convention has donald trump's former bitter rivals vow to back him. we previewed tonight's key speeches and the bay area case now playing a pivotal part of some of that rhetoric a ground breaking change in the works on capitol hill. president biden angles to roll out term limits for supreme court justices. we're going to break down the odds it'll ever see the light of day facing major pushback. new legal. action as california becomes the first state to ban schools from notifying parents about their children's gender identification, the instant divide is creating, as elon musk says, hasta la vista to the bay area. this is today in the bay thanks so much for joining us on this wednesday morning. i'm kris sanchez, i'm in for laura garcia, and i'm marcus washington. let's get you started with a look at that forecast this morning. forecaster cinthia pimentel is here in bakery this morning. and cynthia how's it feeling and
5:02 am
looking out there this morning. we've had some pretty comfortable days this week. and today will be pretty much the same. we're starting off our morning 50s and 60s but br we dropped it down a few degrees in san rafael. some cloudy skies to watch out for that visibility change as you head out the door. overall, maybe a few degrees warmer. it'll be hit or miss in some spots. we'll do 60s by the coast to some low 90s inland, but tomorrow and friday as we get ready for the weekend, we're also going to bring those numbers up a little bit, but i'm tracking some triple digits into next week. so in a few minutes i'll walk you through that forecast, what we can expect and where that century mark will arrive in some locations starting as soon as, maybe even on monday. so i'll be back with that in a few minutes. back to you. all right. thank you very much, cynthia. so the republican national convention continues riding a wave of emotion in tonight. three. we are looking live at milwaukee here. this is the arena where tonight, donald trump's running mate will face his first big moment on the
5:03 am
national stage tonight. ohio senator, junior senator, jd vance will make the feature address last night. meanwhile, the focus was on crime and immigration and texas senator ted cruz took the opportunity to bring up a seven year old san francisco case and put it back in the spotlight. think of kate steinley. she was 32, walking with her father on a san francisco pier when a bullet tore through her heart. we'll remind you that in 2017, jurors actually found jose zarate not guilty of murder in the shooting of kate steinle. the defendant said he accidentally fired the gun that he found under a bench. he was later sentenced on a federal weapons charge and never possessed valid immigration documents. now, some of donald trump's longtime rivals are setting their beefs aside to unite republicans around their clear party leader. today, in
5:04 am
the bay's brie jackson has more from wisconsin, with former president trump looking on his former primary rivals made the case for him to serve a second term. trump's former un ambassador nikki haley sending this message to undecided voters. you don't have to agree with trump 100% of the time to vote for him, florida governor ron desantis, touting trump's ability to lead the party while blasting president biden. we need a commander in chief who can lead 24 hours a day and seven days a week. america cannot afford four more years of a weekend at bernie's presidency. we asked people here at the republican national convention about issues driving them to the polls. this electio. santos lopez tells me policies that support legal pathways to immigration motivate him like
5:05 am
myself. if you want more migrant workers, make it easier for them to understand how to cross over. you just want to keep the bad guys out. the economy is another issue that's top of mind. despite record low unemployment under president biden, some say they believe former president trump would do a better job. i can see his policies changing my life because it's not going to cost me so much at the grocery store, unity has been a major focus at the convention. people tell me the assassination attempt against trump was a wake up call that things must change. the rhetoric and the incident that happened to president trump, that that's just not what america is about. former president trump is expected to send a similar message when he takes the stage thursday in milwaukee, brie jackson nbc new. gang members, sex traffickers and now confirmed isis terrorists in. well meanwhile
5:06 am
this morning from the other side of the aisle, a potential policy change in the works, nbc news has also learned president biden considering backing term limits for supreme court justices. now, in many circles, the idea has always been seen as a major long shot, and it would be first having to be approved by congress. the white house not commenting now, the president is now focused on key battleground states and presenting his case for reelection. and las vegas yesterday, addressing attendees over at the naacp convention. and he brought up what's been a divisive issue since the recent presidential debate, when he trump used the phrase black jobs. of course, here's what he thinks of black jobs. i love his phrase black jobs. it tells a lot about the man and about his character. folks, i know what a black job is. it's the vice president of the united states.
