6:00 am
conejero saab. laura garcia is off, and i'm marcus washington begins with a very busy friday morning that breaking news a massive it outage has hit airports, businesses and media groups around the world. this
6:01 am
started last night, continuing into the morning, with that impact being widespread. banks are also getting hit by this. now that issue affecting microsoft windows, here's what we know. the problem is tied to an upgrade of the crowdstrike cloud based cybersecurity system. crowdstrike is now confirming that and says this is not a cyber attack attack. rather, microsoft says problems to its cloud based services were restored early this morning, and while some systems are recovering, many companies are still reporting some issues, including airlines, banks and yes, even media companies here at nbc bay area. the overnight hours were challenging, to say the least, and this meltdown has already been called unprecedented. yeah one industry being hit especially hard. aviation. want to give you a live look this morning over at sfo now, the largest u.s. airline issued groups issued those ground stops citing communication issues leading to the long nights at airports around the globe. today in the
6:02 am
bay's thom jensen. live for us this morning over at sfo. and tom, talk to us about what you've been seeing this morning. seems like more and more as the morning goes along. more people are being back to somewhat normal. good morning marcus and ginger. yeah, getting back to normal for the most part. here you can see people are moving through the departure gates and the checking in their baggage. here at the american counters, american is one of the airlines that had issues along with united and delta. they all sent a statement talking about some of the it issues. and overnight, though, it was a major ordeal, the flight screens here at sfo had those blue recovery messages on them confirming the airport had system wide tech issues. those, most of those reader boards are back up now. we only saw one that was down earlier. sfo officials confirmed they were part of the global software glitch that will go down as one of the biggest it failures in history. we talked to people who landed this morning and got caught right in the middle of it. some waited on the tarmac
6:03 am
for an hour and before they were able to deplane. then they had to wait for their baggage for another hour before they could get their luggage to party. and passengers struggled with checking bags, facing delays and cancellations. one woman who needed to get to a funeral in new york told us she finally gave up. just kind of removed myself from the equation and just going to go back home because by the time they get it rebooked and it would probably be later and i'll miss everything. we couldn't even check our bags. our bags are right there. they, we couldn't even go in the kiosk. we received a variety of statements, like i said, from most of the major us airlines, confirming the technical issues. we got updated statements saying that they're working through most of them now from delta american and united. and we are seeing that people are able to check their bags. i've been reading about the same issues on news sources around the globe. in fact, i even talked to one man from sydney this morning who came in. he got stuck overnight. he's he was supposed to fly into dallas early this morning. he's
6:04 am
not going to be able to fly out of sfo till tonight. now, the faa said it's also, closely monitoring the technical issues helping airlines. faa said airlines requested help from the agency with ground stops. that means that they're helping them control the flights, slow the flights until they work through all these bugs like we said, it looks like they are working through the bugs. we're hearing that they're getting through most of the it issues. and as i also said, we're looking at the departure and arrival boards. they're all back up online, though. we are looking at a lot of cancellations and a lot of delays on the boards, as people get up and they're coming to the airport if they have to travel, they want to go to want to check with their airlines because even though they're back up, because of the delays and cancellations, getting the aircraft in here, getting aircraft back out, people are still going to face some delays and possibly even cancellations later on today. so it's best if you check with the airline, check with the airport before you do come. we're live
6:05 am
at sfo thom jensen today in the bay. all right, tom, thank you. well, crowdstrike is taking responsibility for the worldwide outages this morning. today in the bay's kris sanchez live for us outside of the company's sunnyvale office. so, kris, what can you tell us? so very quick to take responsibility, but also very quick to point out that this was not a security issue and not a cyber threat. this was an issue related to a software update. here's how the ceo of crowdstrike described it on the today show this morning. the system, was sent an update, and that update had a software bug in it and caused a, an issue with the microsoft operating system. and we identified this very quickly and remediated the issue. and as systems come back online, as they're rebooted, they're coming up and they're working. and now we are, working with each and every customer to make sure that we can bring them back online. so as that,
6:06 am
