harris presidential campaign. overnight, nbc news reporting that she now has the endorsement of enough delegates to win the democratic party's nomination. this comes as her campaign has reported more than $100 million in donations since president biden announced his decision to drop out of the race. >> meanwhile, as for the trump campaign, it's been forced to change its strategy. stepping up attacks on harris. the former president taking on. his rival on social media while his running mate, jd vance hit the trail on his own for the very first time. >> we have complete coverage including a live interview with the chair of the democratic national committee that have news about harris' delegate support. but let us begin with nbc's chief white house correspondent peter alexander. hey, peter. good morning. >> reporter: hoda, craig, good morning to you. for democrats, it feels like this race changed overnight. vice president harris right now writing this surge of energy and enthusiasm, as you just noted. the harris campaign noting she has raised more than $100

million since sunday afternoon. notably nearly two-thirds of those donations come from people who have never given before. nearly 60,000 people now signing up to volunteer. and today she is off to campaign in one of the most critical battle states of all, wisconsin. overnight, a major boost for kamala harris on her first full day of the race. the vice president, securing the support of the more than 1976 delegates she would need to win the democratic nominations. that makes her the party's clear front runner ahead of the convention in chicago. on monday visiting what's now her campaign headquarters in delaware. harris offering a preview of her case against former president trump. >> donald trump wants to take our country backwards. >> reporter: casting herself as a former prosecutor going after her political rival, a convicted criminal. >> i took on perpetrators of all kinds. predators who abused women.

fraudsters who ripped off consumers. cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain. so hear me when i say i know donald trump's type. >> reporter: harris in her campaign debut taking the torch from president biden. still sounding hoarse from covid when he called in. vowing they're still in the fight together. >> the name has changed at the top of the ticket, but the mission hasn't changed at all. >> the two sharing a virtual embrace. >> i'm watching you, kid. i'm watching you, kid. i love you. >> i love you, joe. >> reporter: many coalesce around the vice president's presidency. former house speaker nancy pelosi endorsing harris. the senate's top democrat chuck schumer and hakeem jeffries holding off, expecting to meet with harris soon. and no major candidates emerging to take on harris, the spotlight is quickly shifting to her

possible running mate. among the names getting the most attention, arizona senator mark kelly, north carolina governor mark cooper and josh shapiro of pennsylvania, a must-win state for democrats who says he spoke with harris sunday. >> this is a deeply personal decision that the vice president will make. >> reporter: also under consideration, kentucky governor, andy beshear. said he's flattered to be part of the process. and attacking the vice presidential pick on the republican side. >> the problem with j.d. vance is he has no conviction. but i guess his running mate has 34. >> reporter: and later today president biden will return from his delaware beach house here to the white house where he is recovering from covid, of course. no public events on his schedule today, but he is expected to deliver a nationwide address within days to share more about his decision to leave this race. craig and hoda? >> all right. peter alexander at the white house. peter, thank you. the democratic shake-up also forced republicans to pivot after focussing on a rematch of president biden for the better part of two years. and donald trump's running mate, jd vance had plenty to say

during his first solo rallies. nbc's garrett haake covers the trump campaign for us. good morning. >> hey, craig, good morning. in the first 24 hours or so since joe biden stepped aside, the trump campaign appeared to struggle to move their focus off the current president and turn what amounts to a billion dollar battleship around to face their likely new opponent. by the end of the day, the campaign's attack against kamala harris became clear. >> reporter: this morning, the republican ticket adjusting to a political earthquake. >> i was told i was going to get to debate kamala harris, and now president trump will get to debate her? >> reporter: sources tell nbc news the trump campaign and their allies have been preparing to face off against harris for weeks. launching ads tying her to president biden's handling of key issues like immigration and inflation. just hours after he endorsed her. >> if you ever wondered how joe biden could get the border so screwed up, remember, he had help. >> reporter: but president trump lamented on social media over the weekend, quote, now we have to start all over again.

