last night republicans welcomed ohio senator jd vance to the national stage for his first speech as a nominee for vice president. today in the bay's brie jackson live for us in milwaukee. this morning at the rnc and brie look, what's the message that they're expecting to send to potential voters tonight? good morning marcus. so the message that we're hearing the campaign wants to send tonight is a message of strength. but last night, that's when we saw us. senator jd vance, he took the stage here, and that's when he introduced himself to the nation. vance shared his story with the american people and tried to downplay and really criticize the biden administration. now, vance's speech was a clear effort for the biden for the trump campaign to appeal to voters in key states, including michigan, pennsylvania and here in wisconsin. thank you, thank you. please us senator jd vance

taking center stage at the republican national convention, officially introducing himself to the country as former president trump's 2024 running mate. i stand here humbled and i'm overwhelmed with gratitude to say i officially accept your nomination to be vice president of the united states of america. sharing his personal story of growing up in poverty and seeing loved ones struggle with drug addiction challenges facing many american families. i grew up in middletown, ohio. a small town where people spoke their minds, built with their hands and loved their god, their family, their community and their country with their whole hearts. but it was also a place that had been cast aside and forgotten by america's ruling class in washington. from domestic issues to wars overseas, the former marine laying out ways a trump vance

administration would impact everyday life. together, we will make sure our allies share in the burden of securing world peace. no more free rides for nations that betray the generosity of the american taxpayer. the 39 year old's addition to the republican ticket follows the assassination attempt of former president trump. supporters say they are energized. the sleeping giant has been awakened. now because now you're going, you know, the man that he's putting his life on the line as the republican ticket makes its case to voters at the convention, president biden is leaving the campaign trail after testing positive for covid. he's now in delaware, isolating and being treated moorpark. and tonight is the main event. former president trump will take the stage right there behind me, and that's when he will officially accept the republican nomination. marcus all right. brie jackson in in milwaukee for us this morning. brie. thank you. well, from

milwaukee, we're going to head back here to the bay area, the san francisco republican party plans to gather tonight to watch former president trump's acceptance speech, which brie was just talking about there. a watch party is scheduled at trinity bar and restaurant along union street that begins at 6:00 tonight. new fallout this morning for the secret service in the wake of saturday's near assassination. a missed calls for more oversight, more lawmakers are demanding the agency director step down. during a briefing yesterday, lawmakers learned the shooter, thomas crooks, was reported as suspicious. more than an hour before gunfire erupted at the trump rally. pennsylvania state police notified secret service about a suspicious person with a rangefinder. director kimberly chino is accepting responsibility for the failures. she agreed to attend an initial house hearing. this is next monday, even before receiving a subpoena. but she has also said previously that she has no plans to step down. and during a

critical time, president joe biden is isolating after testing positive for covid, cutting a campaign stop short. and it comes as he is facing growing pressure to drop out of the race, according to cnn and multiple private sources. former house speaker nancy pelosi privately told biden polling shows that he cannot defeat trump and that he could destroy democrats chances of winning in november. a pelosi spokesperson would only confirm to nbc news that she has not spoken to president biden since friday. in a recent interview, biden said he would only drop out of the race if he had a health condition. meantime, the biden administration is announcing another round of student loan forgiveness. the education department is set to forgive $1.2 billion for 35,000 borrowers. this is a result of its recent fixes to a popular debt relief program for government workers. now, that program was passed by president

