livermore, fairfield and morgan hill, and we're going to have more of this nice, cool weather for much of the bay area heading into tomorrow as well. mike, you're tracking a crash. what's going on? it looks like the bay bridge the incline. we have a crash now. let's see if we found it. our guys in the operations center did see all this slowing happening right here on the incline heading up, and it may be in flux. it sounds like there's a motorcycle crash on the span itself, causing all that slowing. as you see, speeds are kind of flipping around here. it was all red, so they may have moved something over, perhaps to treasure island. we'll track that, but there will be more backup at the toll plaza over the next few. the undoubtedly slowed those metering lights at least until we can get a handle on what's going on on the bay bridge westbound. look at that. the richmond bridge actually looking great there. no delays for bart. so a couple of options if you want to avoid that. bay bridge still recovering in the tri valley south 680 the crash cleared northbound. there may be a crew clearing from overnight work back to you. thank you. mike. well, breaking news this morning following the assassination attempt, former president donald trump is now

speaking out. it comes as that investigation unfolds during a critical week of the election. as the republican national convention kicks off, a former president trump is now calling the shooting a very surreal experience, adding, quote, i'm not supposed to be here. i'm supposed to be dead. today in the bay's brie jackson joins us live from milwaukee, where trump is gearing up for the rnc. and bree, you know, we knew what was going to be happening politically. but now things have changed. and that includes security. yeah. that's right. good morning, marcus kris. so the secret service says that it has been working to cover this event for 18 months, even before that assassination attempt on saturday, former president trump, he posted on social media that he actually considered delaying his arrival here in milwaukee, but he decided that he could not let the shooter change the scheduling or anything else. so you've likely seen the video from saturday, but we do want to give people a warning. you might find it

disturbing. it happened during a rally in pennsylvania. investigators say the shooter was a 20 year old pennsylvania man, thomas matthew crooks, the former president, was addressing the crowd as a bullet nicked his ear. you can see video of secret service agents rushing former president trump off the stage. homeland security agents are trying to figure out how crooks managed to get so close to the former president. the fbi is investigating this incident as domestic terrorism and brie thinking about the suspect here, i know i've seen a lot of interviews of speaking with people who went to school with him back then. what are investigators saying about the suspect's background? so, marcus, what we do know about the suspect so far is that crooks lived in bethel park, pennsylvania. that's about four hours outside of butler, where that shooting happened. crooks was a member of a local gun club and worked as a dietary aide at a nursing facility. he was

killed by the secret service at the rally. investigators say crooks was armed with a semiautomatic rifle that was registered to his father. they also found explosive devices inside of his vehicle. he is believed to have fired eight shots before he was taken down. investigators say crooks was able to get within 150 yards of the presumptive gop nominee. that's just one and a half. football fields. an exact motive for this shooting still remains under investigation. so president trump obviously not the only person who was shot. there was a former fire chief who was killed. two other people who were hurt. do we know anything about those victims? we are learning more information about those victims. kris 50 year old former firefighter corey comparator died following the violence on saturday. he was at the rally with his wife and his two daughters. he dove over them to protect them when gunshots were heard in the crowd and a statement sunday.

pennsylvania's governor said that he died a hero to other attendees were also shot at saturday's rally. both of them remain at the hospital this morning and they are expected to survive. all right. i just such a just surreal time for the nation and the election cycle. thank you so much. brie. so trump's senior adviser jason miller is talking on the today show this morning from milwaukee as well. here's how he says the president is doing right now. president trump is waking up this morning doing very well. feels very fortunate to be alive. and as he said, it's only by the grace of god that he's even still with us. it's miraculous that president trump turned his head just that slight amount at the right moment to avoid the bullet. and the message that president trump is coming out of this is very simple. we have to unite america. we have to unite the country. i'm mueller also says security adjustments are now in the works for future campaign rallies, though he did not talk specifics. now, nbc news will

