5:00 am
5:01 am
importantly, where a fellow americans right now at five new calls for calm and unity after the terror in pennsylvania. the latest on the assassin who tried to kill former president trump, and emotional new reaction from one attendee. and back here at home. back in court. attorneys hoping to get a new trial for scott peterson. prepare for the next phase of arguments, and we expect a key ruling today. this is today in the bay. good morning to you. happy monday. i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for laura garcia and i'm marcus washington. we'll have a look at that commute with mike coming up in just a bit. but first let's talk about that forecast coming off of a nice weekend. it was great over the weekend a little humid at times. but we are going to see the humidity dropping today. and we're also going to have cooler temperatures. take a look at where we're starting this morning in san jose. it's
5:02 am
63 degrees there. it's 59 in san rafael, and we're seeing temperatures in the upper 50s from dublin to san francisco. here's a look at our highs for today. really nice right. this is actually cooler than normal for a lot of spots like san jose with a high of 80 degrees. we'll be up to 88 in livermore and 85 in concord and upper 70s for napa, while we'll see a high of 66 in san francisco. we will have a several days like this. so we'll talk more about that. and an end of the week warm up in a few minutes. mike, you were saying suddenly the reports have calmed down. yeah, we had an issue going on at 680 up here near mckee and then 17 down toward the summit. both cleared up a couple of other incidents over in the contra costa county, also cleared near the antioch bridge. so we were looking at a smooth drive. it does register with some construction work that is blocking northbound 680 for the sensor reads. however, on the grid for caltrans, there's no work slated, so we'll continue to watch that. i'll
5:03 am
check those live cameras in a couple of seconds, but i think everything should have cleared throughout the east bay. getting into san francisco. beautiful, easy drive and a nice clear view of that city with some low clouds. the top of that salesforce building. back to you. all right. thank you mike. so we begin with that breaking news following the assassination attempt on former president donald trump. investigators are still pressing for answers in what is a critical week ahead of the 2024 election and the republican national convention kicks off today. that attempt happened during a rally in pennsylvania on saturday by 20 year old thomas matthew crooks, who investigators say was able to get within 150 yards of the presumptive gop nominee before firing a gun. 150 yards. of course, just a football field and a half. yeah. homeland security agents are now trying to figure out just how he was able to get so close. now, the fbi investigating the incident as domestic terrorism. a reminder, as you've likely seen, the video, you might find it disturbing. now, former president trump there addressing
5:04 am
the crowd as that bullet nicks his ear. you can see that video of secret service agents rushing towards trump, then eventually leading him off of the stage. a former fire chief was killed in that violence. the wife of 50 year old says that he actually drove dove on his family to protect them from those bullets. two other attendees were shot as well. both remain in the hospital this morning. now, leaders on both sides of the aisle, they are pledging for an end and pleading for an end to all of the violence to the political violence that is now. that includes president biden, who spoke last night from the oval office. there is no place in america for this kind of violence or for any violence ever. period. no exceptions. we can't allow this violence to be normalized. we need leaders of all parties on both sides to call that out and make sure that happens so that we can go forward and maintain our free society, that we all are blessed
5:05 am
to have. now, the investigators say that crooks was armed with a semiautomatic rifle registered to his father. they also found explosive devices inside his vehicle. meantime, the former president is now speaking out in a series of different interviews calling for a very surreal experience and adding, quote, i'm not supposed to be here. i was supposed to be dead. end quote. now this morning on the today show, trump's senior adviser jason miller, spoke with the rnc about how the president is doing. well, president trump is waking up this morning doing very well. feels very fortunate to be alive. and as he said, it's only by the grace of god that he's even still with us. it's miraculous that president trump turned his head just that slight amount at the right moment to avoid the bullet and the message that president trump is coming out of this is very simple. we have to unite america. we have to unite the country. now a southern california man attending that rally is opening up about his
5:06 am
traumatic experience. his name is blake marnell. he is from san diego. and in the video you see him front and center facing that podium. after the gunfire, he says he initially had trouble putting together what happened and he still can't believe that somebody lost their life. but he is hoping that america can rise above the tragedy. this is a situation that could make someone afraid. but broadly speaking, we're not going to solve anything through fear. we're not going to solve anything through violence in our political spectrum either. so i'd like people to consider another solution, which is hope. and, you know, a plan to move our country forward in a better direction, he says. a wave of emotion washed over the crowd when they saw the former president get up. he was also said that there was shock. there was anger and many, many prayers. now, as we've mentioned, the republican national convention starts in
5:07 am
