"early today" starts right now. good morning, appreciate you being with me. i'm frances rivera. republicans are gathering to officially nominate donald trump while the country grapples with the horrific and historic assassination attempt of the former president. the investigation intensifying into how this attack unfolded. nbc's jay gray joins us now from butler, pennsylvania. good morning, jay. there are a lot of questions this morning about how a shooter was able to get so close to this event. >> reporter: good morning, frances. yeah, no, you're absolutely right. and this area still locked down, as you can see by the fence just behind me here. look, multiple federal investigations going on right now. the fbi tryingto learn more about the suspect in this case, as we remember and many still shocked by the idea that there was an attempted assassination on a former president carried out in the field just behind us

here. what i can tell you is the president is set to be okay, has traveled to milwaukee and is keeping his schedule, saying that he won't let any shooter or attempted assassin in his words change his schedule or the events that are going on, won't let that person change anything. let's talk a little bit about the suspect in this case, 20 years old, thomas matthew crooks. someone that the fbi says was a loner an outcast in high school, many saying that he was bullied at times during his time in high school, but has no real history and no real background. in fact, was unknown to law enforcement before the attempted attack here. as you talk about a separate investigation going on right now, when it comes to how this all unfolded, how a spot 150 yards or so from the stage of this rally was left open and accessible, an elevated spot on a rooftop. the secret service now being

called to task over that. homeland security as well as an independent investigation under way to try and determine how all of this happened. and of course we heard from the president last night addressing the nation from the oval office and talking about the need to calm political tensions. the vitriol of this political campaign season, and to come together in unity. that's a message we expect to hear, frances, as well from former president trump as he speaks later this week at the republican national convention. >> what a dynamic that has shifted for the convention and for the country. jay, thank you. the father of two is being hailed a hero this morning after shielding his family from the bullets on saturday. corey comperatore was killed by gunfire, two others were injured but are in stable condition. former president trump was graze td in his right ear. our dasha burns talked to

witnesses. >> reporter: pennsylvania state police releasing the names of three victims shot during the attempted assassination of former president trump. 57-year-old david dutch and 74-year-old james copenhaver now in stable condition. 50-year-old corey comperatore was killed in the crossfire. joseph main was just feet away from comperatore when the shots rang out. >> it was chaotic because half the people were looking because they thought it was fireworks. >> reporter: a 30-year-old vet rand and former chief. the station now reeling from the loss. >> this close to home and right in our neighborhood we find out that one of our own was taken, his life was taken too early, it's hard to process. >> reporter: the men hanging a symbol of mourning on the firehouse and on his locker

where his uniform still hangs. >> reporter: what's it like to stand here next to his locker where you spent time with him and to see? >> it's heartbreaking but it's a true honor, being able to speak about how good of a man he was. >> reporter: for people that didn't get the privilege of knowing corey, what do you want the world to know about him? >> that they missed out on getting to know a great man. a god-fearing, family-loving man, he would do anything for anyone and that he was a man full of love, never knew him to hate anything. we truly lost a good one. >> reporter: the rally a nightmare for so many. >> how are you feeling right now? >> my mama instincts were when he grabbed my hand i knew my son was scared to death. he hasn't held my hand since 5 or 6 years old. >> reporter: erin was in the first row in front of former president trump. >> is that sharp shooter went across, trump turned his head, his ear must have been nipped. >> reporter: a chain of events

fresh as she recalled them last night. >> i feel sad for everybody. you don't like the guy, don't vote for him. don't skill him. we love the guy, we're going to vote for him. >> our thanks to dasha for that report. the investigation is intensifying into the 20-year-old gunman. nbc's shaquille brewster has the latest on the search for a possible motive. >> reporter: a more complete picture of suspected shooter thomas matthew crooks. >> the shooter may be deceased, but the investigation is very much ongoing. >> reporter: the fbi saying it has no indications of crooks having any mental health issues. previously unknown to law enforcement the 20-year-old was a registered republican who according to campaign finance reports donated $15 to a democratic group. the investigation now shifting roughly 50 miles south to crooks' home in bethel park, pennsylvania. the county bomb squad telling nbc news they entered his residence, some close neighbors were evacuated, others shaken by loud sounds. >> it's a quiet neighborhood and

what goes on in everybody's homes, we just don't know. you know, what people are going through in their own life, we just don't know. >> reporter: two officials telling nbc news that law enforcement found a number of suspicious canisters or containers in the suspect's vehicle near the rally but say it's unclear if they were functional explosive devices. >> thomas crooks. >> reporter: and we're starting to hear from people who were familiar with crooks for years. former school mate jason cooler describing the 20-year-old as a loner who was regularly bullied for wearing hunter gear and a surgical mask to class. >> he would sit alone at lunch. i mean, he was just an outcast and you know how kids are nowadays, so they're going to see someone like that and they're going to target him because they think it's funny or whatever. >> reporter: authorities without a clear motive as they attempt to piece together what led to this tragedy. >> insane. it's just like -- this is where i live. like the fact that it's coming out of here is just mind-boggling.

never would have thought that. >> and our thanks to shaq for that report. let's turn now to nbc's vaughn hillyard who is in milwaukee where the republican national convention is about to get under way. good morning, vaughan. >> reporter: good morning, frances. in a matter of hours the republican national convention will gavel in. we expect this afternoon the roll call to take place. that is when donald trump will formally be nominated by the more than 2,000 delegates inside of this arena to be the gop's nominee. for donald trump, of course, the concerning part coming from this weekend is the attempted assassination of him in pennsylvania. he arrived on sunday night into milwaukee along with his campaign team. he is not anticipated to speak until thursday night when he is expected to address the arena for his nomination acceptance speech, but we still anticipate that thinks vice presidential running mate will be announced as soon as today ahead of that

roll call vote. so there are still a lot of unknowns here heading into this convention. donald trump suggested to the washington examiner on sunday that he has rewritten his speech for thursday night, focused on unifying america. of course, security a foremost concern here as well. the secret service on sunday saying that they are well-prepared for this moment, that they have been planning with state and local law enforcement for 18 months to ensure the proper security is in place. there is a hard perimeter immediately around this arena here that is meant for only folks that are delegates or campaign staff or credentialed press or members that are invited in, and then there is the broader area where the public is welcomed in. and so there is a lot coming into this day. we expect four days for this convention and for donald trump much writing on this with just 113 days left until the

election. >> vaughn hillyard for us. thank you. turning to other headlines this morning after alec bal baldwin's case was dismissed the lawyer for hannah gutierrez-reed is seeking to have his client freed. a prop gun went off and killed cinematographer halyna hutchins. she is serving an 18 month sentence for involuntary manslaughter. her lawyer told nbc news we are going to be filing on the same basis on discovery violations which have occurred throughout her case and continue to occur. baldwin's case was thrown out after the judge found that the prosecution withheld evidence. police in alabama are investigating a nightclub shooting that left four people dead and at least ten others injured. police say a gunman drove by an event center late saturday night where the party was being held and then opened fire. authorities also say there was some kind of altercation inside the club but it's not clear yet if that is connected to the shooting. so far there have been no
