alameda home. we're going to take you live to the scene with new details from police on what played out overnight and a crucial deadline in that fbi investigation tied to the oakland mayor. the documents, which need to be turned in today as mayor sheng thao fights allegations of wrongdoing. well, today is set the hottest day this week. meteorologist kari hall is tracking those dangerou, dangerous triple digit temperatures this is today in the bay. so hot it makes you say. i know that. good morning to you. on this thursday, i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. we'll get to the scorching temperatures in just a moment. but first we need to start with breaking news in the east bay. three family members dead after shooting at a home in alameda today in the bay's bob redell. joining us live there

from the scene. and bob, do police have a person in custody this morning? they do good morning to marcus and laura. alameda police say they do have a person of interest in custody, and that there's no indication there's a threat to the public anymore. shooting took place behind me at this home. that's the home with the green and the white in front. you can see there's an officer standing there. this is on the 400 block of kitty hawk road. it's in a neighborhood on the western edge of the island of alameda. if you're not familiar with this area, a neighbor called 911 just before nine last night to report this shooting. alameda police say that multiple members of a family that live here were shot, including children. it's not clear if the children are among the three people who died. we do know other family members were taken to the hospital, their conditions unknown to us. we did ask police if they thought this might be a domestic act of violence. the public information officer responded, quote, we can't say at this time. reporting live here on alameda

bob redell today in the bay. all right, bob, thank you. and we will continue to follow this breaking news both on air and online. you can get updates by downloading our free nbc bay area app. well, turning back to our other top story, the bay area heat wave. and today, as we said, set to be the hottest day this week, you're looking across the bay area where we will likely see some of those triple digit temperatures in some cities. meteorologist kari hall, of course, been tracking that it is six in the morning and we're already warming up almost 70 degrees, according to the thermometer there on the screen. yeah, that's very warm for us because we're used to starting out our morning in the mid 50s and we can feel that difference even just a few degrees. it makes all the difference in resetting for the day. and as we take a live view in dublin, the sun is just about to shine over the tri valley and we are going to have this sizzling summer heat for today and tomorrow with the excessive heat warning continuing in the valleys where our temperatures are headed for the 90s and over 100 degrees

along the bay will be in the 70s and up to the low 90s. it is also a spare the air alert day. so you want to limit driving and stay indoors as much as possible. our temperatures today in the south bay, one of the cooler spots we should say 96. in milpitas and san jose, it will be as hot as 106 today in morgan hill. and a lot of those highs over 100 degrees widespread across the east bay, 95 in fremont. but near the coast. it will be in the 70s for the afternoon. back to you. thank you very much, kari. it is 602 right now and happening today. another hearing taking place in scott peterson's effort to gain a new trial. this is a live look outside the courthouse in redwood city. today's hearing is part of his legal team's request for new dna testing of duct tape found on laci peterson's body. the judge will decide where the testing should happen and who should pay for it. this is the only piece of evidence being retested after the judge heard arguments

surrounding more than a dozen items. peterson is serving a life sentence for the murder of his wife and unborn son more than 20 years ago. ginger conejero saab will have a full report coming up in our next half hour, including more from a legal analyst on what comes next. well, governor gavin newsom scheduled to visit the east bay later this morning and at this point those details are limited. but we do know that he'll appear in alameda county to address public safety along with chp leaders. remember, chp now assisting local east bay law enforcement teams. that news conference is going to get underway at 11:00. and today it's the deadline for workers over at oakland city hall to hand over the documents requested by federal prosecutors. this is in the apparent grand jury investigation tied to mayor sheng thao. it demands, in part, the city hand over all records tied to california waste solutions. this is a group called evolutionary homes and documents tied to the mayor's partner, andre jones. the mayor