crowdstrike ceo says things should be getting back to norma. but if your system has not gotten back to normal and your work is mission critical this morning, you're going to want to listen for scott mcgrew. he has a fix for you now, but that one software update impacted microsoft's 365 apps and azure services, the cloud computing service. it took major airlines, media organizations, police departments offline around the world early friday evening. now, we did talk with one cybersecurity expert this morning who explained why this was so widespread. if there is a mistake happening here, it's cascaded because the nature of the cloud is you don't do it computer by computer. what you do is you deploy it to all the computers at the same time. so if this software or an update there is a problem with it, or it's conflicting, this is what's going to happen. so if it's a problem with cloud computing, maybe you're wondering is this a
6:07 am
problem that we depend so highly upon it and that there are so few companies that offer it? the professor says we're not getting away from the cloud. it's here to stay. as we saw during the pandemic, it made it possible for the world to keep moving even as the world was shut down. but some companies may be having some serious conversations today about a backup plan in case this happens again by the way, we asked what this, glitch or this little problem could be, and the professor said it could be simple as human error, maybe just even entering the data in wrong. in sunnyvale, kris sanchez, today in the bay, once number or one letter off, it messes everything up. it's happened to all of us. yeah, well, chris mentioned there that scott mcgrew has a fix for you here this morning. i do. i know you've been really busy reaching out to people, even in the early morning hours, and finding out as well that not just airports, banks, but also hospitals, hospitals reporting problems. as far as we can tell, these are not with the mission critical systems that keep people alive, but rather with charting systems
6:08 am
and fixes that, that that charts the or follows the pills in the prescriptions, that kind of stuff. you know, they've done this sort of thing on paper before nurses and doctors, and they're doing it. now. if you are at home, do grab your phone because that fix that i'm going to suggest it's kind of complicated. we can't show it on television forever. you can take a picture of it, but as far as i can tell, the things that we depend on, at least in the south bay so far in this early hour, internet power, stoplights, iphones, gmail all seem to be working fine. new york city talking about problems with mass transit there. fast pass. but bart, no problem. i did stop. i mentioned earlier at a chase atm to pull out a test 20 bucks and that worked just fine. it accessed my account, but take a look at my work station this morning. this is what i came into work as. your work station may look similar mac computers don't seem to be affected at all. is a windows issue. so airlines coming back online as marcus and ginger mentioned, some of those planes may still
6:09 am
be out of position. east coast mass transit seems to be having trouble with ticketing as i mentioned, but our mass transit, mike says, is okay so far. okay, that fix that crowdstrike engineers have posted on social media. if you're not familiar with computers, if you don't need your computer right this second, you can wait for the automated patch. but if time is of the essence, boot into safe mode on the windows recover recovery environment and that should come up as an option automatically. you're going to go to your c drive. and then this is the part you'll need the picture of that file directory. and then the file c-50291 star dot c s for system. delete that file and reboot. this is if you're super familiar with this sort of thing. you got a presentation in your computer. it's locked up in there. you know, you got you got an hour before you got to give it. we have no indication from the markets, by the way, the nyse, the nasdaq that they won't open on regular time, but we will
6:10 am
know shortly. crowdstrike, one of those companies that's very familiar to investors into computer network people, but not a household name. they work behind the scenes stopping bad things from happening. ideally, you never have to concern yourself with them, but right now they are. perhaps everyone's least favorite company, at least for this morning. it seems like this is the type of company that the less you hear about it, the better. because you know, absolutely doing everything behind the scenes as it should. yes, it's kind of like your adt alarm, right? when it's beeping and doing something weird. you're angry at it, but the rest of the time it's, you know, taking care of things behind the scenes. speaking of that, i know i use my adt app to try to look at a camera. yeah. how did that app work? it didn't it didn't load up until this. well, when i got to work i checked and it was so i don't know if that was a part of the system. it wasn't attached to the phone itself. it was their own app. right? i don't know, it's worth checking your apps if you've got something like you expecting to get an uber ride check. that's true. well, that's the other thing is i took uber down and it
6:11 am
