we're four days away from the republican national convention. a convention may seem like a formality since the nominee is typically decided beforehand, it but wasn't always that way. >> even though president biden said he plans to stay in the race, but if he does drop out, the dnc would become a pivotal moment. here's political conventions simply explained. ♪♪ >> reporter: political conventions are known for punching tag lines. >> read my lips. >> reporter: up and coming stars. >> the united states of america. >> reporter: and primetime treatment. put simply, conventions gather party representatives from each state to vote for their presidential nominee. how did conventions come to be a part of the american political system? >> originally, in the very early part of the america republic, we started to have political parties.
12:48 pm
but we didn't have conventions. >> reporter: quick history lesson. up until the early 1800s members of congress not the american people would decide on who to nominate for president. >> focused on the political elite. >> exactly. >> reporter: in 1831, the nation's first third party organized the first political convention to combat this, the other major parties quickly followed suit and by the early 1900s, party primaries began to emerge where voters in a pledged political party picked their preferred candidate. the results determine how delegates a potential candidate gets. >> it basically becomes a binding commitment that the delegates are forced into support a candidate. >> reporter: but primaries didn't become standard until after the volatile 1968 democratic national convention. >> vice president humphrey won the nomination. >> reporter: after president lyndon johnson said he would not seek re-election.

vice president humphrey won the nomination without running in the primaries, setting off a firestorm. >> there were major protests in chicago, and in the years that followed, democrats look at the '68 convention and say that wasn't great. that puts us in the process where we are today. the only way you can become a nominee is to run in primaries and win them. >> reporter: typically, parties know their nominee before the convention, so why do we have them at all? >> now they're sort of video brochures, right, meet the presidential candidate, meet the running mate. >> reporter: conventions put on promising leaders in the party. >> i'd argue that's actually the most influential role now of the convention. conventions have basically transitioned with media, before we had radio and tv they were insider affairs that were covered by the press. >> starting in the 1950s

television started covering things. >> reporter: candidates focused on winning american public opinion and parties using conventions to establish their next term platform. where do you see conventions going? >> targeted the internet. >> the goal of a convention -- is to build up the party. these days the best way to do it, you got to find a way to get them. >> and that's political conventions simply explained. the republican convention is next week and nbc news will have complete coverage. join our team at 8:30 on your local nbc news station. and on nbc news now. we want to hear from you, what do you want simply explained. please let me know. connect with me on your favorite social media platform. kate. kate. protect against rsv with arexvy. arexvy is a vaccine used to prevent lower respiratory disease from rsv in people 60 years and older. arexvy does not protect everyone and is not for those with severe allergic reactions to its ingredients.
