5:00 am
5:01 am
exploding wildfires threatening hundreds of homes north of the bay area. video showing multiple homes lost. an update on the overnight battle that continues to play. there's also a time and a place for new voices. fresh voices? yes younger voices in that time and place is now. president biden passing the torch. though his term is not yet done. we are live in washington with what may be his greatest mission before leaving office. plus, we'll take you to paris as we count down to tomorrow's opening ceremony. everything you need to know with some competition already underway, this is today in the bay. how cool would it have been if we were like. and this is
5:02 am
today in the bay from paris? yeah, yeah, that would be super. that would have been nice. yeah. planting that seed maybe in 2028. there we go. all right. you guys send us to paris in the olympics. good morning to you all. i'm marcus washington and i'm kris sanchez. laura has the morning off this morning. we're going to check in with mike in just a bit. but we do want to talk about that forecast because we might finally get to turn that ac off. yes. and it's going to be so great to do that. and over the next few days, our temperatures will continue to cool off inland as we see a little bit more fog rolling into san francisco and the wind coming off of the cool ocean and the fog and the mist and drizzle helping to cool down the rest of the bay area. so this is the way we're starting right now. 58 degrees in san francisco. but we are still very warm in the inland areas. as to what we're used to feeling. we're in the upper 60s in livermore. our normal start to the day is in the upper 50s, so we're about
5:03 am
ten degrees above our normal low temperature for the day, and we're headed for 94 degrees for this afternoon. there morgan hill 96. so we are going to see still some 90s today, but no triple digits. and we're not dealing with a major heat risk. so we'll continue to talk about what's coming our way going into the weekend and the lower temperatures comin our way in a few minutes. mike, we're talking about you're seeing a wrong-way driver. possibly. yeah. so we're looking at the dublin camera, and i saw a lot of traffic as i first reviewed the camera, lined it up on the in the system here, and it seems like it's smoothing out now. there was a traffic break scheduled for the area, so it does look like the wrong-way driver was reportedly going eastbound in the westbound commute direction. reports of a traffic break around isabel, where i saw some slowing for just a minute or so, and then everything seems to have released again. so that would be great news if the only update we have is that it's clear now. we never like those reports of wrong-way drivers again near the dublin interchange, but i think
5:04 am
it's all clear things are moving smoothly on the speed sensors here. down at the bottom of the screen, over by the coliseum, there was another crash that was active in a few lanes for a for 880 right around 66. we don't see any flashing lights and no disturbance. so i'm going to say i think it's clear we'll check this. and then another crash cleared from mountain view. so now 101 and 880 clear again i believe we'll double check back to you. all right. thanks, mike. we start out this hour with breaking news in butte county. this is where a fast moving wildfire is triggering hundreds of evacuation orders. and we know it has destroyed at least one home. wow. okay, so this is video from overnight. what you're seeing right here. this is what's believed to be a propane tank exploding in a fully engulfed home. now, this is an area around five miles north of the outer edge of chico. this also appears to be just one of several nearby structures destroyed. this is called the park fire. it started
5:05 am
around 3 p.m. yesterday at of this morning. it has grown to 45,000 acres. it is burning east of chico and upper bidwell park. it's also not far from the still burning town. or excuse me, this is also burning. not far from the still rebuilding town of paradise. now we know evacuation orders are in effect for communities including richardson springs, forest ranch and cohasset. turning now to decision 2024 and president biden this morning is getting back to the business of commander in chief following last night's oval office address. the democratic base, meanwhile, is feeling a surge of optimism with his decision to step aside and endorse vice president kamala harris for the race for president today in the bay's brie jackson live in washington. brie. what was the reaction to last night's address? i know that was the topic of the family thread. that's right. good morning chris. well we did hear praise from many democrats for
