conejero saab. laura garcia is off, and i'm marcus washington. we begin with breaking news. a massive it outage has hit airports, businesses and media groups around the world. it started last night and continues into this morning. now that impact widespread with flights grounded around the globe and banks getting hit as well. that issue affecting microsoft windows. well, here's what we know so far. the problem is tied to an upgrade of the crowdstrike cloud based cybersecurity system. crowdstrike is now confirming that and says this is not a cyber attack. microsoft says problems to its cloud based services were restored early this morning, but many companies are still reporting issues worldwide, including airlines, banks and, yes, media companies here at nbc bay area, the overnight hours were challenging, to say the least, but we are back and running normally. this meltdown already being called unprecedented. yeah, one industry being hit

especially hard. commercial aviation here is live. look at sfo this morning. now the largest u.s. airlines issued ground stops citing communication issues leading to long nights at airports around the globe. today in the bay's jocelyn moran spoke with sfo passengers who were affected. a frustrating night and morning for passengers at san francisco international airport. i know management is in a meeting right now on the screens. blue recovery messages at terminal three sfo confirming it experienced an airport wide tech issue. laurie and alexander landed from denver and were waiting at the tarmac for an hour before being allowed to get off the plane, and now we're waiting for our bags for another hour. yeah, they said. sfo has a problem with their software. of course, the pilot doesn't know that it's everywhere else. major airlines, media organizations, businesses and police forces around the world were affected by a massive it glitch caused by a problem with microsoft cloud computing services. we couldn't even check our bags. our bags are right there. they, we

couldn't even go in the kiosk. casey and his family were planning on going to belize for a family reunion. around 50 of them from the bay area and other parts of the state, and country were supposed to be flying out. minnesota west virginia, a couple other states. they were supposed to be leaving tonight, but nobody's leaving tonight. some passengers were stuck at what was supposed to just be their layover, and others were local and have decided to cancel their flights altogether. asher holmes was supposed to be taking a weekend trip to new york for her best friend's mom's funeral. i'm just kind of remove myself from the equation and just going to go back home because by the time they get it rebooked and it would probably be later and i'll miss everything at sfo. jocelyn moran, nbc, bay area news now earlier this morning, american airlines released its ground stop, posting on x saying, quote, a technical issue with a vendor impacted multiple carriers, including american. as of 5 a.m. eastern time, we have been able to safely reestablish our operation. we apologize to our customers for the

inconvenience. well crowdstrike is taking responsibility for the worldwide outages this morning, and our kris sanchez live for us outside their sunnyvale office. and, chris, i mean, certainly a shakeup for the morning, definitely not the way you want to start the morning or in our case, the way you want to end your night. but we do know and we want to reiterate what the crowdstrike ceo is saying, which is that this is not a security incident. this is not a cyber attack, because often that's the first thing that comes to mind. let's get right to the statement that he issued overnight on x, crowdstrike is actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update for windows hosts. this is not a security incident or a cyber attack. the issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed. but with that one update, there were so many

impacts to microsoft's 365 apps and also the azure service. it took major airlines, as you mentioned, media organizations like ours, even police forces offline around the world early friday evening. here's how one cybersecurity expert explained it to us this morning about the impact that's so widespread. if there is a mistake happening here, it's cascaded because the nature of the cloud is you don't do it computer by computer. what you do is you deploy it to all the computers at the same time. so if this software and update there is a problem with it, or it's conflicting, this is what's going to happen. so we also asked him what to do if you are impacted. obviously if you can't get into your computer, if you get that blue screen that we, so many of us got overnight, you'll have to communicate with your, boss and let them know that you

can't access what you need to work. but likely your boss already knows, we also know that this should be going back onlin. things should be getting back to normal at some point now because they are rolling out that fix. it's been deployed. the fix is in the works. however, it's going to take some time because this impact was so widespread in sunnyvale. kris sanchez today in the bay that it was thank you chris. well, scott mcgrew has been talking with as many people as he can, given how early it i. scott, you've been waking people up this morning. now markets are are they expected to open? as far as we can tell, i can't get anyone to say they're not going to. and neither the nasdaq nor the nyse has said anything special instructions or anything to investors. obviously shares in crowdstrike not going to do well today. they're down pre-market okay. if you're at home, grab a phone because in a second i'm going to show you a suggested fix that crowdstrike has posted. we can't show it forever, so you can take a