george w bush in 2007, and it allows certain not for profit and government employees to have their federal student loans canceled after a decade of repayment. now, the us government is taking a major step towards writing an injustice against hundreds of black sailors in the east bay. today, in the bay's bob redell joining us live near memorial for sailors killed in port chicago. blast in 1944. and bob, as i understand it, hundreds of those who refused to go back to work have actually been exonerated. that is correct. 80 years after this explosion, which happened 80 years ago yesterday. good morning to you, marcus and ginger. yesterday, the us secretary of navy officially exonerated the 256 black sailors who were unjustly punished for refusing to return to work following this deadly ammunition explosion at the port chicago naval base, which used to be located not far from where i'm standing, which is now here,
6:11 am
a memorial near martinez in port chicago. we spoke with richard sublett, whose father, maurice, was one of the black sailors who survived the explosion of munitions that were being loaded onto a ship here says this announcement is long overdue. following the explosion, white supervising officers were given hardship leave while black sailors like richard's dad were told to return to work. hundreds of black sailors refused to go back, say, saying he never received proper training to handle that deadly ammunition. a majority of them, including richard's dad, eventually returned after threats of disciplinary action, but they were still court martialed and a group of 50 black sailors known as the port chicago 50. they refused to return at all and were charged with mutiny. it's high time that these 256 sailors got exonerated. they finally did. now we can celebrate their lives, and we can celebrate that without this cloud of, you know, adjudication, hanging over their heads. yesterday, president
6:12 am
biden released a statement that reads in part, today's announcement, referring to yesterday, marks the end of a long and arduous journey journey for these black sailors and their families who fought for a nation that denied them equal justice under the law. congresswoman barbara lee also weighing in, writing, quote, this is a monumental day for justice and for the families of the port chicago 50. i appreciate the secretary of navy taking this crucial action to exonerate these courageous men who were unjustly court marshaled by the navy following the explosion at port chicago. so, again, there are going to be a number of events today through this weekend to commemorate the 80th anniversary of this deadly explosion, again, which happened july 17th, which was yesterday's date back in 1944. and later this morning during our midday newscast at 11, we'll speak with us representative mark desaulnier, who for years has been fighting for his exoneration, which finally came

through yesterday on the 80th anniversary, reporting live here in near port chicago. bob redell today in the bay. so glad to see it did. all right, bob, thank you. and it's 612 for you this morning. let's take a live look at the san jose skyline there. cynthia i mean, i see it's not as clear as i feel like i would normally expect, but it's still going to some patchy clouds there by the foothills. if our eyes do not mistake us. ginger. good morning. let's check in on our neighbors. santa clara, this morning. starting off in the low 60s, some patchy clouds there too, but quickly mixing out to lots of sunshine. warm 70s right there as you go through mid morning and into your lunchtime hour. some 80s on the board so if that is too warm for you, make sure you get things done early today as that heat is returning not only to santa clara, but through the east bay, the north bay and some parts of the city as well. that won't be the hottest though. tomorrow is the hottest day of this workweek before more of that heat returns next week. the good news is they're notice they're a stable

weekend. those temperatures are going to pull themselves back just a little bit before we launch into some triple digits. so i'll guide you through the maps. the full microclimate forecast, and we'll talk about some weekend events coming up this hour as well. but mike, you're helping people get around with some cheaper gas prices trying to. so i'm looking for signs like i see a little bit of movement in the gas prices for the station. i pass on the way to the freeway every morning. it's down $0.08, but the bay area's best well, it's still in san jose, but it's $0.02 higher, unfortunately. 365 will call on platinum gas on tully road here at the top, plenty on tully road, we have alameda county a few now under four bucks. we'll call national on alvarado boulevard in union city. they'll get named here for 3.99 and then nothing under four bucks in san francisco at all. but the best price there is, they call themselves the best. it's 439 at best. gasoline and mini mart on san jose avenue right there. so we get those reports and those changes through gasbuddy.com from all of you. thank you. on the roadways, not a lot of change. we will look at the northbound side though of 87.
6:15 am
this is great. we just got word that all lanes have been cleared now from the earlier crash at curtner. so they're slowing. that develops from capitol expressway. should clear. we get a little break. then there's a build again. scott. right where the arrow shows. that will start again in about a half hour. all right. mike, well good thursday morning to you. and business news nasdaq got whacked thursday. yesterday rather wednesday. worst day in months or years now. we knew this was coming because we talked about this before the opening bell yesterday on today in the bay. new chip restrictions on chips to china and trump's interview with bloomberg calling into doubt whether we would keep our promise to taiwan, sent chip stocks in the nasdaq lower. this is 23 in me. it is reached a settlement, it says told the business times reached a settlement over that big data breach of users information. now 20:03 a.m. still on the nasdaq. you can see it's in danger of being delisted. this is john deere, the tractor and heavy equipment maker, says it's

