6:00 am
just how hot it is expected to get across the bay area. meteorologist kari hall is tracking a microclimate weather alert still in effect. 4th of july ending with a bang as people set out thousands of illegal fireworks across the bay area, some sparking brushfires that kept firefighters busy and alert overnight. we're tracking the high risk and the record heat that continues into the weekend, plus calming concerns, president biden tries to assure
6:01 am
voters he is fit for office as he continues to face pressure to drop out. we are live from washington with how president biden plans to convince not only voters, but leaders within his own party and donors, too. this is today in the bay. thanks so much for joining us on this sleepy july 5th. it's hard to sleep last night, not just the illegal fireworks, but also the heat. i'm kris sanchez, i'm in for laura garcia, and i'm marcus washington. of course, we've got to get you caught up on what's going on with that traffic this morning with mike. but let's talk about that heat. meteorologist kari hall had to be the bearer of bad news. yeah might have so. well, you know, switch to some iced coffee this morning trying to wake up and stay cool. we are going to have some hot temperatures again today, but we're starting out with a nice, cool morning for much of the bay area. not too bad. it's in the upper 50s in san francisco, san mateo, palo alto's at 59, it's 66 in san
6:02 am
jose and 69 in martinez, but mostly 50s throughout the north bay. and then as we go into the rest of the morning, into the afternoon, you want to get in those outdoor activities that morning, walk the yard, work all of that stuff, get it done early, and foster city, we're in the low 60s now. we stay in the 60s through 10:00 and then into the 70s and then quickly into the low 80s. in the early afternoon as our temperatures there head for the upper 70s for much of the peninsula. we'll be at a high of 88 in hayward today, 99 in dublin and 106 in concord, san jose. in the low 90s, while in los gatos, a high of 100 degrees and a lot of triple digit heat for much of the north bay, we'll get a look ahead to the weekend coming up. mike, you've been tracking one alert for commuters. yeah, it's a light traffic volume today, but the issue is for bart riders. similar situation. we talked about the red line service last week and this week as well. there's no red line service. a different issue. we have a track side issue. we may
6:03 am
get it restored later on. today we're waiting for word from bar. meanwhile, you can still transfer between richmond and millbrae, or vice versa. you'll make a transfer at the macarthur station, and they'll have overhead signs to guide you. and you can always ask a bart service agent as well. but that's going to be a delay for you transferring at macarthur. the traffic volume on the roadways, meanwhile, look at that. no metering lights, no backup bay bridge back to you all right. thanks, mike. well, those hot temperatures kari was talking about keeping fire crews alert and busy with fires around the bay area overnight. so over in antioch, crews, they're putting out a brush. fire was burning on lotus street. this is near hillcrest. firefighters at that scene last night working near what looks like a backyard of a home. a fence there on that property appeared to be damaged as well. now, it's unclear if that fire was started by fireworks. we do have a crew there at that scene. we're going to bring you more information as we get it. now to a live look at the scene of another brush fire in san jose. this is east of almaden in the boulder ridge
6:04 am
area. up until just a few minutes ago, there were crews still on the scene making sure that those flames have been put out, but it looks like everything is all clear now. this is what it looked like though, as that fire was at its peak, and you can just see how fast that fire just rolls up the hillside. firefighters told people to avoid the area, but again, it appears to be clear now no structures were threatened. well, the night sky lit up across the bay area for the 4th of july. and as you look at these images here on your screen, you know that not all of them were legal in some cases, illegal fireworks led to brush fires and tense moments for residents and firefighters. and then over, in one case, a mishap at a scheduled event leading to some tense moments over in the south bay today in the bay's ginger conejero saab. she is live for us this morning. okay, so ginger, a lot of folks are saying that things really could have been a lot worse. in that case, but i guess everyone's okay. fortunately, everyone is okay. everything is much better
6:05 am
