president trump, greeted by an adoring crowd at the republican national convention. we will take you to the convention floor. also mr. trump has a new

running mate with deep ties to the bay area. j.d. vance and his wife have strong connections to silicon valley's campaign cash, plus. i've been doing this a long time. the idea that i'm the old guy i am, i'm old, but i'm only three years older than trump. lester holt's exclusive interview with president biden, his response to the assassination attempt over the weekend, and the presidential race. what it looks like moving forward. good evening. thanks for joining us for the special primetime edition of nbc bay area news. i'm jessica aguirre, and i'm raj mathai. a reflective and dynamic night in american politics. former president trump, now officially the republican nominee for presiden. he made his first public appearance after the assassination attempt over the weekend. please welcome the next president of the united states,
9:02 pm
donald j. trump the crowd. excuse me. the crowd on their feet and erupting in cheers as mr. trump walked in. he was not scheduled to make an appearance, but there he was with the bandage on his right ear. you can see that he listened to various speakers as he sat with his family of ultimately mr. trump will make a speech later this week. mr. trump's vice presidential pick, jd vance, also in attendance tonight, he sat next to the former president during the convention. speakers tonight included a rapper and influencer, amber rose, and san francisco venture capitalist david saks. president biden in the meantime, also on the move this evening, he kicked off a two day campaign swing through nevada. there he was in las vegas earlier in the day. he was back at the white house, where he spoke to nbc's lester holt in a highly anticipated interview. and the reason i asked, because i guess the question is, are you all on the same page? are you seeing what they saw? which was
9:03 pm
moments of, frankly, of that appeared to be you appeared to be confused. lester. look why don't you guys ever talk about the 18 to 28 lies he told? where are you on this? why didn't the press ever talk about that 28 times? it's confirmed he lied in that debate. i had a bad, bad night. i wasn't feeling well at all. and i had been without making. i screwed up. we have team coverage of the republican convention and an exclusive interview with the president. we start with nbc's alice barr from milwaukee. reporter good evening, raj and jessica. well, the arena erupted into cheers when former president trump came out, making his first appearance since surviving that horrific assassination attempt against him. his ear was bandaged. he walked up not far behind me, came up on the stairs, waved to the audience here. and then he went and sat with his family and
9:04 pm
with his newly announced running mate, ohio senator jd vance. for the third time in less than a decade, donald j. trump is officially the republican nominee for president, making a surprise appearance on the first night of the party's national convention in milwaukee. having survived an assassination attempt just two days earlier, the former president trump and the party celebrating his newly announced running mate, ohio senator jd vance, the 39 year old first term senator who is half mr. trump's age, rose to prominence with his 2016 memoir, hillbilly elegy, focused on growing up in rural poverty. the one time trump critic, now a fierce ally and staunch advocate for hard line positions on abortion and attacking the legitimacy of the 2020 election. delegates cheering on their new ticket, galvanized by the former
9:05 pm
president's fist pump and vow to fight following the horrific attempt on his life, the devil came to pennsylvania holding a rifle. but an american lion got back up on his feet and he roared. former president trump is now reportedly rewriting his thursday night acceptance speech to focus on unity. president biden pressing for the same in an exclusive interview with nbc's lester holt. there's no place at all for violence in politics in america. none zero. both candidates, looking ahead as a 2024 campaign like no other enters a new stage. this has been a far more eventful first day to this convention here in milwaukee. then typically the first days are for these things and going back to the selection of ohio senator jd vance for the running mate for former president trump, this really is
9:06 pm
a choice that leans fully into the maga base this time around. and the ohio senator has positioned himself as someone who can carry the torch for future generations, and someone who can really fight for those midwest voters who will be so decisive in this election. in milwaukee, i'm alice barr, raj. and jessica, back to you. alice. thank you. certainly. political strategy. more from our exclusive interview now with the president, which covered many topics among them the attempted assassination, the debate, and of course, j.d. vance. here's an unedited clip i want to ask you about, just shortly before you and i sat down, former president trump named his vice presidential pick, j.d. vance. what does that tell you? his qualities. what does that tell you about, former president trump's values? and in terms of who he will surround himself with in a next administration, should he win? well, it's not unusual. he's going to surround himself with people who agree with completely with him, have a
