i said a prayer. >> she is an american living in paris. she could not believe her luck when she won four opening tickets from an olympic lottery. they will witness history. it will be the first olympic ceremony to be held outside and on the water. departing notre dame cathedral, traveling down the river seine. nearly 100 boats sailing through the city's landmarks, passed the alexander third bridge, reaching the spectacular eiffel tower. more than 300,000 spectators will sit on the bleachers. the usa has nearly 600 competitors led by flag bearers, lebron james and coco gauff, the first tennis player and the youngest athlete ever to carry the usa flag. anticipation growing around the opening ceremonies performers. celine dion and lady gaga spotted in paris, rumored to be special guests on a night to remember. celine taking time to take in the louvre. the opening ceremony a challenge. layers of security, including police, soldiers, even security guards. >> as the world pauses to watch

and the u.s. women's gymnastics team posing for photos ahead of the games. first lady jill biden leading the u.s. delegation now in paris, showing her support for the red, white and blue. >> we are all, first and foremost, team usa. [ applause ] >> reporter: and to give you an idea of how intense the security is, 45,000 police officers, 10,000 soldiers and 20,000 private security. a no fly zone 93 miles around paris. organizers want to make sure the opening ceremony goes off without a hitch. it looks like mardi gras in new orleans, but on the water. >> oh, it's got that vibe. >> it's got that vibe. i think they will pull off stunts and performances that will blow people away. >> we have never seen anything like it. it is an exciting time. >> all right. we want to get more on that overnight attack impacting rail service across france. we're also just learning about a bomb threat at a french airport. richard engel is at one of the

largest train stations here in paris. richard, what are you learning about what happened? >> reporter: well, major disruptions are already underway, particularly on rail transport. but not alone. so i'm at the most heavily impacted station so far. and what we're learning is that there were three coordinated attacks on the high-speed rail network, specifically fire set arson against the fiberoptic networks in the north, east and west. another attack on that same network was thwarted, police say, in the south. so it seems that there was a deliberate attempt. and officials here describing this as a deliberate, coordinated, malicious act to cutoff the high-speed rail network in this country. and the station, as you can see, is packed. the mood is fairly calm, people are taking it in stride. most of the people here are french nationals, not tourists, not athletes. this is a busy travel weekend. people are heading out of town. many have already left. all of that security blanket,

and at that airport, a bomb threat was called in in a small regional airport not far from italy and the swiss border. but apparently, after investigating the scene, the people were allowed back in, and transport does seem to have resumed. here it seems that the high speed network won't be up and running until monday. >> richard, thank you. we want to turn back to the final countdown. instead of the traditional march into a stadium, the par rid of nations will take place on the river seine. more than 90 boats set to carry the thousands of athletes. keir simmons is along the banks of the river with more. how is it looking out there? >> reporter: it's looking good. you can see the eiffel tower. that's the bridge that runs

right underneath where you guys are, savannah and hoda. how about this for a view? this is where the opening ceremony will come to a close. you can see along the river there are screens for people to watch as 4,000 artists and entertainers and dancers put on a spectacle. look at that. look at those bleachers. there are others that are coming just to sit on the wall as they prepare. still, folks are arriving. there is plenty of security. this is all closed off right now. it has been swept, guys. but my goodness, it will be a party as team usa come by here. one other note, savannah, the swimming is on in the river. you are going to see olympic competition in the seine there. >> oh, i thought you were

endorsed harris to make her the de facto nominee. harris posting overnight, what happened to any time, any place? her campaign also rolled out its first video, running on freedom, set to the music of beyoncé. also joining tiktok, where young voters live. and going to core democratic voters with an endorsement from the american federation of teachers. >> and we are fighting for the future. >> reporter: the trump campaign is shifting its focus to the vice president. >> she is actually, i think, much worse, in a way, a much worse candidate. >> reporter: the race appears competitive. a new york times poll showing trump with 48% support from likely voters with harris at 47%, within the margin of error. after the trump-biden debate, the same poll showed mr. trump ahead of president biden by six

