today, friday, july 5th, 2024. weather extremes. millions of americans could be spending this holiday weekend indoors. brutal heat is hitting the west as wildfires get out of control, and in southern texas now, tropical storm beryl is gaining strength as it turns toward the lone star state. we have the latest forecast now hiring new jobs numbers exceed expectations, but at the same time, unemployment ticks up to the highest point in more than a year and a half. we'll explain why and what it could all mean for you. major shakeup a huge win for the liberal labor party in the uk. the landslide vote bringing an end to more than a decade of conservative leaders. how the shift could impact the special relationship with the u.s. plus mind your manners. from barbecues to beach days, our holiday schedules are packed. we're going to talk about etiquette tips. you need to avoid a frosty reception at your summer outing, and that's definitely something you want to hear about this holiday weekend.

yeah, i've seen some of the tips that are coming and they're good ones. you don't want to wait for that, but for now, we're going to start this hour with the extreme heat it could scorch your plans for the holiday weekend. yeah. once again, more than a third of the country is under some sort of heat alert today. this weekend, more than 50 cities could hit all time record highs. that includes las vegas at a whopping 118 degrees, and california's death valley at. get this 130. all of this is causing concerns for firefighters in northern california who have been battling aggressive wildfires. thousands of people have already been evacuated, and it also comes on the heels of what could be the busiest travel day ever. as millions of people head back home from their 4th of july trips. we are tracking conditions from coast to coast. let's begin with nbc news correspondent steve patterson. he's tracking the fires in california. steve, i know you just made it out and arrived at one of these new fires near yosemite. what can you tell us? yeah, this is mariposa county. this is the french fire, 840

acres. this thing exploded overnight right near the community of mariposa. it's like on the edge, as you would go to yosemite or mariposa high school, right? you can see the track behind me. an outbuilding is destroyed. and take a look at this. this is the football field. and look at that. the charring goes right to the field. this is the case in this entire community. firefighters just able in the nick of time to put enough perimeter down. now. 5% containment to save essentially this entire community. spectacular. but this is one of dozens and dozens of fires burning across the state and the west. more than 20. i just left the thompson fire. that's about 200 miles to the north where they're finally starting to lift some of the mandatory evacuations that fire now nearly 50% contained after causing headaches and problems and destroying four homes for days for firefighters. all of this, though, is in the middle of this stunning heat wave. it's like 100 here, which to me feels much cooler than the 110 where i was yesterday. it's expected to

be even hotter 114 today. in some places. ridiculous conditions when you're trying to put out a fire. guys. yeah, you think about the think about the firefighters out there with all their gear and having to work in that environment. steve, appreciate you getting there for us. thank you. let's turn now to nbc news correspondent priya sridhar with what to expect if you're traveling this weekend. yeah, we're here at the world's busiest airport and this is projected to be the busiest july 4th travel period ever recorded by triple a, more than 28 million people were expected to pass through tsa checkpoints across the country in the ten day holiday travel period, which is expected to end in just a few days sunday. 3 million people are expected to pass through those tsa checkpoints, making it the busiest travel day during the july 4th travel period. and get this, american airlines is saying that sunday is expected to be their busiest travel day of the entire summer. now, as far as the busiest airports this

holiday travel week, according to hopper, that would be dallas, fort worth, denver, and right here in atlanta. and if you've been to an airport recently, this shouldn't come as too much of a big surprise. but the top 12 of the 15 busiest travel days ever recorded by the tsa have all occurred since mid-may. so what does that mean? lines, lines and more lines. so if you're planning on heading to the airport over the next few days, make sure you get here early. pack some snacks and a little bit of patience as you navigate your way to your gate. priya sridhar nbc news priya. thank you. bill, let's get to you now. we can't seem to escape this brutal heat. are we going to have to spend the whole holiday weekend inside? that's the question. yeah, inside or in that pool? that's gotten pretty toasty. i imagine in a lot of cases, the heat is different. we got the heat. dry heat in the west, the really soupy stuff is in areas of the east. so the feels like temperature really is different depending on where you are. but in total, when we add it all up, we're over a third of