5:06 am
president biden's address last night during his historic oval office speech. president biden says he's setting aside personal ambition in the defense of democracy and says he's passing the torch to a new generation. president biden, addressing the nation about his decision to drop out of the 2024 presidential race. i believe my record is president. my leadership in the world, my vision for america's future all merited a second term. but nothing, nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy. the president, highlighting his accomplishments over the past three and a half years and laying out his vision for his remaining time in office. i'm going to call for a supreme court reform, because this is critical to our democracy, the 81 year old democrat says he's passing the torch to the next generation of party leaders. there's also a time and a place
5:07 am
for new voices, fresh voices? yes, younger voices in that time and place is now the president is endorsing his 59 year old vice president, kamala harris, to succeed him. when i am president of the united states and when congress passes a law to restore those freedoms, i will sign it into law. former president trump is focusing his attacks on the former prosecutor this november. the american people are going to tell her, no thanks, kamala. you've done a terrible job without directly mentioning the former president, president biden says americans must choose between moving the country forward or backward. the power is in your hands. the idea of america lies in your hands. president biden making an appeal to voters and a defining moment in u.s. history. and during his speech, president biden
5:08 am
reflected on what he's accomplished during his more than 50 years of working in public service, adding it has been the privilege of his life. kris o brie. president biden also missed that address by israeli prime minister netanyahu. also that meeting on monday. so what's next in that regard? so the president will meet with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu today. for months, the biden administration has been working towards a cease fire deal and a way to bring home the remaining hostages held by hamas that is expected to be the focus of conversations today. and then the prime minister will also meet with vice president harris separately. all right. thank you very much, brie. we'll check in with you again a little later in the morning. 507 for you this morning and the owner of a popular oakland nightspot asking for your help. this is after burglars targeted his business. and it was all caught on video. so this happened a little after 5 a.m. yesterday at the alley. it's a historic piano bar and
5:09 am
the city's grand lake district. now, security cameras show those burglars managing to steal both the cash register and the bar's atm. they also hit neighboring restaurant almond and oak. the owner of ali believes that the recent spike in crime is really weighing down on the what is normally a popular location for visitors. this is a great area for nightlife, so it's really a shame that these crooks and vandals are just kind of ruining it. and it is clear now it was not really clear at this point how much money those thieves got away with, but police are asking anyone who may have video of what happened to give them a call. happening today in the south bay, a car caravan protest to support a trauma center that may soon be downgraded, maybe even closed. opponents are holding a series of rallies to support regional medical trauma center in east san jose. until recently, the plans have called for a full closure of that facility. on august 12th, but
5:10 am
there is now possibility that it could just be downgraded to a level two or level three trauma center, which critics say would still be a huge hit when it comes to emergency care. but at least it would remain open. the hospital owner, hca, says patient levels dropped too low and the impact from that closure will be minimal. today's caravan is scheduled to start at 330 this afternoon. well, a little more than 24 hours. the opening ceremony for the summer olympic games kicks off in paris. here is a live look for you this morning. the arc de triomphe. kris. you know what? i have video of me singing there at night. you do? yeah. let's see it. i'll show you later. okay? all right, all right. so first lady doctor jill biden, she actually arrived in paris from washington. and this is video here of her arriving just a short time ago. i love the jacket. she's ready to go. her delegation, also including contingent from los angeles, which of course will host the next summer games in 2028.
