8 p.m. and in pink. this is the continued excessive heat warning that we will see for one more day. we're starting out with some upper 50s in san francisco. it's 63, in palo alto, a little warm in san jose, 68 degrees and 71 in livermore. as we go into the day, here's a look at our high temperatures. and it's going to be a still a major heat risk day in a few spots. it will be extreme as we are in this three day stretch of some really hot temperatures. but in livermore, we're going to be up to 102. yesterday we hit the triple digits and we're well above 102. so it's going to be a little bit lower and up to 99 in napa today. san francisco still keeping it cool with some mid 70s. so we'll talk about our weekend forecast and also increased humidity in our forecast in just a few minutes. mike, you were seeing a slowdown in palo alto. yeah. in fact there was a traffic break as they moved a vehicle to the shoulder. north 101 approaching

university. now just starting to see traffic restored. so there will be slowing out of mountain view. heading up past university area with our speed sensors showing a little bit of a lag. but this stretch should greatly improve after they cleared the vehicle from the center divide to the shoulder in the northbound direction of 101 heading up into san francisco. everything else is moving relatively lightly. smaller incidents going on there. we do have an issue with a spill going on eastbound 80 around highway four, but a connector should be reopened. back to you, mike, thanks very much. at 502, breaking news this morning, word of a massive at&t data breach potentially impacting millions of customers. here's what the company says. call and texting records were exposed over a six month period in 2022. it all sprouted from an illegal download made to a third party cloud platform, at&t first learned of the breach in april. the company says it does not believe the data is publicly available, though. here's the thing it says the phone numbers of nearly all cell customers, landline customers and customers

whose providers use the at&t network. well, those phone numbers have been impacted. the breach covered the period between may and october of 2022. the company says it's notifying all customers whose information was exposed an alameda community is shaken and saddened following a family horror, police say a family a father shot and killed his family at their home today in the bay's bob redell. joining us live outside of police headquarters this morning. and bob, what is the next step for the stepfather with for the father that suspect. good morning to you, marcus. and chris. the suspect's name is shane killian. he is the man who alameda police say shot and killed four members of his family, including his six year old son. he is expected to make his first court appearance before a judge that could happen as soon as later this morning, possibly later today. we just don't know yet. this is the scene outside his home on kitty hawk road. this is near the

western alameda shoreline, where people have been leaving flowers and candles to remember the people who were killed inside that house. police say that on wednesday night around 9:00, killian, who is 54 years old, shot and killed his wife, his in-laws and six year old son, killian is also accused of shooting his one year old son, who is in critical condition in the hospital. mark seyarto. he dropped off flowers last night in honor of the six year old boy who attended school where seyarto was assistant principal. absolutely shocking, i don't know. there aren't really any words to capture the level of shock that we're experiencing. it was an important part of what made our school special and what makes our community special. and we'll miss him every day. his kids are never going to get another game ball, and he he needed that. but it, i don't know. that was a neighbor who

goes by coach ray, who coaches little league in the area, who has kids around the same age as the young boys shot wednesday. alameda police don't know yet, or at least aren't saying why killian killed his family. allegedly. but the chief did say that this was the actions of, quote, a coward. reporting live here outside alameda police headquarters. bob redell today in the bay. bob, thanks, marcus. well, decision 2020 for president biden is defending his reelection bid. in a solo news conference. he said he is the best candidate to beat former president donald trump in november. here's today in the bay's brie jackson with the latest from washington. reporter despite the uncertainty here on capitol hill, the biden campaign is arguing that the president succeeded in fending off some of his doubters and urged the democratic party to stop talking about themselves and focus on the guy they're running against. more children a defiant president biden defending his

reelection bid. i think i'm the most qualified person to run for president. the president's first solo press conference of the year, getting off to a rocky start as he flubbed the name of his own vice president. i wouldn't have picked vice president trump to be vice president, but i think she was not qualified to be president. that gaffe comes as the 81 year old is working to fend off critics, even within his own party, who say he must drop out of the presidential race, citing concerns about his poor debate performance, age and ability to win. this november. can you name me somebody who's got more major piece of legislation passed in three and a half years? i created 2000 jobs this last week. still, more than a dozen democratic lawmakers want him to step aside. the hard reality is, and i'm far from the only democrat who believes this, that the numbers, the trajectory, what americans feel in their bones right now suggests not