now his running mate j.d. vance taking on the traditional role for a vice presidential nominee, attack dog, in his first solo campaign appearances. >> history will remember joe biden not just a quitter, which he is, but one of the worst presidents in the united states of america. but my friends, kamala harris is a million times worse. >> reporter: vance also going after democrats in his hometown of middletown, ohio. >> they say it is racist to do anything. i had a diet mountain dew yesterday and one today. i'm sure they will call that racist, too, but it's good. >> reporter: later focussing on harris' path to the ticket. >> democrats are the ones who want to throw out 14 million ballots and not elect kamala harris, but select kamala harris with a bunch of billionaires and barack obama and nancy pelosi making the decision instead of democrat voters. >> reporter: the language from some in the gop turning apocalyptic. introducing vance at his first

stop, ohio state senator george lang warning of violence if former president trump doesn't win the election. >> i'm afraid if we lose this one, it will take a civil war to save the country. >> reporter: he later apologized for the comments. for his part, president trump who had previously warned of a quote blood bath if he didn't win, in a newly aired interview taped before biden's announcement saying he's ready to face any opponent. >> look, they have bad policies. forget about the people. the whole thing is a mess, our country. if we don't win this election, we may never have another election. i'm telling you, this may be one of our last elections. >> covering both of the vance events yesterday, you could see the republican vp nominee step up his attacks on kamala harris in realtime with a dramatically darker tone setting in ohio and virginia. the republican message of trying to unify the country so prevalent at last week's convention in milwaukee now seems a thing of the past in the new presidential race. craig? >> garrett haake for us there in

washington. thank you. so what happens now with the democratic convention less than a month away? jaime harrison joins us this morning, the chairman of the dnc. mr. chairman, good morning to you, sir. >> good morning, craig. it is good seeing you. >> so with what happened last night with the delegates as we sit here this morning, safe to say that kamala harris is your party's nominee for president? >> you know, the vice president definitely has tremendous momentum. she's been working the phones, doing all that's necessary in order to secure this nomination. now, we officially launch this process tomorrow, when our rules committee will meet to enact the rules of the convention and the rules of the nomination process. it is three steps the rules committee meets, craig. we will then open up for the official signatures for the delegates. you have a few days and then we will start the official voting for our nominee, likely by august 1st. >> i want to talk about the time

line in just a moment. but to be clear, this all happened very quickly, mr. chairman. the delegates -- essentially overnight this happened. to those who had claimed, as you just heard there, that so far the process has not been open and transparent, what would you say? >> well, the process has been fair. it's been open. it's been transparent. if anybody is thinking about running, you're running against the sitting vice president, who, along with joe biden, who worked really hard going across this country building relationships. and probably the most qualified person to be on this ballot. she has the experience. and, so, that's -- that's a tough road to hoe if that's not where -- if you don't have that gravitas, and she has it. so she's taking that momentum. we're seeing a tremendous amount of energy from the vice president. just recently in the past two days, there were two calls of black men and black women, over 100,000 combined, and they raised over $3 million. look at the energy the vp

garnered as it comes to fund-raising. i don't know, for anybody who is thinking about challenging her, that's going to be a tough hill to climb here. >> let's talk time line for a moment here. august 7th seems to be the date that she is going to be on or before officially nominated because the ohio ballot deadline situation there. what more can you tell us about how that's going to affect her vp pick and the timing of that? >> yeah. so, listen, we have developed -- this process will be fair, transparent, open, but it's going to be fast. and we have designed it to allow our nominees to really hit the measures and to hit the requirements that are necessary to be on the ballot in all 50 states. and in ohio, in order to be on that ballot, you have to have not only a presidential nominee but also a vice presidential nominee. so it is going to be up to the eventual nominee to make that determination. but we have designed this

process so that they have the sufficient time in order to select who that may be. >> so by the time the convention starts, you have a presidential nominee and the vice presidential nominee? >> that's exactly right. >> on or before august 7th? >> well, again -- >> okay. >> we're going to give it up to the nominee to make a determination on. but we should. if we're going to be on all 50 ballots we definitely have to have all that done and locked up by august 7th. >> let's talk about this virtual roll call that you guys are going to have. as you know, there was a letter circled by congressional democrats when the idea was first floated to confirm here, her. stifling debate and prematurely shutting down any tickets through unnecessary and unprecedented virtual roll call in the days ahead is a terrible idea. again, that came from congressional democrats. what do you say to those critics who are calling this a coronation, not so much an election? >> listen, i think we announced

this process back in may. and we announced it because in ohio the republicans were playing games in terms of ballot access for our nominee. and as the chief judiciary for the democratic party, my goal and my responsibility is to make sure unquestioned that we are on the ballot in all 50 states. i'm not going to become the first chair that doesn't meet that requirement. and, so, that's why we move this process up, so that we could get that august 7th deadline. >> jaime, 30 seconds here. really quickly. >> yeah. >> let's talk about what happened over the weekend with the former president being forced out, reportedly being shown some polling that showed that he couldn't win. a lot of people said that president biden was bullied out of office. what do you make of that? >> listen, the president, we owe him a tremendous amount of gratitude. he's a good man. he's a decent man. he's been a transformational president. but what he also demonstrated by stepping out of this race is that he is selfless.

