preventable. i think what a lot of us take for granted is we get behind the car, the wheel of the car and you drive, you go to work, you go to the store, you go on vacation. but the reality is getting behind the wheel of a vehicle. we are not even halfway into triple a's 100 deadliest days of the year, and during this time, it's important to always remember to pay attention when you get behind the wheel and put on your seatbelt. oh yeah. right. should be just a habit, a way of life. yeah. all right. 544 right now let's talk a little politics here. a prominent democrat says president biden may lose to donald trump in a landslide. yeah. scott mcgrew is here to talk about colorado senator michael bennet. he originally had said that in private. in private. but you know what? to his credit, when he was asked about that comment on cnn, he said, yeah, he had said it, not just that trump may win in a landslide, but that republicans

may take both the house and the senate in november. here's a clip of that interview. donald trump is on track, i think, to win this election and maybe win it by a landslide and take with him the senate and the house. so for me, this isn't a question about polling. it's not a question about politics. it's a moral question about the future of our country. and i think it's critically important for us to come to grips with what we face. if together, we put this country on the path of electing donald trump again. earlier this week, president biden sent a letter to democrats firmly stating he was running and that should be the end of it. but brand new this morning on morning joe, former speaker of the house nancy pelosi made it sound like this is all very much still up in the air. it's up to the president to decide if he is going to run. we're all encouraging him to
5:47 am
make that decision because time is running short. the television network abc, acknowledging its political director, george stephanopoulos, made an off hand comment to a person on the street that he didn't think joe biden could serve four more years. the comment recorded, first reported by tmz. stephanopoulos later said, quote, earlier today, i responded to a passerby, and i shouldn't have. in washington, the nato summit continues celebrating 75 years of the alliance. one of the main subjects, ukraine ukrainian president zelensky, perhaps reading ahead to the election, asking for more weapons, fewer restrictions on those weapons sooner rather than later. here's president biden at that same summit in the coming months, the united states and our partners intend to provide ukraine with dozens of additional tactical air defense systems. the united states will make sure that when we export critical air defense interceptors, ukraine goes to

the front of the line, vice president kamala harris campaigned tuesday in nevada. former president trump was in florida, brought her up in a speech, something he doesn't normally do. meanwhile, the radical left democrat party is divided in chaos, and having a full scale breakdown all because they can't decide which of their candidates is more unfit to be president. sleepy crooked joe biden or laughing kamala laughing. all right, well, trump also mentioned marco rubio a number of times. it makes sense. he's the local senator. he was at the speech. in the past, trump has called rubio little marco, a lightweight and a choke artist. but rubio is now one of three top choices, perhaps the top choice for vice presidential candidacy. kyra. and we are waiting with bated breath for that announcement. scott, thanks so much. i'm going to turn now

to state politics, a live look at the state capitol, where lawmakers this week are nailing down specifics for a $10 billion school construction bond measure to be on the november ballot. proposition two would increase the state's matching money for school construction and expand the number of districts qualifying for full 100% funding. a senate committee on monday voted unanimously to support it. an assembly committee is expected to hold a similar vote today, but opponents fear the funding may be slanted to districts with the highest property values they are threatening legal action. this week's hearings are meant to address those equity concerns. 548 right now, the countdown is on. look at that. 16 days. yeah just about two weeks away from the start of the summer olympic games in paris, france, the u.s. women's water polo team will be looking for redemption after losing to hungary in their final home game before they head to paris. this team has won three

gold medals. new sponsor flavor flav was at cal berkeley for last night's game. how's that for fun? goalkeeper ashley johnson had a record ten saves in the cage, but hungary came out on top, winning it ten eight. well, only on nbc bay area. our cameras were the only ones invited to practice before the game yesterday. sorry. yeah, look at that. right. play by play. putting on a little suit. water polo cap, getting in the water there. he's offered to sponsor the women and men's team for the next five years. it all started with an instagram post from danville's maggie steffens saying women in sports needed more financial support. well now he's the official hype man for the usa. water polo, women's and men's national teams. last week, he signed that five year sponsorship deal to promote the team. and i'd say i do a great job. flavor flav to the rescue. cool. that's great. speaking of sticking with the olympics, the usa basketball team is looking to bring home its fifth straight

gold medal in the city of light. steph curry and the rest of the team are right now training in vegas. the all star lineup is being led by warriors head coach steve kerr today, team usa plans an exhibition game against canada, but kevin durant will not take the court due to a left calf strain. yesterday, the team got a surprise visit from vice president kamala harris, who was in vegas as part of a presidential campaign stop. here's the reaction from coach kerr. vice president harris was great. she told the guys how much she admired them and how they really embodied excellence. and the fact that we are going over there to try to win a gold medal for our country. i mean, having steph on the team is, is fantastic for any, any one of a number of reasons. i mean, he's obviously a brilliant player, but the comfort level that we have together, i think it helps the communication process with the rest of the team. this