right here on nbc. bay area. 508 for you right now in vacaville, police are grieving this morning. this is after police officer was killed during a traffic stop. you're looking at video of a procession for 32 year old matthew bowen. he leaves behind a wife and two sons. police officer bowen was making a traffic stop. this was yesterday morning when he was hit from behind by another car. bowen was taken to the hospital later dying. the driver of the other vehicle, 24 year old serena rodriguez, is accused of driving under the influence of drugs. governor gavin newsom is ordering flags at the capitol, flown at half staff in memory of officer bowen. now to the east bay, new friction for alameda county district attorney pamela price. this time it's with governor newsom. he's announcing that state prosecutors will now handle alameda county's more complex criminal cases because price declined his offer to provide the county extra prosecutors and resources. the

governor talked about the move yesterday when he also announced more chp patrols for oakland, including at least 20 officers every day. price later issued a response. she chose not to embrace that path. and we have a mechanism with the with the ag's office, the department of justice, to do just that. look she was independently elected. i'm not here to offer advice or counsel. i can only observe what i've observed. i can't speak to the governor's disappointment. i'm sorry that he's disappointed, and i hope he will call me. price is describing the governor as misinformed. she says her office did take steps to obtain the resources the governor offered, but it ended up being far less than what newsom had initially indicated. now a live look at san francisco bay. well, actually, that's inside somewhere near the bay. not actually looking at the bay yet, but the bay this weekend is going to double as a racing circuit. that's because tomorrow and sunday, sailgp will hold its

livermore. the warmest temperature, los gatos, now at 76 degrees. while in morgan hill it's 62. and that's where we'll see our temperatures going into the upper 60s. at 8:00. at 10:00, it's 81 degrees and 92 degrees at noon. and even though we are seeing some hot weather for this afternoon won't be as hot as yesterday, we'll reach a high temperature here of 101. and in the low, upper 90s and low one hundreds, i should say 102. in concord, a lot of triple digits as well, extending into the north bay. but we are seeing the heat easing up just a little bit now, looking at tomorrow's high temperature, this is going to be pretty nice. and only slightly above normal, a high of 91. in dublin in oakland 77 degrees and will be in the mid 80s in santa rosa. and it continues to get even better on sunday. no major heat risk across the bay area but one

garcia and i'm marcus washington. a lot to get to this morning. but first setting sail i want to give you a live look this morning over in san francisco. this is where sailgp competition will soon get underway. our cinthia pimentel. she's going to be joining us live in about 15 minutes with live interviews and a look at those conditions sailors will be facing. first, let's start with a look at the forecast. how hot is it going to be, kari. still very hot. and i don't know if you'll be able to tell the difference between 105 and 103, but it will be a little bit cooler today in some spots. this is where we've had the relief all throughout the heat wave this week. and you can see the fog rolling across the bay and the very tips of the top of the golden gate bridge there. it's going to be nice and cool in the city. and also that marine layer stretches over toward oakland, where we are going to see temperatures going from mid 60s at 8:00 to 76 at noon and staying in the 70s for the most part for today. but away from

the bay and the coastline, it's going to be hot once again. an excessive heat warning continues until 8:00 and our temperatures back to the upper 90s in dublin today, 102 in concord, 106 in vacaville. and look at ukiah today, 112 degrees. the good news is that we are going to see these numbers coming down for the weekend. we'll take a look at that and some events to help you enjoy the cool down. coming up in a few minutes. all right. kari, thank you. and that heat is turning deadly. santa clara health officials say now at least 19 people have died since the scorching temperatures topped triple digits today in the bay's thom jensen joins us from the newsroom. tom, how are people trying to stay cool? good morning to both of you. yeah, a lot of people are heading to other cities that are a little bit cooler around the bay, but this heat is very dangerous. according to mercury news reporting, overnight, another person died from heat related issues. we've reached out to the santa clara county coroner's office for confirmation. all week long, we've been talking to people who are outdoors to see

how they are surviving in this heat. he's doing a good job. i mean, we're getting ready to wrap up. we started at 830, getting out of here before it starts really blazing. an ice cream vendor also said that heat drives his business way up, so doesn't bother him. and he likes the idea of keeping people cool and hydrated during the scorching heat waves that road crew that we talked to, besides knocking off early, they said before it gets really hot, they also make sure they drink plenty of water and take breaks in the shade or in their air conditioned cars. they're really looking forward to the end of this heat, though, and glad they'll hear that it's at least starting to cool off in the coming days ahead. so if you're looking for a place to cool off, boy, you got to find some of those cooling centers, i guess. chris. marcus. all right, tom, thanks very much. if you want to keep up to date with the weather in real time, our nbc bay area app is a great way to monitor the hot weather or in the winter time, the cold weather. and wet weather all in real time. get up to the minute updates sent straight to your phone. same for