5:07 am
now the president is waking up in vegas this morning where later today, he'll address a conference for latino leaders. a developing this morning, another big hit to san francisco. elon musk pulling all of his businesses out of california, as he said. and he is citing a recently signed first of its kind law as one of the major reasons why that law prevents schools from informing parents about their children's gender identity. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab live for us in san francisco this morning, and ginger musk's response is just the start of the blowback. well that's true. good morning marcus and chris. you know we spoke with one business owner or today, nbc bay area spoke with one business owner in the area. they say that they'll actually feel the loss of x and its employees with a 20% or so drop in small business in the area. musk is not the only one who is upset about this new bill that's
5:08 am
been signed into law by governor gavin newsom. the liberty justice center has also filed a lawsuit against governor newsom and the state of california to challenge assembly bill 1955, which, as you mentioned, marcus bars all california school districts from notifying parents if their child asks to change their gender identification. senior counsel at the liberty justice center saying, quote, p k to 12 minor students, most of whom are too to young drive, vote or provide medical consent for themselves, are also too young to make life altering decisions about their expressed gender identity without their parents knowledge. but that is precisely what ab 1955 enables, with potentially devastating consequences for children too young to fully comprehend them. elon musk, also taking the opportunity to take swipes at governor newsom with a new law posting on x, quote this is the final straw because of this law and the many others that preceded it, attacking both
5:09 am
families and companies, spacex will now move its headquarters from hawthorne, california, to starbase, texas. now from video that was shot last night, x headquarters in san francisco on 10th and market streets without its x musk posting, have had enough of dodging gangs of violent drug addicts just to get in and out of the building. but at san francisco state university, professor says political decisions could prove costly for companies. we learn from disney and budweiser that it's not really smart for corporations, especially well known ones, to get into the political realm, to take sides. now, the departure of x or space x, i should say, would mean a loss of around 13,000 jobs in california. so that is significant. now, this isn't the first time, as you may remember, that musk has left california. he did so in the middle of the
5:10 am
pandemic and at least has partly come back to california recently with an engineering hub set up in palo alto in san francisco, ginger conejero saab today in the bay. i mean, he often says things that don't end up coming to fruition, too, so we'll watch that. thank you. ginger. now, in just a couple of hours, a new ferry service connecting oakland and alameda is going to set sail. this is a 45 foot yellow pontoon. it makes sense that its nickname is the woodstock. it's going to offer 37 trips daily between the two cities. the water shuttle free, and it takes less than ten minutes between stops. you can pick up the shuttle in oakland on broadway by jack london square in alameda, you can catch it at bogle circle immigrant park on fifth street. today's inaugural inaugural ride departs at seven in the morning. it looks like a little school bus. yeah, a lot of friends over in oakland, so they're going to take it to go
5:11 am
to the target in alameda. oh yeah, and it's practical. not just touristy, right. but hey, from, up there in oakland, alameda. let's head on down to santa clara, where a warning for anyone traveling through the south bay later today, because the city of santa clara warning major traffic backups due to the rolling stones. yes, the rolling stones are in town now. you're looking at nbc bay area sky ranger video from over at levi's earlier this week. see those workers there getting the stage ready to go for the show? officials say expect heavy delays on highways 101 237 880. lawrence expressway, great american parkway and san tomas expressway. and when it comes to the weather out there tonight, well, meteorologist cinthia pimentel, of course, been working through that all, and it should be a pretty nice one out there for those fans. it should be fabulous down here in santa clara. a perfect afternoon for anybody coming down here into the south bay. maybe people are getting the party started early. we are starting the morning with some patchy clouds, but don't worry, that should clear out. and by noontime 70s and comfortable down here in santa
5:12 am