the us population approaching about half many locations in the west are under those, what we call excessive heat warnings and some of the hottest temperatures. as you'd expect right now at this hour. it's actually interesting. reading right now is 109 just past noon. it's warmer than vegas and phoenix. raleigh, by the way, durham airport hit 106 last hour. that's their all time hottest temperature ever recorded there at the airport. so it's interesting how it's on one coast and on the other. the heat indices, though, because the relative humidity is so low, it actually feels cooler than the actual air temperature in many areas of the west. but in redding, you're already getting there. you only got about ten degrees to go to get up to about 118 today. vegas 113. and then the heat is really going to shift a little bit with the pacific northwest. and then as we head towards the end of the weekend, the beginning of next week, the worst of it is going to head to the desert southwest, where we could see possibly tie the all time record high in vegas if we hit that 117, maybe breaking it by the time we get to tuesday and there's no end in sight, it's at least 115 or above right through next week. i

just i can't believe these numbers. it's even 100in portland, oregon. are you kidding me? bill karins. thank you. thanks. well, let's talk about the economy now. we have new data out today on the state of the job market in america. in june, the us added 206,000 jobs. that beats the expectations economists on wall street had for that report. but the unemployment rate also rose slightly to 4.1. this is the first time since november 2021 unemployment has risen above 4. let's dig into this with nbc news senior business correspondent christine romans. so christine, help make this make sense. we got higher than expected jobs numbers. and yet this unemployment rate let me be a bill karins meteorologist and tell you it used to be the job market looked like that weather map. hot hot hot hot. this report was a little bit cooler, a little bit more comfortable for the fed at least. and so you had a lot of hiring, but not as much hiring as last month. and you can see that very hot pace. the 300 plus seems to be cooling here. so i think that's the overall takeaway here, that what

had been an unsustainably very strong job market is cooling off a little bit. and when you look at these numbers, the 4.1% unemployment rate, the highest since november, i think 2021, but still 4.1% is still historically quite low. and you just mentioned the fed makes my ears go, wait, the fed, they're the ones that manage the interest rate, right? right. so could this mean that maybe they're going to lower interest rates essentially this particular jobs report fits into the scenario that the fed will be able to cut rates later this year if inflation continues to soften as well. and you've got a job market that is strong but not overheating, not too hot. wage growth an important number in here, 3.9% annual wage growth. that means you see that in your paycheck. it means that your wages are rising faster than overall inflation. so we still feel a little better in our personal finances, but it's not so strong. wage growth is not so strong that it means companies have to like, run out and start hiring, you know, raising prices again to cover up for those higher wages. so it's

an interesting scenario, cooling. i want to i'm going to stay with the weather metaphor and say cooling here. and that's what you want to see more comfortable christine romans thank you. let's turn now to breaking news out of wisconsin, which could have significant implications in the 2024 election. the liberal majority state supreme court in wisconsin ruled to reinstate the use of ballot drop boxes in that crucial swing state. that overturns a previous ban on most of those boxes that allow voters to hand deliver their ballots to ballot drop boxes that can be staffed or unstaffed. the decision will now expand voting access across the state for the august congressional primaries, and then for the november general election. this all comes as president biden is in madison, wisconsin, right now for a campaign rally as he prepares to sit down for a high stakes tv interview, nbc news white house correspondent aaron gilchrist joins us now. so, aaron, the president's rally today really comes as a big time, excuse me, as big time democratic donors signal worry about his campaign where do things stand today with donors and democratic leaders? yeah,

the debate, as we've been reporting, left some donors rattled. and there's one donor in particular, a high dollar donor to the democratic party, abigail disney and heiress to the disney family fortune, who spoke to our colleagues at cnbc, essentially saying that she is not going to continue to donate to democratic causes to the democratic party in this election cycle until president biden leaves the race. she said that she has respect for him, but she believes that it's time for him to go and it's people like that who've spoken up threw their money, and that's a concern, obviously, for the democratic party right now and for the biden-harris campaign. but at the same time, they point to the fact that they've been able to continue to raise money since the president's debate performance last week. the campaign says it's raised more than $30 million, most of that in the days immediately after the debate. and they feel as though there is still a lot of support for president biden and his message at this point. and we expect to hear this from him on the ground in wisconsin today. as well as in that interview that he's expected to