continue our coverage of the republican national convention, which gets underway at 630 tonight. before that, you can catch an exclusive one on one interview between president biden and nbc's lester holt at six tonight at 8:00, there is american ninja warrior, but that is ahead of a special newscast with all of your top local headlines at nine, 606 right now and happening today in redwood city, new arguments get underway as attorneys seek a new trial for convicted killer scott peterson today in the bay's thom jensen. live for us. outside of the courthouse. this is where peterson will appear remotely and tom, today, during that hearing, they're actually going to be ruling on dna testing. good morning. marcus. yeah late last week, the two sides attorneys for peterson and prosecutors could not agree on which laboratory should be used to test a particular piece of dna evidence from evidence taken in the 20 year old case. in 2004, peterson was convicted of murdering his wife laci, who was

pregnant at the time, and the couple's unborn son after their remains were discovered in the san francisco bay, and he was sentenced to death. his death death sentence was overturned four years ago, and he's serving a life life sentence at mule creek state prison. late last week, both sides had their own preferred lab to handle the dna testing for a piece of duct tape that was found on laci peterson's pants. the judge suggested a third independent lab and asked the lawyers to review the facility's credentials, and she'll decide where the testing should be done. today, a bay area legal expert told us the duct tape, dna evidence could be crucial to peterson's defense. two decades after his conviction. you have to remember there's 20 years now of data base that if they can get a dna positive hit on that duct tape, they can now run that through a system. and that could point to someone other than scott peterson. the defense will present more key motions on

witness statements, post-conviction discovery and recordings that were not included in the original trial. so it's a lot for the judge to consider over the next two days. here at the san mateo county courthouse. we're live in redwood city. thom jensen today in the bay. all right, tom, thank you. well, taking a live look at dublin this morning and things are looking quite mild out there. traffic moving smoothly, but the weather is as well. kari says we're going to keep it cool. yeah. it's nice to have a break from the high heat. thinking back to last week when we had widespread triple digits and we have this beautiful view looking at walnut creek this morning, one of the spots where we can actually see the sunrise. we have seen the clouds moving in this morning and as you're stepping out the door in oakland, it will be in the upper 50s heading to work with a mostly cloudy morning which will hold those temperatures down. keep it from warming up too quickly, as we'll look at a high today of about 73 degrees here it will be 83. in dublin and in

the upper 80s for morgan hill, while in san francisco it stays in the 60s. today, much of the north bay in the upper 70s and low 80s. looking great to start out this week we'll talk about what's ahead in a few minutes. mike's been eyeing the gas prices around the bay area trying to find you the lowest one. yeah. and while chris was getting excited because those prices are lower in a couple of spots, i warn you, only a couple spots. kris sorry, but i'll show you where those stations are. in fact, we got great news at great gas in san jose. san jose has been a great leader throughout the state. stevens creek boulevard has our best at great gas, stevens creek, the second best in the state. in fact, that's 363 a gallon. good stuff. and concord still offers a lot of 399. we'll point to arco on monument boulevard today and the same best price. 399 in solano county. that's the vallejo vallejo's valero on a sacramento street. thank you for sharing those prices and those updates on gasbuddy.com on the roadways. we still have slowing in sunol around through pleasanton. i should say for 680 both directions. the crash clearing

quarter. but it's an emotion driven stock. google going forward with a major takeover of a cybersecurity company called wiz worth $23 billion, according to the wall street journal, the latest data out of china shows the economy there slowing much faster than experts expected gdp 4.7% in the second quarter, which if that happened in the united states, that'd be amazing growth. but we are far ahead of china, which is why it grows faster. china has the world's second largest economy. the communist government there holding meetings this week about growth and to how prop up the currency and housing during this crisis. elon musk is publicly endorsed. donald trump for president bloomberg discovered musk had been donating money to a pro-trump pac before the endorsement. trump and musk have an on again, off again relationship must quit. trump's panel of economic advisors after charlottesville. musk at one point said he would not endorse any candidate. hurts sending emails to its regular customers

