insider is live in milwaukee, breaking it all down from inside the rnc. plus breaking news, a traffic alert this morning out of the east bay, a jackknife big rig causing some trouble for that morning commute. we're tracking the impact and the alternate routes you can take. this is today in the bay good morning to you on this tuesday. thanks for joining us on marcus washington. and i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia is off. we want to get right to mike inouye because there's something happening in the east bay that might. it's been continuing. northbound 680 has been closed ever since this double big rig crash happened just north of livorna road. i'm kind of zoomed in, but if you know the area heading up into walnut creek out of alamo, you know this stretch livorno road is where folks are forced off the freeway and have to get over here. many are taking danville boulevard. that's why we've seen these slow sensors. we're crawling. look at that. speeds below or at ten miles per hour traveling north. now, some of that traffic is
6:02 am
lightened up because there's another crash in the backup traveling north at stone valley road. crash that i have very little detail about, but it is slowing more traffic. folks are also getting off of stone valley, adding to danville boulevard as well to avoid the area. if you're traveling north, you can take 580 in through castro valley. then back up, then to the warren freeway and back around. that adds a lot of mileage for folks driving in the morning again. north 680 bob redell has just arrived on scene. bob, what can you tell u? good morning to you, mike. yes, the jackknifed big rig is still blocking northbound lanes and shut down northbound 680 here at lisbon. i just spoke with chp. they've already got the cab removed from the trailer. so now they're trying to remove the trailer. chp said, quote, it'll be a 45 minutes, but it will be sooner than that. so it should be open soon. let's see at 6:00. so we're talking before 7:00. they expect it to be reopened. it looks like the big rig hit a
6:03 am
sign alongside the road before it. jackknife, so the good news is, there isn't much of a mess here. not a big scene in terms of cleanup. i do see maybe some fuel on the road, but it doesn't look like this is going to require a big cleanup on behalf of caltrans. so the bottom line is this should be reopening shortly. you know, like i said, chp said within 45 minutes. and he said kind of a wink and a nod, but it will be before that. mike all right. we'll take it from here. bob. thank you so much for that update. we do have some news to tell you about this morning. maybe you felt it overnight. this is an earthquake that we felt this was in the south bay, a 3.2 near san felipe lake around 140 this morning. yeah, that was right off of 152 near gilroy. now, there was a second, a 3.4 that came in just minutes later. so far, there are no reports of any damage or injuries. of course, we'll keep monitoring that and bring you any updates on changes once they

come in. all right. let's get a look at what's happening weather wise for you here. meteorologist kari hall of course. been tracking the temperatures for us. and it's been very pleasant for us. kari. it has. it's been comfortable, especially compared to the high heat that we had last week. today we're starting out with some clouds, but that keeps our temperatures from warming up quickly. and the clouds will be clearing out by 9:00. we're in the mid 60s then, and then going to see our high temperatures, mostly in the upper 70s today as we get a light wind and a lot of sunshine, it's going to be a beautiful day. we're up to 81in martinez and 79 in novato, san francisco. today we'll reach a high of the upper 60s. we'll take a look to some warmer weather by the end of the week. coming up in a few minutes. chris. thank you. kari. turning now to decision 2024. and all eyes are on milwaukee as the republican national convention enters day two. this is a live look at the venue there. our former president donald trump made a surprise appearance following this weekend's assassination attempt in

pennsylvania. now, the other big headline we now know who will run with trump in november. the now official gop nominee selecting ohio senator jd vance as his running mate today in the bay's brie jackson, joins us live from milwaukee with more on this big announcement. and bree, this was a really tight kept secret. but in the end, maybe not so much of a surprise. that's right. good morning chris. you're right. there were several surprises here at the republican national convention on the first day. j.d. vance being named the vice presidential pick for former president trump, was one of them, but his name had been floated around even before the convention started. j.d. vance is a us senator. he's from ohio, and he's probably best known for his best selling memoir, hillbilly elegy. and he was once a sharp critic of former president trump. and now he's become one of his biggest allies. jd ohio senator jd vance

receiving a warm welcome at the republican national convention after being named former president trump's 2024 running mate. the 39 year old says he brings loyalty to the ticket. the president can't be everywhere. even donald trump can't be everywhere. so you've got to be a person he can trust, he can rely on to actually advance the agenda. the first term senator was a trump critic in 2016, but since then he's changed his position and has been by the former president's side for court cases and campaign events. vance's addition to the republican ticket comes just two days after a gunman fired at trump, injuring his ear. my first reaction was just to pray for him, you know, i was terrified, former president trump surprising the crowds at the convention and making his first public appearance since the assassination attempt. on the same day, trump officially

