7:00 am
look outside, the sun shining and blue skies over san pedro square market in san jose. beautiful morning to get out for a walk. it is already so nice out there. thank you so much for starting it with us. i'm kira klapper, cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast. lovely mornings, but boy it's been hot. it was. it
7:01 am
was not pleasant to go to bed last night. i think we can agree on that. good morning kira. good morning everyone. we are looking at clear skies. san jose, some clear skies over sfo. but we do have that beautiful marine layer that has provided some overnight relief to some places around the coast. already off to a bright and mild start in dublin. they're at 70 degrees. we compare it to the upper 50s along the peninsula, the north bay, but we'll do some mid 60s for orinda and down into south san jose as we go on and plan our sunday. i do have better news. most of us. i'm going to pull us out of the 100 for for today tomorrow and for tuesday. so that will be a bit of a break. but we buckle up to rise those temperatures once again for the middle of the week. i'll have all those details coming up in about 15 minutes. keir, back to you. all right. cynthia, thanks. we begin with breaking news this morning. right now highway 101 in gilroy is closed in both directions near masten avenue because of police
7:02 am
activity. we know that traffic is being diverted right now, but we have no word on when 101 will open up. we will be sure to follow this story as our newscast goes on. we'll also update our website nbcbayarea.com. and as cynthia just mentioned, we continue to follow day six of this bay area heat wave. adding to fire risk across northern california and grueling conditions for firefighters. people who live southeast of placerville had to evacuate yesterday because of a new wildfire there. the pay fire in el dorado county stands at 77 acres. it ignited around two yesterday afternoon south of highway 50 on the way to tahoe. the steep, wooded terrain and hot weather causing challenges for fire crews. the fire also disrupted services to the placerville airport. aircraft were grounded as flames burned dangerously close to the runway. overnight containment stood at 5. you don't think it's going to
7:03 am
be in your neighborhood? tell us until it is the response was great. honestly, i didn't think we would see so much helicopters and dropping the retardant all over. and it was it was good. it was fast. we want to take you now to santa barbara county, where this huge fire near zaca lake continues to grow. the lake fire has scorched more than 13,000 acres. that's up from 12,000 yesterday. it sparked friday night in the los padres national forest, northeast of los olivos. firefighters helped evacuate people from the lake. resort flames are burning through dry grass and brush. i'm really concerned that the fire might get into the back country in the san rafael wilderness and really start burning right now there is no containment so far, no reports of any structures, no reports of any structures or buildings burned. and as we again mark this day, six of this heat wave keep informed with our

nbc bay area app. you just scan that qr code on your screen. it will send alerts and updates straight to you after you download the app so you don't have to go looking for those updates. new this morning a magnitude to 3.1 earthquake rattling in and around holliste. that's about 40 miles south of san jose. it hit around two this morning, according to the usgs. people felt it as far away as salinas. that's about 20 miles southwest. no reports of any damage and a follow up now to that story we brought you yesterday morning. san francisco police stopping skateboarders from taking part in their annual hill bomb. they put up barricades yesterday along dolores street near dolores park, and it worked until the skaters moved. the unsanctioned event went on anyway on a different nearby hilly street. as you see there today in the bay's alyssa goard takes us there. san francisco police hauled barricade after barricade
7:05 am
down dolores street, right next to dolores park, hoping to keep out skateboarders who were expected to hold the annual unpermitted hill bomb downhill skating event. so police have these barricades installed all up and down dolores street for four blocks. we want people to have fun with their skateboards, but what we don't want and can't have is a community that has been taken over criminal activity, vandalism, assaults, assaults on officers, assaults on the public. last year, police and skaters clashed, uni trains were vandalized, police arrested dozens and charged more than 100 people with inciting a riot. there's ongoing litigation over how police responded. it was a little rowdy back then, like there was some skaters were feeding and it wasn't like part of the skate culture at all. this year, skaters showed up. i came for the speed man. i was trying to at least hit 40mph down this hill. disappointed to see the hill blocked off. i don't get why they're making it
7:06 am