continues to deny allegations against her, and so far no charges have been filed. also today, the group is seeking to recall the mayor. will they plan to update their campaign efforts? oakland voters will determine her fate this november. it is 604. turning now to decision 2024 and president biden, facing a key test today, his seeking to make his case to the country during his first solo news conference since the debate. the president is scheduled to take questions from the white house press corps. all of this as he fights off calls for him to drop out of the race for the white house following that shaky debate performance last month. so far, less than a dozen democrats on capitol hill are publicly calling on the president to step aside. they are citing fears he won't beat former president trump, but the majority are backing him. i will tell you when i'm telling my constituents at home, it was a very rough debate night. if you

elect donald trump, it'll be four years of horrifically rough nights. former president trump has said he believes biden will stay in the race this afternoon. senate democrats will hear from senior biden advisers and the biden campaign during a special caucus lunch monday night. lester holt sits down with president biden in an exclusive one on one interview. watch a preview on nbc nightly news at 4 p.m, then the full, unedited interview in a prime time special at 6 p.m. on nbc. bay area 605 for you this morning. and you know what? a lot of folks around the bay area are going to be looking for spots to cool down today, and this is the reason why. take a look at those temperatures there on the screen. a lot of triple digits out there. meteorologist kari hall of course been monitoring that carry a lot of folks are like, okay, i want to head to a pool today because that might be the best place as long as they wear their sunscreen. but it's also going to be hot for that.

so yeah, whatever you plan to do to today try to stay cool, whether it's heading to the library, going to the movies and just going to a friend's house that has ac, you'll want to do that today as our temperatures range from low 70s along the coast to 80. in san mateo, 91 in mountain view, los gatos today, 103 and 107 in livermore. but take a look at fairfield today. we're looking at a high of 109 degrees. that is a major heat risk. and we look at what we call our climate shift index from climate central. it's a group of scientists who came up with this climate attribution tool, which lets us know that if the weather we're experiencing has been influenced by climate change, and they're seeing that there will be a more frequency of extreme heat in the future, and then they rank it on a scal. so they're saying in spots like fairfield with climate change, this was most likely three times more likely because of the climate impact that we're seeing

here. and it will be more likely that we will see more of these heat waves in the future. a very strong signal here. three times more likely on that climate shift index. and we'll continue to, unfortunately, have more triple digit heat in our future due to climate change. so we'll continue to monitor that. thankfully, we do have a cooldown in sight. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. mike, you've been watching higher gas prices, but there are some spots where you can get a little bit of a deal. yeah, at least i can say that i'm going to at least have some lows. contrary to what you have there. but we do have different prices altogether. in san jose, it's been maintaining the same, i'm sorry, the same with 377. so we'll start with the best price for cupertino this time. 379 $0.02 higher. but outside the city of san jose, still in the south bay, great gas on north deanza boulevard. then we have the best price in alameda county next livermore's diamond gas and mart. and that's over on south front road. as we're looking at the 399 over in alameda county,

still under four bucks, also by a single cent at a single station in solano county, 399 at bond fair in vallejo. it's on sacramento street. and again, we're getting all these reports from all of you on gasbuddy.com on the roadways, we're looking at a smooth drive, pretty much are all around the bay. as you would expect. pretty standard pattern for the morning commute. uncharacteristically slow is northbound 680 as you traveling up through the area from sunol in toward pleasanton, there's road work going on. the crew is scheduled to be there, possibly till seven, and that's why we're seeing the slowing there. they have not yet cleared that northbound side with a lane and possibly two, along with the shoulder blocked through that area. expect a little more slowing if you're heading north in toward, for example, walnut creek out of sunol, but at the bay bridge we have the metering lights on, but no where is everyone? yeah, they're all watching that slowdown in sunol. i guess. or or today in the bay or today in the bay they're watching both of you and you and me and kari and everybody else. that's right. and we appreciate

the decline was slight, just 0.1% from a month prior, and year over year inflation rose 3, but analysts expected a slight increase. the latest news is boosting hopes the fed will cut interest rates, and it's also sending futures higher. costco raising its membership fee for the first time since 2017. the basic gold star membership will go up by $5 to $65, while the executive membership will rise by $10, making it $130 a year. the changes go into effect in september and will affect about 52 million members. costco has typically raised membership fees every five years or so. the apple vision pro headset has yet to sell 100,000 units per quarter since launching in february, market tracker idc estimates it won't top 500,000 this year. idc says the international launch for the vision pro may help offset the weak start in the us, but apple's biggest new product in