clara, we'll briefly hit the 80 degree mark at 3 p.m. and then cool things down slightly into the afternoon and going down into the 70s, maybe start of the show around 8 p.m. and still a nice clear night ahead as we go on and wrap things up in santa clara. now, today's temperatures are going to be pretty comfortable. typical summer day, but we are looking at a warm up that's ahead, possibly starting tomorrow. so we'll take a look at those details in the full microclimate forecast. but for now mike needs to help some people get around down here into the south bay with those cheaper gas prices to get some satisfaction with the prices at the pumps. now, south bay, i'm seeing some of the prices creep up just a few cents, but we still have the best in san jose and one of the best in the state. 363 at great gas on stevens creek boulevard. not far, far from valley fair and santana row, a concord rules contra costa county with 3.99. that price point all over that city. we'll call out arco on willow pass road today, and in the north it's vallejo with the same price posted at 3.99 j and r gas on serrano drive. those
5:13 am
folks are sharing on the roadways and we're tracking changes with all of you. gasbuddy.com on the roadways are pretty calm. light drive. it was very calm for a tuesday, except for two bigger crashes on 680. but those all cleared for the morning commute this morning. 680 is not an issue. one crash up there at the top of the screen on mountain house. not really a major commute. the rest of our viewers 580 moves smoothly out of the altamont. no delays for vasco road. so we're at your minimum speeds. just a little build out of the altamont guys and that's standard. back over to you all right. thanks, mike. 512 for you this morning. more options to stream ahead for you here on today in the bay. the number of new shows coming to netflix users, america trying to get inflation under control. maybe we could take a lesson from the uk, although they are having one problem kris that's swiftly getting out of well, it's also a big day in hollywood as the emmy nominations will be announced this morning and we expect a fan favorite in the mix. in the mix. we'll keep it right here. we hope you're watching today in the morni saig
5:14 am
5:15 am
5:16 am
over the richmond-san rafael bridge and throughout the east bay. you'll notice some patchy clouds here and there, mostly starting off in the 50s. by around 10 a.m, we'll start to mix out and get into some more sunshine. by noon, 69 degrees and comfortable. we're going to enjoy the heat. staying away for now. i am tracking a warm up on
5:17 am
the way. i'll show you in the microclimate forecast. yeah they're enjoying the traffic. staying away for now in fremont, 880 moves very smoothly here. heading south past tesla with these headlights. no major issues into the south bay. we will talk about a couple of south bay activities that we're following. of course, a few bigger events and we'll talk about a smaller one as well coming up. well, good morning. very happy wednesday to you. stocks had another great day tuesday as investors become convinced of an interest rate cut. maybe later this month. i mean look at this dow number. that's crazy. reports say salesforce dropped about 300 employees as part of streamlining. but we haven't seen any paperwork filed with the state just yet. ginger talking about elon musk pulling his companies deeper and deeper into the culture wars. tesla is going to be under pressure this morning. chip stocks are under even more pressure after bloomberg published an interview it did with donald trump, who
5:18 am
spelled out some of the new restrictions he would make on trade. trump also called into question whether we would defend the democracy of taiwan against the aggression of chinese communists. they make a lot of chips in taiwan, not just trump either. the biden administration also reportedly considering new restrictions on technology sales to china. american law lets the american president restrict the sale of technology, if that technology contains even the smallest amount of american know how or material, and just about everything does. as far as buying regular stuff, americans are on it. retail sales not slowing despite expectations they might. americans say they're worried about the economy, but they keep spending on trips and goods and clothes. over in the united kingdom, they seem to have inflation under control. the central bank there says it's holding steady at 2, right where economists want it. except there was a weird spike
5:19 am
in restaurant and hotel prices and economists say they know what or who is to blame. once again, it is taylor swift who held ten concerts in england and the broader uk in the past quarter, driving up hotel prices. and she's coming back next month. okay, we're not going to talk about taylor swift on our episode of pod podcast sand hill road this week we're going to talk about, among other things, something madonna, the material girl might like more years ago, scientists in the south bay were trying to make solar panels by printing printing lattices of silicon, and they realized if they use carbon, they'd get something entirely different. here's one of their early investors, james joaquin, and he casually mentioned that he and his co-founders were working on something new, something stealth. and he said, james, we got really good at laying down single atoms. we just picked the wrong atom, and i wasn't smart enough to initially catch the hint. all right, sand hill road,
5:20 am