9:07 pm
voting record. i support him, even though if you go back and listen to j.d. vance said about trump, well, he said some things about you. yeah, i know he says something about me, but see what he said about trump? what's with you guys? come on, man, look, the point i'm making is that j.d. vance has has adopted the same policies, no exceptions on abortion making sure that he supports the new $5 trillion tax cut that trump wants to give in the next administration. signing on to the whole notion of whether or not we're going to there's he says, there's no climate change. it's happening. i mean, he signed on to the trump agenda, which he should if he's running with trump. mr. trump has said he's giving you a chance to redeem yourself. basically, the idea of engaging in another debate. you are going to have another debate. yeah. you're going to have one in september that's on the books. would you be open to doing one in, you know, in the next few weeks i'm going to debate him when we agreed to debate, and i'm going to debate him in
9:08 pm
september. but if the opportunity came up to do one between now and then, is there, is there a sense of wanting to get back on the horse? i'm on the horse. where have you been? i've done 22 major events, met thousands of people, overwhelming crowds, a lot happening. i'm on the horse. what i'm doing is going out and demonstrating to the american people that i have command of all my faculties, that i don't need notes, i don't need teleprompters. i can go out and answer any questions at all. and i stood there when nato was in town, i stood there for an hour and answered questions. if you were to have continue to run and be officially nominated, what happens if you have another episode like we saw during the debate? what happens then? yeah what happens? what happens if you have another performance on that par that on that level? i don't plan on having another
9:09 pm
performance on that level. let's bring in our political analyst, larry gerston. fascinating. just to watch that and that was just a clip. it went on for about 30 minutes. president biden in a challenging spot here. clearly he's playing offense. at least he did in this interview tonight. at times annoyed with lester holt. should he be playing offense right now in the wake of just what happened, the attempted assassination on saturday? i think so, i mean, you know, he's got to move forward. he's acknowledged the attempt. he talked to former president trump. look, as he said he's on the horse. and clearly he had the reins right in his hands tonight. what happens with president former president trump now pretty symbolic to see it. he didn't say a word but it spoke volumes. being by him arriving and showing up and getting all the cheers at the rnc in milwaukee, it was dramatic. and in fact, the way they saw him walking out of that hall like a boxer coming out to the main event or world world wrestling, that's what it looked like. and to see that, of course, he got a great applause because he wasn't expected there. sitting with jd vance. that was another great shot.
9:10 pm
there's no doubt about it that the republicans are organized tonight. they know what they want to do. they're moving forward. and i'll tell you, the democrats have their hands full. and this is what should happen during a convention. everyone is supposed to be unified and the optics are supposed to look like this. so the rnc doing what the game plan is. yeah, the democrats should take a good a good note from this because right now of course, they look anything but organized. and they've got just a few weeks to get themselves together for their convention. less than five weeks. are we done with president biden here? president biden dropping out of this race or in a few weeks? is this going to be an issue again? here's what the president said. hold on. who do you listen to on deeply personal issues, like the decisions whether to stay in the race or not? me look, i've been doing this a long time. the idea that i'm the old guy, i am, i'm old, but i'm only three years older than trump. number one. and number two, my mental acuity
9:11 pm
has been pretty good. i've gotten more done than any president has in a long, long time in three and a half years. so i'm willing to be judged on that. i understand a bit of anger here towards some of the own people in his own party who haven't necessarily stepped up and said, he's our guy. yeah. he feels i think he feels a little disappointed. but the interesting thing about him, raj is that he's running. he's running. but you know what happens when you see a person of his stature running? you're running until you're not. yeah. and we don't know whether you're not is ever going to come. it could come next week. but right now he's doing everything he can to say i am in command. a bit of a chip on his shoulder, some defiance and a lot of animation from somebody we haven't seen in a long time. he's running until he's not a lot of big money as we wrap up. a lot of big money support for mr. trump and senator jd vance from the bay area. is the tech community changing colors a bit and going more conservative now? there's some big money coming out of right here. we have seen a