than it could have been. marcus and kris firefighters got to work quickly and they were able to keep things under control. but it does show you just how fast things can change, especially under our current conditions. now, talking about that professional fireworks show, it started in san jose around 920 at lake cunningham park. people were enjoying the show, but then just a few minutes in, their attention turned to a small brush fire on the hill. crews got that out quickly, but then more flames popped up in a few other spots. council member domingo candelas was there at the show and says they were prepared with firefighters standing by. that's why we do these events with the firefighters on hand so they can be able to respond to, to, you know, small little fires, little brush fires that happen. obviously, that's not what we want. but, you know what? prepare for the worst. well, part of the reason this event was planned was so that there would be less of an incentive for people to use illegal
6:06 am
fireworks, but that does not always work. illegal fireworks are suspected of starting another fire in martinez, near central avenue. you can see fireworks were even going off above the flames as crews rushed to get the fire under control. firefighters say about three acres of burned there. and as we go into the weekend, fire crews from across the bay area remain on high alert because of these conditions. and of course, we know and experience that fireworks for 4th of july happened before the holiday, as well as after marcus and chris. all right. thank you ginger. so things can change so fast. and one way to stay on top of it is to get the nbc bay area app. you can get up to the minute updates for your neighborhood, right to your phone, and we'll send you alerts when there's any emergency or breaking news. you can download it for free on all devices. well, the 4th of july holiday not interrupting that race for the white house as we turn to decision 2024, president
6:07 am
biden continued to face pressure. this is after his less than stellar performance during the first presidential debate with former president donald trump, now president biden asking voters to focus on his three and a half years of accomplishments. not that one night. now meanwhile, former president donald trump remains on the attack today in the bay's brie jackson joins us from washington. brie president biden really trying to ease those concerns and their concerns across the board really? that's right. good morning, chris marcus. so president biden suggested to his allies that he may limit evening events in order to get more sleep. and he's also ramping up his activities this month, this as the president faces questions about his ability to win in november. president biden, celebrating the 4th of july holiday at the white house, honoring the country's past, present and future. decades later. we have to look at ourselves and ask the question, will we stand for freedom again?
6:08 am
we stand for democracy. we stand together as americans. i believe we will, and we can. questions remain about the president's political future. following his poor performance at the first presidential debate, former president trump, seizing on the criticism and sharing this video, making the false claim that biden is quitting the race, he just quit. you know, he's quitting the race. a few democrats have publicly called on biden to step aside, including congressman lloyd doggett. most continue to show support while also expressing concerns. i think we have to take it day by day. we've got to see the president get out there, show that he's got the stamina, talk to rectly, to the american people. the american public is divided. i love joe and i love kamala, especially. my concern is, yes, like everybody else age. but the bottom line is i
6:09 am
can't vote for the other guy consciously. if joe biden is on the ballot in november, i think that bodes better for trump. but i do think he's incapable. the president insists he's staying in the race. you got me, man. i'm not going anywhere. the biden-harris ticket is heading into a critical stretch for their campaign, seeking to convince voters and donors that biden is fit for office. and today, president biden is scheduled to campaign in wisconsin. he'll also sit down for his first televised interview since the debate. president biden is expected to try to do damage control during this high stakes sitdown, but some democrats doubt that it will be enough. marcus kris brie is so is a sit down interview. is that live or it's going to be on tape? do you know? so the sit down interview this evening is going to be live in prime time. and then there will be a recorded version that will be played, i believe, on sunday.