you have in the refrigerator. it'll give you advice about why your dog is acting a certain way. you know, if you don't want to spend the 20 bucks on chatgpt, update your amazon app and give it a shot, okay? and then when they figure out that we've been using it. yeah, other than products, then they'll charge. they'll probably, you know, shut that down pretty quick. yeah. you gotta pay. all right. thank you scott i'll see you. lions are a mainstay for san diego tourists. you know that. and for the wildlife ecosystem. but a group is pushing to get them out of la jolla cove. this is because there have been dangerous interactions between the sea lions and people. a community advisory group wants those sea lions off the beach, and they are trying to avoid the city permanently closing the beach, which is what happened at a stretch of the coastline in la jolla. now, other locals think there needs to be better management plan for the wildlife to allow the wildlife and people to coexist. we are not advocating for closure of this

area. we know that it's used extensively by swimmers and snorkelers and scuba divers, but we do feel that, you know, it needs to be needs to be better managed. our san diego city council president says that the council is working with city departments on the management of the cove and working to ensure continued, unfettered public access to the beach and waters of la jolla cove and things like better signage and intervention by park rangers. well, now to a public appearance for princess kate middleton. yesterday she turned up at the wimbledon tournament and was greeted with a standing ovation. it was only her second public appearance since she shared her cancer diagnosis in march. her daughter and sister joined her at the match. afterwards, the princess handed the winner, carlos alcaraz, a winning trophy. it's nice to see her looking well. yes, i know she's still undergoing treatment, but she looks well. yeah well, you know what? over the weekend, tahoe

hosted the american century golf tournament at the edgewood resort. the annual tournament features celebrities competing against one another, of course. and it was during that tournament that this little guy, theo from palo alto, was able to get kansas city chiefs tight end travis kelce to sign his paper airplane. we are told that his parents you know they're not the biggest kelce fans. but after he signed his paper airplane, they had to admit that they dislike him a little bit less. mom has a beef with kelce because she's a niners fan. yeah palo alto man come on. yeah i mean but nice of him to you know give the kid a that is. and he remembers i just thought it was cool. he they still make those paper planes. the kids got so much going on with technology they still can't. you can't fold a digital message. right? you get to print it out first and then make the airplane. i like that, i bet it was made out of the program for the tournament. yeah. and i guess weather and the tournament probably was pretty nice as

well. yeah, it was a little warm there over the weekend with some low 80s, but that's not too bad. you know, we spoil the celebrities. yeah. we had some nice weather cooling down for the bay area too. and we're waking up to sunshine heading out in san jose now. we are seeing some clouds moving into much of the rest of the bay area, like san francisco. starting out with some low clouds, some mist and drizzle, and the clouds will linger throughout much of the morning and into part of the afternoon as well. we may see some clearing for a couple of hours right around 5:00. we're at 65 degrees and nice and sunny in the city, but away from that coastal fog we will have some warm temperatures, but at least we're not talking about searing heat for today. it will be in the mid 80s for concord and even up to about 80 for san jose. a lot of these temperatures are about normal, even maybe just slightly cooler than normal. and it continues into tomorrow as well with martinez reaching a high of 80 degrees low 70s for san mateo and some mid 80s for

the tri valley. it does start to warm up a few degrees in our forecast on wednesday, with some low 90s in san martin as well as fairfield and novato up to about 83 degrees. but then by the end of the week, it's going to start to warm up as this high pressure makes its way closer to the bay area. that causes the clear skies, the air kind of sinks down under high pressure, exerting a high amount of pressure on the earth. so what happens when the air is sinking? it warms up. and so we're going to have some warmer temperatures by the end of the week. taking a look at san jose. not triple digits, not upper 90s but 90. and that's our warm up that we are going to see this week. and then coming down a few degrees. and it may be a warm start to early next week, but of course we're focused on the start to this week. that's going to be great for us with some mild temperatures and heating up by the end of the week into saturday. but once again, it's not really extreme and we're