ending its dei programs will no longer participate in what it calls social cultural awareness events like parades and ethnic celebrations. it's also going to look over its training material and remove preferences to quote socially motivated messages. there's been huge pushback in some corners of corporate america against dei. that's diversity, equality, inclusion. tesla's ceo sometimes deliberately misspells it as dei in his messages. he doesn't like it. in announcing the changes, deere also went out of its way to point out the existence of diversity quotas and pronoun identification has never been and are not company policy. united airlines should have pleased investors with a report. it earned a lot of money in the quarter, but the worry is there are many empty seats on its planes, what the industry calls capacity. airlines have been rushing to add flights for all the americans who want to
6:17 am
travel, but maybe they overdid it. empty seats means cheaper fares. a moon probe designed at nasa ames in mountain view will not be going to the moon. this is nasa animation of viper. that's volatiles investigating polar exploration rover. it was going to look for water near the moon's south pole, but nasa spent about $450 million so far. cost overruns, delays, changing priorities mean nasa has decided to quit while it's ahead. that estimates they'll save about 84 million remaining. the nasa scientists who are putting viper together made this little video. it was a time lapse video. now nasa is asking them to take it back apart again and say pieces for future moon missions. we discussed. we could run this video backwards and basically have that effect for you, but you feel sorry for anyone who spent several years designing and building something and then being told, hey, listen, we're going in a different direction. it happens in science, you know, it's but, you know, dispiriting. it's like as a kid you were
6:18 am
building something and you know, your cousin or your sibling comes and knocks it down and takes it apart and you're like, exactly. sounds like my house every single day. yeah. pretty much. just don't step on the moon parts into your bare feet because it really hurts. yes yeah. i'm going to tell them, hey, can you guys pick up those pieces for future missions, please? i like that, thanks a lot, scott. well spotify is introducing a new spanish language version of its ai dj feature. it uses an ai generated voice to create radio like commentary, providing additional information and context about the song you're listening to now. spotify says this makes it less likely that you're going to skip to another track. the spanish speaking dj will be available to premium users in select latin american and spanish markets, and the regions where the english speaking dj has already launched. nice options that it is. all right, ginger, brace for yourself. okay, you know why? seat belt on, seat belt on. there you go.
6:19 am
because there's a project that's coming. it's a reboot here. and it's going to blow folks away over the movie theaters because it is a remake. well, not a remake, but more so of a reboot, i should say, of a popular film from the 1990s. take a look. are you seeing this? we got twins. twins? they're combining. yes. so that is twisters with the s? yeah. officially opening across the nation tomorrow. but there are some early showings tonight across the bay area. this is one big budget film here. our comcast subsidiary, universal films, is actually co-releasing. this, along with warner brothers. i recently virtually spoke with two of the stars of the film there, glen powell, as well as daisy edgar-jones. they say that this film is a whole lot more than just those visual. i think it's so exciting to see, you know, real people against real odds. and, and, you know, i think there's so much for an audience to go and see. nothing is stagnant about this movie.
6:20 am
obviously, the storms aren't stagnant, but neither are the characters. they have these really, really fun growing places. you know, there's just a lot of dimension. there's a lot being thrown at them, a lot throwing them. indeed so the stars really are hoping that this new film blows away the original film's box office as well. i'm sure because twister the original not with the s, but twister, grossed half a billion dollars globally, adjusted with inflation. that's just over $1 billion today. i didn't realize it made that much money way back in, you know, back in the 90s. i mean, when you do a promo with a cow twisting, i know, like you said, you remember that that cow, i definitely remember. yeah. well there's more there's no cow this time, but there's a lot flying up. a lot of flying. two twins. sounds like an ultrasound to. you're like, oh my god, there's twins. all right, 619 right now. hey, so new for you this morning. someone is waking up with a little extra cash. oh my goodness, more cash. oh, wow. san jose gas station reportedly sold one of two winning tickets. another big two in this past tuesday's fantasy five drawing. that's according to the mercury
6:21 am
news. but they have to split the top prize. that's because someone played the same winning numbers in anaheim. each winner will receive just a little more than $162,000. the winning ticket was sold at the shell gas station along monterey road in san jose. a heads up. no one won last night's fantasy five, drawing. so, you know, possibly chances for the future there. but. hey, some good news. it's always nice to win. someone wins. oh my gosh, can't you be nicer? yeah. you know what? i'm going my. because we're always there. well it's a win for them. and it looks like it's going to be another win for us. jackpot on the weather front. oh yeah. here we go. feeling like summer out there today. we are looking at our morning upper 50s and some 60s santa rosa still in the 40s this morning. but lots of sunshine on the way, even through san francisco that fog is starting to mix out. we will
6:22 am
be under a heat advisory, the area shaded in orange, so parts of the north bay, the east bay through the delta, down into the south bay mountains. that's 10 a.m. today to 11 p.m. tomorrow. so 90s and some low one hundreds are returning while the bay and the coastline here of the east bay stays in the 70s and 80s. we think about fire danger, and we think of all those things associated with some caution ovr the next couple of days, we go up into the one in novato, even hotter in santa rosa, as well as over in concord, the tri-valley down into the south bay 92, in los gatos. while we see some low 70s there in the city. and if we're talking 70s in the city, we are building that heat. even more as we go on into tomorrow, which will be the hottest day of this workweek. so we're looking at some places reaching the century mark in places like santa rosa, concord approaching that hundreds down here in the south bay, while the peninsula also seeing some warm and mild days into next week, we will be
6:23 am
looking at even hotter temperatures, returning with those hundreds that desert heat approaching parts of the bay area. now saint helena, i know the weekend right there. saturday and sunday is just a few degrees cooler than that 103 for tomorrow, but please take that and we are going to go into some warmer temperatures into next week, so please just use those little breaks while we have them. san francisco will be the place many people go for that relief from the heat. mike, you are starting with an update on the south bay. what's going on? we had that crash. it turned out to be no injuries, which is great, but now it's a non-issue. in the last 30s the speed sensors now have now all cleared to green from capitol up to curtner. that's great news. we also have that first bill that's just about cleared for 101. so this 87 and 101 both good for the south bay. but there is now new slowing heading down in toward hayward out of san lorenzo. the crash may be to the shoulder now approaching 92. i'll check on it back to you. thanks. a lot, mike. well, aiming for redemption in paris

