the conflict from escalating and spreading. a call for restraint that was echoed by secretary of state antony blinken who was in tokyo on sunday who said yes, israel has the right to protect its citizens, but at the same time, the united states does not want to see an escalation of the conflict and the conflict to spread. then the united states ambassador to israel jack liu said on x the strike is a tragic remind they're a diplomatic solution in the north is urgent. he added that all parties must recommit to a diplomatic path that will permit a return to peace and security. hezbollah has denied any involvement in the attack on saturday and diplomatic efforts to prevent the attack from escalating. it really looks like the winds of war are blowing between lebanon and israel with the foreign minister of israel saying we are nearing a moment where we will face an all-out war.

frances? >> crucial moment. claudio, thank you. vigils across the country remembering sonya massey as calls for justice grow. massey was the unarmed black woman shot in her home by a deputy with allegations of misconduct on the job. he has been fired from the force. california officials are working to contain the park wildfire which has grown to more than 360,000 acres since it began on wednesday. cooler weather in the area is expected to help contain it. nearly 4,000 firefighters are involved. among the areas evacuated, the town of paradise devastated by the campfire six years ago. the park fire is currently 12% contained, but it is still expected to grow in size. it's among nearly 90 active fires that are consuming the west coast, causing air quality to plummet and sending smoke visible as far east as new hampshire. let's turn now to meteorologist michelle grossman with the

latest on the fire threat and the rising heat on the plains. good morning, michelle. >> good morning, frances. so good to see you. we're going to see the threat continuing in the intermountain west and the air quality alerts. the smoke all the way to the northern plains in the midwest. that's going to be a big story as we continue throughout the next couple of weeks. this is going to be a big story for some time to come. also talking about those toasty conditions in portions of the central plains. that's building heat as we go throughout the next couple of days. temperatures into the upper 90s, the 100s. you factor in the humidity. it will feel like over 110 in some spots. as we move further to the east, we're looking at storms, rain from the midwest to portions of the southeast. heavy rain throughout the appalachians, could see a sense of rainfall there. and scattered showers throughout new england, also portions of the northeast, we're going to see a series of fronts kind of keeping us unsettled in the east as we go throughout the next couple days. that heat continues to build on wednesday throughout the plains. still dry in portions of the west. we need some rain there so that fire threat does continue.

have our favorite competition. but there are a couple you might not be familiar with. national correspondent steve kornacki breaks down the world of hand ball. >> let's look at an olympic sport that we've all heard of. we might have even seen. but do we really mow the basics? what are the rules? how do you keep score? how do you win? let's look today closer at olympic handball. now in the united states, handball is still very much a niche sport, but it's got elements of some american favorite likes soccer and basketball and hockey. so how is handball played? and how exactly is it scored? so you've got six players who are on the court for each team, plus one goaltender. seven on seven. the objective is simple. throw the ball boo the opponent's goal to score points. one goal, one point. now a handball looks a lot like a soccer ball, but it is a little bit smaller than one. when you get the ball, you can do a couple of things. you can dribble it. you see that right here.

or you can shoot it, you see that right there, or you can pass the ball to one of your teammates. unlike basketball, players can take three steps into between dribbles. played on a court that is a good size, about 130 feet by 65 feet. give you something to compare it to, that is significantly bigger than a basketball court. maybe you can think of two full tennis courts side by side. you see here a diagram of the handball court, a bunch of different lines. each one is very significant. let's go through them here. we'll start with the area in orange you see right here. this is called the goal area. this is reserved for just each team's goalkeeper. but there is one exception, though. because remember, when you're on offense, you can take those three steps with the ball. and one of the things you'll see players do is they'll get a running start and they'll take a jump shot. as long as your feet are planted behind this line, when you take off to the jump shot, you can land in the goal area as long as you release the ball before your

feet land in that goal area. you see that a lot when you're watching handball. moving on here, you see this? this is called the 7 meter line. this comes into play if the defense commits a foul that prevents the offense potentially from scoring. the offense will then choose one player who gets a penalty throw from the 7 meter line. this is sort of like in soccer when you see a penalty kick. we'll highlight the other line here. this is called the 4 meter line. basically, the goalkeeper, when there is a penalty throw, can come out to the 4 meter line, but no further. moving on even further here, you see this dashed line, a second arc. they call this one the 9 meter line. this is going the come into play if a foul is committed between the 6 and the 9 meter line. in this zone right here. if a foul by the defense is committed there, then the offense gets possession along this line roughly wherever the infraction occurred. we say this is a fast-paced game. it can also be a high scoring game. teams are not allowed to sit
