new challenge. >> and this all comes amid a backdrop of protests in washington over israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu's visit. president biden is set to meet with him today after netanyahu's defiant speech to congress. we've got it all covered. let's get started with nbc's peter alexander, at his post at the white house. peter, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. this speech last night really marked the beginning of what for president biden will be an extended farewell. the president speaking about uniting the country by putting what's best for democracy over his desire for a second term, while underscoring the urgency of this moment and the stakes of the election this fall. the great thing about america, he said, is here kings and dictators do not rule, the people do. history, he said, is in your hands. >> i revere this office, but i love my country more. >> reporter: in an historic oval office address, president biden detailing the most consequential decision of his lengthy political career. >> it's been the honor of my

inside the oval office, the president's family appearing to comfort him afterwards. the first lady later sharing this handwritten note on social media, thanking those who never wavered and encouraging her husband's supporters to now put that trust in harris. this morning the harris campaign releasing its first video set to the song "freedom" by beyonce. on thenz, in indianapolis, she vowed to fight for reproductive rights. >> and when i am president of the united states and when congress passes a law to restore those freedoms, i will sign it into law. >> reporter: harris could be close to another high-profile endorsement, from former president obama. four people familiar with the discussions tell nbc news he's expected to throw his weight behind her soon. all of it as harris is facing an august 7th deadline to name a running mate. among the top contenders, arizona senator mark kelly -- >> would you accept? >> again, this is not about me.

>> reporter: and pennsylvania governor, josh shapiro. >> she kicked butt and she earned the support and she earned the nomination and i'm proud to support her. >> reporter: and back to last night's address, the president spoke about decency and respect, asking americans, does character in public life still matter? and after his speech, a celebratory scene in the rose garden here, where hundreds of white house staffers greeted the president with cheers, aides telling me it was both joyful and bittersweet, and perhaps, savannah, fittingly for this president, the white house served everyone ice cream, a biden favorite. savannah? >> peter, thank you very much. meanwhile, donald trump is weighing in on that address this morning after holding his first rally since president biden announced his exit from the 2024 race. mr. trump also unleashed new attack lines against his likely opponent, vice president kamala harris. nbc's garrett haake is covering the trump campaign for us. garrett, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, craig, good morning. president trump watched

president biden's speech last on board his campaign plane last night and released his own negative review on social media a short time afterwards. it comes as mr. trump's attention seems to be divided between attacking the president he's bee he's been running against for years now and a new opponent he'll likely face in november. >> reporter: new political landscape, donald trump holding nothing back. attacking his white house successor overnight. on social media, slamming president biden's prime-time address, calling it, quote, barely understandable and so bad. and earlier, at his first rally since mr. biden dropped out of the race -- >> three days ago, we officially defeated the worst president in the history of our country. >> reporter: the former president also shifting focus to the democrat's new de facto nominee, vice president harris. >> kamala, you're fired! get out of here! >> reporter: trying to tie her to biden policies on immigration and inflation. >> lying kamala harris has been the ultra-liberal driving force behind every single biden catastrophe. >> reporter: mr. trump also joking about shedding the more

unifying tone he attempted to strike at last week's republican national convention. >> i was supposed to be nice. they say, something happened to me when i got shot. i became nice. and when you're dealing with these people, they're very dangerous people. you can't be too nice. >> reporter: it comes as the former president's running mate, senator j.d. vance, is in the spotlight for some of his past comments on parenthood, including this speech in 2021. >> when you go to the polls in this country as a parent, you should have more of an ability to speak your voice in our democratic republic than people who don't have kids. >> reporter: and this from the same year drawing the most attention, referring to harris and other prominent democrats. >> we're effectively run in this country by a bunch of childless cat ladies, who are miserable at their own lives. >> reporter: the backlash coming from the political world to even hollywood. jennifer aniston posting she, quote, truly can't believe the comments.

and now kirstin imhoff, former ex-wife, writing for over ten years, kamala has been a co-parent with doug and i. >> and one thing to watch in this new race, mr. trump says his agreement to debate once more in september is effectively void because it was a deal with joe biden, but he's told reporters he would consider multiple debates against vice president harris if the two campaigns can strike a deal on terms. >> thank you, garrett. >> let's turn to kristen welker, moderator of "meet the press." let's start right there. the republicans had obviously designed a campaign to compete against joe biden. now it's kamala harris. have they figured out how they want to take on this vp candidate? >> savannah, it's so fascinating. we're sort of watching former president trump try to figure out what his attack lines will be in realtime. in some ways, he seems to be throwing the kitchen sink at her and trying to see what sticks and what fits. it's not clear that he's really landed on a clear line of attack just yet. and it comes as polls show,

look, she is frankly more competitive against former president trump than president biden was. now, it could be days, if not weeks until the polls really give us a clear sense of the state of this race, but she's got two big inflection points coming up, savannah. of course, her pick of a running mate and the democratic national convention. all of this aimed at reintroducing herself to voters. who might be spectacle of her, savannah. >> i misspoke saying vp candidate. it's on the brain. she's got to pick a running mate. they're vetting several people. and you have word this morning about former president obama endorsing kamala harris sooner rather than later. >> well, that's right. first, let's talk about obama. we are told and our team, who's been working on this, has been told that he has been advising her behind the scenes. they are preparing for a big splashy endorsement. so that's going to be another moment for her to really showcase who she is and try to

