size near chico. closer to home, firefighters now have the upper hand on a fire near the altamont pass. the latest on the firefight, the evacuations and the impact. also breaking overnight, vice president kamala harris scores a major endorsement. the way this could help shape her campaign as the new 2024 presidential race heats up and former president donald trump reveals more about a possible debate against harris. plus, as the opening ceremony is set to kick off on the olympic games in paris, a major network sabotage affecting the commute outside the city. our team is live in paris with these brand new developments and the excitement surrounding our bay area athletes, this is today in the bay. and a good morning to you on this friday. i'm marcus washington and i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for laura garcia. the countdown is just about over. in
5:02 am
just a few hours, the 2024 paris olympics opening ceremony will thrill fans around the world. but ahead of what should be a magnificent event, we're also following breaking news out of france. yeah serious. in a series of coordinated attacks providing major disruptions to high speed rail routes connecting to paris today in the bay's jessica aguirre live for us this morning near the arc de triomphe. and jessica, this is definitely not the start of the olympic organizers or fans wanted to see. no, they've been getting ready for these olympics for three years, and they've really tried to mitigate any possibility of having any type of violence or anything that could mar this opening ceremony. so french officials certainly were not planning for something like this happened, but it did happen at about 4 a.m. this morning, the french transportation minister calling it a coordinated act targeting several high speed rail lines impacting travel in and out of paris. it's been described as an
5:03 am
arson attack on the national railway lines. and we have just learned just a few minutes ago that a far left anarchist group is being blamed for this intentional attack. it caused chaos on the lines impacting 800,000 passengers, many trains canceled, stranding passengers in stations, the prime minister said law enforcement has been mobilized. now this goes. this happened just as the lockdown here for the opening ceremonies was taking place. so i can tell you here i'm at the arc de triomphe, and the reason i'm here is because we can't be at the trocadero station where we were before, which is right by the eiffel tower and along the river where that opening ceremony is taking place. we're at the trocadero. where? pardon me, we're here at the arc de triomphe. and i can tell you that in just the last hour, we've seen huge police presence here. barricades going up, streets being closed off on the walk here. i saw more than 100 police officers in this area. so we are in a high alert situation
5:04 am
here. and that's because that opening ceremony will be taking place in just a short time. let me show you what it looks like in the stands right now. we're about a 1.5 mile from where that opening ceremony is going to take place. spectator stands are lining the river, where dignitaries and 100 heads of state and some 300,000 spectators will see 10,000 athletes from around the world make their ceremonial entrance for the parade of nations. us flagbearers lebron james, tennis star coco gauff. the athletes will be on 94 boats, accompanied by 35 security boats and the french say it will be a spectacle to behold. now, even before what we saw today as that attack on the railway system, this outdoor spectacle was a gargantuan security challenge. 45,000 french police are on the ground here. we're talking military, police, army manning checkpoints, roving the streets. the gendarmerie, which is the military police, also using surveillance and technology to
5:05 am
spot any threats. the goal is obviously to prevent anything from marring these olympics. but now we see what happened with the railway, now let's talk about the athletes. come. we talked about the athletes and canonbury. he is the son of legendary former warrior and nba legend rick barry. canada is making his olympic debut in three by three basketball. and this morning he talked about he talked about what it's like to be here. okay. so he talked about everyone excited about the games. again. we're in a high security alert system right now. and so, there is a no fly zone that will be going into effect in just a short time. and again, the opening ceremony will begin in a couple of hours. we're going to continue to monitor the situation from here, and hopefully it'll go out without a hitch, as french officials have been preparing for. back to you live in paris for us this morning, jessica aguirre. jessica. thank you. well, as