so big of a deal when there's a bunch of other things that need to be dealing with right now. the skaters found their own solution moving to the hill on the other side of the park, hundreds of people lined church street to watch, and san francisco police officers didn't stop them. skater. after skater told us they would rather see the city use its resources to support the event. instead, make it more organized so we can actually have fun and make it more safe for the skaters. alyssa goard today in the bay and we continue to follow problems for customers of a bay area based credit union. patelco says it was the victim of a ransomware attack, ultimately freezing their services for a week and counting. as today in the bay marianne favro reports, while some services have been restored, many are still offline, leaving customers frustrated and worried about paying their bills. here at this
7:07 am
branch in san jose, we talked to several customers who were able to get $300 out of the atm machine this week, patelco told customers that their money is safe. the question now is, is their information safe to. with rent and mortgage payments stacking up for many of patelco half million customers, the dublin based credit union confirmed a ransomware attack last saturday is to blame for a halt on transactions, but offered no timeline for when services will be restored. we don't have access to our accounts, so you can use an atm, but you have no idea how much money's in your account. if you fire up the app, it just has the warning screen that says that the system is down. that's been the warning screen that's been on for eight days. debbie christopherson says she's been able to use venmo, but customers can't use zelle or bill pay, and are in the dark about whether their mortgage payments went through. on wednesday, patelco posted an update telling customers their money is safe
7:08 am
and secure. cybersecurity expert ahmed bonafe says the big question now is whether customers information is safe. hackers, their main goal is to get this information and this is going to do two things for them. number one, they can sell it in the dark web. number two, they can use it. use this information to access other accounts. you know, of connected to the credit union account, which is why bonafe says customers need to be vigilant, monitor your credit, make sure that there is no new accounts opened under your name, and change your passwords on any accounts connected to your patelco account. debbie, who's been a patelco customer since she was a kid, says the ordeal has been extremely stressful and she's frustrated patelco hasn't offered more information about when she can start doing transactions again, especially paying her mortgage. honestly, just in the way they've handled it. i probably am not a, you know, a member moving forward.
7:09 am
we don't know all the specifics about this attack, but professor bonafe says 90% of all ransomware attacks begin with phishing emails. marianne favro today in the bay one person in the east bay, the north bay, is dead. following a police chase and a car crash. it happened yesterday in vallejo, near sonoma boulevard and lemon street. police were trying to pull over a car, but the driver sped away instead. that chase went on about two miles down sonoma boulevard to tennessee street. that's where the driver crashed into another car. one man in that car did not survive. other victims were taken to the hospital. we are awaiting word from vallejo pd on any arrests. to texas. now where people are bracing for impact as tropical storm beryl approaches. it is expected to hit land tomorrow morning, threatening damage in and around corpus christi. beryl already left a path of
7:10 am
destruction through the caribbean last week. the tropical storm is expected to strengthen back into a hurricane before it makes landfall in texas. residents along the gulf coast are bracing in galveston's. you see grocery stores here running out of food and supplies. in corpus christi, cars are lined up for sandbags. demand quickly outpacing supply up and down the texas gulf coast. nerves are high. are you doing anything extra to prepare? we just buy some water at the grocery store. you're going to be putting them in front of the garage and then and then lining the doors with them. when beryl makes landfall, it could bring 4 to 6ft of storm surge along with it. as the wind pushes the water inland, it could quickly swamp evacuation routes, start flooding floating cars, and flooding homes. if the water reaches six feet, the risk of injury and death goes up substantially. our hearts are with everyone there. 710 right now. much more ahead on today in
7:11 am
the bay. coming up, we take you live to washington, d.c. for our weekly interview with kristen welker, who has a preview of this week's meet the press.
7:12 am
flex alert! flex alert! a power outage is looming. that's just alert, he's always getting worked up about something. flex alerts notify us of preventable power outages. that way we always know when to help stop one. ok flex, just drop some knowledge on me again. oh, ok i will - i'll turn our thermostat to 78... i'll unplug the blender. the hair dryer. - my blankie? - yep! - let's talk about it! - nope. ooo, we can save the laundry til' the morning! oh, yes please! oh! little things like this help save our power and help save us from outages. with flex alerts, the power is ours.