picture of it. this is what my workstation looked like this morning. and this may be what your computer workstation looks like this morning. mac computers don't seem to be affected at all. this is a windows issue. the other thing we depend on home internet power, stoplights, iphones, google cloud, gmail, generally speaking, all seem to be fine, or at least they are in the south bay, new york city talking about problems with mass transit, fast pass. but bart is reporting no problems so far. we are monitoring that. i personally stopped it at chase atm on my way into work. i was able to access my account. i withdrew 20 bucks just to test it. if you're traveling, if you're working at a network company using windows computers, you may have trouble today. all right, here's that. fix that. crowdstrike engineers have posted on social media. if you're not super familiar with computers, if you don't need your computer right this second, you can wait for an automated patch. but if time is of the

essence, you're at home, you've got a presentation, you've got to make this morning. you can boot into safe mode on or windows recovery environment that honestly should come up as an option automatically. and then you'll go to your c drive. this is the part we'll need to be taking a picture of the file directory there. and then there's a file this is the bad guy. according to crowdstrike engineers see dash 50291 star dot cis. you delete that file and reboot again. this is if you are super familiar with this kind of procedure, and time is of the total essence. crowdstrike ceo spoke early on the today show with this explanation. the system, was sent an update, and that update had a software bug in it and caused a, an issue with the microsoft operating system. and we identified this very quickly and remediated the issue. and as systems come back online, as they're rebooted, they're coming up and they're working. and now we are working with each and every customer to make sure that

we can bring them back online. well, looking at that with dylan, with customers, scott, look, clearly this company is widespread. a lot of people use it, but i'm sure most people haven't heard of it. no, it's good company. i mean obviously everyone's angry at them this morning the number of times. and again, this is the file system apparently said 281 on error. but it is two night one is your is your file number. it's a good company, and the number of times they have protected you from bad things happening that you've been completely unaware of certainly outweighs, right? outweighs what's happening now. they're working on it as quickly as they can. we'll get more understanding as to what exactly happened, but obviously this is a catastrophe both for the company and for places around the world. i've been texting people, as you said, you know, trying to wake them up. and of course, they're the first they know about it. right? right, but we have been talking to the east coast. some hospitals are having trouble with their, their charting systems, not their. you know, not the machines that keep

even through san francisco, barely any fog cover out there mid 50s and up into the north bay. a bit of a chillier start in santa rosa at 51 degrees. we are busy here in the weather center. we have the heat advisory that's in place until 11 p.m. tonight. these areas shaded in orange for you. we're going to see some 90s, some low one hundreds. but i can offer a little bit of good news to get the weekend started a few degrees cooler. we're going to push those those numbers back just a little bit before we launch into next week. even more hotter temperatures are on the way, so i'll guide you through the full microclimate forecast. everything you need to know weather wise. but for now, mike, you're tracking a roadside fires. yeah, we had a couple reported. one was over here approaching the bridge. richmond center fell westbound five a it's at regatta flashing lights. don't worry. i believe that's just a crew much like these caltrans vehicles. there. we'll show you where the roadside fire was reported at around regatta. so coming off the east shore freeway haven't seen any

is restored. it was restored early this morning, but many companies are still reporting major problems. our other big story this morning, a pivotal night in the race for the white house. now, on the final night of the rnc, former president donald trump officially accepted the republican nomination and he got personal speaking for the first time publicly about the assassination attempt in pennsylvania. now, he wanted to send a message of confidence, strength and hope. and today, in the bay's gia vang reports, he had strong words for the biden administration. i'm proud to be an american. he walked out to lee greenwood's song god bless the usa with an image of what appeared to be the white house behind him who died, who gave that right to me tonight with faith and devotion, i proudly accept your nomination for president of the united states. president donald trump is now the official nominee for the