6:28 am
don't forget you can catch all the big events along with all the olympic coverage exclusively right here on nbc bay area. where else would you go? nowhere else. nowhere else. go, kara. go kara. i love that, all right. 627 for you this morning. top stories we're following today, including addressing mail theft. the new plan to stop thieves who are now continuously targeting residential areas. and the president told us he has covid. but guess what? some of the people in your circle might be telling you the same thing. we're seeing increased rates you a look bay area. i'll give you a look bay area. i'll give in 16 years, greg gerstner will land the perfect cannonball.

step aside from the campaign. and we're also tracking the summer covid surge. the president down with covid. the message from health experts as california reports, some of the highest infection rates. and the clock is ticking for people living in one east bay encampment. the new legal ruling fast tracking the sweep there and the possible timeline. this is today in the bay. thursday morning is here. i want to say good morning to you all. i'm
6:32 am
marcus washington, and i'm ginger conejero saab. i'm in for laura garcia. and it is looking out to be a very beautiful morning there in san francisco. cinthia pimentel is tracking what we can expect in the city and other parts of the bay area. oh, it's going to be a beautiful day, some parts a little bit toastier than others. but if you're lucky enough to start your weekend in napa on this mini friday, prepare to go out there. maybe on the earlier side, temperatures into the afternoon, warming into the 90s. we will be under a heat advisory starting at 10 a.m. today for the north bay, east bay and the south bay, and that goes until 11 p.m. tomorrow night. so we need to find ways to stay hydrated. if you work outside, go on into the shade a brief pause over the weekend, we're going to draw those temperatures down a little bit before more of that inland heat is next week. so we'll talk about that. but we're talking about this buildup on the bay bridge toll plaza. surprise. the bay bridge. yeah. you know, it's going to be here, folks. but let's get a closer look because i want to talk about the top of the screen. we
6:33 am
do see slowing coming over and off of the 880 overcrossing. and that's more volume than we've seen for a while, even on a tuesday. so we'll track that. but so far, no major issues at the toll plaza there is slowing a disabled vehicle now coming toward the caldecott tunnel, just shy of the tunnel slowing things down in orinda. we also see westbound 80 at the top of the screen. there may be a crash approaching highway four. i'll get more detail because that's what the slowing pattern looks like. this is recovering the earlier crash 880 toward the san mateo bridge and the south bay, just starting with the second build, but 87 maintains a smooth drive. the earlier crash cleared back to you. well, breaking news in vallejo. that's where police are investigating a deadly shooting. they say right now, they will only let us know that it was a juvenile. you can see from this video here dozens of shell casings on the ground. we do know it happened around 11 last night at carolina and buck street. this is a few blocks from city hall. police say no arrests have been made. and right now, there's no information about a possible suspect. well, right now, more
6:34 am
to talk about in decision 2024. as we continue on of what's happening, the pressure for joe biden to leave the presidential race now appears to be coming from all sides. it's terrible timing. scott mcgrew the president has covid yet again. he does. it is terrible timing. now it's a mild case. say his doctors. we've seen a number of american companies telling their employees, if you have a mild case, feel okay, don't have a fever, come to work. but president biden setting a better example, he's gone home to delaware to recover. we last saw the president at a family restaurant in las vegas. now, we're not saying he got it there. that's just where we saw him last in public. the announcement came just hours after biden had said something somewhat off the cuff that the only thing would keep him from running again would be his health. but it's not. it's health. it's the polls that worry his closest allies like nancy pelosi, cnn reporting
6:35 am
pelosi went to biden to discuss his poor performance in the polls and that he might, quote, destroy democrats chances of winning the house. pelosi's office will only confirm the congresswoman met with the president. an ap poll released wednesday shows 7 in 10 americans think biden should drop out of the race. that includes all adults. when ap narrowed, it just to democrats, it's still two thirds. the poll was conducted late last week and has a margin of error of just under 4. several reports say. democratic leader chuck schumer went to see biden over the weekend again in delaware. no one paid that much attention to the fact that at the time, schumer only said they had a good meeting. but it was california's adam schiff who really made the news. schiff calling for biden to step aside. schiff repeats that old saw that it's biden's choice, but there is a choice he prefers, and that is to pass the torch, securing his legacy, schiff says, and allowing democrats to defeat
