morning to you on this tuesday. thanks for making us a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we are under that microclimate weather alert. it kind of depends on how you say it. the hottest day of the week is here. or the hottest day of the week is here. what do you say, kari? i say the hottest day of the week is here because as we approach the weekend, it's going to be so much better. so we're going to get this heat and the more uncomfortable weather out of the way. and then we're also still dealing with this excessive heat warning for today and tomorrow. so we are going to start out cool. at least we do have this at 66 right now in concord it is 69. in san jose and 55 in san francisco, mostly 50s in the north bay. and this is a look at our highs this afternoon. we can do it. we can make it through. it's going to be 102 today in livermore. and we're looking at those hotter temperatures farther inland in san jose today 93 degrees. we'll

get a look ahead to the cooler temperatures for the end of the week. that's coming up in a few minutes. all right kari, thank you. well, we begin this hour with developments in the race for the white house. vice president kamala harris has reportedly secured enough support to name her the democratic nominee for president. now, this is all ahead of the party's convention in chicago. next month. the chairman of the dnc speaking out this morning on today's show, he admits the process to select that nominee for president will be quick, in part due to ohio's requirement. that's a selection must be named by august 7th to get on that november ballot. this process is going to be fair, transparent, open, but it's going to be fast. and we have designed it to allow our nominees to really hit the measures and to hit the requirements that are necessary to be on the ballot in all 50 states. the dnc rules committee meets tomorrow to discuss the

framework to officially select a new nominee. in the wake of president biden ending his reelection bid. and for the first time, president biden is speaking out about leaving the race, passing the torch as republicans pivot their focus today in the bay's brie jackson live for us in washington this morning and brie, let's talk about this harris really getting right on the campaign trail today. that's right. good morning. marcus so today, vice president harris will travel to wisconsin, marking the first battleground state campaign stop of her 2024 presidential campaign. this will be the vice president's fifth visit to the state. just this year, and her ninth since taking office. after a major political shakeup, vice president kamala harris is reintroducing herself, meeting with staff at what's now her presidential campaign headquarters in delaware. and it is my intention to go out and earn this nomination and to win. yes, president biden isolating

but some americans say they still want to know more about the candidate. she might be a little bit harder to beat because, there isn't any mud on her that i've heard about. what can she do for our economy? what can she do again, in those aspects that i feel like trump may be kind of aligns more? i guess, is my thought. harris is seeking to make her case on the campaign trail and on the organizing front. there's been a surge with 58,000 individuals signing up to volunteer with the harris campaign since sunday afternoon. marcus. and since sunday, we know the clock is ticking. time waits for no one. democrats really have to move quickly here. as i said earlier, their convention less than a month away. and vice president harris, she doesn't have a lot of time to pick her running mate here. but i understand she is getting some help with that. that's right. so vice president harris has tapped former attorney general eric holder and his law firm to dig into the

the picture of the gold complex fire that i just pulled a few minutes ago. you can see the smoke and the flames coming up there, and that big plume of smoke that's coming out from that. and it's definitely creating its own weather conditions as we get those gusty winds kicking up out of that. but much of the smoke is blowing away from the bay area but there are so many fires burning across the region and we do have a hazy sky this morning. moderate air quality and the lighter shades of blue show that we are going to see more of the hazy skies as we go into the next couple of days, and eventually there will be some improvement in our air quality as we get a stronger ocean breeze. as we take a live look outside in dublin, you can see the hazy orange morning that we have there and temperatures in the upper 60s. but when you combine that with high heat and high levels of ozone, that also impacts our air quality as our temperatures today, there head for the upper 90s. and in livermore, 102 degrees will be
6:42 am
the high temperature today we're going to have some pretty excessive heat for the east bay today. and then it does improve as we go toward the end of the week. so we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mike, you're tracking a crash in sunol. i am kerry. it looks like things are on the shoulder without any major delay, but more traffic coming off the dublin interchange. we'll track that. i also see a little slowing that popped up on the san mateo bridge. we'll check and see if that's just standard, or we'll just give it a few minutes to develop here. the rest of the east bay looks pretty standard for contra costa county. a good amount of traffic now heading down toward the walnut creek interchange that still moves smoothly, but 680 south, bringing the traffic over to highway 24. we are now looking a little bit ahead of this. the commute this morning, though, for tonight, overnight, we'll have the webster tube closed for maintenance. that's tonight and tomorrow and the next day. so three nights of maintenance there scheduled. and folks know to get to alameda out of oakland in the late night hours after ten. then you have to take these bridges just to the south. so good options for you and well known and also dual