just hours in milwaukee. here is a live look. this morning. there. now, governor gavin newsom is deploying law enforcement from california to help with security. today in the bay's brie jackson is in milwaukee covering the growing security concerns following saturday's assassination attempt. good morning. so security is obviously tight here in milwaukee for the republican national convention. the secret service says that they have been preparing for this event for 18 months now. the assassination attempt on former president trump over the weekend has really motivated his supporters here in milwaukee. the message from the former president is that this convention should be business as usual. he posted on social media that he had considered delaying his arrival, but he decided that he could not let the shooter change the scheduling or anything else. so the former president did arrive here in milwaukee last night. the convention will gavel in this afternoon. then we expect the roll call vote today when
5:08 am
donald trump will formally be nominated in milwaukee. brie jackson nbc news and nbc news will continue our coverage of the republican national convention. it gets underway at 630 tonight. before that, you can watch an exclusive one on one interview between president biden and nbc's lester holt. that's at 6 p.m. at 8 p.m, we will air american ninja warrior ahead of the special newscast with all of your top headlines at nine. well, happening today in redwood city, new arguments get underway as attorneys seek a new trial for convicted killer scott peterson today in the bay's thom jensen is live outside the courthouse where peterson will appear remotely. as we've seen in prior hearings. but, tom, we expect that we're going to get a pretty quick decision on some dna evidence. good morning. yeah kris this was something that was discussed late last week. as you know, attorneys for the defense team and prosecutors could not agree on where a particular piece of
5:09 am
dna evidence should be tested, which laboratory it should be tested at. in this 20 year old case, scott peterson was convicted in 2004 of murdering his pregnant wife, laci, and the couple's unborn son after the remains were discovered in the san francisco bay, and he was sentenced to death. his death sentence was overturned four years ago, and he's serving a life sentence at mule creek state prison. late last week, lawyers for both sides disagreed about which lab should handle the dna testing for a piece of duct tape that was found on laci peterson's pants. the judge suggested a third independent lab and asked both sides to review the facility's credentials and come back today, where she'll decide on where the testing will be done. we talked to a legal expert who says it might not seem like a big deal, but that duct tape dna evidence could be crucial. will that piece of duct tape generate any new information that could lead to the conclusion that scott
5:10 am
peterson didn't kill laci, or that someone else did? the judge is expected to hear three more key defense motions on witness statements, post-conviction discovery and recordings that were not included in the original trial. the question is whether or not that new evidence should be allowed. both sides expected to be in court arguing this. as we said, peterson will again appear remotely from his prison cell or from a prison facility. mule creek state prison, later on this morning. that's expected to start at 9 a.m. this morning. we're live in redwood city. thom jensen today in the bay. all right. thank you so much, tom. 509 for you this morning as we take a live look out in dublin, folks on the road getting moving. and how are they feeling out there? well, probably nice and cool. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that forecast for us coming out the house this morning. kari again, i was like, oh, it's nice and cool. it is nice out there. and so great to know that we do have some cooler
5:11 am
weather that will be sticking with us, at least to start out our new work week. and we're also going to continue on with sunshine. right now we're in the low 60s in the south bay. we'll stay in the 60s through about 10:00 in san jose at noontime. it's at a very comfortable 75 degrees and only headed for the upper 70s here today. we may even see a few spots around town reaching 80 degrees, but it will be a cooler day with upper 70s and mountain view. i don't know if it gets any better than this. this time of year we are still looking at a wide range in temperatures from mid 60s and half moon bay to upper 80s in livermore. we'll also reach a high of 88 in morgan hill today, but we'll talk about the rest of the week coming up in a few minutes. mike, do you have some lower numbers on your. we do. a couple of places are even lower than before the weekend. kari great news at great gas in san jose on stevens creek boulevard not far from valley fair. our best price is the state's second best. that's 363 a gallon at the top of the list. great way to start the week there, right?
5:12 am
concord still offers a bunch of 3.99. we'll point out arco on monument boulevard today and the same best in solano county. the bottom price here is the lowest for vallejo 3.99 at valero on sacramento street. thank you for sharing those updates. great way to start the week at gasbuddy.com on the roadways. not bad either. pretty calm in the tri valley. we're looking at these sensors lighting up once again. highway 84. whatever was going on northbound 680 has again cleared those sensors just finished lighting up there north through pleasanton. of course, the commute southbound all the way here, coming across the benicia bridge, fine carquinez bridge and the bay bridge which shows a nice easy drive. here's the bridge over toward richmond. looks like someone's getting ready to leave that parking lot. getting on to that. and it shouldn't be a problem for that. merge with light traffic over toward the north bay. back to you. good to see you. thank you. mike. do you know that song? it's so easy to honor one longtime bay area resident ahead on today in the bay, san francisco's tribute to a legendary vocalist. that's not
5:13 am
me. all right. and amazon out with its ai. you can ask questions about products, but you know what? i'll show you how you can ask questions about anything. and scott, you know what a super bowl champion scoring big with one young fan. the surprise of a lifetime for him and his family to see it all .