9:12 pm
number of democrats in this area just unhappy, unhappy with president biden staying in the race, unhappy with a lot of things. and yes, vance has ties here. he's in venture capital. he had a tech operation for a while. so he's he's you know, adding to those, adding to the coffers, so to speak, by going to these people, there's no doubt about it that he comes with some really good assets. trump was wise to choose him for all these reasons. his age, the fact that he lives in a border state, michigan, pennsylvania, right nearby, his background in tech. this is something the democrats have to think long and hard about how they're going to beat that. and the first thing they have to do, the first thing, is to make sure they know who they're nominating. that's it. larry, thank you jessica. all right. let's talk a little bit more about trump's running mate. as you heard larry say. and raj they have he has ties to the bay area and especially to silicon valley. vance and his wife lived and worked here. now prior to his time in the senate. the republican vp nominee spent a couple of years in san francisco working alongside well-known venture capitalist peter thiel and marc anderson,
9:13 pm
as well as tech executives like eric schmidt of google and steve case of aol. vance's wife, osha chilukuri vance, also has ties to san francisco, up until today, she was actually a corporate litigator at munger, tolles and olson, which has offices in san francisco as well as los angeles and washington, d.c. let's take a live look now in milwaukee at the republican national convention. you see the arena there just after 11 p.m. milwaukee time. we'll be following the week's events throughout the week until this ends on thursday. we'll be covering it in prime time here on nbc. up next, laci peterson's mother has something to say about scott peterson's bid for a new trial. her message to the court today. also good news for patelco customers they can now access their money after hackers breached the bank's system. we're back in a moment. i'm chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. that fog is back for tomorrow morning. i'll show you the impact to our temperatures l

lorenzo was reported missing friday and sadly, she's been found dead. her body was found at a san jose recycling center over the weekend, but police and the coroner only confirmed her identity today. nbc's damian trujillo spent the weekend making calls on this case. he's in san jose tonight with the new details. the child's body was found here at the green waste recycling plant on charles street, in an industrial part of san jose. and right now, police still have a lot of questions about what exactly happened here. ellie loved dancing and meeting new people. she so easily made friends and spread so much joy everywhere she went. that's what ellie, lorenzo's mother, wrote when describing her daughter on saturday. three year old ellie's body was found at this san jose recycling plan,
9:17 pm
one day after her father was found dead by apparent suicide in san francisco. with any child, death or homicide, detectives will conduct the investigation. in this case, we don't know for sure that it was a homicide. however, i think basic circumstances finding a three year old juvenile who is deceased at a recycling facility would point toward that direction. ellie's family has asked for privacy during this time, and we are respecting those wishes. ellie's family lived in fremont, but police say it is unclear where or how the child was killed, and that adds another challenge to an already difficult investigation, as authorities try to determine who handles the homicide case right now, san jose is taking the lead. we don't really have a motive. the circumstances are still trying to be figured out and investigated. and once we know where this happened and if there is a jurisdictional issue, i'm sure we will work just fine with our neighboring agencies on determining how to best investigate the incident. the trucks continued their daily routine at the recycling center where ellie's body was found. yeah, i mean, my heart feels for
9:18 pm
the child. one man who lives near the center says he can't believe what happened. i was saddened, surprised to hear about about the little girl that was found, you know, and heard about her father, too. so it was pretty sad about what happened. as police investigate the words in her mother's statement underlined the pain of a family trying to process an unspeakable crime. ellie's life was full of so many people who loved her so much, her mother wrote. we will miss her beyond words. damian trujillo, nbc, bay area news. attorneys for convicted murderer scott peterson were back in a redwood city courtroom today, continuing their fight for a new trial for peterson. in 2004. he was convicted of murdering his pregnant wife, laci, and their unborn son, connor, and dumping their bodies in the bay. peterson was sentenced to death, but that sentence was overturned four years ago and replaced with a life sentence. now, a group called the southern california innocence project wants the court to overturn that guilty