years won't pick up momentum until a more affordable model hits the market, possibly sometime next year. that version is expected to cost roughly half the original, which goes for $3,500. well, new this morning. the white house today will announce a $2 billion grant for automakers here in america to retrofit their car factories to build new electric vehicles. the money will come out of the inflation reduction act and will go to both american carmakers like gm and foreign carmakers like volvo. so long as those companies plants use union labor and are located in the united states, the money will help bring 11 plants up to date. the white house says it will save 15,000 jobs. tonight, spacex plans to launch 20 more satellites into space. a falcon nine rocket launch is scheduled to take place on the central coast. it was supposed to lift off yesterday. the company is so far not commenting on why it pulled back. the satellites include 13 with direct to sell capabilities. spacex says will stream that event on x. this is

degrees in san jose at the time of the start of the movie. bring your popcorn. just lay it out there, pop. yeah it is hot. we're like baking outside. just put it out there on the sidewalk. it'll cook. you know, and trying to keep the house cool as well. but this is where we have our nice, cool, refreshing start to the morning. that fog rolling over the marin headlands and across the bay. and that's the golden gate bridge, where you can only see the very tip top of it this morning. and if you're driving in it, you can barely see right now. visibility is very low in that spot, but we're seeing that keeping things cool in the city while the valleys are looking like this. this is a live view in dublin. this morning as the sun comes up. there's definitely a lot more of the smoke and issues with air quality as we're dealing with this stretch of the heat. that's putting a lot of high levels of ozone in the atmosphere, and then we do have a lot of fires burning across the region, which makes the air quality unhealthy for sensitive groups, especially in the east bay and santa clara valley. we

tend to see the all of the particulate matter and those pollutants settling into the valley. so that's going to be the case again today. and our temperatures are going to be very dangerous in parts of the bay and some of our valleys hitting the triple digits. we'll see a high of 103 today in los gatos and 106 in morgan hill. very light wind and up to 100 a day in martinez and oakland will be in the upper 80s and 107 in livermore. antioch today, 109 and redwood city reaching 91 degrees hot there as well, but a short drive over to the coast will bring those temperatures down to the low 70s. we'll see that in san francisco, too, with a wide range in. temperatures in the marina district will be in the upper 60s, but if you're in the mission district, it will be in the mid 80s today and 103 today in napa, 112 today in ukiah and bodega bay will be in the low 70s. as we get into the weekend, temperatures will gradually come down. the next

thing we'll be watching will be mid-level moisture. so this is going to make it feel much more muggy. even though it won't be as hot it may still feel hot with temperatures in the 90s, but then we'll see a lot more of this moisture coming in from the remnants of those tropical systems that kind of die out, but get pushed into the bay area due to the direction of the wind flow, and that may also be enough to give us more clouds, the higher humidity. and we'll be watching, especially areas just to our south for the potential of some thunderstorms. if we do get that. unfortunately, that could possibly trigger more wildfires due to lightning strikes. so that's something we'll be watching saturday and sunday in the near term. it's the excessive heat that we have a few more days of before the heat starts to come down. just a little bit. for early next week, san francisco will be in the low 80s today, but it will be mostly in the 60s and 70s into early next week. mike, you're checking on some other metering lights?

yeah, we have the bridge metering lights, the bay bridge, but we also have these metering lights, the on ramps, you know, cycling green and red. there is a backup as folks enter south 101 at university. the volume builds, but it keeps traffic moving very smoothly as you travel through this corridor. that's what we like to see and that's what we expect to see on the peninsula side. south bay. a little bill for 101 starting now, and a little build for the tri-valley as well. we're looking at highway four with no surprises, except for a late start for concord and early start though for pittsburgh we may have a crash on highway four, so we'll track that area, but it's in the area between the 680 and i-80, so we shouldn't have a major problem right now. 37 i-80 580 all showing your typical bill there. as we're looking at traffic flowing, we will look at the bay bridge toll plaza where we're only now in the last five minutes, consistently seeing cars waiting here at the toll plaza itself. so there's a more gentle build at the toll plaza and a lighter volume in some portions of the bay. look at vasco road yesterday at this time we had already over 30 minute drive

