1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning, guys. welcome to "today." it's a tuesday morning. so happy you're joining us. savannah, of course, is in milwaukee. a very busy opening night of the republican national convention. >> we're here in the room where it happened, here in milwaukee. the republican national convention now underway. last night, an emotional moment as former president trump made his first public appearance since the attempt on his life saturday night. you can see his right ear was bandaged. the crowd moved and in rapture as he walked into the convention hall. you see it was a busy first day at the convention. trump has been officially named as the republican nominee. his sons putting it over the top for him. also, he revealed his running mate, ohio senator j.d. vance, a relative newcoming to the world of politics, one time a staunch critic of the former president,

the author of "hillbilly elegy" and much to cover. let's start with hallie jackson here with us in milwaukee. good morning. >> reporter: hey, savannah. good morning to you. from what we could see every person in every chair on this floor was on their feet when the former president walked in, looking emotional, taking it all in in what was the defining moment of the night and maybe the entire convention itself. overnight, republicans roaring at the first glimpse of former president trump in the convention hall. >> donald j. trump. >> reporter: his bandaged ear clearly visible in his unscheduled appearance. the crowd mirroring the moments after saturday's assassination attempt when mr. trump pumped his fist and mouthed the word "fight." the former president for the first time appearing alongside his newly picked running mate, ohio senator j.d. vance. the 39-year-old first-term

senator applauded on the convention floor. the gop ticket now official after the candidates formally received enough delegates to claim the nomination. >> the republican nominee for president of the united states of america. >> reporter: the shadow of the assassination attempt looming. the former president's son eric with savannah. >> do you think your father is reconsidering some of his own rhetoric on the campaign trail? >> probably on both sides. i think everybody's rhetoric needs to change. it does. no one can stop the united states of america if we're together. i think so much of the tone of this whole convention will be exactly that. >> reporter: former president trump says he's now preparing a convention speech that's more unifying as opposed to what he described as an initial rip roar against president biden. on day one of the rnc, the party looking to make inroads with traditionally democratic leaning groups like union workers.

>> it is an honor to be the first teamster in our 121-history to address the republican national convention. >> reporter: and the selection of vance as mr. trump's running mate, a signal the campaign is looking to boost turnout in key battlegrounds. the senator telling fox news the president told me -- >> you need to help me in some of these midwestern states. >> reporter: seen as the next generation of the maga movement. his name already added to the campaign plane. the ticket, of course, official. and the biden campaign is already going after j.d. vance for some of the criticism he leveled at the former president years ago. what a difference eight years makes, of course, as j.d. vance we saw him in the box just behind us last night. >> we will have more on j.d. vance a little later on the show. let's talk about that moment. you and i were sitting here when donald trump made that unannounced visit to the convention hall, something that doesn't always happen. normally the candidate doesn't show up until the final night of the convention.

he walks in. the crowd was emotional. even he appeared emotional two days after that attempt on his life. >> you could see it on his face. it was a departure from his typical defiant posture. and then, of course, that bandage on his ear. he is not known as somebody displaying signs of vulnerability. but you saw that, a stark reminder of what happened on saturday. then he had his family members around him, too. his sons, don jr., appeared emotional as well. not to over-read into it, but it was definitely a huge moment in the hall, savannah. >> it is interesting, too, because donald trump said he tore up the speech he was going to give thursday night in favor of a more unifying message. it does seem at this convention that one of the plans is to kind of make over his image, soften it up a bit to widen his appeal. >> you saw that last night. to a degree. you saw with the teamster's president we talked about. you saw it with celebrity influencer amber rose, who

extended an olive branch to kp communities of color. we know the trump campaign is looking to made inroads with the black community, with the latino community, that typically vote more democratic, savannah. it is clear that the trump campaign wants to try to find new audiences given how close this election is going to be, given how important independence will be. what's also important is they want to turn out audiences, turn out supporters where that support already exists, in the rural areas of key battleground states like michigan, pennsylvania, like wisconsin that are going to be so important come november. >> j.d. vance from ohio they're hoping will speak to those rust belt voters. thank you so much. meanwhile, the investigation into the attempted assassination of president trump is moving forward. new details are emerging about the 20-year-old gunman. we're learning local police officers actually pursued him before those shots rang out. nbc's stephanie gosk joins us with the very latest. good morning. >> reporter: hey, hoda. good morning.