do this afternoon as well, that he is staying in the race, in fact, and he wants to continue on and win it against former president trump. yeah. aaron, let's talk a little bit more about that interview that you just mentioned. this will be the first time he speaks to a television journalist, a broadcast journalist. he's done some radio interviews over the past week. there seems to be a lot of pressure on the president in this interview. they're airing it in prime time. the stakes are high. what is the biden white house trying to do in this interview? well, effectively, the campaign is saying watch me. and the white house is sort of backing up the campaign in that response. they want people to see president biden out there on the campaign trail, as he is today. and then we'll also see him in this interview. this is the first opportunity, really, that we'll have to actually see him in an unscripted setting. since the debate, answering questions from a journalist. and everyone will be watching closely to see how he performs, whether he's able to execute responses to these questions from george stephanopoulos in a way that is satisfactory, to sort of help to, to, to right the ship as there is a lot of doubt and a

mexico. nbc news correspondent guad venegas is keeping a close eye on beryl for us and joins me. guad when do we think it could reach the u.s. and how strong could it be? kate. the forecast indicates that parts of texas would be feeling the effects as early as sunday evening. as you mentioned, the storm has gone through the yucatan peninsula and mexico. fortunately for that area where it made landfall just north of tulum, it's a tourist destination with a lot of newer hotels, bigger structures that can withstand the force of a hurricane. the damage, according to the first reports, as you mentioned, have been to the power infrastructure and some trees. so not as bad as it could have been. now, as the storm moves through the gulf, you mentioned it could gain strength so even if the storm were to arrive in texas with less strength, there's also a possibility of flooding. so two things to watch for once the storm possibly reaches texas as the storms and the flooding, which we've seen in this area with the storm that hit two weeks ago, alberto, and even earlier in the year, heavy rains

in this part of texas always poses a threat. so authorities will be playing, paying close attention as the storm makes its way through the gulf. kate. all right, keep an eye on that. guad venegas. thank you. with a hot holiday weekend now in full swing, millions of americans are heading to the shore to beat the heat. but there are risks. from deadly rip currents to potential shark attacks. nbc news correspondent maggie vespa has what you need to know before you hit the beach this weekend. reporter this holiday weekend hit the beach at your own risk. among the top concerns, a slew of recent shark attacks. this stunning cell phone video appears to show a shark swimming back and forth just feet from shore along south padre island, texas, thursday with the department of public safety helicopter spotting one from above. this moments after authorities say multiple swimmers were attacked, among them ashley silva. i just feel like this pressure, like someone like, punched me or like someone

pushed the back of my leg and i just turned around and it's a shark. another beach goer hospitalized with severe leg injuries. we do not know the species. we do not know the reason why this happened. it's unprecedented here on south padre island. meanwhile, in new smyrna beach, florida, a man from ohio bitten on the foot. yesterday in knee deep water. some studies showing shark attacks, while still rare, have been on the rise in recent years. just last month, former pro surfer tamayo perry was killed by a shark in hawaii. lifeguards advising everyone to be on alert. expert tips to avoid sharks swim in groups, avoid the water at dusk or dawn when sharks are most active. and if you do happen to encounter a shark, keep your movements slow and steady to avoid looking like prey. the shark headlines coming as tens of millions are expected to swarm america's beaches this holiday weekend. officials warning swimmers to also watch out for rip currents. fast moving strips of water that can

days of freshness your way. la la la la la. i get it blue superbird for. the. bounce back fast from heartburn with tums. gummy bites and love food back. dum dum dum dum dum. this is the fast forward on nbc news daily. i'm janelle wang. 4th of july went out with a bang and with more than a few fires across the bay area, firefighters had many close calls last night, with neighbors blaming illegal fireworks for all the trouble. nbc bay area's ginger conejero saab has more from the scene of a fire in antioch. now, investigators have not confirmed the cause of this brushfire in antioch, but neighbors here all seem to agree they believe that it was caused by fireworks because they were going off nonstop last night. now the fire is out today, but take a look at what it left behind. the hill that we're standing on is burned. the tree here, or what's left of it completely burned as