6:10 am
okay. all right. we'll be watching i guess both times. thank you so much. brie have a good morning. 609 for you right now, taking a live look at one of the cooler places in the bay area that we've seen over the last few days, san francisco meteorologist kari hall has been tracking what we can expect. you know, the fog there is really helping out this morning. kari. it's only going to help san francisco to. they're only going to see san francisco. yeah. so we are starting out all clear in dublin this morning. and a beautiful sunrise as we're getting this friday started. people are heading to work, but you can't really see much as you're crossing the golden gate bridge. that is going to provide some cooling relief for the cit. today in san jose, we're starting out sunny and it's going to be another hot afternoon. and even at 9:00, we're at 75 degrees. and seeing those temperatures warming up into the mid to upper 90s and a lot of light wind and also the high heat continues for the valleys. we may set some new records in santa rosa. the forecast is 101. the record is
6:11 am
99. other areas well above normal but not setting new records. we'll get a look at the weekend forecast coming up. mike's been trying to find us some lower gas prices. yeah, we're going for kari. we're looking at a popular price point, actually on the state's leaderboard. that's at the top of the list here. 385 continues to be our best in the bay area. and a number of the top in the state as well. this is at cupertino car wash on north deanza boulevard. next price. well there's nothing under four bucks in the east bay right now. concord we got the lowest with 404 at dimond gas and mart on oak grove road and on the peninsula. san mateo county's low is in burlingame. that's 419 a and a gas on broadway. we're getting all the reports from all of you. gasbuddy.com on the roadways. we have one major issue. the roadways are looking like green sensors. it is right here. the bart system, the red line. there's no red line service right now. you can still make that trek between richmond and millbrae. folks visiting town need to note this. getting
6:12 am
into san francisco out of richmond, you're going to have to make a transfer over at macarthur. go to bart.gov for more detail. back to you. nice to see prices $0.15 below for. that's nice. got to find it. all right, all right. so openai targeted by hackers. so coming up this morning we're going to tell you the reason the company decided to not publicly reveal that breach. and meta and facebook leader mark zuckerberg going viral this morning. we'll show you his 4th of july celebration. sure to appear in your feed. and a display quacking up a lot of people. the giant rubber ducky sure to fit the bill for anyone hoping to make some holiday humor. quack quack. keep it right here. kris has got more of that when we come back
6:13 am
6:14 am
flex alert! flex alert! a power outage is looming. that's just alert, he's always getting worked up about something. flex alerts notify us of preventable power outages. that way we always know when to help stop one. ok flex, just drop some knowledge on me again. oh, ok i will - i'll turn our thermostat to 78... i'll unplug the blender. the hair dryer. - my blankie? - yep! - let's talk about it! - nope. ooo, we can save the laundry til' the morning! oh, yes please! oh! little things like this help save our power and help save us from outages.
6:15 am
with flex alerts, the power is ours. livermore and what to expect today. any outdoor activities doing yard work, or just trying to run some errands you want to try to get it done before 10:00 at noon. we're already at 95 degrees and headed to 105. during the middle of the afternoon, we'll get a look at our weekend forecast coming up in a few minutes. oh my. look at that. no metering lights, no backup, but lots of sunlight here. if you're traveling from san francisco into oakland, count your commute. actually, there's not much of a commute. the issue is on the rails. we
6:16 am
continue to follow the red line with no service, no direct service, at least for folks leaving richmond. we'll talk about the transfer you'll make coming up. all right. thanks, mike and kari wall street is set for a flat open as investors return from the 4th of july holiday. this also follows, though the monthly jobs report, released about 45 minutes ago, that fell in line with forecasts. so just a smidge higher. the news, combined with the recent run of subdued data, could open the door for the federal reserve to cut interest rates this year, minutes from the fed's most recent meeting, signaling they are in no rush to lower rates. now the dow, the nasdaq, the s&p 500 are on track for a positive week, with the nasdaq and the s&p at record highs. well, new york times reporting that hackers got access to openai's internal messaging system last year, stealing details about the company's technology. now, they lifted the information from an online forum, but they did not get into the systems. this is
6:17 am
where openai, the maker of chatgpt, houses and builds its ai. at the time, the company told employees and the board about the breach, but decided not to share the news publicly as no information about customers or partners were stolen. the breach was never considered a national security threat. meta founder and ceo mark zuckerberg was celebrating the 4th of july in a big way. hey, i was born in the usa. while the 40 year old marked the holiday by sharing a video on instagram showing himself surfing while wakeboarding, or wake surfing while wearing a tuxedo, drinking a beer, holding a us flag. he captioned the post saying happy birthday america. our chief photographer robbie bisram and his wife do that sort of thing. they were wearing onesies one time. it was so cute. really? yeah. you think he's really doing this? yeah, that's really him. yeah. he's good. well, i mean, he has really focused on athleticism. i was like, is this ai or is it
6:18 am
okay? hey mark, is he wearing those ray-bans? and he's trying to sell us the ones with the. oh yeah. all right. trending this morning. if you like big ducks, this should fit the bill. yes. the world's largest rubber duck is now floating around southern california's lake elsinore. this is part of the 4th of july celebrations. that inflatable duck. it's called mama duck measures 61ft tall, 64ft wide, and 74ft long. and she's on display over at the stadium in lake elsinore through saturday night and according to the ducks fan page, yes, mama duck got a fan page. she's heading over to greensboro, north carolina next. hi okay. it's just random. yeah. kari, i almost texted you yesterday because i got home and my child was baking cookies, and i about died. i was like, who will know? what time was it? it was noon. okay, that's not too
6:19 am
bad. that's not. that's before it really got really hot in the house. that's why. so it's your daughter doing it early, but you got some sweet treats. oh my lord child. okay, so auntie carrie's going to tell you you can just put them on the sidewalk today. you don't have to turn on the oven. thank you, auntie kari. i'm in crisis. there you go. yeah. you know, the blacktop works. the best for goodwill. and, yeah, that's a reminder that the pavement is hot. don't take your dog out walking during the middle of the day on those hot surfaces. find some grass. we are still under this microclimate weather alert, but already starting out with a wide range in temperatures. it's nice and cool in san rafael, 50 degrees it is 66. in san jose. dublin is starting out the morning at 64 and 57 with some fog in san francisco, that fog is going to cool the coastline, and i know this is going to be one of the places where people are trying to go escape the valley heat. pacifica will see temperatures in the morning.