5:14 am
5:15 am
we're nice and cool this
5:16 am
morning. temperatures in the low 60s at 8:00 and a gradual warming trend today as we enjoy a day with cooler than normal temperatures. a lot of sunshine too, and not as humid as that humid as it was over the weekend. so we'll take a look ahead to the rest of our week coming up in a few minutes. and right now we're looking at palo alto. these lights are going north on university and it's a smooth drive. although i was just noticing a pretty good volume of traffic. but they might have just been a burst. it kind of calmed down. now that's what we'll like to look for this morning. for the next half hour, we should see a few more folks on the east bay especially. we'll check that out. well, good morning. good monday to you. the stock market continues to do very well. we are seeing bonds move higher in what investors are calling the trump trade. the expectation trump will win the election pushing bonds higher because investors expect inflation and deficit spending under trump to increase. now that is not new. we saw the trump trade after biden's debate performance a few weeks back.
5:17 am
shares in truth social, which trade as djt, were up big. no good financial reason for that. the company loses money quarter after quarter, but really this is a it's an emotion driven stock. google going forward with a major takeover of a cybersecurity company called wiz that's worth $23 billion, according to the wall street journal, latest data out of china shows economy there slowing much faster than experts expected gdp 4.7% in the second quarter, which if that happened, the united states, that would be amazing growth. but we're far ahead of china, which is why it grows faster. china has the world's second largest economy. the chinese government holding meetings this week about growth and how to prop up currency and housing. elon musk is publicly endorsed. donald trump for president bloomberg discovered musk had been donating money to a pro-trump pac before the endorsement. trump and musk have
5:18 am
had kind of an on again, off again relationship. musk quit trump's panel of economic advisers after charlottesville, and musk at one point said he would not endorse any candidate. hurts sending emails to regular customers offering tesla cars at big discounts. it started selling them this spring as it tries to reduce the number of electric cars in its fleet, with a price of around 21,000. not including a federal tax break of 4000 puts him about $17,000 a car and amazon has rolled out its ai assistant to all users of the amazon app. you can ask it questions about products like does this dishwasher soap work well with ge dishwashers? and you'll get an instant answer. a number of people have discovered you can actually ask the amazon. i called rufus anything you want. you don't have to stick questions about products on the page, for instance, you can ask it for a good recipe for a kale salad on the dishwasher, soap page. you don't even have to spell recipe right? it'll give it to you. lemon juice, parmesan
5:19 am
cheese, cranberries. so if you've ever wanted to try out ai, here's a cheap way of doing it. you do have to update your amazon app to get the new feature, but i've been encouraging people to try out ai because it will do so many things that you never expected, right? all right, well, there you go. don't be scared. don't be scared. scared. all right. thanks, scott. over the weekend, tahoe hosted the american century golf tournament at the edgewood resort. the annual tourney features celebrities competing against one another, and it was during that tournament that this little guy, theo from palo alto, was able to get kansas city chiefs tight end travis kelce to sign his paper airplane. his parents, we are told, are not the biggest kelce fans. but after he signed his paper airplane, they admit they dislike him a little less. so what's mom's beef with kelce. what's that. she's a big 49ers fan of course no surprise. go mom go mom. our happening today linda ronstadt day is being celebrated in san francisco. yeah this is to honor the
5:20 am
performer's 78th birthday. ronstadt actually retired from performing back in 2011 due to neurological problems. a group of local fans petitioned the board of supervisors to honor ronstadt for her philanthropy, artistry, and her decision to call san francisco home. for the last 30 years, the city gave its approval of that declaration. request last week. i mean, that voice, right? yeah it's amazing. it's one of the better ones of all the singers out there. yeah. you know, i would say. yeah kerry. nice pleasant weather after that heat wave, we went to visit family in texas to get away from the heat. that's what we had to do. it was so hot here. well, it was it was cooler there. it was cooler there. what? okay, well, i mean, barel. could have just waited a few days to change here. saved a few bucks. we do have cooler weather and we're looking at our air quality because over the weekend you probably noticed it looked a little hazy. we do have numerous
5:21 am
fires burning across the region, and some of that smoke may be moving into parts of the coast as well as the bay, but we are looking overall at some good air quality for today as we get a westerly wind coming off of the ocean and helping to cool down our temperatures too. we're starting out at 55. in sonoma it is 60. in oakland and 58 degrees in dublin. san jose. we're starting out at 63 degrees. and then as we take a look at our high, it's only going to make it up to about 80 in san jose and fremont, 77 in hayward and concord, looking at a high today of 85 will be in the upper 70s and low 80s across much of the north bay, while san francisco will be in the 60s. this afternoon. tomorrow it's more of the same. not seeing many changes here with san mateo hitting a high of 71. really nice weather for outdoor activities, and we're also going to have these days where we can give the ac a rest. in much of the bay area, we are still