9:19 pm
verdict, saying they believe that someone else killed laci and may. they asked the judge to test or retest evidence that was gathered during the original trial. the judge overseeing the case ruled that only one of those pieces of evidence, a piece of duct tape found on laci peterson's body, should be retested. today, both sides agreed on a third party lab to do that testing. a victim impact statement written by laci's mom, sharon rocha, was also read aloud in court today, arguing the judge should deny peterson's request for a new trial. it read in part, we endure the pain of reliving laci's murder, ripping the scab from the wound with each attempt he makes for freedom. why is he allowed to pursue having his conviction overturned time after time with evidence? other courts have already denied? this is not justice for laci and connor. he is guilty of murdering them. when will this end? patelco customers can once again bank online, but as the financial institution continues to recover from that massive cyber attack,
9:20 pm
customers are being warned to brace for long wait times at the call centers and branches. the dublin based credit union was hit by a ransomware attack two weeks ago. today. you can see the line out the door there, one of the local locations. last week, some core functions came back online, allowing payments to be processed. however, members still were not able to see their balance or access money to pay bills. those services were finally restored today. i mean, obviously we're out here standing and we don't know, like how long this is going to be for. how long is the line going to be for we i had plans, and i don't there's so many uncertainties. yeah unnerving and frustrating to say the least. some functions are still limited or unavailable, including electronic statements, opening new accounts and approval for new loans. all right, let's bring in our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. boy, what a change. this monday brought. oh, man. huge. you know, this time last week we
9:21 pm
were looking ahead towards 110 degree temperatures, as we head into tomorrow's forecast, temperatures actually below average. let's go ahead and roll it into those current temperatures right now. i'm sure you felt it today. and you're feeling it tonight with those air conditioners getting a break. currently, because of that fog at the coastline, we have 50s and 60s here across the bay area chilliest in san francisco with 55 concord. not too bad at 65, and livermore right here at 63. now, i'm confident as we head through tomorrow, we're going to continue with some gorgeous weather moving on in from this smaller system just off to the north. it's going to keep some fog at the coastline, but most importantly for right now, going to keep any kind of hot weather, pushed off towards the south. now we will get into some heat later on this week. i'll show you those details coming up in that 7-day forecast. but as far as tomorrow morning goes, pretty typical here for july. we have some widespread fog chances and a little bit of drizzle near san francisco. most of this would clear back pretty quickly and we're into a lot of sunshine for
9:22 pm
tomorrow. away from the coastline. so morning temperatures if you're up early 5 or 6:00, you're probably going to need a jacket. we have widespread 50s coming back with that cool breeze that's going to set you off here. with 57 in the south bay, 55 in the tri valley, san francisco down to 56, and for the east bay 58. as we move through the afternoon, it's going to get warm inland, but i don't think it's going to be uncomfortable. we should be able to manage with this just fine. again, a lot of temperatures near average to just below that will put you to 80 here in san jose. let's take it to the east bay. 75, hayward 79, martinez 83. in pleasanton at the coastline 63. half moon bay, redwood city 73, san francisco 66. in the outer sunset and 69 right here in the mission. up across the north bay. 78 in santa rosa, 79 napa, and only 69 in mill valley. on my 7-day forecast, we start to warm it up in san francisco by friday, saturday, and sunday 70s will return. the change through the inland valley is going to be a
9:23 pm
lot larger here. once we get to friday's forecast, we will go from 85 tomorrow to 97. but notice it doesn't last too long. by this weekend we should go to low 90s. we'd be up to 98 next monday. right now it doesn't look like we'd get into a major heat wave next week, but we are keeping a close eye on it and it's just been so gorgeous. look at that sunset back here behind us. it looks gorgeous right now. oh my gosh. thanks chef. well the road to paris speaking of gorgeous goes through abu dhabi for team usa basketball. yep steph curry and the guys getting a little stress tests before the ympics beginol