republican party, hoping for another four years as president before he laid out his vision, he first addressed the assassination attempt on his life that forced him to wear a bandage the entire convention in the swing state of wisconsin, and kissing the helmet of the firefighter who died at his pennsylvania rally, moved my right hand to my ear, brought it down. my hand was covered with blood, just absolutely blood all over the place. i immediately knew it was very serious that we were under attack. eyes were glued to the tv at this cow hollow bar, the watch party put on by the sf gop party. he almost died and that was way too close. and to see him standing there was very moving for me and these modern times with modern security, modern secret service, it's just unthinkable that this could happen. trump then made a call for unity in an age when our politics too often divide us, now is the time to remember that we are all fellow citizens.

by the water. i offer you even some more cooling for your sunday, so take that and run with it before we heat up once again into next week, that desert heat is going to start pushing back into the state and bumping up those temperatures, at least for the first half of the week. so we might start to shift our work plans. day camp plans. as we look at livermore, we are looking at a heat spike for today, the weekend we push those numbers back. look at that drastic change. we go back into the 80s and then into next week. we climb those numbers back up into the low one hundreds and we're kind of on a roller coaster here. look, at the end of next week, we are looking at a change. as soon as we heat up, we are cooling things down once again into the 80s. as we go on into the second half of the wee. so we are on a bit of a bumpy ride. of course, with technology, with the temperatures. but we look at san francisco. if you are looking for some relief, we are going to be staying in the 70s. mild weather models were telling me

for sfo. are waking up this morning a long way from their destination. they're actually in siberia, but another plane is now on its way to get them. now the air india flight took off yesterday from mumbai, but the crew soon detected a problem in the cargo hold. a problem that we should point out. it's completely unrelated to the. it meltdown. that plane was then diverted to russia. the airline is working with a third party to assist the 225 passengers until the replacement plane lands within the next few hours. can you imagine someone calling you and saying, hey, i'm here to pick you up where are you? right, well, and imagine just the scare, you know, when you're riding on that plane and you have to be diverted, you don't really know exactly what's going on. especially a country had no intention to go to. so check that off the bucket list. at least everyone is safe. yes. all right. it is 527 for you this morning. next, the top stories. we're following here today including that global it outage

widespread. many times you're going to find some of the companies they they will have an update, and then they pull it back by saying it's created more problem. it solves some and created more problems. what happened here is the impact is immediate because this is real time services. so if you want to do an update, you have to be super careful about what you do with. now we did ask him, you know what what the actual issue could be. he said it could be anything with cloud computing because the push goes out at the same time. that's why it's so widespread. but the mistake could be human error. it could be data entry, it could be sending the wrong patch along. so we also asked, is it prudent for companies to be so dependent on one particular service like microsoft cloud? and he said that it's just kind of the way of the world right now. there are there is competition. there are other companies, but certainly a lot of companies will likely be thinking about

hear about them is they are working so hard in the background to make everything work just fine, and so there are lots of situations. here's when the ipod on the nasdaq, a bunch of very hard working people, you don't hear about them because they're protecting you from things that you'll never notice. but in this case, we don't know why chris touched on this. we don't know why this bad patch came out, but it is indeed bad. and we'll get some answers from crowdstrike as to how that happened. yeah, but for now, that's the solution. or wait for your it guy or woman. yeah and get it taken care of that. yeah. when you showed the code there i'm like, yeah, i'll just have to wait. i don't even know what that means. you know, if you got a presentation at 9 a.m. for the in front of the whole board of directors, you may need to try that. my question is a 20 bucks that you took out from the atm this morning. it didn't go through the it didn't go through the drive through coffee shop. that's true. i didn't yet they're not open yet. jeez. all right. now it's a busy morning. there's a lot of things to watch out for. all right. thanks god. all right, so let's turn now to

