several groups there over the next two days, including addressing the naacp national convention. let's turn now to the investigation into the assassination attempt on donald trump. we are learning more about the shooter, his background and his familiarity with firearms. nbc's stephanie gosk has the latest. >> reporter: grainy video shows the shooter, thomas crooks, moments before he fired a ar-style rifle at donald trump. he did not go unnoticed. >> he's on the roof! >> reporter: according to two senior officials, loke police officers saw crooks on the rooftop but couldn't stop him before he opened fire, injuring former president trump. 50-year-old corey comperatore was killed. david dutch and james copenhaver were critically wounded before a sniper shot and killed crooks. among the questions, how did the 20-year-old get on the rooftop, and why wasn't it better

secured? he had a vantage point just 148 yards from the podium where trump was speaking. snipers took up positions nearby, but the secret service says the rooftop was outside their security perimeter. crooks' father has been cooperating with the investigation and legally purchased the rifle his son used. crooks purchased ammunition at this store near his home hours before the rally. senior officials say nearly a dozen firearms were found while searching the family's home. after the shooting, his father called police, worried his son and a ar-style rifle were missing. crooks graduated from community college and worked as a dietary aide at a nursing home. >> he was just a normal kid to me, walking around the neighborhood. i mean, he was just a bit odd. that's all. >> reporter: but authorities still have not identified a mote

i motive. while the small town of butler struggles with what happened here. >> right now it's the feeling of numbness in the city. >> reporter: the fbi has conducted over a hundred interviews and continues to pore over the shooter's electronic devices and is looking at photos and videos from saturday's rally and calling on the public to come forward if you have any information that could be helpful. >> stephanie, thank you. another legal win for the former president. the judge in his florida classified documents trial has dismissed the case. judge aileen cannon saying the appointment and funding of special counsel jack smith was unlawful. trump had pleaded not guilty for keeping boxes with classified documents at his mar-a-lago estate and obstructing efforts to get them back. he called for the remaining cases against him to be dropped. the special counsel's office has

indicated it will appeal. ukrainian president zelenskyy is planning a peace summit in november. it could be the followup to a summit held in switzerland last month. zelenskyy said monday he is preparing all the necessary elements for a peace plan and urged russia to attend. but a kremlin official said that no russian representatives would be present. for the latest, let's go to danielle, do we know any details of zelenskyy's peace plan? >> reporter: well, good morning to you, and those remarks by volodymyr zelenskyy coming on the heels of that summit in washington last week. the first summit tackled three of ten points that are part of this peace formula. they focussed on food security, nuclear safety and the release of prisoners of war and children. now ukrainian officials have said the second summit to be held in november would discuss a plan devised in advance by dozens of countries, split in various groups.

zelenskyy has said that the first meeting would be held in qatar at the end of july, early august, and would focus on the energy security. the second meeting would be held in turkey and would tackle the issue of food security, and finally, canada would host a meeting in september, and on the agenda there would be prisoners of war and children. the american position on this is that decisions on peace talks are up to ukraine, when ukraine is ready. but that it's never been clear that the kremlin is ready for actual diplomacy. on the russian side, last week, a deputy foreign minister said moscow would not attend the followup summit in november. but, as is often the case, what is stated by individual politicians doesn't always reflect the actual government position, and so the kremlin has been left category calan said t

there was no substance for another summit. a lot can happen until then. >> thank you, danielle. school districts in california are no longer required to tell parents if their child changes pronouns. democratic governor gavin newsom signed the bill into law yesterday, making california the first state to make such a move. a spokesperson for newsom says this law helps keep children safe while protecting the critical role of parents. teachers and staff are no longer allowed to disclose information about a child's gender identity and sexual orientation to anyone without the child's consent. a daughter and father died while hiking in utah. the 23-year-old daughter texted authorities in the afternoon. the two were lost and had run out of water, with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees. the search and rescue helicopter crew responded. and after hours of searching, they found the pair dead. rescuers say they were on the

most challenging trail in the region. and that dangerous heat continues in much of the country, along with a threat of severe storms. nbc meteorologist bill karins is tracking it all for us. good morning. it doesn't seem like there's going to be any break. and hopefully, we'll get one. >> yeah, this was a very dangerous evening yesterday. at one point, chicago o'hare airport was reporting a large tornado. they evacuated the control tower. everyone went to the tornado shelters, and, you know, there's still about half a million people without power in northern illinois, coming out of iowa and in western portions of indiana from this likely derecho that went through. it is of long duration, about 250 miles worth of severe wind. fl now now we're watching that fal apart. a few storms in detroit and central illinois. as far as severe weather from today, nebraska to kansas and