ruben gallego, the democrat from arizona, saying in a letter calling for hearings this was a security failure at the highest level not seen since the attempted assassination of president reagan. this cannot happen. i demand accountability. but congressman mike kelly, republican from pennsylvania, telling the washington post, there's a danger in saying these people didn't do their jobs when i saw them rushed to rescue the president, they were doing their job. we need to step back a little bit and let the process play out. we do have new drone footage of the scene. the building at the top center of your screen, where the shooter was on the roof, shows just how close that was. but apparently outside the security zone, the proximity will no doubt be the focus of any congressional investigation. the governor of pennsylvania has ordered the flags in the state lowered to half staff to remember firefighter corey mayor thao, who was struck and killed by the would be assassin's bullet. described as a girl dad, he had a wife and two daughters. two

other spectators were struck and injured. the biden campaign team, meantime, has canceled a presidential visit to austin today. vice president harris will delay a tuesday trip to campaign in florida. president biden was already scheduled to sit down with our lester holt at 6:00 tonight. marcus, that interview is still on. no doubt the subject matter is changed. all right. thank you. scott. well, starting today, chp will quadruple the number of patrols in oakland and the surrounding area. may remember, during a news conference last week, governor gavin newsom talked about the boost it's been for crime fighting efforts that program is being extended for at least the next four months. since february, chp has helped make 562 arrests, along with the seizure of dozens of guns and the recovery of nearly 1200 stolen cars. and you know what? it has been nice while it lasted. but, you know, for the first time in months, parts of california now back in those drought conditions,

meteorologist kari hall of course, been monitoring all that. and with that record breaking heat that we saw last week that's been accelerating this. all right. yeah it's been really drying things out across the region. and this is not the bay area we're talking about here. but we have seen some the extension of the very dry conditions because of the high heat. and it's affecting northeastern corner of california, mostly in siskiyou county, which is now in the moderate stage of drought. and it marks the end of that nine month drought free period that we had in california. the longest such stretch since 2011. so taking a look at our map here across the region, it is really the pacific northwest that's starting to see the beginnings of more drought conditions. and that once again extends into that northeastern corner corner of california. we are seeing abnormally dry conditions here, which is not quite a drought. that means that the wildfire season may be extended a little bit. we may see drier than

normal vegetation, but overall we are not yet under a drought. we typically don't see our drought status changing in the summer because we don't typically get a lot of rain. so we'll be watching that as we start out this morning with a lot of sunshine. it will be a cooler day. we'll be tracking this and looking ahead to warmer temperatures by the end of the week. coming up, mike, you're still tracking that crash on the bay bridge i am on the incline, although things moved a bit and in fact maybe there's more movement. oh, it just moved. just moved a few seconds ago. let's see if we can catch the crew. it looks like all crews have cleared from that westbound. so you're the first to see this on the incline. everything has cleared from the earlier crash on the bay bridge. and that should start to improve things at the toll plaza. we were seeing a backup and slowing in the hov lanes as well. and a build off the berkeley curve. so this should start to improve, but not quickly. they got to slow things down for the metering as well. on the span. we're looking over here. both directions still slow away from pleasanton for 680 northbound. still slow toward bernal again i think it's moving some equipment

from overnight work. south bay just mild slowing for one on one. but there is a build and it will see some slowing for 87 again. and nothing on the peninsula. no problems there. back to you guys. all right. thank you mike. we want to continue our coverage of that assassination attempt in pennsylvania. and the questions about the shooting that remain unanswered, starting with how the gunman managed to get such a clear sight line of the former president today in the bay's jay gray is live this morning in butler, pennsylvania, at the site of that rally. we see the fencing there behind you. jay, what do we know at this point that we didn't know yesterday? yeah yeah. and chris, this area is still locked down. still a crime scene. what we do know is that the suspected shooter, 20 year old thomas matthew crooks, apparently fired at least eight shots from a rooftop before he was taken out by secret service snipers. nbc news also learning from two sources that the rooftop where that gunman shot at former president donald trump