hearing and scorching he. this may be the hottest day in what's shaping up as another hot week. meteorologist kari hall has today's timeline for those triple digit temperatures. this is today in the bay pay as you get up early. it's cooler in the morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia and i'm marcus washington. we'll get to that breaking news in just a moment. but first, another brutal hot day on tap for most of the bay area. meteorologist kari hall, of course, has been working har, keeping busy with all these rising temperatures. kari. yes, and it's starting out clear for a lot of our inland areas, and it's going to heat up quickly as we go throughout the day and look a little hazy out there as we take a look at our current temperatures. we're at 63 now in concord and 67 in martinez. most of us in the 50s and 60s. as we start out our morning. and then a heat advisory will be in effect as we go throughout today. and it's going to be with us tomorrow as well. the areas in pink are a step up from a

heat advisory and an excessive heat warning, and that's where temperatures will be much more dangerous, reaching over 100 degrees for parts of the south county and then into the tri-valley. we'll see highs up to about 107 degrees 112 in ukiah today. so we'll talk about lower temperatures and our weekend forecast. that's coming up in a few minutes. all right. we'll check back with you. 631 breaking news. we're following this morning with a live look in alameda, where three people have been shot and killed inside a home on kittyhawk road near ritter park. police say the shooting happened a little before 10:00 last night, and at this time, we know more victims are hospitalized. we also know some of the victims are children. and police do have a person of interest in custody. they say there is no threat to the public. our bob redell is there. he'll have a live report in our next half hour. we are following the story on air and online. make sure to download our nbc bay area news app for the very latest information. any

time and up to the minute alerts sent straight to your phone. happening today scott peterson's legal team returning to the redwood city courtroom in their bid to win him a new trial. now today's hearing surrounds new dna testing on one piece of evidence today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us live outside the courthouse this morning. and, ginger, this is just one piece of the larger case. prosecutors. right now, they feel like they're winning. well, that's right, marcus and laura, the last hearing, the previous hearing of several about a month or so ago, was seen as kind of a blow to scott peterson's bid for a new trial. the judge back in may ruled that only one piece of evidence among about 14 pieces of evidence should undergo new dna testing. today's hearing is all about that one piece of evidence. it is a duct tape that was found on laci peterson's pants during her autopsy, and how that will be retested or tested. now, scott

peterson has attended his previous hearings virtually. he is expected to do so again today. his defense team from the los angeles innocence project argues that the duct tape in question contained human dna that could point to someone other than peterson, who was convicted two decades ago of killing his pregnant wife, laci, and their unborn son. prosecutors have pushed back, saying evidence was already tested years ago, but defense attorneys argued it offered inconclusive results. today's hearing will answer the big question who will test that piece of evidence and who will pay for it? defense attorney paula canny says today's hearing may be mundane, but it is crucial because where you test, she says, can be impactful. the defense is just, you know, taking baby steps to get to their ultimate destination, which is, you know, to establish that scott peterson was wrongfully convicted. so there's any number of ways that can do

it. dna is the most powerful. and it's the thing that we hear the most and it's the most scientific. but yes, each of these things could possibly lead to a new trial. so today's hearing will focus on the dna testing for that piece of duct tape. there will be another hearing. it's scheduled for next week. that has to do with discovery of evidence in redwood city, ginger conejero saab, today in the bay. all right, ginger, thank you. and for a closer look at this case, watch our online special. i sat down with two attorneys who've been tracking the case since 2002, along with our jodi hernandez, who interviewed scott peterson before authorities arrested him. watch our half hour special. it's right now on nbcbayarea.com. just search scott peterson or wherever you stream. a mystery unfolding in san francisco. this is after an australian businessman was found