anywhere you find your podcasts, it will be ready for publication here in a minute. you can take it to work with you. this episode we're talking about of course, diamonds, south bay makes a lot of diamonds, which don't realize both the kind that go into industrial applications and the kind that go on your finger. and it was that insight that allowed them to do that. so a lot of science this week. you like science. it's a good episode. you don't usually talk to people who are not smart enough for something. but i keep it at a simple level. you know why? because i'm in the room. oh stop it. you walk away with knowing just a little bit more once you listen to it. all right. thanks, carter. you bet. all right, so, look, if you are running out of things to watch on netflix, oh, yeah, you're likely going to get excited about this news here, because a lot of shows which started out on cable will now be available to stream netflix signing a deal with amc to bring 13 original shows to the platform. it includes several spinoffs of the walking dead, breaking bad and
5:21 am
interview with the vampire. maybe yes. the latest partnership between the cable and streaming giants. the first shows will debut on august 19th. now my parents wedding anniversary later this morning. the announcement of this year's prime time emmy nominations. a lot of contenders, but the breakout series the bear abbott elementary, hacks, only murders in the building, shogun and a longtime favorite, the crown are likely to be featured nominees will be announced at 830 this morning. winners will be announced at the 76th annual emmy awards on sunday, september 15th. can't wait for that. that's a pretty big diversity of shows. no kidding. big blend. all right, well, look, let's talk about that forecast because it's been really nice lately. and i'm hoping that we're going to repeat what we've seen the last few days i think so. and you know we're going to see all that sunshine. it's kind of hard to sit yourself down in watching tv. so let's take a look. yeah. get out. enjoy what we have. this morning we are tracking
5:22 am
some patchy clouds, some drizzle, fog overtaking the city skyline there in san francisco. and we are going to be clearing out of it as the time rolls into about mid-morning. so don't worry about that. we'll put you at 68 in san francisco, nice and mild there, 87 in santa rosa, warming up into concord at 90 degrees and 93 in morgan hill. we are going to be bringing back that high pressure. notice how it's moving back east. we've kind of been playing seesaw temperatures going down, temperatures going back up. and we'll notice that in livermore. enjoy the mild day while we have it. we're going to warm up for your thursday and friday. i know those weekend plans are just itching right there, but we're going to bring it back down into the weekend before we see that heat spiking again. as we go on into early next week. so enjoy the mild temperatures while we have them. san francisco will also be seeing some gorgeous weather going into the 70s for next week. while our inland valleys are going to be preparing for that heat to come. so make sure you've got all the water and things to keep you cool in the next couple of days. now, mike, you heard about a crash in san jose? yeah, was
5:23 am
looking for it on the live camera. we have our shot 101 six 8280 over change. and it's a car fire or a crash. i don't see any smoke or any flame. i don't even see any slowing on the sensors. so we'll continue to monitor this one. oh, there's some slowing now. so we'll check toward tully road. we'll watch that. meanwhile, the rest of the bay shows a nice light, easy start. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. all right. going one on one with simone biles. next on today in the bay, we hear from the gold medalist who says she's feeling stronger than ever ahead of the summer games in paris. she'll tell us what she learned about herself during a break from gymnastics and what her goals are going forward. here's a hint gold. we'll be right back a taste of
5:24 am
5:25 am
5:26 am
paris right here on nbc bay area usa's women's table tennis team will take its final swing before heading to paris. that team, holding a final round practice match. this is over at its national training center. it's called 888. table center. it's in burlingame. fans will be able to attend the olympic simulated games get underway at 7 p.m. it includes meet and greets as well as giveaways. table looks so small. so as for maybe the highest profile u.s. team of all, everyone picturing an amazing olympic comeback. of course we're talking about simone biles, who you see here,
5:27 am
and team usa's women's gymnastics. biles will be looking to rebound after her withdrawal from the tokyo games this morning. on the today show. she tells hoda she is in a much better mindset this time around. do you feel like you have something to prove, i always say no, but i would say the only thing i have to prove is to myself that i can get out there and do it again. and what do we think? i think we're going to get the job done. i feel really confident. it's nice to see you're happy, you know, she seems really unguardedly happy. so the 2024 paris olympics opening ceremony is a week from this friday. you can watch the big event along with all the olympic coverage right here on nbc bay area code usa. all right. well, next here are the top stories we're following on today in the bay, including staying prepared for natural disasters ahead. the one item you don't want to leave out of that go bag this wildfire season levi stadium turns ten years
5:28 am