reintroduce herself, while tying herself to, of course, arguably someone who is incredibly popular in the democratic party. in terms of running mates, i'm told josh shapiro, a name to watch, peter just mentioned him, obviously, governor of pennsylvania. he is someone, savannah, who gets high marks with democrats and republicans. so he's got that bipartisan appeal. north carolina governor roy cooper. he's also from a critical swing state. she has a real relationship with him. the two served as attorney generals at the same time. and then, senator mark kelly from arizona. all of them moderate, white men. someone who could offset that charge from former president trump that she is too extreme. we'll be watching closely, savannah. >> all right, kristen, thank you very much. we turn now to today's closely-watched meeting at the white house. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu sitting down with president biden, vice president harris, and families of american hostages after using a fiery address to congress to defend

the ongoing war against hamas. his speech drawing protests inside and outside the capitol. nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent, an zree ya mitchell joins us with more on this. andrea, good morning. >> good morning, craig. netanyahu is likely to face a grilling by those american hostage families today, with family members now dismissing his defiant speech to congress as what they call political theater, blasting him for failing to commit to a hostage release deal now on the table. >> reporter: israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu met with protests on his consequential trip to washington. the embattled prime minister delivering a defiant speech to congress. >> no matter how long it takes, no matter how difficult the road ahead, israel will not relent, israel will not bend. >> reporter: netanyahu calling for total victory against hamas. >> the war in gaza could end tomorrow, if hamas surrenders, disarms, and returns all the hostages. >> reporter: in the gallery,

noah argamani, a freed israeli hostage looking on. along with israeli soldiers wounded in gaza. as netanyahu spoke, thousands of protesters from a variety of anti--war groups, rallied near anti-semitic slurs outside union station and running a palestinian flag up the flag pole, burning an effigy of netanyahu and burning american flags, clashing with police who used pepper spray. netanyahu accused anti-war protesters of being allied with hamas. >> these protesters stand with them. they should be ashamed of themselves! >> reporter: and claimed many were funded by iran. >> you have officially become iran's useful idiots! >> reporter: more than three dozen democratic lawmakers boycotted the speech. others sat in silent protest. capitol police arrested six demonstrators in the gallery, some of them hostage family members. >> sign a deal and release all of the hostages now. >> reporter: under growing pressure to end the war,

netanyahu heads to the white house today to meet with president biden, the families of american hostages, and vice president harris. family members say they'll press him to sign a hostage deal now, after israel walked away from talks until next week. >> why is it that he is delaying signing this agreement, when the entire israeli defense establishment, intelligence community, and his own defense minister have already said publicly that all of the conditions are ripe to sign right now? >> today, the president and secretary of state blinken are going to try to iron out those remaining obstacles to the hostage deal with netanyahu, before he meets with vice president harris, who declined to preside over the speech, as is customary, with an eye on the campaign, netanyahu will then go to mar-a-lago tomorrow to see donald trump, whom he thanked expansively in his speech. craig? w our chief foreign affairs

correspondent, andrea mitchell. thank you. much more to get to, including new details on the attempted assassination of donald trump. the director of the fbi testifying before congress and revealing the gunman searched online for information on the jfk assassination just one week before trump was shot. nbc's capitol hill correspondent, nbc's ryan nobles has got that story this morning. ryan, good mi ning. >> reporter: hey, savannah, good morning. the fbi is leading the criminal investigation into the shooting and director christopher wray told lawmakers, the agency is still trying to figure out what the gunman's motive was. and while the investigation is in its early stages, he was still able to reveal plenty of new information of what they've discovered. >> reporter: this newly released video shows a new angle of the terrifying moments shots were fired at donald trump during his rally in pennsylvania. you can see frightened people running for their lives. and we're learning just days before, thomas crooks was on the internet, searching for

information about the assassination of president john f. kennedy. >> on july 6th, he did a google search for, quote, how far away was oswald from kennedy. >> reporter: that revelation from fbi director christopher wray, among many new details wray provided in his testimony, including the discovery that the gunman may have had a firearm with a collapsible stock, which would have made the weapon easier to hide as he made his way through the crowd. >> we haven't yet found anybody with firsthand observation of him with the weapon, walking around beforehand. >> reporter: but while they have learned quite a bit about the shooter, there's still much they don't know. >> i think it's fair to say that we do not yet have a clear picture of his motive. >> reporter: including if he used a ladder to get to the roof of the building where the shooting took place. >> we did not find the ladder at the scene. >> reporter: and why he flew a drone over the site about two

hours before the rally. >> our hypothesis at this point, experts think he would have been live streaming it. >> reporter: wray says eight bullet cartridges were found on the roof with the gunman's body. the director testified he opened fire seconds after he noticed a local law enforcement officer on the ground had spotted him, adding that crooks was not on their radar. >> we did not have any information about the shooter. he was not in our holdings before the shooting. >> reporter: director wray also offered up the possibility that the former president may not have suffered a direct hit from a bullet, but instead some shrapnel may have grazed his ear. trump has not released any of the medical records from his treatment at the hospital. >> looking ahead, the new acting director of the secret service, ronald rowe, is expected to testify in a joint senate hearing next tuesday. it would come just a week after former director, kimberly cheatle resigned from her position after her testimony before congress. savannah? >> all right. ryan nobles in washington. thank you, ryan. 7:19. switching gears now. mr. roker is here. we're talking about some rain?