well. and you can see just how close the flames came to that home on top of the hill. the backyard fence to that home is destroyed, but fortunately that is the extent of it. a huge sigh of relief for the family that lives in that home, as well as neighbors in this community after such a terrifying night. and you can see in this video the huge flames that made their way very quickly up the hill, ash and smoke blowing everywhere because of the wind. here are some pictures as well that are shared with us by one of the residents here who did not want to appear on camera. she tells us their goal was to make their neighbors aware of what was happening and specifically those in a nearby hospice home. now again, the fire is out this morning, but we have seen hotspots pop up earlier. another woman from the neighborhood noticed a bigger hot spot that was burning. she put her shoes on as she walked down the hill and stomped it out herself. and we've been hearing stories of how this community has looked out for one another, especially

helping everyone get evacuated last night. now fire crews were hard at work across the bay area. another fire, this time in santa rosa, is also believed to be caused by fireworks. fire took out the fence of the home as well, very similar to how it did here, but it did do some more damage. it damaged the side of the house as well. now down in the south bay, san jose fire responded to a tier two vegetation fire east of almaden lake and south san jose. that fire caused a bit of traffic, but fortunately no structures were threatened. there back in the east bay and not far from where we are now, over in bay point, fire crews responded to a large tree fire in front of a home. the unit fortunately prevented the fire from spreading to that home. a lot of close calls that we've been seeing after the 4th of july weekend, fire crews on alert throughout the bay area because we know that fireworks still exist or still continue on, even after the 4th of july celebrations in antioch. ginger

conejero saab nbc bay area news. thanks, ginger and firefighters dealing with another day of high temperatures. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall on this friday. we're still looking at a wide range in temperatures across the bay area, but much more comfortable near the coastline with half moon bay temperature up to about 75 degrees. upper 70s for san francisco as well as san mateo and 90 in mountain view. los gatos will hit a high of 100 and 104 in mountain view and in gilroy. rather, morgan hill and gilroy. and we'll see a lot of highs over 100 degrees for the inland east bay to the north bay. and it's still going to be hot in the valleys on saturday. the he's the heat not easing up just yet and we'll see on sunday our high temperatures coming down several degrees but still a moderate heat risk for the inland valleys. a look at our 7-day forecast is coming up. san francisco is coming out with a warning to skaters hoping to

take part in the dolores park hill bomb. don't do it. the skate gathering has been an unofficial tradition for years. you may remember last year it got out of hand. police clashed with skaters when they moved in to break up the crowd. this morning, police chief bill scott says anyone who shows up this weekend will face arrest. we're here to say officially, we do not intend to allow a hill bomb tomorrow. we're going to do everything we can to keep our community safe, to prevent that from happening. and as far as we're concerned, there is no hill bomb tomorrow. dozens were arrested and more than 100 people were ticketed last year. many teenagers. eventually, most criminal cases from the event were dropped by the district attorney. participants filed lawsuits against the city. those cases are still pending. another story we're watching in san francisco in about an hour from now. the first court appearance for the man accused of pushing a woman off a bart platform and into an oncoming train, killing her. the deadly incident happened monday evening at the powell street station. police say a transient, travis belmont pushed 74 year old corazon

night. three people were killed, including a mother and a son, and more than a half dozen others were hurt. investigators now say daniel hayden blew through a stop sign, jumped a sidewalk and drove straight into a manhattan park where people were watching fireworks, according to his social media. hayden is a substance abuse counselor who has written a book on addiction. hayden is now in police custody, and several people are hurt after a fireworks accident at a july 4th celebration in utah. it happened at a football stadium outside salt lake city, police say during the ceremony. a few of the fireworks misfired and veered toward people in the stands. our nbc affiliate in salt lake city says multiple people had to be taken to the hospital, but it's unclear how badly they're hurt. after a brief pause, police did allow the event to continue, and the wimbledon crowd paid a special tribute to tennis star andy murray yesterday. the 37 year old is playing his last wimbledon tournament, saying he plans to retire after the 2024 season. murray lost a doubles

match last night alongside his brother jamie, but after that he was honored with a short ceremony and a standing ovation at the tournament's famed center court. the former world number one will continue his last wimbledon on saturday, playing mixed doubles alongside emma raducanu. president biden has just spoken with uk's new prime minister, congratulating him on a landslide election win. keir starmer is forming his new cabinet today, just hours after officially becoming prime minister. the liberal labor party crushed the conservative party in thursday's election, ending their 14 year rule in british politics. nbc news international correspondent raf sanchez is in london for us, raf, this was a huge blowout. what did starmer say during his first address as prime minister? hey, kate, from a rainy downing street where earlier today, just hours after that historic election last night, we watched

