around. plus, breaking news off the coast of texas, where hurricane beryl is making landfall. the path of destruction. it's leaving behind as the storm enters the u.s. and the pressure on president biden intensifying, more democrats want biden to drop out of the election in the wake of that debate, performance. the way the president is responding to his critics this morning, this is today in the bay. here we go monday morning. and good morning to you all. i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we'll check that monday morning commute with mike. lots of folks headed back to work after an extended holiday. hope you had a good one. it's been hot in the bay area. it has. and when we look at today's temperatures in our regular standards, this will be a hot day. but just after what we've had recently, this is a little bit of a cooldown and a break from that excessive heat. it will be slightly cooler today and tomorrow, but it will be getting hotter again midweek. it's probably not what you want
6:02 am
to hear, but we can just enjoy the cool down while we have it. as we're getting started this morning, we're going to take a look at oakland, where we are going to see temperatures go from low 60s to upper 60s at 1:00, and it's going to be nice to only make it into the 70s for today. but then as we look at what's average and what we're going to see for our high temperature, santa rosa is usually seeing temperatures around 84 for this date. but we're headed up to 91, and concord will reach a high of 94. these temperatures will not set a new record, but will definitely be above what we typically see for this date with livermore is high up to 95 degrees. san jose, our average high temperature for this date is 81, but we'll be up to 88 degrees. so a heat advisory continues. we'll talk about the excessive heat returning in a few minutes. and mike, you're saying the commuters have returned? yeah, we're back for the morning commute. the backup at the bay bridge. the metering lights were turned on and about the regular time, about 536, i

think they recorded today. we're looking at that mild build and slowing into san francisco. so, you know, there's more volume there. highway 37 and highway four both showing your traditional pattern. there may be some fog around the benicia bridge. so chp did say watch those speeds across the span. we have more slowing out of the altamont pass down vasco road. and the south bay did show that first burst that we typically see. back to you. thank you very much, mike. at 602, we begin this hour with developing news in the sierra. that is where firefighters are trying to stop a fire burning near soda springs road off of interstate 80, in the tahoe national forest. as of this morning, the royal fire has burned 169 acres. it's about 15 miles outside of truckee. cal fire initially said it may have started from a runaway campfire, but they later deleted the post and say the cause is still not clear. the state's largest fire right now is burning in santa barbara county, and it is threatening michael jackson's neverland ranch. flames have now burned more than 18,000 acres since friday near the town of

los olivos, north of santa barbara. one structure is damaged. firefighters are making some progress. the fire is nearly 8% contained. are you prepared in case of a wildfire or any other emergency? stick around ahead. at 625, our consumer team is breaking down what you should pack in a go bag. and even if you already have one, some tips on how to keep that go bag up to date. well, turning now to decision 2024 and president joe biden, well, he is facing scrutiny over his reelection bid. democrats continue to fight over whether he should stay in the race. this is after last month's poor debate performance. now, the president spent the weekend trying to reassure party member, donors and voters that he has what it takes to beat former president donald trump. in november, governor gavin newsom planning a campaign in new hampshire today on behalf of president biden today in the bay's brie jackson live from washington with us this morning. and brie, the president faces another major hurdle there. this

is a test. as lawmakers return to the hill today. that's right. good morning marcus. and so during a phone call sunday for more democrats in congress told their colleagues that they believe president biden should step aside now, president biden is expected to call more lawmakers this week after touching base with about 20 of them last week, including senate majority leader chuck schumer and house minority leader hakeem jeffries. the president is working to reassure democrats on capitol hill that their concerns are being heard. my name is joe biden. i'm facing intense pressure to prove himself. president biden campaigned in pennsylvania sunday seeking to fight off criticism about his chances of winning reelection. i've been doing this a long time and i, honest to god, have never more optimistic about america's future if we stick together. but members of his own party have their doubts. nearly a dozen
6:06 am
house democrats have called on biden to drop out of the presidential race after concerns about the 81 year old's poor debate performance. others are standing firmly behind him. what i do think the president needs to decide is can he put those concerns aside? can he demonstrate to the american people that what happened on the debate stage was an aberration? i know what it's like to have a rough debate, and i'm standing right here, you know, as your senator. and i want to just say how i'm so proud i am to stand with the president, the biden campaign is still working to convince the public that he's capable of leading the country for four more years. i think he's done a great job. however, i think that now's the time for joe biden to be the statesman stepped down. i'm still feeling good about joe biden. i find it fascinating that nobody's asking for his opponent, who's almost as old as he is. almost. you

