july 4th with the massive independence day celebrations across the country. here's a live look at hollywood beach, florida, where they are expecting a high today of 88. and oh, by the way, that's a downright pleasant temperature compared to some places this morning. >> more than 100 million under some kind of heat advisory today, conditions so extreme in some areas, communities are actually being forced to cancel their events because of heat and other extreme weather. all of it as millions of people are traveling for one of the busiest weeks ever. meanwhile, hurricane beryl battering jamaica overnight, after leading a deadly trail of destruction through the caribbean. its path now uncertain, with texas authorities warning residents in coastal areas there to be prepared over the holiday weekend. we've got a live report from jamaica in just a few moments. dylan's got the full forecast, as well. but let's start with emilie ikeda. she's in coney island. emilie, good morning to you. >> reporter: guys, good morning to you and happy 4th of july. we know millions of americans are seeking refuge from the

heat, in some places, triple-digit temperatures in places like this, the beach. but the biggest celebrations will happen when the sun goes down and fireworks displays light up the skies across the country. authorities say there are no credible threats, but here in new york city, they acknowledge the complicated environment in recent months and say they are rolling out the largest police presence ever for july 4th, hoping for a safe and spectacular holiday. with just hours to go before fireworks light up the night skies, many americans are waking up to a holiday heat wave. more than 100 million under heat alerts this july 4th. a stifling heat also fueling wildfires in california. thousands evacuating in orville. with warnings in other parts of the state ahead of the holiday. while across the country, final preparations are underway, to celebrate america's independence. the fbi and department of homeland security telling local police to stay vigilant during large celebrations, and that the biggest threat comes from lone wolves.

but according to a law enforcement source, the bulletin meant for new york was not sent out nationwide, and there are no credible terror threats for the holiday. in new york city, a 25-minute fireworks show will take place over the hudson river for the . the nypd says that it will have a strong presence deployed to keep viewing areas secured. >> the men and women of the nypd will be out there. >> reporter: it comes as nearly 71 million are traveling this week according to aaa, which says, expects lots of company, whether you're hitting the highways -- >> i hate traffic. >> reporter: -- or flying to your vacation getaway, though the record-setting season is not without travel headaches. a flight headed to amsterdam wednesday was diverted to jfk because of spoiled food served on board. delta apologized to its customers. ♪♪ ♪ we are family ♪ overnight in washington, a dress rehearsal for the capitol's july 4th celebration, expected to

bring a huge crowd to the national mall for music, and of course, the fireworks, where a family business now in its fourth generation has been designing the colorful display over d.c.'s iconic landmarks for more than a decade. >> it's an epic moment. and it never gets old. >> reporter: and of course, the largest fireworks show playing out in the country here in the new york city area. it's expected to run 25 minutes long, using tens of thousands of shells. officials reminding people who are lighting their own fireworks to do so safely. you want to keep a water hose or a bucket of water nearby. always light one firework at a time. and they say never try to re-light a firework or pick one up that hasn't fully ignited. craig, i think i'll just sit back, let the professionals do it, probably grab a hot dog, too. >> probably a good idea. emilie ikeda for us on coney island. thank you. and heat, of course, isn't the only weather we're tracking this morning. the island of jamaica is taking stock of its losses today after staring down hurricane beryl, now on a path toward mexico and

possibly even texas. nbc's sam brock has the latest from kingston, where he and his team rode out the storm. sam, good morning. >> reporter: laura, good morning we are in kingston where the damage was limited largely because beryl didn't get close enough to inflict hurricane-force winds. laura, we are getting confirmation this morning from jamaica's police force, two deaths on the island directly attributable to the storm that is a figure we largely expect to rise as the communication systems right now just coming back on line. >> reporter: after waiting for days for its arrival, beryl roared over jamaica. it didn't land a solid punch in kingston. still, with winds reaching 140 miles an hour at its core, even a glancing blow was enough to stun. >> driving is near impossible.

>> reporter: this morning, the full toll of beryl's fury on the island is still being assessed. steady rain and a storm surge did leave streets underwater and strong winds threatened to create mass power outages, as we saw firsthand. even though the wind speeds were not the 100-plus-mile-per-hour gusts that we were worried about coming in here in kingston, it was still about 60 to 70 miles an hour, strong enough to bend power poles and knock out electricity to many. the dominican republic and haiti also managed to avoid the full brunt of the storm. with jamaica fresh in its wake beryl took aim at the cayman islands overnight, continuing its devastating rampage across the caribbean. hurricane beryl ended up maintaining the major category status 4 or 5 for 80 plus consecutive hours. just a stunning number there. as we look forward, cameron county, texas, already seeing voluntary evacuations as beryl's next stops in its path, mexico and potentially the united states. >> sam brock, thank you. >> let's turn to dylan now. she's in for al this morning.