7:13 am
the 22 minute, unedited interview, the president was defiant and often dismissive. please join me in welcoming kristen welker, moderator of meet the press. hi kristen, as always, great to see you this morning. it's no secret in the last week and a half that democrats are rattled. there are growing calls for president biden to consider getting out of the race in that interview, we saw him, you know, showing denial, really, of trump widening his lead. what's the latest you're hearing? well, kyra, i had a chance to sit down
7:14 am
with congressman adam schiff. and i have to tell you, it was a fascinating conversation. he is among those who does not think that president biden calmed the concerns that, quite frankly, the panic among democrats with that interview on abc, in part because he didn't commit to a cognitive test, congressman schiff said both he and trump should actually have a cognitive test, but he was also concerned about he was asked, how would you feel if you lost to former president trump? and president biden said, well, as long as i give it my all. congressman schiff said that was one of the answers that concerned him. the most. so i thought that was really striking. i also asked him about vice president kamala harris. do you think she could win? do you think she could win this race convincingly? overwhelmingly, something that congressman schiff has said is necessary because this is going to be a close race. it's a deeply divided electorate, he said. yes, he does. so just a fascinating conversation that underscores democrats are waiting for president biden to make this decision, but are
7:15 am
still deeply concerned about his ability to win. indeed. and you also have another exclusive interview with jd vance, who's rumored to be on the very short list for president trump's vice presidential pick. we look forward to that interview this morning. kristen, you always have the scoop. thanks so much. thank you. we hope you join christian for this morning's meet the press as mentioned, she will have those exclusive interviews with ohio senator jd vance and california's own representative, adam schiff. if you just stick right here with us for today in the bay, meet the press is on at 8 a.m. right after this newscast. and as always, coming up in about 30 minutes from now, we'll talk to nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston for our weekly segment. we'll take a look once again at president biden's future on the democratic ticket. and whether his performance could be his downfall. back here locally, neighbors in solano county are being credited with saving homes and possibly lives.
7:16 am
during a fire on the 4th of july. it happened at night when illegal fireworks started a fire behind homes on yosemite drive in rio vista. instead of waiting for help, several neighbors, including teenagers, rushed to grab hoses and battle those flames. firefighters were tied up fighting another fire in the area, so for about 30 minutes, neighbors worked together to keep the fire at bay. one of those good samaritans, just 17 years old. he tells us he was outside with friends when they noticed the smoke and ran to help. this is a very tight community and i know a lot of people here and a lot of my friends live around here, so i don't want to just stand around as someone could be in danger. guardian angels firefighters say they do not typically encourage people to take action when fires break out, but in this case, neighbors really made a positive impact and kept that fire from spreading. well, a lot of people
7:17 am
heading to the coast to beat the heat. summer weather usually bringing visitors to monterey. but this week, local shops and restaurants on the central coast say there was a clear uptick. the heat wave, combined with the four day holiday weekend, has been a boon for business. cooler temperatures were of relief for some traveling from inland and plenty of people braving traffic on highway 17 to make it out to santa cruz. lots of company there. check out this beautiful drone shot of the santa cruz beach boardwalk. absolutely packed with visitors. beachgoers who successfully escaped the heat. perfect time now to check in with cinthia pimentel for a look at our microclimate forecast. microclimates, indeed. oh yeah, there's always somewhere to escape. thank goodness. 3040 degree difference as we saw. you know, the peak of that heat yesterday. the better news for today is we're going to push those numbers back just a little bit. and into the next couple of days. thank goodness
7:18 am
indeed. we start off with that fog blanketing the golden gate bridge, a prime example of microclimate number one. but you drive up into san rafael, bright and sunny start for the last day of the marin county fair and over on into walnut creek again, clear blue skies, mild temperatures. i've got you at 64 and down into 67. in san jose, a bit more mild. dublin 70 degrees. so it is definitely another warm start to our day out there in the tri valley. and we continue with the pink on our screen. that excessive heat warning until wednesday. but as we tune back these numbers a little bit, we could be seeing this expire. so tune in tomorrow and tuesday as we update this a little bit excess that heat advisory around the immediate bay. but our numbers today as we go on and talk about what we're going to do for our sunday. yes, it will be another warm day, but not warming up as fast as yesterday. by noontime, we're seeing some 80s up there in the north bay to some upper 80s east