skyway and then get about your way and loop back the rest of the bay, showing a nice smooth drive right now it's friday, so we expect a later build, but there will still be a build back to you. thanks, mike. the time is 534. happening today. the alameda man accused of shooting and killing four members of his own family is scheduled to be arraigned. the tragedy unfolded late wednesday. a growing memorial now sits in front of the home. police say 54 year-old shane killian shot and killed his wife, their young son and his in-laws. he's also accused of shooting and critically injuring their one year old son. our bob redell is following developments. he'll have a live report at the top of the hour. also in the east bay, a 34 year old man is dead. this is following a shooting overnight happened at an apartment complex around 730 last night along wilbur avenue. so far, there's no word of any arrest or what led up to that shooting. police are currently only calling it an active investigation. anyone with information is asked to call police. turning back to decision 2024, president biden is setting his sights on the state of michigan today, despite calls by some democratic

lawmakers to end his reelection bid during a lengthy solo news conference, biden took questions yesterday. he called his debate performance, by the way, a stupid mistake. that's a quote the president also tried to highlight his record on foreign policy, taxes and fighting gun violence. more children are killed by a bullet than any other cause of death. the united states of america. what the hell are we doing? reporters also asked the president about his health and stamina. a noticeable mistake from biden when he was referring to kamala harris as vice president trump. you remember earlier this week, speaker emerita nancy pelosi spoke out on morning joe. but her support in the president's decision to continue his reelection bid. but she stopped short of saying he should stay in the race this morning on the today show, democratic congressman jim clyburn says the conversation over biden getting out of the race should stop the

conversation should focus on the record of this administration, on the alternative to his election, and let joe biden continue to make his own decisions about his future. he's earned that right, and i am going to give him that much respect. you can watch that full interview ahead at 7 a.m. on today, right after today in the bay. well, former president donald trump is asking for his guilty verdict in the hush money trial to be thrown out. the former president's request comes after the supreme court's recent immunity decision, which outlines when a former president must be shielded from prosecution while the effort to toss out the jury's verdict likely faces an uphill battle, that last ditch bid already succeeded in getting trump's sentencing date postponed. prosecutors are expected to respond, and the latest filing by july 24th. all right, we can give you a live look at san francisco, where later today, governor newsom will meet with

new zealand's new prime minister to talk about hitting climate targets and continuing economic ties with new zealand in 2022. the governor established a new partnership with new zealand's previous prime minister there. well, their memorandum of cooperation focused on reducing pollution and speeding up the transition to clean energy. well, the new prime minister of new zealand, christopher luxon, took over last november. let's take a live look out in dublin this morning. one of the places seeing some warmer conditions this week. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring what we can expect as we head into the weekend, as well as what's going on this friday. yes, so there's a lot going on, and in a cool place where you may if you have the if you have the opportunity, want to go and try to escape the valley heat today in san francisco or any time between 130 and 3:00, you may see the italian blue angels flying over crissy field. it's going to be in the upper 60s and throughout the day. lots of sunshine and a breezy wind. there's so much going on in the city today.

there's bastille day, then we have a giants game tonight. you'll be able to see the light installation in the city later on this evening, but we have some beautiful weather there with temperatures in the mid 60s. it will be cooling off quickly. bring the jacket and it's also going to be pretty gusty as that fog rolls in. it's going to be very warm. this weekend, but still nice for the san jose obon festival in japantown will be in the upper 80s tomorrow for that high temperature. so you want to make sure you're staying hydrated and bring the sunscreen. temperatures will be dropping down to the low 60s and then again on sunday we'll be back into the mid 80s. if you're going along the coastline and want to catch some of those views on highway one, driving down the big sur, it's going to be 82 degrees there today. so even warm in big sur. but then cooling down this weekend with some mid 70s for highs. and at times especially early in the morning, that fog will be rolling in. if you're going to tahoe this weekend, expect highs in the mid 80s for today. it will be warm, but then coming

