5:00 am
ends with a bang as people set off thousands of illegal
5:01 am
fireworks all across the bay area, and some sparked brushfires that kept firefighters on alert overnight. we are tracking the continuing high fire risk and record heat into the weekend. plus, calming concerns president biden assuring voters that he is fit for office as he continues to face pressure to drop out. we're live from washington with how biden plans to convince not only voters, but leaders within his own party. this is today in the bay. and good morning to you. on this friday, i'm marcus washington, and i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for laura garcia. it has been a brutally hot week, and it's not over yet, but meteorologist kari hall is tracking the temperatures for today and beyond. and i think finally, we're starting to see something in the long term forecast. yeah, we'll have to look way into next week before we get some real relief, but at least we do for much of the bay area. start out with our cooler mornings, and right now we're at
5:02 am
69 degrees in san jose. it's 63 in dublin, and we're in the mid 60s for concord. look at the north bay, santa rosa starting out at 54 degrees and 59, in sonoma and in napa. so it is a nice refreshing start to the day. compared to what's ahead. we're back up to the upper 90s in the north bay 101 for santa rosa, concord, 106 degrees, 102 for livermore and 92 for san jose. we are going to have another hot one. while it's going to be mild in san francisco, san mateo in the upper 70s, and then looking at tomorrow, also that wide range in temperatures going from mid 70s all the way up to 113 degrees. that's what we'll see tomorrow in ukiah. so we'll continue to track this heat and we'll take a look at that distant forecast. and when those numbers come down in a few minutes, mike, you're tracking something on the rails. yeah, it sounds very similar to what we had last week. and no red line service. it sounds like there's an equipment issue trackside
5:03 am
issue reported may have been related to the overnight maintenance crews out there. whatever the case, you have to make a transfer if you normally would use the red line getting over toward the millbrae area, you'll transfer over at the macarthur station. the signs overhead will give you a little more detail, and we'll give you a little more detail once we get that from bart as well. now, you can hit the roads. there are easy, clear highways now around the bay. as you would imagine, but again, no red line service now directly taking you from over in the east bay over to millbrae. you'll have to transfer at macarthur back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, those hot temperatures we've been experiencing keeping fire crews alert and busy with the fires around the bay area overnight. now, in antioch, crews put out a brush fire. this is burning on lotus street near hillcrest. firefighters at that scene last night working near what looks like the backyard of a home. now, a fence on that property appeared to be damaged, and it's unclear if the fire was started by fireworks. we do have a crew there on the scene. of course we're going to bring you more information as we get it this morning. now to a live look at the scene of another brush
5:04 am
fire that is now out in san jose. this is east of almaden in the boulder ridge area. crews do remain on scene, but you can see there the flames are now out, but at its peak, this is what it looked like last night. firefighters told people to avoid that area, but again, it appears to be clear now. no structures were threatened and the night sky lit up across the bay area for the 4th of july. and at least in the video you're seeing none of this was legal. in some cases, illegal fireworks led to brush fires and tense moments for residents. and then in one case, the mishap at a scheduled event was followed by some very tense moments in the south bay today in the bay's ginger conejero saab live for us this morning and ginger things could have really gotten a lot worse in this case, right? that's right, marcus and chris. and thankfully it did not. firefighters got a hold of things very quickly, but what it does show is just how fast things can change with our current conditions. now let's talk about the professional
5:05 am
fireworks show in san jose got started around 920 last night at lake cunningham park. people were enjoying it, but then a few minutes in, their attention turned to a small brush fire on the hill. crews got that out quickly, but then more flames popped up in a few other spots. council member domingo candelas was there at the show and says they were prepared, with firefighters standing by. that's why we do these events with the firefighters on hand so they can be able to respond to, you know, small little fires, little brush fires that happen. obviously that's not what we want. but you know what? prepare for the worst. well, part of the reason this event was planned was so there would be less of an incentive for people to use illegal fireworks. now, we know that incentive doesn't always work. illegal fireworks are suspected of starting another fire in martinez in near central avenue, you can see fireworks were even going off above the flames as crews rushed to get
