triple digit temperatures return. meteorologist kari hall is tracking your hot independence day forecast, and firefighters are on high alert across the bay area as illegal fireworks pose an even greater danger. this year. the strategies ahead of the celebrations and bracing for barrel. we're tracking the hurricane and the damage it's caused as it moves out of jamaica. this is today in the bay. and a good morning to you on this thursday. happy 4th of july. i'm marcus washington and i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia is off this morning. but we are tracking your travel in case you're headed somewhere this morning. and meteorologist kari hall is tracking that forecast as well. another hot day. we've
6:01 am
been talking a lot about this. you've been dealing with it, but there are still some places where temperatures are a lot milder. and that includes san francisco. i think it's going to be another great beach day, but we're starting out right now at 60 degrees in san francisco, 60 in san mateo. it's in the upper 60s for san jose and 68 in livermore, 69 in concord and martinez, and in the upper 50s for much of the north bay. so we do have a nice cool morning once again. it's going to be another hot day with a major to extreme heat risk for a lot of our inland valleys, with mountain view headed to 90 degrees, it will also be 90 in hayward and 101 in concord, as hot as 105 in vacaville and 109 today in ukiah. in santa rosa will be in the upper 90s. and for this holiday, we have a lot of people off and that may extend into tomorrow as well. we're going to have another day of intense heat while along the coastline. it's going to be much more comfortable. it's going to be a
6:02 am
very popular destination, and even trying to get there is going to take you quite a while, as this heat also extends into saturday. we'll talk more about this and what's ahead. coming up in a few minutes. thank you kari, and a great way to stay prepared is getting those up to the minute updates sent straight to your phone for any breaking news or weather alerts, fire alerts, download our nbc bay area app. it is free for all devices. well, firefighters are on high alert this 4th of july. this is along with the extreme heat. illegal fireworks can provide a double whammy. so some bay area cities are now canceling their fireworks shows. others are moving forward despite the scorching temperatures today in the bay. ginger conejero saab is live this morning and ginger, we can only hope that tonight is quiet for those firefighters. that's right, chris and marcus. good morning and happy 4th of july to you. we're live in san francisc. that is the hope of firefighters here. the city is hosting its
6:03 am
annual fireworks show later tonight. chris and cross our fingers. hopefully it will be a safe one, but firefighters do tell us that every year they see fires that are sparked by illegal fireworks. a few bay area cities have taken measures into their own hands, including gilroy, san bruno, pacifica and dublin. they will allow so-called safe and sane fireworks, but firefighters say even those can be dangerous. now. this year, conditions like the triple digit heat and the dry vegetation add to the danger. crews are already stretched thin, with many of them battling fires in other parts of the state. we are fully staffed and we're working to continue kind of buffering those numbers and bring in more personnel. it has a lot to do with the fires in the state happening. we have resources that got sent out to support some of the other fires that are happening. and so because of that, we bring more resources in. in san jose, like many cities, all fireworks are
6:04 am
illegal. so if you are at a social gathering with illegal fireworks, the host, the person with the fireworks and the spectators can all face fines. there's also a form online where neighbors can report illegal fireworks. cal fire also says please leave the fireworks to the professionals. here's a live look at the san francisco skyline, where thousands of people are expected to line the embarcadero tonight for the annual fireworks show. yesterday, crews spent the day loading up two barges at pier 50, and today they will go out into the water and the fireworks will be shot, creating a beautiful fireworks display. the show's producer says they've been planning this display for months. the safest way to celebrate the 4th of july with fireworks is to come out to a big public display, and the folks in san francisco are particularly lucky to have a city that will provide them with
6:05 am
a world class display to see. now, over in the north bay, both saint helena and healdsburg are canceling fireworks because of red flag conditions over in the east bay, the 4th of july parade in antioch is canceled due to the heat, but the event's set for the evening will go as planned. so if you're still looking for something to do, check out our independence day guide. you can scan the qr code and you can get a complete list of celebrations, including parades and fireworks show. of course, if you are planning on being in the heat, make sure you stay hydrated, take it easy and then of course, leave the fireworks to the professionals. guys, back to you. thank you very much, ginger. well, just into our newsroom, this morning, san francisco firefighters tell us a family of three is displaced this morning after an overnight house fire in the mission district. they posted video on social media, but people also posted video on
6:06 am