down to the low 50s at night and then saturday and sunday, we'll see those high temperatures in the low 80s and overnight lows in the 50s, watching out for a slight chance of thunderstorms near the lake. so just a lot going on. whether you're staying here or hitting the road, we'll be watching all of that for you. and i'll talk about the weekend forecast for the bay area coming up. mike, you've been watching the roads. it seems friday light. yeah, it is pretty light. and the roadways, but right now i'll warn you about what's ahead of you if you are exiting and heading over toward rodeo and hercules. i know that's a limited number of people who are watching right now. at 540, this morning. you might want to take that willow exit, though, and you will not be able to take that until further notice. there's an investigation that's going on. originally started with some trees on fire alongside the roadway, but now they're doing a further investigation of something that they've discovered at the scene. so we're looking at willow avenue off ramp closed from eastbound 80. that's heading up to the carquinez bridge, heading out toward the area. we would talk about people leaving town for tahoe that kerry was talking about. you can exit highway four and get to surface streets. and

for now, that's the best you can do because you've been warned by me that you can't pass that highway four exit opportunity. otherwise you have to go up to cummings skyway. there's a mild build, and we expect more folks to take their way out of the area through perhaps, perhaps tahoe to get some refreshing breezes up there. but right now it's an easy light drive, including the bay bridge toll plaza. no major backup in fact, no metering lights. we will look ahead getting into the city. there's another series we've been talking about that this series will. the last one just ended. this one now is on nbc bay area as well. so we're going to watch for the giants there on tv or maybe getting to the ballpark and crossing over with folks, getting out of town for the evening for friday. of course, they want to get out of town. you want to get in for the game. just note that off of the 280 extension and off the bay bridge and in oakland, there is also a concert. it's the least anticipated album tour. that's what it's called. i didn't even bother to play. i'm not sure. marcus. you're not going to this one, are you? i am not going to. that did not anticipate this one. the title just made me go. maybe not this one. all right, back to you guys. thanks, mike. well, this is a little more

alert due to the excessive heat warning inland and santa clara. not bad. we're in the upper 60s right now and it will be mostly sunny throughout the day. we're at 11:00 and 83 degrees and 87 at noon. it will still be a hot afternoon, but not as hot as yesterday. we'll talk about the trend for the weekend coming up. actually, it looks a lot cooler in this shot. i know some of that's lighting. there are some low clouds here in palo alto. shots northbound 101 approaching university avenue. a smooth drive on the peninsula 101 does show more slowing. oh, i see more traffic in san jose. we'll show you what's going on there. coming up. well, the president of cal poly humboldt is stepping down in the wake of his controversial response to protests there. the school says tom jackson, junior, will take on a new role next month ahead

of the school's new year. now, the credited he's credited with helping guide the university as it transitioned into the state's third polytechnic school. he also took a lot of heat back in the spring for the way he responded to protests by palestinian supporters, some of whom occupied campus buildings and were arrested after critics say that he requested police to respond. eventually, the faculty held a vote of no confidence in the school leadership. jackson will continue there in another capacity. well, turning to a live look over at alcatraz, a foggy start to the morning. but this is just locked in with a contract for a major makeover. the national park service is actually bringing in a familiar contractor, and this is a tutor, panini, which is wrapping up the new muni central subway. alcatraz renovations will cost nearly $50 million. it includes refurbishing the main prison building and improving infrastructure, also removing hazardous materials and repairing worn down concrete.

two weeks from today, the world will celebrate the thrill of victory. that's when the opening ceremonies will take place in paris for the summer olympic games. and at this point, the athletes are locked in literally and figuratively. the teams are now set following some exciting trials, and team usa athletes are now in preparation mode, fine tuning their training for first time olympians. it'll be 0 to 60 in no time. for those lucky enough to make it back, like former cal swimmer ryan murphy and stanford's katie ledecky. there's a lot to savor. i feel really fortunate that we had an incredible atmosphere at trials that we can learn from and really just kind of take those experiences and hopefully be better in paris, just trying to learn from the trials, meet, get better, and i love when we come together as a team and get to train together and get the best out of each other. other headliner teams are also getting ready. the latest u.s. dream

talent this morning, is to drive the simulator that fans and everybody that's coming to the event can kind of get a taste of. so tell me what this is for people that get to try it out. you were telling me also that the sailors practice on it when they don't get a chance to go out on the water. what are we looking at here as we kind of cruise towards the golden gate bridge right now? yeah. so the simulator really is for training the sailors, the athletes, but it also allows fans to come and have a look and actually kind of look inside the cockpit and see what it's like, and, and experience some of it for themselves. absolutely. it's kind of it's kind of hard, but i've gotten a little bit better at it this morning trying not to not to sink all of us down here and, tell me how many teams we have competing this weekend and what what to look out for, you know, saturday and sunday. yeah. so we've got ten teams. we've got practice today and then we've got the real racing on the weekend and the grand final. the last final of the season is on the sunday. and really it's between yeah 3 or 4 teams. so

