some airlines are reporting some of their systems are coming back online. others including delta pausing all flights earlier today. we're reporting 1,400 delays -- make that 3,600 delays, 1,400 cancellations. that has of 7:00 a.m. pacific time. that will continue to grow. this is the misery map. the red highlights the most affected airports, and l.a.x. is starting to show some red. no surprise. major airlines that were knocked offline requested the faa issue ground stops for their flights. quite a few u.s.-bound flights overseas have still not been allowed to take off. this is also affecting banks, 911 systems, broadcasters and some hospitals canceling elective surgeries today. it's a massive computer outage wreaking havoc worldwide, grounding flights across the

globe, hitting airlines, banks, stores, and even some 911 services. >> it makes taking care of people in the emergency room extremely difficult. and time-consuming as if it wasn't already. >> reporter: the outage appears to stem from crowdstrike, causing users of microsoft windows operating systems to crash. crowdstrike tells nbc news it suffered a major outage impacting businesses globally. the ceo says in a statement crowdstrike is actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update that is not a security incident or a cyberattack. at least three major u.s. airlines, delta, united and american grounded this morning. the faa says several airlines requests assistance. lines have been growing at airlines nationwide. >> there is no information that flights are taking off. they have no idea what's going on. >> american says it's now been able to safely reestablish our operation. across the country, users on social media have been posting

ginger conejero saab. we're following breaking news this morning. a massive it outage is impacting airports, businesses and media groups around the world. some airlines are now back up and running, but many airports are still recovering, including at sfo, where many flights are delayed or canceled. the problem is tied to an upgrade of the crowdstrike cloud based cybersecurity system. i'm kris sanchez in sunnyvale, outside the company crowdstrike, which has taken responsibility for the global cyber outage that brought so many companies and agencies to a halt. the ceo says that it was a single content update for windows hosts. the issue has been identified, isolated and a fix deployed, he reiterated that this was not a cyber attack, but that single update impact microsoft's 365 apps and azure services the cloud services it took major airlines, media organizations

but thanks, savannah. >> it was a late night. we'll get to savannah in just a moment. let's start with the latest on that breaking news overnight. a widespread technology outage impacting flights and businesses all over the world. >> and those disruptions are ongoing. maybe you are going to the airport, the bank, anywhere. we have you updated. an update by cybersecurity firm crowdstrike led to the outages. we will talk with its ceo in just a minute. this, by the way, his first interview since the problem started. but let us begin with tom costello. hey, tom. >> i'm watching the computer right here, guys, flight aware's misery map. 920 flight cancellations. 18,000 delays worldwide. now, there is no way to know how many of those might be related to the microsoft outage. but make no mistake, we have a significant problem rolling across the globe here. airlines, airports have been affected. many have had to go to ground stops and not fly at all.

america says it is back up and running. delta says it's still pausing all flights. that includes delta and united, and american as well as some overseas airlines, and now those airlines are starting to come back online, but it is a slow process indeed. this all happened because crowdstrike which is a major cybersecurity company, was putting through a software upgrade if you will, a patch to the microsoft system, but there was a line of code in that software that apparently was bad, and that brought the whole system down. the ceo of crowdstrike tells us that they are working on it right now. they think they're making progress, but this is going to be a process that really evolves throughout the day. if you hope to fly today, you could be delayed, hoda. >> tom, thank you so much. we are joined by the founder and ceo of crowdstrike. good to see you.

a lot of people woke up and saw that blue screen of death. we have been hearing all about messes across the u.s. a lot of broadcast channels had those blue screens everywhere. people are wondering what happened. so what did happen? >> yeah. >> yeah. so, first, thank you for giving me the opportunity to chat with you first on air. and i want to start with saying we're deeply sorry for the impact that we have caused to customers, to travelers, to anyone affected by this, including our company. so we know what the issue is. we're resolving it, have resolved the issue now. essentially as you talked about and the statement i put out is the system was sent an update and that update had a software bug in it and caused an issue with the microsoft operating system. and we identified this very quickly and remediating the issue. and as systems come back online as they're rebooted, they're coming up and they're working and now we are working with each and every customer to make sure we can bring them back online. but that was the extent of the issue in terms of a bug that was

