be conducted peacefully, without any problem. but the idea, the idea that there's political violence or violence in america like this, it's just unheard of. it's just not appropriate. and everybody, everybody must condemn it. everybody. president biden cut his trip short to delaware. this is video of him getting on air force one last night in the coming hours, mr. biden is set to meet with homeland security and law enforcement at the white house. we are continuing to hear firsthand accounts from witnesses who were at yesterday's rally. let's take a listen to one man, a doctor who saw the man who was shot and killed, saying he helped carry the man out of the venue first. i was in shock because i know what gunshots sound like, so i knew there were gunshots. i just i couldn't tell from where they were coming from. that first seven shots that went off the man got hit. he was killed almost instantly. the woman in the bleachers, she got injured like she got hit in the forearm. in the hand. and then in those rounds that were fired again, i

certainly people who who may be undecided might become more sympathetic to trump as a result of this, i think we also need to see how trump himself responds. we're seeing bipartisan messages coming out with everyone condemning the political violence, and, you know, that is absolutely the appropriate response. particularly in the immediate hours following an attack like this. but as we know, donald trump is a defiant candidate. he has, used some, some violent rhetoric in the past that seems to be supporting or encouraging violence. and so, i think if he responds to this attack with, you know, kind of vengeance and more violent rhetoric that could also, turn off some voters who are yet undecided, coming up in about 30

that, $2 million prize, but i was out there on friday and they were telling me that they also handed out a sustainability trophy for all of those global teams going around the world and checking off their sustainability goals as they, of course, see the firsthand impacts of climate change, especially out there in our global ocean. so if you're going out to that, have a great time and you support all the teams out there from around the world, let's talk about what's going on here in the bay area. we are looking at some filtered sunshine this morning a bit of a gloomy start to our sunday. so if you want to stay in bed, i don't blame you. we're going to start with mid 60s here in san jose, a foggy up there through parts of the north bay. santa rosa, 56 degrees 59 out in dublin where we see that sun trying to peek through the clouds. and 58 and that drizzle out along the coast. it's going to be a while before we see some of that clearing with the coastal clouds there. even some drizzle up there towards parts of southern marin half moon bay. the rest of us should start to see that clearing as we go on
7:19 am
into lunchtime, but the fog wants to hang around the coastline for their sunday plan. as we go on and take a look at around 2 to 3 this afternoon, notice how it comes filtering back in as we go on into our overnight hours. so i think that should also bring some relief to people that have been struggling myself included, with the hot temperatures in our overnight hours. we could even start with a bit of some drizzle and clouds for our monday morning commute. back to work we go. so what can we expect as we plan our week ahead? we're going to continue with that gradual cooling today, tomorrow, tuesday, wednesday, possibly even. we'll take a look at those numbers. but i also want to mention what's going on in the sierra. remember yesterday when we had that kind of muggy feel, the high clouds rolling around? that was that subtropical moisture moving around the bay area and that's going to continue to be a threat in the sierra. so i'm talking tahoe down to yosemite, down to the southern portions of it, where we also have a red flag warning. so those thunderstorms could come with dry lightning, some strong outbursts from the clouds. so anything that does start is going to travel fast
7:20 am
with those gusty winds. now back here in the bay area as we take a look long range, we're also going to be talking about that heat that could return as we go on into late week. so satellite and radar, we see those showers to the north of us and those lightning strikes being detected right just north of fresno around mariposa and yosemite. that entrance there, we're going to continue to see and monitor it as we get that daytime heating in the sierra. and of course, we'll alert you if anything drifts a little bit closer to the bay area. so all of this light winds going on around us, those cloudy skies are going to bring temperatures down a little bit. we have less of those upper 90s and those triple digits are no more 91 in fairfield for you today, as well as morgan hill around the northern portion of the south bay. we're going to keep it in the 80s, 60s and 70s by the water. san mateo 73 for you. and we'll go on into novato and do 84 degrees there. lafayette, i'm looking at you this week. we are going to continue with that cool

down. i'm going to bring you down, not even to the 80s monday. and tuesday, but then going into next week, that's when we're going to start to drink more water, start to feel that heat as we go on into the 90s once again in our inland valleys in san francisco should also see a bit of a gradual warm up as we go on into this week, mainly in the 60s, some low 70s by the end of the week, and our inland valleys no extreme heat. i think 80s are going to be much of a relief for people this week, and then we'll do some low 90s as we go on into the weekend. but weekend rolls around. you start having fun anyway. yeah, definitely. my kids are. i've got them. those water squirters that it's like a fan and it's mists you with water kids. they're having fun. don't know how lucky they are, but yeah, they're enjoying the heat because they have that relief. cynthia, thanks so much. it is just about 721 right now. still ahead this morning on today in the bay we have a devastating update to that breaking news we brought to you yesterday morning, a three year old who vanished in the east bay