citizen app. this happened on leece street at mission. we've asked what the cause of the fire was, but firefighters have not been able to tell us at this point. governor gavin newsom showing his support for president biden despite the president's shaky debate performance. he joined about 20 other democratic governors yesterday in a closed door meeting with the president, who apparently told them that he intends to stay in the race. governor newsom later posted on social media, quote, i heard three words from the president tonight. he's all in and so am i. end quote now, governors from new york, maryland and minnesota addressed the media following that meeting. we will stand with the president as we fight that force, that force being donald trump and together, we'll make sure that americans know not just what joe biden did for all of us, but where he's going for the future and where he's going to take this country. now, this all comes as the president increases his outreach to lawmakers in an effort to double down on plans to run for reelection. his campaign also
6:07 am
held separate all hands on deck calls during the day. governor newsom also announcing that he is releasing a new weekly podcast this month. it is called politicking. the governor will host alongside oakland native and former nfl running back marshawn lynch and his agent doug hendrickson. now the host, are promising the coverage is going to be more than politics. you can watch or listen. i should say, as it's set to launch on july 15th, that should be interesting. 606 right now and breaking this morning. we're getting an early look at the island of jamaica, which was slammed by hurricane beryl. hurricane beryl, now heading toward the cayman islands as a category three but still powerful that storm packed destructive winds and a storm surge that destroyed homes and farms. and it is being called one of the strongest storms to impact jamaica in more than 15 years. at least one person is confirmed to have died in jamaica, and that means the
6:08 am
total number of people who died because of beryl is eight. across the caribbean now, south texas is on high alert, and governor greg abbott says emergency management is on standby. i'm meteorologist kari hall is tracking the storm's path and, you know, it's downgraded to a category three, but that's still really powerful. that's still a major hurricane. and we are seeing it weakening just a bit due to some strong upper level winds. but overall that could bring in a lot of heavy rainfall and some very dangerous wind as we see this tracking now over open water as it moves away from the cayman islands, it's going to have a while before it reaches the yucatan peninsula. and it may continue as a major hurricane on its westward track. right now, at about 20mph. with those winds up to 120mph. once it goes through areas in the yucatan peninsula near cozumel and cancun, it's going to weaken to a tropical storm and then enter into the gulf of mexico,
6:09 am
where the water is very warm. so we'll have to see where this trends with the intensity as it moves closer to northern mexico and southern texas over the next few days. right now, we're getting started here in the bay area, bracing for another hot day with a high fire danger as we celebrate the 4th of july. and there will be still the red flag warning continuing due to low humidity and breezy winds. and we will also have to watch out for this heat. with a lot of highs in the 90s and over 100 degrees for the inland valleys, but we'll be in the upper 70s near the coast and in san francisco. we'll talk about the heat ramping up again for the weekend, coming up in a few minutes. mike, i'm hoping your numbers are going down. yeah, we're trying to help folks plan in case maybe they're taking a road trip and you need to fill up. let's take a look out here, folks. as we move along to our prices here, we'll start with the south bay, where we have a new leader, a greater price at great gas in cupertino on north de anza boulevard. price did go down. carry its 385, one of the best prices in the state. went
6:10 am
down by $0.10 from the san jose low or from the south bay low yesterday. unfortunately, that's the only great jump we have there. heading out through solano county today. you stay under four bucks, barely. still just 3.99 as the best stop in vallejo. here we're talking about bond fair on sacramento street. and then the last number is the best in san francisco. it's 439. the best gasoline mini mart on san jose avenue. so lots of prices listed here. big range on gasbuddy.com. that's where you'll find the best price near you on the roadways. we'll take a look at green sensors. pretty much all over the bay. not pretty much all over the bay. we look at a smooth flow of traffic. even at the bay bridge, there's no metering lights, no backup. look at this shot of oakland. you guys, we almost never see this. but this is holiday morning traffic. it will build though, so leave before 2 p.m. triple a says that's when the numbers really jump up. back to you. that is quiet as christmas morning, mike. well america's best known hot dog eating contest gets started in just a few hours. yeah, but, you

top dog. as we have reported, san jose's joey chestnut is not going to be there. romney smith, from our sister station in new york, tries to digest the changes this year. we know it's time for breakfast, but we are already focused on hot dogs and lemonade here in new york city. take a look behind me. the barricades are up as everyone is getting ready for the world's famous nathan's hot dog eating contest. the reason this competition will be different, and probably more attention paid to it, is because there will be a new champion for the first time in years, we officially weigh in and certify the greatest eaters in the world with reigning champ joey chestnut out. competitive eaters stared each other down at the ceremonial weigh in at hudson yards yesterday for more than 50 years, nathan's famous hot dogs has hosted the incredible competitive eating competition. nine time female winner miki sudo will be competing today, and she has a new fan in tow,