5:06 am
the fire under control. firefighters say about three acres burned there. now, as we go into the weekend, fire crews remain on alert because we do know there are still hot conditions, hot temperatures and of course the fireworks. they don't just stay or they don't just happen on 4th of july. they happen prior to the holiday as well as after in in the east bay ginger conejero saab today in the bay. all right. yeah. i heard some coming in this morning at 330. you and me both. nbc bay area app. great way to stay informed on that high fire risk. you can get up to the minute updates sent straight to your phone for any weather alerts or breaking news alerts, and you can download it for free for all devices. well, the 4th of july holiday not interrupting the race for the white house. this is as the decision 2024 continues. now, president biden continues to face pressure. this is after his poor showing of performance there at the first presidential debate with former president donald trump. biden is asking voters to focus on his
5:07 am
three and a half years of accomplishments. not just that one night saying sometimes you just have a bad night now. meanwhile, donald trump remains on the attack today in the bay's brie jackson joins us live from washington, brie president biden is really trying to ease those concerns. he is. that's right. good morning, chris marcus. so president biden suggested to his allies that he may limit evening events in order to get more sleep. and he's ramping up his activity this week or this month, rather now this as the president faces questions about his ability to win in november. president biden, celebrating the 4th of july holiday at the white house honoring the country's past, present and future. decades later, we must look at ourselves and ask the question, will we stand for freedom again? we stand for democracy. we stand together as americans. i believe we will and we can. questions
5:08 am
remain about the president's political future. following his poor performance at the first presidential debate, former president trump, seizing on the criticism and sharing this vide, making the false claim that biden is quitting the race, he just quit. you know, he's quitting the race a few democrats have publicly called on biden to step aside, including congressman lloyd doggett. most continue to show support while also expressing concerns. i think we have to take it day by day. we've got to see the president get out there, show that he's got the stamina, talk to rectly, to the american people. the american public is divided. i love joe and i love kamala, especially. my concern is, yes, like everybody else age. but the bottom line is i can't vote for the other guy consciously. if joe biden is on the ballot in november, i think that bodes better for trump. but
5:09 am
i do think he's incapable. the president insists he's staying in the race. you got me, man. i'm not going anywhere. the biden-harris ticket is heading into a critical stretch for their campaign, seeking to convince voters and donors that biden is fit for office. and today, president biden is scheduled to campaign in wisconsin. he'll also sit down for his first televised interview since the debate. marcus kris all right. we'll be waiting to see what happens there. i mean, we're hanging on every word really at this point. thank you. so much. brie. it's 508 for you, right now, taking a live look in san francisco, getting started with the weekend. that doesn't look too bad there. i know right? that's like i'm not too bad there. yeah, it does look nice and cool. we're even seeing the return of fog over the bay. so this is a look at a wide view from our sutro tower camera that's going to cool off the temperatures in the city, but we
5:10 am
are still looking at some upper 70s there, just a few degrees shy of a record. take a look at santa rosa's forecast for today and what the record was in 2020. so it's going to be even hotter today than it was in 2020. that's the possibility. and we'll be very close in livermore, in san jose, i do think will stay well below that record that was set back in 1905. so still a hot day. we'll talk about the weekend coming up in a few minutes. mike's been looking around and find us some lower gas prices. yeah, some folks leaving, some folks staying and some people just moving around. this friday for the weekend, a popular price point is on the state's leader list. it's 385. it's a lot of places, but we're focusing on cupertino, car wash on north deanza boulevard. that's the best we have in the bay. no others under four bucks in the east bay, we have concord, which got the lowest with 404 at dimond gas and mart on oak grove road and on the peninsula san mateo county's low is in burlingame. it's 419. that's the best we could find there. a and a gas on broadway when we say best we could find, we find it