7:19 am
bay, and down into the south bay. we've got a few 90s los gatos 93 for lunchtime, but check out the peninsula and the coast 60s and some low 70s for san mateo. and we're taking it into the afternoon, where we're once again going to see that marine layer along the coastline, providing that relief for people that are escaping those triple digits in vacavill, ukiah, those upper 90s there in livermore, and some 80s for moraga down into fremont. the good news is we're going to feel more of that relief. our natural ac is back as we go on, even into our late sunday, monday, tuesday, as those clouds are pushing back in providing that relief into our inland valleys, we're also going to feel that breeze coming in once again. so some minor cooling as we go on into monday and tuesday, we're going to get rid of some one hundreds here on the map as we go on. still talking about really hot temperatures. of course, as we move on into the extremes of our region. but we're going to do upper 80s up there in santa rosa, some low 90s in concord, 79 in hayward. and we'll do 95 in los gatos. so
7:20 am
no more of that extreme heat for tuesday. slightly cooler with that coastal influence here. but still talking about some high fire danger on our coast, on our hills of the east bay, north bay and the south bay. by wednesday, we do have to rebound them a little bit as we look at a bit of a heat spike wednesday on into thursday, and you'll feel that in san francisco, where we cool down these numbers a little bit, but then bump them up midweek into those mid 70s and into our inland valleys. we do bring those numbers down into the low 90s. still very hot for some people, so continue to take those life saving measures there and into the middle parts of the week. we could bump them up into those one hundreds there. wednesday, thursday and then looking into next weekend, could be looking at a bit of a change in our fronts that will bring them down just once again. so we're kind of on a bumpy road, but we're out of the major heat for sure. thank goodness. cynthia, some good news there it is, 20 past the hour right now.
7:21 am
we have much more ahead on today in the bay. coming up, steve kirsch.
7:22 am
7:23 am
the heat. the rookies and second year players from golden state dominated miami in a 39 point blowout victory. ■as for head coach steve kerr and stephen curry, there in las vegas with usa basketball, the team is practicing for the first time this weekend as they gear up for paris. but before talking, olympics, kerr gives a shout out to klay thompson, who was part of four nba titles in 13 seasons with the dubs before recently signing a free agent contract with dallas. these things rarely go like, you know, like you want where you get to draw it up and execute it and everybody goes out together. we were hoping
7:24 am
that could happen, but it didn', and, you know we wish klay well, but we love him. and we'll miss him. and klay if you're watching thank you for everything. it's a hockey a milestone weekend in the history of the san jose sharks. the number one overall pick in the nhl draft has decided he is joining team teal macklin. celebrini signed his rookie contract. it is a standard three year entry level deal. this means the 18 year old center is not returning to college at boston university, and we will become a foundational piece to the sharks rebuild, and they can use all the help they can get. they've missed the playoffs for the past five seasons. it's something that i've dreamed of ever since i was a kid playing in the nhl, and, the debut is definitely going to be very exciting and i can't wait for it. every message that i got is, is all just about how excited, they are to see to see not only me, but, the whole young core that we have and, and
7:25 am
the guys that we brought in and, it finally it feels like it feels like we're moving in the right direction to baseball. giants in cleveland. rough start for giants pitcher kyle harrison. he gave up three runs in the first. then in the second, stephen kwan tagged him for a solo home run. and just like that, it is four nothing. the giants showing some fight in the fifth, the orange and black pulling off the double steal. matt chapman scores to make it a one run game, but the guardians blast a home run in the sixth and that turns out to be the difference. cleveland wins it 5 to 4. back here at home at the coliseum, the a's putting on a power show against baltimore. bottom one brent rooker strokes the deep three. it's his 18th home run of the season that opens the floodgates. the a's went yard for four more times, for a total of five home runs in the game. the a's hammered the o's 19 to 8. played forward. not all gets through. oh, what a save. big bay fc could not get
7:26 am
by aubrey kingsbury. the washington keeper stopped all five of bay fc's shots on goal. the spirit blank bay fc three nil. it's just the fourth time bay fc has been held scoreless in 19 matches this season. that's a look at your morning sports i'm anthony flores for today in the bay. thanks anthony. it is almost 26 past the hour on your sunday morning. we have much more ahead on today in the bay. coming up the annual hill bomb going on. after all, sfpd was there, but the skateboarders managed to pull off their event without a hitch. we'll take you there. and don't try this at home. firefighters say not to fight your own fires, but these bay area teens proved heroic when they rushed to save their neighbors after fireworks sparked a fire july 7th.