know, mentally, barely confused, not to step down or step aside. president biden insists he's staying in the fight, and president biden faces another big test this week. he will host major world leaders for a nato summit here in washington, d.c. that begins on tuesday. marcus packed schedule and a lot of eyes watching brie jackson in washington this morning. bree, thank you. well, now to a follow up. a bay area based credit union says it has established its network, stabilized it, and it's processing transactions. again, it comes after a ransomware attack crippled the patelco credit union service disruption started last saturday. customers are still unable to see account balances, use mobile banking, even cash checks. the credit union says it's now processing transactions, and customers will soon be able to see their account balances. in a statement, the ceo said in part, quote, i can't share an exact date when we'll be back to
6:08 am
business as usual, but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. the company continues to reassure customers their money is safe. 607 for you this morning we have some breaking news right now in texas. this is where hurricane beryl is making landfall as a category one storm. here's a look along the gulf coast. this is in freeport. you can see crews there doing what they need to do to keep everything safe out there. so that storm's eye crossing over the town of matagorda, about 40 miles southwest of galveston. and some daylight video there from sergeant beach, about 15 miles east. overnight video from bay city, texas, about 15 miles north. hundreds of thousands already without power. now that storm is said to be saturating houston, where there is a big flooding concern. wow really? carrie's been tracking the path of this storm as well. and where it's gone and where it's headed. yeah, it's moved a little bit farther north than what was expected. so it had time to
6:09 am
regain some strength out over the gulf. and now has made that second landfall in texas. and the reason why they were concerned about flooding in houston is because the storm has slowed down and is expected to bring 15in of rainfall. so that's really heavy and catastrophic flooding that they're expecting in those areas as it continues to move farther off towards the north and east. and this storm is still a category one hurricane, even though it's over land, it's producing winds at 75mph and is only moving at 12mph. so it's going to take a while before it moves out of that area. and then it begins kind of a northeasterly track across eastern texas into arkansas, and then farther off towards the north and east. so we'll continue to monitor those impacts in that region today as we're starting out with another very warm day, and we're going to have our temperatures going from low 60s in san jose to reaching into the upper 80s for this afternoon. and it's above normal, but there will be some
6:10 am
spots that are still going to be very hot in the upper 90s for morgan hill and then in the triple digits farther to the north. but we definitely have a wide range in temperatures that only be in the 60s and half moon bay, as that fog lingers throughout much of the morning into the afternoon, we will have another heat up in our valley. temperatures by midweek. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. mike's been watching where we can fill up for a little bit less. yeah. in fact, the friends at gasbuddy, where we're talking about the reporting there and you can give those reports as well, and they're telling us that in san jose, year over year, we're about six, 6.5% better as far as those prices go. and compared to last month, we're about 27% better. so that's great. we do have a new week and a new best in san jose. it's 377. in the holiday spirit, the 76 remember we celebrated last week and 77 is what we celebrate at tully. that's the 76 station. we're looking at contra costa counties included with 399 all around concord. we'll do a roll call for national on clayton road today. and meanwhile in mill

valley, the north bay, the best is 419 at arco on redwood highway. again, all the information, including those comparisons, come to us resources at gasbuddy.com on the roadway, we're looking at a smooth flow of traffic. we do have a return to the commute. we see the altamont pass, the south bay, traditional patterns that we didn't really see last week, even on the tuesday. but this is monday, starting with highway four, highway 37, and the bay bridge, all showing your traditional slowing back to you. all right. thanks, mike. a popular farmers market in danger of closing ahead on today in the bay the critical meeting happening today that may decide its fate and the uncertain future for vendors. we'll get an update from nasa this week as to when those astronauts can finally come home. let's go out to the futures this morning. wall street back open after a shortened workweek looks like a positive open. how many of these you selling per day? 500. 500. the pickle sandwich we saw it on tiktok. my teenage daughter sent me here today to get this sandwich. people have been waiting on line for a half hour,

