week. right now at six, a show of unity, former rivals now coming together to endorse former president donald trump at the republican national convention. as we await a key
6:01 am
speech tonight from his vice presidential pick. plus, packing up and moving out, elon musk says that he is moving x and space x to texas. the law passed, which he says was the last straw, and san francisco schools face the painful reality of major budget cuts. the grim new message for parents and families. this is today in the bay thanks for joining us on this wednesday morning. i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for laura garcia, and i'm marcus washington. we'll get a look at that forecast a lot going on today, mike. but then we want to head over to cinthia pimentel right now because you have a look at that forecast, which is going to be nice for us to get out and enjoy the day. yeah. let's just hand it over to marcus to tell us the rest. that's just you took the words right? lovely, lovely weather around you enough. i kind of think like you. great minds. good morning everyone. we are starting off our morning with some stratus typical for our summer season. 50s and some low 60s down here in san jose. let's
6:02 am
go out and plan our day out in livermore. we are going to be starting off to mix out of that cloud cover by around 8 or 9 a.m. this morning, mid 70s for lunch time. perfect opportunity for you to head outside and enjoy that. even the summer camps are going to be in for a nice warm day. i'll put you in at 87 as we go on into 3 p.m. i'll be tracking the rest of the forecast for the remainder of this week, as well as a heat spike coming our way. i'll show you where those temperatures are getting into the hundreds. but for now, mike, you're seeing more of the impact from the crash in san jose. yes. so we have this crash, which i still believe despite the lack of detail there on the chp report, i still believe there are at least a lane blocked or at least activity over on the shoulder. north 101. just as you approach 680 and 280 the overcrossing there. so this has been jammed up from that same spot just shy of story road. and in fact it continues to build, starting to slow down near capitol expressway. now more folks coming on the area, seeing the slowdown, probably moving over and taking capital expressway
6:03 am
over here. because look at that. 87 now sees more slowing. so we're rippling back from this crash slowing on 87. now we may see more traffic over here on 85. and i think monterey here is showing more as well. that's the only thing unusual for the bay right now. back to you. thank you mike. the republican national convention riding a wave of emotion into night three. here's a live look at milwaukee this morning outside the arena where tonight, donald trump's running mate will face his first big moment on the national stage tonight, ohio junior senator jd vance will make the feature address. now, last night, meanwhile, the focus was on crime and immigration. and texas senator ted cruz took the opportunity to bring back a seven year old san francisco case into the national spotlight. think of kate steinl. she was 32, walking with her father on a san francisco pier when a bullet tore through her heart. now, in 2017, jurors
6:04 am
actually found jose inez garcia zarate not guilty of the murder of kate steinle, the defendant said he accidentally fired a gun that he just found under a bench on that pier. he was later sentenced on a federal weapons charge and never possessed valid immigration documents. now, some of donald trump's longtime rivals are now setting their beefs aside to unite republicans around who is now their clear party leader. today in the bay's brie jackson has more from wisconsin, with former president trump looking on his former primary rivals made the case for him to serve a second term. trump's former un ambassador nikki haley sending this message to undecided voters. you don't have to agree with trump 100% of the time to vote for him. florida governor ron desantis, touting trump's ability to lead the party while blasting president biden. we need a commander in chief who can lead
6:05 am
24 hours a day and seven days a week. america cannot afford four more years of a weekend at bernie's presidency. we asked people here at the republican national convention about issues driving them to the polls. this election. santos lopez tells me policies that support legal pathways to immigration motivate him like myself. if you want more migrant workers, make it easier for them to understand how to cross over. you just want to keep the bad guys out. the economy is another issue that's top of mind. despite record low unemployment under president biden, some say they believe former president trump would do a better job. i can see his policies changing my life because it's not going to cost me so much at the grocery store, unity has been a major focus at the convention. people tell me the assassination attempt against trump was a wake up call that things must change. the
6:06 am