took a long time to process connect with the driver. so i think, you know, aside from the bigger kind of microsoft, the companies that use microsoft, the massive impact you may have some smaller problems just a little ripple effect. yeah, right. just playing a little more time for things. yes i know all right. thanks for that fix though. yeah. all right look we will keep you updated on all what's happening with this breaking news throughout the day. don't forget we are on for you 24/7. whenever you need us, we are there. we are streaming on roku, pluto tv, as well as nbcbayarea.com. well, scott mentioned it. it is friday and it is 610 on this friday morning. still taking a live look at san jose this morning with that marine cloud layer. is that right? i don't think it made its way quite down here to the south bay. no, but san francisco, we see the fog right there just blocking the golden gate bridge towers. careful with those changes in visibility. mild in dublin and san jose. low 60s, but up into the north bay. petaluma at 50 degrees. but
6:12 am
don't worry. a warmth is on the way. we check in in cupertino in our day planner, a mid to upper 60s. by 8 a.m, 7010 low 80s by your lunch time hours. so if you want to get out and enjoy that, please do. but into the afternoon, find ways to keep yourself cool. we're going to go into the 90s down here in cupertino and really the rest of the bay area. seeing the hottest day of the week today. the weekend. a short cool down before we go into next week and some sizzling temperatures return. i'll show you the full details coming up. mike, we want to pay attention to payments for commute, right scott mcgrew did talk about the metro being an issue over on the east coast. we have heard of no problems with the clipper card or with the bay area toll authorities. fast track system here. so we're going to assume everything's moving smoothly because we haven't heard about any problems there. of course, if they are owed any payments, they will be able to collect that from you remotely. over here, the richmond bridge, there was a disabled vehicle that just cleared seconds ago. so good stuff flowing through the area
6:13 am
eastbound. a minor fender bender reported mid span and i haven't heard about it clearing. i haven't seen any slowing either. haven't seen a lot of slowing here for highway 37 and highway four behind me. no problems through contra costa county. very light. typical friday issue. we do have a minor car fire reported near the caldecott tunnel. i'm going to get more detail once chp gets on scene. we hope that tunnel stays clear because it's clear right now. northbound 101 a minor slowing shows up in a typical area where we'd expect this. now it's 610, so the volume is easing up a little bit right now. 612, i should say. and things are starting to move a little better. it'll build up again over the next half hour. back to you. all right. good to know. thanks, mike. now we will continue to follow our breaking news as businesses try to recover from the massive it outage affecting microsoft windows plus. former president trump accepting the republican party nomination, his first detailed public response to saturday's
6:14 am
hey, flex. considering there's a heatwave, it's kinda chilly in here. oh, that's because i'm pre-cooling the house with the ac before 4 pm. then i'll turn our thermostat to a comfortable 78 or higher that way i could stay cool later. ooh, what about me? you're never cool. oh.
6:15 am
6:16 am
groups around the world that impact widespread flights are grounded, banks getting hit as well, and we here at today in the bay had a long night trying to recover that problem tied to an upgrade of the crowdstrike cloud based cybersecurity syste. it's impacting microsoft computers everywhere, and while crowdstrike has now pulled back the software update, that problem persists and there's
6:17 am
more breaking news just coming into our newsroom. amidst mounting pressure to drop out the biden campaign insists the president will stay on the ticket despite reports he's considering dropping out now. a new campaign memo obtained by nbc says in part there is no plan for an alternative nominee in a few short weeks, joe biden will be the official nominee. now, that statement comes after a pivotal night in the race for the white house, donald trump delivering his first major address since saturday's assassination attempt in pennsylvania today in the bay's brie jackson, is in milwaukee. this is where the republican national convention wrapping up with trump accepting that a nomination. former president donald trump formally accepting the 2024 republican nomination with faith and devotion. i proudly accept your nomination for president of the united states. the 78 year old, making

charged him with gathering secret information on orders from the cia. a lawyer for the wall street journal's publisher called the legal proceedings, quote, a sham. the u.s. government also condemned the charges early this morning. he was found guilty before being sentenced within the past hour. 619 as we take a live look out at the bay bridge looking over into san francisco, i mean, a beautiful start to the morning. the sun's coming up and that means the heat's coming on. not so much in san francisco, though, but certainly other parts of the bay area. we're going to see a warmer day. yeah, pretty mild in the city. and if we talk mild in the city, then, you know, our microclimates are temperatures start ramping up. so let's get a check right now. start right there in union city. good morning to you. upper 50s bright and sunny. lots of sunshine and warm temperatures on the way by noontime 80 degrees. and we're going to warm up very quickly in the east bay as we start our morning. and the south bay as well. i'm going to