7:27 am
7:28 am
7:29 am
we are taking this gorgeous look outside. what a tranquil view in los gatos at vasona lake county park on a beautiful sunday morning full of sunshine. if you ever go there for christmas lights, it's a great time. thank you so much for joining us. i'm kira klapper cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast. that was a beautiful look this morning at the sunshine there. but as always san francisco behind you totally socked in with fog. san francisco is saying, you know what, the heat. not for me. we're waking up there, temperatures 58 degrees, and we are seeing the bridge socked in with that cloud cover that's also making visibility a bit harder up there in the north bay as well. so just be careful with those changes there in petaluma. sunny and mild, 70 in dublin to 67 in bright skies in san jose. but let me take you through this hour by hour forecast for yountville, because this is one of the places where i'm going to
7:30 am
pull you out of the 100 for the for the day. we go on into noontime 88 degrees and into the afternoon. yes, it's going to be another warm day as we are still under that excessive heat warning temperatures at 98 and not much relief there. as we go on into the overnight hours. but i promise more is to come, as we might pull back on that excessive heat warning as we go on into tomorrow and tuesday with some of that cooling, slightly cooler temperatures will feel that relief. but again into midweek we're going to bump them up just a little bit. but there is a little bit of an end in sight to this extreme heat. we'll talk about that coming up in about ten minutes. keir, back to you and in sight. sounds good cynthia. thanks. well, that heat mixed with our dry conditions means fire danger is high. and firefighters across the bay area have been busy fighting several wildfires in sonoma county. crews quickly knocked down a grass fire yesterday morning. the pocket fire broke out around 1130. this was about five miles north of geyserville. it burned
7:31 am
about 11 acres before crews got it under control. now to santa barbara county, where a huge fire near zaca lake continues to grow. the lake fire has scorched more than 13,000 acres. that's up from 12,000 yesterday. it sparked friday night in the los padres national forest, northeast of los olivos. firefighters helped evacuate people from the lake resort there, but flames continue to burn through dry grass and brus. there is good news for some people in butte county, cal fire says the thompson fire did not grow overnight. that fire has burned more than 3700 acres near oroville. it is 79% contained. this morning. firefighters say they are working to build up control lines, putting out hot spots all evacuation orders have been lifted. people are able to start returning home. people who live southeast of placerville had to evacuate yesterday because of a new wildfire there.
7:32 am
the pay fire in el dorado county stands at 77 acres. it ignited around two yesterday afternoon, noon. that's south of highway 50 on the way to lake tahoe. this steep, wooded terrain and hot weather caused challenges for fire crews. the fire also disrupted services at the placerville airport. you can see there aircraft grounded because flames burned dangerously close to the runway overnight. containment stood at 5% as this heat wave continues, you can get our latest alerts and updates on our nbc bay area app. just scan the qr code on your screen. if you already have the app that will take you straight to our weather page. if not, it will take you to your app store to download the app. new this morning, a magnitude 3.1 earthquake rattling in and around hollister. that's about 40 miles south of san jose. it hit around two this morning, according to the usgs. people felt it as far away as salinas. that's about 20 miles southwest.