rhetoric and the incident that happened to president trump, that that's just not what america is about. former president trump is expected to send a similar message when he takes the stage thursday in milwaukee, brie jackson nbc news. all right, 605 and live. look at capitol hill right now, where the secret service will soon brief lawmakers about saturday's shooting. at that pennsylvania trump rally. it is now expected to be addressed next monday. during a hearing by the house oversight committee. secret service director kimberly cheadle will attend. other hearings are also in the works. well, meanwhile, this morning from the other side of the aisle, a potential policy change in works, nbc news has also learned. president biden is considering backing term limits for supreme court justices. now, in many of the circles, the idea always seemed like a major long shot, and it would be the first
6:07 am
having to be approved by the congress. now, white house not commenting on this. the president is now focusing on key battleground states and presenting his case for reelection. he was over in las vegas yesterday, addressing attendees at the naacp convention. he brought up what is been really a divisive issue ever since the presidential debate, when trump used the phrase black jobs. of course, here's what he thinks of black jobs. i love his phrase black jobs. it tells a lot about the man and about his character. folks, i know what a black job is. it's the vice president of the united states. now the president is waking up in las vegas this morning where later today, he'll address a conference for latino leaders. our developing this morning, another big hit for san francisco. elon musk says he is pulling all of his business out of california. and he's citing a recently signed, first of its kind law as one of the major
6:08 am
reasons why that law prevents schools from informing parents about their children's gender identity. today, at the base ginger conejero saab in san francisco for us this morning live. okay, so ginger musk's response is just really the start of this blowback. well, good morning, marcus and chris. one small business owner that we spoke with says he'll feel a 20% drop in his business from x leaving the area. bigger picture musk taking space x and x will mean big money loss, not just for san francisco, but also for california. and musk isn't the only one who is upset about this new law signed by governor gavin newsom. the liberty justice center has also filed a lawsuit against governor newsom and the state of california to challenge assembly bill 1955, which bars all california school districts from notifying parents if their child asks to change their gender identification. senior counsel at the liberty justice center saying, quote, pk to 12
6:09 am
minor students, most of whom are too to young drive, vote or provide medical consent for themselves, are also too young to make life altering decisions about their express gender identity without their parents knowledge. but that is precisely what ab 1955 enables, with potentially devastating consequences for children too young to fully comprehend them. elon musk, also taking the opportunity to take swipes at governor newsom with a new law posting on x, quote this is the final straw. because of this law and the many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies, spacex will now move its headquarters from hawthorne, california, to starbase, texas, now x headquarters in san francisco. over in mid-market, now without its x musk posting quote, have had enough of dodging gangs of violent drug addicts just to get in and out of the building. the chronicle first reported that real estate firm jll has confirmed it has been hired to
6:10 am
market x's headquarters, which is made of roughly 800,000ft■!s. now those add big numbers to san francisco's already vacant office space. but a san francisco state university professor says moves based on political decisions could prove costly for companies. we learned from disney and budweiser that it's not really smart for corporations, especially, well known ones, to get into the political realm, to take sides. well, the departure of space x from california would mean a loss of around 13,000 jobs. i know in the previous hour, kris you mentioned we'll have to wait and see how this really all plays out. this isn't the first time that musk has pulled out of california. he did so during the pandemic, but a couple years later, bringing back an engineering hub in palo alto. so i guess we'll really have to wait. wait to see how this all plays out, big picture wise.
6:11 am
yeah all right, guys, all right. thank you ginger. all new at six a bleak new forecast for san francisco schools with word that some key positions will not be filled. the chronicle reports ten elementary schools are telling families no new hires will be made for their currently vacant assistant principal positions. the superintendent also said it should save the district $2 million, and that the decision ultimately is not in the district's hand. this is part of a larger hiring freeze that includes the vetting of all current vacant positions. the district previously announced the elimination of more than 900 jobs. district wide, a warning to anyone traveling through the south bay later today. well, the city of santa clara warning major traffic backups due to the rolling stones. you're looking at nbc bay area sky ranger video from over levi's earlier this week. you can see there those workers putting the stage together for tonight's show. officials say expect heavy delays on highways 101 237 880.