secured the gop nomination, president biden sat down with nbc's lester holt, calling it a mistake to have used the term bull's eye when discussing his political opponent. i mean, focus on him, focus on what he's doing, focus on one on his policies. president biden also weighing in on trump's vp pick a clone of trump on the issue. so i don't see any difference. there's got to go. protesters outside the republican national convention are speaking out against the gop's agenda. americans remain divided over issues like abortion and the country's future, with vance's name added to the gop ticket, voters now have a clearer picture of their choices this november. and if elected, jd vance would become the third youngest vice president in u.s. history. kris brie i understand
6:08 am
even jd vance himself didn't know he was going to be the vice presidential pick until the last minute. yeah. so sources tell nbc news that former president trump informed j.d. vance that he was going to be his vice presidential pick about 20 minutes before the announcement was made on social media, so he did not get much of a heads up. so just imagine getting that phone call. and then 20 minutes later, the rest of the world found out. well, you know, they're all vetted beforehand, but, you know, yeah, it's kind of how odd to keep i mean, surprising that anybody could keep a secret this day and age with social media. thank you. brie. in just a few minutes, scott mcgrew is going to break down j.d. vance's deep connections to silicon valley and coverage of the rnc continues on the today show. savannah guthrie is live in milwaukee as former president trump prepares to accept his party's nomination this week. she is also following the latest on the investigation into that assassination attempt. that's all ahead at 7:00, right after

today in the bay new at six, pleasanton police are warning pet owners about a recent spike in coyotes killing cats. facebook posting cites the spike over the past several months. that incident occurring mostly at night or early morning hours. everyone is urged to bring those pets indoors overnight. two weeks ago, authorities in san francisco killed three coyotes after one bit. a young girl in golden gate park. she did not suffer major injuries. coyotes commonly avoid people out today, san francisco supervisors will consider a resolution that would put an opioid fighting tool in every pharmacy. this measure calls for drug stores to carry buprenorphine. it is a prescription drug that shows particular promise for fentanyl addicts by reducing their cravings and easing withdrawal symptoms, the federal government recently eased restrictions on those drugs, so if supervisors passed this measure, pharmacies would be penalized for not

carrying sufficient amounts. san francisco supervisors will also vote today on a new development plan for stonestown galleria and the surrounding property. city planners approved that project in may, calling for some 3500 new homes, many of them low income units. it includes a new 19 story apartment tower and six acres of open space. it also calls for new parking structures and could create hundreds of jobs. the development plan involves a partnership with brookfield properties and will require rezoning. well, cleanup is getting underway after severe weather wreaked havoc on chicago. this is one of several places seeing that impact due to the strong line of thunderstorm. now, right now you're looking at dash cam video of that rain. just sending those windshield wipers into overdrive. we know multiple tornadoes were reported in the chicagoland just as last night that storm toppled trees and power lines in that area as
6:11 am
well, leaving thousands of people in the dark. so we also saw video huge limbs falling on cars, you know, toppling down onto the ground and you're tracking all of that. this is some of it's normal for summer in the midwest, but not like this. yeah, it was pretty bad out there. and they had two days of severe weather. so it was just like back to back the tornado warnings and all of that stuff going on. the good news for them is that the storm has cleared the area and is now pushed off towards the south and east. most of the line where we saw a lot of the severe weather has weakened, but we are still getting some strong storms now. moving into the ohio valley this morning, and the threat of severe weather continues for parts of the midwest. we'll be watching that as we're getting out the door this morning in dublin. we're starting out with some cool temperatures, some clouds, and it will eventually clear out here in dublin. it will be at about 8 to 9:00. the rest of the day is sunny and we are looking really nice with temperatures going from upper 50s to mid to upper 70s for today. really comfortable

weather across much of the bay area mostly 70s for the peninsula, while san francisco will be in the upper 60s and a warmest temperatures will be in the mid to upper 80s. we'll take a look ahead. coming up in just where we may have some slowdowns, as well as those gas prices around the bay area. that's right, we have a couple of spots for 680 with big slowdowns, but we'll take you out to the gas prices. there. we go behind us and we have these numbers. i think you're liking what you see in many places. the south bay does have a good spread across santa clara county, mostly san jose, dominating with the best prices, but we'll take 369 and highlight santa clara today. this is platinum gas on washington street. not the best price in the south bay, but that's the best for the city. the tri-valley 399 is the best sunol super stop at andrade road and in san rafael. still the best in marin county. 399 at mobil on ritter street. now that's the only thing under four bucks for that county. for marin county. thank you for sharing those prices on gasbuddy.com. on the roadways, we are looking at the

two slowdowns south 680. there is a crash only blocking the slow lane just about highway 84, but there are four vehicles blocking that fast lane. quite a distraction. and the commute is building. there's a good volume of traffic, although most of our commute spots look clear except for south 680 there and north 680 right here, traveling through alamo, heading past stone valley road with one crash and another crash blocking all of northbound 680 at livorna. so folks might want to use 580 at the bottom of the screen over through castro valley. then back up through oakland to get over toward the area of lafayette and orinda. back to you. thank you mike. from california to hawaii, a group of brave kayakers just completed a daring race across the pacific. next on today in the bay, the team which came out on top for the world's toughest row out. all right, well, what is businessman republican jd vance mean for business? maybe not. what you think the futures this morning. wall street's been in a very good mood for quite