on gasbuddy.com. on the roadways, you'll find a smooth drive. the issue is the ride on the rails. no red line service right now between richmond and millbrae. you will have to transfer at the macarthur station. there will be overhead signs posting the transfer information, and that is continuing probably throughout the day. it sounds like a similar problem we had last week, although we don't have those details right now. again, red line service bridging between richmond and millbrae. you're going to have to transfer at macarthur back to you. all right. good to know. thanks, mike. well san francisco's open. i hacked, but the company they're not worrying. yeah. next year on today in the bay. we're going to give you those details on information. hackers managed to obtain and why. so far, openai is not calling this a

for another hot day in santa clara. we're starting out with some upper 60s, and we'll be right at 70 degrees at 8:00. and seeing those temperatures heating up again very quickly as we head toward noon, it's going to be hot not only today, but the next few days. we'll take a look into next week to see if we find some relief coming up. and not only today, but the last few days we've had very light traffic flow. here's the richmond bridge heading over towards san rafael. we missed the one car we've seen in the last 60s there is still traffic, but out of richmond to millbrae there is an issue on the bart line. no red line service continues because of a trackside
5:15 am
issue. we'll continue to follow that. we'll explain more coming up. sepulveda now, from cnbc. let's start with wall street. it's set for a flood open as investors return from the 4th of july holiday and ahead of the big economic news of the week. it's the jobs report and it's expected to show hiring slowed in june with unemployment holding steady at 4. now that, combined with the recent run of subdued data, could open the door for the federal reserve to cut interest rates this year. now, minutes from the fed's most recent meeting signaling they're in no rush to lower rates, the dow, the nasdaq and the s&p 500 are on track for a positive week with the nasdaq and the s&p at fresh record highs. a pair of buyout firms are reportedly raising their takeover offer for macy's to just under $7 billion. now the wall street journal says arkhouse management and brigade capital would be buying shares of the department store they
5:16 am
don't already own. macy's ended a board fight with those firms in april by adding two of their nominees to the board in may. macy's reported sales fell in the first quarter, but less than wall street expected, and a hacker got access to openai's internal messaging system last year and stole details about the company's technology. the new york times reports. the hacker lifted the information from an online forum but didn't get into the systems where openai, that's the maker of chatgpt houses and build its artificial intelligence, the company told employees and the board about the breach, but decided not to share the news publicly as no information about customers or partners was stolen. it also didn't believe the breach was a national security threat. guys it's always we talk about open ai. we love it in one way. but then another way you're like, oh. and then here's another
5:17 am
thing. i wonder yes i know, i know. it's the sort of love hate thing with it. yeah. i wonder if the hackers used openai. like, how do you hack into. yeah. oh, that's a good one. well, maybe good. thanks, alana. well, as you plan your weekend, we have to tell you that some bay area parks are still off limits because of the ongoing heat and fire danger. east bay regional parks district tells us they are going to keep some of their parks closed. at least through today. we can also tell you that the anthony chabot campground will be closed through the weekend. other destinations could open tomorrow, but the good news is swim centers and parks that are along the shoreline where it's nice and cool. those will remain open. all right, it's time to get a look at that forecast for us. of course, we have been talking about it's hot in some places. then you go some places and it's nice and cool. yeah, i think the coast is going to be one of those nice and cool places that we'll see over the weekend as we take a look at where we're starting this morning, it is already warm at 69 degrees in
5:18 am
san jose. we're used to mid 50s, so this does feel warm to us. and we're at 52 in san rafael in dublin it's now at 66 degrees and we're starting out the morning in san francisco at 55. let's head to pacifica, because i do think the coastline is going to be so popular after a scorcher of a weekend, we're going to see those temperatures there in the low 60s. throughout the morning at noontime, it's 65 degrees, and we are going to see those temperatures reach about 66 degrees and hold steady for several hours. and then seeing the fog returning later. this evening to cool things off once again as the wind picks up. so once again, a lot of people are trying to escape the dangerous heat. it feels like it's been forever dealing with these hot temperatures. and so you're thinking, what is normal for early july in santa rosa? we're used to seeing temperatures at about 84 degrees. but today we're going to hit a high of
5:19 am
101. and that may set a new record in concord 106 today. that's very much above average. and in san francisco also. well above average. we should be in the upper 60s today. it will be 79, 102 in livermore and 92 in san jose. so we're seeing the widespread heat once again that may get slightly more intense tomorrow for some of those inland valleys and vacaville. we'll see a high tomorrow afternoon up to 107. it's not backing off for much of the east bay, as well as the south bay, but the coastline is going to be one of the places where we do see some much milder weather, with some upper 70s throughout the weekend in san francisco in morgan hill, we're dealing with this extreme heat that will ease up a bit for sunday, but once again, this is still hot, still above average, and we're going to see that extend into the middle to end of next week. so we are instead of seeing highs over 100 degrees, we'll see highs in the 90s through next
5:20 am
week. yay hey in the low 60s for the early morning hours and san francisco is going to return to the 70s for the start of next week. mike, you're seeing a delay for some crossing the bay. yeah, but it's not for folks driving the bay bridge that's moving very smoothly. right now across i-80. drivers are fine both back and forth between the city and the east bay. the issue is on the red line. if you were planning on taking the red line this morning, you will not. similar to last week, there's no red line service, but you can make a transfer at the macarthur station so you can get on board the train at your normal start point. you'll transfer over if you're going to millbrae or if you're coming back from sfo, you'll have to make a transfer as well. the signs will post the details, but basically you're going to have to make that bridge point at the macarthur station over here. now traffic on the roadway is very light today, right now, and probably continuing through much of the morning, not seeing any major issues, although there's a little slowing on the incline at the bay bridge. so there probably more traffic than
5:21 am
yesterday when there was almost none visible on some of the cameras. south bay along the peninsula and easy drive over even out of here. look at the altamont pass, just like yesterday. no slowing shows up on 580 coming out of the altamont. so that does indicate that we're looking at at least light traffic for a while. back to you. thank you. mike. 520 and next year on today in the bay nbc bay area responds a company sold him a new phone, plus the promise of an $800 credit. but nearly a year later, nada. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura, nbc bay of july