6:20 am
starting out in the low 50s. the fog quickly clears out, but we're seeing most of the temperatures throughout the day. only in the low to mid 60s. we will be right at 66 degrees any time from 1 to 4:00. this afternoon. and then once that breeze picks up the temperatures will start to drop again for the evening. so really cool conditions there as a lot of our inland areas deal with some near record heat. but this is all well above average. we're used to even in the beginning of july. we're used to seeing temperatures in santa rosa in the mid 80s. today we're headed up to 101 degrees concord we're usually in the upper 80s, but today it's 106. even in san francisco, it's well above normal. so today we're looking at more of the high heat. the excessive heat warning continues for the inland valley san martin. you're going to see a high of 103, while clearlake will reach a high of 108 degrees. as we go through the forecast for the south county, morgan hill sees the heat backing off just a little bit.
6:21 am
but this is still very hot with some upper 90s and we continue with 90s, at least through much of next week, possibly into the weekend as we see gradually easing up. but i would like for it to happen a lot more quickly. we're going to be in the triple digits inland through the weekend and 90s throughout next week, while san francisco will see temperatures in the low 80s. fruit from today through the weekend will be in the 70s next week as we get a little bit more of the clouds and fog returning along the coastline. mike, you have a note for folks visiting town? yeah, for folks, i mean, you might be getting up early. i don't know, you're probably sleeping in if you're on vacation right now, but a note if you're planning on taking bart into san francisco from the east bay, you have to transfer at the macarthur station. you don't know what that means. the overhead signs will guide you there. station agents, there's an issue with the red line and some track side issues, so they'll continue to repair that. also, if you're in town to see the beautiful golden gate bridge, you won't see it right now. this fog is there. that's
6:22 am
the only advisory from chp light traffic and no metering lights at the bay bridge. golden gate bridge. you can't really see that view, but later on today, you'll see that and it will be spectacular. folks looking at spectacular green sensors all around the bay. look at that. contra costa county. no slowing has showed up all morning on highway four. and we're looking at no delays out of the altamont pass coming over the peninsula and the south bay. it's a great drive back to you. thank you mike. 621 this morning, next year on today in the bay, nbc bay area responds a company sold him a new phone, plus the promise of an $800 credit. but nearly a year later, nada. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura, nbc bay area sponds nextre makes its

way over to mexico. it is now a category two and weakened over mexico, but still a category two can leave a trail of destruction. there was a lot of destruction in jamaica's southern coast on thursday. two people died in jamaica as hurricane beryl swept through the area. it brought down power lines and left hundreds of people out of their homes and in shelters. that hurricane broke records as the earliest category five storm in the atlantic, but again, it is now weaker, a category two as it heads over mexico. well, as you plan your weekend, we need to tell you that some bay area parks are still off limits because of the
6:26 am
ongoing heat and high fire danger. east bay regional park district they will keep some of those parks closed through at least today. we can tell you that the anthony chabot campground, it is closed through this weekend. other destinations may open tomorrow. swim centers and parks along the shoreline remain open. well, we all love a good deal, some of us more than others, but sometimes those deals end up being duds. and one option for you turn to our consumer team. investigator chris chmura joins us now with a recent resolution from his team. reporter happy friday. lots of companies try to lure us in with promises of discounts or future credits, but each week we hear from viewers still waiting for those promises to pan out. like kyle in dublin, a cell phone store rep said if he upgraded to a new phone, he would get an $800 credit, so he got the new phone, but he didn't get the credit. despite requesting it for nearly a year. so kyle
6:27 am
turned to us for service. we contacted the company. now the company is giving kyle his $800 credit. we've gotten quite a few complaints recently about phone trade in credits that didn't actually materialize. well, if you're looking to upgrade, make sure you get that promotion in writing before you agree to it. that way you have evidence. if the company doesn't hold up its end of the bargain. if you're getting no reception on a cell phone complaint or anything else, let us know. scan the qr code on screen right now to fill out our consumer complaint form online. have a great weekend! i'm ginger conejero saab in antioch, where a late night brushfire threatened homes in one neighborhood this morning. we're still seeing some hotspots pop up on the burned out hill. we'll give you a live update on the other side of the break. keep it here. you'r on tap