cool and we're looking at pleasant hill and our temperature trend, it's still going to be a hot afternoon for parts of the bay area, and it's also going to get even hotter midweek. we'll talk about the range in our temperatures as we go through this week, coming up in a few minutes, and we are looking at the bridge, richmond over to san rafael, the volume building, and there's more traffic on the roads, including here, than there was last week. we are seeing a slightly different pattern than last week, but we'll show you where the norms are for the speed sensors coming up. well good morning. very happy monday to you. you may have had the day off on friday. i did when we got those jobs numbers showing the economy still strong. but investors are hoping the fed will lower interest rates. meetings, interest rates at an upcoming meeting. we get important inflation data later this week, and the fed chairman speaks later this week as well. boeing on sunday accepted a criminal plea deal with the us government, accepting charges that its test pilots conspired
6:16 am
to keep important information about the 737 max redesign away from government regulators. the plea deal calls for boeing to pay an additional $243 million in fines and accept an independent safety observer. we'll also get an update on that. boeing starliner still attached to the international space station. it and the astronauts who wrote it up to the space station are not stuck, says nasa. as we've discussed before, there's a problem with the capsules service module, which is not used in the return to earth. it's disposed of, but that means if they're going to figure out what's wrong with it, they got to stay in space. one nasa scientist to name said. it's like a problem with your camper trailer. you're not stuck in tahoe. if your trailer has a problem, you can just leave it and drive home. but for now, the two astronauts are staying where they are. there's plenty of food and oxygen. also, their astronauts over the weekend,

three nasa volunteers walked out of a year long isolation to simulate what it would be like to live on mars. here's the mission commander, as she saw people and took a breath of fresh air. hello. it's actually just so wonderful to be able to say hello to you all. a little giddy also, over the long holiday weekend, we checked in with steve endicott, who lost his election for parliament in the united kingdom. you may remember we showed him you to him. he's the guy who promised to do whatever an i that he had developed, told him to do so. vote. however, the i told him to vote. there's the i on the left. endicott use comments and ideas from his constituency to program the i. so he said it would always act in the best interest of voters. well, he got crushed in the polls with decimal 3% of the vote, which is you know that's tough. yeah. now the local green party had won that seat before and they won it
6:18 am
again. so maybe that was just the, you know, the dominant party. but 174 votes, i think he got it was a unique approach, a very unique approach that didn't pay off. it didn't work. i was it didn't work so far. maybe in 20 years. who knows. all right. thanks, scott. you bet. community college leaders in the south bay plan to meet tonight as the future of a longtime cupertino's farmer market remains in jeopardy. it operates at de anza college on sundays, but as we reported, the foothill de anza community college district recently solicited new bids from other farmers markets associations. leaders of the west coast farmers market association are worried it's 50. vendors won't have a place to sell their goods for the summer. that's because even if it wins the bid, it won't be finalized until september. currently, the topic is not on the trustees meeting agenda today, but the executive director of the west coast farmers market association plans to attend. well, trending this morning, an unusual