unconscious and seriously injured. colin bartels is now at san francisco general hospital. his current condition is unknown. now he's the ceo of grain producers australia. the former deputy prime minister in the country, who bettles once worked under, tells sky news that he never showed up for a scheduled flight from san francisco to new york, u.s. authorities later tracked him down at the hospital bed. he was seriously injured. 4th of july and robbed of his phone and wallet. police also say that they have no information about the attack. if you know anything, you are asked to contact them. state regulators will meet in san francisco today to consider pg&e. s latest rate hike request. the utility is seeking another $150 million, which it says would cover the cost for repairs tied to more recent storm damage. if the puc approves it, it would likely add another $10 per month to the average bill. rates on average

this year are already higher by more than $35. opponents are planning to protest outside the auditorium where today's hearing is taking place. new at six another laser installation set to debut in san francisco, illuminate is premiering its grace window display. one image shows the beaming passing through that beam is going to pass through a window at grace cathedral, beaming from the fairmont hotel on nob hill. illuminate was also behind the bay bridge lights and last month's pride laser display. the display, the new one that is, can actually be seen from dusk until dawn starting tonight through sunday. as part of the group's summer of awe series. yeah, that looks pretty cool, right? all right, we'll meet our meteorologist, kari hall. i see my mouth is melting from the heat already. it'll literally be cool in san francisco, which is good. you can escape there. yeah, if you're in the valley and you're going to san francisco to see the lights, pack a coat. and that'll be.

that'll be hard to imagine if you're wearing shorts and a t shirt, but it will definitely be much cooler there. take a look at where we'll be this evening in san francisco in the upper 50s. that breezy wind, that fog rolling in and that high humidity is going to make it feel chilly out there. but there is no chill for san jose as we're going to have our movie night today starting at 6:00, 92 degrees. and as we go into the evening, it will be in the mid 80s by 8:00. and then at 1030, as it's wrapping up, it will be 79 degrees. so a little bit more comfortable. but if you're out in san francisco tomorrow, another day, we're trying to escape the heat. look up. you may see the italian blue angels flying over at crissy field starting at 130 in the afternoon. upper 60s at that time and throughout the day. so really nice weather there. and if it's been hot all week, you're dreaming about the beach and maybe you're planning to go to santa cruz this weekend. plan on it taking a long time to get

there. i think you won't be alone and we'll see. temperatures in the upper 60s for friday dropping down to the mid 50s at times. some low clouds and fog as we continue to see those highs. only in the mid 60s throughout the weekend. and it's going to be warm in tahoe this weekend. up to 86 degrees. perfect weather for maybe a little dip in the lake. there it will be in the low 80s for highs on saturday and sunday, and overnight temperatures in the low 50s. mike you've got one unexpected slowdown. yeah this is what we've been tracking for the last i guess 40 minutes now. northbound 680 from sunol up in toward bernal in pleasanton. there's a more slowing there. there was that last bit of roadwork to clear up from overnight. we had at least one lane, sometimes two lanes, and the shoulder blocked. it looks like there's a distraction going north now. somewhere short of where we saw the slow drive and the southbound side distracted as well. that your commute direction, i'm going to say they're starting to move the equipment out of the area. they're supposed to be clear in

price essentially refused the state's offer to provide state attorneys for oakland prosecutions. now, the city cites its letter, authored by newsom's cabinet secretary, saying that price's office has not made use of the offered resources. the da's office is not commenting. price will face a recall vote this november. an east bay gas station becomes a target for thieves stealing thousands of gallons of diesel fuel. the store manager says it's just one example of the crime they're dealing with on a regular basis. shaheen oholone manages the valero gas station along murray avenue in fremont. he shared surveillance images of a recent incident in may involving suspects using a flatbed truck with a 55 gallon container to steal thousands of gallons of diesel fuel worth tens of thousands of dollars. he says the individuals used a universal key to open up the gas pumps to give them unlimited gas. it's the third time this