in parts of the bay area. we are tracking that heat wave and how soon you may start to see some relief. and look at this close call in the east bay, still keeping neighbors on their toes. this morning, a grass fire forced neighbors to flee their homes overnight. and then this happened. just this morning. hotspots still popping up and stern warning from police. their

message to anyone thinking of participating in what became a hugely chaotic, unsanctioned event. just last year in san francisco. this is today in the bay. good morning to you. it is friday, july 5th. thanks for making us a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington and i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia is off. we want to get right to our forecast as we start off this six 30 hour. and kari, you've shown us that san francisco getting a tiny bit of a break, but nobody else. not really. i mean, it's the coastline that's going to see the break in the heat. and we're seeing the fog returning there while in the inland valleys it is still clear and temperatures will heat up quickly. take a look at dublin and our temperature trend throughout the day. we're going from 7:00 at 65 degrees to 11:00 at 87, 98 at 1:00, and hitting 100 degrees again there today in san jose. it will be in the low 90s and up
6:32 am
to 104 for morgan hill, concord 106. it may be even hotter than it was yesterday in some spots, as this heat wave continues. unfortunately for the weekend, as we were hoping things would come down a little bit, it may ramp up even more so for parts of the north bay up to 113 degrees in ukiah and mike all morning long you've been tracking this bart problem. yeah. and because it's a light commute day, it's all right for most commuters. but some folks are visiting from out of town, so do note when you look at the bart map, you'll see the colors for the lines. the red line has no service right now, which is a direct service between richmond and millbrae on the peninsula. from the east bay, you can make that trip. you just have to transfer over at macarthur station. if you're not familiar with the area, those overhead signs will walk you through the process again, it's just a transfer, but it will create a delay and something that you have to think about. meanwhile, you don't have to think about the commute. there's the bay bridge, no metering lights, no backup back to you. that is good. thank you. mike. santa rosa firefighters had a busy
6:33 am
night. this was a one of the wildfires. or rather grass fires sparked by fireworks shortly after midnight near montecito avenue. the fire department posted that video saying that it was one of a dozen fireworks related fires overnight. police say officers also confiscated large quantities of fireworks and a late night scare for some east bay residents. a grass fire briefly sent families scrambling to safety today in the bay's ginger conejero saab is live in antioch. and ginger, you saw firsthand that those fires, even when they're out, they smolder. reporter that's right. we know that this brush fire is out, but you can still smell the smoke in the air. you can definitely see what it left behind. and just over my shoulder there, there's a second hot spot that we saw just moments ago. pop up. it seems to have the smoke from. it seems to have died down a little bit. but i want to show you some video. not too long ago, there was the first hot spot that we saw that popped up along the hill. one of the neighbors that lives in the in the neighborhood
6:34 am
that was threatened with this fire last night. she actually walked down the hill and kind of stomped it out, taking matters into their own hands. this fire definitely left neighbors here. people in the area with a very big scare last night. i want to show you some more video of people from the neighborhood that lined the streets late at night as they were forced to evacuate, including one elderly man who watched this very scary scene unfold from his wheelchair on the sidewalk. the fire here burned on lotus street near hillcrest. firefighters were on the scene. they were working near what looks like the backyard of a home. a fence appears to be damaged, and a man who evacuated with his fiance and his two year old son says their night quickly took a terrifying turn. rushing at you like a movie, like it was so insane. and then i have. i'm thankful for good neighbors. another neighbor down the hill just started repeatedly. it's time to get out. that's how fast
6:35 am