5:22 am
headed for the low 90s midweek for san martin and morgan hill, as well as fairfield. some of our well inland spots will be definitely hotter, but as we head toward the end of the week, we'll see the return of this that oppressive high pressure that causes the air to sink. it makes the air warm, and it also will heat up those temperatures in parts of the bay area. take a look at san jose starting out the week nice and mild, but we see the steps climbing upward, peaking on friday at 90 degrees, but then coming back down a little bit for the weekend and there may be some heat ahead next week, so we're going to enjoy the cooler weather while we have it, because it will be a hot end to the week with mid to upper 90s for some of our inland valleys. and mike, you were checking in on speeds in the tri-valley, right? because those speed sensors hadn't completely lit up. they are. we see a little recovery. so there must have been the crews that we were talking about north 680 through pleasanton, although they weren't on the caltrans grid, they are not causing any problem. now we're looking at a little slowing, as you expect,
5:23 am
north bay out of vallejo, highway 37. typical. a little bit of slowing heading across that bridge. merritt island and the rest of the bridge is all move very smoothly. those approach is not a problem and we haven't had really anything other than the altamont pass coming with any slowdowns. so that's good for the dublin interchange. back to you. thanks, mike. well, chaos at copa america next on today in the bay. new video of arrests after rowdy fans stormed the gates and the great lakes. some fans went

tickets stormed the gates ahead of the copa america finale. new video shows some of the chaos last night outside the hard rock stadium. that is where colombia faced off against argentina, and police say about a dozen people were arrested. the start of the game was delayed for nearly 90 minutes. now, before the game, fans climbed fences and even scaled air vents to try to get in. others dashed past police and over stadium railings. a handful had to receive medical treatment, and for a time, security actually opened the gates to prevent a stampede. eventually, all trespassers were pushed back behind the entry gates. we will show you the highlights of the actual game coming up in the next half hour. well, arizona mother is talking about a terrifying moment. this is after her daughter strap fell
5:27 am
off mid-ride on a southern california roller coaster. so this happened last week. this is when selena higgins and her ten year old daughter, they were riding the electric eel at san diego seaworld, where her niece skipped the ride, filmed what was happening from the ground. higgins says that she noticed her daughter strapped dangling in front of them as they hung upside down. that ride lasted only 47 seconds, but higgins said it felt like 20 minutes, and she tried to secure that strap. later, she said that a guest service worker refused to believe what happened. what he asked me, he did. you read the disclaimer before getting on the ride and shockingly, i said, does does the disclaimer explain that the comfort straps are optional? because if it does, then please, i have no case her. and then he laughed and said, i don't think so. now she says that she emailed dozens of seaworld and cal osha contacts. then she made a tiktok post that went viral. nbc did reach out to
5:28 am
seaworld, which has not yet responded. cal osha is investigating. that gave me the shivers. i'm scared. horrifying. all right, next top stories. we are following for you today, including full access at last. big update from the east bay credit union targeted by hackers and the extended frustrations felt by one particular

week ahead for donald trump after the attempt on his life. we have team coverage on the investigation following the shooting in pennsylvania and the stepped up security as the republican national convention gets underway in just hours, plus, tracking the return of drought conditions in parts of california. what this all means with the summer heat now in full swing, this is today in the bay my grass is feeling it dry and brown, but i'm watering it now. i have some brown spots, but i also have dog. all right. good morning to you on today in the bay. i'm marcus washington and i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for laura garcia. we want to take a look at that forecast because meteorologist kari hall says a little cooler today. yes. and it's going to be a nice one. we're starting out with a few clouds here and there. we're seeing it in san francisco with our usual start where we do see those low clouds in dublin. we're right now at 58 degrees
5:32 am