britain's lightning fast transfer of power underway. we watched as outgoing conservative prime minister rishi sunak walked out of that famous black door for the last time. his party suffering the worst defeat in 200 years and just an hour later, britain's new prime minister, keir starmer, heading to buckingham palace meeting the king and then heading here to downing street to address his nation for the first time. take a listen to what he had to say. our country has voted decisively for change for national renewal and a return of politics to public service. our work is urgent and we begin it today, he said. the work of change begins immediately. and he wasn't kidding. within an hour or so, he was appointing his new foreign secretary, his new

defense secretary and other members of the british cabinet guys and raf of course, here in the u.s, our presidential election is now four months away. starmer actually spoke with biden earlier. what are you learning about what the future of relations between these two countries might look like? yeah, that first call with the president of the united states is kind of part of the choreography of a british prime minister's first day on the job. the two leaders reaffirmed the importance of what they call the special relationship between the united states and great britain. they said that they will continue working together to support ukraine. that is a policy position that prime minister starmer shares with president biden. it is not one that he shares with donald trump, and it will be interesting to see if donald trump does win the election in november. how prime minister starmer navigates those differences. we also are going to see starmer in washington at the nato summit next week, guys.

all right, raf, i know it's raining, but it's nice to see you outside the middle east and in london today, ralph. thank you. well, let's turn to the middle east now. there appears to be progress in cease fire talks between israel and hamas. a senior biden administration official says there has been a, quote, breakthrough in negotiations. but israeli officials are trying to downplay expectations. nbc news international correspondent matt bradley reports from tel aviv. so it is another round of hostage negotiations that looks like we're starting to see here. there's a lot of optimism coming from washington. we heard from washington people in the biden administration saying that there was a breakthrough, that hamas had softened their position on that same proposal, that the biden administration had been promoting at the end of may, calling it israel's own proposal. and that was later enshrined in a united nations security council resolution that passed last month almost unanimously. well, now it looks like, according to israeli authorities and the us and hamas, who spoke with hezbollah today. reuters quoted hamas as

saying that they actually had already agreed to this deal. but i spoke with two israeli officials this morning. they said that we should temper our optimism and they said specifically that this wasn't a breakthrough, that this is actually the beginning of a process that could last for several weeks. now if there is a deal that would be a massive breakthrough, it could free those remaining hostages in the gaza strip. they are thought to be about 120 of them. many of them are already thought to have died. it would also free many palestinian prisoners who are currently in israeli prisons. those numbers have yet to be decided, and it would also, perhaps most crucially, to the entire world, who's been watching this situation bring a measure of peace to the fighting in the gaza strip. that remains the main issue. hamas has said from the beginning they will not agree to any hostage negotiation deal that doesn't include a permanent ceasefire in the gaza strip and a full withdrawal of israeli troops. the israelis, particularly led by benjamin netanyahu, the prime minister,

have said that they will not compromise on their intention of totally destroying hamas and its military capabilities. they will not leave until hamas is completely destroyed. of course, that's something that hamas is very unlikely to sign on to, but this is the central fulcrum of this disagreement, and it's one that hasn't wavered ever since the last time there was a successful deal all the way back in november. so now we've reached a familiar impasse. there's high expectations on both sides, and it's going to be up to the israelis now to decide whether or not they're going to agree to the proposal that was just issued by hamas. all right, matt bradley, thank you so much. well, if you have a summer getaway plan to a popular destination, there's a good chance you'll have plenty of company. i mean, plenty travel hot spots becoming absolutely jam packed. it's part of a trend that people are calling overtourism, and it is changing life for the people who actually live in these places. nbc news correspondent emilie ikeda is here with me to explain. emilie,