points. what's coming up? vice president harris has no public events today, while her husband will be in battleground wisconsin this weekend. former president donald trump is speaking at a conservative conference today. and the republican ticket has a joint rally of mr. trump and mr. vance in minnesota tomorrow. hoda? >> all right, kelly o'donnell for us there at the white house. thank you. speaking of former president trump, he's set to meet with benjamin netanyahu today as he wraps audiotape closely watched trip to the u.s. it follows the meetings at the white house with president biden, vice president harris, as well as the families of americans still being held hostage by hamas. andrea mitchell joins us with the latest on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. when the prime minister meets with the former president today, he's expected to hear a very different message. mr. trump wants the war to end quickly but with overwhelming force by the israeli military. all this after the israeli military praised mr. trump for

netanyahu that they understand the urgency and to complete this deal as it currently stands. >> reporter: we spoke with aviva siegel. >> there is a deal to be signed, and he needs to sign the deal. >> reporter: she was taken hostage on october 7th and released after 51 days, leaving behind her husband keith who remains a hostage in gaza. >> i don't understand how keith is there for 293 days, thrown on a mattress because it is so cruel. >> reporter: another day of pro-palestinian protests after hundreds demonstrated at the capitol. painting anti-semitic graffiti, burning an american flag and raising palestinian flags, while the israeli leader was addressing a joint meeting of congress. bipartisan congressional leaders condemn the protesters violent actions on that day, as did vice president harris. the prime minister is expected to come back to washington this

afternoon, delaying his return to israel until tomorrow to observe the jewish sabbath here in d.c. >> thank you very much. also this morning a raging wildfire in northern california has surged to more than 140,000 acres. the so-called park fire. a man pushed a burning car into a gully on wednesday. it is just one of a dozen fires burning along the west coast, signaling what could be an early start to wild fire season. all right. well, that brings us to our first check of the weather. for that, we sent it to al. he's holding it down in new york. but when you land here, it is mr. roker. >> roker, that's right. >> let's show you what's going on. we're looking at wet weather down along the gulf. also, parts of eastern texas into louisiana, they got flood

sanchez. here's a look at our top stories, starting with breaking news out of butte county. that is where a massive wildfire has exploded in size, burning more than 160,000 acres with virtually no containment on any side. it is also not clear how many homes have been destroyed, though we know there are some. it started wednesday afternoon in the outskirts of chico, and authorities do say they now have a man under arrest who they believe started the fire by allegedly pushing a burning car down a ravine. it's not clear yet what charges he will face. i'm bob redell above 580 here on the altamont pass. you see a large burn scar behind me. it's the remnants of a 500 acre wildfire. start around 945 last night, a driver called 911 to report that their car was on fire on the side of 580 near north flynn road. and as you can see, that fire took off from there. the fire is out right now, though. firefighters are still on the scene because it is

windy. there are hot spots and they don't want anything to flare up again. meteorologist kari hall is tracking the condition for those firefighters. yeah, hopefully much improved conditions as we go throughout today as our temperatures will be cooler. but we will have a breezy wind and that's going to keep those temperatures down for the south bay in the mid to upper 80s there and up to 90 in antioch. but then when you compare that to oakland, today will be in the upper 60s and low 60s near the coast in redwood city, some mid 70s and san francisco, upper 60s for today and north bay temperatures also coming down. but we're still up to 96 in ukiah, while santa rosa will see a high of 82 today. chris. all right. thank you. kari. don't forget you can watch today in the bay live streaming at 8:00. we're continuing our interview seriesith san francisco w

gymnastics, a first chance to cheer on our men and women, including, of course, simone biles. >> kaylee hartung has a look ahead at all this stuff. it starts pretty quick, right? >> reporter: yeah, it absolutely does, you guys. yesterday, you could start to feel the excitement building as the women took the floor for their only practice here. after we watched simone biles nail the vault, her coach said, we're all breathing a little bit easier now.now. ♪♪ >> reporter: it's the first step on what they say ♪ >> reporter: it's the first step on what they say is their redemption tour. simone biles, suni lee, jordan chiles, jade carry alongside newcomer hezley rivera, all making their final adjustments as they look to go for gold in paris, something they spoke to hoda about last month. >> you keep saying redemption tour. what are you trying to prove? >> we want that gold.