7:39 am
that's 22% have actually been suffered assassination attempts. now, here's the interesting thing is that this country is 248 years old, 248 years old. during that time i mentioned ten. but guess what? over the last 50 years, five of those events have occurred. five of those events in the last 50 years. so it shows you the extent to which this kind of activity, if you will, has ratcheted up considerably in the past couple of generations. and, and it gives you reason to pause what's going on with this country. of course, we look about guns. we know how prevalent they are with especially those long guns with semi-automatics. they're all over the place. well, here's another example. so what else can we say about threats in the united states? you know, i think capitol police must record at least what their intelligence or what their knowledge is. the funny thing is, violence in this country has actually gone down over the last few years.
7:40 am
violence in general, political violence, however, has increased. you mentioned the capitol police 8000 plus incidents occurred in the capitol, threats against members of congress in the last couple of years. the one 2023 only federal judges more than doubled the attempts or the threats on their lives in the last year or two more than doubled between 21 and 2023. you look at these things and one list after another, you see a problem. election workers 40, nearly 40% have felt harassed threatened in the last couple of years. these are huge numbers of people who lead our country, people who we respect, people who we think are going to take us out of whatever morass we might be in and look at the kind of pressures that they've been suffering. it's terrible. and, you know, everyone's now coming out speculating. perhaps this could have people who are undecided, sympathizing with president trump. how do you see this
7:41 am
potentially impacting things as they unfold towards november? a couple of things come to mind. first of all, we know that president trump is revered by republicans. so you can certainly see that that in that convention, there's going to be an awful lot of energy supporting the president. the question is, will it be positive? get going on. we love you. we poor you, you know, or will it be negative blaming the democrats in this case as you saw in a couple of those quotes, you mentioned the irony is, is that former president trump has actually played down political violence during the whole time he's he was president ignoring it. and sometimes even suggesting it's not so bad. and here he is, 180, if you will. he is now hit by that political violence. well, that changed things a little bit. don't know what effect on the election will it have. still it's 110 days away. don't know. but i think at the end of the day, this probably isn't going to be nearly as big as an event as the democrats trying to find their way out of the mess that they're in. right? look, nobody, nobody

likes an assassination attempt against anybody. republican, democrat. it doesn't matter. these are things that americans, americans just have to say aren't right. yeah. we need to stand united as the united states right now. larry, as always, thanks for your insight. have a great day. at 741, this news has the world's attention. as you might imagine, former president barack obama commenting on the shooting, tweeting on x, saying, quote, there is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy, although we don't yet know exactly what happened, we should all be relieved that former president trump wasn't seriously hurt and use this moment to recommit ourselves to civility and respect in our politics. michelle and i are wishing him a quick recovery. overseas china's president xi jinping, expressed his compassion and sympathy to mr. trump in a statement this morning. a spokesperson said in

campaign rally after a gunman opened fire. at least two people are dead. a person attending the rally and the suspected shooter. two others remain critically wounded in the hospital. so what does security look like at a presidential campaign event? we spoke with michael linenger, a retired san jose police officer and current law enforcement analyst. it's generally, practice that they go through metal detectors, entrance and exits are carefully monitored. it's not unusual for secret service to monitor, or actually connect with law enforcement agencies, but there is an advanced team from the secret service that comes out. and again, the site survey is actually quite, expansive. and it's quite an operation. it's not just the president showing up. you'll have different law enforcement agencies. it's not just the secret service, atf will be there. they'll be undercover, the counter sniper teams. you won't even see them come in. they'll come in in

several vans and just literally disappear, but they are everywhere. so for this to happen, it didn't happen at the venue itself. it happened separate from the venue, from a rooftop. and it's my understanding that the rooftop was not flat now. it could be wrong, but it's my understanding that it was not flat, which makes locating a sniper, even more difficult. once the shots have been fired, they have spotters, they ring out and they eliminate them. unfortunately, he was able to injure president trump as well as kill another bystander, which is truly sad. we will continue to follow this investigation closely for you. be sure to join us beginning at 5 p.m. tonight right here on nbc bay area or wherever you stream. we also will, of course, post the latest updates as we get them on our website, nbcbayarea.com, and on our free nbc bay area app at 747. we do have much more ahead for you on today in the bay. coming up after that triple digit heat we were experiencing last week, the