he is focussed on what is in the best interest of the american people. >> but was he bullied? >> he made an assessment, craig, that this was the best thing for not only the american people but for the democratic party. >> dnc chair jaime harrison. jamie, thank you for your time this morning. >> thank you. meantime, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are increasing pressure on the director of the secret service to step down after she was to step down after she was r the grilled on capitol hill over the attempt on former pr attempt on former president trump's life. nbc's ryan nobles joins us. he's got the latest. hey, ryan. good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. the members of congress were so upset with the response or lack of response that they got from director cheatle that they leaders of the committee sent her a bipartisan letter demanding she resign. a call that at this point she's resisting. for more than four hours, secret service director, kimberly cheatle faced an avalanche of attacks from both republicans and democrats in congress. >> i believe director cheatle that you should resign. >> not only should you resign.

if you refuse to do so, president biden needs to fire you. >> reporter: cheatle forced to appear by subpoena attempted to take the blame for the security lapses that led to the attempted assassination of former president donald trump. >> we must learn what happened and i will move heaven and earth to ensure that an incident like july 13th does not happen again. >> reporter: instead, she left many members of congress frustrated. >> you are full of [ bleep ] today. you are being fully dishonest. >> pressing for answering. >> was there ever a moment that the secret service considered pausing the rally? >> the secret service would have paused the rally had they known there was an actual threat. >> so the answer is no? the answer is no, correct? >> i can -- i can speak to you in generalities. >> no, no. i don't want generalities. i want specifics. >> reporter: unable to answer basic questions, like when the gunman got on the roof and what he had with him. >> was the gun already on the roof, or did the shooter carry the gun up with him?

>> i do not have that information at this time. >> reporter: nbc news has reported that the secret service turned down a request by the trump team for more security assets. cheatle responded by saying there were no additional asks for the july 13th rally. but her inability to provide any explanation for what went wrong led to a rare bipartisan call at the end of the hearing from ranking member jamie raskin and chairman james comber for her to resign. >> this relationship is irretrievable at this point. >> reporter: a call cheatle refused to entertain even as she left the hearing room. >> it is bipartisan calls for you to step down, ma'am. will you take those calls to heart? >> and the house is set this week to vote on the authorization of a bipartisan task force specifically aimed at the investigation into the assassination attempt and proposed reforms to prevent it from happening again. hoda? >> ryan nobles for us there in d.c. ryan, thank you. 7:18. feels like a good time to get the first check of the weather.

so far since friday -- yesterday alone, 29% of delta flights cancelled. this morning 11% canceled today. 400 flights. and the affected airports no surprise. right? they're delta hubs or delta big presence airports including minneapolis and atlanta and detroit, jfk, lax, reagan airport here. this airline is still feeling the effects from that software upgrade that went bad last week. delta's computers still affected. that means a lot of passengers are stuck. mid-july, the peak of the summer vacation season and hundreds of thousands of delta passengers have been going nowhere fast, spending hours in ticket lines and sleeping on airport floors. >> all these people stranded. >> reporter: time lapsed video of a four-hour wait for a customer service rep in atlanta, delta's home base. >> we've got crisis mitigation plans in place. >> reporter: the delta app equally frustrating for some.