6:21 am
put you at 90 in downtown to san jose 93 in the foothills, 98 in los gatos to 100 in morgan hill. so if you have day camp, your kids and you're sending your kids out there, make sure they have lots of water, shade and everything that's needed as well as if you work outside, might need to pull those hours back a little bit. 97 in martinez to 107 in concord, 100 in pleasanton and a bit of the sea breeze boost to keep things cooler along the shoreline in oakland. but still, those upper 80s for today, 68 in daly city to 85 in redwood city and still a very mild day in san francisco, where we see temperatures, seconds and 80s right there in the mission. of course, the concrete, the buildings amplify that heat, which will continue up into the north bay as well. wine country. we're going to do some 90s in sonoma and in napa, 101 as you make your way along 101 to santa rosa and that he continues into mendocino and lake counties. the marin county coastline, also looking at a stunning day out
6:22 am
there in point reyes at 78 degrees. i tell you what, the weekend we're going to pull those numbers down just a little bit. this will be a chance to kind of regroup after a long workweek with, of course, the heat, the tech outages. the weekend comes about. we go to mountain view for the obon festival at the buddhist temple. that will be a great event to celebrate the japanese culture. we're going to pull those numbers down in mountain view, just hovering under that 80 degree mark and slightly cooler for your sunday plans. but guess what? we ramp up the heat once again out into eastern cocoa county next week of course, mid 90s are still pretty warm, but we not compared to those low one hundreds that we're going to see as we go on into next week. and then look at that. the tail end of that, looking at a bit of a cooling trend as we go on into late week and just about everybody will see that. if you need some relief from the heat, though, stinson beach 80 degrees today to some comfortable 70s out there in marin county, the coastline that will be nice. and then the mid 60s into the end of
6:23 am
the next workweek. so just make sure to drink lots of water. staying fire weather aware these temperatures are running hot and the weekend there that bit of a break that we need. and san francisco staying mild in the 70s. mike what do we got for our friday light. you know well we have this i'd like it to stay like this for the rest of the week, but it's not going to. this is beautiful right here. the fog we expect. of course, this will burn off as kris as cynthia's showing us. crossing the bay will be will clear and warmer later on today. easy drive right now of north bay. visibility. not a surprise for folks traveling from the north bay here. a little slowing shows up. the metering lights are on, but no big backup at the toll plaza. light for the north bay. just a little slowing out of vallejo. i want to turn your attention to the caldecott tunnel. there is indeed a report of a car fire on the shoulder there near fish ranch road. it's outside the caldecott tunnel, just mild, slowing right at the scene. see the blip there? but really not a major concern there. or for the rest of the bay. south bay, easy drive right now. back to you. thanks a lot,
6:24 am
mike. well, we have a lot more ahead for you this morning as we continue to monitor t to

clearing homeless encampments. that's the word from mayor london breed, who made the comments yesterday during the latest debate. her remarks come weeks after the supreme court decision giving cities greater powers to remove the unhoused
6:27 am
from encampments. breed first outlined the steps san francisco has taken to provide housing, shelter and services. but then she went a step further. it hasn't been easy. in fact, thank goodness for the change in the supreme court decision, effective august. we are going to be very aggressive and assertive in moving encampments, which may even include criminal penalties. well, breed's office released a statement clarifying her comments, saying, quote, san francisco is a city that prioritizes compassion and will continue to lead with services, but we cannot allow people to refuse services when shelter is offered and available. homeless advocates are pushing back, saying a more aggressive approach will not fix homelessness but make the issue worse. well, passengers who took off on one flight yesterday bound for sfo are waking up this morning a long way from their destination. they are in siberia. yeah. so another plane
6:28 am
is now on its way to get them. the air india flight took off yesterday from mumbai, but that crew soon detected a problem in the cargo hold. now, we should note that that problem is completely unrelated to the it meltdown we've been talking about throughout the morning. the plane was then diverted to russia. the airline is working with a third party to assist the 225 passengers on board until the replacement plane lands within the next few hours. 627 this morning, next year, we're going to follow the top stories for you, including that global it outage where you may feel that impact as you start your day. airports filling it and of course we'll take you live to sfo to update you on flight delays and the impact on passengers who had a long night.