6:16 am
her infant son, who will no doubt cheer on mommy but the reigning male champ with a record of 76 hot dogs eaten in just ten minutes is joey chestnut. he will not be competing because he signed with a vegan hot dog company. it got a little dramatic. lawyers had to get involved, but he'll be back in the future. but right now he will not compete today. he also had a prior commitment to do with our military. he will be in texas eating hot dogs with the troops, and i have to say, i want him on the 4th of july, but if he can't be with us, i'm very happy that he's with the troops celebrating the armed forces. however, because he's not going to be there, we're going to have the fiercest contest in in, i don't know, probably 15 years. and if competitive hot dog eating wasn't enough for you. nathan's also sponsors the lemonade chugging contest. i say chugging and not drinking because they literally chug the lemonade in less than a minute. in fact, right now, the record holder drank an entire gallon in
6:17 am
23 seconds. so there's a lot going on today. a lot of people wondering who the new champions will be for not only hot dog eating, but chugging lemonade. reporting in coney island. romney smith for today in the bay. that's how fast i drink my coffee. we know mike inouye would win if he wins there, but he has to work today, so i'm just saying. all right, all right. so look trending for you. this morning. not just americans birthday. america's birthday, i should say, but another birthday for maine's famous lobster lady. so this little lady just turned 104 and she is still going strong. we have met her over the years. her name is virginia oliver. she started lobstering at eight years old. she says she's renewing her commercial lobster license for this season and plans to go lobstering again this year. no retirement. her secret to a healthy life is to stay is staying active, she says. she also eats lobster and chocolate to relieve stress and fresh air, of course, doesn't hurt. i had a dream about lobster the other day. yeah, i have no, i don't remember much
6:18 am
about it. i like lobster, i love lobster. okay, maybe you were just having a craving. maybe so you're gonna put it on the grill? what's up? i cannot seem in anything. you need to put it on the grill or just put it on the sidewalk. right now. it is just so hot. kari, you were talking about. maybe people are up this early because. going to get it on. yeah. you're marinating. you're getting everything ready. cooking before the house heats up and then getting it done. maybe just warm it up in the microwave later on. today it is going to be a day where you're changing your plans and adjusting due to the heat that we're dealing with, and it is a sunny start as we take a live look outside in san jose, and we're in the upper 60s right now, we're seeing a lot of our morning starts in the upper 60s and upper 50s for the north bay. so some spots have had a nice recovery and a chance to cool down. we're still dealing with some hazy skies and some moderate levels of ozone and wildfire smoke, and we're looking at our air quality outlook today, which of course is important and can change with a lot of fireworks in the sky.
6:19 am
and we may have some worsening air quality this evening. and in fremont we have the 4th of july parade starting at 10:00. it's going to be 80 degrees as you're getting your spot, make sure you're just drinking lots of water as we go throughout the morning, because at 1:00 we're already at 93 degrees and we're headed for those low 90s for today. it's going to be as hot as 101 in concord, and about the same in livermore. a lot of highs over 100 degrees for the north bay, but we are seeing it coming down a few degrees in some spots, but still really dangerous for the long exposure for a lot of people outside today, tomorrow still hot, saturday possibly even hotter and we're up to 112 degrees in ukiah. a lot of those temperatures will once again remain in the triple digits throughout the weekend, and then start to come down just a little bit for early next week. but taking a look at our 7-day forecast for the inland areas, really not much real relief,
6:20 am
although in the morning hours we may see those temperatures coming down and today in san francisco looks great for all of the outdoor activities, but we'll be in the mid 80s and then back to the low 80s tomorrow. and still some warm weather and some great beach conditions for the weekend and then into early next week. we're dropping it back to the mid 70s. mike, you were hearing about a traffic break. yeah. very concerned. it looks like the chp is not super concerned. after the reports come in south 880 around winton. they are doing a quick traffic break to sweep the area to make sure whatever was reported by someone is no longer a risk. we're looking at this one section with no slowing. again, a traffic break may pause the traffic for safety's sake, heading down to the san mateo bridge. now on the san mateo bridge, we actually, believe it or not, have just over the last 15 minutes seen the traffic volume that i see on the camera. pretty much double. so that's very, very light traffic approaching and crossing that san mateo bridge, dumbarton bridge and anywhere south of

triple digit heat means a shorter window for leaving that food sitting out. whether you are serving traditional burgers and dogs or cold food like salad and fruit, which is what i think sounds good today, experts say you'll want to make sure that food is in the fridge or on ice after just one hour, so that people remember your barbecue and not remember that they got sick. the danger zone is when food has sat out for more than two hours at temperatures of 40 degrees to 140 degrees. after that, two hour window, bacteria grows rapidly inside of the food. however, on the hot summer months like july, and if temperatures are 90 degrees and