thomas crooks didn't get many rounds off before snipers located him and killed him. were there opportunities missed to stop him before he even got on that rooftop? the building which was just 150 yards from the podium fell outside of their security perimeter and was primarily the responsibility of local law enforcement. this morning, new questions about whether opportunities were missed to stop thomas crooks before he took aim at former president donald trump. >> take a look at what happened -- >> reporter: crooks was shot and killed by secret service snipers after he opened fire with an ar-15 style rifle, just 148 yard from the former president's podium. >> he's on the roof! >> we have people that -- >> right there! right on the roof! >> reporter: nbc news learning crooks was spotted before he got on the roof. rally goers on their way in noticed crooks pacing and behaving strangely near the

metal detectors. according to four officials, they alerted local police, who began pursuing crooks on foot. an official telling nbc news that during the pursuit, the officers told secret service they were looking for a suspicious person in the area. it's not clear when secret service was notified. >> look. there he is, right there. >> reporter: but crooks did make it on to the rooftop. two senior officials telling nbc news he had a home depot receipt for a ladder when they searched his body. officials have not confirmed with the ladder was found on site. nbc news learning two local police officers approached crooks before he opened fire, but couldn't stop him. the head of the secret service telling abc news local police were actually stationed inside that same building. a secret service spokesperson says the location of the roof fell outside of their central security perimeter and was the primary responsibility of local law enforcement.

the department of homeland security, which oversees the u.s. secret service, now conducting a review. the dhs secretary acknowledging mistakes were made. >> when i say that something like this cannot happen, we are speaking of a failure. >> reporter: authorities have said that the shooter acted response to the assassination attempt. although, they were not specific. >> crooks did not have much of a digital footprint police and investigators were saying. alone. now "politico" is reporting that the dhs and fbi have issued a rare joint bulletin warning there could be retaliatory violence by extremists in response to the failed assassination attempt. although, they were not specific about potential targets. >> jeff crooks did not have much of a digital footprint police and investigators were saying. where do they stand on finding a motive? >> reporter: the fbi tell us they have cracked open that cell phone and it has not revealed much in terms of motive. they are still working around the clock, analyzing those electronics. we have also learned from senior officials that when they searched the family home, they found more than a dozen firearms

in the home, hoda. >> stephanie gosk for us in pennsylvania, thank you. sg, over to you. >> yeah. thank you. we turn to that stunning decision in florida. a federal judge throwing out the classified documents case against the former president. the latest major legal victory for mr. trump. it came as something of a surprise even to his lawyers. let's bring in senior legal correspondent, laura jarrett. tell us about this decision. it was one of these kind of hail mary passes that the lawyers made. and this judge ruled for them, and the case is gone for now. >> yeah, savannah. his legal team did not expect to win this. this is the case that posed the greatest legal peril to the former president. even though it wasn't scheduled for trial, they wanted to do anything they could to get it tossed out. the basic reasoning from the judge here is because jack smith was not nominated by the president and confirmed by the senate like any other u.s. attorney across the country, therefore his appointment is invalid.

if his appointment is invalid, everything he did has to be thrown out, the entire indictment has to go away. doesn't mean another u.s. attorney couldn't bring the same case. but for now, this case is wiped out. >> and the justice department has the opportunity to appeal or, for example, probably could bring the case through the normal processes, not the special counsel. how might that play out? as a practical matter, this pushes the day past the november election. if president trump wins re-election, this case is gone. >> yes. the timing here really works in his favor because even if the special counsel appeals this to the 11th circuit, which is the next level after the district court there, this will still take months. there is briefings. there is hearings. if they lose there, they could appeal it up to the supreme court. we're talking about months and months and months of process here, which means this will not get reconciled before november. there still wasn't a trial date here. she's the outlier.