6:31 am
ginger conejero saab. laura garcia is off, and i'm marcus washington. we begin with some breaking news this morning. massive i.t. outage hitting businesses around the world. starting last night, continuing into the morning. flights are grounded and banks getting hit. that issue impacting commuters, computers that run on microsoft windows. well, the problem is tied to an upgrade of the crowdstrike cloud based cybersecurity system. crowdstrike is now confirming that and says this is not a cyber attack. microsoft says service was restored early this
6:32 am
morning, but many companies are still reporting issues today. in the bay's kris sanchez. she's live for us outside of the crowdstrike sunnyvale offices and kris, crowdstrike already taking responsibility here. yes, absolutely. very quick to say this was not a security incident. this was not a cyber attack, as you mentioned, but the ceo saying that this was an intention to upgrade the system and something went wrong. here's how he explained it this mornin. the system, was sent an update, and that update had a software bug in it and caused a, an issue with the microsoft operating system. and we identified this very quickly and remediated the issue. and as systems come back online, as they're rebooted, they're coming up and they're working. and now we are, working with each and every customer to make sure that we can bring them back online. now, the crowdstrike ceo said that it was, again, a single content update for windows hosts. the
6:33 am
issue has been identified, isolated, and the fix was deployed. now, the ceo says things should be getting back to normal, but if your system has not returned and your work is mission critical. this morning, scott mcgrew found a fix from crowdstrike engineers and i will post that for you in case you are one of those people who can make that happen. now that single update impacted microsoft's 365 apps and azure services. these are the cloud services it took major airlines, media organizations, even police forces offline around the world early friday evening. and we talked with a cybersecurity expert this morning who explained how this might have happened. many times you're going to find some of the companies, they they will have an update, and then they pull it back by saying it created more problem. it solved some and created more problems. what happened here is the impact is immediate because this is real time services. so if you want to do an update, you have to be
6:34 am
super careful about what you're doing. now we all depend on cloud services at this point. as a professor said, cloud is what made the world continue, even as we had to shut down during the coronavirus pandemic. now we have gotten reaction from law enforcement as well. homeland security says that they are working with crowdstrike, microsoft and federal, state and local, agencies to make sure that the infrastructure is still in place. the california governor's office of emergency services also said that they are working. they have indications that 911 and public safety communications, critical infrastructure, they are working as intended in sunnyvale. kris sanchez today in the bay. and that's good to hear because, scott, i know you've been on top of this all morning to we hear about the airports, the banks and even hospitals have been we've been checking everything, right. trying to get ahold of as many people as we can. hospitals. they're reporting problems. some of them with charting. they now do that on
6:35 am
computer. it's not mission critical. we're not talking about the things that keep people alive. we're talking about what doctors and nurses do. they're doing it on paper. they've done it on paper before. they know how to do it. as chris mentioned, grab your phone because in a second i will show you a suggested fix that crowdstrike has posted. and we can't show it to you on the screen forever, so you can take a picture on it. i did check other things. i mean, my home and i'm speaking only of the south bay, but home internet power, stoplights, iphone, icloud, gmail, those all seem to be working fine. new york city is talking about problems with their fastpass on their transit. bart reporting no ticketing problems. i stopped an atm. i was telling you earlier just to take out a test. 20 bucks. that worked just fine with no issues. but here's what my workstation looked like with the sad face this morning. this may be what your workstation looks like when you get into the office. mac computers not affected. this is a windows issue, and as marcus and ginger have been covering,
6:36 am