she has more on beryl's path and the big 4th of july forecast. >> still lets to talk about. let's show you where this storm is headed. it's sitting south of the cayman islands and currently a category 3 hurricane with winds up to 120 miles per hour. this is going to remain over the water and approach the yucatan peninsula in mexico. we have hurricane warnings posted right now as the storm is expected to stay just to the south of cozumel, but as it moves back into the gulf of mexico, it's going to approach brownsville, texas, and there's the chance we could see some really heavy rain going into monday night and tuesday morning along with some very gusty winds, too. we also have the heat to talk about, out west and down south. now, down across parts of the gulf coast, that's where we have the heat and the humidity. it's a bad combination to try to keep yourself cool. that's why you have to really just stay indoors during that peak point of the day where the heating is highest, right around lunchtime. we are expecting our heat index to feel like it's about 110 degrees. out west, we're looking at that dry heat but a prolonged heat. days and days and days of temperatures up to 110, to 115

degrees, actual air temperatures. over into the eastern part of the country, we're looking for temperatures to warm up even more, monday, nashville will be in the mid-90s. craig? >> dylan, thanks. we'll come back to you in just a few moments. turning to politics now, where president biden is rushing to calm fears within his own party after new calls for him to drop out of the race following that shaky debate performance. we are breaking it all down this morning, starting with nbc's senior white house correspondent, gabe gutierrez. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: hey there, laura. good morning. one week after that disastrous debate, president biden is facing a political crisis within his own party. multiple sources tell nbc news that in recent conversations with aides, family members, and allies outside the white house, the president has been torn between acceptance and defiance. this morning, president biden is not backing down, telling his staff, let me say this as clearly as i possibly can, as simply and straightforward as i can. i am running. in a new radio interview, the

president again acknowledging his brutal debate performance. >> i had a bad night. the fact of the matter is that, you know, it was -- i screwed up. i made a mistake. that's 90 minutes on stage. look at what i've done in 3.5 years. >> reporter: but nbc news has learned that privately, president biden is torn. in some discussions, he's acknowledged that the debate aftermath may grow too large to overcome, while in others, he has been completely dismissive of the idea of dropping out of the campaign, according to four people familiar with the matter. the president weighing his instinct and the advice of his family to stay in against calls to step out. he can see that there is potentially no real path, a source told nbc, but he's being pushed. still, publicly, the white house staying the course. >> he's moving forward with his campaign. he is staying in the race. i just stated that the president has -- is not dropping out. >> reporter: overnight, the president and vice president meeting with democratic governors at the white house. >> we've pledged our support to

him, because the stakes could not be higher. >> reporter: that came after a day of reaching out to top congressional leaders, a second house democrat, arizona's raul grijalva, calling on president biden to drop out and another democratic congressman seth moulten saying all viable options should be on the table. ♪♪ at his only public event wednesday, a medal of honor ceremony, the president ignoring reporters' questions. >> mr. president. >> mr. president. >> reporter: a "new york times"/siena college poll done after the debate suggests that president biden now trails former president trump by six points among likely voters, though that's within the margin of error. former president trump in a video shared on a social media site falsely claims that president biden quit the campaign, and attacks vice president kamala harris with profanity. >> he just quit, you know, he's quitting. is that right? >> yeah, i got him out. and that means we have kamala. i think she's going to be better. she's so bad.

she's so pathetic. >> it's so amazing. >> she's so [ bleep ] bad. >> reporter: the biden campaign is blasting former president trump this morning for, quote, demeaning the vice president, adding that he's hit a new rock bottom. the next few days are being viewed as critical for president biden. tomorrow, he travels to battleground wisconsin for a rally and does his first lengthy tv interview after the debate. many congressional democrats will be watching that closely, laura. >> all right, gabe. thanks for your reporting. >> let's bring in nbc's senior washington correspondent, hallie jackson for a little bit more on this now. hallie, good morning to you. so, we heard about this call between the president and democratic governors, president biden insisting that he is in it to win it. but hallie, i mean, what at this point can the president, can this administration realistically do to win over the skeptics at this point? >> it's a great question, craig. and the answer seems to be, to give it some time and to get the president out there. a campaign source tells me overnight that they believe that the governor's meeting and some