jess said, the day finally here, the opening ceremony. you can watch it all morning. this at 1030. starting then. and then watch an encore performance in prime time at 730 tonight. all right. here on nbc bay area. well, breaking back here in the u.s, vice president kamala harris whirlwind week continues as she scores a major endorsement. her campaign just releasing this video showing her getting the backing of both barack and michelle obama. we called to say michelle. and i couldn't be prouder to endorse you and to do everything we can to get you through this election and into the oval office. oh my goodness, michelle, barack, this means so much to me. i am looking forward to doing this with the two of you. doug and i both. and now sources close to nbc news telling us that aides to obama, as well as harris, have discussed them appearing together on the campaign trail at some point. meantime, harris continues to say that she welcomes a on stage showdown

as the bay area. we're starting out this morning with low 60s in palo alto, san jose at 65 degrees. and as we go throughout the day in walnut creek, going from 60s to warming up quite a bit, but as we check out livermore, it's going to be a nice one. and our temperatures go from upper 60s to only the mid 80s for today. that's a big drop in temperatures, and we're going to see san jose's high at 79 degrees and some upper 70s and 80s for much of the bay area. big change from those triple digits we had just a few days ago. and mike, you've been giving us places where we can find we're looking for the best we can find it. in fact, a number of the top ten best prices in the state are in the bay area. san jose still holds the lead in the state with 363. we'll call out the 365 still in the top five best in santa clara. here with platinum gas on washington street next. best on our chart is livermore 387 at dimond gas and mart. that's the one on south front road and in

5:21 am
ago. and we're still up to about 84 in san jose, which will be comfortably warm. we're going to see a high of 87 in morgan hill and much of the east bay. remember when this was 103, 106? yeah, we're at 90 today. and 88 degrees in danville and in oakland, 69 degrees there. so we're seeing some 60s much more widespread across the coast into the east bay. but palo alto will reach a high of into the low 80s. and in san francisco staying in the 60s. today, very gusty winds coming off of the ocean. and we're going to see for the north bay those cooling breezes only making the high in santa rosa up to 82 degrees. looking ahead, we're going from low 80s to low 70s. tomorrow. the coolest day in the forecast. and it will be windy. we'll see some more clouds coming in, but we're also going to enjoy some more mild weather throughout the rest of the forecast, gradually stepping up through next week and definitely a warmer weekend
5:22 am
for next weekend compared to what we will see this weekend. temperature wise. looks great for us over the next few days. a nice little cool down, a break from blasting the ac, and we have the natural ac in san francisco that continues over the next several days. and mike, you have one note related to that brush fire. yeah. bob macy reported 580 is open and we see that in fact, most of your morning commute looking pretty calm right now out of the altamont pass 580 westbound. coming in is just fine. eastbound reopened just before 3:00 this morning. so a smooth drive on the freeway itself. you notice this red line blocked out here? altamont pass road is still blocked off in part of the perimeter. again, bob talked about that perimeter going on still as they continue with the fire. it's contained, but it is not necessarily out. so that may force more folks onto 580 westbound. we do see a good slowing through the area coming off of the 205 blend, where folks would have had to get off of the altamont pass road, stretch there and back on to