and partly cloudy as you head up to san rafael. and it's 56, a little bit warmer for san jose with some low 60s. take a look at this beautiful sky and the sunrise we have over walnut creek today. now we are going to see temperatures warming up gradually today and staying a little bit below what's normal for this time of year. going from low 60s to briefly hitting the low 80s at 4:00 and then seeing around the bay area a nice and comfortable afternoon. so we'll take a look ahead to the rest of the week coming up in a few minutes. mike, you're expecting some slowing soon in the south bay. yeah, the timing would be we would typically see some slowing in the next ten minutes or so down right here, 101 northbound. we know about that. but then i just heard about something going on, possibly in the tri valley. 680, 84 near that junction there may be a crash. so we'll track that. the speed sensors do show a little slowing there. we expect the slowing out of the altamont. and then there was disturbance. both north and southbound showed slowing on vasco. it's calmed down to just the commute direction now, so we'll continue to track that. but so far nothing unusual for those times
5:33 am
out of contra costa county. we're looking at some slowing. the build for highway four, the build for highway 37, and little blips around richmond and the bay bridges. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, breaking right now and just hours. republicans opened their national convention in milwaukee. and no doubt the attempted assassination of former president donald trump will be front and center. still, countless questions about what happened saturday in pennsylvania. the secret service is now under the microscope for what some believe was a security failure. today in the bay's. jay gray is following the latest on the investigation. former president trump, traveling to milwaukee for today's opening of the republican national convention. just a day after the attempt on his life late sunday. posting the message unite america on social media as president biden addresses a stunned nation from the oval office. you know, the political record in this country has gotten very heated. it's time to
5:34 am
cool it down. we all have a responsibility to do that. responsibility at the center of growing questions and frustration over how it could happen, a rooftop less than 150 yards from the rally stage left open and accessible. the alleged shooter seen in this new video, able to fire at least eight shots from the position before he's taken out by secret service snipers. the buck does stop with the us secret service. it's their plan. you're responsible so you can't deflect blame on anybody else. president biden ordering an independent investigation into what many in law enforcement are calling a colossal breakdown and profound security failure. if that bullet was two inches to the right, it would have penetrated the former president's forehead and we would have a great american tragedy on our hands. federal agents searching for a motive, say the man accused of pulling the trigger, 20 year old thomas matthew crooks, is still a mystery. unknown to law enforcement before the attempted
5:35 am
assassination. jay gray nbc news, butler, pennsylvania now the white house is saying that first lady jill biden has spoken with former first lady melania trump. scott mcgrew both sides, calling to lower the temperature as the republican national convention gets underway today. yeah. good morning. that call coming from the trump campaign and from president biden himself, jay touched on the president's prime time address last night. i really would like to show you a longer clip if i can. in case you didn't see it, here's the president last night, my fellow americans, i want to speak to you tonight about the need for us to lower the temperature in our politics and to remember, while we may disagree, we are not enemies. we're neighbors. we're friends, coworkers, citizens, and most importantly, we are fellow americans. we must stand together. yesterday's shooting at donald trump's rally in pennsylvania calls on all of us to take a step back, take stock of where we are, how we go
5:36 am
forward from here. thankfully, former trump is not seriously injured. i spoke with him last night and i'm grateful he's doing well, and jill and i keep him and his family in our prayers. now we're also hearing from the trump campaign. here's trump adviser jason miller speaking to the today show. well, president trump is waking up this morning doing very well. feels very fortunate to be alive. and as he said, it's only by the grace of god that he's even still with us. it's miraculous that president trump turned his head just that slight amount at the right moment to avoid the bullet. and the message that president trump is coming out of this is very simple. we have to unite america. we have to unite the country. more with miller coming up at seven. meantime, calls for congressional hearings to investigate the secret services performance at sunday's rally. congressman ruben gallego, a democrat from arizona, saying in a letter calling for hearings this was a security failure at the highest level not seen since
5:37 am
the attempted assassination of president reagan. this cannot happen. i demand accountability. but congressman mike kelly, republican from pennsylvania, telling the washington post, there's a danger in saying these people didn't do their jobs. when i saw them rush to rescue the president, they were doing their job. we need to step back a little and let the process play out. we have new drone footage from the scene, the building on the center top part of your screen, where the shooter was on the roof, shows how close that was. but apparently outside the security zone. that proximity, no doubt, will be the focus of any congressional investigation. the biden campaign, meantime, has canceled a presidential visit to austin today. vice president harris will delay a tuesday trip to campaign in florida. president biden was already scheduled to sit down with our lester holt tonight at six, and that interview is still on live pictures of the republican national convention in milwaukee. former president trump is already in milwaukee.