of the public support we saw after that demonstrates what they see as united front of those elected leaders rallying around president biden. look at governor gavin newsom, for example. he's speculated to be a future presidential candidate. he says he plans to headline events in michigan, in new hampshire this holiday weekend. but remember, for some of these other skeptical democrats, it really is less about what the campaign says president biden can do, craig, and more about seeing and hearing from the president himself himself, seeing where the polls go, and seeing what donors do. >> hallie, despite the public displays of support, perhaps, what's really going on down underneath, though, are some real cracks in the coalition. >> yeah, you're absolutely right, laura. let's talk about a couple of different buckets here. three of them. voters, lawmakers, donors. start with the voter. you heard those poll numbers that gabe ran through, showing some slippage for president biden, possibly a warning sign. the campaign has pushed back hard. they suggest that their internal polling shows that this race remains very close. it's too soon to get a clear

picture of where things are. but one of the democratic lawmakers that's called on president bide on the step aside tells me that he has overwhelmingly heard from his constituents that they do not want to see the president at the top of the ticket. that's anecdotal, that's one instance. but keep in mind that there are now three house democrats, members of congress calling on the president to withdraw. you've got other looking at not just the poll numbers, but also where the donors go. there's a crack on that front, too. you now have the cofounder of netflix, who's given millions of dollars to democrats joining those calling for the president to come off the ticket. we're talking about reed hastings. in an email to the "new york times," he says the president should step aside to allow, in his words, a vigorous democratic leader, to take on president trump. laura? >> hallie, really quickly, before we let you get out of here. let's talk about the former president. minus that video of we just saw of him in the golf cart there, it does seem as if he's keeping a lower profile in the wake of a debate win, in the wake of some legal victories, as well. what's the strategy here? >> so his top advisers, craig,

have been saying publicly since thursday night that they do not think that president biden is going anywhere, notwithstanding what you heard from the former president in that video. they think he is not going to choose to drop out. that "new york times"/siena poll shows 30% of likely republican voters thinks that president biden should remain the democratic nominee. see those numbers, that's up 8% since the debate. as for mr. trump, he's going to hold a rally in florida on monday, right in the middle of all of this vp running mate speculation, and another in pennsylvania later this week before that national convention. look at this pig picture for the former president. his opponent is in the midst of a political crisis. he, himself, just got a legal win from the supreme court, and he's into two-week period where he'll announce his running mate and see his own party celebrate him for four days in milwaukee. still, in some of my conversations with people in mr. trump's orbit, they've pointed out there is still a ways to go until november and a lot of work to do. >> hallie jackson, happy fourth to you. and in politics across the pond, british voters head to the

polls in the country's first parliamentary election in five years. and it's widely expected to usher out over a new decade of conservative power there, with voter concerns about the economy, health care, and britain's crumbling infrastructure. the current prime minister there is facing challenges for the country's top job, with his top rival being keir starmer. voting closes at 5:00 eastern time tonight. from the uk to france, an exciting to end the tour de france. the fifth stage yesterday, veteran right mark cavendish breaking through the pack for a record breaking 35th stage win. >> mark kafen dish diving through the line, looking for a lead. a crash. >> cavendish is coming to the line. it is win number 35. >> what a did, indeed. this is likely the 39-year-old's final appearance in cycling's biggest race, after a decorated

bananas, as familiar franchises make their return to the big screen. insiders dubbing this the summer of sequels with new installments of "despicable me," "inside out," "bad boys," and "quiet place." all already making a lot of noise. despite some sneering at hollywood's slew of back flash flicks. >> i knew i did not need another "bad boys" movie. >> did you guys notice there's no new films anymore? >> reporter: while the big follow-up films are easing some nerves for the industry after a dismal start to the season -- >> hello. >> reporter: early summer box office numbers from com score have this year behind 2023's pace. and with the barbenheimer phenomenon propelling those to theaters, this year could see a more than 4 billion in revenue, movie experts say this summer could see an estimated $600 million dip. it comes as studios are looking for creative ways to lure in audiences. even streaming giant netflix is hoping their immersive netflix houses which are set to open next year will get subscribers

off the couch. >> i've got this! >> reporter: all pumping up the pressure for sequels to save the summer. >> is it safe to say that sequels could turn the summer box office around? >> absolutely! clearly, audiences love sequels, though they may not want to say it out loud, they actually do when we look at the numbers and see what's popular at the multi-plex. >> reporter: experts say the biggest blockbusters may still be to come. >> who's next? >> reporter: with "deadpool" and "wolverine" and "twisters" set to premiere later this month. but for now, there's hope that this long holiday weekend will lead to a box office boom. >> there will be fireworks at the multi-plex this weekend for sure. this is the time that people want to see the familiar. 4th of july is going to deliver big. >> okay, what happens if it dun doesn't deliver wig? what happens if it's underwhelming? >> okay, well, the hope is that all of these movies and these sequels are going to really boost the box office numbers, because we got off to that slow start at the beginning of the summer. but i'm sure you've heard of

no real widespread tornado threat with these two areas where we could see some of those storms. but for your day today, keep an eye to the sky. if you do see storms pass through, you want to run inside until they pass. it's very hot and humid down south. out west, it's hot and dry with the record-high temperatures lasting all through the weekend and into at least the middle of next week. fireworks tonight, out west, it will be dry. fireworks could be dangerous because of the dry condition. then we're going to see scattered showers and storms. that does go for tonight's fireworks in new york city. there's a small chance we could see some of those storms begin to develop around 9:00 tonight.