olympic morning to you on this friday i'm marcus washington and i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for laura garcia. we want to get right to that breaking news. this morning before we get to the olympics. firefighters now monitoring for hot spots after stopping an overnight grass fire that burned hundreds of acres. meteorologist kari hall tracking conditions not only there, but also in butte county where things are much more dire. yeah, but we want to get over to bob redell right now. he's along interstate 580. and bob, what have you been able to learn from firefighters? because i know it was a tough battle there, but they got things under control. yeah. this fire is 100% contained. we're actually along altamont pass road, which is, north of 580, runs parallel here to the altamont pass where you're looking, if you can see now, as we're getting some sunlight, the burn scar from this wildfire that started last night. again, the fire is 100%
5:32 am
contained. you can see those white lights over there. that's a fire crew that's still out here. and officially, they are in mop up mode. but i don't know if you can tell. it is very gusty out here, and there are lots of hot spots, which is why firefighters are still out here and will be out here at least through part of the afternoon. we are at altamont pass road. as i mentioned, this is a windy two lane road that runs parallel to 580 on the north side of the altamont pass. you can see what this fire looked like earlier when it was really going a start around 945 last night when a driver called 911 to report that their car caught fire on the side of 580 north near north flynn road. and i believe that would have been in the westbound direction of 580 with that wind. this fire took off. it burned through 400 acres. and these very dry, grassy hillsides. fortunately this is open land, so there are no structures involved. no people were hurt. and the wind and steep terrain. that just is what really made it
5:33 am
challenging for firefighters. and again, this is another sign that something as small as a car fire can lead to a much bigger problem, like what you had behind me. but again, this fire is out. it is contained, cal fire and alameda county fire department were out here. it might have been another agency as well, but they know what they're doing. this is not they're unfortunately not their first time. they are having to deal with something like this, especially with the high heat we've had out here and those very dry conditions that still exist behind me reporting live here somewhere in the hills near the altamont pass by. i know i'm in alameda county, bob redell today in the bay. thank you, bob. and like you said, we know that it's dry out there. so we are staying on top of that. breaking news in butte county also massive wildfire that now is at 160,000 acres, virtually no containment. that means it's growing on all sides. it is also not clear how many homes have been destroyed, though we've seen them with our own eyes. in
5:34 am
the video, cal fire says 4200 homes are threatened, but as of this morning, the fire burned close to 165,000 acres. it started just a little more than 36 hours ago on the outskirts of chico. authorities do say a man is now under arrest, who they believe started the fire by pushing a burning car down a ravine. not clear what charges he might face. meteorologist kari hall is tracking the conditions that firefighters are dealing with. and this. i mean, it's no surprise that this just exploded in size. yeah, because we've had such hot and dry conditions in this prolonged heat wave that we've had recently, has basically dried things out even more. so we just have to be so careful. and something like this can grow into a fire that becomes over 164,000 acres. and the conditions that the firefighters are dealing with not the best at 73 degrees, we still have very low humidity and those winds every now and then gusting up. but as we take a look at our near surface smoke model and how
5:35 am
this may impact the air quality, those plumes of smoke are just going off the charts there. we don't even have enough colors to show how much smoke is going up into the atmosphere, but it is blowing off towards the east, over toward nevada. and we also have a couple of smaller fires around the bay area that's causing some smoke to come in. as we take that live, look outside in dublin in the distance there where we did have that altamont pass fire. we had the conditions that were gusty, still breezy, but it's also helping to cool those temperatures down and we'll only see mid 70s here for today. and mike, you had one fire related closure. yeah the namesake here. the altamont pass road here. we talked about the altamont pass fire. again. 580 is fully reopened. but as bob was talking about that red line above it, just to the north of the freeway, that's altamont pass road. and the closure starts back at grant line, kind of where that 580 is over on the right side. and so folks will be jumping on to 580 instead of the altamont pass road. and that will add a little more traffic. so that's different for your

the runners were doing the ultra marathon. that is we have a friend who does that. and. oh my goodness. yeah. you have to be. you have to be. it's a lot. yeah. i don't even think the body wants to do that. no. my body yeah. my mind doesn't want to do it that's for sure. but yeah we're going to have some great weather for the runners. a little bit of cool weather, mist, drizzle. i think that's perfect for you. and the temperatures go from upper 50s to lower 60s with some peeks of sunshine. and this is basically the same weather we'll see for both days. so we're starting out with cool weather and not seeing it warm up much. but if you're in san jose, you're going to the santa clara county fair. beautiful weather throughout the weekend. today in the low 80s it was a little warm during the afternoon yesterday, but today it's going to be comfortable and really cool. tomorrow only 73 degrees. we don't get many days like that in july, so we better take it in and enjoy it with some upper 70s expected on sunday. we'll also have the fiesta del mariachi happening on