these cities, these towns, they rely on tourism. they love it. it's a driver for the local economy. but there's a point, right? when it gets to be too much. yeah, absolutely. it's really quite incredible. americans spent more than $1 trillion on travel in 2023, and that is a welcomed economic boost with those droves of tourists coming. but popularity can come at a cost. with the crowds, the noise it impacts real estate. and now some local communities, well, they're pushing back with summer travel soaring to record levels, some popular destinations are now trying to slow the surge of tourists. yeah, it's summer, but since when has yosemite been this bad? look at america's national parks. our national parks are like the disneyland of outdoors. they are super packed, super touristy. more parks are having to require timed entry reservations this summer to ease congestion, like mount rainier, which saw a 40% increase in visitation over the past decade. as overtourism has become a

growing challenge across the country, residents in iconic destinations are pushing back. it gets busier. earlier and earlier, every single year, crowds like these have become the norm in salem, massachusett. it's really increasingly difficult to live in downtown salem now. the city of 45,000 is trying to scare some away with new $350 licensing fees for tour guides, a massive jump from the previous cost of just ten bucks. tour operator beth crowley insists the tours aren't the problem. the tours are actually keeping people from wandering around. it's all part of a larger travel boom. travelers in the u.s. spent $1.3 trillion in 2023, producing an economic footprint of nearly 3 trillion bucks, and the impact of the pandemic on tourism was to accentuate it because, frankly, we want to travel now more than

ever. a boost that in some cases comes at a cost. recently, thousands of protesters in spain calling out mass tourism and its impact on local affordable housing at japan's magnificent mount fuji. there's a new fee and visitor cap, and even venice, italy a tourist mainstay, saint mark's square is super crowded, is now charging day trippers to help thin out throngs of sightseers every major country in the world is staring down the barrel of this issue. too many tourists in the same place at the same time. so experts say, don't feel bad about going where you want to go, but the key is to strategize. consider hitting the more popular spots on slower days or off peak times like earlier in the day. or maybe when other groups might be eating meals or resting. it's all about the plan. the approach. yeah, yeah, i was just in europe and there were crowds. there were definitely, i bet emily arcadia thank you. in

today's daily health, a 52 year old cancer survivor is flipping the script on aging, all thanks to obstacle course racing. wendy bounds has used the last seven years to go from a self-proclaimed unathletic desk jockey to a world class athlete. nbc news correspondent kathy park shows us how. so let's go! obstacle course racing is a gritty, physically demanding sport with competitors enduring challenges at every turn. you won't see it this month at the paris olympics, but will debut in 2028 at the next summer games in los angeles as part of the modern pentathlon, inspiring a new group of elite athletes. wendy bounds won't be competing, but cheering on team usa as they go for gold. at 52 years old, this journalist and cancer survivor believes she already won, crediting the sport for changing her life. i typed in what are the hardest things you

can do? and the google algorithm spit back out spartan race, an obstacle course racing. so when you decide to do this in your mid 40s, what was the feedback? what did people tell you? are you insane? but it's a breakthrough that got her moving in ways she never thought possible. swinging, climbing and tackling obstacles even after her skin cancer diagnosis. i was super lucky they called it very, very early. but suddenly mortality is right there in your face. and if i hadn't had this to, like, give me back some sense of control over my body, i don't know honestly what would have happened. charging ahead wendy is now the epitome of health training hours each day, with the help of two coaches and often a top finisher in her age group. at competitions across the country. i was a skinny kid last picked for sports teams, you know, i sat on the bench, i handed my friends water. i always wanted to be an athlete. wendy's transformation didn't happen overnight. her first race

humbled her. i was terrified, i fell off the 17 foot rope and i almost quit at that point, but i didn't. so that was race number one. fast forward to race number 51 in new york, where i got to join her as she coached, encouraged and pushed me to keep going, proving it's not too late even for me. she's carried this theme into a book, writing a road map for rediscovery and resilience at any age and just like that, i climb up the rest of the wall. this success is so shocking to me that i literally yell to nobody since i don't know anybody. oh my god, i'm going to do this by flipping the script on aging, she's unleashed a fierce competitor now, inspiring others to find their inner athlete. kathy park, nbc news, new york. kathy, thanks so much. still to come, don't be

