pick a running mate of her own, but multiple sources tell nbc that's expected to happen by august 7th, as the harris team vets possible nominees. pennsylvania governor josh shapiro set to rally for harris later today outside philadelphia. savannah. >> lots to keep your eye on. thanks very much. let's turn now to the wildfire emergency in california. it is only growing this morning. the massive park fire exploding in size, consuming homes and forcing evacuations. its smoke is adding to air quality alerts all across the country. steve patterson is in chico just north of sacramento. >> reporter: hoda, good morning to you. this has started as a brush fire and exploded into the largest active fire. it's growing so big and so fast on so many fronts that the mission right now is just to slow it down.

but it's been tough going for firefighters on the front lines. this morning, crews scrambling to gain the upper hand on a rapidly expanding fire fight. the park fire has already blackened over 360,000 acres, quickly becoming one of the largest in california's history. the size and intensity of the flames generating so-called fire tornadoes, destroying dozens of homes in mountain communities of northern california that are all too familiar with disasters like this. >> there is so much trauma in our community. it wears on our first responders, firefighters, law enforcement. >> reporter: new satellite images showing how a small fire exploded into a sprawling behemoth. burning through thousands of acres an hour across multiple counties. firefighters working around the clock. >> the line, of course, is the highway. they're trying to push the flames back as far as they can away from community centers.

>> reporter: it is just more than 110 active fires burning across the west. wildfire smoke seen as far as new england. with other extreme weather in the south, severe flooding in tennessee even reaching dollywood. a road outside dolly parton's iconic park collapsing and guests wading through water inside. after a local flash flood warning drivers now urged to use caution. authorities say the park will reopen later today. the weather is cooperating. much cooler temperatures have allowed firefighters to make progress. 12% contained. hot, dry weather in the forecast. officials say this could go on for several months. hoda. >> all right, steve patterson near chico, california, steve, thank you. >> also this morning fears of a >> also this morning fears of a wider war in the middle east are escalating. israel hitting targets inside lebanon. blaming hezbollah for a rocket attack that killed at least 12 children. it comes even as a new round of negotiations are held over a

potential cease-fire in gaza. nbc's raf sanchez is following all of it for us. raf, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. these escalating tensions began here in mountain village, it was an ordinary saturday night. a little after 6:00 p.m. kids were playing on a soccer field just over that way when that rocket came crashing down. and you can see behind me there is a large and angry crowd that feels that the israeli government should have done more to protect those children. now that rocket brought death and destruction to this community, but it also set the region on edge. this morning, rising fears of all-out war as israel vows massive retaliation against iranian-backed hezbollah militants after this rocket attack on saturday. 12 children killed playing on a soccer field. israel says it's the worst attack against civilians since october 7th.

hezbollah denying responsibility. but the idf says the group fired from lebanon into the israel-held golan heights. the u.s. condemning the attack but urging restraint. >> we stand by israel's rights to defend its citizens from terrorist attacks. we also don't want to see the conflict escalate. >> reporter: the victims buried in an emotional mass funeral, including 13-year-old john ibrahim. his cousin mourning for him while also caring for her badly wounded younger brother. >> i said, okay, don't be late. i close the phone and, boom, it's happened. >> reporter: everywhere signs of a children's game cut brutally short. the kids' bikes, their four by fours are exactly where they left them. you can see there is a bomb shelter just feet away from the soccer field. but there wasn't enough time to get to it and it is riddled with

shrapnel. a mountain village in mourning today for more young lives lost on all sides of this unforgiving war. now, all of this fighting on israel's northern border is complicating u.s. efforts to try to get to a cease-fire in gaza. the cia director was in rome yesterday for hostage negotiations, and there are more talks expected later this week. at this point, there is no sign of a break-through. >> raf sanchez, thank you very much. president biden today is set to call for an overhaul of the supreme court. the president wants congress to create term limits for the high court. he is set to favor an 18-year term for the justices. he will also make the supreme court accountable for ethics requirements. regarding gifts and financial deals. in addition, president biden will call for a constitutional amendment saying former presidents do not have any immunity from federal criminal indictments or convictions. all right, it is time to

turn to the olympics, an action-packed weekend. craig, what do we got? >> bonjour! here's the thing. it has not taken long for the competition to heat up here in paris. led by some of the biggest names on team usa, including the king himself, lebron james, the stars of swimming and, of course, simone biles showing us all once again just how incredible she is. >> she doesn't even need to land this. she just needs to go for it. >> reporter: this morning, a sigh of relief heard around the world. >> holy cow, are you kidding me? wow! >> reporter: superstar simone biles dominating in her paris olympic debut, shaking off an early injury. the 27-year-old gymnast limping, even crawling after hurting her calf during a warm-up. >> she wouldn't be able to do what she did if it was too serious. >> reporter: the seven-time

olympic medalist on what she calls a redemption tour after a challenging run in tokyo, now again, proving why she's the greatest of all time, powering through the pain to put team usa at the top and qualify for five finals, including thursday's all-around when simone and u.s. teammate suni lee will battle for gold. >> yes! >> reporter: but it's the pool where team usa is already piling up the hardware. >> america does go one-two! >> reporter: torri huske and gretchen walsh taking home gold and silver in the women's 100 meter butterfly. >> i feel like i'm in shock right now. like i don't know how to process. >> reporter: full-time engineer tying for silver on the men's side this the 100 meter breaststroke. and superstar katie ledecky snagging bronze against a familiar foe, australia, who took the gold. but it was this epic finish that had everyone talking.

>> the americans get it done again! >> reporter: caeleb dressel topping with his team in the 4 x 100 meter relay cheered on by his wife megan, their infant son august and none other than snoop dogg. on the pitch, it was the u.s. women's soccer team advancing to the quarters with a dominant 4-1 win over germany. and some of the biggest names in sports taking over the courts. tennis phenome coco gauff cruising in straight sets on the clay. while kevin durant and lebron james led the stars and stripes to an opening game route over serbia. the first win in team usa's quest for their fifth straight gold in men's hoops. so is this stacked roster the new dream team?

stories. milder conditions are helping firefighters on the front lines of the massive park fire, which is now burning in four northern california counties in a new update this morning, crews say that it is still 12% contained, but at least 100 structures are known to be destroyed. 368,000 acres have burned, making this the sixth largest fire in california history. most of the fire now burning in tehama county, though it did start last week in neighboring butte county. meanwhile, the suspect accused of starting the fire is expected in court later today. good morning. i'm thom jensen at the bart station in daly city, where red line service is now restored to all bart riders. the red line, which runs from richmond to sfo and into millbrae, was down along with the green line after a fire saturday, all stations were back open and running again by sunday morning, and this morning bart announced

>> the 400 is a different race. to have that rivalry and that competition for quite some time, you know, i think katie truly excels in the mile. those are her bread and butter events. if you look at top times in history, he owns almost all of them. i don't want to say unbeatable because anything can happen. but she's definitely a strong contender. the odds-on favorite to win. >> nic, you were in tokyo. it was such a different situation. we had the pandemic. fans weren't there. the teammates would come and cheer the others on when they didn't have meets. but what is it like to be here in paris and really have that full olympic experience? >> it was interesting because i don't think the gravity of the situation was lost on anybody in tokyo. all the athletes still felt that it was the olympic games. but just seeing the empty stands of what could have been but then coming here and kind of having that realized is a really fun experience and definitely something i was looking forward to this time around. >> nic, you have a baby on the way. michael, you have a baby right over here. take a peek over here. baby number four. >> yep, yep.