saturday in san jose. you can enjoy this event with temperatures in the 60s. just bring a jacket. those temperatures will be dropping quickly through the evening. and this is a live look at palisades tahoe this morning. it is gorgeous. we have some really nice weather there as well. hiking today. it will be in the low 80s during the middle of the afternoon, but look at the cooldown that we'll see for the rest of the weekend. with highs in the 70s and overnight lows dropping down to the low 40s. and if your weekend adventures take you to sonoma, going to be in the low 80s today. also cool and breezy there tomorrow with a few more clouds throughout the day and mike, you're saying you may only be able to go one direction? yes, well, definitely one direction. here we'll talk about a couple other spots as well. over here, the bay bridge, you can only go west right here at the toll plaza. let's keep that straight here. and it's moving very nicely. it's friday, so a light volume of traffic there and around the rest of the bay. only highway 37 has that slowing westbound. we do still
5:43 am
have that crash reported here. south 680 around sycamore valley road. but the slowing has cleared up. i think they got all those lanes cleared and no major injuries reported for that crash. we talked about altamont pass road over there, but 580 itself out of the altamont is completely open into the altamont as well. there's no problem now getting into the city. remember tonight the giants are playing, so they're hosting the colorado rockies. we're looking at the oracle park area, the 280 extension, lots of options for mass transit. and you can get into the city. and then if you don't get to this sporting event then you know there's something called the olympics. and we'll probably be showing that a lot down here. this is the one direction we're talking about. niall horan used to be in one direction. you can do traffic flow, but it's going to be very tough in this direction from shoreline all the way from highway 101, past linkedin, google, microsoft, all these companies. right here in this corridor. so things are going to get very congested for the 730 concert. keep that in mind and watch out for my niece because she'll be there as well. just to lots of folk walking to and from that concert. we're looking at the rest of the south

obama's. he had waited until well after most democrats had endorsed her. many of the top democrats have been staying out of the endorsement business, particularly previous endorsements, trying not to put a thumb on the scale as obama once put it. but now that harris is the de facto nominee, she got this phone call. michelle and i couldn't be prouder to endorse you and to do everything we can to get you through this election and into the oval office. oh, my goodness. michelle. barack, this means so much to me. the harris campaign posted this video to social media. democratic delegates will vote in early august to make harris their official candidate for president. in the meantime, harris, working at the white house already. harris met with israeli prime minister benjamin

netanyahu shortly after the israeli leader met with biden. so i just had a frank and constructive meeting with prime minister netanyahu. i told him that i will always ensure that israel is able to defend itself, including from iran and iran backed militias such as hamas and hezbollah. i also expressed with the prime minister my serious concern about the scale of human suffering in gaza, including the death of far too many innocent civilians. and i made clear my serious concern about the dire humanitarian situation there. we're starting to see polls conducted after biden dropped out of the race that pit harris and trump, not in a theoretical matchup, but the actual matchup. and the biggest conclusion anyone can make is harris is performing better than biden did. but it's still a total toss up. latest

new york times poll shows trump ahead, but well within the poll's margin of error. he could be behind. he could be much farther ahead than numbers show. harris's progress, though, is statistically significant and bigger than the margin of error. tellingly, 87% say they approve of biden dropping out of the race. former president trump will not have an event until saturday, when he holds a rally with his pick for vice president jd vance in minnesota. mr. trump has started to cast some doubt as to whether he will participate in the next presidential debate, saying he had agreed to biden last night. harris had a zoom call with 164,000 people. it's being called the largest zoom ever raised, $2 million in 90 minutes. the campaign says netanyahu will meet with trump at trump's mar a lago golf club today. president biden nothing on the calendar. he's headed to camp david this evening. marcus. all right. thank you, scott. 549