5:38 am
the original plan had him commuting from his trump property in chicago. that changed a few weeks ago, after trump was accused of badmouthing milwaukee. trump delegates will gather tonight to nominate trump as the republican candidate. we, of course, still don't know who trump's pick for vice president will be, but we know kris that's going to come this week. all right. thank you, scott. and coming up at seven the today show, we'll have full team coverage with the latest developments on the investigation and donald trump's recovery. this is ahead of his party officially nominating him as its presidential candidate. there are some programing changes you'll want to take note of at 6:00 tonight. you can tune in for that exclusive one on one interview between lester holt and president biden. as scott mentioned, that's ahead of nbc's coverage of the republican national convention. that's at 630. at 8:00, you can catch american ninja warrior ahead of a special newscast. with all of your top headlines coming up tonight at nine. well, happening
5:39 am
today, the chp. they will quadruple the number of patrols in oakland and the surrounding area. this was during a news conference last week. governor gavin newsom talked about the boost it's been for crime fighting efforts. that program has been extended for at least the next four months. since february, chp has helped make 562 arrests, along with the seizure of dozens of guns and the recovery of nearly 1200 stolen cars. that's a lot of cars. and also today, customers of a bay area credit union targeted by hackers are expected to regain full access of their banking accounts. now, the dublin based patelco has was first actually hit by ransomware attack. this was more than two weeks ago and it took days for the bank to restore some core functions. during that time, credit union members say that they were unable to see their balance or access funds online until this past weekend. pop the app open and i was able to see balances, all the payments that
5:40 am
have been made over the last, what, two weeks now? i guess, have cleared, not necessarily on the dates that we made them, but they're also not showing late on the other end. so looks like everything's okay for the moment, but it's been, been an exhausting and kind of frustrating couple of weeks, for sure, patelco warns members. for the time being, they should still expect long wait times at the call centers and at those branch locations. all right, well, while it might have been nice while it lasted, but for the first time in months, part of california are now back in drought conditions. meteorologist kari hall, of course, been talking about that. the recent reaction the heat is believed to have actually accelerated those conditions. yeah. so basically what it means is that water levels are a little bit lower than we like to see, as well as some conditions that extend our fire season. but the bay area is not among one of those areas that covers the northeastern corner of california. that's primarily siskiyou county, and it's now in a moderate drought stage, and it
5:41 am
marks the end of a nine month drought free period. the longest such period since 2011. and as we take a look at the map, what's happening here is that we have had some really extreme conditions extreme heat across the pacific northwest. so that's helping to dry out much of the oregon and washington, as well as areas off towards the east. and it's that little corner up there that you're seeing. it's less than 1% of the state that is now in a moderate drought. other areas that are abnormally dry include the northern sierra. and once again, it's not the bay area. and we typically don't see our drought status change during the summer because we typically don't get a lot of rain. so as we're stepping out the door this morning, nice and cool, it's been great to have a cool down and a break from the excessive heat. as we take a look at pleasant hill, we're going from upper 50s to low 70s at noon, and eventually reaching into the low 80s there. today we'll see a high of 71 in san mateo and 77 in napa, 79 today in santa rosa.