6:12 am
lawrence expressway, great american parkway and san tomas expressway. and a look at that forecast for us, because a lot of folks, of course, you see right there, they're going to be outside in the elements. how are they looking for us, cynthia? well, i think it's going to be a spectacular day down here in santa clara. people starting the party early at around noontime already in those low 70s. and by the time that people are rolling up to levi's, i'm going to keep you in the low 80s. so make sure you're drinking a lot of water wearing that sunscreen. and hey, you might not even need to bring a jacket to levi's. as we look out into the afternoon, 72 at 8 p.m. and those upper 60s at ten, once the concert is wrapping up in, you're staying in the south bay. it's going to be a pretty mild night, so we're going to enjoy this while we have it, and i'm going to send it over to mike now, who is going to help you get around and find those cheaper gas prices to get you down here in the south. we'll check those gas, gas, gas prices. let's look at the south bay might be creeping up a few cents here and there, but i did still find the best in san jose
6:13 am
with 363 at great gas on stevens creek boulevard. then concord rules contra costa county with 399 as its popular price point. today we're going to call out the arco on willow pass road in the middle and in the north bay. it's vallejo with the same price, posted 399 at j and r gas on sereno drive. thank you for sharing the changes or the best for your area. gasbuddy.com. let's get to the roadways. when we're talking about a pretty smooth drive around most of the bay, the bay bridge did just start to show a little backup, but the big backup here, north 101 approaching six 8280 interchange. there is something going on still from an earlier crash. i think it's just starting to clear the area north 101 and 87, as well as capital expressway bogged back to you. all right. thanks, mike. mike all right. how about not ready for prime time amazon experiences unexpected glitch on one of its busiest days of the year ahead on today in the bay. the disruption leaving some bargain hunters empty handed over in britain, they seem to have inflation tamed, except for one problem that's swiftly
6:14 am
causing price hikes. let's go out to the futures. speaking of prices. so great day on the markets yesterday.ome s in 16 years, greg gerstner will land the perfect cannonball. with friends he's already meeting now. at aarp volunteer and community events. to help make sure his happiness lives as long as he does. the younger you are, the more you need aarp.

skies for the morning commute. temperatures in the upper 50s. not bad. we'll clear out and see more sunshine as we head into the mid-morning hours. by noontime, beautiful sunshine and temperatures in the low 70s. we
6:17 am
will be heading for warmer temperatures in the upcoming days. i'll show you the details coming up in the full microclimate forecast and beautiful drive right here. westbound taillights away from us to the peninsula. speed limit signs show 65, and i believe that's what these folks will give him credit. this is what they're driving 65 now the dumbarton bridge just a bit to the south had a disabled vehicle. looks like it's cleared over to the peninsula side. we'll track both bridges. we'll track all your bridges. but the big slowing is in san jose. well, good morning. very happy wednesday to you. stocks had another great day tuesday. look at this as investors became convinced of an interest rate cut. maybe later this month reports say salesforce has dropped about 300 employees as part of streamlining, but we haven't seen any paperwork filed with the state about it. ginger was just talking about elon musk pulling his companies deeper and deeper into the culture wars. well, tesla will be under pressure this morning. chip stocks are even more under
6:18 am
pressure after bloomberg published an interview it did with donald trump, who spelled out some of the new restrictions he would make on trade. trump also called into question whether we would defend the democratic island of taiwan against aggression from chinese communists. now they make a lot of chips in taiwan, and it's not just trump putting pressure on chips. biden administration also reportedly considering new restrictions on technology sales to china. american law lets the american president restrict the sale of technology if that technology contains even the smallest amount of american know how or material, and almost everything does. as far as buying regular stuff, americans are on it. retail sales not slowing despite expectations they might. americans say they're worried about the economy, but they keep spending on trips and goods and clothes. over in the united kingdom, they seem to have inflation under control. the central bank there
6:19 am
says inflation now holding steady at 2, right where economists want it. except there was a weird spike in restaurants and hotel prices. and economists say they know what or who is to blame. once again, it is this woman, taylor swift, who held ten concerts in england and the broader uk in the past quarter, driving up hotel prices. and she's coming back next month. okay, we're not going to talk about taylor swift on our latest episode of our podcast, sand hill road. we're going to talk, among other things, about something madonna, the material girl, might like more. years ago, scientists in the south bay were trying to make solar panels by printing lattices of silicon, and they realized if they used a different element, carbon, they'd get something entirely different. here's one of their early investors, james joaquin, and he casually mentioned that he and his co-founders were working on something new, something stealth. and he said, james, we got really good at laying down single atoms. we
6:20 am
