this so important it was the only article that the gunman was seen carrying before trump took the stage, before he got up on the roof, right at the time when local police started looking for him because they heard from rally-goers that there was a suspicious person, they didn't see a rifle on him, that would have elevated the amount of risk, but the range finder, at least could have indicated that could be used as a potential threatening way, to measure the distance someone would need to fire their gun particularly in a sniper situation, so local police saw him with the range finder, identified as suspicious, they told secret service there in butler just moments before he took to that roof and it's raising new questions about whether or not more should have been done when he was identified by local police and when secret service found out about their pursuit of

him. >> julia, thanks. shaq, we have some new information about the victims that are still hospitalized. the two people who were shot that day on saturday. what do we know. >> reporter: we're hearing from allgheny general hospital, their condition is now improved, from critical condition to now serious condition. the latest update the hospital is sending out. the families of one of those two victims here, families of james copenhaver, they provided this statement, the family would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of support, james who goes by jim as he recovers from injuries he tragically sustained during president trump's rally, it goes on to say, jim would like to thank first responders, medics and hospital staff who have provided him with the initial and continuing care. later in that statement, it

talks about how he's dealing with life-altering injuries and that's going to take some time for him to fully recover and it's important as we continue to cover this story and we talk about how this attack did spare the life of the former president, you still have one person who was killed and two others who are going to be dealing with life-altering injuries. >> julia, can you talk to us about the transmitter that was found near the body of the gunman in addition and the investigations into this. >> reporter: a transmitter, you can see the picture there, from our affiliate in pittsburgh, that transmitter can be used to start off fireworks that can be remote to start a fireworks show, also used to start any kind of incendiary or explosive device. they found some of those devices inside his car. a question is, how much worse

welcome back. aing you the number of democrats are demanding new jersey senator menendez resign from office after his guilty verdict yesterday. convicted on 16 counts include corruption, bribery and acting as an agent for egyptian. he's vowed to appeal the conviction. so, many democratic lawmakers were withholding xhebts on menendez while this trial was still happening, now a lot of them are speaking out. >> reporter: that's right, our last count shows 43 democratic senators are now calling on senator menendez to resign that's a vast majority of the senate democratic caucus the most notable name that has come out since that guilty verdict

yesterday is senate majority leader chuck schumer. yesterday, after the verdict he did take that extra step and said it's time for the senator to resign, in addition there's growing movement amongst some of menendez's colleagues to threaten to expel him from the senate forcibly if he refuses to go on his own, one prominent voice calling for that is his fellow new jersey colleague cory booker. >> he must stand up and leave the senate, he must do that and if he refuses to do that, many of us and i'll lead that effort to make sure he's refused from the senate. >> reporter: among the democratic senators threatening to vote to expel bob menendez are bob casey of pennsylvania, jackie rhodes locked in

competitive races. other senate, they want to draw a contrast between democrats don't tolerate convicted felon in office compared to republicans who are nominating one for president. >> walk us through what the process would look like to replace him. >> reporter: first an expulsion resolution requiring two-thirds of senate to vote for it. very plausible chance that the senate gets there if menendez refuses to go. while he's now been convicted of acting on behalf of foreign government. not a tenable proposition and the process will be governor phil murphy gets to appoint his replacement for the remainder of the year. >> okay, thanks so much. a prominent democratic

lawmaker now calling on president bide on the withdraw from the 2024 race despite the president's refusals repeatedly to step down, california congressman schiff who's running for senate in california said in a statement today that president biden should, quote, pass the torch, the highest profile democrat to explicitly call on biden to exit the road. as president biden eyes some major reforms to the supreme court, term limits and enforceable ethics code. aaron gilchrist is following this for us. let's start with the news from congressman schiff calling on the president to step aside, clearly calls to replace bide on the ticket. this is new ap poll adults who describe them as democrats, two-thirds say they want biden to leave the race. what's the biden campaign

saying? >> reporter: the campaign is very much aware of the calls and the numbers that are out there, kate, we should point out that congressman schiff is now the 19th member of the house of representatives to call for president biden, the 19th democrat to call for president bide on the exit the race for president. out of 213 democrats in the house, the congressman put out this statement expressing support for biden in general but also saying this, a second trump presidency would undermine the very foundation of our democracy and i have serious concerns about whether the president can defeat trump in november, while the choice to withdraw from the campaign is biden's alone, the biden campaign, we reached out to get a response to what the congressman had to say they pointed us to comments that president biden has made in recent weeks, he intends to stay in the race until the end. he intends to beat donald trump in november and he's the best person to win the election and

to serve another four years. >> aaron, president biden's potential reforms, his ideas to reform the supreme court, what do we know about what he's saying and how would he get that done? >> reporter: sources are telling us, kate that the president is looking to propose legislation that would create term limits for members of the supreme court, it also update the code of ethics for members of the court to the extent it would be a code that could be enforceable potentially by the legislature, not a lot of details about what this proposed legislation would look like. this is something that would be a major shift for president biden as in the past he said that he doesn't necessarily favor trying to push changes on the supreme court, if that were to change, come to pass and the president has expressed as he did on a call over the weekend with democratic lawmakers, it would take a democratic house