>> it automatically tried to rebook me to the next subsequent flight. then that was canceled. that was canceled. and that was canceled. >> reporter: delta's airport hubs have been the most affected. lax, jfk atlanta, minneapolis, detroit, salt lake, lax, jfk and laguardia. >> been staying at hotels. i can't -- because money is running out. i spent my money on my vacation. >> reporter: more than 5,000 canceled flights since friday morning when the crowdstrike cybersecurity update took down its computers, including a critical crew scheduling system. delta's ceo apologized to customers over the weekend. in comments to employees monday, ed bastien says it's been a horrible weekend for us all. it is going to take another couple of days before we're in a position to say that the worst is clearly behind us. in miami, european vacationers have been stuck. >> we tried to fly home to

switzerland on saturday. and then we got rebooked on monday. and now they told us we are -- have to stay here for two more nights. >> nobody can tell me where my luggage are. i really need to get them. ky not wait tomorrow. they cannot fly it back to canada because i need my meds now. >> reporter: at many airports, unclaimed luggage has been piling up. >> they know where my bag is right now. it's loading on a plane and they won't go get it. that's disappointing. >> i mean, you got a lot of disappointed, frustrated folks out there right now, tom. any idea how delta plans to get back on track? >> reporter: by the way, delta is telling me it could actually be another two days or so. typically tuesday and wednesday are the slower days during a week, but this is the peak holiday summer travel week. so they're already flying full, which means they don't have a lot of reserves. they're offering flight attendants extra pay to work more, work overtime.

nbc news medical contributor dr. tara narula is here with tips for all women of all ages and skill levels. first of all, this beginning bit is kind of making me a little bit mad, okay? because it seems like the medical community, when it comes to injuries, they study men, and they don't study women. we're all different. we have different kinds of injuries. and there is a disparity there. >> there is a disparity across all aspects of science, right, but specifically definitely with sports and exercise physiology. so much of what we know is based on men in terms of the anatomy, healing from injury and even preventing and training when it comes to women. we are really behind. women have been underrepresented and under-researched. in fact, only 6% of strength and conditioning research has been based on women. >> wait, i'm sorry i didn't see you? >> 6. >> like the single digit? >> like the number 6. less than 34% of sports medicine journals have included studies that have women. >> well, i mean, this is such a basic fact. but when it comes to sneakers, i

was talking to a friend that when it comes to women's athletic shoes there is a term called pink them and shrink them. make them look pretty and smaller. >> exactly. >> they're men's shoes. cleats, for example, for soccer players. it is a real problem across the board. in fact, we're just learning, for example, that the menstrual cycle, something as basic as our hormones may affect whether we're more likely to get injured. researchers have learned that right bfr ovulation, that's a time of potentially increased injury. so really basic things, but we just have to study it. >> okay. let's get to some of the popular summertime sports. i have heard this from a lot of people. they're playing pickle ball. they love pickle ball. and everyone is getting hurt playing it. >> everyone is playing pickleball. >> what's the story here? >> yes. we have seen an increase in bone fractures. over the last several years. >> why is that? >> it's one of the most popular new american sports. women, especially over 65, we're seeing bone fractures. likely because of bone thinning and osteopetrosis. some other common injuries, ankle sprains are the most common across the board. then we think about shoulder

injuries, stress fractures, tendinitis or plantar fasciitis. >> okay. it's so stop and go, the game and such a smaller court doing a lot more of that i guess than you would in tennis. acl tears are big ones. that's a big problem. >> this is so interesting. so what we have learned is that women are 2 to 8 times more likely to rupture or tear their acl than men. again, we are starting to understand the why behind this. we have seen this with a lot of famous athletes. for example, lindsey vonn, megan rapinoe, 6 of the 23 world cup u.s. soccer athletes last year tore their acl. aubry plaza this weekend. >> okay. >> why might this be happening? >> we know that women have wider hips. the angle between the hips and the knee are different. that puts a different strain on the knee. our ligaments may be more flexible. the area in the knee that the acl runs through is a little narrower. we have less developed glute yal muscles and hamstrings. we land differently. our legs are more straight, feet flat, knees bent inwards.

when we turn, as opposed to men, turn on one foot. all of these things are really important and keys behind why women might be seeing these injuries more. >> if you want to prevent injuries what are some things we can do on the front end. >> first of all cross training. we get in the rut of doing the same thing. >> i do that. >> runner, try swimming and biking. strength and core building. we forget to build the muscles which increases the metabolism and bones. it builds bone health. also if you're ramping up you're doing, ramp up the volume and intensity slowly. don't go full force. stretch. rest, recover. hydrate. and proper form and technique. someone who injured her cervical spine by doing a strange side plank i can speak to the fact that you really have to know what you're doing. >> we have to underscore weights. that's one of those things that people say, oh, i'll do that later. but it actually -- i started doing weights at one point. it gives you more energy. you think you're going to get more fatigue from doing something like that.