>> you want that gold? because last year last time it was silver. >> we won silver. we will say that. but there were definitely some things we had to overcome that day during that meet. and i think we all have a little bit more to give. simone will step on to the olympic stage for the third time, three years after a mental block known as the twisties led her to withdraw from most of her events in tokyo. >> do you feel stronger than before? >> i think so. >> witnessing simone's power in person, you can tell she is ready for it. this is her one and only opportunity to rehearse on the olympic floor here in paris. defending all-around champion suni lee is ready to shine after a battle with kidney disease put her gymnastics future in jeopardy last year. >> i was so sick. >> jordan chiles is already flying high after receiving good luck messages from beyoncé and

basketball legend michael jordan. the women are looking to win a fourth team gold for the u.s. in front of a crowd packed with their families and friends, who weren't allowed to attend in tokyo because of covid restrictions. but the top of the podium isn't guaranteed. they will face competition from tokyo all-around silver medalist and the rest of team brazil who will look to get the country's first olympic team medal. on the men's side, the squad is hoping to earn the u.s. its first men's team medal in 16 years. >> i think this is the team to do it. i believe in these guys a lot. >> reporter: before competition begins, though, the women's team is making the most of the olympic village. >> we didn't get this experience last olympics, so we're overly hyped. >> reporter: getting their team usa gear, enjoying team meals

and dancing in between practices. fun moments before they get down to business this weekend. so the action gets started right here tomorrow, guys. the men will take center stage on saturday for their qualifying round, followed by the women on sunday. then it's the men's team final on monday. and the women, they are going to go for gold on tuesday. hoda, savannah, i can only imagine how excited you both are for this. >> we are pumped! we cannot wait. >> thank you, kailey. obviously, you are the official den mother. >> it is unofficial, but it is going to be so much fun. we will have a lot of fun watching them. we have a lot coming up in gymnastics. >> we do. i know you met with the team in paris, so they're feeling good. >> you know someone else who knows how they're feeling is laurie hernandez. she was teammates with some of these great olympians. you have such a unique perspective on how things are

looking for the team. so give us your assessment. >> reporter: it is so exciting watching all the athletes go out there and train. like you mentioned, a lot of them are my friends. seeing them get out there, get a feel for the equipment, i think we will see amazing gymnastics. not just from team usa but from all the countries. it will be an amazing competition. >> four of the five have been there before. that's got to be a big advantage. don't you think? >> reporter: absolutely. and we're also seeing a lot of older athletes. this is the oldest women's gymnastics team that we have seen in quite some time. so the fact that the youngest is hezley rivera, 16 years old from new jersey, feels a little familiar, but a lot of veterans are able to show her the way and make her feel comfortable in a pressure-filled environment like this. it is a big change for women's gymnastics. >> i think simone was trying to make her relax. she was like, you got this, you got this. you wonder who will be the

biggest competition for team usa. who should we keep our eye on, laurie? >> reporter: brazil is working extremely hard to get that gold medal. i'm telling you, it is going to be a fight. team usa looking as strong as ever, and i do think the gold is in the future. but the same events that simone has her strengths on, andrade does as well. her height is definitely up there. you are going to want to keep an eye out. >> we will. we will. they're calling it the redemption tour. i don't think if they need redemption when you are that good, but whatever helps them. laurie, thank you. >> of course, we will be watching all the action here own nbc or streaming it all on peacock. just ahead, the u.s. women's soccer team off to a strong olympics start. a dominating win yesterday. so we will talk to two of its goal scoring stars right after this.

good morning. it is 856. i'm marcus washington. breaking news happening now in butte county. firefighters are giving the first update on that damage from that massive wildfire that started wednesday afternoon on the outskirts of chico. now, this is time lapse video showing the massive fire tornado that roared through one of those areas. look at that. so, so far, at least 134 structures have been destroyed. that fire is also back to zero containment. 164,000 acres have burned. firefighters are still battling that now authorities say that a man is now been arrested. who they believe started this fire by pushing a burning car down a ravine. it's still not clear what charges he may face. we'll