on summer etiquette. we're talking from beach days to barbecues, travel and house visits. our next guest has you covered on the etiquette. this summer. thomas farley is an etiquette expert and author. thomas, great to see you. great to see you both. we are at the virtual beach here, so let's start with the beach. proper etiquette at the beach. that's right. i feel the summer breeze is already. i think this starts with when you are selecting the spot to put your blanket. please don't plunk yourself directly in front of someone else's already there. if it's a super crowded beach and there's no choice. obviously this is what you have to do, but practice social distancing when you're at the beach. this is key. carry in. carry out with your trash. so even if the bins are overflowing, don't just put your trash next to it. we don't want that trash washing out to the shore. and keep your music and your conversations to a low roar. this is a beach. we know there's going to be noise. yeah, but you shouldn't be the beach dj. speaking of low roars, lots of fireworks yesterday. lots of barbecues. any tips for large gatherings? yeah. so the barbecue in particular. two things that are my favorite tips. here are number one, save

your cup. how many of us we go. we put the cup down. we forget. we get another one. we get another one, another one. so keep the cup mind the folks who need a little bit of assistance getting their food and drink. maybe it's someone who's elderly or somebody who's on crutches. get your food, but get food for others is a nice thing to do. and ask that there's a dress code because sometimes there is. you don't want to be the one to dress down or to dress up. my favorite thing on that screen that we were just showing is don't floss or pick your teeth. do your toothpick in front of others. you know, even if the toothpick is made of gold. and i've seen this do it away from the crowd in the restroom. absolutely. a lot of people traveling this weekend. what are the do's and don'ts of air travel? yeah. so air travel. make sure you're not the person crowding the gate when they say we're now boarding group a and suddenly the entire lounge crowds the gate. unless you're group a or group one, you shouldn't be there waiting to board. make sure you keep again your music to a low roar. you've got your ear, your earbuds, your headphones. make sure you're doing that. and no shoes and

socks off. we don't want to see your feet on the seat. we don't want to smell them. we don't want to see them. absolutely. also that armrest one. yeah. the person gets the armrest. do you have feelings? you have feelings. yes. and a lot of us, i mean, are traveling to see someone. etiquette tips for making sure we get invited back. yeah. that's right. so first of all, don't ask for the invite. you wait to be asked and make sure it's a genuine invite. don't be inviting yourself when you arrive. you're going to bring a housewarming gift. you are not going to expect them to pick you up if you're flying in uber, lyft, they're they're going to get you there. don't ask your host to do the same. keep a clean room. when you're when you're out there, make sure that you are cleaning up after yourself and take the host out for dinner to give them a break. take them to a nice restaurant as your thank you and don't forget that thank you note which you're not going to mail. you're actually going to leave it in their home right before you leave. oh wow. bring a blank with you, write it out and leave it on the kitchen table. a great idea. i was just on vacation in greece and i learned. thank you

burning near oroville. as of this morning, the thompson fire is now 46% contained after a burned four homes and scorched nearly 3800 acres. officials have started letting people go back to their homes. now that the fire is mostly under control at this point, fire crews are just putting out hot spots and strengthening containment lines, all while temperatures could hit 112 today, we knew it was shaping up to be a busy summer for firefighters, all while they're dealing with this long heat wave. here's meteorologist kari hall with our 7-day forecast. well, the heat continues for the inland valleys throughout the weekend. highs over 100 degrees through sunday. and then early next week it's easing up just a little bit, but still it's going to be very hot during the middle of the day with highs in the upper 90s for parts of the south bay, the east bay into the north bay and san francisco, as well as along the coastline. we're going to see some relief here with highs in the low 80s. as the fog returns,

family of four was waiting at that stop to go to the zoo when they were hit. the couple and their very two young children were killed. her lawyers speaking about a potential vehicle malfunction this mornin. i have provided information to law enforcement of an almost identical incident with the same make and model and year of the vehicle that did the exact same thing in new jersey in january of last year. that is being investigated by an nhtsa. the vehicle he was driving was a 2014 mercedes-benz suv. her lawyers are working to get more information from nhtsa on that investigation. fong law will be back in court in october on a much lighter note, san francisco is hosting the nba's up and coming talent as the california classic makes a comeback. warriors, lakers, kings and the miami heat all playing in the brief nba summer league featuring recent draft picks, second year pros and other young hopefuls trying to make the team next season where it's expected to feature guys like brandon pisemsky and trace jackson