sandwich that's going viral, generating a huge line at the place where it all started. and these days everyone is talking about this pickled sandwich here. so it's leading to those long lines you see right there. this is around the block in long island, new york. this is the deli there. this is where it all started. so the sandwich has no bread, as you see, but instead giant pickles play a role of the role. the deli owner says that he can't keep the keep these sandwiches in the store because he can't keep up with the orders. oh wow. we made ten today. the next day came. oh wow. we made 20. we made 30. then it was like we made 70. then i'm calling the boar's head guy directly. like i need more pails of pickles. i need more pails of pickles. these. those large pickles. so look, the deli first introduced its pickled sandwich in january. took off four months later when the sister of the cashier posted it on tiktok. no surprise there. that video where she tried it and loved it. the video has been viewed more than 4 million
6:20 am
times, and the people are driving hours to just get a taste of that pickle. wow. they're all puffy from the sodium intake. that's plenty of water it takes. is someone to post something on tiktok and you know it is so true. a friend of ours has a like a coffee place in southern california, and they posted something and the lines are wow, for miles now you got to have something unique though. oh yeah. yeah, exactly. yeah. because you can't get pickles anywhere, right? it can make that a whole big pickle to. all right. so let's get started this morning we are going to see a big range in our temperatures across the bay area with our microclimates anywhere from 50s and low 60s near the coast to over 100 degrees in parts of the bay. but at least we do have a cool morning as you're heading out for that walk in foster city. a little bit cloudy, foggy at times, but it will be clearing out by 8 to 9:00, and the rest of the day, a steady trend of some mild temperatures that will be gradually warming up for this afternoon. we're
6:21 am
staying in the 70s here for the peninsula, but as you make your way into the tri-valley and to the south county, as well as the north bay, it is going to be hot once again. and we do have a heat advisory that continues. it's been extended through friday. so basically all week long it's going to be very warm. but this is our break today as well as tomorrow. with temperatures pretty widespread in the 80s and low 90s for the inland areas. but then look at how hot it gets on wednesday, just when we were hoping to be done with this heat, it just ramps back up. it comes back with highs over 100 degrees for concord livermore. morgan hill will be 101 on wednesday, and we'll also see upper 90s and over 100 degrees for parts of the north bay. so looking ahead, actually our hottest day is going to be on thursday. and then after that we go into our weekend with a nice little break temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s, which is still above normal. but i think we'll take it after all of this heat. one other thing we'll be
6:22 am
watching as those temperatures come down for the weekend will be a surge in humidity. this green shows a high amount of moisture in the atmosphere, and this time of year, moisture higher up could mean some thunderstorm chances as well as some lightning that could spark some new fires. so we'll have to closely monitor that for the weekend, especially for the sierra. but here at home, it's just the heat that we'll have to deal with over these next few days. the hottest day on thursday will be bracing for that slightly lower for the weekend, but it won't be as hot in san francisco here. 60s and 70s throughout much of the week. mike, you're seeing a slightly slower build at the bay bridge, but it is here more than the last week. more volume here, filling in back to the end of the parking lot and continuing to grow there. same thing for the bridge out of richmond. just starting to see more slowing. highway 37. highway four showing your slower patterns. typical there in the bill through the east bay as well. back to you. thank you. mike 622 this morning. coming up next, nbc bay area responds. it's possible

your house, what do you need to grab that is essential? let's walk through that together using items that cal fire the san francisco fire department and fema recommend. start with a paper map to evacuate because if the power goes out, cellular gps might not work. you might want to consider setting a predetermined meeting point for your family and printed directions to get there, especially if there are new drivers in your family. pack medicine for at least a few days. include some clothing and shoes. comfortable layers would be ideal. you'll want phone chargers, car charger, wall charger, maybe even a battery backup. pack some cash because credit card readers and atms might go down. consider a radio a flashlight, and batteries. add toiletries plus some nonperishable food and water. remember your pets. conrad here has his own go bag, which has some food, some water, some medicine and toys to keep him occupied. so what else should we add? a first aid kit and a blanket. so should someone be

injured in your family that you have some immediate way to give them some care? keeping some important paperwork is important too, like photocopies of your id as well as copies of your homeowners or renters insurance policy. we recommend you upload those things to the cloud for safe keeping, but you might not be able to access those right away, so keep those hard copies in your go bag. good advice. thanks so much. it is 626. ahead at 630. we're tracking wild weather conditions from the bay area heat to a hurricane that just made landfall on the gulf coast. we'll take you there. live for a firsthand look at the damage. plus, here in the bay area, a temporary break from those triple digit temps. the parks here in the east bay that have reopened as a result. stay with us. you're watching today in the b but