6:36 am
donald trump. now, as democrats struggle, the republicans are showing a unified front at their national convention in milwaukee last night, ohio senator jd vance, trump's pick for vice president, formally accepted his own nomination. that's the republican party of the next four years, united in our love for this country and committed to free speech and the open exchange of ideas. and so tonight, mr. chairman, i stand here humbled and i'm overwhelmed with gratitude to say i officially accept your nomination to be vice president of the united states of america. donald trump was there, too. he speaks tonight accepting his own nomination as the party's candidate, the third time republicans have put trump at the top of their ballot. nbc's coverage begins this evening. now, there is another other news
6:37 am
to discuss the special special counsel. pardon me in trump's classified documents, case has appealed a judge's decision to dismiss that case. in florida, judge aileen cannon threw the case out on trump's lawyers requests, saying smith had been improperly hired. the white house, though not president biden, will announce more student loan relief today more than a billion in relief for firefighters and police officers and teachers and nurses, people in public service. those programs have been challenged by republicans in court. it has been quite a week, one pundit said. billy joel could have written a new version of we didn't start the fire, just based on this week alone. meghan mccain, the daughter of presidential candidate john mccain, said in part, this is the most insane, intense, dramatic election cycle of my life and my dad picked sarah palin as his vice president. marcus, look summed it up right there. there. scott thank you.
6:38 am
all right. so we were just talking about the president there. well, his covid case, just one of the latest developments in what has really been almost a surreal week for the nation. but his case hardly an isolated one. in fact, california, among many states experiencing covid surge today in the bay's kris sanchez. she's live for us this morning in san jose. and kris, i know you're outside one wastewater facility. this is really critical in tracking the covid data in that area. well, marcus, as most of us well know, testing is not anymore. it's not the monitor. the that we that testing is not the way that we monitor covid anymore. now we test the wastewater in most of our counties and in the state of california, elevated levels are just about everywhere, including in the bay area. i want to show you the map of the bay area, and you can see those yellow areas indicate high covid activity. part of this is because people are out and about and enjoying
6:39 am
their summer. but there's also another reason it is a master masquerader. i mean, it just continues to find new ways to develop, you know, ways to evade the immune system. and so as these new variants come out and they are just a little bit different than previous strains, it's harder for our body to fight them. so now the covid booster for the fall is in the works. and it should be tailored to the variants that are really spiking at the time, kind of the way that we see the development of the flu vaccine. but the vaccine that you have right now should already protect you. the doctor says, from severe symptoms and from hospitalization and long covid, we have seen more people going to the hospital recently than in the past. the symptoms are relatively the same a cough, nasal congestion, headache, body aches. some people are also feeling some abdominal trouble as well. but the best thing you
6:40 am
can do is protect yourself. remember to wash your hands if you're in a crowded area, say the airport or on a train, and you don't know what people's status is, or you see somebody that maybe doesn't look fully well, you can always mask up. no one will hold it against you. and as ginger knows, the kids are out and about. so we have to remind them to wash their hands as well. absolutely. you have to remind a lot of those adults to wash their hands. that's true. that's true. all right. thanks, chris. now a lieu a new legal ruling, i should say, is reportedly giving oakland the power to start clearing a small homeless encampment as soon as tomorrow. that camp is located on the coastline next to the bay bridge toll plaza. now, the city argues it violates state environmental law, the east bay times reports a federal judge agreed with that yesterday, ruling that the sweep can move forward homeless advocates call this one of the first legal