that doesn't mean the u.s. supreme court wouldn't agree with her. we saw a passing remark from justin thomas that tracks what she's saying. we don't know what the supreme court would do with this. >> we'll continue to watch it. thank you. hoda, over to you. president biden is weighing in on that decision, as well as the trump shooting, the 2024 race, and the calls he has faced from fellow democrats to drop out. he sat down yesterday with nbc's lester holt for an interview. our white house correspondent peter alexander joins us with more on what the president had to say. >> reporter: good morning to you. he shared details with his call to former president trump telling the former president how concerned he was about him and said that he and the first lady were praying for him. lester also asked president biden about his comments on a private call with donors last week where he was arguing president trump had gotten too little scrutiny and said it was time to put trump in the bull's-eye.

>> you called your opponent an existential threat on a call a week ago. you said, it is time to put trump in the bull's-eye. there is some dispute about the context. >> i didn't say cross hairs. look, the truth of the matter was and i guess i was talking about at the time was there is very little focus on trump's agenda. >> but the term was "bull's-eye". >> it was a mistake to use the word. i didn't say cross hairs. i meant bull's-eye. i meant focus on him, focus on what he's doing, focus on his policies, focus on the number of lies he told in the debate. >> reporter: the president lamenting how ugly the political climate has become. >> i have never seen a circumstance where you have certain rules in the country, and people have signs, big trump signs saying, f biden, and a little kid standing there

putting up his middle finger. i mean, that's the kind of stuff that is inflammatory and the kind of viciousness. >> reporter: president biden also downplaying democratic defections, those lawmakers in his own party urging him to step aside. >> who do you listen to on deeply personal issues like the decisions whether to stay in the race or not? >> me. look, i have been doing this a long time. the idea that i'm the old guy, i am, i'm old, but i'm only three years older than trump, number one. and number two, my mental acuity has been pretty damn good. i have gotten more done than any president has in a long, long time in three and a half years. >> reporter: before leaving for las vegas yesterday, the president also said that j.d. vance, mr. trump's vp pick, is a, quote, clone of trump on the issues and said he did not see any difference between the two of them. the president, whose campaign

our top story this morning was a jam up on the freeway. but all lanes are now open again on northbound interstate 680. this is after an early morning big rig crash that left traffic at a standstill. it happened just before four this morning on lavorgna on ramp in alamo. it blocked all of those lanes for more than an hour. no one was injured, but it turns out the driver was trying to avoid an animal on the roadway, swerved. and that's how that crash happened. and now i'm ginger conejero saab in san francisco. donald trump, backers in silicon valley are praising his pick for a vice presidential candidate. and senator j.d. vance. that's because the valley is a place where senator vance has deep connection. he moved to silicon valley as a tech investor. that is also where he associated with venture capitalist david saxe and worked with paypal founder peter thiel, both of those men making appearances at the gop convention. his wife also worked

the former president himself looked almost emotional. he did look emotional. he was clearly taking this moment in as this became the defining moment not just of the night, but maybe of the entire convention itself. you see the images here. you are about to see him with his newly picked running mate, that 39-year-old first-term senator from ohio. j.d. vance. somebody who was a never trumper, as he himself described it in 2016, but has since become one of the most vocal supporters of the trump brand, seen as the he ir to the maga moecvement, i you will. we expect to hear, of course, from senator vance coming up later on in the week here at the republican national convention. mr. trump's big speech will be thursday night. he said he basically ripped up what he described as a tough speech against president biden to strike a more unifying tone. we have heard from his advisers

news that multiple rally goers noticed someone acting suspicious at metal detectors. a u.s. senior official now tells us that was thomas crooks and that local law enforcement pursued him. now, senior law enforcement officials also tell us that two local police officers found crooks on that rooftop, but were unable to stop him before he opened fire. meanwhile, the fbi investigation is going full tilt. they are working around the clock analyzing the electronic devices that thomas crooks owned, including his cell phone. they say so far, although they have gained access to it, it has not revealed any motive, but they continue to look. they also tell us that a dozen firearms were found in the search of the crook family home. hoda? >> all right, a lot of investigating yet to do. thank you. turning to major league baseball. if you like home runs, then