go. monday morning. but the team is back together. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia and i'm marcus washington. let's all take a live look outside across the bay area this morning. already warming up out there, but not as much as we've seen over the past week or so. those triple digits when it comes to the heat. meteorologist kari hall, of course, been tracking all of that. the heat wave has hit day seven, but we're seeing a cooldown. i mean, cooldown is relative to peano, but but for us, it really is a cooldown, right? you know, on a normal day, we would be like, oh, it's going to be hot today. but this time we're saying this is our break and we are starting out with a live look outside as we are nice and cool for the start of our morning, and it will be slightly cooler as we go into tomorrow as well. the excessive heat warning comes back. the heat advisory continues and it gets hotter by the middle of the week. probably not what we want to hear as we take a look at livermore and our trend today here, it's going to be warming up quickly, going from 65 at
6:32 am
8:00 to noontime temperature of 87, and then in the low to mid 90s for the afternoon. but that's better than the 110 we had over the weekend. right. so today we're seeing temperatures that are hot, but not as extreme. and we'll be 91 for a high today in napa and santa rosa, san francisco is keeping it cool with some low 70s. and once again that break continues tomorrow as well. but we'll talk about the ramp up in the heat once again midweek. that's coming up in the full microclimate forecast. all right. thanks so much kari. and as garrett was just saying look we are going to get a break from this heat a little bit a short break that is from the triple digit temperatures. but it is still going to be hot today in the bay's bob redell joins us live from sunol, where a number of parks are reopening. and bob, folks will still need to be pretty careful out there in the heat. you are correct. good morning to laura marcus. you might recall last tuesday, east bay regional parks district shut down pleasanton ridge behind me in about 30 other locations throughout the east bay because
6:33 am
of not only the excessive heat, but the wildfire danger. but they did reopen these parks yesterday. we have people who are returning to pleasanton ridge this morning. there are still some restrictions, however, as people return to the pike's park, excuse me, parks to hike and bike and do other activities. for instance, no open fires or barbecues, only gas fueled stoves are allowed. people need to secure the tow chains. you don't want to have those dragging, sparking up, hitting rocks and possibly starting a fire in the dry grass, and you're only allowed to drive on designated roadways. the temperatures have dropped, the humidity has returned to a levels that made it safe to reopen our parks. and, we don't take these closures lightly. they're very important for the safety of our parklands and our communities. i know i wanted to go on a hike and, you know, everybody loves to be outdoors
6:34 am
in summertime. right? so with the parks closing, i've been wanting to go, but of course, the temperature has been way too hot for anybody to be outside and especially hiking, so i kind of looked it up before i came. well, carry a lot of water and, where where a buff that's soaked in water. last night in nearby pleasanton, the alameda county fair closed its gates for the final day of the year. unfortunately for the fair, there was a heat wave as you're well aware, that stretched through many of the prime fair going days this year, with high temps over the past week near or above 100 degrees. fair staff says the super hot days did unfortunately impact attendance, but numbers actually picked up in the evening when things cooled off to address the heat. the fair increased the number of misters and water stations and stations for sunscreen for the guests. reporting live here in sunol bob redell today in the bay. i'm sure those misters help out. thanks so much, bob. nbc