1 storm and bringing a lot of rain expected to southern texas. we have extreme heat, dangerous heat out west. we're looking at record-breaking heat to last through at least the middle of next week, and down south where we have our heat warnings in effect, it's more because of the heat and humidity that makes it very uncomfortable and dangerous to be outside for too long. memphis will feel like 113, baton rouge will feel like 109. out west, fresno will be at 110 degrees, staying there for several days. phoenix, 116 degrees. and that heat is going to stretch up into nashville, up into washington, d.c., all through the rest of the weekend. in d.c., we should be staying in the mid-90s. laura? >> dylan, thank you. now to politics, where president biden is not backing down, seeking to calm fears within his own party after new calls for him to drop out of the 2024 race, following that shaky debate performance. we have new nbc news reporting and nbc news senior white house correspondent gabe gutierrez is following it all. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: hey, peter, good morning. president biden is rushing to

reassure his campaign staff, bluntly telling them, i am running. but nbc news has learned that privately, the president is torn and in some discussions, he's acknowledged the debate aftermath may grow too large to overcome, while in others, he's been completely dismissive of the idea of dropping out. that's according to four people familiar with the matter. he can see that there is potentially no real path, a source told nbc, but he's being pushed. again, publicly, the white house is emphatically saying that he's staying in. a "new york times" siena college poll done after the debate suggests that president biden now trails former president trump by six points among liable likely voter, although that's within the margin of error. last night, the president and vice president met with democratic governors here at the white house. earlier in the day, the president reached out to top congressional leaders, as he tries to hold the party together. a second house democrat is now calling on president biden to drop out and many others are watching how the president

she's got her life jacket on, it looks like. hey, vick, good morning. >> hey, good morning, guys. happy 4th of july. wish you were out here paddleboarding with me and my buddy penny here. listen, whether your plans include being on the water, or maybe you're doing an old-fashioned barbecue, i've got some summer reminders so you can have a safe and fun celebration. the summer heat wave is well underway this holiday, as americans stay cool by the pool, including my three daughters, emerson, odessa, and runly. and this is a great time of year for a water safety refresh. so let's start with bathing suits, and i don't mean fashion swim safety experts say avoid buying your children bathing suits that are green, blue, or white, because they disappear under the water. wait until you see what happens when odessa is swimming at the bottom of the pool in the blue bathing suit versus a brightly colored one like a yellow one. you can see her so much better. and in the middle of all of the water fun, make sure you designate a responsible adult to be the water watcher, and if you can, have a first aid kit

nearby, too. and these floats the girls are using, they're super cute, a lot of fun, but they are not rescue devices. kids can easily tip out, fall out, get stuck under one of the floaties. make sure you have that adult always watching the water. but if there is an emergency and someone's not breathing, call 911 and perform hands-only cpr. here's what the american heart association recommends. first, find the center of the person's chest, put the heel of your hand there, interlock your fingers, and keep your elbows locked. start compressions, they should be about 100 to 120 per minute. >> you can remember that by singing "staying alive" in your head. consider becoming cpr certified. you can find your local training courses online. and if your 4th of july plans include any boating fun, don't forget, everyone onboard needs to have a life jacket that's u.s. coast guard approved. girls, ready? and don't forget, the baby needs

good morning to you. it is 856 a marcus washington. we're continuing to follow that breaking news in butte county. and a wildfire that has now grown to 3500 acres. now, a short time ago, firefighters did provide an update in this morning. first sign of progress. that fire, now 7% contained at least four homes are destroyed. another 12,000 are threatened, and 28,000 people have been forced from their homes with more homes under evacuation warnings. now, governor newsom has already issued a state of emergency and a new water park. kiley bonta, is opening today at 11:00 this morning in san jose, just as those temperatures are hitting the triple digits in the bay area located over at cunningham park in east san jose, nbc bay area sky ranger flying over the park yesterday. you may remember it by its former name, raging waters. this was before it suddenly closed last year. the new operators hope to open last week, but