know. thanks look, if you're still looking for something to do today, make sure you check out our independence day guide. there's a qr code there on your screen. you can scan that right now. it's going to give you a complete list of all those celebrations, including the parades, the firework shows. and if you're planning on being out in that heat, please remember to stay cool and hydrated out there because it is going to be a hot one. and kari, you've been talking about that too. it's just i mean, look, i said i was telling kris, you probably should have had a 4th of july breakfast or 10:00 dinner. yeah, i think that's about it. i mean, whatever in between. it's just like just cold cuts and salads for the rest of today. no grilling. i want a 4th of july salad. and marcus was like, really? salad on 4th of july. i'm like this one. you can find a way to make it red, white and blue. that would be perfect. yeah. all right. well blueberries are getting creative today. trying to stay cool. and of course you'll need that if you're going out to the parade. we talked about how hot it's
6:41 am
going to be. the parade starting at 9:00. it will be in the low 80s, but heading towards 90 and 94 degrees by the time things wrap up around noon. so it's going to be one where you do have to make sure you're being mindful of your hydration. and for a lot of our inland areas for the middle of the afternoon, it's going to be too hot to be out there just standing over a grill. and then for the evening, we're in the low 80s at 9:00 and then upper 70s. so it will feel a little bit better, but pretty warm compared to our standards and what we're used to. and tonight in san francisco, it's definitely going to be one of the more popular destinations with the cooler weather there, upper 70s during the middle of the day and then you'll need a jacket as the fireworks begin. it will be in the low 60s, making weekend plans going to santa cruz. still very warm there throughout the weekend. some great beach conditions, but be mindful that the water temperature is only in the upper 50s, and we also have the risk of rip currents and some coastal flooding. and then for palisades, it is going to be hot
6:42 am
and tahoe this weekend. we're in the upper 80s and low 90s. over the next several days. mike, you have more info about that wrong-way driver on the nimitz. yeah, horrible report to see in the grid. thankfully no crashes. this is over here as you're coming down through and toward hayward for southbound 880. there actually was a traffic break. it cleared without any major slowing showing up on the maps, but they did intercept a vehicle that was going the wrong way on southbound 880. so incident averted. good stuff. good job, chp, and good job for the rest of the commute. look how light the volume is. so they were able to conduct that traffic break without any major impact to your drive. as we're looking at the bay bridge toll plaza, we don't even have metering lights. we barely have cars. back to you. all right. thank you mike. well, new problems for a disgraced music mogul, sean diddy combs. we have the details emerging on a federal criminal investigation. plus creating renewable energy, not from the wind, but from the ocean waves. a closer look at the new technology that is working to turn waves into green

investigation. a grand jury is hearing evidence which could lead to an indictment for combs. right now, there is no indication that charges are imminent. the u.s. attorney's office and combs attorney did not respond to a request for comment. but this comes after a pair of raids on homes that the rappers, the rapper owns in los angeles and in miami. well one company wants to turn the tide on fossil fuels by focusing on renewable energy from ocean waves, and meteorologist kari hall dives into the potential of creating electricity on our coastlines. water covers 70% of the planet, so it makes sense that we would try to harvest its energy to power our communities. ceo inna braverman and her company, eco wave power, has developed technology that turns waves into green electricity, already powering homes overseas. in israel, we see california is a very strategic location for eco wave power as according to the national renewable energy
6:47 am
laboratory of the united states, in california alone, there is a possibility to produce 69% of all california's energy needs from the power of the waves. the u.s. has over 95,000 miles of shoreline and wave energy may be the wave of the future, powering 130 million homes, according to the u.s. department of energy. but testing marine energy technologies can be difficult and expensive. not only that, moon phases and storm systems impact wave heights, braverman says. eco wave power can adapt when the waves are too high for the system to handle. the floaters automatically go up above the water level, and they stay in the upward position until the storm passes. when the storm passes, they go back into the water and commence operation so the system is very simple, easy cost efficient. and the best part of it that it's truly a renewable energy source. so eco wave power has a vision of installing hundreds of thousands