5:11 am
today, a big day for team usa rugby. yesterday they tied france and later lost to fiji. now if they beat uruguay, they will move into the quarterfinals which also takes place later today. meanwhile, san jose soccer star naomi girma and team usa begin their quest for gold and women's soccer. the u.s. takes on zambia and that game gets underway at 1130 this morning. our time, of course. it all airs live on usa network. also on peacock, which they're going to have extensive olympic coverage for us all. i mean, when we're all quiet at our desks, i think we'll know what we're doing and watching on tv. all right. well, with the games officially set to get underway, we are following the weather conditions the athletes are facing as they go for the gold. yeah. meteorologist kari hall is tracking a very parisian forecast. lapui is the word we'll hear during the opening ceremony that means rain. yes. we have rain in the forecast for friday in paris, and it looks like it does taper off as we go
5:12 am
into the afternoon. into the evening. but another round of showers and saturday's forecast as we head into the end of the weekend into early next week. lots of sunshine and temperatures will be warming up next week. they may be talking a little bit more about how warm it is outside, as our highs head for the low 90s, but that heat will be broken with some thunderstorms moving in for the middle of next week. we're watching all of this, and so excited about the opening ceremony. now let's head over to mike with a look at traffic. yeah, we're looking over here toward the gas prices and hoping it's award winning. no, not gold medal gold gold numbers though. or gold black on gold okay. whatever. good tie in mike. we're looking at san jose. we'll start there because the that's the best of the best. the san jose boasts the best prices in the entire state. 363 is great gas on stevens creek. the five best prices in the entire state are also in the south bay. great
5:13 am
stuff livermore. that's our best on the list for alameda county. 389 at dimond gas and mart on south front road and in vallejo. it's this bottom price right here. 394 that's exxon on springs road. you can find all these prices actually you can contribute to the reports gasbuddy.com on the roadways. let's get over toward the tri valley where we had the earlier traffic break. it looks like everything has cleared up for 580. so that's good news. no crash. the follow up is westbound commute is moving very smoothly now, so you have your minimum time there. just a little slowing out of the altamont vasco road. you're at speed as well. and across the richmond center fell bridge, there may be a traffic break mid span to move some equipment, but very light traffic. back over to you. all right mike, you know what those were gold numbers when it comes to the gas prices under $4. that is gold. yes yes that's a ten. all right we'll take it. that four is a ten. all right. is the revenge travel boom coming to an end? the airlines seem to think so. coming up, the new plans to fill empty seats as summer travel starts to slow. and how we can
5:14 am
all reap those rewards. plus chipotle possibly considering smaller portions. i mean, that would probably be okay. they're so big. we're going to talk about the company's new warning as costs continue to surge and carmel by the sea these days seems like a celebrity hotspot. it's always been kind of right. latest legend getting everyone there a little punchy, so to speak. y out this
5:15 am
5:16 am
5:17 am
morning, starting out a little mild for some spots. and in napa we're going to see our morning in the low 60s at 8:00 and at noon 78 degrees. it's not going to be as warm today as our highs. head for the mid to upper 80s here. and cooler weather is coming our way in time for the weekend. so we'll take a look at all of our microclimates coming up and a live look here. these headlights going north on 101 past university construction looks like it's picked up just north of marsh. no more slowing there. and a light traffic flow along the peninsula. so things are going as you probably planned. little blurry, maybe dirty lens. let's see how clearly we can see the business world, though. we'll check in with silvana. you? my good morning. i'm silvana henao from cnbc. let's start with wall street, which is set for a mixed open after yesterday's sell off, where we saw the nasdaq and the s&p 500 suffer their worst days
5:18 am
since 2022, down more than 3% and 2%, respectively. investors dumping mega-cap tech names like alphabet and tesla following their disappointing earnings, as well as other growth stocks such as nvidia, amazon and meta that have posted tremendous gains and led the markets so far this year. now, the s&p seeing its first decline of more than 2% since december of 2022, and traders viewing the recent declines and rotation to other sectors as an overdue correction. and what's still a healthy market now in focus today, data on jobless claims, durable goods and gdp. chipotle says it's trying to avoid having to resort to smaller portions and price increases this year. the burrito chain's second quarter results beating analysts estimates. and that's thanks in part to efforts to speed up service. now, chipotle says people across all income levels are buying burritos and other items, and current value deals
5:19 am
from rivals hasn't had much of an impact. but the company is still dealing with higher costs for avocados and dairy products, and airlines are bracing for the end of the post pandemic revenge travel boom, cutting ticket prices to fill a surplus of seats. now that's a sharp turnaround from a period of high airfares when passengers were desperate to travel anywhere and airlines suffered from a shortage of planes. the cracks have largely come on shorter routes in the u.s. and europe, and in economy class, with more expensive seats in business and first class, less affected guys. and people say the economy is bad. i remember back in the day during covid, well, right during covid, exactly that you could actually travel and it was like no one sitting next to you. yeah although we traveled a couple times in the summer and every flight was packed, everyone. oh yeah, i've traveled a couple of times during the last couple of months. everything is full. yeah. all right. hopefully we'll see you on a plane somewhere.