5:42 am
and about the same tomorrow, maybe even a touch cooler in some spots. so it's been nice to have a break from the heat, but we will have temperatures ramping up again by the end of the week, so i'll be watching that for you. mike's been watching the road and you're seeing a crash in sunol. yeah. kari, we talked about hearing about something. now it got confirmation. chp says south 680 just at the 84 connector. we do have a crash blocking your slow lane. three vehicles involved in. no, no, no injuries reported, but it is in your commute direction causing some more slowing earlier than you'd expect into sunol out of pleasanton. we're watching that and that will add to the slowing you see it now for folks coming in on 84 and blending in with that traffic just before the crash. now the peninsula very clear. the south bay does show that little bit of slowing that we talked about having started right on time. there may be a crash on 2.37. i'm waiting for details, so we'll track that. meanwhile getting over toward the bay bridge. a little build there at the toll plaza, and we show 37 and highway four. typical there. i want to know,
5:43 am
looking ahead for the week, actually, highway one will have daytime roadwork going on, so watch for that in the area around point reyes and then watch highway 101 also around hearn. there will be also overnight construction going on. so that might be an issue through santa rosa. but again for the morning commute right now we starting to see the backup and a little slowing over at the bay bridge. so those metering lights must be activated because we see the slowing already approaching that bay bridge toll plaza back to you. all right. thanks, mike, for 542 for you this morning. cutting back on school shopping. well, next year on today in the bay. the strategy more families are taking for education essentials. plus no messi no problem for argentina. how fans celebrated their copa américa victory. also a look inside the new home of the beloved oakland restaurant, home of the chicken and waffles. we're going to tell you about my conversation i had. it's an important one to with the owner of that restaurant. why they moved and also kind of what they'reoing in the

expect today in morgan hill. we're in the upper 50s at 8:00 and a few clouds clearing out the rest of the day, and for the most part, we can just leave the air conditioning off. it will be nice to have that break as our temperatures reach into the low 80s here. and we are going to
5:47 am
have several more days like this before it heats up. we'll take a look at our trend throughout the rest of the week. coming up in a few minutes. we're cooler here over in dublin. it's a nice drive though. everything's cool on westbound 580. looking through the area, some of these folks heading south on 680. i think we should have some good news for you as you travel down towards sunol, where we were monitoring that crash coming up. a judge today scheduled to be briefed on the mental health treatment for the man who drove his family off of a cliff on devil's slide. amazingly, everyone in that car, including the wife and two young children, survived that crash happened a year and a half ago. southern california radiologist dharmesh patel was recently released for mental health diversion rather than face a trial. his attorneys argue that he suffered a psychotic break as long as patel completes a two year diversion program, the charges against him will be dropped. and now to a live look at the golden gate bridge, where later this mornin, house lawmaker nancy pelosi will attend a commemoration event for

the recently completed suicide deterrent netting now lining the bridge. pelosi will be joined by community leaders and family members who've lost loved ones. authorities say the net is already working to save lives, reducing the number of suicides at the bridge. the work was completed in january. if you or someone you know is in crisis, there is a toll free hotline you can call for help in english and spanish. the number there on your screen. you can also text or dial 988 on your cell phone. and oakland animal shelter need your help tracking down a stolen van? thieves yesterday stole the van from the east bay spca on baldwin street, south of the coliseum. that van is used to transport animals. anyone who might have seen or know anything about this, you are asked to call opd. let's hope they get that back. new this morning back to school sales are forecast to be flat at best this year as shoppers dial back retail spending. a new deloitte report
5:49 am
estimates that shoppers will spend more than $30 billion or about $586 per student, which is down about $10 from last year. researchers say middle income families are focusing more on value and willing to shop for retailers in-house. generic brands. now, following the chaos ahead of the copa america final, which we told you about earlier, argentina now celebrating a thrilling finish about 60 minutes into the game, star lionel messi had to leave the game with a really swollen ankle. colombia and argentina at that point, we're still locked in a scoreless tie in the 112th minute. you hear that goal? extra time argentina finally broke through. they won the game nil or one nil, capturing their 16th copa america title. our fans in buenos aires probably still celebrating. this is the reaction last night outside one bar when argentina scored that winning goal. it is fair to call
5:50 am
this team a dynasty. argentina won the 2022 world cup after winning the last copa america, which happened during the pandemic in 2021. that was all on my feed instagram feed yesterday. oh yeah, and it was on the tv when i was having brunch yesterday, england and spain. so england and spain. yeah, it was exciting. well, speaking of food, you know, i love food. i know you love. you know i love food. we love food we love. right. we're foodies. right okay. well, but i was able to actually visit the new. i'm talking about the new home of the oakland food staple there. this is a close by. five months ago. its doors, the location just after being there for 20 years. well, i'm talking about the restaurant, if you don't know, home of the chicken and waffles. i actually caught up with its owner, derek johnson, to talk about that move and some of the changes they have over there. so derek, talk to me. i mean, this is a huge staple not only in the oakland but really in the bay area. i heard people in san jose talking about it when i first moved here, talk to me about why did you all decide
5:51 am