that impact this morning over at airports from this historical outage today in the base thom jensen live for us over at sfo. and tom, this morning we saw some of those passengers just sitting and waiting. have they been able to get back on board or what's the deal? this morning there. good morning marcus. as you can see at the american airlines departure area here. and baggage check in area, it is cleared out a lot. it was really backed up earlier. we were seeing a lot of issues. there's still a lot of delays and cancellations that folks are dealing with who got caught up in this. so they're going to still be dealing with that throughout the day. but as far as checking bags and getting people through the departure gates and through security, that all seems to be working now. we've been keeping a close eye. it has been a nightmare for folks, though, who got caught right in the middle of this on the flight screens here at sfo. blue recovery messages were on all of the screens screens overnight, confirming the airport had system wide tech issues. that's gotten a lot better. we're seeing a lot of the screens back up now. sfo officials confirmed they were part of the global software

glitch, and that will go down as one of the biggest failures in it history. we talked to people who landed this morning and got caught right in the middle of it. they waited on the tarmac to get off their flight for an hour, and then they headed to baggage, where they had to wait for more than an hour to get their bags. others ran into issues trying to check bags for outgoing flights. they said sfo has a problem with their software. of course, the pilot doesn't know that it's everywhere else. we couldn't even check our bags. our bags are right there. they, we couldn't even go in the kiosk. we received a lot of statements from major us airlines confirming the technical issues, including american saying that they're working with vendors, working with their own it staffs, trying to work through the bugs. they've worked through a lot of them now, i've been reading a lot of the same issues on news sources globally, reporting the same issues everywhere from sydney to heathrow, heathrow across the globe. talked to one man from sydney here this morning. said he came in last night, was stuck overnight. he can't fly out now

upper 80s this afternoon. but of course, the story for heat isn't only in tahoe, but in the bay area as well. we start our planner in danville, low 60s throughout the morning to 70s by nine. a m 10 a.m. into the noon hour. we are warming to those nearly 90 degrees there and into the afternoon. the hottest part of the day, three, four, 5:00 i'm putting you near 100 degrees now. this will be the hottest day of the week, even on into dinnertime and into the rest of our friday night plans. we are looking at some really scorching temperatures in our inland valleys. but there is better news, less of those warmer temperatures for the weekend. here but into next week we are looking at another heat spike. i'll be back with those details in a bit. mike. we usually predict lighter traffic early on friday. yes today is according to prediction right here. westbound 37. just like we talk about the patterns of same right but lighter traffic flow. no big deal. we're looking at some

slowing just starting on the incline for the bay bridge. the metering lights should be turned on any minute, probably in a couple of minutes because a little bit later on a friday usually as well. this is just starting to clear. we had slowing because of a late pickup, i believe for the construction zone on 680 pleasanton now smoothing out in your commute direction southbound and no major issues. the volume out of the altamont pass. great. a disabled vehicle reported eastbound on the san mateo bridge coming from the peninsula. no major problems, but i'm tracking that. let's talk about something that may be going on for your delays for the vta system. you've seen this for the last couple of days. second day in a row, in fact, that they're working on the orange and the green lines for certain sections of that light rail project. so there will be a bus bridge in place. the bus station is right next to the vta station, so you should be fine. just might present a little change to your schedule vta. org and then this weekend you'll have a delay here for the muni system because they're working on that twin peaks tunnel project. they do this every few weekends as they work on that today. this weekend we'll have west portal and forest hill

upgrade of the crowdstrike cloud based cybersecurity system. it's impacting airlines, banks, and businesses as well as microsoft windows computers everywhere. microsoft says the issue was restored early this morning. american and delta airlines have resumed service, while others are still working to get back u. on to some other news history made last night in milwaukee as donald trump was nominated the republican presidential candidate for the third time in a row. scott mcgrew joining us this morning with that. and scott, this was an extraordinary moment as the former president describing that attempt on his the assassination attempt on his life. yeah. and we often talk about political theater. right. but that seems like the wrong term in this case. it was dramatic, but none of it was disingenuous. the crowd absolutely electric as trump came out onto the stage. miramar park costa mesa texas from sea to shining sea. trump started