bay area's app is really going to be a great resource to stay informed of those hot temperatures. you're going to get up to the minute updates since straight to your phone. for information about weather, as well as breaking news alerts, you can download it. it is free for all devices. now to a live look in san pablo this morning where crews are cleaning up after a large water main break east bay mud now says a total of five homes were damaged along kevin road near tara hills. hills drive crews are trying to repair that pipe and clean up all the debris out there. it happened about 10:00 last night. in video, you can see the massive rush of water flowing downhill into homes. five customers now without water, and it's estimated they'll get it back at 930 this morning. it's unclear what caused that water main to break. 635 right now, boeing is agreeing to plead guilty to a fraud charge and pay a massive fine to the justice department. the accusations are boeing engineers and test pilots hid the changes to the 737 max
6:36 am
from regulators. scott mcgrew. joining us now and scott is not just the regulators. they were hiding it from also the pilots. yeah, the airline pilots remember there were two deadly crashes of 737 max airplanes where pilots involved didn't seem to understand the airplane software was designed to push the nose down software placed there. after boeing changed the design of the airplane, boeing is going to plead guilty after the government determined the company violated an agreement that had protected it from prosecution for more than three years. last week, federal prosecutors gave boeing the choice of entering a guilty plea and paying a fine or facing a trial on the felony criminal charge of conspiracy to defraud the united states. here's the ceo getting grilled on capitol hill last month with respect to the accidents where we were focused, focused, focused in the description of the changes. and they're big and they're significant across the engineering department, we're
6:37 am
focused on preventing the design problem from ever happening again. the plea deal calls for boeing to pay an additional $243 million fine, except independent safety observers in its factory as well. the boeing board has also agreed to meet with families of victims. 347 people died in two separate crashes just a few months apart in asia in 2019. marcus. all right, scott, thank you. well, now to a live look at oracle park this morning. this is where later today giants fans they will say one final goodbye to hall of famer willie mays. the team holding a public celebration of life. mays died peacefully at his home last month. the legendary giants center fielder and national mvp was 93 years old. now this event starts at 4 p.m. those fans must enter through the ballpark. this is through the willie mays plaza. those gates are going to open at 3:00. the event is free for everyone and we will be streaming the celebration of life on our website, nbcbayarea.com. you can also
6:38 am
watch it on our sister station, nbc sports bay area. breaking overnight, a live look at the gulf coast from freeport, texas, about 20 miles east from where the eye of hurricane beryl made landfall this morning as a category one storm. now, beryl is packing quite a punch. 1 million customers in the houston area are already said to not have power. yeah nbc's jay gray is along the gulf coast this morning with a look at those current conditions. well, beryl has made landfall at this point. and i want to give you an idea of the current conditions. the wind picking up as it has over the last couple of hours of spitting rain. i want you to look at the surf. it continues to be much higher than it normally is. and we're at low tide right now. high tide coming in in a bit. and this is just going to intensify all of these conditions will continue over the next several hours as this storm begins to move inland. we've seen the first of what we expect will be several tornado warnings here. that's something
6:39 am
that always comes with these storms. tornadoes can pop up as a result of this storm moving inland, and it's really going to shift from a wind situation to water. we've already seen some areas with 4 to 6in of rain. they're now going to see 2 to 4 an hour. and so flooding could be a major issue here, especially in the houston area, where they deal with flooding on a pretty regular basis just during heavy rain storms. and now you've got beryl rushing across this area. so watching closely to see how that plays out, we're beginning to see power outages across the region as well. tens of thousands without power. we expect that number to climb as well. so this is a storm that's made landfall. important to remember that doesn't mean the effects are over. in fact, in some areas it's only just beginning. this is going to continue to bring in those wind whipped bands of rain as they move through this area. and push inland and into texas. that's the latest. right now.
6:40 am
we'll continue watching things, but in port lavaca, i'm jay gray, back to you. all right. thank you very much. jay you see everything going on there? let's bring in meteorologist kari hall right now because she's actually been tracking the path of the storm. category one still strong. still very strong. and it's moving slowly when storms move slowly, they dump a lot of heavy rain. so now the flooding is the main concern. we'll see with this system as it is still a category one hurricane even over land producing winds at 75mph. but the forward movement north at 12mph could bring the possibility of over 15in of rainfall around houston. and then it begins to make more of a northeasterly track over the next few days, as it curves over parts of eastern texas into arkansas, and then farther off towards the north and east as it moves through parts of the midwest. so we'll be watching that in the impacts today and right now across the bay area.
6:41 am
we've been in the midst of this very dangerous heat wave that is easing up just a little bit today. and we're starting out with temperatures in the upper seconds for dublin. look at the fog over san francisco 57 degrees right now with the light wind. and it is 63 in san jose. after this nice cool start, it's going to still be a hot afternoon and we will see the heat advisory continue for santa rosa. we're up to 91 and usually on this date we're seeing high temperatures up to about 84. so we're well above normal, but we're not expected to set any records today with livermore's high temperature up to 95. and in san jose, we'll see a high of 88 degrees. we'll talk more about high heat ahead for the middle of the week. mike, you're tracking the return of many commuters. yeah. welcome back folks. welcome back folks a lot of vacation last week. this week we have the return. not everybody, but we do see the slower spots. the richmond bridge over to san rafael, the bay bridge from oakland into san francisco, showing your typical backups in the area or maybe a little lighter than typical

slowing down the east shore freeway, now highway 37, highway four behind me shows more slowing than we had last week into walnut creek. now for southbound 680. looking ahead, the celebration of life we talked about over at oracle park. so there will be a lot of folks undoubtedly headed over to willie mays plaza, outside the park or inside the park. watch for the pedestrians. this area just off the 280 extension and king street, and maybe take caltrain. that's the best way to get in there. that's my favorite. meanwhile, the rest of the bay shows a pretty typical pattern a little more slowing down the east shore, the east bay toward the bay, san mateo bridge and san jose does show a little more slowing north 101, back to you. all right. thanks, mike. president biden refusing to drop out of the race for reelection. up next, his latest message in a letter to fellow democrats in congress as calls to grow for him to reconsider. plus, lebron james opening up about making history next season just by stepping onto the court, one of his new teammates, the exclusive interview when we watching today in th. you're