has happened at that location since 2014. as business owners were already struggling. we're fighting tooth and nail to try and stay competitive to everyone else. this video from june shows suspects trying to break into the store after hours. fremont pd say the same group stole atms from nearby liquor stores on the same night. in this video, he says a man tried to leave the gas station after a customer pumping gas said the man was sexually harassing her. the man went back to his car, turned around and pointed a gun at him. police did arrest that man. new this morning, in honor of levi stadium's 10th anniversary, the team launching forty-niners cares about santa clara. now, this is an initiative to give philanthropic support to the city. it's pledging $250,000 per year for the stadium's lifetime to causes throughout santa clara. the 40 niners support santa clara middle and high school students and stem opportunities. this year. it's giving $100,000 to santa clara

swim club and $50,000 to bill wilson center. this is a nonprofit supporting local youth and families. the 49ers spokesperson said that community support really is an important part of the 49ers legacy. the spirit of giving is something that is top down. it comes from our ownership group. you know, we have the largest foundation in the nfl and that's because it has been a priority for them every single day to challenge us to think about new and better ways to give back to this community. community groups will soon be able to apply online for support from the 40 niners on their website. that is, 40 niners.com/40 niners cares. well, as temperatures increase across the bay area, many people are looking for ways to cool off. here's a live look for you this morning over at the robert livermore community center pool. this is where it is sure to be a busy day, with a lot of families out there coming to swim.

somebody's already in the water there. if you are outside today with your kids, maybe you'll head to a playground before the temperatures get too hot. but there are some things you need to know before you head out. today in the bay, cinthia pimentel joins us now, and cynthia, the heat certainly can be dangerous for kids. absolutely laura and marcus. doctors warn the equipment heats up faster than the temperature and it could burn your children. doctor tina palmieri is the chief of the burn unit at shriners children's hospital of northern california in sacramento. and she says kids could get injuries from redness to blisters to third degree burns. just from playing on the slides, swings and the jungle gyms, the consumer product safety commission reported. it doesn't have to be 100 degrees for playground equipment to get hot. after using a heat gun to test the playground equipment, a plastic slide registered a temperature of 161 degrees. a swing came in at 143 degrees. now, doctor palmieri says if adults can't touch the slide for five seconds, it's way too dangerous for children. children

are sweating because it's hot and so they'll stick. and then that prolonged contact is what really causes the problem. she also said she has treated several children for blisters and burns on their feet. after running barefoot on the hot asphalt. now, the hospital expects to see more patients due to the prolonged heat wave. so let's turn things over to meteorologist kari hall for a look at just how hot it will get, not only in the bay area, but really across the state. cynthia. that's terrifying. 161 degrees. i need to bring a, like a pan of cookies to the playground. and if it starts baking on the slide, it's like kids. it's too hot. and here's your treat. yeah i bet. oh my gosh. okay, good luck with that. yeah. it's going to be so hot today i think we're going to be staying inside. let's talk about what's ahead. we are going to start out with temperatures that are nice and comfortable. and then as we go throughout the day, it's going to heat up quickly and we're under an excessive heat warning for the inland valleys today and tomorrow as the summer sizzle

continues. now the valleys will see temperatures in the 90s and over 100 degrees. it's also a spare the air alert day, so limit your driving to try to keep the pollutants that we're putting out there at a minimum, as we are already going to see a high level of ozone. so look at our air quality outlook for today. the worst of that will be in the east bay and santa clara valleys, those low lying areas where the air doesn't mix out as much. we'll have the worst of that. so we're wanting to stay indoors to get some fresher breezes. here's a look at our highs today. we're up to 108 in vacaville, 109 in fairfield, dublin livermore well over 100 degrees there los gatos, 103. downtown san jose will be in the mid 90s. and then for the peninsula, it's warm, but it's not dangerous. and we're going to see san mateo high up to 80 degrees. and then for the north bay, widespread triple digit temperatures, santa rosa, novato 100 degrees. tomorrow, the heat is easing a little. it's still