>> that's right, heavy rain and could be flooding for some folks. we're looking at 17 million people, flood watches from corpus chris tis, houston, on into southwestern coastal louisiana and the southeastern atlantic coast for the carolinas. we'll watch this system, basically stationary front, just kind of meandering through the southeast. heavy rain from the carolinas into the western gulf. it's going to produce a lot of storms, heat and humidity will fuel more storms tomorrow. the highest flood risk will be along the carolina coast. in fact, we've got a moderate flood risk from just north of corpus christie into lake charles and a flood risk for the carolinas as well. some places in texas and louisiana could see upwards of 5 inches. and along the carolina coast, we could be looking at anywhere from 5 to 6 inches of rain. we'll get to your local forecast in the next 30 seconds.

sanchez and here's a look at our top stories, including breaking news from governor newsom, who issued a new order. he is reportedly calling on state leaders to begin dismantling homeless encampments in a new york times tweet, he is said to be asking for it to happen with urgency and also dignity. this is in response to the recent grants pass supreme court decision on homeless encampments, giving governments more leeway in responding to people who are unhoused. i'm ginger conejero saab in san francisco, where the city's democratic party is endorsing their pick for mayor in a hotly contested race, the 32 member committee has chosen to endorse incumbent mayor london breed. that is their sole endorsement. mayor breed is holding a press conference later this morning at alamo square park at 11. we'll bring you the latest on air and online at nbcbayarea.com. and we might be able to give the air conditioner a break. meteorologist kari hall here

the tabloids destroyed the relationship with your family? >> i think there's -- that's certainly a central piece to it. that's a hard question to answer, because anything i say about my family results in a torrent of abuse from the press. >> reporter: framing the battle as a mission, but his relatives may not have agreed. in a previous interview with itv news, harry said kidnapping charles called his decision to take on the press a suicide mission. >> i think everyone that's played out has shown people what the truth of the matter is. for me, the mission continues. but it has -- yes, it's caused, as you say, part of a rift. >> reporter: in recent years, prince harry has launched three invasion of privacy lawsuits against british tabloids. back in december, tabloid company mirror group was found liable in one of those suits, writing in a statement where historical wrongdoing took place, we apologize

about some of the state troopers responsible for investigating her for murder. this morning, a new twist in the murder case that's captivated the country. >> it's happening, guys! it's happening! >> reporter: two massachusetts state troopers who testified in the trial of karen read, the 44-year-old accused of backing her suv into her boyfriend, boston police officer, john o'keefe, are now the subject of an internal affairs investigation. according to a police statement. during the trial, detective actually testified read made dozens of calls to o'keefe the night he was called. >> there were 53 phone calls from miss reid to a phone number associated with o'keefe. >> while another sergeant testified that he questioned read hours after she found o'keefe's body in the snow. >> she stated that she's willing to answer our questions, but doesn't want to go into too much detail. >> reporter: both officers remain on active duty while they're being investigated. though it's unclear if the probe

olympics is amazing for us and home country is very special. >> here in america, we like to throw a good watch party and like a good theme, like taco tuesday is big here. but for people watching paris and the olympics, help us with the table, chef. we'll get to the food in a second, but how do you make it so parisian and special. start with the flowers, maybe? >> for sure. we want to keep it fresh and light. i love to have flowers on the table. it's always a nice touch to evaluate your setting. so right now, we have hydrangeas. they're very much in season. they're beautiful. we do love a good hydrangea. they can be very sturdy. you can keep them for weeks if you take good care of them. and also some very colorful item on the table. we have these gorgeous big tomatoes, that can actually open up. you can do a lot of stuff with that. nice napkins, as well. you always want to have sort of like a very natural, easy, breezy napkin fold. i like to just fold them in two and have a very simple -- they

you. good morning. it's 856. i'm marcus washington. breaking news this morning. governor gavin newsom issuing a new order. he's reportedly calling on leaders across the state to begin dismantling homeless encampments in new york times tweet, it said he's asking for it to happen with urgency and dignity. this all comes in response to the recent grants pass supreme court decision on homeless encampments, giving governments more leeway in responding to the unhoused. also happening now the fast moving wildfire is triggering hundreds of evacuation orders in butte county. this is just east of chico. new video showing several of those homes destroyed. the park fire started yesterday afternoon. this morning it has already grown to 45,000 acres.