people with preexisting conditions. to me, heat exhaustion is kind of the warning signal. you know, in the car when you have the coolant alarm go off, but the car is still functioning, you want to do something before the car doesn't work and you can't do anything about it. and heat stroke, no matter how hard you try to cool someone, it's very difficult. and you're going to get impact on the heart, the lungs and the kidneys. so if you are seeing signs of heat exhaustion, try to cool down. have people drink water, maybe use ice packs. but if you think that somebody suffering from that more serious heat stroke, you have to call 911. heat stroke can have long term impacts on the heart and the kidneys, so make sure don't exercise out in the heat today. all right. well look a live look for you in san francisco a place where it's not so hot. this is over at the chase center this morning where basketball fans this weekend will get a first glimpse of the future of the warriors and three other teams the lakers, kings and miami

going to la this weekend, it's a little warm. not too bad. we'll be in the 80s there around downtown la. and mike, you continue that alert for bart riders. we do carry. it sounds the same as last week, but it's the same area or same line affected but not the same issue. so they're hoping to get some track repair work done in time for some restoration of red line service. right now, no red line running that will take you between richmond and millbrae. you can still take that same journey, but you'll make a transfer over at the macarthur station, heading to the peninsula. coming back from the peninsula, you'll board a train getting over toward richmond, but you'll make again the transfer. i'm sorry you make it a train transfer at macarthur as well. watch those overhead signs. they'll explain more as the situation evolves. now you can hit the roads. it's an easier light drive for now. at the bay bridge toll plaza. just mild slowing on the incline. and that's just because there are a few more cars than you have. half the lanes. look at that. just a little tiny bit. not even any slowing anymore. there's a crash clearing from the san

connected to the start of the fire, and the fire in question was quickly put out. meantime, authorities lifted some of the evacuation orders tied to the thomson fire, which has now burned more than 3700 acres. the fire is also about 30% contained, so that's an improvement from yesterday. at least four homes were destroyed. evacuation orders also in effect now from a wildfire that doubled in size in mariposa county near yosemite. this one started about 630 last night along highway 49 in mariposa. overnight cal fire says it grew to 800 acres. it is burning out of control. no word on a cause just yet. well, it is hard to make it in the bay, especially with a college student in the family. but there is still time to get some scholarship help ahead of the fall semester. despite okay, so listen to this kris. despite popular belief, summer is not too late to apply for those scholarships. okay, scholarship aggregator this is al estimates

that it has more than half $1 million that are available now to students willing to put a little time filling out those applications. so they're not all based on academic performance either. okay. there's actually a lot of money they're leaving on the table. summer is a great time to apply for scholarships because they're less busy. you know, they don't have classes. and on top of that, you know, a lot of other students are not applying. so it's a great time for students to get in there and get some last minute dollars available for that all important tuition bill coming in august. good to know. so scholarship al offers a free seven day trial of services that include customized recommendations, automatic reapplication, and that the scholarship to make sure that they are legit for you. now more information. all you have to do is go to scholarship al.com for that. you already know about that site. guess what my graduate is going to do for the next seven days? lots of. all

right. it turns out that the giants are heating up right along with the weather. the team suddenly playing some of its best baseball of the season, the atlanta braves in atlanta. no problem. matt chapman hit a solo shot in the fourth inning, which would give the giants the lead as they beat the braves 4 to 2 and win the series. the giants are now just two games below 500. well, the a's may be looking up to rest of the division, but you know what? sure did not look that way against the angels yesterday over at the coliseum, jp spears pitched five shutout innings. the a's did all of the scoring there, and they actually won the game five. nothing for a three game game sweep of anaheim. the a's going to try to keep things rolling tonight over at the coliseum as well. that's when the league's best team, baltimore orioles, are coming to town. o r i o l e s i'm going to get beat up. you're brave, you're brave? okay. all right. the next story for you right no.