blocking the roadway there. and mike. east bay this morning, you know. well, as far as the speed sensors go, things are still the same. northbound 680 reportedly still blocked. just about lavorgna road. we see the jam up on a danville boulevard as folks are exiting lavorgna. we also see more backup. i think a lot more folks are exiting the freeway. one exit earlier over at stone valley road. now, if you don't want to head up through the area because you're back here near the dublin interchange, you might want to take 580 over through castro valley, then back up through oakland and back around in toward lafayette. i know it's a lot longer, but you can just keep moving now. right now, 680 was reported still blocked by chp, but bob redell is out there. bob, i had hoped lanes would reopen. what do you have, mike? they're about to reopen at any moment. you can see chp with the help of the wreckers. they have removed the two big rigs that were in question just before 4:00 this morning. one big rig was heading northbound here on 680, just north of lavorgna, when an animal crossed

the road. they try to avoid the animal and it ended up jackknifing. a second big rig came along, tried to stop but couldn't and hit that big rig. everyone's fine, but obviously it took some time to get these big rigs out of the way. it's been over, you know, just about 2.5 hours, but they're going to be reopening the road here at any moment. there is some debris. it looks like one of the big rigs. it doesn't look like i can see it did hit a lamppost here. so that's on the side of the road. and so what it looks like you're going to be doing is going to be reopening the far left three lanes, the far right lane at this point will be still shut down. but in terms of having a big impact on the commute, i don't think it will just because you've got all this space right here and this is also reverse commute. so again, they're going to be reopening northbound 680 just south of lavorgna where it's shut down. they should be remote opening it at any moment now reporting live here in alamo on northbound 680 bob redell today in the bay. a little relief there. all right,

over, rubio or burgum? well, that's a good choice for a few reasons. number one, he's in that what we would call a state that borders two really critical states, michigan and pennsylvania. that's very important. those are swing states. the president, the former president needs he's young. he's 39. he's the next generation. he comes with the vc attachments that we're going to talk about in san francisco. money flowing from that, those represent some pretty good opportunities for addition for adding on to a president trump's, portfolio of goodies. so yeah, i think he was a good addition. all right, larry gerston, always good to hear from you. thank you for joining us this morning. meantime, president biden, back on the campaign trail, he's in nevada right now, one of the key states he needs to win, that he did win last time. he'll participate in an economic summit and sit down kris with an interview with bet. all right. thank you very much, scott. well donald trump backers in silicon valley are praising his decision on a running mate today in the bay's ginger

conejero saab live for us in san francisco and ginger, this is where vance once lived. this is also where kamala harris started her political career. so i would imagine surely going to be a talking point if and when those two debate on stage. well, marcus, chris, scott and larry were just talking about how fascinating that debate will be with two very intelligent people there. it'll be interesting to see how they work in their experience and their ties to san francisco and silicon valley. on that debate stage, the biden campaign has already said that vice president harris is ready to meet the new vice presidential pick on the debate stage, and both as mentioned, have bay area ties. now, we are aware of vice president harris's history in san francisco, but we are learning about the many bay area connections to mr. trump's vice presidential pick. vance and his wife lived here for two years, beginning in 2015, and vance signals a lot of republican support in silicon valley. his 2016 new york times best selling autobiography,
6:41 am
hillbilly elegy a memoir of a family and culture in crisis, tells a story of his background, how he was raised by his grandparents in poverty, how he served in the marines, how he graduated from yale law school, and then moved on to silicon valley as a tech investor. that is where he associated with san francisco based venture capitalist david sachs and worked with paypal founder peter thiel. now, both of those gentlemen making an appearance at the gop convention, somebody who lived the american dream of coming up from a really hardscrabble past, and, working his way up to success. he was a vc in the silicon valley, so he understands a lot of our issues there. now, another tie. his wife and the mother of their three children, usha chilukuri, worked for years with a law firm that's headquartered here in san

francisco. she left the firm yesterday. now the firm calling usha, who clerked for chief justice john roberts, an excellent lawyer and colleague. now that autobiography that we spoke about, was turned into a movie. and if you're talking about movies, of course, there are reviews to this. we're still, monitoring the reviews on the new vice presidential pick. but so far as larry said, you know, possibly a strong pick here for the republican, for vice for former president trump. guys, back to you. thank you very much, ginger. well, coverage on the rnc continues on the today show. savannah guthrie is live in milwaukee this morning as former president trump prepares to accept his party's nomination this week. she is also following the latest on that investigation into trump's assassination attempt. it's all coming up for you at 7:00, right after us here on today in the bay. all right, so if you are an ocean swimmer, we have a new warning for you. the recent shark attacks triggering a coastal advisory here near the