to move? oh, well, first of all, how you doing? but we decided to move after 20 years, just relocate to a get a fresh start, also that we had the opportunity to purchase this, space. and so it's very important for us to have ownership now, after 20 years of paying rent, it's time to time to own something. and i think all black businesses, businesses period. but especially those in our community, african american community, we would just do much better and prosper more if we just owned the spaces that we're in. and i want to talk to you about that, because what we are seeing, not only in oakland but across the bay area, a lot of businesses are leaving, pulling out because of the crime, and it's really hitting businesses hard. but you've decided not only to move to a location, but plant your roots even deeper in the community. why was it so important to do that? and how are you all dealing with the crime in the city? well, i'm rooted in oakland. me. i'm born and raised in oakland. i'm third generation. i have five generations. my grandmother just turned 100, so everything i know is oakland, so i it was never a question. would i ever leave the city, crime has as we know in oakland has has been bad, but it
5:52 am
is getting better. the car break ins are down, so we're not seeing glass all over the streets like we used to. and it's just very important to me to keep my business in a community that supported oakland, has built my business, and my employees all live in oakland. most of them are from oakland. majority of them are. so it's very important to me to stay home. that's awesome. it really is. now look, one thing you will notice there, it's a different place, but the same food is so good. there also the welcoming baths. they've also added a wine program. there where they actually pair wines to go well with the food on the menu. we're talking about the collard greens, the candied yams, the mac and cheese. that's a great thing. so if you want to head over there, the new location is at 247 fourth street. this is very close to the former jack london square location. those hours 11 a.m. until 10 p.m, except on wednesday. and that is because they actually allow chefs who don't have a restaurant. they allow them to use that space free of charge, and that way they can build up their business. and hopefully the hope is that they can open up another business within oakland as well and buy the property. yeah i mean, it's hard to buy, but like
5:53 am
if you can buy your restaurant, own your space. he's right. yeah that's really increases your longevity. yeah. building up your community, doing what you can. so he's doing his part. wow. hey, marcus. it was great that you brought some of that food with you this morning as well, right? yeah. well, you like, he's like, i brought it with me. show us some pictures and be, like, kind of dry. it was so good. it's been kind of dry out. really wants to talk about weather now. we keep talking about the weather. good weather to go out. they have the patio now there. so you just did. if we want to go to brunch we could go to brunch there in the patio. you. oh yeah. you know what? on me i was gonna talk about traffic. now all right. cat can come to our producer. wants to go to. we're here at our producer bring you to. we are supporting local businesses. that's what's important. we're going to have some great weather, too. very nice conditions to enjoy the sunshine that we are going to see today. and the cooler temperatures. take a live look outside in san jose and our air quality has improved very much as well. now we are still seeing
5:54 am
the hazy skies here at times, especially over the weekend. you probably noticed that the sky looked really hazy. we do have numerous fires burning across the state and some new ones too, but it's mainly affecting the coast and the bay. elsewhere, the air quality is looking pretty good now. our temperatures this morning in the mid 50s in martinez upper seconds for dublin and fremont. it is now 59 degrees as you're heading out the door and livermore is in the low 60s at 8:00. at 10:00 it's in the upper 60s. and look at this trend. it's going to be great to see our highs only reaching into the 80s. today we're up to 80 in san jose, which is actually about a degree cooler than what's normal for this date. and in san mateo it will be 71 for this afternoon, upper 70s for napa, and into the day tomorrow. it's going to be about the same, maybe even a few degrees cooler in some spots. novato reaching a high of 79 degrees 71 in san mateo, 77 in mountain view and
5:55 am
also staying in the 70s for san jose on wednesday. some of our valleys come up a few degrees. it will be a little bit warmer in the south county, as well as the inland east bay, with concord reaching a high of 90. eventually we are going to see the heat coming back with this high pressure nudging its way back closer to the bay area that increases the heat. it causes that air to sink down. and as it does so, it warms. so we are going to have a spike in those temperatures by the end of the week. just briefly. and there may be some more heat ahead for early next week with highs in the upper 80s and low 90s. but we do have a few days, a few more days of this break before we start to see more 90s. by thursday into friday, the weekend also will be warm in the valleys, while san francisco will see temperatures also warming up. going from mid 60s for the start of the week into upper 70s by friday. mike, you're saying that the tri valley has a delay right now. it does have a delay built up because of that crash. three
5:56 am
vehicles were involved. it looks like everything just cleared up. so speeds are actually starting to improve. that's great for the southbound side. that's great for 84 coming in. but northbound 680 also still shows slowing. i think there's a crew there even though there's nothing on the caltrans grid. if you want to avoid the area in your commute direction, you have a lot longer drive and more slowing. that builds up off the castro valley y and into hayward. so i would say stay the course on 680. things will continue to improve heading south in toward the south bay. the south bay itself shows the northbound side. there's a roadside fire just around mckee. we're checking on that, but so far, typical slowing there and a little bit of a build at the bay bridge. back up. back to you. all right. thanks so much mike. well happening now. crews are mopping up the overnight fire. this is a home in sausalito. it happened a little before 230 this morning along atwood avenue. this is near southview park. marin firefighters say that they arrived and they did not find any flames. however, several lithium ion batteries were found smoldering in the garage. no one was hurt. yikes. our coverage of