old. the slightly well known rock and roll band performing milestone. stay off this
5:29 am
5:30 am
performance on tap for tonight and the potential traffic impact and let's take a live look outside. little cool now, but
5:31 am
get ready for another warm up forecast. cinthia pimentel is tracking the return of summer heat for many parts of the bay area. is your area one of them? this is today in the bay good to have you with us on this wednesday morning. i'm kris sanchez, i'm in for laura garcia and i'm marcus washington. let's get you started with that forecast this morning. forecaster cinthia pimentel is here in for kari pretty in pink. that is pink right. on wednesdays we wear pink. out there or yesterday morning you two. good morning everyone. we are starting off with our typical summer pattern where the fog has rolled in overnight. chilly start in santa rosa, 49 degrees, but everybody else 50 and 61 degrees down here in the south bay. as we go on and talk about what we can expect today, i'm going to put you at 87, in santa rosa, 68 in san francisco and 82 in san jose. so we can see right there compared to average, we're hovering just about where we should be for this time of year. enjoy this
5:32 am
while we have it, because we are looking at numbers spiking in the next couple of days. i'll show you where those areas are going to get into the 100 seconds. come tomorrow, friday, and even into next week. so i'll be back with that in just a few minutes. back to you. all right. looking forward to it. thanks, cynthia. you know what? it may be hard to what? believe? yes. levi stadium turning ten today. that's ten years of some of the incredible memories with another one right around the corner. can you believe it? today in the bay's bob redell is live outside the stadium in santa clara. and bob, time must be on your side ahead of tonight's celebration, because a pretty well known group playing the role of house band. yeah, this guy named mick jagger, ronnie wood, keith richards are part of this band called the rolling stones. you guys should check them out. they're really good music. i think they're going to go somewhere. it might start taking off once the radio stations start playing them anyways. yes, they'll be taking center stage here tonight at levi's stadium, which as you mentioned, turns ten years old today. i remember
5:33 am
covering the groundbreaking of levi's and having jesse push in to the southeast corner, because that is where that steel beam right there, the one an angle that was the first one that was installed in the corner of what would become the home field for 40, the 40 niners. construction began in 20 2012 on what at the time was the state of the art, state of the art stadium still is in many respects. there were questions about how big events like football games and concerts, like the rolling stones would impact traffic around here. that was one of the issues at the time, given the location of the stadium, and it's still an issue. but fans know this and they've been able to adjust accordingly as we assume they will tonight. as well. also, leaving candlestick in san francisco was a big deal for 49ers fans at the time, and it introduced the city of santa clara to a national nfl tv audience. after the stadium officially opened on july 17th. that's today's date. back in 2014, we have done a lot over
5:34 am
the course of the last decade. we've hosted super bowl 50, we've brought taylor swift and beyonce and some of the world's most beloved artists to santa clara. we just hosted a soccer event and have hosted many others. and so the last decade has been incredibly exciting for all of us at the 49ers. but we're really just excited for the next ten, the next 20. we know for sure we're hosting the super bowl and the world cup in 2026, and that feels like it's just the start. the city of santa clara will begin closing roads around levi's later this morning. expect traffic delays on major freeways like 101 237 880. lawrence expressway, great american parkway, where i'm standing on san tomas expressway. i know mike's and have more on that momentarily. rolling stones concert begins at 730 tonight at levi's stadium, celebrating a decade. reporting live here in santa clara, bob redell. today in the bay. thanks bob. look, so let's talk about that because a lot of folks out there, huge band, a lot of fans
5:35 am
heard of them. yeah so the thing about it is it's getting the round is going to be it tough. that'll be the issue. yeah. for folks who are envious, you can probably get within earshot. but you know what? there's nothing like seeing them. i'm sure i hear. let's look at the roadways though. the concerts at 730. but we hear that tasman itself, which goes right in front of the concert venue, or levi's stadium as we know it, will be closed at about 930 this morning. avoid the area pretty much today. now to get through the area. they also see signs. the event they're talking about will be the levi's stadium event. well, we'll talk about a few more coming up in a few minutes, but i've marked 101, 237 and even 880. over on the right you might see signs and you might see additional traffic getting over there well before 730. hopefully dining in the area as well. now, options for you if you want to avoid the drive and the parking and the hassle into or out of the area, you can use vta, the light rail, the orange line specifically does make great time over to great america, although i think the green line ends there as well. you can take the bus routes 55, 57, 59, caltrain. you'll have to get over there via light rail from