political magazine. we're going to speak to his friend and close colleague in just a moment. but first anne thompson joins us. good morning. >> good morning, hoda. throughout his 38 years, jfk jr. was almost always in the spotlight. he was a favorite of the paparazzi. so famous, many people thought they knew him. now a new book offers an intimate portrait from those that knew him best. i sat down with the authors at one of john's favorite restaurants here in new york. >> my wife and i prepare for a new administration and for a new baby. thank you. >> reporter: born days after his father was elected president in 1960, the world knew john f. kennedy jr.'s name before he did, a spotlight that would follow him through childhood joys and tragedies. his professional failures and successes. >> ladies and gentlemen, meet george.

one of his closest friends says he smoked weed every day. >> yeah, he did. >> reporter: is that how he coped with all that was going on around him? >> no. some people have a glass of wine or two at night. and that was john's, you know, outlet. that was john's relaxation. >> reporter: a portrait more human, more personal of the man who was in many ways america's son. why does he still live in the american memory? >> he was the symbol of hope after that horrific tragedy. this country sort of surrounded him and in some ways felt like they were taking care of him for the father he didn't have. now, something that really comes through in all of these accounts is the sense that john was searching for his father, who he obviously never got to know. rosemary said that she felt, that john felt ripped off that everyone else knew his dad and he didn't. jfk jr. is a very revealing

book. you are reading stories from john's closest friends, so you get to see his true personality up close, the good and the bad. it is out today. >> annie, thank you. we are joined by his friend who served as the creative director of his magazine. she said he was always searching for his father, someone he didn't know. it is like the itch you can't scratch. you are always kind of seeking that. did you get that sense from what you knew of him? >> i always thought it was weird because his memories of his father, i think, were similar to all of ours. so it was sort of like -- i don't know if he knew what was real, what he remembered, what he didn't remember. >> what was in a photograph? >> yeah. that's part of the reason, too, we were all connected with him because we lived it with him. >> it's so interesting to hear the things, because he was going through things that a lot of families go through. he was in couple's therapy. they said he was seeking an outlet for relief and in his

case he smoked pot. he does seem in ways to be like a lot of other people. >> well, yeah. i mean, he was -- that's the part -- it's hard when i'm looking at photos of both of them, and it's like, you know, everyone sees interviews and reads articles. it is so hard to get the essence of what they are like because there was no social media. there was no way to hear them talk enough in a casual way. and they are both these funny, very special people. funny, lots of jokes. john was like a prankster. >> oh, he was? >> yeah. everything was a -- i mean, i got prank phone calls. he'd knock on the art room door, i was a creative director, and he would always be like maestro, are you naked? can i come in? just like weird. or, yeah, calling my apartment. i remember once we flew out to

l.a. together and he picked a hotel and we stayed there. i put in my expense report and everyone went nuts in accounting and i got all these calls and it was too expensive and all of that. whatever. that night i get home and press the answering machine. there's john, disguised voice as the finance guy going, you know, matt, you know, you can't just order up $10 glasses of orange juice and, you know, go to these hotels. then he goes, hi, matt, it's john. >> it was his way. >> he's funny. and she was up there with him. she was very funny. >> what was it -- he had a great sense of humor. and there was so much about him we didn't know. you knew him. what are some things that we didn't know about him that only those closest to him did? >> well, i wish people could really -- i mean, you always see the interviews and think what a great guy, what a nice guy. but this was a really, really good guy.