morning, today's craig melvin is having his own big visit, this time with another team usa basketball teammate lebron james. he's also getting an up close look at the team's training camp in vegas. tune in to see the full story on today. that's at 7 a.m. right after today in the bay. very cool talking about playing with bronny. well, trending this morning, the creator of hamilton may be ready to give his own spin on an iconic cult classic. warriors come out to play lin-manuel miranda is reportedly close to completing his next project. it's based on the warriors, the 1979 b movie about street gangs in new york. the hope is it'll end up as a broadway musical, but first, miranda has just completed a concept album. can you dig it? well, the album is also expected to feature stars from broadway and the pop music world. that man never stops come out to

play. i bet he'll have fun with that one. what a talent. nightmares creepy. maybe. maybe we can convince him to switch it to warriors like our warriors. warriors? there you have it. all right, well, if you're going to get out and about, start early this morning or really, really late tonight. yeah, exactly. yeah, i think so. we're definitely going to have it much hotter than it has been. and we have to struggle through this heat for three more days. but i think a lot of us will be inside anyway because of the air quality. it will look hazy outside and the heat will be pretty intense for those inland areas. so for the east bay, santa clara valley, that's where we do have the worst of the air quality, unhealthy for people with any kind of asthma, breathing problems or any heart conditions. limit your time outside. as we take a live look outside in walnut creek, it's starting out with our morning marine layer moving in. that's the clouds that we see, usually keeping our temperatures cooler,
5:54 am
but it's going to clear out so quickly our temperatures will still warm up quite a bit. so we're headed for 96. in santa rosa today, our usual high temperature for this date is 84 degrees. we're up to 103 in concord today, and 102 in livermore. so you can see the valley temperatures well above normal, but not expected to set a new record. and then looking at the temperatures in the north bay in the upper 90s 98, in napa today, and we'll be in the upper seconds for san mateo. so not all of the bay area heating up, but that heat advisory and the excessive heat warning will be in effect away from the coastline. so tomorrow is the hottest day we'll have this week. 73 though, in half moon bay. but you head over to mountain view and it will be 92 degrees and 103 in dublin, 107 in concord and fairfield will hit a high of 108 degrees. then into the day on friday. it's
5:55 am
still really hot, but just not as extreme, and we may have the opportunity to get the cool mornings and the cool late evenings as well. but looking at morgan hill, we're going to have three more hot days into friday and then look at the change on saturday. upper 80s there and mid 80s on sunday. and as we stretch it out through next week, i don't see any more triple digit temperatures. so once again, we are just going to have to make it through these next few days. but this may all end with some high humidity and a surge in moisture coming in that could possibly spark off some thunderstorms. so we'll be watching out for that. right now, we're just focused on these hot temperatures with a high peaking at 108 degrees on thursday, 101 on friday, and some of our warmer spots will be in the mid 90s on saturday. but as you saw from morgan hill, will bring it back to the upper 80s and in san francisco and along the coast. we are going to have some warm weather for tomorrow, 84 degrees there, but then for the weekend, 60s and
5:56 am
70s will quickly return. mike, you were looking for something in berkeley? yeah. benny in our operations center was helping me. he's moving the camera around. we heard about some kind of a spill going on in one of the frontage roads, and i think it was right in this stretch. but you see traffic flowing just fine here and especially down the east shore freeway. so we'll keep monitoring that call. but again, westbound 80, the east shore freeway itself, it's all right. it's moving well. it's more volume heading down toward the area. there may be some more slowing. we'll turn the camera around again at the berkeley curve, because i see an unusual pattern there that might be where the activity is. there is activity. highway 37, highway four, traditional slowing spots, and a little bit of slowing toward the richmond bridge into san rafael as well. we're looking at a crash that might be affecting niles canyon. we'll talk about that if it develops into a bigger incident. the south bay does show your typical northbound 101 slowing and a crash just off capitol expressway. it's on city streets. it doesn't sound like a major issue, but if it is affecting your access to or from capital expressway, of course i'll let you know that as well. back to you. all right, mike,
5:57 am
thanks. it is 556 happening now. getting around is going to cost a little less these days for some people in the north bay. at the start of the month, petaluma transit eliminated fare collection. that means you can now ride its fixed route busses and paratransit services for free. it's part of a year long pilot program aimed at increasing ridership, helping low income riders and meeting city climate goals. the triple digit temperatures are back, and if you're taking medications, you could be at risk ahead at 6:00. the common prescriptions, which could leave you more prone to heat illness and a reminder nbc bay area streams 24/7. you can watch us whenever you'd like on roku or other streaming platforms. a lot more news ahead on this wednesday morning. it's 556. already
