on fossil fuels by focusing on renewable energy from ocean waves. this is interesting. water covers 70% of the planet. so it makes sense that we would try to harvest its energy to power our communities. ceo inna braverman and her company, eco wave power, has developed technology that turns waves into green electricity, already powering homes overseas.

in israel, we see california is a very strategic location for eco wave power as according to the national renewable energy laboratory of the united states, in california alone, there is a possibility to produce 69% of all california's energy needs from the power of the waves. the u.s. has over 95,000 miles of shoreline, and wave energy may be the wave of the future, powering 130 million homes, according to the u.s. department of energy. but testing marine energy technologies can be difficult and expensive. not only that, moon phases and storm systems impact wave heights. braverman says eco wave power can adapt when the waves are too high for the system to handle the floaters automatically. when the storm passes, they go back into the water and commence operation so the system is very simple, easy cost efficient. and the best

part of it that it's truly a renewable energy source. so eco wave power has the vision of installing hundreds of thousands of wave energy power stations all over the world. and the governor here in california has already greenlighted the first ones to be installed at the port of los angeles, and so that could be happening soon. now you can learn more about this technology and other climate change topics on our website, nbcbayarea.com, and click on the climate in crisis tab. i like that idea. let's take a live look at san jose, where the new water park calabanga is opening today. just as temperatures hit triple digits in the bay area. this is at cunningham park in east san jose. you might remember it as raging waters, so they will open the doors for their first guests at 11 this morning. nbc bay area sky ranger flew over the park yesterday so that we could get a sneak peek. as the employees were finishing

their final preparations. raging waters as what it was formerly known as suddenly closed last year, but the new operators had hoped to open last week. they had some electrical issues, but they say now they are good to go. i love it when you said sneak peak and we were all looking very closely to see how much did they change from when it was raging water. so they're doing fireworks there tonight. oh yeah. so that's going to be really nice and a great way to cool off. and celebrate the fourth. we're just all looking for ways to cool down, stay safe and enjoy our holiday. it's right now 70 degrees in dublin and also 70 in san jose. it's 57 in san rafael and san francisco. you're walking out the door to a nice 60 degrees. now one thing i'm watching is our air quality. there will be some smoke in some parts of the bay areas. we do have numerous fires that are burning, including the thompson fire up in butte county. a lot of that smoke blowing off

towards the east and away from the bay area. so it does look good for this evening. although fireworks can temporarily put a lot of smoke in the air and affect our air quality, and hopefully we don't get any new fires, that's going to be the key to being able to breathe a little bit easier, but it is a spare the air alert day as we're dealing with more of that unhealthy air quality due to the high levels of ozone, and in this heat, especially with more people being outside, watch out for the signs of heat exhaustion or what's more, severe heat stroke. we're looking at some of those symptoms, including dizziness, thirst, heavy sweating, rapid heart rate and weakness. and then for heat stroke, it's confusion. you stop sweating red hot dry skin, rapid strong pulse and then eventually possibly loss of consciousness. so be very careful out there as our temperatures go back to 102 degrees for morgan hill, we'll see some highs over 100 degrees for the tri valley parts of the east bay. it won't be as hot as yesterday, but still pretty

dangerous due to us dealing with this for day after day. it continues into tomorrow with a major to extreme heat risk, and you can see that these temperatures may get even hotter on saturday. so there's not any real relief here in the near term. sunday is also still dangerously hot, and then we're in the upper 90s for monday into the middle of next week, and our overnight temperatures may be just slightly cooler for the middle of next week. while san francisco will be in the mid 80s today, we see more of that extending into the weekend and then mid 70s next week. mike, you're seeing that back up quickly. clear from the east shore freeway. yeah. after the two crashes in berkeley cleared from the east shore freeway speeds got back very quickly because of the light traffic here at the bay bridge. we see how light the traffic flow is. this is tremendous for your drive across in towards san francisco. no delays through the toll plaza. remember mind those speeds through those toll plazas for safety's sake. we have green sensors. it's basically a monochrome map right now as we're looking toward the area. here's the richmond bridge

coming across where we typically would start to see a build. right now it's just before 6:00, but no problems here. again, no slowing sensors through the area. and so we don't have any issues here as far as the vasco drive. we're at pretty much the minimum. the lowest we see for the morning is a 17 minute drive. look at that. even out of the altamont pass, no delays approaching grant line road and none in toward the dublin interchange, continuing toward the castro valley. y south bay, easy flow of traffic back to you. thanks, mike. we'll have now about 30,000 california homeowners are starting to lose insurance policies provided by one of the state's largest companies. as of this week, state farm is dropping policies in some of the areas of the highest risk when it comes to fire danger. now, orinda is one bay area city expected to get hit especially hard. that company first announcing that decision back in the spring that move is the latest example of insurers pulling back coverage, citing growing costs and increased risk for california disasters. so what do you do if
