we're just about one week out from the start of the paris olympics. >> today we're catching one an olympic icon, three-time gold medalist gabby douglas, of course immediate history when she became the first black gymnast to win an olympic title at the 2012 games in london.
12:46 pm
>> now, she's working on a new project with ancestry to analyze something called performance traits. starting today you can analyze yours and compare them with olympic athletes. >> gabby, thank you for making time. >> thank you so much for having me. >> of course, i do want to start with your comeback, you returned to gymnastics after an eight-year hiatus, unfortunately you did have to end your bid to paris because of an ankle injury back in may, your road to the olympics isn't over yet. talk to us about that. >> i'm feeling okay, my ankle is slowly but surely getting there. i'm doing a lot of rehab, lot of icing, i do a lot of prp shots.
12:47 pm
lot of rehab, bittersweet for me to end the journey but i have learned a lot, it was very fun for me to get back in the gym, to see how long it took to get my feel back and get out there and compete was very fun. i'm looking forward to getting back in the gym, right now it's like rest time and offseason, looking forward to getting back in the gym, looks like. >> speaking of the future, i have to ask you about your history a little bit, 2012, three gold medals, part of the fierce five team, when you look back at that what was that like to be a part of such a legendary team. >> it's very special. so grateful that i've been a part of two amazing teams. it was very fun. the process leading up was very hard. lot of hard work and doing the same thing over and over again.
12:48 pm
just to be out on -- just to be exposed and to be out on a big stage was very, very -- i can't put it into words -- like i said, so grateful to be a part of 2012 and 2016. >> you're always so busy. you have a new project with ancestry, it analyzes your performance traits. walk us through what that looks like for you, what did you find in your discovery in. >> i mean, you may be a sprinter, if you take the test you'll know further. i was always wondering if my gymnastics talent, my flexibility came from dna or does it come from training and thanks to ancestry it's a little bit of both, it was very cool to see the breakdown of the all the traits i had and i was shocked to see i don't have the
12:49 pm
balance -- i don't have -- i can't focus that well, very interesting to see, which makes sense, i've always had to work very hard to focus, to become good on the balance beam, but i was happy to see that i did have the flexibility, good heart rate, good recovery, so that works in my favor. >> it's so interesting that you didn't have balance. how is that possible. i guess maybe -- >> i know. >> that means you worked really, really hard. you trained really hard to give yourself that balance. >> yes. >> i want to ask you the big question that's part of this project when it comes to genes and athletes, is it traits that you're born or training? do you think it's combo, what do you think? >> i think it's a combo, every athlete across the board you're born with a talent and natural flexibility also too you have to work hard to get other i would
12:50 pm
say other areas in your career. >> i love that. any final messages, maybe someone's out there i don't have the genes for it or stamina for it. i could never be a gabby. >> definitely purchase the ancestry dna kit and see what you're working with. you can compare your traits to see how you stack up against me, other athletes, why not give it a try? >> gabby douglas, great to have you, looking forward to the olympics next week. thank you so much. >> thank you guys. >> thank you guys. this is what joint pain looks like. when you keep moving with aleve. [coughing] copd hasn't been pretty. it's tough to breathe and tough to keep wondering if this is as good as it gets. but trelegy has shown me that there's still beauty and breath to be had. because with three medicines in one inhaler, trelegy keeps my airways open and prevents future flare-ups. and with one dose a day, trelegy improves lung function so i can breathe more freely all day and night. trelegy won't replace a rescue inhaler for sudden breathing problems. tell your doctor if you have a heart condition or high blood pressure before taking it. do not take trelegy more than prescribed. trelegy may increase your risk of thrush, pneumonia, and osteoporosis. call your doctor if worsened breathing, chest pain, mouth or tongue swelling, problems urinating, vision changes, or eye pain occur. ♪ what a wonderful world ♪