next 120 some days or so, they're going to get a real good look at who donald trump is. so biden continues to concentrate on that idea that american voters simply need to understand how many times trump doesn't tell the truth what his real motivations are, and they'll turn against him. but of course, americans already know trump very, very well, and polls show trump is more popular than the president in key states. yeah, biden sounded a bit like trump talking about the crowds. he was attracting with drawing crowds that have been really big crowds ever since the debate. not joking. even that night in the debate, we had great crowds afterwards. and so things are moving. they're moving hard now over the weekend, on a private phone call for more congressional democrats agreed biden should end his campaign and allow a different democrat to run. presumably kamala harri.

this, according to a person familiar with the call of all of them, jerry nadler, certainly the biggest name, california's adam schiff, was on meet the press sunday, where he said he supported biden and encouraged the president to keep campaigning. though our kristen welker did ask him about vice president harris. and of course, this puts loyal democrats in a spot they want to support. biden but they also want to assure americans our vice president is perfectly capable of leading. here's schiff i think the vice president would be a phenomenal president. i think she has the experience, the judgment, the leadership ability to be an extraordinary president should she win overwhelmingly. congressman, i think she very well could win overwhelmingly. but before we get into a decision about who else it should be, the president needs to make the decision, whether it's him. president biden will host nato leaders later this week at the white house. there's going to be a press conference which biden supporters have been calling for because it will be free form and unscripted. we'll see how he does. but our foreign correspondents say a lot of nato

6:51 am
once again, and it's going to be a cool day. but we've been talking so much about the heat and how bad it's been for the inland areas. as we take a look at our trend for concord here, we're starting out at a nice, cool 60 degrees. in a couple of hours it will be 65 degrees and then 69, and then 73. you see where this is headed? it's going to warm up fairly quickly for today, but not as hot as it has been. so this is our break today with 90s this afternoon. and we're going to be in the low 90s for just a few hours before it starts to come back down in time for that evening walk. it's feeling much more comfortable at sunset at 77 degrees, but that's after hitting that high of 94 today, and we're going to see a high of 99 in morgan hill. even just that, a big difference from morgan hill to san jose. and we can see that it's still going to be a mild day for the peninsula in the san francisco. but for the north bay, it's going to be hot once again, 91 in santa rosa and 106 today in ukiah. so
6:52 am
really just depending on where you are and tomorrow, we're also looking at a fairly mild day in comparison to what we've had and what's ahead. we're hitting 104 degrees in fairfield in vacaville on wednesday. it's also going to be really hot for those north bay valleys and then for san jose. we're going back to the 90s on wednesday. while morgan hill is going to see those temperatures over 100 degrees, and we are going to see that heat peaking on thursday. but then once the heat backs off, the humidity will be coming in with a surge of some monsoon moisture moving in, especially for southern california into the sierra for the weekend. when we see the high amounts of moisture that could mean some thunderstorms or some lightning, so that could increase the fire danger for the weekend. so we'll be watching that closely. the peak of the heat will be hitting the inland areas on thursday. so every day between now and then we're just going to see those temperatures going up a few degrees and then back down for the weekend. but it doesn't look
6:53 am
like it's going to be as hot in san francisco. we're going to be in the low 80s on thursday, but other than that, it's in the 60s and 70s throughout the week. mike, you're seeing a build now in the south bay. it's more subtle than we often see. but you know what? we're returning traffic flow from last week where it was very light. so 87 and 101 see some more slowing push over toward 280 connecting the two there in the south bay. we've had this crash near first and isabel, but not a problem for 580. there is more volume out of the altamont pass vasco road as well, out of contra costa county, slowing for the nimitz as you head south of 880. and remember 92 as road work today. so there will be traffic controls, folks. maybe head to the beach. back to you. thank you very much, mike. it is 652 happening now. san francisco police investigating a shooting on mission street. it happened just before 7:00 last night near mission and 16th. officers say a man was shot. we have video from citizen app. paramedics took him to the hospital with life threatening injuries. no word on how he's doing this morning or