caltrans worker who was killed on the job. alexander rhodes was killed after being struck by a vehicle while working on interstate five in san clemente. he was 55 years old, survived by his two adult children, a sister and a brother. rhodes is the 194th caltrans worker to lose their life on the job since 1921. new video is coming to light in a harrowing rescue in sacramento. two men say their inflatable raft got caught in a strong current in the american river during a fishing trip yesterday. the conditions swept them into the water, eventually trapping them on a tree. their

raft also became caught in branches. first responders used multiple resources to get those men to safety. most of them, both of them say they were wearing life vests at the time and have this advice for anyone who might be thinking of mirroring their behavior. keep your life jackets on. stay where it's calm and stay out of the. stay out of the roughness. watch out for trees. other than that, that's about it. never go fishing in a rubber raft. first of all, life is very valuable, man and so, you know, you have to always keep that in mind, man. despite one of the men suffering a cut to his leg, no one was severely injured. 647 the paris opening ceremonies kick off on friday and things are certainly heating up. our team is in place and the athletes are arriving for the ceremony and the competition. yeah, and today, in the bay's kris sanchez heading over the baton to you because the olympic torch itself is getting oh so close. oh, it's so hot. it's so

hot. so the olympic torch made its way to the south of south of france overnight. and you might have seen the traditional olympic torch running shots, but how about this torch run by water? we've talked about when the opening ceremony is happening, which is friday. but have we mentioned how this is all going to play out on barges in the river sand instead of inside a stadium, and we'll see so many of the sights that we think of when we hear paris, 10,500 athletes will compete, 592 of them are from the u.s, 123 are from california. california, the most represented out of any state in the nation. that includes beach volleyball player april ross, who is an olympic mom. caleb dressel, another olympic parent. he's one of 34 dads. his fellow swimmers, alex and gretchen walsh, are among the six sets of siblings. and now nbc bay area family members are there as well. jessica aguirre and her team are now in paris, and it might look

6:51 am
much of the rest of the bay area and headed towards some hot temperatures for today. 93 downtown in san jose and 99 in morgan hill. now we're going to see some triple digit temperatures as we reach the peak of the heat for the east bay today, antioch and livermore, 102 degrees 95. in martinez and oakland today, 83 degrees will be in the upper 80s for redwood city, but keeping it comfortable for half moon bay. we're in the low 70s here, and a lot of 70s for san francisco as well. brisk westerly wind, and then for the north bay temperatures 70 in bodega bay to 84 in mill valley to 106 today in ukiah. so you can see it will still be hot. but factor this in the humidity. we're going to see a surge of tropical moisture surging northward into the bay area. now, that may cause us to have a few more clouds throughout the afternoon. but you may also feel a little bit more humidity in
6:52 am
the air. this green shows the mid-level moisture coming in, and when we get the remnants of tropical systems nearby, this is the other concern. we have the potential of thunderstorms popping up, and when we get lightning, this potential with these little blue squares here showing on our computer model, that's when you get rain. and then as the rain comes through the atmosphere, it dries up. but the lightning strikes can still make it to the ground. so with our extremely dry vegetation that is very concerning to see that potential that we have not only for the sierra, but across across parts of southern california. and then it redevelops again tomorrow with the heat of the day. so we'll be watching that once the humidity drops by late tomorrow into thursday, the temperatures will start to cool off as well as we see the return of our ocean breeze. and look at san jose's saturday temperature. we're going from really hot today to just beautiful on saturday with highs in the mid 70s, and some
6:53 am
of our warmer spots inland will only reach into the low 80s, so big changes ahead, dropping about 20 degrees in some spots. not as much of a drastic change in san francisco. we're going for mid 70s today and tomorrow to 60s for the weekend, but we'll see that fog linger a lot longer throughout the day. and mike, you were checking in on the san mateo bridge boys carry because westbound we saw a ton of slowing. things really started to gum up, and it took about ten minutes before we saw anything going on. but it was eastbound coming toward us, toward hayward, where we saw very slow traffic, almost a traffic break, and a bunch of flashing lights. i believe this is a procession. heading over toward what ginger is talking about is the officers memorial up in vacaville. so you may see groups of officers traveling around along the freeways into the north bay just keep that in mind. there's no stoppage, but it is a spectacle. we're looking at a build for 880 the south pass, the san mateo bridge and northbound through the south bay. typical build, but actually pretty good for this tuesday after an early start. we still have some things going on for contra costa county. back to you. thank you very much, mike.