for you this morning. and the wait is over and all the pomp and circumstance of the olympics set to begin in just a few hours from now. the paris games opening ceremony gets underway, and tomorrow things really ramp up that includes the start of the diving competitions. joining us now from paris is u.s. olympic diving coach david boudia, and he himself a three time olympian and gold medalist there, having won ten meter platform gold back in 2012. david, so great to have you with us. this morning. look, i know you've got a lot going on. so let's get right to it. so let's talk about that. you are coach now. so to think about that how does it feel to be on the other side during the olympics. and what does it take to put this team together and train them to win gold? you know, mark, it's one of the coolest things about this side of the pool deck, i guess you could say of being a coach is knowing that i've had
5:51 am
three olympics for pairs and athlete, and the emotions and the anxiety that these athletes are going through at this moment and being able to empathize with that. but one of the coolest things is they get to represent and walk out, or i guess, float down the river and represent team usa in opening ceremonies. and, so i think the biggest thing for them is to just take this one step at a time, because if you try to do it all at once, there's going to be emotional collapse. but tonight is going to be very exciting for them. and let's talk about that. the emotion of it all, you know, how does one prepare mentally for this? because we saw at the last olympics where simone biles i mean, everyone was like, i mean, she is the great, right? the goat. but she dealt with some mental health issues. she was dealing with the twisties in diving. you all flip turn upside down in the air. is there something similar that you all deal with and how do you mentally prepare to, like, handle all of the pressure that comes with being an olympian? yeah, i mean, the diving is like
5:52 am
gymnastics in that you have you could potentially have the twisties like like simone did. but i think one of the things we try to prepare our athletes is, is we try to train like we're going to compete and compete, compete like we train and just because it's a different city and a different pool and a different meet, doesn't mean it's different than any other competition. so we try to kind of de hype the olympic pressure and treat it as that. but it's also at times it's going to creep in and be like, oh my goodness, i'm i'm representing team usa in front of billions of people. and so it's that pinch me moment. but if they can take it slow it down and do what they've trained hours and hours and hours for, then i think that they could have some success for diving and representing us. well, talk to me too, about you know, when it comes with the team and diving, you work closely with these athletes. who do you think has the best chance at making it to the podium?
5:53 am
yeah, i mean, i think this specific us diving team for the paris 24 games is, is unique, where we have people who won first time since greg louganis at, carson tyler's doing both events men's ten meter platform and men's three meter, but you have probably four events where we have a practical chance of winning olympic medals. and one of which meant women's three meter and women's three meter synchro, which actually kicks off tomorrow. and that one specifically is the one that the chinese are vulnerable in. so we could potentially see the first olympic gold medal from a woman since laura wilkinson in 2000. wow. and you know, i want to ask you too, about, you know, okay, we've talked about the pressure of becoming an olympian, getting there, being focused in that. what do you do to release all the pressure once it's over? once you've done compete, you know, with the competition, how do you, you know, relax, relate and release? yeah, i mean it's a hard dynamic to be able to turn
5:54 am
it off and turn it on. but i think just going back to why you've started this whole journey in the first place, and i think you'll be, excited during opening ceremonies as a release, olympic toyota sponsorship with elise willoughby and one of those tear jerking moment commercials where this is why i wanted to become an olympian. but i think the hardest thing is, is going back to that moment of why you wanted to go to the olympics in the first place and then not holding on to it. so tight and just enjoy the journey. and so that comes along with once you're done with competing, the results are over and you can't change them. all right. thank you so much for joining us this morning, david boudia, us gold medal olympian. and now team usa diving coach. thank you so much for your time and best of luck to everyone on the team. hey, thank you very much. go team 2:e

now let's take a look at our forecast. it is so exciting! opening day is finally here and we are going to have to watch the athletes out there in the rain. le puy, as we've learned in french. so we are going to see those showers coming through today and hopefully they can pull off all of the stunts for the opening ceremony. we will see the off and on rain in the forecast through tomorrow as well, but as we go into the weekend, much more sunshine coming in and take a look at how that will change those temperatures. it is really going to start to heat up as we go into early next week. highs in the low 90s by tuesday and then wednesday, all of that heat gets broken by some thunderstorms with the cold front moving through. and we will, of course, be tracking all of the changes as we go through the games and the weather. always playing a factor now next hour, jessica aguirre. she will have a live coverage from the city of light