it's coming. anything that you left, you left nothing. no time for anything. it's a hillside. it's dry grass. it's coming really fast. well, those neighbors have been vigilant up until this morning. the fire was reported shortly after ten last night. evacuations were in place around 1030, and contra costa fire knocked the fire out shortly after 11. it is unclear if the fire was started by fireworks now. fire crews were hard at work across the bay area. we're now going to show you some video from san jose, where san jose fire responded to a tier two vegetation fire east of almaden lake in south san jose. that fire caused a bit of traffic, but fortunately there were no structures threatened. that fire is out. the one here in antioch is out. but as you mentioned, kris hot spots still kind of popping up and you can really see the damage that was left behind here with that fence at that house. it seems to have been damaged. and of course, the rest of this hill in antioch,
6:36 am
ginger conejero saab today in the bay all right. glad no one was seriously hurt there, ginger. thank you. we do have some good news on the toll fire that started early tuesday morning near calistoga. it is now more than 50% contained. the toll fire burned more than 40 acres in rugged terrain, and firefighters had the added challenge of those red flag conditions. the cause of that fire is not yet known. well happening today, the man accused of pushing an elderly woman off of a bart platform to her death is expected in court. that incident, happening sunday at san francisco's powell street station. that's when police say 74 year old corazon don don was pushed onto that track by transient travis belmont. that train approaching later striking her. police aren't saying if the victim knew her attacker. an arraignment is scheduled for 130. this afternoon. also today in san francisco, a 79 year old woman accused of plowing her suv into a family of four, killing them all is due in court for her
6:37 am
arraignment. it happened in march at a bus stop near the west portal bart station. mary fong lieu is facing four counts of felony vehicular manslaughte. investigators say that that family was waiting there at the bus stop when her suv jumped the sidewalk. that couple and their two very young children died. well, today, san jose police tell us they will reveal more details about the shooting death of a man early yesterday. this happened near the kaiser medical center on liska lane just before five in the morning. that's where police say they found a man who was shot and who died at the scene. in video posted to social media, you can see in the distance a car that crashed into a garage and then got fire. now this is the scene by daylight. you can see the white car more clearly. burn marks on the garage door. right now. it is not clear if the victim was the driver of that car, but we hope to learn more as police give us more details. well, happening tomorrow or maybe not happening
6:38 am
tomorrow. san francisco police are telling people to not show up for the dolores park hill bomb. the unsanctioned skate gathering has been an unofficial tradition for years, but last year it just got out of hand when police moved in to break up the crowd, they clashed with participants. dozens of people were arrested. more than 100 people were ticketed, and later some participants filed civil suits and only some of them have been resolved at this point. so san francisco police are trying to send a firm message this year. stay away or face arrest. this year's event is still being advertised, but does not have the proper permits. well, let's take a live look over in san francisco's chase center this morning. this is where basketball fans this weekend are going to get their first glimpse at the future of the warriors and three other teams. we're talking about the lakers, the kings and miami heat. so this is the return of the california classic. that's that brief nba summer league featuring recent draft picks, second year pros and other young hopefuls trying to make their teams next season.
6:39 am
so the warriors expected to feature guys like brandon podemski as well as trace jackson davis lakers indicating the recent selected bronny james. yeah, that's lebron's son okay, the ticket prices just yeah he's going to take part as well. people want to see what he's got going on. all right. so the game takes place tomorrow sunday and next wednesday. and so that's going to be a lot of fun over there kari miami thinks they're bringing the heat. but as they say in that movie it's already been broughten right. and san francisco is going to be great this weekend. nice cool place. you're heading into chase center and it's going to be in the mid 70s and lots of sunshine throughout the weekend. it will still be gusty. look at those gusts up to 2520 six miles per hour as those temperatures hold steady in the low 70s. okay, this is where the heat is at the alameda county fair today. we're going to see pleasanton's high temperature up to 105 degrees. at least it cools down quickly this evening. and then tomorrow we're back up over 100 degrees