just picked the wrong atom, and i wasn't smart enough to initially catch the hint. you can listen to our podcast, sand hill road, on your way to work this morning. get it wherever you get your podcasts of course, the lattice work of carbon is diamond. okay, and you know what's amazing about artificial diamonds is they're not artificial, right? right. i mea, they're diamonds in the same way that water is h2o. it doesn't matter if you get it out of a stream or make h2o in a lab. it's still water. that's where the pressure comes from, right? like how to make it? that's right. but otherwise the one distinction is lab grown diamonds are better. i mean, they're they're flawless. yeah. clarity. all right. thanks, scott. you bet. thank you. scott. well, today will be the second and final day of amazon's prime event. and if you were trying to buy something last night, you may not have had the been in the prime position to do that. that's because amazon's ad portal for merchants crashed. as
6:21 am
a result, there was a disruption in sales. in a statement to bloomberg, amazon said it is resolving the issue and despite that promise, prime day is off to a fast start. sales rose nearly 12% over the first seven hours, all trending this morning. your best chance to see to live like san jose's joey chestnut. let's hope it's going to be a smaller quantities though. that is because today is national hot dog day, and there are some ways to score free or discounted dogs. doghouse will give reward members free hot dogs when they order in the store. and you know what? wienerschnitzel is actually going to offer four chili dogs for $4. shake shack it's a free hot dog when you spend at least $1 and not so coincidentally, hot dog on a stick is breaking out of the secret menu item called the charlie. for today, only, though. yeah, the hot dog stuffed inside cheese on a

stick. oh oh, my. oh, wow. is that your thing? yeah, a little emotional there? so we know what you're going for lunch. i might have to try that something if w. investigative reporting. so part of the unit? yeah. food. trust. mike i'll. it won't be too hot to be at the grill if you want to make your own dogs. yeah, you can do that. of course. it's a summertime. people buy and eat hot dogs all summer long. let's take a look outside walnut creek. the best cameras i have to show you. beautiful as the sun starts to creep on in. and san francisco, if you look closely right there we are looking at some drizzle out towards the coastline. but don't worry, those gloomy skies will soon mix out to plenty of sunshine. we'll do upper 60s air in san francisco to some low to mid 70s around the bay shore. a few spots will be hitting the 90s today, but prepare for more heat to come. as we go on into tomorrow, we're going to see more places climbing into those mid 90s in the north bay. the east bay, the south bay, even the immediate bay starting to
6:23 am
creep on into those nearly 80 degree marks in some places. 82 in mountain view, i think friday, at least for this week, will be the warmest day of the week. and some people take it with good news. of course, they love the summertime and the heat. we're going to do triple digits and concord nearing that century mark in santa rosa, some mid 80s along the bay shore to some upper 90s in morgan hill. now that heat will stay with us. saturday and sunday will be a bit of a break before we continue to see that dome of high pressure taking over the west coast here as we go on, even into next week, so we can see it painted here in our 7-day forecast for our inland valleys today. enjoy the mild weather while we have it tomorrow and friday. that's short heat spike before we bring it down for the weekend, and we still see that heat continuing with us. as i mentioned into monday and tuesday, some triple digits in our forecast. so if it's not for you, prepare. but if it is, enjoy the hot dogs out there while we have them. san francisco will be in for some mild weather too. mike, you have
6:24 am
better news in san jose. finally, we've been waiting for this. yes, this incident now cleared from the chp blotter north 101. as you approach story road and the six 8280 interchange speeds, just lit up green now through the area. so that's great news. we do see that ripple back. so there's still slowing at capital expressway. but as things improve folks no longer have to divert over on capital expressway to 87. and we do unfortunately now see slowing north of there at oakland road. but that's a typical pattern with things being a little bit lighter there as well as over at the bay bridge. back to you. thanks mike. all right. it is 623 for you this morning. and you know what? going one on one with simone biles next here on today in the bay. we're going to hear from the gold medalist who is feeling stronger than ever ahead of the summer games in paris. what she says she learned about herself during that break from gymnastics and her goals going forward. you know what the goal is kris don't don't, don't tell them. no, no. starts with a w, ends with an end. sorry. we'll talk about when we c

ready for another warm up, cinthia pimentel is tracking the return of summer heat to many parts of the bay area. is yours one of them? this is today in the bay thanks for joining us on this wednesday morning, i'm kris sanchez, i'm in for laura garci, and i'm marcus washington. let's head over to cynthia. this morning she is tracking what we can expect outside. and i like what you got for us. oh, thank you very much. i'm sure many people will be happy that we'll continue this calm summer pattern for at least one more day out the door this morning. of course it is. some gloomy skies, even some drizzle in san francisco, mainly upper 50s and some 60s, but still struggling to warm up under that cloud cover. 49 in santa rosa for this morning. we will see another sunny and comfortable mild day around the bay area. nothing to write home about, but we are going to be talking about the heat in the coming days, tomorrow and into next week. so i'll be back with those details in a few minutes. back to you. all right. thanks. so much, cynthia. well, it may be hard to believe, but levi's stadium turning ten today. yeah, that's
6:33 am