airlines are coming back online. but some of those planes may still be out of position. east coast mass transit i mentioned that with that, but local mass transit seems to be okay. the fix that crowdstrike engineers have posted on social media is this. and if you're not super familiar with computers and you don't need your computer right this second, wait for an automated patch. but if time is of the essence you need something right now, you can boot into safe mode or the windows recovery environment, and that should come up as an option. you're going to then go to the c drive. and then this is obviously what you're taking a picture of. so you can refer to it later that file directory. and then there's the bad guy a file called c dash. and then 50291 star dot cis. if you delete that file and you can do that safely, then you reboot. and this is again if you're familiar with this kind of thing, if you have that presentation that's locked in on your computer and the board of directors is expecting this in
6:37 am
45 minutes, it is 636. the market's opened. normally, we have seen no problems or indications of problems so far. so, so far, so good as far as crowdstrike that, you know, shares of crowdstrike not doing well today. this is their ipo. some years ago. you're probably not a household name. they work behind the scenes stopping bad things from happening. this is one of those companies that ideally you never have to think about. right now. they are definitely everyone's least favorite company. but in general they are. they're fixing things behind the scenes so that you never notice them. and your life continues as normal. yeah. upset today. thankful tomorrow when they prevent some cyber attack from happening. exactly. your system. so yes. all right. well at least it was nothing outside. this was not a cyber attack. not a not a cyber attack. it was some sort of error. all right. thanks. sorry. take a picture of that quick fix you got. all right, well, let's turn now to the impact this morning at airports from this historic outage. let's take a live look
6:38 am
at both sfo and oakland, where flights are being impacted today in the bay's thom jensen is live at sfo this morning. tom. some of those passengers had a long night. they sure did. good morning ginger. yeah. and, even though things are getting back to normal here at the american check in gates, here at the counters, you can see the lines are moving through. it was anything but normal. it was. it was just crazy overnight. a nightmare for travelers who were trying to face this global. it failure on the flight screens here at sfo. blue recovery messages confirming the airport had system wide technical issues. they're back up now, but they were still down this morning when i first arrived at sfo. sfo officials confirmed they were part of the global software glitch that will go down as one of the biggest it failures in history. we talked to people who landed this morning, got caught right in the middle of it. they waited on the
6:39 am
tarmac for an hour before they were able to deplane. then they had to wait in baggage for an hour before they could get their luggage. others ran into issues trying to check bags for outgoing flights. they said sfo has a problem with their software. of course, the pilot doesn't know that it's everywhere else. we couldn't even check our bags. our bags are right there. they, we couldn't even go in the kiosk. we received a variety of statements from most of the major airlines, saying that they also faced those technical issues, updated statements, saying that they're working through them now and flights are starting to get out. although there are some cancellations and delays. been reading about the issues also globally, talking to passengers here, one man from sydney told me he was supposed to catch a flight after landing in sfo late last night to dallas early this morning. he's not going to be able to fly out until tonight. the faa issued a statement this morning saying it's closely monitoring the technical issues impacting systems at us airlines around the united states. the faa said airlines have requested agencies
6:40 am
help for ground stops. that means that they're helping, the airlines control the traffic, slow down the traffic, cancel some of the flights, delayed flights as they work through the bugs. they are working through the bugs. we've been keeping an eye on those screens that we saw those recovery messages on, for instance, here at terminal one, the departure screen is fully up. now, however, we do see a lot of cancellations, a lot of delays, no issues in the tsa security lines either. six minutes in the regular queue, which is pretty normal. i understand. so, those issues seem to be all worked out. however, if people are coming to the airport for departing flights, you've got people coming in, arriving. you might want to check beforehand before you come out to either sfo, oakland, in san jose. it doesn't matter where you're picking people up or you're departing from, everybody face these issues and they're still going to face some of these issues later on as we get air traffic. airplanes moved around from