5:20 am
maybe to paris. who knows? hey, maybe that'll be awesome. thank you. savannah. well happening today, comic con returns to san diego with force. this only now coming back in full strength after recent bouts with covid and then labor conflict in hollywood. comic book and pop culture extravaganza is expected to draw more than 130,000 fans. events there run through sunday. my father in law used to send the girls comic books, but they're like nancy and sluggo. like, really old ones. i don't even know those. but yeah, that's i said, oh, some of you might. well, look, this is turning for you this morning. a new celebrity sighting causing quite the stir and a small beach town of carmel. as a former world champion boxer, oscar de la hoya was spotted dining there on monday. the restaurant nicolas cocina de gerencia mexicana posted these images on instagram. these are employees standing alongside the golden boy of boxing staff there says he ordered the carnitas
5:21 am
enfrijoladas. laura likes the enfrijoladas. his wife ordered the chile relleno, one of my favorites, and they also enjoyed a couple margaritas. star sightings in carmel this year include taylor swift and travis kelce. also, reba mcentire and jason momoa, whom you keep going to carmel and no one talks about me. walk around. we were going to show the last time you were there, but then he came in. so it kind of, you know, we know you're private. that's it. oh no no, no, i keep eating caramels. that's what a little different. well, we don't have to go all the way to carmel by the sea in order to get a little. yeah, we're getting some relief today. it's going to be great to head into the weekend with lower temperatures coming in. and we have views like this. take a look at our live camera in san jose, where we see a few clouds there in the distance. but overall it is a clear start and it is a little bit warmer this morning in the upper 60s as we're getting this thursday going, we're headed for the
5:22 am
upper 80s for today in cupertino it will be 93 degrees. so there still will be some heat in spots, and we're up to 94. in gilroy today. one of the hotter spots in the south county will be morgan hill. and then for oakland today, look at that 77 with a breezy wind and sunshine. but as you make your way over toward walnut creek, we're still in the 90s today. but the good thing is that we're not seeing any highs over 100 degrees. mostly in the 90s for the interior, east bay and redwood city, we're going to see a high of 85, a little warm there compared to the 66 and half moon bay and san francisco in the upper 60s and low 70s downtown, up to 71 degrees for this afternoon. and napa 89 will be your high while in clear lake. it will be 99. but then for mill valley, we're at 78 degrees. so you can see the range and temperatures. we'll see today. our typical microclimates where the coastline is nice and cool, but then as you make your way farther inland, it's going to be
5:23 am
a lot hotter. and gilroy warm temperatures today. but look at the changes coming. our way for tomorrow and into the next several days. our high temperatures will only reach into the mid to upper seconds, and looking into next week, there will be a gradual warm up by the end of the forecast. next weekend a little bit warmer, so we're going to enjoy the cool down while it lasts. getting ready for those temperatures that will reach into the 80s over the next few days. and mike seems like it's a calm commute out. there it is. there was a traffic break on that richmond bridge eastbound. a construction crew cleared without incident and no slowing little. oh, there we go. a little bit of slowing for 37. just kicked off in the last few seconds. overall, we're looking at a nice smooth drive, including the tri-valley. except for 680 crashes reported around bernal. we'll check that out. back to you. thank you mike. all right, 523 for you this morning celebrating the landmark law banning discrimination against people with disabilities. up next, here on today in the bay, we hear from one bay area woman
5:24 am
whose life forever changed that day and the strug law that
5:25 am
5:26 am
banned discrimination against people with disabilities, and it changed the lives of people like nikki brown, booker of oakland. she has been confined to a wheelchair since childhood
5:27 am
because of rheumatoid arthritis. she says the ada opened her world to employment, and it also gave her equal physical access to public buildings, allowing her to go to college and hold a number of jobs. but she says america has a long way to go. as you can see in the graphic here, the us government finds that only 1 in 5 disabled people were employed last year. that compares with 65% of people without disabilities. the 2023 unemployment rate for people with disabilities was just over 7%, which is more than double the national average. i still think that people see people with disabilities as like, unable to care for themselves, unable to, do things, to work, to be like a really real contributor to, to society. and that's just simply not true, nikki works for the borealis
5:28 am
philanthropy. the group helps connect grant dollars with organizations that help people with disabilities. you can learn more at borealis philanthropy.org. 527 right now and next, the top stories we're following today, including an update on that fast moving wildfire in northern california. new video just into our newsroom showing the utter destruction overnight. the san francisco democratic party is endorsing their pick in the hotly contested mayoral race here in the city. up ahead, we'll tell you who their sole endorsement is going to stayith us w

introducing togo's new barbecue beef sandwich. it's piled high with tender beef that's slow cooked and smothered in tangy memphis style barbecue sauce. it's no fuss, no muss.