ignore the pressure? now i'm standing here talking to you, but behind the scenes at nbc, there are dozens or hundreds of people working on getting that answer. and marcus, we expect a development or developments to come quite soon. absolutely. all right. scott mcgrew, for us, this morning, scott. thank you. well, some south bay leaders, they're trying to deliver a message to the u.s. postal service, do more to protect people's mail. san jose representative jimmy panetta and council member domingo candelas. they actually held a news conference in the evergreen neighborhood yesterday. they stood beside a community mailbox, targeted by thieves dozens of times. panetta says that that mail service has changed the locks, but it is not enough. with mail theft increasing 87% since the pandemic and violent crime against mail carriers doubling. let's be serious those locks will only last as long as the until the next mail carrier gets

robbed of the key. panetta is prompting his by bipartisan mail theft act. it would increase coordination between local and federal authorities while investigating crimes. he also is calling for the usps to replace conventional locks with electric keys and for postal officers to patrol those streets to protect mail carriers. community leaders in east oakland are organizing a day of action this morning. now it's focused on ending the cycle of violence in one specific area between 82nd and 90th avenues. it's now an annual event that first started in 2022. now, advocates call this an area beset by problems, including homelessness, illegal dumping, open air drug markets and even traffic related issues. that event gets underway at 10 a.m. at the black cultural zone welcome center on international boulevard, and updating you on our breaking news this morning. that global i.t. outage impacting industries around the world. more specifically, it's

impacting computers that run on microsoft windows. well, the issue is tied to an upgrade for crowdstrike cybersecurity software, which the company has since pulled back. but it is still having a huge ripple effect. flights are grounded, bank operations are being slowed down, and media groups are trying to recover. now we'll have the latest developments at the top of the next hour. watch out for that. it is a very busy friday morning for us here at today the bay, but it is friday and it is shaping up to be a beautiful day and possibly a beautiful weekend. right, cynthia? yeah, today we are starting off mostly clear around the bay area. a nice start behind me along 101 in palo alto, previewing what will be some sunny skies and also some hot temperatures. hottest day of this week will be today. we are looking at triple digits for parts of martinez, concord, livermore, down into morgan hill, santa rosa as well and the north bay wine country going to get pretty toasty up there, so drink lots of water with that. a

glass of wine out there. we are looking at temperatures by the bay, also fairly warm. 76 in san francisco, 87 in oakland and palo alto. and we are going to do some low 70s out in half moon bay. i also want you to be aware of what's going on across the state. we are dealing with some wildfires out there, which is going to bring some of that unhealthy air moderate through most of the bay area, actually. so if you're sensitive to those changes to the heat, just find ways to take care of yourself for the next couple of days. now, as we go on into the weekend, i offer a bit of good news to you is if you don't like the hottest day of the week today we are going to pull those numbers back just a little bit. saturday and sunday, but prepare for what it says up there. heating up again into next week as that desert heat just blankets the state. you can see those contours there in the dark reds and even some purples. we are warming things up as we start our next workweek. 70s and 80s by the bay, 90s as we make our way into the valleys, the

hills, and even some triple digits into parts of the greater area into tuesday, i think this will be the hottest day of the upcoming workweek, with some 90s 100 still remaining on the board. the peninsula also getting very warm and into wednesday a bit cooler. a bit, emphasis on a bit, but that heat will continue as we look at 102 in concord to 100 in morgan hill, san francisco. not included in the heat advisory or the upcoming heat alerts that could be issued, but still fairly mild in the city, with some 70s continuing for the next couple of days. mike, you say the bay bridge metering lights have been activated. they have been activated and a bit more slowing. just a bit. we're talking about that as well for the bay bridge. no backup visible on the camera. a little slowing on the incline. so very manageable for the volume. but they did activate those lights. highway 37 shows slowing, but highway four does not. so again, light traffic throughout contra costa county and still a little bit of slowing south. 680 after the late pickup for the crew