going to be dangerous during the middle of the day, especially for prolonged exposure. and we're going to see a major to extreme heat risk for those areas away from the coastline. but then for the weekend, temperatures will start to come down and i wanted to show you this map. this is a look at mid-level moisture. and you see the green there that indicates a high amount of moisture in the atmosphere. and just to our south, there may be enough of that to trigger some thunderstorms, possibly some lightning. and then for the bay area, it's going to feel muggy. so even though temperatures won't be as hot, it's not going to feel much better until we can shake that humidity, which looks to happen early next week as our highs go down to the low 90s. so a look at our 7-day forecast shows the peak of the heat today. really hot tomorrow and then humid on saturday. possibly more clouds moving by as well. and for san francisco will be in the low 80s in parts of the city today. a nice and mild tomorrow with upper 70s, but then upper 60s and low 70s from the weekend stretching into next week. mike,

you were saying that the lanes are finally full at the bay bridge. took about 45 minutes from the time those metering lights were turned on, and we saw the visible backup just slowly start to build. but now all lanes are filled in and the 880 overcrossing showing a backup as well. nothing surprising. a crash on highway four. it sounds like it's not really a problem for the commuters nearby, and no major injuries. and other crash just off the east shore freeway. as you travel through richmond. so this pattern really good right now. notice walnut creek interchange now seeing a build south 680 coming into the area. so there may be some slowing as you approach 24. and the split there looking at northbound 680 we still have a slower drive. that crew still registered on the grid north 680 out of sunol. they're slowing up to just about the edge of pleasanton, the southbound side. it shows a little build for the commute itself, but the construction or the repair crews, i think are still going on with possibly two lanes blocked right around that 680, 84 interchange in the northbound side, again, should be cleared in the next few minutes. the rest of the bay is a pretty traditional pattern. so

police do have a person of interest in custody. they say there is no threat to the public. happening today, another hearing takes place in scott peterson's effort to gain a new trial. the proceedings is in redwood city and are part of his legal team's request for new dna testing of duct tape found on laci peterson's body. the judge will decide where that testing should happen and who should pay for it. this is the only piece of evidence being retested. this is after the judge heard arguments surrounding more than a dozen items. peterson is serving a life sentence for the murder of his wife and unborn son. more than 20 years ago, governor gavin newsom is scheduled to visit the east bay later this morning. at this point, details are limited, but we do know he'll appear in alameda county to address public safety, along with chp leaders. you'll recall the chp is now assisting local east bay law enforcement teams. the news conference gets underway at 11 a.m. today is the deadline for workers at oakland city hall to hand over documents requested by

federal prosecutors in the apparent grand jury investigation, tied to oakland mayor sheng thao. it demands, in part, the city hand over all records tied to california waste solutions, a group called evolutionary homes and documents tied to the mayor's partner, andre jones. the mayor continues to deny allegations against her and so far, no charges have been filed. also today, the group seeking to recall the mayor plan to update their campaign efforts. oakland voters will determine her fate this november. state regulators will meet in san francisco today to consider pg&e. s latest rate hike request. the utility is seeking another $150 million, which it says would cover the costs for repairs tied to more recent storm damage. if the cpuc approves, it would likely add another $10 per month to the average bill. rate hikes on average this year are already higher by more than $35. opponents are planning to protest outside of the

auditorium. this is where today's hearing will take place. and another look beautiful in san francisco. cooler there, but across the bay area in some places, not so much. not so much. it's going to heat up fast this morning, so you'll want to get out that morning. run or outdoor activities before those temperatures hit the 90s and triple digits. it will be dangerous to be outside for a long amount of time. today we're up to 112 in ukiah. that will be the hottest temperature. but then going into the day tomorrow, still hot, but the heat won't be as intense. the weekend is looking much nicer, but it may be humid as our high temperatures will most likely be in the 80s and low 90s. as you're getting out and about for your weekend. all right, well, we'll take you out to the roadways. where? look at this northbound 680, just in the last three minutes, we see some recovery. it's still listed on the grid, the overnight crews on the northbound side, but it looks like from those speed sensors, they did indeed clear from that area. we're back to a relatively light commute for the morning. north 101 show slowing.