just tons of flavor. the best barbecue beef is only a togo's. try one today. wildfire explodes overnight in northern california. several homes are now destroyed, and thousands of people were forced from their homes. an update on containment as crews from up and down the state rushed to help. plus, the race for san francisco mayor heats up. we are live with a major endorsement. one candidate just received as all the contenders in that packed field race try to stand out to voters. the energy in the city is pretty electric right now, and only going to continue to get better, so i'm excited to experience this and obviously hopefully go win a gold medal, going for the gold. bay area, representing in paris ahead of
5:32 am
the opening ceremony will break down. the competition's already underway as we look live at the city of lights. this is today in the bay. like, is it the city of lights? yes yes, it is with authority. thanks so much for joining us. i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia is off this morning, and i'm marcus washington. we do want to get right to breaking news this morning. fast moving wildfire triggering hundreds of evacuation orders in butte county overnight. it started yesterday, just after 3 p.m. east of chico in upper bidwell park. we know it has destroyed multiple homes. and some of this video showing what is believed to be a propane tank exploding in a fully engulfed home. as of this morning, it has grown to 45,000 acres. governor newsom saying that crews from across the state are on their way to help out. let's get right to meteorologist kari hall. kari conditions for those firefighters. what are they like this morning? yeah, it's going
5:33 am
to be a little bit better as we go into today. it's been super hot. and so we're seeing a cooler trend coming as we go into the next couple of days. as we take a look out there. currently it's in the upper 60s in san jose, so we are still seeing that milder morning. and then as we go into the afternoon, temperatures won't warm up as quickly and spots like dublin, where we see the morning in the upper 60s at 8:00 at noon, it's at 83 and only in the upper 80s, low 90s for this afternoon. compare that to the triple digits that we had yesterday. we're not seeing as much of a high heat risk for the bay area, and our temperatures continue to come down with san francisco's high headed for 71. in san jose, it will be the upper 80s for today. so we will talk about a cooldown coming for the weekend. but mike may have a problem in the tri valley. yeah, i was really worried. well, i'm still worried about people in the crash because i don't know about injuries, but i do know they've been able to clear this crash, this top one southbound, 680 at bernal. it was blocking
5:34 am
all lanes for a few minutes. just got the update. they've got everything to the shoulder there. and the second crash is over on the shoulder already at sunol. so you will be distracted south from pleasanton into sunol for south 680. that commute direction is bogged down, but there should be improvement again because all lanes are cleared now out of that area. as we look to the next other bit of the commute, we're looking at a little slowing in the north bay and that's pretty typical of highway 37 and highway four. just starting to see a little break tap as you come in through bay point back to you. thanks, mike. well, now to decision 2024 and the race for mayor in san francisco. the city's democratic leadership has just announced an endorsement. today in the bay ginger conejero saab is live there this morning. ginger san francisco has ranked choice voting, but the committee members made one clear choice. correct that is correct. good morning, chris and marcus. the 32 member central committee could have chosen to rank the
5:35 am
candidates as voters will in november, but they did not do that. they they chose rather one sole endorsement in incumbent mayor london breed. now the endorsement is a big win for breed, as she faces four other high profile candidates, many of whom are challenging her over the current state of the city, and issues including sheltering the in house, increasing office vacancies and the opioid crisis. breed has announced her plans to address the city's biggest issues, including her vision to revitalize downtown, which has been plagued with an exodus of commercial business. that area is responsible for 70% of the city's jobs. now. mayor breed sat down recently with our own marcus washington here, she is on why it is crucial for san francisco to bounce back. tourism for san francisco is not just people who fly into the city. even though our pre-pandemic flights have increased by over 100% for international flights and 97%