6:49 am
new york. it shows a correlation between the declining one's credit score and a drop in one's cognitive health. this eventually brought me to talk with neil shaw, ceo of career health technologies. now, some of the teams with neil's health care platform are actively collaborating with large research institutions around the country. some of them, you see there, and they're discovering ways that this type of data along with ai and related technologies, can be used to help develop tools for detection and diagnosis of potentially oncoming age related conditions. interestingly enough, we get a lot of referrals from financial advisors. you know, who are the first line of defense, against somebody, seeing cognitive decline by changes in spending patterns, changes in investment patterns. you know, we think the financial scores and credit scores, should be part of a multi-modal, ai detection to help people with, screening and kind of predicting cognitive decline and then taking actions accordingly so they don't make mistakes that are disastrous for their financial future. so that's a technology research site. but the other part of
6:50 am
neil's criteria is the matchmaking service we're talking about. it's sort of a pairing those in need of elder care, perhaps with those who would benefit from performing the actual care. so in the bay area through cal fire, you can go to the site, book online, in less than two minutes and you will get a wonderful pre-health careers college student from berkeley, stanford, san francisco state, san jose state, you know, depending on where you are, one of these wonderful universities, to come and help you for 20 bucks an hour. so half the cost of traditional care, way more convenient and faster to book. and in my opinion, way higher quality of care. you know, these students aren't just doing it for the money, but they really want the experience towards future clinical careers. so kind of a symbiotic relationship there. kerry boasts a network of over 18,000 such young professionals looking to match with those who are in need. so the students in turn, they get paid, of course, but they also get real life patient experience as they move toward their goal of actually helping people in real life, in the health care field. now, this area of health care, the elder

care we're talking about age related conditions and changes. this is what i think is huge. and neil told me, in fact, that he has numbers. we're looking at 29 million of us in what's called the sandwich generation. many of us know what we're talking about directly, where we take both care of the younger folks who are in need as well as those who are older. so we're sandwiched in between and the need continues to grow. and they're looking to use this technology we're talking about, as well as more data in new ways. so i think this could be great. it's the future, i think, because of this emerging population that's just got more need and the emerging technologies. yeah, i was going to say, if you're in that sandwich generation, make sure you eat because you gotta take care of yourself. you got to take care of yourself. all of that. you definitely miss some meals. take care of yourself. that celebration. yeah. care of lots of people. we are celebrating. yeah that's so pretty. it's so you. ginger recently celebrated her birthday, and we just wanted to say thank you for being you. and

morning? still looking at the slower drive here for westbound 24. it extends. it starts just after the walnut creek interchange in through lafayette and approaching saint stephens as far as i know, that big rig is still in the slow lane, but still only one of four lanes are blocked and the crash at willow has cleared from the upper east shore freeway. everything else operates pretty normally. back to you. thank you. mike happening now. south lake tahoe is implementing new measures to protect homes from wildfires. now starting today, the city has banned plants and furniture from being placed five feet from homes. now that includes combustible vegetation like bushes, flowers and pine needles, as well as items like sheds and hot tubs. mature trees will still be allowed, but low hanging branches would have to be cut. now there is a grace period right now, but violators will eventually be cited and fined. this all comes as the state of california considers the same statewide ban. and a look at our top stories this morning. breaking news out of vallejo, a late night deadly shooting and sobering details