of wave energy power stations all over the world. and our governor has already greenlighted the project, and some may be installed soon at the port of los angeles. so that's something we'll be watching out for. you can learn more about the technology and other climate change topics on our website. nbcbayarea.com, and click on the climate in crisis tab. all right. thank you kerry. well, let's take a live look for you this morning. this is in san jose where a new water park, calabanga, is opening today. it's going to happen at 11:00 this morning. and just as those temperatures are hitting those triple digits here in the bay area. now this is located at cunningham park in east san jose and nbc bay area ranger flew overhead over the park yesterday. employees there finishing up their final preparations there. you know, the park used to be known as raging waters before suddenly closing last year. new operators originally hoped to open last week. electrical issues led to some delays with that opening, but today is the day. well, i

mean, as long as we get some relief, like some someplace cool to hang out. yeah. so that's what we're doing. we're trying to find those cool places to beat the heat, and we're going to be creative again today as we celebrate the 4th of july. taking a look at our live view in walnut creek, it already looks a lot clearer than it did yesterday at this time. and one of the issues with this heat has been our air quality and the fires that have been burning. this light blue shows that it will be hazy today, but actually clearing out in time for the evening. but a lot of fireworks can worsen our air quality temporarily and locally. so that's something we'll be watching out for. and we're seeing it coming to moderate levels in the amount of the particulate matter, wildfire smoke and ozone pollution. so it's still kind of air quality where you want to limit your time outside. but we're probably doing that anyway because of the heat. and you want to watch out for the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. dizziness, thirstiness, heavy sweating are some of the symptoms of heat exhaustion, a rapid heart rate
6:50 am
or feeling a little weak out there? and then for the heat stroke symptoms, it could be confusion. you stop sweating. you have red, hot, dry skin, rapid, strong pulse and then loss of consciousness, consciousness, all of this severe and a real possibility as we go into now. another day of highs over 90 and over 100 degrees for many of our inland valleys in san francisco, it's going to be in the upper 70s and low 80s. for san mateo, it's good that we do still have some spots with some mild weather, because a lot of people in the inland areas away from the coastline have been dealing with some very dangerous heat that extends not only into tomorrow, but saturday, as well. take a look at all of those high temperatures that are still unbearable for day after day. that continues into sunday as well. our overnight temperatures have been giving us some slight relief with some mid 60s, and then will be in the upper 90s throughout the middle of next week. looking at san francisco here today, we'll reach a high
6:51 am
of 84 in parts of the city and low 80s extend into the weekend, then some mid 70s in the forecast for the beginning of next week. mike, you were hearing about a fire in the south bay and we're hearing about fires spotting fires alongside the roadway. this one happened to be within the area that we have with our camera here. don't see any smoke. we're going to track that. of course we track all the little reports. do report anything. if you see anything going on as far as smoke or fire risk, high potential, but low traffic flow, that's the good news for the traffic volume. a note because it's 4th of july, it's a holiday service for many of these agencies, about half of transit agencies reporting a sunday service, others reporting no service. so do check your transit agency's website. but a note bart is extending their service because of the fireworks in san francisco along the embarcadero. so that extends through midnight with three lines, three line service back to you. thank you mike. happening now about 30,000 california homeowners are starting to lose their insurance policies provided by one of the state's largest companies. as of

this week, state farm is dropping policies in some of the areas at highest risk of fire danger. orinda is one bay area city expected to really be hit hard. the company first announced its decision back in the spring, and this move is the latest example of insurers pulling back coverage, citing growing costs and increased risk from california disasters. so what can you do if your policy is dropped? our nbc bay area response team made a video with what you can do to protect yourself. you can find that at nbc bay area on our youtube page. and coming up a look at our top stories here on today in the bay, including the word of a heat related death in the south bay and firefighters on high alert today, the extreme heat and concerns about illegal fireworks. this 4th of july. of course, that's fueling higher fire risk. we're going to have a look at the crackdowns now in place to lower those risks forwa

still warn even those can be dangerous. and this year, conditions like triple digit heat and dry vegetation, they can really add to the danger. that is why cal fire says leave the fireworks to the professionals. later on in san francisco, thousands of people are expected to line the embarcadero. tonight, you'll see a different look at san francisco's skyline. it will be all lit up for the annual fireworks show now. yesterday crews spent the day loading up two barges at pier 30, getting ready for the show. the show's producer says that they've been planning the display for months now. some cancellations, as you mentioned, chris, including those in the north bay, both saint helena and healdsburg are canceling their fireworks shows due to red flag conditions. the 4th of july parade in antioch is canceled as well, and that is because of the heat. but events set for the evening will go as planned. so if you are still looking for something to do, check out the independence day guide. you can scan our qr code