5:36 am
for domestic flights, it's also about the bay area and people choosing san francisco as a destination for weekend activities, or make it a weekend in san francisco. go to pier 39, go to the zoo. like, this is really about our economic recovery. as well. promising. this is now. we also spoke recently with san francisco supervisor aaron peskin on today in the bay. he is also running for mayor, and he, along with former san francisco mayor mark farrell, garnered votes from the democratic party in the initial rounds of last night's committee meeting. here he is speaking on finding solutions to the city's unhoused. any candidate promising to solve homelessness in six months, using sweeps just frankly, isn't being straightforward and honest. sweeps don't actually solve the underlying problems of homelessness. they just move it around from neighborhood to neighborhood. and we've seen that. now, the conversations around a vision for san
5:37 am
francisco continue today, our 8 a.m. streaming show, will, will have former mayor mark farrell on you can watch that on roku, amazon tv and other platforms. now, as far as mayor breed is concerned, she will hold a press conference in the city at alamo square park at 11 this morning. we expect her to have celebratory comments about that endorsement coming from the city's democratic party. we'll bring you the latest on that online and on air at nbc, or on air and online, rather, i should say, at nbcbayarea.com. guys, back to you. big move indeed in that race. all right. thank you, ginger. now we want to take you to the nation's capitol, a live look here at the white house. that's where happening today, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is scheduled to meet with president biden. the prime minister also expected to speak today with vice president kamala harris in a separate meeting. now, she did not attend his address yesterday to congress. the address on capitol hill sparked protests across the u.s, thousands taking part in
5:38 am
washington, where things got tense at times as police used pepper spray to disperse that crowd. streets surrounding the capitol were blocked off for hours. protesters also gathering in san francisco. and this is where we have what we did have some video here we go. this is from nbc bay area sky ranger showing the heavy police presence there, barricading outside the israeli consulate. that's where activists earlier tried to block access to the building. those activists cleared that area well before noon. also today, state supreme court justices are expected to announce a ruling in the battle over proposition 2020 or 22. i should say the measure voters approved in 2020 defining gig economy workers as independent contractors, rideshare and delivery companies supported that measure, which was a response to a supreme court ruling requiring companies to classify gig workers as regular employees. since then, drivers and delivery workers have continued to challenge the constitutionality of prop 22. when arguments were presented
5:39 am
earlier this year, the court seemed poised to uphold the measure. new this morning, a north bay wine conglomerate is declaring bankruptcy just four years after going public. vintage wine estates, based in santa rosa, it owns more than 30 wine brands, many in wine country, including layer cake and clo, as well as pingus. now, the company has also been struggling for months now. vintage also announced plans to, delist, delist from the stock market with its share value hovering near zero for weeks now. well, get ready for the return of a south bay summer favorite, the santa clara county fair, which opens today. this is actually the fair's 80th anniversary, and it will celebrate 80 years of south bay innovation, from farming to technology. the fair runs over two weekends this weekend and next weekend from thursday
5:40 am
through sunday at the fairgrounds in san jose. doors open at 3:00 this afternoon. today, only children under 12 are free. the good thing about it, kerry, i know you monitor what's going on with the weather. it should be nice because some of those days for some of those fairs, this is so hot. but today should be pretty pleasant. yeah, it's still going to be in the upper 80s for san jose. so warm during the middle of the afternoon at 3:00. but we are going to have some cooler weather as we go into our weekend, and for tomorrow. it will only be in the low 80s and saturday 70s so it's going to be much nicer. maybe if you wait until later on this evening. if you can go once those temperatures start to drop in san francisco, we do have a cool weekend ahead and we have the marathon on saturday and sunday. we have events going on and our temperatures early in the morning start out with fog and in the mid 50s and will only reach into the low 60s as we go throughout the day. so that's some great weather for those