during the rally was identified by the secret service during a sweep in the days ahead of this rally as a potential security issue, that it could be a vulnerability there. we do have video showing the suspected shooter taking his position on the roof in butler. the fbi investigating the assassination attempt as an act of domestic terrorism. although motive still unclear at this point. capitol police have released a statement saying it's been operating in a, quote, heightened environment for several months following threats on members of congress calling the assassination attempt in part, quote, a tragedy of historic proportions. so trying to put that into perspective and back to crooks, a cell phone and other electronics that were his are now in the possession of the fbi, and they're actually being analyzed at their quantico crime lab while we speak right now,

investigators hoping they can get some kind of clarity on who exactly he was and what may have led him to allegedly want to kill the former president. so it's amazing that as a 20 year old, he really didn't have much of a social media footprint. so that will be interesting ahead. also, you know, the republican national convention is starting in milwaukee. do you know anything about the security ahead of that event? yeah, it's interesting because as late as yesterday, we heard from the secret service on the ground there who said they've been working on a plan for the better part of 18 months, that they feel like they have a strong security plan in place, and they don't anticipate changing that much. kris that that they are confident with their security plan and that things will be safe in milwaukee. the biggest change we may see, actually, during this convention could come from the stage, and the

gates ahead of the copa america final. the new video shows some of last night's chaos outside the hard rock stadium. that's where colombia faced off against argentina, and police say about a dozen people were arrested. the start of the game was delayed for nearly 90 minutes before the game. fans climbed fences, even scaled air vents to try to get in. other people dashed past police and over stadium railings, and a handful of them had to receive medical treatment for a time, security actually opened the gates because they were trying to

avoid a stampede. eventually, all trespassers were pushed back behind the entry gates. we will show you highlights of the actual game that happened 90 minutes late in the next half hour or right now. the. despite the chaos, argentina now still celebrating a thrilling finish about 60 minutes into the game, star lionel messi had to leave with a really swollen ankle. colombia and argentina at that point were still locked in a scoreless tie, but then in the 112th minute in extra time, you hear that goal. argentina finally broke through. they win the game one nil, capturing their 16th copa america title. fans of buenos aires still celebrating, checking out the reaction from last night outside one bar that is the moment when argentina scored that winning goal. it is fair to call argentina a dynasty because they won the 2022 cup after winning the last copa america, which happened during the pandemic in 2021. new at six e-bikes reportedly getting the green

light from the u.s. forest service, at least when it comes to parts of the forest land in the tahoe basin. the chronicle is reporting that authorities will open more than 100 miles of trails to electric bikes, including 45 miles of new trails. until now, e-bikes have been banned on all trails because they're motorized. it's believed to be the first case of a national forest approving such a change. all right, chris, let's talk about something. okay food. i know you like we love food. i like it we're foodies. right. okay, so i was actually able to go to the new home of an oakland food staple, which closed five months ago, closed its doors. there was a big shock to a lot of people after 20 years in that location. well, i'm talking about the restaurant home of chicken and waffles. i was actually able to catch up with the owner, derek johnson, to talk about the move and those changes. so, derek, talk to me. i mean, this is a huge staple not only in the oakland but really in the bay area. i heard people in san jose talking about it when i first moved here, talk

to me about why did you all decide to move? oh, well, first of all, how are you doing? but we decided to move after 20 years, just relocate to it, get a fresh start. also, that we had the opportunity to purchase this, space. and so it's very important for us to have ownership. now, after 20 years of paying rent, it's time to time to own something. and i think all black businesses, businesses, period, but especially those in our community, african american community, we would just do much better and prosper more if we just owned the spaces that we're in. and i want to talk to you about that because what we are seeing, not only in oakland but across the bay area, a lot of businesses are leaving, pulling out because of the crime, and it's really hitting businesses hard. but you've decided not only to move to a location but plant your roots, even deeper in the community. why was it so important to do that? and how are you all dealing with the crime in the city? well, i'm rooted in oakland. me. i'm born and raised in oakland. i'm third generation. i have five generations. my grandmother just turned 100, so everything i know is oakland, so i it was never a question. would i ever leave the