related to our update. >> it's savannah here in milwaukee. i mean, you are in the cybersecurity business, and i certainly don't even pretend to understand this. but according to your statement, it was a single content update that has managed to shut down air travel, credit card payment systems, banks, broadcasts, street lights, 911 emergency around the globe. why is there not some kind of redundancy or some sort of backup? how is it that one single software bug can have such a profound and immediate impact? >> well, when you look at the complexity of cybersecurity, you are always trying to stay one step ahead of the adversaries. excuse me. one second, please. >> oh, yeah. take a drink of water. >> yeah, yeah.

sorry. >> i'm sure it's been a long night. >> it's been a long night. we're always trying to stay one step ahead of the adversaries. in this case, our systems are looking for the latest attacks from these adversaries that are out there. so this content update went out. and as it does and it's been doing for many, many years, obviously we've got a robust team that is looking at the safety and security and the quality of these updates, and we have to go back and see what happened here. but if there is a negative interaction with the way some of these operating systems work, in this particular case, it was only the microsoft operating system that was impacted, you will see a reaction like this. and this is what we have seen here. >> yeah. i think a lot of people woke up and wondered if something nefarious was afoot, if this was some kind of cyberattack. but you are saying this is something within your own system. i was watching the news out of

australia. they were trying to get their television stations back on the air, their hospital software back up and running, the banks going. how long does it take to get everything back up and running? >> first and foremost, to reinforce what you said, it wasn't a cyberattack. it was related to this software update. as you might imagine, we have been on, you know, with our customers all night and working with them. many of the customers are rebooting the system and it's coming up and it will be operational because of -- you know, we fixed it on our end. and some of the systems that aren't recovering, we're working with them. so it could be some time for some systems that just automatically won't recover, but it is -- you know, it is our mission, it is why we're here, to make sure every customer is fully recovered, and we're not going to relent until we get every customer back to where we are and we continue to protect them and keep the bad guys out of their systems. >> did you ever think you could

update from one of the world's largest cybersecurity providers. we have the very latest on this still breaking story. good morning. >> good morning. i'm look at my screen. we've now got 2,900 flight delays in the united states today. 1,200 cancellations, and about 23,000 delays worldwide. we don't know how many of those are related to the computer outage, but in the united states, this is a big problem. airlines affected, airports affected. here's the misery map as you would expect. the column on the right, the red column shows you the airports most affected at this hour. banks are also affected. broadcasters affected. even 911 systems and hospitals affected. hospitals for example, canceling elective surgeries across the country because of this problem. this all stems from a software patch that this cybersecurity company, crowdstrike, was trying to upload into the microsoft

it's always been a dream of mine. but once i stepped on the field, it sort of all went away, and i was back. >> it's where you belong. it's clear. how cool is it to be on this journey with your brother quinn as your teammate? >> yeah, quinn is the man. he's been really helpful on this journey. you know, he's always giving me feedback and criticism, but he always has my back and always shows support. so he's really helpful with the balance of school, soccer and a social life for me specifically. and i'm just really, really happy to have him along the way. >> you know what's cool? after that hug, you all did some weird handshakes. was that a secret handshake that you and your brother do? what is that? >> yeah. so a long time ago back when i was about five or six, it was the first handshake we made. so we turned it into a little celebration, and we did it.

so, yeah. >> cavan, i want to put this in perspective here, how talented you are. i have a 12-year-old and 14-year-old that are super soccer fans. they're pretty good. like my weekends now are on soccer fields across this country. i have seen how talented these kids are all across the country every weekend. so for you to be where you are, you are a generational talent. even your coach said, this isn't some gimmick. you are the real deal. how does it feel to hear even your coach say that? i mean, you are very, very talented, cavan. >> yeah. honestly, it means a lot coming from jim. it's really specializes that he recognizes my talent at such a young age, at 14. but me personally, i don't really thrive off words like that. it is usually my own mentality and what i think of myself. i'm a self-aware person, so i know how i'm doing it in my life