551. so happening tomorrow it is free fishing day, so you don't need to have a license to fish here in california. the california department of fish and wildlife says that it's a day for people to try a new hobby or even, you know, reinvigorate a love of fishing. but it is not a total free for all fish and wildlife. they actually say that all regulations remain in effect regarding the fishing hours. bag or size limits, report card requirements and steam closures, as well as gear restrictions. now, if you miss this one, there's another fishing day coming up for you. this summer. it's going to be august 31st. i mean, you're going to need some deep water because those fish are going to be way below the surface. all right. who needs coney island anyway? the greatest competitive eater of all time, san jose's joey chestnut, took his talents to texas on the 4th of july to eat hot dogs with soldiers. chestnu.
5:53 am
joey chestnut went to fort bliss in el paso, texas to chow down on some hot dogs, as is his tradition. on the 4th of july, he competed against four military service members combined. the four soldiers combined 849 hot dogs in five minutes. no match for joey jaws chestnut, though, who ate 57 hot dogs alone in five minutes. the contest also raised more than seven $100,000 to go to a nonprofit supporting military families. it's nice to for him to give his time to, you know, the soldiers there. he can go up against the whole military. yeah, exactly. yeah and win by by 2 or 3. all brownley. all right, well, we're starting out this morning with a nice, refreshing start. i wanted to show you the changes that we are seeing and how this will affect us. look at the san francisco

camera. that's the golden gate bridge. fog is back in its 55 degrees there now, where it's all clear. it's 66 in dublin, 69 in san jose. as you can see that fog has very limiting cooling effects for us. and along the coastline will be the place to be if you want that natural air conditioning in the spotlight. half moon bay hiking along the coastline. it's going to be in the low 50s to start and only reaching into the mid 60s with that high temperature right at about noon. so we are going to see in san francisco some milder weather there, but we're still just shy of a record high temperature, expecting it to reach 79 degrees 101. in santa rosa. that would most likely set a new record. and then we're also very close in a lot of other spots, but i do think we'll be well below a record high in san jose. but not too far from there. morgan hill, 104 degrees today, and in livermore, 102 106, in concord, vacaville
5:55 am
107 and as hot as 109 degrees in ukiah. we'll look at tomorrow. it gets even hotter there, 113 degrees. unfortunately, the heat is not backing off. it's going to ramp up a couple of more degrees for some spots, like the tri-valley, the inland east bay and much of the valleys in the north bay. as we take a look at napa and what to expect really hot weather there that will start to ease up a bit sunday into early next week. we're still above normal, but at least we're not setting records and the heat continues throughout much of next week. so we're looking at triple digits for today through sunday, and then highs in the upper 90s next week. we may catch a little bit more relief in our early morning hours with slightly cooler temperatures, but we are getting some relief in san francisco with upper 70s low 80s today across the city and then mid 70s throughout much of next week. mike, you're starting with a quick look at the bay bridge toll plaza to emphasize vacation week for many around the bay. look at that. a smooth, easy

drive looks like actually up here we may have an issue of bus. looks like it's pulled over to the shoulder. that's the 880 overcrossing. no problems as you're passing by, but just the note if you're heading toward the bay bridge right here out of oakland. now another note if you're traveling from richmond to millbrae and you typically take the bart lines, the red line, first of all, there's no slowing there on the maps. the red line will show you no service. right now, you can't take direct service between richmond and millbrae, or vice versa. you'll have to make a transfer over at macarthur. same area as last week. different issue. but there's an issue and interruption requiring the transfer. so the orange line and the yellow line will sort of take up the slack to get you back and forth between the peninsula. we're still at the minimum for vasco roads, emphasizing the lighter traffic volume around the bay here out of the altamont pass, and even coming in from south county back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, happening now. recovery teams plan to continue to search for a man believed to have drowned in the russian river. he disappeared while swimming wednesday night. this is near