i was thinking the other day or saying to somebody, it was really someone who, you know, he would talk to a senator and, like, the newsstand guy and a movie star or you or me, and it was really, like, the exact same tone for everybody. it wasn't like a put-on thing like we all try to be like. he was really like that, where he valued whatever you did or wherever you came from or whatever point in life you were at. it was interesting. >> and just lastly, did you ever think what he would think about the events that have been going on in politics today? we have the assassination attempt of donald trump a few days ago and just what's been going on in the country. do you think about that? >> yeah, i have been thinking about it a lot because i think he, you know, was very anti-violence and anti-guns. and i just remember when columbine happened, that was something that really affected him. so i think, you know, part of the whole thing with "george" was he was trying to get people

you are, the most important thing is to slow down and check on how you are feeling. in order to feel empowered during the day, you have to know where you are so you can get your needs met. that begins with knowing where you are emotionally. >> so what does that look like? let's pretend i'm a snooze alarm hitter. how do you check in with yourself? what do you do? >> 60 seconds, real quick. before you move, be still and do a body scan. imagine there is a line just going down your body from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet. i want you to notice anything in your body that stands out. maybe your heart is fluttering because you are excited about something today. or maybe your gut is kind of tight and you realize you are anxious about something today. we have to identify how we feel to know what we need. >> that doesn't mean you should try to fight the thing. you are just acknowledging. that's all you're doing? >> you are noticing how you feel and then recognizing feelings, especially the painful ones indicate that you need something. >> now let's pretend my heart is pounding because i have a presentation. my stomach hurts because i'm

worried. let's say i know those things. what is the next step? >> the next thing to do is to feed the need. so i love to compare emotional pain to hunger. >> okay. >> when we're hungry, we eat. we know if we don't eat all day, we will start out feeling powerful but end feeling weak. it's the same thing with my emotional needs. if i notice i'm feeling sad, i need connection. >> okay. >> so i may reach out to a friend. i may ask my partner for a hug. if i notice i'm angry, i need boundaries. we're usually angry when something valuable isn't being treated that way. >> what if your heart is pounding because you have a presentation? i know i'm nervous and i have to do this thing. what is it i can try to address right away in that moment? >> you can do things with your body to shift how you are feeling with regard to that anxiety. i can show you a few. >> wait. what are you talking about? >> i'm talking about emotions are bodily experiences. >> you can physically move your body around? you know how you always tell

kids to make the willies out? it's kind of that same thing? >> exactly like that. can i show you? >> of course you can. >> all right. the first thing you can do is called a vu exercise. >> vu? >> vu. it is because the internal feelings that are uncomfortable, you can't scratch them like an itch. but sound can reach them. exhale, vu. do you feel the vibration? >> that moves it. >> vu. >> okay. that vibration starts to move it. another thing you can do is tension release. so i want you to inhale calm. as you exhale, make everything tight. now inhale and relax again. how did that feel? did it feel -- do that automatically. >> so you are tensing on the exhale. that seems counterintuitive. >> you can do that in front of the microwave. >> while coffee is brewing.

exclusive code to help you stock up on ingredients. use today10 to get $10 on your first three online pickup or delivery orders of $50 or more. good to see you. so we will start with a chicken melt. >> yes. >> you like to start by poaching your chicken. >> i like to poach the chicken because that way it stays nice and moist. what's really great is you put it in, you can use broth, but i like to add some fresh flavor to it. i have celery sticks. for this i'm using some chicken breast. if you prefer more flavor, you can use chicken thigh. i know you need more flavor. just use the same amount. basically, two pounds of whatever kind of chicken you like. no bones, no skin. boil it until it's fully poached. over here, i put in some onions, celery, salt, vinegar. this just adds great flavor to the poaching liquid. all of that goes in there. >> okay. >> this gets mixed up, boiled up. and then the chicken is fully

cooked. you want to do this while it's still warm. take it out of the simmering liquid and put it in your stand mixer. or you could use a regular bowl. while it is really warm, what's great is all you have to do is add the ingredients to it. this will start to break it down. have you ever done this? shredding the chicken with the paddle. here we go. no, that's the wrong one. did we plug this in? that's it. >> you guys know what a mixer is. >> because it's not plugged in. anyway, you put everything in. >> you all know how a mixer works. but what's great, while it is shredding, you can add your ingredients in here. >> here we have artichokes. >> we've got some roasted red peppers, capers, oregano. so these are basically the