7:33 am
no reports of any damage. yesterday police in san francisco barricaded dolores street to prevent an expected hill bomb event, but skateboarders wound up moving the event not too far away. you might recall, last year we reported on police and skateboarders clashing, muni trains vandalized, about 100 people arrested. there is ongoing litigation over how police responded last year, which is why sfpd barricaded the steep street this year. skaters said they were disappointed, but ultimately gathered near a church street instead. that's just on the other side of dolores park. they said they'd rather see the city use its resources to support the event more organized, so we can actually have fun and make it more safe for the skaters. little rowdy back then, like there was, some skaters were feeding and it wasn't like part of the skate culture at all. the police did not stop skating down
7:34 am
church street. hundreds of people came down to watch the skaters go fast down that hill. it all went off peacefully. people in solano county are being credited with saving homes and possibly lives. during a 4th of july fire on the night of the fourth, illegal fireworks started a fire behind homes on yosemite drive. this is in rio vista. instead of waiting for help, several neighbors, including teenagers, rushed to grab hoses and battle the flames. firefighters were tied up fighting another fire nearby, so for about 30 minutes, neighbors worked together to keep the fire at bay. one of the good samaritans was just 17, he tells us he was outside when they noticed the smoke and ran to help. this is a very tight community and i know a lot of people here, and a lot of my friends live around here, so i don't want to just stand around as someone could be in danger. firefighters say they do not
7:35 am
typically encourage people to take action when fires break out, but in this case, those neighbors really made a positive impact. keeping that fire from spreading. and we have new details this morning about this fire at the brand new courthouse, which is still under construction in santa rosa. it was a costly mistake that ignited that fire. firefighters tell nbc bay area that flammable material was improperly left in a plastic debris bin on the roof of the new hall of justice. that garbage caught fire and spread to wood atop the construction project. firefighters had to use a ladder truck to get up to the fire as it spread from the roof down to the sixth floor. we're going to turn now to the middle east, where at least 16 people were killed in an israeli strike on a school sheltering displaced palestinian families in central gaza on saturday. that's
7:36 am
according to the palestinian health ministry. more than 50 others were reportedly injured in the attack. the israel defense forces said it took precautions to minimize risk to civilians before it targeted the targeted gunmen. they say the gunmen were using the area as a hideout to plan and carry out attacks against israeli soldiers. hamas has denied that claim. by the way, today marks nine months since the violent raid into israel on october 7th. nbc's matt bradley is in rafah to report on the ongoing efforts to root out hamas forces. i'm in the city of rafah, which is right abutting the border with egypt in the southern gaza strip. i've been here a couple of times before, but now the city is completely unrecognizable, and it was only a couple of months ago that this was really considered the last safe haven for palestinians here. there's still a lot of shooting that's going on here.
7:37 am
according to the idf, one of the main challenges they're facing here is a highway of tunnels that run underneath the border with egypt, which is only just a couple of meters behind the camera here, all the way underneath here into rafah, which then connects to another tunnel system that runs further into the gaza strip. and it's been carrying in contraband and weapons for years now. and that's one of the things that they're very carefully trying to dismantle. the idf have said, you can hear there's still a lot of shooting going on. the idf have said they're entering into a third phase or a phase c of their fight in the gaza strip. that is kind of elusive. we're still hearing, as you can hear a lot of fighting. there's a lot of action and a lot of destruction that still is going on. hamas, according to the israelis, according to the idf, is still very much active here. matt bradley, nbc news, rafah, the gaza strip i'm hoping, matt, stay safe out there. back here in the u.s, we have a live look
7:38 am
at corpus christi, texas. this is where people are preparing for the arrival of tropical storm beryl. it's expected to strengthen back into a hurricane and slam into texas tomorrow morning. nbc's priscilla thompson reports from galveston. reporter residents along the texas gulf coast bracing for beryl's wrath. reporter in galveston, empty store shelves at some supermarkets as residents prepare to ride out the storm. are you doing anything extra to prepare? we just buy some water at the grocery store. reporter hundreds of miles down the coast in corpus christi, cars lined up for sandbags. the city running out of all 10,000. in less than an hour, you're going to be putting them in front of the garage and then. and then lining the doors with them. here's why forecasters are so concerned about beryl making landfall. it could bring 4 to 6ft of storm surge to the texas coast. why is
7:39 am