5:41 am
athletes there. and at palisades tahoe this is actually a live view of the camera. it is just gorgeous and we've had some warm weather, but it will continue to cool off over the next few days. going from upper 70s tomorrow to low 70s on saturday, and on sunday it will be up to about 73 with our overnight lows in the low 40s. if you're going to la this weekend, it's going to also be warm there, but temperatures will be coming down going from some mid 80s tomorrow for a high to upper 70s by the end of the weekend. so we're all in for a cool down. so we'll talk about the bay area coming up in a few minutes. mike, you're starting with two crashes in the tri valley, right? we had some movement. we were hoping for some changes. and i do like the changes i've been seeing as far as the pattern with these sensors, the speed sensors improving, i know it bogs down as you're getting past stoneridge southbound, 680 off the dublin interchange. you see the mall right there marked on our map. we do have a backup that starts there, but it starts to ease. see how these speed sensors get better. so they're passing the crash on the shoulder at bernal. and another
5:42 am
big rig on the shoulder at sunol boulevard. so the commute is actually improving over the last few minutes, but there's more traffic coming in. feeding steadily out of the altamont and off the dublin interchange. there may be a roadside fire north 101 at 880, so watch for a traffic break blocking one lane as you travel north and the morning commute builds back to you. all right. thanks, mike. all right. now what may be the boat of the future is making a whole lot of waves. up next, we'll take a ride aboard one electric powered vessel, changing the game for life on the water, and we'll break down some of the challenges. still facing the california startup that designed it. plus, the us women's soccer team about to kick off their first match at the summer games in paris. the watch party that will be hosting here in thsouth bay.e the uppes

charges were filed, but police are still investigating. the peyton's place coaching staff says the player involved is no longer with the team and is, quote, getting help. and new video this morning of an armed robbery and shooting at a san jose smoke shop, which happened back on july 6th at the dab society glass gallery on stevens creek boulevard. the owner shared surveillance video with us when two armed and masked men went in, held him at gunpoint along with another employee. the owner says they demanded his watch before trying to grab the gun and running to the back. one of the men shot the owner in the hip and stole his rolex and his chain. no arrests so far. 546 this morning, your next trip on the water may be a little quieter. that's because there's a new type of boat making waves in the industry. our scott mcgrew takes a look at the technology and the possible political biases that may hinder its commercial success. good

morning. very happy thursday to you. i got a chance to check out a new sort of boat, an electric boat made by a company called arc, created by former tesla and spacex engineers, among others. the most remarkable thing about it is how quiet it is. just the wind and the sound of people having fun. i spoke with arcs ceo mitch lee. it is an incredible experience. when you go put that throttle down and you could still hold a conversation at 25 miles an hour, much less five miles an hour. that's such a novel experience for being out on a boat where you're typically essentially sitting on top of your gas engine that's creating this huge roar and drowning out any sort of conversation. well, that's kind of the fun thing about boating, too, is you're out on the lake, you're in nature, there's a nice breeze. and you haven't got a, you know, a diesel engine that's stinking up the place. it's a very social activity. and electric makes so much sense for so many different