city, crime has, as we know in oakland has has been bad, but it is getting better. the car break ins are down, so we're not seeing glass all over the streets like we used to. and it's just very important to me to keep my business in a community that's supported. oakland has built my business, and my employees all live in oakland. most of them are from oakland. majority of them are. so it's very important to me to stay home. okay. what you will notice different location, but it is the same good old food and very welcoming vibe there. it's kind of like home, right? i can't hear you because of that. yeah, i want to make it. what? what did you say? my stomach rumbling. but you know what else is pretty cool here? they actually have a wine program. so what they've been able to do is get someone to come in and pair wines with certain foods. there on the menu. we're talking about the collard greens, the candied yams, the mac and cheese you see there. the red beans look, all of that is going to be paired with wine club. now, if you want to go to the new location, it's not far from the old one. this was at 2.47 fourth street, very close to that former location over in jack london square.

those hours, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day except for wednesday. and they don't open on wednesday. well, they are open on wednesday, but they're not operating on wednesday because what he's been able to do is open every wednesday to a chef that doesn't have a restaurant to work in, so therefore they can generate business, hopefully be able to open their own restaurant, creating another business within oakland itself. so the incubator, yeah, it really is. and so he's doing that. and so we'll see what happens after that. but it's oh, and also you need to make reservations. now this place isn't as big as the other one. but you know, they give you 90 minutes to eat and drink if you like. so go full bars. you can do to go orders as well. so it's back open home of chicken and waffles in oakland. if we name drop you, we'll get reservation. of course. derek telemachus washington sent you. yeah. and then they go, like who? oh, no. denzel washington. who did you say? that's awesome, they have an outside patio. i hear they

do. which would be lovely today. great to go out there today. yeah, go ahead and make those reservations for us, marcus. we're going to have a great day. nice cool weather. and it's been great to have this break in that extreme heat that we had last week. and our air quality is improving too. we've had quite a few fires burning across the region, but for the bay area at least for most of our inland areas, the air quality is good for the coast and the bay. it will be moderate. there may be some hints of smoke coming in at times, but overall, once again things are improving here with our temperatures dropping and we are seeing more of a westerly wind picking up today that's bringing in that cool ocean air and also helping out the bay area with some morning clouds. look at our highs for today mid 60s in san francisco and in novato. it will be 80 degrees 73 in oakland today. i mean these numbers are really nice for this time of year, up to 80 in fremont, in mountain view, in the upper 70s. there will be some warm spots like morgan hil, livermore in the upper 80s. but

we're going to bring down some of those numbers even more for tomorrow. but then wednesday it starts to creep back up a little bit. and you know what that means ahead, there will be a warming trend. all of this as high pressure that's been moving away from the bay area starts to come back a little bit. that's going to heat up those temperatures, kind of fight back that ocean breeze that keeps us cool. and also as high pressure causes the air to sink, it also warms up as it does so. so take a look at san jose, our trend throughout the week. going from low 80s to mid 80s by thursday and then peaking at 90 degrees. so even though we've been talking a lot about a warm up, at least we're not talking about upper 90s or triple digits here. even looking ahead, it will be warming up for the middle of next week. but at this point, it doesn't look like it's going to be all that extreme. and for a lot of our inland areas, we'll see temperatures in the low to mid 90s by the end of the week. and mike, you're focus on the tri-valley. yeah. carry because you look at the map and the peninsula clear south bay

typical patterns. and we're looking at unusual slowing for 680 which continues the southbound side. although the crash cleared from lanes there's still three possibly four vehicles on scene. they have to be towed away from the earlier crash. so that's why adding to the slowdown of the build for your southbound commute. meanwhile, northbound still slows past for now, where there's still an overnight construction zone. still blocking at least one lane and chp presence on scene causes folks to slow down a little extra as well. so that's what seems to be going on. the rest of the bay moving pretty smoothly. the bay bridge is recovering from the earlier crash. hov, now an advantage. back to you. thank you mike. happening now. crews are mopping up an overnight fire at a home in sausalito. this happened just before 230 this morning along atwood avenue near southview park, marin. firefighters say that when they arrived, they did not find any flames. however, they did see several lithium batteries on the ground smoldering in the garage. no one was hurt. we'll