that so dangerous? it's wind pushing the water inland. at four feet. it can swamp evacuation routes, and cars can start floating at six feet. the risk of injury and death goes up as chemicals, debris and downed power lines are pushed into the rising water. barrels already ripped a deadly path of destruction as it tore through the caribbean this week, burning buildings, homes and boats smashed by ferocious winds and waves. mexico's yucatan peninsula battered, too. in cancun, the storm stranding passengers desperate to get hom. back in texas, residents on edge and uncertain about what's ahea. that was priscilla thompson reporting for us back here in the bay area. it has been more than a week since the ransomware attack crippled a bay area based credit union, patelco. it's headquartered in dublin in the

east bay. it has restored some services like atms and venmo, but customers say they still can't check their balance or use the credit union app for transactions. last week, patelco told customers that their money is safe, but it hasn't given customers a timeline for when all services will be restored. security experts tell nbc bay area that customers private information may be at risk. hackers their main goal is to get this information, and this is going to do two things for them. number one, they can sell it in the dark web. number two, they can use it. use this information to access other accounts. you know, of connected to the credit union account. that expert recommends you monitor your credit to make sure there are no new accounts opened in your name. also, be sure to change any passwords on accounts connected to your patel account if you are a patelco cuerhere's what services

governor gavin newsom in pennsylvania yesterday continuing to campaign on behalf of president biden. newsom, you see there in bucks county stumping for the president's reelection. the biden camp posted these photos saying it was nearly 100 degrees, but supporters still showed up. the longtime critic of trump framed the race between the president and the former president as a choice between competence and chaos. and we continue to follow the fallout. since president biden's debate performance a week and a half ago. and as i discussed with kristen welker, the unconvincing interview, biden gave on friday, calls are growing for the president to step down as the nominee. nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston joins me on set. hi, larry, as always, great to see you. the question so many are asking is this just a bad moment, a blip on the radar, you know, kind of thing for the president? or is this a systemic problem for the democrats as a

whole? they're asking you you're asking it, i'm asking it. you know, keir, we've got we've got three types of people here. number one, the person who said it's a disaster. number two, the person said, give the guy a break. and number three, and i think this is the most important part, the people who are on the fence and their numbers are large. you put that all together. this thing is so fluid, you know, day by day and it's really hard to get our arms around it. so people are sort of coming out of the woodwork anonymously saying, now the american people are seeing what they've seen behind the scenes in the biden camp for the last two and a half years. so what was once an in-house concern is now being made, you know, known to the voter universe. so, you know, is that the general sense of how people feel is like, whoa, you know, there are a million polls out there. one after another. so we really don't know exactly. but here's a poll i picked that was asked the day after the meeting, the

debate. and i think it's so telling. if you look on the left column, the question is asked to all voters, what do you think? should biden stay or should he go? and you can see just about half say, you know, it's time for him to go. and if you go to the right column, it's what about democrats? what do they say? well, only 29% think he should go. therein lies the problem. the democrats think at least half of them say, no. stick around. we want you. we need you. but they know that they can't win the presidency with only democratic votes. they need republican votes to they need independence. and so the question is, what do you do? and that's what's churning in so many minds of the democratic leadership right now. yeah. and what are they calling it? the double haters. the people who don't even want to vote for either party. so trump the trump camp people have noticed, has been unusually quiet. what do you what say you? first of all, you kind of wonder what's going

on. donald trump, he always wants to say something about anything and oftentimes about nothing. nothing from trump. why? he wants the focus to be on biden. he wants the focus to be on the democrats. he doesn't want to take up any of that air out there. let them struggle, let them fall, let them do whatever as long as it's not something that's harmful to trump and he doesn't think it is. but the problem, of course, is that we've already forgotten about not only biden's terrible performance on that debate, but trump's atrocious performance as well. there hasn't been a lot of light on that, but fact checkers found three dozen or more lies that he took, and that's when he didn't. he attempted to answer questions in entirely different ways from when they were asked. so we're looking at two problems here. one, the problem of biden, who is really a cause of concern for many democrats. two, the problem of trump, which remains a problem. and that's where you get the double haters. that's where you get people saying, what am i going to do here? what kind of choice do i have? and that's the dilemma for the american people. and it's not