scary situation at a san diego beach, this video shows a group of lifeguards working to save a teenage girl who got stuck in a hole. it happened at mission beach if san diego on tuesday, lifeguards say the girl was 6 to 8 feet deep in that hole when the sand partially collapsed around her, lifeguards were digging for 20 minutes before that girl was freed, she was checked out by paramedics and is expected to be okay. the mayor of paris is sending a big message ahead of the olympics the seine river is safe for swimmers. she jumped into the river this morning, she promised to test the waters herself and has finally done it nine days before the olympics opening ceremony. swimming in the seine has been banned since 1923 because of how dangerously polluted it was. but organizers have invested $1.5 billion to clean it up for the olympics this year. the river is set to host several

open-water swimming events. nominations for the 76th emmy awards are in. "the bear" set a comedy series record with 23 nominations. the month-long writers strike resulted in fewer entrants this year. the emmys will take place less than a year after 2023 ceremony the star-studded ceremony is september 15th. >> can't wait. hearings about the assassination attempt on former president donald trump. >> speaker mike johnson said it will launch a special task to investigate what happened on saturday. house republican has just subpoenaed the head of the secret service to testify next week. what are lawmakers hoping to get out of today's briefing.

>> reporter: the first step in angoing lengthy and wide-ranging investigation by members of congress from multiple committees in both the house and the senate, today, i expect that this will be much of just an early stage get to know you and set expectations by these members of congress from these different organizations that they're hearing from, they're hearing from representatives from the department of homeland security, from the u.s. secret service, from the fbi as well, this just shows how many different federal agencies are going to be touched by this investigation and could have played a role in preventing this assassination attempt from happening. this is obviously has become a serious focus from members of congress and more than anything, what these briefings will serve to do to make sure these administration officials know that congress is going to demand answers because they want to know what went wrong and to prevent it from happening in the future. >> ryan, it was mentioned that there's already a subpoena that's been issued.

>> there's no doubt that's been under more of an intense focus than the director of the u.s. secret service, kimberly cheatle, the house oversight committee demand that she appears for a hearing on monday, july 22nd. they were given mixed signals led them to take the provocative move to issue her a subpoena to be here on monday, she's not only the one we could hear, they've asked a law enforcement officials to be at that hearing, many of them from the localities where this incident took place including the commissioner of the pennsylvania state police the sheriff of butler county sheriff's department and the lieutenant matthew pearson of the butler township police department. >> all right, ryan, thank you.

it's day thee of the republican national convention and it's get under way in a few hours. j.d. vance. garrett haake takes a look at his rise from political novice to vp nominee. donald trump's running mate set to take center stage tonight. a largely unknown figure nationwide, vance is already a celebrity in the make america great again movement, where he's now seen as mr. trump's political heir apparent. what does the selection of vance as donald trump's running mate mean for this party? >> it means that maga has now an enduring battle plan. j.d. vance is young. he is brilliant. >> reporter: to his supporters, vance's selection cements the dominant wing as the future of the gop where the freshman senator has been one of the loudest voices on capitol hill.

>> that's not our job. >> reporter: vance's populism includes support for higher minimum wage and backing donald trump's aggressive trade policies, including higher tariffs on imported goods. he's long been an opponent to abortion. the biden campaign seizing on vance's past comments, including this in 2021 about exceptions for rape or incest. >> look, i think two wrongs don't make a right. >> reporter: vance has more recently said he would support some, quote, reasonable exceptions. vance also embraced some of mr. trump's controversial proposals, including pursuing mass deportation of undocumented immigrants. >> we have to deport people. we have to deport people who broke our laws and came in here. i think we start with the violent criminals. >> reporter: echoing the former president's false suggestions of widespread fraud in the last election. >> if i had been vice president i would have told the states like pennsylvania, georgia and so many others, that we needed to have multiple slates of electors, and i think the u.s. congress should have fought over it from there.

>> reporter: and a key plank of project 2025, a conservative think tank's plan for a second trump administration, to overall the federal government by replacing civil servants with trump appointees, potentially firing thousands of government workers. >> if those people aren't following the rules, then of course you got to fire them. >> reporter: mr. trump has distanced himself from project 2025 and vance has said only donald trump will determine the next administration's agenda. vance's turn to shape the party will come later. >> this is about winning elections on down the line in '28 and beyond. >> reporter: vance is already being criticized by members of both parties, first from the left, with vice president harris out with a new video this morning suggesting he would be loyal only to donald trump and not to the constitution. and former trump rival chris cristie has an op ed which he criticizes vance's response to the assassination

attempt of former president donald trump. blaming democrats. not the kind of unity the republican party wants to see right now. let's turn to shocking discovery inside a hotel room in thailand. six vietnamese and american guests were found dead at a luxury hotel in bangkok and now police are investigating as a poisoning it's possible one of the six people poisoned the others of a business deal went bad. josh lederman has been following this one. the fbi is in thailand now, i understand, to assist with this case, what's the latest. >> reporter: the fbi now involved in this investigation, because of the fact that there were two americans among the dead, but police really have not at least publicly revealed what they know about exactly what

happened here. what they have said is that there were six people, all found dead in a hotel room after they did not check out, and when police went to the room they did not see any signs of any kind of a scuffle but what they did find was evidence of cyanide in all six of these people's bodies. the method of death, they don't exactly know what took place here, other than the fact they're looking into a possibility the motive was related to a business deal involving an investment in a hotel in japan, the husband and wife, a couple part of this group in this hotel, apparently had invested close to $300,000 in a project involving two other people who were part of this group as well, so that may be the set of circumstances that led to this tragic and very bizarre incident. >> josh lederman, thank you.