right here under the golden gate bridge. so just imagine the speed and all of the dynamics going into driving these incredible boats out here this weekend. and marcus looked it up gp means yeah grand prix grand prix. hey and look cynthia i want you to practice really hard because team today in the bay needs to win the $2 million. that's all i'm saying. well, i might have a side wager as well on it. no pressure, no pressure. all right. okay, i got to get to work. it's all on you. all right. conditions there, weather wise for them. it's going to be pretty good. yeah. looks great. and they talked about, you know, the dynamics of seeing the fog and the breeze and all of that stuff. and of course the water is very cold. so they don't want to go into that. but we are we do have microclimates here in the bay area. so while it's cool and foggy near the coast and that's what we're seeing right now in the san francisco camera, it is warm and clear in dublin. we're at 71. that's our start to the day. and we're used to starting temperatures like this

in the mid 50s in san rafael. it's even warm in san jose for the start of our day in the upper 60s. right now. and take a look at san ramon. what to expect. so we're starting out right now. temperatures in the upper 60s, and it will be warming up quickly once we get through sunrise and into late morning. will be at 82 at 10:00 at noon, we're at 91 degrees and temperatures continue to rise from there. it won't be as hot as yesterday, but still, 97 is still pretty hot and we'll be in the 90s for several hours starting to come down around 7:00 and at 8:00 it's comfortable enough to walk the dog after dinner. we're going to see temperatures around the bay area in the mid to upper 90s for the south bay, as hot as 101 in morgan hill, and much of the east bay will be in the triple digits, with antioch reaching a high of 104. in oakland, it's going to be 81 degrees, while in fremont 94. so you can see the range and temperatures there 60s near the coast, upper 80s for

palo alto, san francisco, anywhere from mid 60s to the upper seconds. it's going to be warmer in the mission district in downtown. and for the north bay. we're in the 70s for bodega bay. but as you head over toward ukiah, it will be 112 degrees and still pretty hot in napa for this afternoon. tomorrow we'll get a surge in humidity and we'll start to see more clouds coming in, and it's going to feel humid as we go through the day. it's going to be partly cloudy and feeling pretty muggy even as the temperatures come down. a few degrees, it may still feel very hot to you in spots like gilroy, where we'll see that drop in temperatures into the low 80s and looking ahead, going out ten days, no more 90s or triple digits. so we're really excited to go through the next several days after today, it looks so much better now with that humidity. we will have to watch out for some isolated thunderstorms that may pop up, especially over the sierra and areas off to our

south. next week is looking great. san francisco stays in the 60s and our valleys will be in the 80s and low 90s. now. mike, you said you saw a little build in the south bay. yeah. i'm sorry, i was get focused on the traffic. i'm so happy those seven day you showed there. we're looking over here. oh, there's a little bit of slowing right now. and in front of our camera, slow moving pair trying to head safely north on 101. there we go. little shuttle getting up past alum rock eventually in the next few minutes. and we're looking at a smooth drive. only been a few minutes where we've seen that traditional slowdown. and it looks like it's lining up already. friday. the first burst will last a little less time than it will kick in a little bit later for the rest of the commute. a smooth drive for the tri-valley and peninsula. we're looking over to the altamont pass there is a disabled vehicle reported around stone cut overcrossing. it is preventing a distraction as there's a build out of tracee, but nothing major. a smooth drive once you get in toward livermore. vasco road under 20 minutes from marsh creek. still about 18 or 19 minutes with a little bit of

slowing just starting to show up. we do have a couple of smaller incidents along i-80, but this one, the willow exit off of eastbound 80, getting up to the carquinez bridge. the willow exit will remain closed until the investigation is complete. at the exit there, use highway four and get on to city streets. we're looking at highway 37 with a little bit of a bill, but nothing major holding steady there. the bay bridge, despite having about 15 minutes of time with the metering lights on, we haven't seen any backup. so things are very light here, guys. a smooth drive into san francisco and traditional for a friday. later on in the commute the morning and indefinitely into the afternoon. that's when things get actually really crowded. getting into the city as folks head over there and try about the activities, just like the giants game tonight at 7 p.m. 715, we're looking at the san mateo bridge because highway 92 moving very smoothly right now, but continuing over to half moon bay. remember, there's that road work going on, so there may be restrictions for traffic as you head to the beach this friday. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well happening now, a deepening mystery surrounding the australian man who was found unconscious and seriously