reasons. but yes, conversation and your ability to actually have fun with your friends while you're out there now, just because something's better doesn't mean people will necessarily buy it. electric motorcycles for instance, make sense? they're quick. they're silent. they use no gas, but electric motorcycles have not captured much market share, and there's been pushback against the electric powered industry. donald trump recently condemned the entire idea of an electric boat. let me. i gotta look at my notes here because i want to make sure i get this right. president trump kind of went on this strange riff about electric boats saying they only run for ten minutes. and if you sink, you get electrocuted or eaten by a shark. i assume most of that is not accurate, what i'd say is, i would love to invite anyone out onto our boat to experience it, and you get a full day of usage. that is something that we really took as a design requirement at kind of a foundational level. when we

started this, you said you'd invite anybody on your boat and you've had some celebrities invest in your some venture capitalists, but also some celebrities invest in your boat. yeah, i think there's a lot of enthusiasm about what we're doing. it's, you know, boating is a lifestyle. and what we're doing is making that lifestyle so much more enjoyable for everyone that likes being out on the water and allow people to enjoy that or enable people to enjoy that water responsibly and along the way that has attracted the enthusiasm of yes, some celebrities and, a lot of high powered investors as well. all right. well, mitch lee, i wish you luck with your your boat fair winds following season. thanks for being with us. this. absolutely. thanks for having me make it better for fishing. yeah. don't scare the fish away. all right. so long. we're counting down the days, but we are counting down the minutes before tomorrow's opening ceremony for the summer olympic games in paris. want to give you a live look? this morning, the

that too was really hot. so we're on our way towards some cooler temperatures going into the weekend. and it's going to be a little bit nicer tomorrow. but we're still warming up in walnut creek. we're starting out this morning temperatures in the upper 60s. but look at this beautiful sunrise with those clouds overhead as we are getting out the door. don't let that distract you in san leandro, we're in the low 60s for the next hour or two, at 7:00, 64 degrees and 66 degrees at 9 to 10:00. going throughout the day, we're only going to make it into the upper 70s at 2:00. we're reaching that high temperature into 3:00. and then as we go toward five, the wind picks up. the temperatures will start to drop, and we're going into our evening with some very comfortable air, only at about 72 degrees at 7:00 this evening. and in the south bay. we're still going to be very warm today with los gatos reaching a high of 94 degrees 92. in east san jose and downtown san jose
5:55 am
in the upper 80s. for the east bay, it's mid to upper 90s. so once again, we are still going to feel some warm valley temperatures. but along the bay, along the inner bay, it's going to be in the upper 70s for oakland and along the coastline. it's in the 60s, so still a wide range and temperatures even from half moon bay to palo alto. you have a 20 degree range in those highs. and in the san francisco area downtown, we're going to be in the upper low 70s. there and then for the north bay upper 90s still for clear lake and ukiah. but in santa rosa, we're getting enough of that breeze to only see that high temperature make it up to 89 degrees. we're going to see some cooler weather coming in for the weekend. we're going from upper 80s to 70s from tomorrow through sunday. it's going to be a beautiful weekend and only slightly warmer as we go toward the beginning of next week, eventually warming up into the upper 80s and there's no extreme high heat ahead. but next weekend will definitely be
5:56 am
warmer than this weekend. coming up, a look at our 7-day forecast mid 90s for those spots inland today. but then mid 80s tomorrow and the weekend is looking fantastic. san francisco though is going to be chilly and we're not going to see as much of the sunshine as we'll see today. like you're following up on a fire in san jose, right? we had that fire alongside 101 at 880, and then we had a traffic break showing traffic bogging down here, along with the morning first burst of traffic. both have cleared. so 101 moves very smoothly through the area. and the traffic. the first burst is starting to ease off. this is a few minutes longer than we'd expect to see any slowing, but that live shot showed you a good recovery. heading up toward oakland road. there's another fire at 280 at mclaughlin, and so i was concerned about another roadside fire. but speed sensors are great there and great speed recovery. south 680 the earlier crash. there may just be a truck on the shoulder near sunol boulevard. back to you all right. thanks, mike. well, happening now, some major changes in the works for southwest airlines for starter.