ten years of some really incredible memories with another one right around the corner. today in the bay bob redell is live outside the stadium in santa clara and time must be on your side tonight because it's a pretty big celebration coming u. well, some new memories tonight when the rolling stones will be playing here at levi's stadium. my first memory of the stadium was covering the groundbreaking. that was about 14 years ago. i'm jesse push in over there to the southeast corner of the stadium was one of those beams there. the angled beams that was the first installed here as the groundbreaking of levi's stadium, which of course became the home field for the 40 niners. construction began in 2012 on what at the time was a state of the art stadium. still is in many respects. there were questions, though, about how big events like football games and concerts like the rolling stones would impact traffic here in santa clara. given the location of the stadium, and it's still an issue. but fans know this and
6:34 am
they've been able to adjust accordingly for the most part. also, leaving candlestick in san francisco. big deal at the time for fans for the 40 niners. but it did introduce the city of santa clara to a national nfl tv audience after the stadium officially opened on july 17th. that's today's date. back in 2014, we have done a lot over the course of the last decade. we've hosted super bowl 50, we've brought taylor swift and beyonce and some of the world's most beloved artists to santa clara. we just hosted a soccer event and have hosted many others. and so the last decade has been incredibly exciting for all of us. at the 49ers. but we're really just excited for the next ten, the next 20. we know for sure we're hosting the super bowl and the world cup in 2026, and that feels like it's just the start. so when there are big events like the rolling stones tonight, the city of santa clara begins closing the roads early and they will do that again later this morning around levi's to expect major
6:35 am
traffic delays on major freeways like 101 237 880. thank goodness we have my buddy mike inouye to help us navigate this. again, this is not their first rodeo. rolling stones start at 730 tonight. mike, what can fans expect, especially people who aren't necessarily going to the show, but need to do their business getting to and from areas near and around levi's? well, you know, bob, we know also for big events. it's not the first rodeo over here at levi's stadium. so right here, tasman drive. bob talked about local roadways. tasman goes right past levi's. they're going to stop it up. whoa. that's all i that's all i can do. all right well looking over here tasman drive will be blocked about nine after nine. avoid the area. watch lafayette, watch great america parkway. bob talk about the freeways. you see signs. you've seen signs about the event. 237 101 even as far as 880, you might see more traffic coming into the area. keep that in mind if you want to avoid driving in the crowds and parking, and you're going to
6:36 am
levi's stadium, there are transit options. vta is the king of them. you get off at that great american station, caltrain and bart do have shuttles and options to get over there via the orange line. getting to and from the south bay back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, you know, family is family and friends. they are expressing some heartbreak. this is after the death of a high school student killed by a suspected drunk driver. mourners last night gathering in south richmond to remember 16 year old ricardo funes. now the vigil happening, the same home he visited the night he died. that's where he gathered with family watching sunday's copa america final, relatives saying that he pulled out of that driveway to leave. that's when that drunk driver slammed into his car. we did speak with his mother, who was feeling grateful for the outpouring support. he was very loving, even though he has two siblings that are boys, he will always go around and give us kisses all. richmond police say that the suspect was not seriously injured and is still in custody, facing manslaughter and dui charges.
6:37 am
happening today in san francisco, the suspect in a deadly drive by shooting returns to court for a preliminary hearing. the shooting happened in early april in the mission district. the victim had just started working at a nearby barber shop. that suspect, 30 year old alexander martinez, is from richmond. he pleaded not guilty. now that we are in active wildfire season, we'll remind you again to have that go bag ready and that it should include medication that you or your family need now, experts do advise to keep one ready to go with a two week supply of those medications that you take, but cycle through them every month or so just to keep things fresh. make sure that you make the list of those prescriptions along with the prescribers. contact information. if you take medication that requires refrigeration, make sure you keep them cool. things like insulin, for instance. you might want to put some cooler packs in the freezer now and leave an insulated lunch bag near your go
6:38 am
bag of other supplies. that will be sort of a cue to you to grab your medication and ice packs out of the fridge, pro tip and insulated cup can also work in a bind. you can throw some ice in the bottom, put a couple paper towels, put your medication in another paper towel, ice on top and close the lid and that will keep it cold for quite some tim. yeah. doctor wilcox there reminding us to not let cold prescriptions freeze as they can diminish the efficiency of that. well, new at six. a dire new forecast suggesting california will never meet the growing need for more ev charging stations. a new state assessment finds california will need to build 1 million public charging stations for a projected 7 million ev cars over the next seven years. that would mean 129,000 new charging stations per year, and that's seven times the current pace. some of the obstacles include money, of course, but also backlogged permits and grid delays. will you put them right?
6:39 am