it actually energizes you. >> it does, yes. >> if you start to feel like i got something but it's probably nothing and i'll just keep walking on it or working it. you say you've got to go to a specialist. don't be afraid. >> we talked about this before. listen to your body. you know your body. if you're having persistent pain lasting weeks, seeing swelling or bruising or not able to do what you usually do, it's time to see a specialist. there's a whole field of medicine called physical medicine and rehab, pmr which can be great. they can assess your injury and come up with a plan to get back to what you need to do. i will say physical therapy is really underutilized. i used when i was pregnant and had back pain. it doesn't have to be in the setting of an injury or surgery. physical therapist can work with you to build you back up to where you want to be. >> dr. narula, thank you so much. i appreciate it. for more information on women and sports injuries, scan the qr code below or head to today.com. oh, craig? >> just ahead. look who is here. chassis post and she has a new shop this list. it's loaded with everything that

we're so excited for this. i can hardly contain myself, with a special edition of "today food," as we gear up for the paris olympics. eric ripert. one of the best chefs in the world, of course, a frenchman as well here to get us pumped up for the olympics. chef, always good to see you. this is the sixth time the olympics will be held in your home country. it is the 100 year anniversary of being in paris. >> it is a big deal, for sure. >> is it exciting for you? >> yes, of course it is exciting. i will watch and hopefully the french athletes do well. >> that's right.

well, we're praying for the u.s. athletes over here in the village. but chef, when people go to france, walk us through what you're going to make today. >> so people will go in paris and eat in beistros. but a staple in france is a strip steak in a shallot sauce. we are cooking some scraps of beef. we will add some shallots in it, some garlic, like that. >> so these scraps are from what? if you're at home, is this a leftover -- >> get the butcher to give you some scraps and fatty pieces of meat. then we are going to put a little bit of flour. that will give a bit of richness to the broth. instead of being too liquidy, ih will be rich and thick. >> garlic, shallots, flour and a little bit of water. >> now we will put the water. >> this is to make the au jus. >> let the water reduce. and then you will have a nice

brown au jus to use. >> beautiful. then we have our steak. >> we have a beautiful steak. >> what do you like about the new york cut in particular? >> the new york cut because it is delicious. and very often in the bistro because this is an expensive cut they are skirt steak or flank steak, which is a cut that is not that expensive but very, very tasty. it is what you find in those bistros. we are going to cook our steak right here, like this. >> and you have generously seasoned both sides of it. >> we have some oil. and also they have to release some of the oil. >> yes. >> and then we are moving here. it is not going to burn. you have to sear it very well. here you see the meat is being cooked and seared. >> the residue is left over. >> a little bit of olive oil and butter. and shallots, a lot of shallots, like this. >> is this similar to the au

graue sauce? it's a shallot-based sauce. is it similar or no? >> it is different because -- you glaze with brandy cognac. the pepper and a bit of cream. >> yeah. >> but usually you flambe like a big flame. i don't think it is a good idea in the studio. >> no, it's not good. >> what do you think? this is your favorite meal, right? >> yes. and the fries. you haven't even touched these fries yet. >> they are very, very sweet and at the same time dark. >> this will be fun to make on friday for the opening ceremonies at the house to get in the mood. >> and it's easy. it's ease to make it. i made it medium rare, like this. >> oh, beautiful shot. >> you have a very good knife. >> do you ever cut yourself anymore, or is that just yesteryears? >> rarely. nobody likes to cut themselves.

>> i know. you don't know who you're talking to, chef. >> of course, the sauce with the shallots goes on top like that. >> having you make this, what a treat. >> what is the secret to great french fries? >> the secret is to cook them first in oil at a very low temperature, at 350 until they become soft. then you remove them. you bring your oil to 380. or 400. and then -- >> dump them back in. >> oh, they're twice fried. >> yeah. >> they're crunchy. then you remove them and then you season them and put on salt. >> can you believe you're here in new york. not only the michelin stars. the four-star "new york times" reviews. not only does it have all that. but your restaurant, how have you kept that for 35 years? you have a dynasty. you're the kansas city chiefs of restaurants. >> the team is very important because the team stays with us for a long time. and it creates consistency and quality. and that i think is the secret. >> you still have that pounded yellow fin tuna.