5:36 am
their station. and the last train after there's a special one that leaves 75 minutes after the concert ends. so get over to the caltrain station and bart also has the orange line will transfer you from the milpitas station. remember, bart goes all the way down to milpitas now so you can transfer over there. back to you. thanks, mike. idea. well, family and friends expressing heartbreak. this is after the death of a high school student killed by a suspected drunk driver. mourners last night gathering in the south richmond area to remember 16 year old ricardo funes, the vigil happening at the same home he visited the night he died. that's where he gathered with families to watch sunday's copa américa final. relatives say when he pulled out of the driveway to leave, a drunk driver slammed into his car. we spoke with his mother, who's feeling grateful for the outpouring of support. he was very loving, even though he has two siblings that are boys, he will always go around and give us kisses all. richmond police
5:37 am
say that suspect was not seriously injured and is still in custody facing manslaughter and dui charges. horribly sad happening today in san francisco. the suspect in a deadly drive by shooting returns to court for a preliminary hearing. the shooting happened in early april in the mission district. the victim had just started working at a nearby barber shop when the suspect, 30 year-old alexander martinez from martinez, or rather from richmond, allegedly pulled the trigger. he has already pleaded not guilty. san francisco police want to know if you have seen a man they say is tied to an assault in the early hours after the 4th of july holiday. they say the victim shot this video shortly before the assault. they say it shows the suspect appearing to block a self-driving waymo car with a passenger inside. when the victim told the man to leave the car alone, that man attacked the victim. also happens to be disabled and was treated at the
5:38 am
hospital for injuries, including a fractured skull. this all happened on buchanan street in pacific heights. anyone with information should contact san francisco police. well, now that we are in the active wildfire season, we'll remind you again to have that go bag ready. and that includes any medication that you or your family needs. experts are advising people to keep a bag ready to go, and to take two weeks supply of any meds that you take, but cycle through that every month or so just to keep things fresh. make a list of your prescriptions along with the prescribers. contact information. and if you take medications that require refrigeration like insulin, make a plan to keep it cool. you might want to put some cooler packs in the freezer now and leave an insulated lunch bag near your go bag of other supplies. that'll be sort of a cue to you to grab your medication and ice packs out of the fridge, pro tip and insulated cup can also work in a bind. you can throw some ice in
5:39 am
the bottom, put a couple paper towels, put your medication in another paper towel, ice on top and close the lid and that will keep it cold for quite some time. that's some good advice there. so the doctor of pharmacy reminds us to not let cold prescriptions freeze, as they can diminish the efficiency. it's a cold, but not too cold, right? kind of like san francisco. cold on top, party on the bottom. what? it's like a mullet this morning. cynthia is here with the forecast. i like that. well, you don't have to put your mullet up for today. we're going to keep temperatures pretty seasonable there. in san francisco. we are looking at some drizzle out there towards the coastline as well. 50s and 60s for the majority of us, except we're going to bring it to some sweater weather to start our morning in san rafael. 49 degrees. let's stay up in the north bay and take a look at our planner in sonoma. of course, those overcast skies. but don't worry that sunshine is on the way. look at 8:09 a.m. you're already looking at some
5:40 am
beautiful skies, and by noon we are going to be looking at 76 degrees warming up into the low 80s there in the north bay, continuing on with a gorgeous afternoon for any plans you have on this fine wednesday in sonoma. so enjoy this tranquil weather while we have it. we are going to be warming things up into tomorrow and friday a bit cooler through the weekend, but then some triple digits return into next week. i'll show you the full forecast coming up in a few minutes, but for now, back to you. do we have mike? we have mike, we have traffic. all right. the party keeps going. come on in. all right. let's take a look out here folks. we talk about the south bay. sorry, cynthia, to surprise you like that, we're looking at the south bay, where we do have northbound 101. considerable amount of slowing because we talked about it earlier. heard about a crash 101 right before that 680 interchange. it was blocking two lanes. quite a bit of backup because that's the same timing as we had that first burst of traffic coming into the area. so instead of being up here by oakland road, we have it here approaching capital expressway
5:41 am
